CELEBRATING 30 YEARS

WHAT’S GOING ON

CITY VIBE

‘500’ Miles will screen at 4pm, September 21 at Limelight Cinemas Ipswich. Tickets at www.limelightcinemas.com.au

Local movie ‘500 Miles’ to screen in Ipswich Ipswich is becoming a great place to make movies. The ABC’s ‘Parer’s War’ was filmed in the city streets, plus who could forget Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s visit to the Lockyer Valley. Now, the movie ‘500 Milies’, filmed over several days in and around Rosewood last year, is set for screening in Ipswich. ‘500 Miles’ is a story of troubled youth. Emily (played by upcoming actress Ebony Nave) is the girl that the world seemingly forgot. Lost on the other side of the tracks, it isn’t until she becomes stranded in the middle of nowhere that she finally begins to discover a path to her own redemption. The movie is set to have a charity screening this month at Limelight Cinemas Ipswich on September 21. Terrance Young, the film’s producer/writer said there were challenges in making movies locally. “I’ve been making independent films since I was a kid, I started writing this one about ten years ago and it was something I kept coming back to,” Terrance said. “Ten years ago I was 20, and now I’m 30 so it was a different script when it began. It was simply an idea of a girl, (which I’ve never done before with a female lead), growing up in the Australian country. The script began quite immature, but it grew with me over time. The idea was clear, but the structure changed over that decade. “In my own words, it’s the story of a young woman who runs away from her drug induced lifestyle, her car breaks down and unknown to her she discovers her own redemption from somebody she meets.” The movie, filmed in 2013, includes many scenes filmed in Rosewood. Community support for the project was paramount.

“At the end of 2012 I met with Ashlee Jensen, the director, and we were at a point in our lives when we’d built up a team and we knew what we were doing, so we decided to go for it. “There isn’t much government support for filmmaking in this country sadly. We started casting, got the script up to scratch and began a ‘Crowd Funding’ campaign. That’s where people can put in five or ten or more dollars and they get things in return like a name in the credits, or a copy of the DVD when it comes out. “We raised about $50,000 that way including some private investors and made the movie, including several scenes in Rosewood, from June to August of last year.” The charity screening on September 21 will donate a portion of ticket sales to charity, something that is relevant to the film’s subject matter. “Some of the profits from the screening will go to the Young Life charity, and we wanted to tie it in with a character who has lost her way,” Terrance said. “This charity was suggested to me by Cr David Pahlke and it’s a good fit!” So what is it like to sit

in a cinema and see something you’ve worked on for years up on the big screen? “I just love adventure stories, and I simply want to be a story teller. That creation process is great, to make something and have it on the big screen is why you do it. “I get very nervous watching my movies with an audience. I can’t put myself into their minds, into what they are thinking. I wonder if they are picking up on things I think were a problem, or vital to the plot…its gut wrenching. I may have seen the film a million times! Maybe I’m just a perfectionist? It’s a really bizarre feeling,” Terrance said. ‘500’ Miles is screening 4pm, September 21 at Limelight Cinemas. It’s My Life It’s a good day at the office when three lovely ladies drop in and ask you for a coffee and a chat. No, it wasn’t a dream I had, but was the case recently when Dozzi dropped in to say g’day and talk about their new album. With the big CMC Country Festival coming to Ipswich next year, let’s hope that these three charming girls from the Western suburbs of BrisVegas get to show their talent on stage in 2015. Also in this issue we spoke with a true local hero from Rosies, get a look at the new uniforms that are being issued over the coming months at RAAF Amberley (its a big job issuing 6000 uniforms), plus I got a chance to have a look at a sight that most people in Ipswich don’t even know exists. See the story on page 18 where you won’t believe the size of the hole left behind by an old coal mine. It’s truly amazing. Also in this issue we have TWO sets of giveaways, including one just for the kids as the school holidays are fast approaching. Don’t you love September? Spring is here, Footy Finals are on and the kids are almost on holidays. Life’s good in Ipswich.... darren@strikepublications.com.au

Dozzi: Sisters on a mission STAR CHAT CELEBRITY NEWS

Growing up in a house constantly filled with music has led to a career that could take three sisters from the Western suburbs to the top of the music charts.

Dozzi sisters Jesse, Andrea and Nina, the ‘Dozzis’ have a new CD ‘This Time” out now, and their new single is out this week titled ‘Weakness”. For more visit dozzimusic.net

Jesse, Nina and Andrea Dozzi have embarked on a musical journey, taking them to the US along with playing in clubs and festivals, including the ‘Holy Grail’ for country music fans, The Gympie Music Muster. The trio describe their music as Country Pop/Rock, and they dropped into Ipswich Life recently as they celebrate the release of their new CD titled ‘This Time’. ‘Dozzi’ have just returned from Nashville, where they’ve been recording, right in the heartland of Country music. “We’ve just got back from Nashville where we were recording. We’ve signed a production deal with Billy Ray Cyrus’s people, (‘we call him Billy ‘cos he’s our friend’ Jesse added with a laugh), and it was great to just be there. It’s so inspiring. Our first trip there, we were there for a month and we were writing two songs a day because it just inspires you to work harder and get better,” Jesse said. ‘Country’ may bring to mind Kenny Rogers or Slim Dusty, but times have changed. “Our parents were musicians, they were in a cover band called ‘Small Torque’, so we grew up with music around us the whole time,” Andrea said. “We call ourselves ‘Country/ Pop’, but everyone is doing different styles of country music now, there are so many styles of the one genre. At the end of the day we just like to have fun. “We’ve been asked to do X-Factor and Australia’s Got Talent but we’ve worked hard to get where we are, so we choose not to do those shows. We want to do it ourselves, and do it our way. “A lot of those shows you’re told what to sing, but we are writers and musicians first and foremost, so we know what we like.” Nina, being the youngest of the group remembers what it was like being left out, but luckily for her, she’s emerged from ‘Baby Sister’ to a fully-fledged member of the band. “My big sisters used to sing with our cousins, and I remember their first gig. I was standing at the window crying because I couldn’t join

them, I was about 7 or 8 at the time,” Nina said. “But once I finished high school they saw me sing at my graduation so we decided to write and work together as a trio from then on.” Sibling rivalry often comes to the fore when working together, but for the Dozzi girls, it never gets in the way of the music. “Funnily enough we don’t fight, which is what people would expect. We tend to at time, but we argue more about who is driving to the gig, or ‘where’s my earrings you borrowed?’ “Writing with three minds is good, because if one of us gets stuck on say a chorus, Jesse’s really good with those or another person is good with song titles… it all adds up to a good result.” Jesse remembers her father writing songs, and never imagined that it would lead to a full time career in music. “Our Dad used to write country music. We grew up listening to the songs they learned for their band or the songs they wrote… never listening to the songs they actually liked. “We started out doing some backing vocals on a country song, and then the three of us started writing together,” Jesse said. “Once we had written a bunch of songs we decided we wanted to play them and after rehearsing a lot we finally started performing. “We played Gympie Music Muster last year and it was awesome. Its not just an great festival, but also a great chance to catch up with other artists. We are really hoping to play the CMC Music Festival next year in Ipswich. Fingers crossed we can say “Dozzi, Main Stage, 8pm”!”

Rosies’ Michael Byrnes cares for Ipswich’s homeless For homeless people, Rosies is the one place they can turn to in Ipswich. Co-ordinator of Rosies in Ipswich, Michael Byrnes is well known in the community for his work with the charity and will again be applying for a ‘Caring for the Community’ grant that he can put to good use.

Operating at the top of the Ipswich Mall every Friday night, homeless and people in need know that can rely on Michael Byrnes and his team of volunteers to give them a hot drink and something to eat. To some people, it is often their first real meal of the day. Relying totally on community donations. Rosies is one of many community groups that is eligible to apply for the latest round of grants up for grabs. 014_IpsLife_quarterpage_tickets:Layout 1 1/09/2014 9:20 AM Page 1 million waiting to be allocated, There is $1.3 and State MP Ian Berry will be encouraging Rosies to again apply for some cash, plus hopefully other community groups who need a helping hand. “I advertise in IpswichLife “The Caring for our Community program because we get results, and recognises how important local organisations we like to support a 100% are to our communities and our state,” Mr local paper!” Berry said. Small grants of up to $5,000 are available Gary Edwards for the purchase of essential items and Tom’s Clearance Centre equipment. A small number of grants up to $15,000 may be available depending on the needs of particular communities. “That’s why it is vital for us to continue to revitalise frontline services and support those who help to build more vibrant and inclusive communities. “I would encourage people to come out and apply, because there is no limit to how many Ph: 3282 9019 grants can be given to each electorate, so the info@strikepublications.com.au more Ipswich people who apply, the more

money can be given out to the community,” Mr Berry added. “I’m encourging all community groups to apply, and if they need any help just call my office and we can give some directions.” “I got $600 from the grants last year which was fantastic, and enabled us to purchase five swags for homeless people,” Michael said. “We used the rest to buy materials, as we rely 100% on donations from the community to do what we do. “We are in the mall Friday nights, and Queens Park on Wednesday and Thursday nights. People come for a coffee, have something to eat and a chat. “We have homeless people, others who sleep under bridges, some sleep in boarding houses and often some of those people spend all their money on accommodation which doesn’t leave much for food. “Many of them come here on a Friday night just for some company. It’s an enjoyable time for them… just to feel part of a community and being a family. Many of

these people are ostracised, and marginalized,” Michael said. “We understand that community groups are at the heart of what makes Queensland great,” Mr Berry said. “Grants are available to cover a wide range of items from printers, computers, fridges or microwaves to shade sails, lawn mowers, UHF radios and sporting equipment.” Applications for grants close on Friday 26 September 2014. Ipswich on show to Queensland business A recent forum held in Ipswich by the Department of State Development highlighted to investors and business leaders the opportunities that await them in the nation’s fastest growing area. The Ipswich, Lockyer, Scenic Rim and Somerset areas make up one of the fastest growing regions in Queensland, with Ipswich alone projected to grow by 4.6 per cent by 2036. Local mayors and local business leaders gave presentations inviting business into the region. Infrastructure and Planning Director-General David Edwards said the forum aimed to assist local businesses to gain the maximum possible benefit from major projects. “The forum was a chance for local businesses to hear about real opportunities for securing work contracts, meet major project proponents, and learn more about how to successfully bid for work,” Mr Edwards said. “Some of the most positive feedback I have heard so far, and a great example of how our State Assessment and Referral Agency (SARA) is working well, came from the Goodman Group — the developers of the $350 million Redbank Motorway Estate. “This significant estate has attracted three major transport and logistics companies responsible for nearly 100 000 square metres of occupancy.” Regional Director Michael Whiting said, “We had Ripley Valley and Springfield

people showcase their developments, along with representatives from RAAF Base Amberley about their expansion plans. There was also discussion on opportunities connected with the Commonwealth Games in 2018 on the Gold Coast. “It’s a mix of attendees, we’ve got a whole range of representatives from medium to large businesses, from town planners to people in the property industry. It’s a showcase for the four shires in terms of investment.” Photo L-R: Savas Varitimos from Savas Varitimos Valuers, Scott Richards from Clearspan Toowoomba, Jo Pokock from Ipswich City Council Planning, and Michael Whiting from Dept of State Development, Infrastructure and Planning.

Choat’sChat With Sean Choat MP MEMBER FOR IPSWICH WEST

September is Small Business Month and it’s a great time for us all to think about how we can create a better community by doing business locally. So please celebrate and support your local business, which creates jobs and builds a strong local economy.

Schools maintenance backlog slashed Since my last column, there’s been a lot happening in Ipswich West. Our local school children will have the best possible learning environment thanks to the third round of the Newman Government’s $300 million commitment to Queensland state schools. This further investment will completely clear the maintenance backlog left by the previous Labor Government and I am pleased that state schools in Ipswich will benefit from our program. The latest round of funding, which is $100 million of a total commitment of $300 million will allow schools to undertake works such as repairing cracked footpaths, repainting classrooms and new carpet.

Public transport or more services? The Newman Government is offering Queenslanders the choice between lower fares or more services and you have an opportunity to decide how $30 million in carbon tax savings are spent. The Queensland Government has already delivered an extra 3000 train and bus services, but now we’re doing more and asking whether they want the carbon tax savings invested in reduced fares or even more transport services. I promised you better infrastructure and revitalised frontline services as part of my strong local plan for a brighter future and that’s what I am delivering. But I want you to have your say; do you want cheaper transport or more transport options? We’re offering you the choice of which is preferred. An online survey closes at midnight Sunday, 14 September via the TransLink website http://translink.com.au or by calling 13 12 30.

Andrew Dodt clinches Qld Open Golf Firing four birdies in the final six holes at the demanding Brookwater Golf Club layout, Queensland’s Andrew Dodt has won the ISUZI Qld Open by two shots from Tom Bond. While South Australian Tom Bond lead the field for most of the final day, with Dodt starting six shots behind, the boy from Gatton put on a blistering finish when the pressure was on to win with a final round 67, which was a 7-under par score 281 over the four rounds. Dodt attributed his success to “sticking to his game plan” and having local knowledge, having practised at the Brookwater club as an amateur, as a member of the Queensland Academy of Sport squad. “I knew I was playing well and I know the course well. I had a good game plan and I stuck to that all week,” said Dodt. This is Dodt’s second win as a professional. “To win your State Open means a lot,” he said. Dodt plans to contest the European PGA Tour qualifying school in November the returning

to tackle the Australasian Tour summer events. Overnight leader, Tom Bond, was understandably disappointed, having played so well over the four days of competition. His play tee to green was exemplary during the final round but he couldn’t sink the putts that counted. He narrowly missing an Eagle putt on the penultimate 17th Hole, which would have tied Dodt going up the final hole, but having to make Birdie proved too much of an ask, as he pushed his birdie putt past the hole and missed the par putt back. Gold Coast amateur, Kade McBride, was the leading amateur tied 8th with Brett Drewitt (NSW ) on 2-under 286. Tied third on 3-under 285 were Matthew Griffin (VIC), Cameron Smith (QLD), Anthony Brown (VIC), Jake Higginbottom (NSW) and Michael Long (NZ). Staging the event at Brookwater has proved a success, with record crowds for the second year in a row. Prize money this year totalled $110,000.

Main: Qld Open winner, Andrew Dodt with Golf Queensland CEO, Peter Castrisos and ISUZI Australia CEO, Mike Yoda. Left: Crowds and action at the Qld Open at Brookwater Golf Club.

The day will be excitement plus, or families can just wander through the market stalls or chill out in the relaxed atmosphere with live easy listening music. Higher Education reforms Last week in Parliament saw the introduction of the Higher Education and Research Reform Amendment Bill, a bill that, should it be passed, will be the Americanisation of our higher education system. It’s a plan for $100,000 university degrees that will force talented students to consider the affordability of a university education against the burden of debt and the restriction that this debt might place on starting a family or purchasing a home. The people most affected by this bill will be students from low income backgrounds, students who graduate into relatively lowpaying jobs, graduates who take time out of the workforce to raise a family, mature aged students seeking to upgrade their qualifications, and people in remote and regional Australia. What this bill will do is cut funding for university courses by an average of 20 per cent, leaving universities with no alternative but to raise fees to cover costs. It deregulates university fees, which will cause the cost of many degrees to skyrocket. It sets a real interest rate on HECS-HELP student loans, burdening students with years of crippling debt and reduces the income threshold that student debt must start to be repaid. Stephen Parker, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Canberra recently asked the question ‘is this Bill essential for the future prosperity of our nation as the Minister for Education had claimed? …one wonders why it wasn’t mentioned in the federal election campaign last September’. The answer, of course, is that the Coalition knew that Australians wouldn’t have voted for a policy that would make it more expensive for their kids to go to university. This Bill fails the fairness test and is yet another of Tony Abbott’s broken promises Kind regards Shayne Neumann, MP

I like Pie!

My 10 year old daughter’s favourite answer to anything at the moment is “I Like Pie.” She also happens to really like baking and so this weekend, after already making Gingerbread biscuits - I was not allowed to help - we decided to bake Lemon Meringue Pie.

Mick from New Zealand (that’s what he said!) and Grant Sadler give the thumbs up

Ingredients Pie Crust • 1 1/2 cups Plain Flour • 2 tbs Icing Sugar • 125g Butter, chilled and coarsely chopped • 2 1/2 tbs Iced Water Meringue • 1 Cup Caster Sugar • 4 Egg Whites

Lemon Curd • 1/3 cup Cornflour • 1/2 cup Water • 2/3 cup Fresh Lemon Juice • Zest of 2 Large Lemons • 1 cup Caster Sugar • 4 Egg Yolks • 60g Butter, chopped

Sift the flour and icing sugar into a bowl. Rub the butter into the flour mixture until it looks like fine breadcrumbs. Add water and stir until a dough forms. With your hands, bring the dough together in the bowl. Roll it out onto non-stick baking paper, until it’s about a 5 mm-thick circular shape. Line a 25 cm base pie dish. Trim off any excess pastry. Cover the pastry with baking paper and rest in your refrigerator for 30 minutes.
After its rested, preheat your oven to 180C. Fill the lined dish with pastry weights or rice and bake in your oven for 15 minutes. Remove the paper and pastry weights or rice and return to the oven to bake for a further 15–20 minutes, or until crisp and golden. Put aside. To make lemon curd, combine the cornflour, water, lemon juice, lemon zest and the sugar in a saucepan. Use a whisk or fork to stir over a medium heat for 4 minutes or until the mixture boils and thickens. Stir over the heat for another minute. Remove and whisk in the butter and egg yolks. Transfer to a container, cover and place in refrigerator for 3 hours. At the three hour mark, preheat your oven to 190C. With your electric beater, beat the egg whites in a clean, dry bowl until soft peaks form. Begin to add the sugar, 1 tablespoonful at a time. When you mixture is thick and glossy, you’re ready to assemble the pie. Spread the lemon curd over the base of the pie crust. Spoon on the meringue mixture and spread evenly, creating peaks. Bake in oven for 5 minutes or place under a really hot grill until peaks are golden. Allow to cool completely and then you’re welcome to like pie too!

Kelli Smith wins $5000 Solahart system Long-time Dinmore resident, Kelli Smith, is “over the moon” about winning the IpswichLife/Solahart competition: her choice of a $5000 solar hot water or a solar electricity system.

“This is so awesome, good things like this just don’t happen to us,” exclaimed Kelli. “I’m so excited that I won this wonderfull prize, which is going to make such a difference to our household bills.” Kelli’s entry was one of more than 400 received over the period of the competition, with contestants having to fill in a form published in IpswichLife wichLife:Layout 1 28/08/2014 8:02and AM posting Page 1 it in. Kelli is a deserving winner. With husband Gavin, they have supported the Ipswich community through running barbecues at Bunnings, for the Lions Club, along with other community activities over many years. “This has come at the perfect time, with Gav and I celebrating our 26th wedding anniversary soon, and it’s my birthday on 17 September,” Kelli said. Kelli has been a paraplegic for the past 15 years, following an accident, which has brought the couple even closer. “Gavin wanted solar on the roof, and I told him that if there were anything I could give him it would be winning this competition — and I did it!” Nathan Van Dyk from Solahart Ipswich said that Kelli was such a deserving winner,

and that Solahart would now make arrangements for installation of the system at Kelli and Gavin’s place at Dinmore. Below: Nathan Van Dyk from Solahart Ipswich with competition winner Kelli Smith and Russell Geraghty, Dealer Development Manager Solahart.

Finally, the truth about BACK PAIN Do you have any of the following conditions? • Lower back pain or stiffness • Muscle spasm or strains • Bulging lumbar discs • Numbness or soreness in your legs • Shooting hip or thigh pain • Sciatica Having back and leg pain can bring life to a standstill. You might not be able to play golf, work, or even sit in the car for a 30-minute drive. It’s almost impossible for anyone around you to understand how you feel. You can’t remember the last time you even had a restful night’s sleep.

Is back pain keeping you from enjoying what you love to do? You’ve got too many dreams left undone to let back pain slow you down. Too many special moments waiting to be experienced with the kids or the grandkids.

Life is too short to let pain slow you down. Pain is your body’s warning sign telling you something is wrong. Sure, you can numb the pain if you take enough anti-inflammatories, narcotics or other pain pill. But if you mask the pain, it can prevent your back from healing – maybe even damage it further. Many of the pain medications available are quite addictive and can have devastating side effects like heart attacks, gastric haemorrhage or kidney failure.

Could this be the solution to your back pain?

“Over the coming decades the Ripley Valley region will grow significantly, with a number of construction and commercial related activities providing opportunities for students to develop their skills and further their education. Sekisui House is committed to working with the community, and teaming up with Queensland’s largest, most experienced training provider, TAFE, is a great opportunity.” Toru Abe Sekisui House CEO

The MOU provides a framework for Sekisui House and TAFE QLD to develop programs and initiatives for students to learn new skills during the construction of the new community. Toru Abe, Sekisui House Australia CEO and Managing Director said the MOU would facilitate the development of training and education opportunities, allowing TAFE students to receive hands-on experience. “Discussions are underway with TAFE to look at the best way to engage with students studying land care, construction, retail, hospitality and health and wellness courses. “By providing education and training opportunities within the Ripley Valley will encourage locals to remain in the area and position the region as a prime location to establish new local businesses. “Our long-term goal is to facilitate the development of a locally skilled labour force, which will have great economic benefits for the region. We will also look at establishing vocational education and training opportunities within the Ripley Valley Town

Centre once constructed.” Trevor Schwenke, General Manager, TAFE Queensland South West said opportunities covering a range of courses would be discussed with Sekisui House. “With Sekisui House providing access to such a large project, it really opens the door for a number of initiatives to be developed,” Mr Schwenke said. “Construction, environmental and land care skills will be a big focus in the beginning, but as the development progresses we can then look to include opportunities for students studying retail, hospitality and health and wellness courses. “We are committed to providing opportunities for our students to undertake live work training while studying as well as creating the possibility of pathways to employment on completion of their TAFE course. “We anticipate that the first round initiatives will be rolled out in due course.”

Ipswich water network upgrades continue Queensland Urban Utilities has completed a $1.3 million dollar upgrade of the water network under the Ipswich CBD. More than 700 m of water mains have been replaced, including 595 m under Brisbane St between Burnett and Ellenborough Streets and 110 m along Limestone St. Queensland Urban Utilities spokesperson, Michelle Cull, said the project will improve the integrity of the local network. “These water mains are like the arteries pumping the heart of Ipswich,” she said. “This investment will ensure the region continues to receive a reliable and efficient water supply now and into the future. “Queensland Urban Utilities would like to thank Ipswich residents and businesses for their patience during construction works over the past year.” Queensland Urban Utilities will invest nearly $40 million in the Ipswich community this financial year, as part of its capital expenditure program. “This includes work which commenced last week, to replace 430 m of water mains in Bergholz Lane and Alice St, Gailes. “Plus by the end of the month construction will be underway to lay 450 m of new pipes along the length of Cafferky St, One Mile.

“We are laying the foundations to support population forecasts in one of Australia’s fastest growing cities,” Ms Cull said. “It’s important that we continue to plan and build for the future to ensure we have a sustainable water and sewerage network for many years to come.” Above: Queensland Urban Utilities’ Will Sadler & Michelle Cull with an example of the new pipe laid beneath Brisbane St

HISTORY

Fossil sites in and around Ipswich There are several Triassic fossil sites at Redbank Plains, Dinmore, Mount Crosby and Ebbw Vale according to “Australia’s fossil heritage” by the CSIRO. There are still said to be examples in the Redbank Plains area that show fossils of fish, crocodiles, turtles, birds, insects and plants contained in rocky outcrops of shale and ironstone. Previous specimens were uncovered in the Jones and Brittains roads vicinity. Dinmore Quarry was home to late Triassic flora such as ferns, moss and gymnosperm (conifers, cycads) which have now formed fossils within the Blackstone shale. The site is also said to contain fossils of insects and other invertebrates, which have been preserved in Lacustrine (lake) sediments present in the area. Mount Crosby’s large fossil reserve is located on the old Mount Crosby Railway line adjacent to Mount Crosby Rd near Colleges Crossing and is said

to contain insect fossils which are relatively rare but abundant in this area. Parts of insects such as wings are preserved as fossils in shale deposits along the pipeline easement. Hopefully we will finish it in March after we do the Clipsal 500 in Adelaide and a couple of other shows around the place. That will be released mid-year”. He’s also working on a solo soul album.

• The next AC/DC album is on it’s way! Drummer Phil Rudd says it was recorded in just 10 days and Stevie Young (Malcolm Young’s nephew) was the guitarist on the album. Rudd said: “It sounded so good. It is f***ing good mate. That’s what I can tell you.I enjoyed playing with Stevie. I won’t say it was easy, but I was very comfortable in that situation. I don’t make hard work out of it. In 10 days it was done.” • Two of the biggest awards shows of the year wrapped up in August — The MTV VMAS and The Emmys. Although the VMAS is much more about the shock-and-awe performances than it is the awards, there were still some pretty happy winners. Miley Cyrus picked up Video of the Year for Wrecking Ball; Ed Sheeran – Best Male; Katy Perry – Best Female; Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea – Best Pop; Lorde – Best Rock; and Beyonce – Best Collaboration, Best Video With a Social Message and Best Cinematography.

• How much would you be prepared to pay for a slice of old wedding cake? Not much? Ok, what if it was 33 years old and from Princess Diana’s 1981 wedding to Prince Charles? Well, the going price was $1,487 when it sold in an auction last month. I hope no-one eats that… • Brad and Angelina have finally tied the knot in a low key, rather secret ceremony in France. Jolie was walked down the aisle by her sons Maddox and Pax while daughters Zahara and Vivienna threw petals and twins Shiloh and Knox were the ring bearers. The kids also helped design the wedding veil/train and even picked the flavours of the wedding cakes! • Rocker Bruce Springsteen is moving into writing childrens books: Outlaw Pete. The book is inspired by his 2009 song of the same name, about a baby who robs bank and suffers guilt. Outlaw Pete: The Book is out in November. • Finally, Justin Bieber is in trouble again. The Canadian pop star had a run-in with paparazzi in south western Ontario. Bieber has been charged with assault and dangerous driving after a collision involving a minivan and an all-terrain vehicle. He will appear in court on Sept 29. New road at Brookwater named after pioneer A convict who became a pillar of the Ipswich community is the subjetc of the name of the city’s newest road opened to traffic recently. Councillor David Morrison said Eden Station Drive was a new link road providing a local traffic connection between Augusta Parkway and Springfield Greenbank Arterial Road (just behind the new railway station). The road name was associated with former convict James Josey who owned a significant portion of the land from Springfield to Redbank Plains in the 1800s. His property was called Eden Station, after the ship Eden II which was the last convict ship to arrive in the colony of New South Wales. James Josey was given passage on the ship after being declared to be not a fit and proper person to reside in Mother England after they did not take kindly to his apparent penchant for highway robbery. Mr Josey and his wife Harriet were the first white settlers in the area after building their homestead on 420 hectares in Springfield. The new road will greatly improve transport

services in the local area. “Eventually 86,000 people will call the Springfield area home and Eden Station Drive has been a major project to handle the region’s anticipated growth. “This allows residents to travel more easily between important transport hubs and other facilities in the area including a convenient link to the new Springfield Central Railway Station.” James Josey arrived in New South Wales in 1840 and was sent to Moreton Bay in April 1841. He received his Ticket of Leave in April 1847 and from 1859 became one of the pioneers of the Redbank Plains area. Mr Josey purchased 1000 acres of land on Opossum Creek and commenced dairy farming and grazing. He later added 5700 acres to his original holding turning it into the largest estate in the neighbourhood. Mr Josey died in 1908 and was buried in Ipswich Cemetery. At the time of his death at the age of 86-years-old, Mr Josey was the owner of 350 acres of farming land at Redbank Plains and 7000 acres at Opossum Creek.

RAAF airmen train on heavy machinery

DEFENCE

The earth moving activity in this photo is a sight that many people in Ipswich would not be aware of. It is awe-inspiring but a view not open to the general public. It is the site of Air Force training at Willowbank.

1CCS moving into the future No 1 Combat Communication Squadron is preparing for a workforce reorganisation, to better provide communications and information systems (CIS) services. For 50 years, 1CCS has predominately been based at RAAF Base Richmond. Early next year, 1CCS headquarters will relocate to RAAF Base Amberley and a 1CCS flight will be established at RAAF Base Edinburgh. It has had the mission of providing a specialised range of deployable communications services, information systems, navigational aids and advice in support of ADF, allied and regional forces within Australia and at deployed locations. The establishment of a 1CCS flight at

Edinburgh will provide local CIS support to the recently established No. 3 Security Forces Squadron, the intelligence community within AOSG and future aircraft platforms, such as the P-8 Poseidon. The outcomes of these projects will result in 1CCS being co-located with its major customers and stakeholders at RAAF Bases Amberley, Williamtown and Edinburgh, with an organisational structure equipped to meet RAAF and ADF CIS needs well into the future. Photo: LAC Shane Strickland, LAC Jesse Smith, LAC Shaun Helbig, LAC Daniel Godlevsky, LAC Luke Marsden, CPL Liam Stewart and FSGT Andrew Maddison.

Have you been looking everywhere for a ring that’s unique? We can show you how to design and create a dream ring that is totally unique to you.

Opposite Willowbank Raceway is the Veolia Ti Tree Bio Energy facility. In previous years it was a coal mine, one of more than 600 developed in the Ipswich region over the past century. In recent years the massive holes left in the ground have been used for landfill, putting the rubbish of Ipswich and South East Queensland piled up for 20 odd years, and finally covered over where as it rots, methane is collected and converted into energy. With one massive hole filled, there are two more which sit ready for filling. They are NOT toys in the picture, they are real, full size diggers, dump trucks and bobcats! RAAF members from all over the country are coming to Ipswich to get valuable experience on heavy machinery. On deployment, quite often heavy machinery is required to move earth whether it is building a runway or making a clearing for a camp, and it was only recently that the RAAF realized there was a facility just minutes from RAAF Amberley which could be utilized for machine training. Allan Tierney from Ebenezer Employment and Training works with the RAAF to train the ADF personnel who come from all over the country to get valuable experience. “This Ebenezer mine closed around 12 years ago. There is still coal here, you can see it on the sides of the pit,” he said. “Anybody male or female over 18 years old can be trained to operate these machines, but you need to clock up the hours. They can be trained in either a civil or mining qualification. Often the only way to get a qualification for mining is to do training on a mine site or a quarry, so this location is perfect. “Initially when the RAAF were sending staff here, I assumed it was

just from Amberley, but we’ve found lots coming from Townsville and Richmond. Previously they had to drive to north of Brisbane, but this is just minutes from RAAF Amberley. “This group of trainees mainly do back hoe training and work on the bobcats. There are all kinds of skills needed in their profession, along with electricians and plumbers for example. “On average they get 40 hours a week of theory and practical experience.” LAC Stuart Reed from RAAF Townsville has only been in the ADF for six months, and is enjoying the chance to get some practical experience. “This is all part of our core training, and this is just the first phase,” LAC Reed said. “It’s a core competency so we can get experience to get to the level where we are deployable. I’m here for two weeks, and the training is more for deployment, like going overseas where often we have to maintain airfields.” Below: Back row from L-R: Tim Gillam (Manager EET), LAC Cody Linsey, AC Nathan Foster, LAC Mitchell Jaeyer, Danial Swain (EET trainer ) Front row: LAC Adrian Fisher, LAC Stuart Reed, Allan Tierney (EET), LAC Chris Arnold.

Providing staff new uniforms is something that can be a bit of a task...getting everyone’s measurements and making sure that it all fits right. Imagine having to do this for 6,000 staff at RAAF Amberley, as the Air Force hands out the new work uniforms, with a roll out to other bases around Australia to follow. In September 2013, the Chief of Air Force confirmed the introduction of a General Purpose Uniform (GPU). The GPU will provide a consistent look for all Air Force personnel and enable Air Force members and their families to take pride in a unique and more easily identifiable Air Force identity. But best of all, the whole project is creating Australian jobs, with all the clothing to be made locally, providing direct economic benefits to the Australian community. RAAF Amberley personnel are the first to be issued with the new, distinctively blue, uniforms. The GPU is less expensive than the current Disruptive Pattern Camouflage Uniform as it does not have the same camouflage requirements for warlike conditions. Where an operational threat exists, appropriate clothing and equipment will be issued to meet the specific activity requirement. The General Purpose Uniform is similar to the current Disruptive Camouflage Uniform It will have the same cut and 9 : 5trim 5 however PM it contains variations of blue rather than green, which

represents the same colours that we work with every day — our service dress uniform, the Air Force Ensign and of course the aircraft. The GPU will be worn for base duties, Defence Aid to the Civil Community such as flood relief, and you may even see them utilized during humanitarian relief taskings in the future Army and Air Force will still wear the green Disruptive Camouflage Patterned Uniform during field exercises. The GPU was launched at the Centenary of Military Aviation air show on 1 Mar 14. A small number of personnel working at CMA14 were issued the GPU and a more comprehensive rollout program has now been enacted as production increased. Most members will have their first set of GPU by the end of the year. Below: Flight Lieutenant Dominique Hoffman and Corporal Jenna Kowald.

MONEY & PROPERTY

more your savings can earn with slightly higher interest rates and/or bigger deposits. Have a look at a calculator like the one on Canstar.com.au: it allows you to calculate different scenarios for reaching your goals, by changing the interest rate and the term deposit or savings account. Look further afield than your transaction bank. Many Australians save in an account at their current bank, but the higher yields are often at second-tier banks and other institutions. Negotiate directly with institutions and find the highest interest rates for your money, not just the advertised rates. Decide what rate you should be earning and ask for it. Identify alternatives to savings accounts and term deposits: alternatives that offer higher yields but with similar risk profiles. For instance, managed funds, cash management accounts, and ‘active’ cash accounts can give you as much as 1 per cent per annum interest more than the online savings accounts. Establish a set-and-forget approach to meeting your goals. You should look at an automated direct debit to create forced savings, and think about strategies such as diverting the extra income you get from a pay rise into savings. Talk to a professional. If you’re confused about interest rates, terms or strategy, seek advice from a financial planner or accountant. There are so many resources that allow you to be fully informed and reach your goals, but you have to use them and you have to be prepared to act. So do your homework, set your goals and get your money working as hard as you do! MATTERS Get saving savvy BY MARK BOURIS

We’re well into a new financial year and having got your taxes out of the way it’s time to think about making your money work harder for you. Saving sounds good in theory, but where do you start and how do you boost your cash? Here are some simple tips: Set a goal. Know what you want to do with your money, how much you’ll need and what you need to do to get there. Goals don’t only give you a target to aim for, they also produce a ‘reward’. It may be a holiday you’re saving for or a house deposit or the down-payment on a new car. Whatever your savings goal, name it and give it a monetary value. Reduce or eliminate your credit card and store card balances. These facilities charge as high as 20 per cent per annum —much higher than you can earn for your savings. To have your cash working for you, direct your windfalls such as tax refunds and work bonuses to eliminating your credit card debt. Compare short and long term deposit rates to find the best rate for your savings. Also, make sure you compare ‘savings account’ products with term deposits, and don’t forget to compare fees and charges. Use savings calculators to see how much

BEHIND THE

WHEEL Nikki takes ‘Girl Power’ to a new level There can’t be too many people who can claim to have driven a car over 300 kilometres an hour, and probably not too many women in their mid twenties. But for Nikki Hepburn, it’s all in a day’s fun because her hobby is drag racing, and she wouldn’t want it any other way. A self confessed car enthusiast her whole life, Nikki grew up with a father who was mad for cars. Nikki was in Ipswich recently for the Jamboree Bonanza at Willowbank Raceway, so Ipswich Life took the chance to find out what it is like driving at such breakneck speeds. Nikki laughed when told she doesn’t look like the average drag racer, or does she? “I hear that a lot, that I don’t look like the average driver,” Nikki said. “I’m simply a car freak. My dad used to be part of a pro stock team and he’s always been into cars. “I’ve always been around cars but my partner got into the drag racing scene. Dad got himself a drag car, and he asked me if I’d like to drive it and that was it! “It is an expensive hobby, my dad has put lots of money into the car, he thinks over $100,000, which is actually the cheaper side of most cars. We’re trying to get sponsorship at the moment.” Nikki races a Gemini, a classic Aussie car, and only has a few seconds to show off her skills as she races to the finish line. “We do a burnout first to warm up the tyres, then we wait for the lights and go for gold. The track is 400 metres and it’s simply a race to the end. The fastest speed I’ve got up to is 325 kilometres an hour! “People say ‘wow that looked crazy’ but you get used to it. You do get an adrenaline rush but you don’t have time to think about it.” Nikki races between ten and twelve times a year right across the East Coast, and it’s a hobby that allows her to immerse herself with other car ‘freaks’.

“We race between ten and twelve times a year, mainly in Ipswich, Warwick, Gladstone and Sydney. It’s an awesome pastime, as we are surrounded by our mates all the time at these events. “You don’t really need specialist training, but you do have to pass some licensing tests before you can get on the track, about three of them. It’s a simple case of getting lots of practice behind the wheel and getting up your confidence. Willowbank is our favourite spot for racing, we think of that as our home track. Ultimately it’s a hobby, I don’t plan to make a career out of it, as by day I’m a service manager at my Dad’s business,” Nikki said. So what do her workmates think of what she does on weekends? “They think I’m crazy, and they don’t like the noise when the car starts up in the downstairs workshop! The secret I guess to this is having a car with a big motor, turbos and most importantly, a driver that isn’t afraid to go fast!”

Mazda Motor Corporation has celebrated the unveiling of the fourth generation Mazda MX-5 together with fans, at events held simultaneously in Japan, the US and Spain. The All-New MX-5, which adopts both SKYACTIV Technology and Mazda’s ‘KODO Soul of Motion’ design language, will be rolled out to global markets starting in 2015. TheMX-5 is an iconic model representing Mazda’s vehicle-engineering philosophy - the pursuit of driving pleasure. “Innovate in order to preserve” was the motto for the fourth generation, as the development team searched for innovations that go beyond simple evolution. Environmental and safety demands are much more stringent than they were when the first generation MX-5 was introduced 25 years ago, but the fourth generation stays true to the model’s original aim of offering the pure driving fun that only a lightweight sports car can. It achieves this through the adoption of SKYACTIV Technology and refinement of its appeal to the senses and sensations through which people enjoy cars. The design of the All-New MX-5 reveals another layer to Mazda’s KODO design language. The proportions make the driver and passenger stand out, and both the interior and exterior evoke the exhilaration of open-top driving. It is the most compact of any generation MX-5 so far and is more than 100 kilograms lighter than the model it replaces, promising a dramatic leap in driving fun. As of July 2014, total production volume of the Mazda MX-5 exceeded 940,000 units and it continues to hold the Guinness World Record for the best-selling two-seater sports car. This model has received over 200 awards from around the globe including Japan Car of the Year 2005-2006. For information on all things Mazda, contact local dealer Ipswich Mazda on 3817 3600.

Toyota named ‘Top Picks’

[

]

Six Toyota vehicles including the locally built Camry Hybrid have been named as top picks for Australian new-car buyers by the Carsales editorial site www.motoring.com.au.

Toyota’s family-oriented Kluger SUV, 86 sports car, LandCruiser 200 Series and Prado, and Prius v hybrid wagon also made the list of cars recommended by the site’s motoring experts. The new-generation seven-seat Kluger, launched in March, features a stylish design with more emotional appeal while engineers have delivered a more engaging drive and liberated more interior space. So far this year, Camry Hybrid is the country’s top-selling hybrid car, the 86 heads the sports-car market, LandCruiser 200 is dominant in its segment and Prado sales are up more than eight per cent. Prius v is the third member of the expanded Prius family that also includes the third-generation Prius hatch and the Prius c city car. Carsales editor-in-chief Mike Sinclair said the recommended vehicles have been judged on their performance, refinement, handling, suitability for purpose and value for money. He said resale value, reliability and factors

such as warranty and the availability of benefits such as capped-price servicing were also considered. “The cars we choose are the best in their respective segments and represent great buying choices for new car shoppers,” Mr Sinclair said.
