STICKS, STONES, BROKEN PRESENTED BY IPSWICH ART GALLERY 27 JUNE - 4 JULY - TWO “Pieces of junk including foam, cardboard and fluff turn into a magical world of shadow puppets…. Achtem’s imagination is glorious and his one-man show has so many characters and interesting situations, you can’t help but be captivated” – The Adelaide Advertiser

Hilarious puppet show ...it’s all rubbish

Be prepared to laugh, be inspired and be captivated at the Ipswich Art Gallery these school holidays, when Bunk Puppets bring us Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones. Having toured the world to critical acclaim, it’s now time for Ipswich to be enthralled by this unique shadow puppet show. As the lights go down, shadow puppets make their transformation from everyday household rubbish to hilarious live cartoons. The audience will be kept enthralled as junk becomes surreal flying chickens or sneaky ninjas in craftily created scenarios. In this one-man show, Canadian-born puppeteer Jeff Achtem uses his entire body, and some sound effects, to create a range of characters right in front of the audience.

“The laughs began within seconds of the show starting and didn’t stop until the end of this crazy puppet show” – The Independent Weekly (Adelaide) All over the world, audiences have called Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones “hilarious”, “captivating”, “magical” and “inspiring”. For those in the audience that like to participate, there’s sure to be opportunities amongst the creation of a crazy cast of characters. This performance truly is a feast for the imagination, where any bit of old rubbish can become a character with a story to tell.

“One of the most spellbinding moments of puppet theatre that I have ever encountered.” - The Stage (UK)

SHOWS DAILY “It’s hard to imagine a more entertaining, generous or inspirational show — 5 STARS” – Fringe Review (Adelaide) Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said, “This show continues the Children’s Gallery philosophy of presenting award-winning, creative and engaging programs for children and families.

“In this performance, the puppeteer does not hide behind a screen. Instead, he shows off his mastery by creating puppets in front of the audience. “With this kind of performance, the Gallery hopes to inspire children to get creative. Maybe they’ll go home to make their own shadow puppets and create their own performances. “Ipswich families are in for a real treat with this performance and I’m sure it will be popular. This is fun that the whole family can enjoy at an affordable price.”

Sticks, Stones, Broken Bones is on at the Ipswich Art Gallery Saturday 27 June to Saturday 11 July. With adults at kids prices, all tickets are just $7 each. Under two-year-olds are free. Special preview shows are on Sunday 21 June for those keen to see it first. Book early to avoid disappointment! Ed is ‘Paying Attention’ STAR CHAT CELEBRITY NEWS

Ed Kavalee is the voice on Triple M in the morning, he’s married to ‘Biggest Loser’ trainer and author Tiffany Hall, and was a regular player on the hit show ‘Thank God You’re Here’. Now, Ed has the best seat in the house for Ten’s Monday night comedy show ‘Have You Been Paying Attention’ (HYBPA). Ed has also starred on TV Burp, Cup Fever, plus appeared on radio shows with Tony Martin, Cal Wilson and so many more.

‘Have You Been Paying Attention?’ with Ed Kavalee screens Monday nights on TEN.

You could say, life is pretty good for Ed Kavalee especially when he has to pinch himself every day that he is working with people he idolised for many years. For Ed, one day he’s recording a show in Sydney, then back to Brisbane for radio, then it’s back down south for his Foxtel commitments, then up again early for radio… the first question has to be ‘how do you do it?’ “You just do what you have to do,” Ed said. “I realise I’m lucky to first have a job and then you feel luckier that you get to do fun jobs, working with good people… you don’t feel it, you just do it. “I think ‘Sunday… yay. It’s HYBPA day. Tuesday: soccer day, and so on. The show is recorded on a Sunday night to keep it as topical as possible, and is recorded as if it was a live show, which gives it a great energy. “We normally record it on a Sunday night. It’s pretty close, what you see is what we do, and its over before you know it. It’s a genuinely ‘live’ vibe. We do it like we did ‘Thank God You’re Here’. We ran it as if it was a live show, and it goes so fast. The vibe in the room is electric because it’s all happening. I think sometimes they will trim some of the more letigious items. I’ve been at recordings before where it goes really long and they whittle it down, but not with HYBPA.”

The show initially began on a Sunday night where it struggled to find an audience, but the move to a later timeslot, and then to Monday prime time, has turned the show into a mainstream hit. “I think to the maker’s credit, they let it develop, and the network just they let it go. We were up against the news on Sunday when we started, and they kept faith with it. They let us do our thing and eventually it found the audience. It’s a show that really has evolved over time.” Ed is back living in his home town along with his wife Tiffany Hall. As a personal trainer, early mornings are part of their routine, and Ed is enjoying being back in South East Queensland. “It was easy for me, moving back here. We stayed with my rellies when we first moved here. I have friends making TV and living here, it’s good that they don’t have that attitude that they ‘have to move’ down south any more. “Tiff likes hot weather. She likes to get up early and exercise, plus she’s very ‘beachy’, and always dragging me to this beach and that beach. “I went to a Men’s Health Day recently. This dermatologist told me to strip down to my underwear, and she does a full inspection of me for skin cancers. She said ‘you’re all clear of suspicious spots.’ Oh great I thought. She said, ‘Yeah, you’re really pasty… but you’ll be alright

for a while.’ I’m not sure if she’s paying me a compliment or not! “Right now Tiff is in Sydney doing ‘Biggest Loser’, so lately when we have ‘Date Night’ we catch up at the Qantas Lounge! Very romantic.” Ed sits in the same spot each week on the show, and loves having certain people up the back with him. “Whenever I see Jane Kennedy, I think ‘here we go’, as we never get to see each other as much as we’d like. But she’s good as she knows about the ‘Real Housewives of Melbourne’ inside out, and she may look nice, but she has some wicked one liners. “Then there’s Kate Langbroek. She brings a different energy to the room, and she moves people in a fun direction which I really like, so whenever I see those two I know we’re going to have a good time. Glen Robbins was up the back with me once, and he’s good in that he sits there and bides his time. He will sit there and wait, and when he does have an answer he knocks it out of the park. I love watching him work like that. “But I am enjoying things right now. I’m enjoying radio on Triple M and the other day I was doing a pre-game with Gordon Tallis. If you’d have sat down with 9 year old me, and told me I’d be doing this with Gordon Tallis, I’d never have believed you. “I’ve been so lucky. I left university and had no ideas, no plans of what to do. I was asleep in the ‘Black Thunder’ in Sydney and my phone rang. It was a lady called Deb from Working Dog. It was the week after I was the reader at an audition for a film. Next thing my best friend Josh Lawson and I get a role in the movie ‘BoyTown’. A week later I met Tony Martin at a party who was impressed that my favourite movie was ‘Withnail & I’. Next thing we’re on radio together!”

Lee, who kept the students informed of where they were and the history behind each site. “He was a wealth of knowledge, he knew so much about World War I. One of the beaches the troops landed at, I could totally understand why it would be so hard to get up, you just had to look at it to realise why. To see it for myself made it make a lot of sense in regards to the history of the Gallipoli campaign. “Being there, you really could sense the history. The edge of the shoreline looked red at dawn, and it really gave me the shivers. “A few of the kids on the tour had relatives who fought in Gallipoli, so it was extra special for them. I’d recommend anyone go to the Dawn Service at Gallipoli,” Majella said “The best part to was to research two random soldiers, and then we had to find their graves. For me, that was so moving, and it brought all that history to life right before my eyes. “ Majella’s fellow students at St Mary’s also raised money at school for the Mates4Mates charity, which supports veterans and their families. Making and selling ANZAC biscuits at school, and through other projects, they raised over $1,000. “You don’t realise until you see for yourself the impact World War I had on that part of the world. We visited so many cemeteries, over 30, but we also drove past so many that I honestly lost count,” Majella said. “It was an amazing experience.”

Entries are now open for the 2015 Ipswich Enviroplan Photographic Competition! This year’s prize pool of over $5000 is up for grabs, and photographers don’t need to be an expert to get on the winner’s list. Previous winner Matthew Watson joined Ipswich City Council’s Councillor Heather Morrow and wildlife and nature photographer Michael Snedic to launch the 2015 Enviroplan Photographic competition. Matthew’s entry ‘Golden Wings’ won in the ‘Native Insects and Arachnids of Ipswich’ category in the 2014 awards. Professional photographer Michael Snedic, who will be running free workshops as part of his commitment to the competition, said that anyone could win, no matter what kind of camera they use. “I’d encourage people to use whatever camera they have to get out there,” Michael said. “If you have a digital SLR of course you can do much more than you can with a smartphone, but keep trying. Don’t go for just one pic in one location, take lots of photos and get that one perfect shot. “Look around you, that photo could be right in front of you without even realizing it. “There’s a lot of things so good about Matthew’s photo,” Michael added. “It’s very well composed, and everything just works. It proves being at the right time at the right place can get a great result!” Matthew said that capturing the winning shot came about purely by chance. “I was shooting in Queens Park and spotted this dragonfly. I got up as close as I could, shot the picture, and it came out. I was so happy when I won,” he said. Cr Morrow said the search was on again for images that best capture Ipswich’s rich natural heritage, with categories open to anyone with a love for the great outdoors. “This year we have added new

Majella Pearl, a year 11 student at St. Mary’s College was selected as one of several Queensland secondary school students to visit Gallipoli and the Western Front battlefields, as part of a prize put up by the State Government. The Premier’s Anzac Prize encourages young Queenslanders to better understand the Anzac legacy and share their knowledge with others and the prize included travel, accommodation and flights. For Majella, it was her first overseas trip, and one she will never forget. “I heard on the radio about a competition, and to enter we had to create a two to five minute video presentation on three themes of the ANZAC tradition, including the past, present and future,” Majella said. “I put the entry in, and they called me and told me I’d qualified! I did it in Ipswich, kept it local, and it turns out I was the only person from Ipswich to get on the trip! “I went on my own, which was my first trip overseas. In past years only five students have gone, but as it was the 100th anniversary, they took seventy students. I was more excited than nervous to be honest. We camped there for the ceremony, and seeing the sun come up that day, with over 10,000 people was something that I’ll never forget.” The tour went for two weeks, taking in historical sites like Gallipoli, several from the Western Front and of course Turkey. Accompanying the tour was war historian Roger

Enrol with TAFE Queensland South West and make change happen We’re half-way through the year, which means school holidays soon for some, and introspection for others. For example: your goals for this year — are you on track? Are you as happy as you planned to be? Have you achieved that work/life balance you wrote down as a new year’s resolution? If not, you might wish to consider joining the growing number of ‘career changers’ enrolling at TAFE Queensland South West — those who have decided they want more, deserve more, and have decided to change career paths by enrolling in something completely different. As semester two looms, and with payment plans, VET FEE-HELP, and Certificate III Guarantee options available (to eligible students), now might be a good time to become a career changer yourself! You might even wish to draw some inspiration from the TAFE Queensland South West career changers below!

Abbey Desbor ough

TAFE Quensland South West career changers Abbey Desborough is a dental nurse, and is also enrolled in a Diploma

of Nursing with TAFE in Bundamba. Abbey took on the qualification and career path given her passion and experience for patient care, and, the desire to take on a new challenge. She has found the course to be exactly that (challenging) and enjoyable, and has the goal to gain employment as a nurse, and then ascend the ranks even further. “Having great teachers who are approachable and extremely helpful, makes it a whole lot easier,” Abbey said about her career change. As for Abbey’s advice to others considering a career change, she offered; “It doesn’t matter how old or young you are, if it’s something you want — go for it! Find what makes you happy and challenge yourself. You won’t know unless you try.”

Cause George

Shelly Bell

George Cause is completing his Certificate III in Automotive Technology through Recognition of Prior Learning and gap training at TAFE in Bundamba. In a previous life he taught construction, whilst also working as a handyman to supplement his income. George chose to reskill in automotive technology as he also used to do a lot of casual work at a garage, and enjoyed fixing things. “I chose auto so I could make a living doing something I enjoy. The course is great — I get to learn something new every day, particularly with testing the electronics of modern cars,” George said. Not surprisingly, George is very positive and encouraging to those considering a career change saying; “It’s the best decision you could make — it’s never too late to learn something new.” Shelly Bell spent the last three years working as an executive assistant at one of Australia’s leading insurance, banking and finance companies. Prior to that, she held personal assistant roles within the company, and whilst she enjoyed the challenges and working with some really driven and talented people, her heart just wasn’t in it. Instead, Shelly had a great love of food and would spend most evenings researching new trends in the food industry, watching tutorials and practising these methods… After some gentle encouragement from her husband, and speaking with TAFE Queensland South West’s patisserie chef, she learnt about the support and industry contacts the teaching staff could provide students, but what got her over the line (and enrolled in a Certificate III in Patisserie!) was the industry-current, modern kitchen and equipment.

Coming Soon to TAFE Queensland South West: Do you have family members or friends in Inala wanting to embark on a new (or change their current) career path? For the first time, TAFE in Inala is offering the following courses, conveniently scheduled between 4–7pm, kicking off in Semester 2. • • • • • •

Certificate II in Hairdressing Certificate II in Nail Technology Certificate II in Retail Services Certificate III in Aged Care Certificate III in Business Administration Certificate III in Early Childhood Education & Care • Certificate III in Education Support To find out more, TAFE in Inala (54 Thrush St, Inala) will be hosting an information evening on Wednesday July 1 between 6-7pm, so prospective students can speak with teachers and get a feel for each course and its career paths! For more information please call 1300 914 754. “The course has been brilliant! I feel my confidence has grown and I am excited about the future. Chef answers our unending list of questions and provides hands onclasses for us to try new techniques. We also prepare meals for service in our campus restaurant, ‘The Miner’s Right’, which also sees us planning, preparing and plating up as we would in a real restaurant,” Shelly said. On graduation Shelly plans to work in a few different styles of restaurants, believing the more diversity in her ‘repertoire’ the better. Shelly’s also set herself a five-year goal — to open her own patisserie/cafe. Shelly is a big advocate for making the change through TAFE Queensland South West, saying; “If you are not happy doing what you’re doing and you are in a job that just pays the bills, or if there is another career you feel would make working a little easier, have a chat to the friendly staff at TAFE Queensland South West. They have lots of study options and different payment options that made it easier for me to make the move. It won’t take long and could be the best thing you do for yourself and your future.” Inspired? If you’re thinking of becoming a career changer, please visit www.tafesouthwest.edu.au or call 1300 914 754 for more information.

Celebrating 40 Years There’s not a more iconic building in our city than the Ipswich Civic Centre. Since 1975 it has been the cultural centre of Ipswich, staging everything from weddings, parties and balls, to plays, ballet and theatre - plus hosting the best in Australian and international music, theatre, dance and comedy. Construction of the Civic Centre began in 1974, and it officially opened its doors the following year. The Federal Government in 1975, under then Prime Minister Gough Whitlam, was very keen to create cultural centres throughout Australia; and Ipswich was interested in building its own performing space. State and Federal funding helped support the creation of the Civic Centre in 1975. Opening Night 1975

EDUCATION Discover a Catholic school near you Students from Immaculate Heart School, One Mile, will enjoy this year’s Catholic Education Week festivities. Places are filling quickly in Catholic schools as more families choose a Catholic education for their children, so now is the time for parents to think about enrolling for 2016. Catholic schools now educate almost one in five Queensland children and a highlight of the school year is Catholic Education Week (CEW) celebrations. This year the inaugural ‘Festival of Catholic Education’ will highlight the week’s theme — Engaging Minds. Igniting Hearts. Serving Others. The unique three-day festival, held in the grounds of St Stephen’s Cathedral, will include various activities, designed by students for students, within a market space, stage acts and precinct tours. Ms Betts said the festival will help give students a unique perspective on the history and role of the Church in Catholic education. “Schools have planned a wide range of activities of their own to celebrate Catholic Education Week, but this

festival will serve as a focal point for all that our schools do to further the mission of the Church throughout south-east Queensland,” Ms Betts said. “I’m looking forward to seeing the Cathedral filled with students and teachers from our primary and secondary schools, joining together to showcase the contribution made by Catholic education and the hundreds of thousands of people who have been educated in our schools,” she said. Battle of the Bands in Ipswich Here’s some info about some of the bands who have already signed up to battle it out on Saturday July 4th at Ipswich City Square! We’ll have more in the next issue of Ipswich Life.

Tesla Coil Tesla Coil is a Brisbane-based three-piece alternative rock band. Not alternative in the way the loud-mouth behind you in high school with bleached hair was alternative, but in the way that you put a banjo and a flute into a rock group and call it edgy. Forming in 2013 (depending on who you ask), Fin, Sarah, and James have travelled all around the Brisbane music scene making audiences raise eyebrows at their unorthodox instrumentation and bizarre song themes. Since the release of their debut EP “A Thing That Sits There” in August 2014, and their follow up double single in January 2015, the trio have continued to gain experience and develop their sound, playing at famous Brisbane haunts like The Zoo, New Globe Theatre, and Ric’s Bar. With comparisons to Arcade Fire, Ben Folds Five, and Grinspoon all being drawn by guys who’ve come up to them after shows, Tesla Coil tries to reflect all the stylistic concepts you could want, and maybe a few that you don’t.

SeaNic Sounds This Hervey Bay-based sibling duo, are singers/songwriters, showcasing beat-boxing, violin, guitar and vocals. Playing an extensive array of musical genres, including covers and original material, from pop to funk to hip-hop, R&B, rock and more! SeaNic Sounds’ name originates from an amalgamation of Sean and Nicola. They always want to take those who hear them, on a journey through musical scenery, hence the coincidental, and fortunate phonetic play on the name, ‘SeaNic’. SeaNic Sounds have a passion for music. Doing public/private gigs, corporate gigs, weddings, birthday, festivals and more! Sean Barnes a singer/songwriter and guitarist, and, Nicola a singer/songwriter, beat-boxer and violinist. They formed SeaNic Sounds in mid-2011, combining their collective musical talents. For the past 4 years SeaNic Sounds have travelled extensively performing at public, private, corporate functions and festivals.

Until Home is made up of its four members; Mitchell Hartley on drums, Clayton Mullins on the bass, Matt Reisinger on lead guitar and vocals and front man Michael Trapp. With mutual respect for each other the boys aren’t ashamed to say they’re a tight group of friends who love each other and feel privileged to work together. The band officially formed as a four piece back in November 2013, but originally began as an acoustic duo comprising of long time friends Matt and Michael earlier that year. The boys wrote and played music together since their early teens inspired by the likes of their favourite artists John Mayer, Dave Matthews, Coldplay, Dallas Green and many other gifted writers and musicians. After many jam sessions over the years between Clay and Mitch with the other two boys but nothing official as a group, they discovered a unique and dynamic sound when the four lads fused together Clay and Mitch’s love for anthemic rock bands such as Imagine Dragons, Bastille and punk rock band Paramore they knew they were on to something, now boasting a unique sound of modern rock blended with indie pop and electro. From catchy synth hooks, Matt’s skilful guitar parts, powerful lyrics and rhythms to make you move, the boys have had an overwhelming response from new listeners!

WHAT’S NEW IN

BOOKS

Passion for the country Fiona Palmer never expected to spend her days writing for a living. She has lived her whole live in a tiny rural town in Western Australia...and when we say tiny, we mean tiny! Fiona lives in the tiny rural town of Pingaring in Western Australia, three and a half hours south-east of Perth. She discovered Danielle Steel at the age of eleven, and has now written her own brand of rural romance over six books with two more to come. Her rise to the top of the ‘Rural Romance’ genre is an amazing story, and we caught up with Fiona when she was in town for a book signing. She has extensive farming experience, does the local mail run, and was a speedway-racing driver for seven years. She spends her days writing, helping out in the community and looking after her two children. “I live three and a half hours south of Perth.

10 Ipswich Life

I was born and raised there. There’s seriously just five houses in our town,” Fiona said. “One house is mine, my neighbours, my mum and dad, a shop, a house for the shopkeepers, a hall, a school that’s closed down, one more house…and that’s it. That’s my town. “I went away to boarding school as a chid, and at that time I was racing speedway so when I left school I had plans to do things of course, but I really wanted to keep racing. I raced a Torana for seven years, right up until I fell pregnant.” Fiona had the kind of childhood that is lost to a whole generation. Long summer days, where you would just play outside all day, only coming back to the house to eat and go

outside again. It’s a childhood that will be foreign to many who live in big cities. “I write about an amazing childhood all the time in my books, and it’s what we do together as a community that inspires me to write. I was no good at English. My spelling and grammar was shocking, and it never crossed my mind to be writer, But I did love to write stories. As I couldn’t spell I always got bad marks, so my teachers never focussed on the story. “It was only when I was so busy with kids and running a shop that I started writing seriously. I just combined everything I loved, including a strong female character who is just ‘having a go’. The girls I write about are always strong characters. I just write not because I love words, but I love the story, the journey you go on, and sharing tales of what it is like to live in the country. “My son loves his Minecraft, but my kids are really outdoors children. They go out and you don’t see them all day. You can still do that in the country, especially where I am, it’s such a safe community, and I don’t have to worry about anything, it’s such a close community. The hard part is getting them to come inside!” Fiona’s first book ‘The Family Farm’ came about purely because there was a story waiting to be told, as Fiona explained. “When I had my first book in my mind I was putting it together and I couldn’t store it all up there, so I started writing it down and my family said it was great, even at 50,000 words, and they suggested I do something with it. So I went online and I found about a Mentoring

program, and I entered my book. I was one of 10 people to get time with an author,” Fiona said. “I had no idea how to set out a manuscript and set word counts for example. “My auntie sent me a book and said ‘its just like yours’ which was Rachael Treasures ‘Jillaroo’, published by Penguin. I wrote them a letter, said I loved that book and there should be more like them. I included my first three chapters, which you’re not supposed to, but I did. “A few weeks later I got an email saying it had gone to Rachael Treasure’s publisher, and they asked for the full script. I then got an email offering me a contract to publish my first book! “Now I’m a full time writer. My kids go off to school and I write all day. I can’t imagine doing anything else now to be honest.” The Rural Romance genre of books is huge in Australia, and Fiona is at the forefront of books that fly off the shelves. She has a theory as to why it is so popular. “I guess you can thank shows like ‘McLeods Daugters’ and ‘The Farmer Wants a Wife’ as they paint such a romantic imagery of the country. Maybe for city people it’s a complete escape?”

Last week, Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann joined with Somerset Regional Council to officially open the new Kropps Bridge and Toogoolawah Pedestrian Bridge, built with joint Commonwealth, State and local Council funding. Mr Neumann said these new concrete flood resistant bridges are vital to ensuring that local infrastructure holds up to the harsh and extreme weather in the Somerset region. “The new $1.1 million Kropps Bridge at Gregors Creek provides a vital road link for our community while the Toogoolawah Pedestrian Bridge pays tribute to Toogoolawah’s history with references to the former Nestles Condensery Milk Factory, an important part of our community’s story,” Mr Neumann said. “It took 16 weeks to replace the old timber Toogoolawah Pedestrian Bridge with a new concrete crossing for cyclists, pedestrians and horses that will last for generations to come. “These two projects are some of the best examples of the infrastructure that can be delivered when all three levels of government put their hand in their pocket and support local communities “I encourage locals to join me and Somerset Regional Council in opening these new bridges.” Below: Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann, Somerset Mayor Graeme Lehmann and Member for Ipswich West Jim Madden on the new pedestrian bridge at Toogoolawah.

Give obesity the boot: Part 2 We went to some of the best experts on food and exercise in Ipswich, and asked them each for five easy, simple tips which ANYONE can introduce from today, FOR FREE…guaranteed to make a difference to your life. Here’s part two, with ten more tips that you can use to make a change in your life for the better. Do one, or do all… either way YOU are the winner, and hopefully we can get that 38.9% obesity number for Ipswich right down before the same survey this time next year. How about it Ipswich? Are you up to the challenge? MY TOP TIPS: Alex Raethke Co-owner & Coach, CrossFit Western Front 1. Use the Stairs: It’s easy to take the elevator or the escalator but using the stairs or walking up a ramp is a quick way to get that little bit of extra exercise in without a huge effort. 2. Get A Bike: Now that more and more people are conscious about their health and fitness, there are plenty of places to park a bicycle and plenty of places to ride one. There are designated bike paths and lanes all over Ipswich. Riding your bicycle can be fun, healthy and a great way to see the sights. 3. All Exercise Counts: Head out for a walk while the kids are at footy training or dance, or even better go for a run! Talk to a few of the other parents into doing it with you for some extra motivation and get fit while being social! 4. Cut Out Excess Sugars: You will be surprised at how much we actually consume. Cut out those soft drinks and replace them

Great events at Woodlands of Marburg There’s heaps going on at Woodlands of Marburg...so mark your calendars! Vintage Fair & Market Day Presenting the annual Vintage Fair and Market day for Woodlands of Marburg featuring over 50 stalls, food, activities and entertainment for the whole family! The mansion will be open for Lunch and High Teas, plus The Jacaranda Café and Marquee will be open for light lunch items, tea and coffee. The oval is hosting children’s

with water. Water keeps your body in good working order and is a lot cheaper that buying canned drinks. Also keep those fruit juices to a minimum. A standard glass of apple juice can contain up to 5 apples. Nobody is going chow down on 5 apples! 5. The Supermarket Circle: You will usually find that most supermarkets have all the good stuff on the perimeter and the processed foods in the middle. Stick to the perimeter where you will find your fresh grocery such as fruits and vegetables, your deli or butcher section where you will have all of your meats and the dairy section where you can pick up your milk. Only venture into the ‘danger’ sections if you really have to!

GOT YOUR OWN TOP TIPS FOR A HEALTHY LIFE? SHARE THEM ON THE IPSWICH LIFE FACEBOOK PAGE TODAY!

MY TOP TIPS: Sarah Shaw Fitness Director, Goodlife Ipswich 1. Get your head right and your body will follow: If you tell yourself you can’t do it then you are probably right. A positive mindset can overcome many obstacles. Start by being positive and you will be amazed at what you can achieve. 2. One meal period at a time: How many times have you said ‘I am starting Monday and I am going to eat perfectly’, but you only to get to afternoon tea and eat something naughty so you have to start again next Monday? Not anymore. Break the day into meal periods. Get from breakfast to morning tea eating well, tick that meal period off and start the next meal period. If you happen to fall off the wagon you have only ruined one meal period and you can start fresh on the next instead of ruining an entire day or even week! 3. Stay up to date: Did you know they have recently re-launched the food pyramid? Healthy vegetables and fruit feature as the main base of the pyramid which is exactly what you want to be eating most of. 4. Rest up: Hitting a weight loss plateau is frustrating but increasing your exercise is not always the answer. The body does most of its work and repair during the rest phase. So listen to your body and enjoy a rest day. 5. It’s not going to happen overnight but it will happen: One bad meal is not going to make you fat, same as one good day of eating is not going to drop those unwanted kilos! Be patient and be realistic with your eating.

Happy 75th Anniversary RAAF Base Amberley June marks 75 years of operations at RAAF Base Amberley. During World War II Amberley was home to a large contingent of US Army Air Force Unit. The role of the base has changed over the years to suit the needs of the times including aircraft operations, training, assembly, repair and salvage of aircraft. The strategic location in Ipswich saw Amberley serve as a staging point for personnel and equipment being sent to the War effort during World War II. The Amberley base we know today has expanded into operational flying and is home to some of the most high-tech aircraft in Australia. Amberley has grown to become the Royal Australian Air Force’s largest base with more than 5,000 people currently employed on site. Congratulations for meeting this milestone and thank you for the last 75 years of service.

Search is on for Class of ‘85

WHAT’S GOING ON

CITY VIBE

School reunions are always a ton of fun, but when you are looking for people that graduated 30 years ago, it can be a daunting task.

The search is on for students who went to either St Edmunds or St Mary’s Colleges from the year 1985, along with anyone who left in Year 10 in 1983. Photo: Organiser of the 30th Reunion Kate Ellovee with St Edmund’s College Principal Chris Leadbetter want to hear from students from 1985 school year.

Organiser of the 30th Reunion Kate Ellovee who now lives on the Sunshine Coast is trying to track people down, and is doing it because she herself was tracked down for the 20th Year Reunion by some dedicated classmates. “I was living in Sydney at the time, had changed my name and wasn’t at all interested in coming back to Ipswich,” reunion organiser Kate said. “The 20th Reunion organisers found me only two weeks before the event by asking the girls from St.Mary’s to find me. One girl rang my Mum and talked so long that the answering machine ran out of tape (Note: yes kids, answering machines weren’t always digital), so she couldn’t leave her phone number. “My mother then knew that Daniel Jones was organising the reunion and, upon seeing his mother at church, gave her my mobile number. She passed the number on to him and when he called I said “No thanks” to which he replied with a campaign by a group of the boys to change my mind. “I was bombarded with calls from them! The organisers, did everything they possibly could to get me there and I flew up at the last moment. “This resulted in my vow to ‘pay it forward’ in gratitude as I ended up having the best night ever!” The theme of the event is ‘Be Around 2015 to ’Set Fire To This Town’ in response to the lyrics of “Flame Trees” by Cold Chisel written by Don

Walker about returning to his hometown of Grafton. “Just like Ipswich, Grafton turns a shade of violet in October when the Jacaranda trees are in bloom, however the metaphor of the Flame Tree’s red flowers being a blinding light to the weary driver worked better,” Kate said. “I wanted to inspire my classmates to return to Ipswich and light this place up with their presence. It will be brilliant to see familiar faces in old places having fun and telling their stories. “The 30th Reunion has been designed to suit many different lifestyles and begins at 3pm with an afternoon tea followed by a tour of the schools then a slideshow of photos. The 6pm mass at St Mary’s Church will welcome the Class of ’85 who will have the rest of the evening to enjoy catching up over dinner and drinks in a central city venue. “We need to find people so this is a way to encourage the search for old friends and the song holds a beautiful lyrical image of such an experience happening,” Kate said. If you know anyone, or may know someone who went to either school in the years 1983 or 1985, let Kate know via email at: be.around2015@gmail.com or contact the Ipswich Life Office and we’ll pass on the details.

BEST LINE OF

DEFENCE

Fighter Aces in combat over ‘Top End’ There’s an intense air war going on in the skies over the Northern Territory, as fighter pilots train as they would fight, testing their air combat skills against notional threats – in the air and on the ground. Exercise Aces North involves more than 50 aircraft supported by about 750 personnel, operating from RAAF Bases at Darwin and from Tindal near Katherine. Aces North is the culminating phase of the Fighter Combat Instructor (FCI) Course, which provides experienced F/A-18 A/B Classic Hornet, F/A-18F Super Hornet pilots and Weapon System Officers (WSOs) with five months of highly specialised training in all air combat related roles. The exercise requires these aircrews to engage in advanced fighter combat tactics and scenarios played out during the three-week exercise. Aircrews to put training into practice under simulated but realistic combat conditions. . Exercise Commander, Group Captain Rob Chipman said the aim of the FCI course is to take the RAAF’s most talented pilots and WSOs, controllers and intelligence officers, and put them through a rigorous six months of training to ensure that they have the skills that they need to lead in combat. FCIs are destined to become the combat leaders and tacticians of the Air Force. “The missions will vary, from pure air-to-air missions to strike missions delivering ordnance onto Delamere Air Weapons Range and Bradshaw

Weapons Ranges,” he said. “We come here because we have the best open airspace and air weapons range infrastructure available in Australia.” Mission profiles include F/A-18A Classic and F/A-18F Super Hornets simulating complex air strikes deep into enemy territory. A typical mission package involves a large formation of 12 or more aircraft taking off from RAAF Base Darwin and flying down to do a simulated strike, delivering live bombs on the Delamere Air Weapons Range south of RAAF Base Tindal. Aiming to spoil the success of the strike, other F/A-18 Hornets based in Tindal engage the strikers in the role of adversary, or ‘Red Air’. The attackers have to fight their way through the defenders to get to the target and drop their bombs, then fight their way back out. The fighter jets are being supported by a range of aircraft including the E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Electronic & Surveillance aircraft and KC-30 air refuellers. The exercise concludes June 25. Clockwise: Super Hornet aircrew carry out pre-flight checks. F/A-18F aircrew walk for a strike sortie. LAC Matthew Stannard inspects the F/A-18F control surfaces as part of preflight checks. *It turns out The Spice Girls almost weren’t called The Spice Girls… The original name for the band was The Spicy Girls but after doing their research they found out it was a porn site. Then Victoria Beckham explained how they got their nicknames: “Posh was given to us by a British teen magazine, but we were already acting like our names, Mel B really did dress scary, always in leopard print. Emma really was Baby; she always wore pigtails and those bloody awful platform shoes! But I’m still very close to all of those girls.” *Sideshow Bob will be one happy man. Bart Simpson will die in the next season of The Simpsons. But no spoiler alert needed — because he comes back to life again in the next episode. His death is in one of the Treehouse of Horror halloween episodes. Producer Al Jean said: “I’m one of the people that always wanted to see the Coyote eat the Roadrunner. I hated frustration comedy, so we’ll scratch that itch.” *Any guesses as to the highest selling artist of 2014? Taylor Swift of course — According to the British Phonographic Industry. Her latest album 1989 has already sold 6 million copies despite being released in October. Rounding out the top 5 are One Direction, Ed Sheeran, Coldplay and ACDC. Speaking of Tay Tay — Remember how her song Bad Blood was rumoured to be about Katy Perry poaching some of her back up dancers? Well Katy Perry has just registered a new song title 1984 with her record publisher. Can’t wait to hear the new song! *Could there be a Sister Act reboot or sequel on the cards? The original 1992 box office smash saw Whoopi Goldberg’s character go into hiding in a convent after witnessing a mob crime. Now the writers of this year’s live action Cinderella remake are rumoured to be signed on for Sister Act 3 (or a complete reboot). Fingers crossed Sister Mary Clarence makes a comeback! *Samuel L Jackson has confirmed he won’t be returning for the third Captain America movie Civil War. Which is surprising because he has a pivitol role in Winter’s Soldier. Jackson said:

“I’m not in Captain America 3. I can’t figure that out, but I’m not,” he said. “I guess I’m still out there, trying to figure out what happened to S.H.I.E.L.D. and who these other people are.” Although Jackson is out, there’s plenty of other big names in. So far the cast includes Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Anthony Mackie, Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Frank Grillo, Chadwick Boseman, Jeremy Renner, William Hurt, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Rudd, Martin Freeman and Don Cheadle. Til next time… Louise Listen to Louise daily from 9am-Noon on 97.3FM

DEFENCE Pay increase for ADF personnel The independent Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal (DFRT) has approved the Government’s proposal to increase the pay of Australian Defence Force personnel. The Government’s proposal will result in ADF members receiving a pay increase of 2 per cent each year, up from 1.5 per cent, for the remaining life of the 2014 Workplace Remuneration Arrangement (WRA). The determination will take effect from 12 March 2015 and ensures ADF pay remains above the current annual inflation rate of 1.3 per cent. The Assistant Minister for Defence, Stuart Robert, said the Government had listened to the concerns of the Defence community, the veterans’ community and the wider Australian community and acted to seek an increase to the pay of ADF personnel. “This latest pay increase acknowledges the Government’s high regard for the unique nature of military service and the demands that are placed on ADF personnel and their families,” Mr Robert said. “The decision provides certainty to ADF personnel and their families while also recognising the significant contribution ADF members make to our nation’s security.”

Talking Beer WITH TIM AT THE PA HOTEL

BLAME IT ON THE SUNSHINE. BLAME IT ON THE MOONLIGHT. BLAME IT ON THE GOOD TIME. BUT DON’T BLAME IT ON THE BOOGIE, OH NO NO NO. ‘COS WITHOUT THE BOOGIE YOU AIN’T GOT THE SASS IN THIS BOTTLE, YO! Those are some fine words from the team at Moon Dog Brewing Co. What are they talking about? They’re taking about one of their fantastic beer creations – Moon Dog Bjorn to Boogie Watermelon Weizen. As the title alludes, this is a wheat beer brewed with watermelon. Watermelon is a funny ingredient in beer; unlike other fruits it actually dilutes beer – in other words, there is more water in watermelon than sugar. So whatever watermelon is added needs to be tempered with malt and water; like all adjuncts, of course, just in the opposite direction to the norm with watermelon. It pours a hazy yellow colour with a big thick head of white foam. It’s everything you’d expect a witbier to look like. The nose

is quite impressive as well and only has a slight hint of watermelon to indicate that it is anything other than a normal Hefeweizen. There’s plenty of banana and wheat as well as a hint of mint and bubblegum. Now the taste is where the watermelon really comes into it’s own. As the beer first touches your lips you get a hint of sweet watermelon, before the banana flavour of your typical Hefeweizen kicks in. Again there is a hint of minty/bubblegum flavour before some lime and another stronger watermelon flavour hits. This is one of the most sessionable beers around, if you like Hefeweizens and/or watermelon; BUY THIS BEER! BUY IT NOW! Cheers, Tim Moon Dog Bjorn to Boogie Watermelon Weizen is available now at Harry Brown Liquor Store Booval and Char’d Steakhouse both located at the Prince Alfred Hotel. Hurry, limited stocks available! Ipswich Life 19

MONEY

MATTERS Make the most of it BY MARK BOURIS

I’ve been fielding questions lately about interest rates and the economy. Such as: With interest rates of 2 per cent being the lowest they’ve been for several generations, why is the economy not growing quicker? Why is government revenue not keeping up with spending? Why is unemployment still over 6 per cent? The monetary policy — using interest rates to control economic activity — is not stimulating the economy as expected. Low interest rates have triggered investors to buy established houses and apartments, but there’s been less stimulation in the first-home buyer, or home-building sectors, or in markets outside metropolitan Sydney and Melbourne. Low interest rates are supposed to make us borrow and spend. But the Reserve Bank said in its March Financial Stability Statement that our household saving rate is higher now than at any time in the decade prior to the GFC. We’re holding on to our dough — not spending it. In the Budget the government encouraged spending by allowing owners to claim an instant tax deduction on business items up to $20,000 — a huge increase on the usual $1000.

So Canberra wants business owners to drive economic growth. This week we’ll have another interest rate decision but it won’t matter if it drops to 1.75 per cent, or stays the same. You see, we’re at 2 per cent already which is the lowest cash rate most Australians have seen in their lifetimes. The last time it was this low was before I was born. Amongst all the financial data, Australia’s official cash rate is the number that really matters: 2 per cent means the economy is in trouble. Unfortunately for the government, Australians are not dummies — they know what to do with low interest rates. People with home loans are using the low interest rates to get ahead on their repayment schedules and on average are now two years ahead. And when Australians are not paying-down debt, they’re using low interest rates to fund investment properties that yield better than the 3 per cent yields on cash. Owner-occupied home loans grew only 5.8 per cent in the year to March, while investment property loans grew by 10.4 per cent. Of course, all these responses — the savings, the accelerated mortgage repayments, the refinancing and the investment loans – rely on employment. We’re above 6 per cent unemployment right now — not as bad as the late 1980s when it was over 10 per cent, and not as good as 2007 when it got down to 4 per cent. The best strategy for most Australians is to hang onto their jobs and use cheap debt to do exactly what they’re doing: pay off their home loan and other debts; find the best deal, and fund an investment. Problems sleeping? While the mattress is the heart of your bedroom, other environmental elements such as lighting, colour and accessories, play an important role in the total sleep experience. Your bedroom should be an oasis — a soothing space conducive to relaxation and indulgent comfort. And creating a sleep sanctuary doesn’t have to be difficult or costly. Regardless of space or budget you can transform your bedroom into a haven of comfort. Here are some tips for maintaining a healthy sleep cycle and ensuring the best night’s rest. 1. Maintain a regular bed and wake time schedule, including weekends. 2. Establish a relaxing bedtime routine, such as soaking in a hot bath or hot tub and then reading a book or listening to soothing music. 3. Create a sleep-conducive environment that is dark, quiet, comfortable and cool. 4. Sleep on a comfortable mattress and pillow. 5. Use your bedroom only for sleep. It is best to take work materials, computers and televisions out of the sleeping environment. 6. Finish eating at least two to three hours before your regular bedtime. 7. Exercise regularly. It’s ideal to complete your workout a few hours before bedtime.
