Lagoon approved for Springfield Springfield is set to have its own little piece of paradise, with the goahead given to construst a lagoon/swimming pool as the centrepiece of stage two of Robelle Domain. The revised design has been approved by Ipswich City Council and secured for the city one of the biggest public lagoon-style swimming pools in Australia. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said a review of the original plans and budget enabled council to include a zero to over a metre depth swimming lagoon equal in size to Southbank’s famous beach pool. “This is a tremendous result for the community and followed feedback from businesses, civic groups and residents very keen for stage two to include a pool. “The updated plan is costed at $10.3 million and includes a contribution of $5 million from the Australian Government. “The new swimming lagoon will be a muchdesired attraction in Robelle Domain, and along with other water bodies cover a total area of 4,700 square metres. This makes it one of Australia’s largest outdoor recreation facilities of its kind. “The lagoon will cater for the local community and families right across the western corridor. “We are committed to a city that is happy, lively and a place where people can’t wait to bring their kids. “This is a decision by all councillors, and

I want to thank them for their strategic vision and their dedication to the Ipswich of tomorrow. This lagoon also takes pressure off the capital and provides an ideal recreational destination for residents of all cities along the western corridor. “Enhanced lighting, landscaping, seating, bbqs and water fountains will also be installed to make this a true recreation destination,” Cr Pisasale said. “This is not about replacing South Bank, this is just about adding more infrastructure to South East Queensland. This is one of the fasted growing areas in the country and this lagoon pool is going to be bigger than Ipswich. You can come by train now, and I encourage everyone to come to Ipswich.” Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee Chairperson and Division 1 Cr David Morrison said this decision will be welcomed by all local residents and families, and installation of Safe City CCTV cameras are planned as a future enhancement. “The 3.74 hectare development that includes the lagoon, new green space and walking tracks brings together Robelle Domain, Orion Town Centre, Springfield Central train station, Education City and the Parklands Business District into a single unified hub.

“Being able to shop at Orion, enjoy a gourmet al fresco lunch and then stroll through beautiful parklands to take the kids for a dip is in the immediate future for local residents. Springfield Land Corporation deputy chairman Bob Sharpless welcomed the approval for the commencing of works. “This is another significant milestone forthe Springfield Central town centre development. The new lagoons will be the highlight of stage two and provide water based play for all ages from tots to teens to adults.

“It will also include amenities such as toilets, showers, change rooms and lockers. “I anticipate the new lagoon and waterways will become an iconic Ipswich destination with the capacity to attract 100,000 visitors a year,” Mr Sharpless said. Want a double movie pass? It’s easy, just send your movie review to Darren@strikepublications. com.au, just like Sharon Black from Ipswich did with her views on the new movie ‘Noah’. ‘Noah’ is the latest epic starring Russell Crowe in a whole-hearted, resolute performance in the title role. After being haunted by visions of an apocalyptic flood that will rid the world of the sins of men, Noah (Crowe) believes the Creator is speaking to him and that it is his plan for all men to be destroyed by this flood, ...and for humanity to die with his youngest son once the world has been recreated. He shares this with wife Naameh (Jennifer Connelly), his hermit grandfather Methuselah (Anthony Hopkins), adopted daughter Ila (Emma Watkins) and sons. They set about building the ark — a boxlike freighter made of sticks, vines and mud — that will house the innocent animals of the world, and themselves, when the great flood comes. Some giant rock-encrusted creatures also assist, and help fight off the uprising led by Tubal-cain (Ray Winstone) attempting to board the ark before the deluge begins. Being more a moviegoer than church-goer, I cannot comment on which aspects of the storyline are biblically correct and where director Darren Aronofsky has taken some creative licence. But I can say is that it is a great movie, based on a Bible story, but does not preach and is suitable for everyone. It is rated M for mature themes. There are images of death and themes (eg the Creator destroying humanity) that may not be suitable for younger children. The visual effects are amazing. It is a work of art and one that I recommend seeing. I reckon Noah is far from being soggy, it’s a winner! Sharon

Lollies aplenty at Sweetmans! Ipswich now has the ultimate destination for those with a sweet tooth, with the ‘Sweetmans Lolly Shop’ is now open for business, bringing a massive range of treats and snacks to Ipswich. Sweetmans Lolly Shop is the brainchild of the Raniga family, which started its confectionary and snack food business in Carole Park over a decade ago, and has now opened in Augustine Heights, just up the road from Orion Springfield. The Raniga family lives in Brookwater, and they loved the place so much they bought land and built their facility in their local area. Under the name of ‘SRS’, they import products from all over the world, and export to New Zealand, the Pacific Islands, and as far as Singapore and the USA. “We are proud to open our business in the local area where we live. “We have a huge variety of snacks and lollies here to satisfy everyone in Ipswich and surrounding areas,” Managing Director Nay Raniga said. The shop also carries a range of ice cream, Veggie chips, flavoured popcorn, and a huge range of kid’s lollies like Zombie Chews and Wicked Fizz. They also

carry a range of Gluten-Free and healthy snacks with natural colouring. Sweetmans Lolly Shop is open Monday to Friday from 10am-5pm, and Saturdays from 10.30am-4pm. The shop is in Technology Drive in Augustine Heights, off Augusta Parkway. From Ipswich, take the exit to ‘Springfield Central’ and turn left at the traffic lights. The Ipswich Jets combined football with support for people with disability last Sunday when the club hosted a Disability Awareness Day in conjunction with the game against the PNG Hunters at North Ipswich Reserve. Club CEO Wayne Wendt said the day followed the wonderful relationship that has developed between the Jets and ALARA. Mr Wendt said the interaction between the players and the kids from ALARA has been a source of joy for all. Michael Howcroft of ALARA said that the relationship with the Jets was about a lot more than the training and playing opportunities with the “big boys” that the kids love. “It’s also the chance for them to be truly part of the club and involved in its operations,” he said. Mr Wendt said the Club encourages others to create opportunities for disabled persons and make a stronger commitment to equal opportunities within rugby league for all. The Jets have adopted this approach, appointing a young disabled man, Tyson Turner-Thomas to work for the Club on game days. Tyson now has the big job of controlling the scoreboard. As part of the Disability Awareness Day the Jets signed a Equality Commitment where the Jets will commit to take positive action to develop and embrace equal opportunities for the game to be enjoyed by all people in Ipswich in an inclusive environment. ListeningPOST With Ian Berry MP MEMBER FOR IPSWICH

I have been in the business of listening throughout my professional life of nearly 40 years.

Call now for more information

My focus in 2014 is to keep listening and delivering for Ipswich. I will write a regular column here to convey ideas and to let you know you what I am doing in Ipswich and when I will be out and about in the community so that I can hear your concerns and opinions. It is also a means for me to inform you of what your State Government is doing. Ipswich’s Biggest Community Survey – I have been overwhelmed by the enormous response to the Biggest Community Survey released earlier this year. A big thank you to everyone who filled out the survey and I especially thank those who took the time to enclose separate letters on issues that are important to them. Because the last of the surveys are still coming in, I have decided to postpone the drawing date for the prizes. It will now be drawn on April 14th. Good luck! This feedback has proved critical in helping me prioritise issue-based community forums and community consultation. The first community forum of 2014 will be held in May. I encourage you to contact my office or come to see me at my mobile offices with more ideas. Safe Night Out Strategy – Ipswich is one of 15 areas state-wide that has been named a ‘Safe Night Out Precinct’ under the 12 month trial by the Newman Government aimed at reducing drug and alcohol fuelled violence. The comprehensive draft Safe Night Out Strategy is open for comment until 21 April. Have your say here: www.getinvolved.qld.gov.au/gi/ consultation/2004/view.html.

Blacksoil Interchange named in memory of “Fountains Corner” The overpass being built as part of the Blacksoil Interchange will be named after a true local icon, following strong community support. Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson and Member for Ipswich West Sean Choat said the overpass would be named after former businessman, the late Tom Fountain. “The location of the overpass, referred to by locals as Fountain’s Corner was the location of Mr Fountain’s longstanding garage and spare parts business,” Mr Emerson said. “Mr Fountain was well liked and regarded by locals as an icon of this community and so it is fitting the overpass will be named the ‘Tom Fountain Overpass’. “It was an easy decision to make given the huge community support led by Sean Choat.” Mr Choat paid tribute to Mr Fountain, who passed away in 1984. “Naming the new overpass after Tom provides a true representation of the community in this area,” Mr Choat said. “Mr Fountain assisted everyone who attended his garage and anyone who required the help of his tow truck along these highways. “I want to thank Mr Fountain’s family for allowing us to honour Tom in this way, along with the many local residents who got behind this initiative. “Work on the intersection upgrade is progressing nicely with construction 60 per cent complete. The upgrade will ease

congestion and increase safety for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians by separating major traffic movements, while still retaining access for local business and residents at this busy intersection.” The Australian Government has committed $54 million to the upgrade from the Regional Infrastructure Fund, with the Queensland Government contributing the remaining $39.4 million to the project. Organic celebrations for everyone! On Saturday 12th April from 10 am Wray Organic Market & Café Ipswich will be celebrating its third birthday, with a huge tasting extravaganza. “Our birthday celebration is a wonderful opportunity to taste some of the amazing organic products that our store has to offer. I am looking forward to being in store on the day doing a cooking demonstration” said owner Deborah Wray. The celebrations have been going since Monday and the party on Saturday 12th April starts from 10am. There will be delicious treats available for tasting, a birthday cake and much, much more. ‘”We will also draw the winner of a $500 spending spree.” Deborah added. Deborah Wray first became interested in organic food when her son was unwell, at the age of sixteen. At the time a Brisbane based doctor suggested to, buy organic

food wherever possible. This was not easy and so Deborah decided one day she would open a convenient one-stop organic shop, as she believed that there must be other people out there looking for clean nutritious food, free of pesticides and preservatives. Hence, ‘Wray Organic’ was born. There are now nine stores with Ipswich being the first regional stores to open. “Wray Organic is a great place to shop and Ipswich customers are wonderful. These birthday celebrations are my way of saying a big thankyou to everyone!” Deborah said. Join the fun at Wray Organic on Saturday April 12 at the Ipswich store located at 70 Warwick Road, just before the Showgrounds.

Easter: Check your facts Noah is a new blockbuster movie of, well, biblical proportions; the top grossing movie in its opening week in Australia. By all accounts it is great entertainment, with amazing special effects are Russell Crowe is brilliant. I heard a movie reviewer on the radio describe it as “a retelling of the Biblical story.” Sadly, nothing could be further from the truth. Yes it has a character called Noah, a flood, the rescue of animals and a huge boat. But the way the story is told has very little in common with the Biblical narrative. Now, I’m not criticising. It’s great entertainment. But what I’m worried about is

whether people realise that it’s inaccuracies. Does anybody check their facts? There is a lot of misinformation about the Bible. Easter is another biblical event about which a lot of people have very little understanding. But the facts of the death and resurrection of Jesus are confronting and lifechanging. Do you know those facts? At Central Church this Easter, we want to open up the Bible and check the facts with you. Why not join us on Good Friday. It might just change your life. Positive education for ‘Their Future’ At The Springfield Anglican College

The 2014 school year has commenced very well for The Springfield Anglican College and, with Term One almost behind us, there has been great activity at the College and much to celebrate. This year the College has embarked on a journey to enhance the level of pastoral care, with a clear view that this will greatly assist students with their academic progress. At the College, a clear focus across both the Primary and Secondary campuses is the provision of a safe, caring, positive and engaging learning environment. While the College has a very good reputation for the delivery of such an environment, as validated by current parents and prospective parents seeking enrolment, this year the College has embarked on a mission to take the level of pastoral care afforded to all students to a new level. Pastoral care programmes underpin and shape the breadth of the learning environment in place at any school. Traditionally, such programmes have a strong focus on assisting students who

experience personal challenges and, while this is extremely important, the College’s newly introduced Positive Education Framework, ‘Learn and Flourish’, seeks to enhance the lives of all our students. The College’s Positive Education Framework embeds the research and work of renowned psychologist, educator and author, Professor Martin Seligman’s positive well-being theory into our daily practice. The College-wide framework incorporates Seligman’s five identified essential wellbeing elements — Positive Emotions, Engagement, Relationships, Meaning and Accomplishment — with appropriate resources and tools to support and build the skills and habits for success. The College’s Positive Education Framework has been developed with both students and staff in mind, as our goal is to build upon the already strong foundation of positivity and

optimism that supports engagement, enjoyment, relationships and social connectedness, all of which enhance academic and professional achievement and personal wellbeing. There is substantial evidence from empirical studies that indicates that the explicit focus, teaching and modeling of skills to increase resilience, positive emotions, engagement and meaning supports the development of emotional intelligence. According to Seligman’s research, this allows people to flourish. Flourishing can be achieved on multiple levels. An individual student may be considered to be flourishing when they are happy, thriving in their social relationships, achieving their goals with competence and confidence and making valued contributions to others. A whole College can be flourishing when most or all members of the community feel a sense of commitment and belonging, and its culture promotes positive emotions, effective learning and social responsibility. The College has in place an extensive database of student academic performance; mapping the progress and achievement of all students during the year and between years. What will be interesting is how the feedback and data gathered, as part of the Positive Education Framework rollout, aligns with student academic progress. It is well accepted the two are closely linked however, to this point, the College has not attempted to develop its own analysis of the relationship. As a starting point, students on the Secondary Campus have identified their five key character strengths, with the rationale being we all have four to five strengths that are more prominent than others. If we can identify, understand and use these strengths it has been shown to enhance an individual’s sense of well-being. In essence, it is about playing to one’s strengths. New research from the field of positive psychology provides the scientific underpinnings for why this matters and the benefits that using one’s strengths brings. As the research suggests, people who use their strengths are happier, are more confident, have higher levels of self-esteem, energy and vitality, experience less stress, are more resilient and are more likely to achieve their goals.

This is an exciting initiative for the College, and it will be interesting to see the benefits unfold. Hello Dolly Wanted: Young filmmakers The hunt is on once again for young filmmakers, as the Ipwich Film Festival for Youth (IFFY) is launched for 2014. This year, the competition has been expanded with a ton of prizes on offer for budding local videographers, with the chance to see their movie on the big screen on the awards night. Mayor Paul Pisasale said council had decided to run the competition again after the success of the inaugural event last April. “Coinciding with National Youth Week, the 2013 event was hugely successful with 24 films submitted to the festival,” he said. “As April 10 last year was National Youth Homelessness Matters Day, the festival is based on the theme Finding Home and entrants are asked to portray what this theme meant to them. Cr Pisasale said Council was looking forward to the support of young people once again for this year’s competition which will culminate with an awards night on October 17. “Council has secured considerable support for the festival with Limelight Cinemas Ipswich agreeing to support IFFY 2014 through free advertising, hosting of the award night/red carpet event in one of their 130 seat cinemas and the sponsoring of two award categories. Cr Ireland said local youth would have until September 24 to lodge their entries. “No entry fee will be payable in 2014, given the considerable sponsorship to the festival by Limelight Cinemas, the University of Southern Queensland and Channel 9,” she said. Cr Ireland said council was thrilled once again to have the support of USQ through the Film and TV Faculty. “Their support in 2013 contributed to the success of IFFY as students from USQ assisted during the red carpet official event by interviewing and capturing the imagines of the evening.”

Want to recreate a Twiggy, Dolly Bird, Dandy, Flower Child or Mod look and get ready to groove the day away in the Square? Here are some easy-peasy makeup tips to help you style up your very own sexy sixties smoulder.

Step 2: Apply a very small dusting of pink or peach blush along the apples of your cheeks. Just a hint! Step 3: Apply a shimmery white or creamy coloured eyeshadow to the entire eye area, from the brows right down to the lash line.

Step 4: Use a medium size brush with a pointed finish to apply a single line in the crease just above your lids. Step 5: This is the tricky part ladies — the liquid eyeliner, and I can’t stress enough how important it is to practise this before you wear it outside the house. Trust me! However, anyone can master this so let’s give it a go. Rest your hand against your face and apply the liquid in a small feathery strokes along the lash line. Easier than trying to draw a perfect line the first time. Simply build up the strokes until you get a thin, even line along your lashes. Step 6: Add a flick. Put a tiny dot on the outside of both eyes and make sure it’s even. That’s where you want to take your flick to while ensuring it stays nice and even. Step 7: Don’t forget the lashes — the thicker and fuller the better. Just apply a small amount of glue to the edge of the false lashes, allow to dry slightly (usually about 20 seconds) and then press gently against your own lashes. Step 8: Apply lashing of mascara top and bottom. Step 9: Define your brows with a soft, natural coloured pencil.

The swinging 60s are back at Ipswich City Square! Saturday 3 May from 11am Ipswich City Mall

Step 10: Finish your look with a dash of pale pink lip gloss.

Power Step 3. Use some bright eye shadows to fill in the petals. Lipstick around the centre of the petals adds brightness while a dark centre line adds a 3 dimensional element. Add some white liquid eye liner to highlight the flower and give it depth and voilà! Instant Mod fabulousness.

For Dandies & Dolly Birds!

Topsy-turvy ways to look at things, teamed with imagination, transform a pile of junk into a resourceful repository of gadgets and circus props. Unpredictable, funny, touchingly human, highly visual and occasionally out of control! Talking Beer WITH PETER COULTAS AT THE YAMANTO TAVERN

Mad Brewers Garden de Paradisi After a day’s brewing occasionally the Malt Shovel Brewers stay long into the night experimenting and concocting never before conceived brews in their relentless pursuit to expand the possibilities of brewing and tantalise your taste buds with unique flavours. As said on the bottle itself is an exciting development through the broader James Squire range, which is normally not overly exciting to beer enthusiasts. This however is a promising and exciting beer to get on tap. Out of the bottle you get a classic Witbier flavour with subtle citrus flavours. As for its percentage coming in with a whopping 6.2%abv it doesn’t feel like you’re drinking something that strong, rather a mellow but distinct alcohol flavour and “easy” drinking beer. Be sure to keep an eye

out for this one as it will only be better out of the cold alehouse taps. Also some things to look out for which will be coming on tap soon are; Hasslehop, Burleigh brewers, Hop Hog, Feral brewing co and a range of single hop special releases from 4 Pines brewing co. Also head over to Harry Browns at Yamanto and get yourself a 4 Hearts Pale Ale, which is finally available in stubbies.

We just keep getting better

Exploding the Mortgage Myth Last time I confronted 10 major mortgage myths. I believe that informed borrowers make better choices, so here’s another 10 myths. 1. You can tell a competitive mortgage by its interest rate. Not always. Set-up and exit costs and ongoing fees can add to the expense of a loan. When comparing mortgages look at the ‘comparison rate’ which takes all fees, costs and introductory rates into account. 2. If your bank won’t give you a mortgage, no lender will. Often a mortgage broker can match you with the right lender. 3. The best home loan rates are online. Online lenders can have very competitive rates. But many borrowers need personalised service, so an online lender might not be the best option. 4. Lines of credit are too expensive. Some Line of Credit facilities can attract a slightly higher rate because they offer flexibility for personal credit. However a word of caution, lines of credit are not suited to all borrowers, especially those who have difficulty budgeting or who lack financial experience. 5. Special introductory interest rates are the best deal. Lenders often use discounted, introductory or honeymoon offers to attract customers. But once the special rate is over, the loan often reverts to a much higher interest rate.

6. Always look at a lender’s comparison rate. It tells you the long term cost. 7. It’s not wise to borrow outside the big four banks. During the GFC, the Government guarantee of bank deposits prompted this myth. But the guarantee extends to deposits, not loans. Some of the best deals are from smaller lenders, and now that the Government has banned exit fees consumers have the power to refinance to a better deal. 8. You can save on your loan by correctly timing a fixed rate loan. If we could all predict the way interest rates move, economists would be out of a job. Variable rate loans generally perform better over time, while fixed rate loans provide certainty for borrowers over shorter periods. It’s best to look at all your options. 9. Lenders mortgage insurance covers my repayments if I get sick. Lenders Mortgage Insurance covers you for nothing - it insures the lender in the event you default on your loan and the property is sold at a loss. 10. Credit defaults or bankruptcy disqualifies me for a home loan. There are home loan options available for people with adverse credit histories. It’s best to be upfront with your broker and see what’s available. For more information call Mike at YBR Ipswich on 0434 968 862. Mark Bouris Executive Chairman Yellow Brick Road

EDIT SKYLINE WEALTH

BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé BMW Group Australia has announced the impending arrival of a new addition to its acclaimed BMW 4 Series range – the all new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé. This new model follows the recent introduction of the Coupé and Convertible BMW 4 Series models. According to Phil Horton, managing director of BMW Group Australia, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé brings the 4 Series styling and dynamics to a wider audience. “The Gran Coupé variant adds more functionality to the BMW 4 Series without compromising any of the aesthetics or driving enjoyment of the vehicle, and in line with BMW’s strategic product direction, the additional functionality will not come at a premium. The 4 Series Gran Coupé will be similarly equipped and identically priced to the equivalent two-door Coupé models,” said Horton. The major difference between the Coupe and the Gran Coupe lies in the roofline, which sits 12 mm higher and extends a further 112 mm towards the rear of the car. The two frameless rear doors of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé offer greater access to the 2+1 rear bench seat and the increased height and length of the roof allows for greater rear passenger headroom and improved comfort.

Added to this is the 35 litre increase in the luggage compartment, now boasting 480 litres of room – up to 1,300 litres with the standard 40:20:40 split fold rear seats folded down – which provides more convenience for everyday commuting. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé line-up is identical to the two-door Coupé models which are all powered by the latest BMW TwinPower turbo engines boasting exhilarating power and torque figures, yet still returning impressive fuel economy. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé shares a high level of standard specification nearly identical to that of the equivalent BMW 4 Series Coupé models. The exceptions include the addition of automatic tailgate operation and 40:20:40 split fold rear seats which are fitted as standard on every BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé model. The BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé will also include an inbuilt SIM card on every model to enable the full suite of BMW Connected Drive features for the first time in Australia. The new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé model will be available in Australian showrooms from June 2014.

World premiere for new Sonata Hyundai has unveiled the ‘all-new Sonata’, a sophisticated evolution of the brand’s longestablished mid-size sedan. The all-new Sonata’s design concept focuses on ‘Inner Force’, a theme that points to its evolved aesthetic and confident design. The all-new Sonata project began with the aim of developing a world-class premium midsize sedan through innovation in fundamental areas, while maintaining the model’s proud heritage. The car’s newly designed underpinnings contribute to an improvement in suspension performance and a greater structural rigidity over the previous generation model, resulting in 41% greater torsional strength and 35% greater bending strength than the outgoing model. The new model is 35 millimetres longer and 30 millimetres wider than the previous generation Sonata, delivering a marginal increase in exterior size but worthwhile gains in internal volume. Advanced suspension design and active safety features such as Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure Warning System and Advanced Smart Cruise Control, ensure a safe

New Toyota Kluger launched driving experience. Convenience features are fitted to the all-new Sonata, providing it with the type of luxury, safety and technology equipment typically associated with cars from the segment above. A variety of premium features such as rear parking sensors, heated leather seats and rear-side curtain airbags emphasize Hyundai Motor’s commitment to delivering value beyond expectations. Advanced multimedia systems and nextgeneration infotainment equipment are also fitted to the all-new Sonata. Hyundai Motor’s previous generation Sonata was launched in 2009, embracing the brand’s Fluidic Sculpture design philosophy. The striking design and stylish appearance of the previous generation Sonata enhanced Hyundai Motor’s image. The new Sonata specifications and pricing for the Australian market will be announced closer to the vehicle’s local launch in the second half of 2014.

Volvo trial cloud-based communication It’s an idea that will take road alerts to a whole new level. In a fascinating new trial, Volvo Cars, the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) and the Norwegian Public Roads Administration (Statens Vegvesen) are joining forces in a pilot project in which road friction information from individual cars is shared within a cloud-based system. The real-time data about slippery patches on the road are used to warn vehicles nearby, at the same time as it contributes to making winter road maintenance more efficient. “The pilot is one of the first practical examples of the way communication between vehicles over the mobile network enables vehicles to ‘speak’ to each other and with the traffic environment. This can contribute to making traffic safer,” says Erik Israelsson, Project Leader at Volvo Cars. “We have 50 test cars on the roads, and next winter the fleet will grow considerably. Our aim is to make the technology available for our customers within a few years,” he adds. When the Volvo test car detects an icy or slippery road patch, the information is transmitted to Volvo Cars’ database via the mobile phone network. An instant warning is transmitted to other vehicles that are approaching the slippery area, making it possible for the drivers to take immediate action to avoid a critical situation.

Motoring News

A slippery road warning on the instrument cluster alerts the driver. The application in the vehicle will be designed to adapt the driver warning to match the severity level based on the vehicle speed and the present road conditions. The information about the icy patch is also sent to the road administrator as a complement to existing measurement stations along the road. The data can help the road administrator and their contracted entrepreneurs to better plan and execute winter road maintenance and quickly address changed conditions. “When the road administrator has access to information from a large number of cars, the data can be used to make winter road maintenance more efficient. The information could help to improve road safety further for all road users. This could also reduce the use of salt when not needed and minimise the environmental impact,” said Erik Israelsson.

Toyota has launched a new seven-seat Kluger sports-utility vehicle (SUV) that brings together the best in style, technology, comfort, capability and safety at value pricing. The third-generation Kluger is designed to meet the needs of families and business buyers with an expanded array of standard features, a host of in-cabin technologies and increased cargo capacity. Engineers have liberated more interior space by developing a longer and wider body, adopting a new space-efficient double-wishbone rear suspension, and moving all three rows of seats forward. As a result, the third row is easier to access, the two-seat bench is wider and offers more comfort, while the luggage area behind is larger, expanding capacity by one-third. Kluger’s driving experience is more dynamic, with new technologies and optimised steering and suspension. AWD models include standard Dynamic Torque Control for maximum traction and cornering ability and Downhill Assist Control that automatically controls the brakes to maintain a constant low speed when descending slopes, reducing wheel lock. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said development of the new Kluger focused on visual appeal, developing an better package for families, and providing greater driver enjoyment. “The styling is aggressive, enhancing Kluger’s emotional appeal to attract new customers in addition to impressing our strong band of loyal owners,” Mr Cramb said. Kluger’s exterior design is sleek and strong, displaying a more aggressive face, subtle sculpting of the sides, prominent wheel arches and a newly designed tailgate. A totally redesigned interior raises the bar on overall quality with premium materials, soft-touch surfaces, bright accents and greater refinement and functionality. Smart storage solutions include an underdash tray shaped to prevent items sliding out and a 24.5-litre roll-top centre console that doubles as an armrest and is big enough to store a large handbag. Kluger is available in three well-equipped grades — GX, GXL and Grande. Each is available in two-wheel (2WD) or all-wheeldrive (AWD) and provides even better value than before with prices starting at $40,990* — $2,200 less than the previous-model equivalent. AWD is an optional $4,000 extra across the range, down $500. All Kluger grades feature a 3.5-litre V6 engine and new six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with selectable manual sequential shifting and artificial intelligence that adapts to driving styles and

provides engine braking on downhill runs and minimises gear hunting. Fuel economy has been improved while maintaining power output at more than 200kW. Every Kluger has a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, seven airbags, cruise control, air-conditioning, front fog lamps, six-speaker display audio with Toyota Link multimedia and a multi-information display. It picks up 19-inch wheels, projector LED headlamps with Auto High Beam, tilt-andslide moonroof, ventilated front seats, eightinch display audio with navigation and DAB+ digital radio, second-row sunshades, nine-inch rear-seat entertainment system with Blu-ray player, power-operated tailgate, woodgrainlook pattern highlights and a full-colour 4.2inch multi-information display.
