Ipswich a moviemaker’s dream Moviegoers will be able to glimpse more scenes from Ipswich in 2014 with a number of productions currently being shot in the region. This follows reports that Dwayne ‘The Rock” Johnson will be filming scenes from his new movie ‘San Andreas 3D’ in the Ipswich area in April. The movie, set for a release in 2015, is being filmed mainly at the Village Roadshow Studios in Oxenford, on the Gold Coast, but several scenes will be filmed in ipswich, and hopefully the ‘world’s biggest star’ will enjoy his time in our city. 2013 was the year that Johnson was confirmed as the biggest movie star of the year with his movies taking in more money last year than any other actor. Australian movies ‘Rise’ and ‘Charlie’ are two movies that are being filmed in Ipswich. Ipswich City Council Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said two different productions were currently being shot locally. “The Australian feature film Rise is being shot around Ipswich while Charlie is being filmed at Tallegalla and in the Tallegalla Cemetery.” Rise (originally known as Rise of the Underdog) is an Australian feature film based on a true story of a young man’s imprisonment due to a false allegation and his fight to prove his innocence. A wayward night leads to young nurse Will

being falsely accused of drink spiking & rape. He is stripped of his career and his freedom and locked up in a maximum security jail after being found guilty at trial and sentenced to six years imprisonment. He is left without friends, family and career. Rise centres on the unlikely friendship Will has formed with Jimmy, a hardened armed robber and the legal battle by a prominent lawyer Julie, who must compromise status and her wage to prove his innocence. Directed and written by Mack Lindon, Rise’s cast is led by award-winning Australian actor Martin Sacks and also features Nathan Wilson, Rosie Keogh, Marty Rhone, David Cuthbertson, Erin Conner, Jamie Joseph and Vincent Gorce. Cr Pahlke said the movie Charlie revolved around the story of a young girl in a rural area being raised by an elderly man. The production company behind the movie Spill Films has just finished shooting the trailer for the movie. “This trailer will now be used as a marketing tool to assist with obtaining funding to develop the feature length film.” Cr Pahlke said Ipswich was becoming a mecca for the filming of all types of films and advertisements.

“Our location and attributes make the city an ideal location as a backdrop for filming all kinds of things ranging from films to commercials and video clips. Some examples of projects previously filmed in the region include: Inspector Gadget 2, Through My Eyes: The Lindy Chamberlain Story, Savages Crossing, The Fat

Cow Motel series, 500 Miles, Mystery Road, and The Railway Man, along with a variety of commercials including Fourex, Breaker milk, Road Safety and Golden Casket. Above: Actors Andy Sparnon (playing Benji), Jackson O’Sullivan (playing Sam), Martin Sacks (playing Jimmy Cove) and the film’s lead Nathan Wilson (playing William McIntyre).

Is this The Commando’s toughest challenge ever? It’s January, and right across the country there are people who are on treadmills, in pools, on bikes and at gyms, fighting to keep their New Year Resolutions “to get fit in 2014”. So it’s no surprise that the time is right for a new series of ‘The Biggest Loser’. Returning again is Steve Willis, also known as ‘The Commando’, and this time the challenge put to the trainers of Steve, Shannan Ponton and Michelle Bridges, is to transform an entire town. Seriously. Can it be done? Situated in Northern Victoria, Ararat is known by health experts as one of the most obese towns in the nation, and is the focus of this new series. “I don’t know the finer details of it all, but essentially Ararat has a population of about 11,000 and is known as one of the fattest towns in the nation,” Steve told Ipswich Life. “The production team really thought it was the perfect town for the show and for the idea of turning around an entire town. “We travelled in from train via Melbourne, and essentially it’s the same Biggest Loser, but this time we had to engage a whole town, get them behind us, and along the way we selected ‘Town Champions’. These people are the ones who will go to the Biggest Loser house, and their job is to lose weight, and at the same time raise money for Ararat. It is a fantastic concept.” In the past, Steve has had to contend with families, couples, and individuals who he has had to work hard with to lose the weight, but even he was lost for words when told about the idea for the 2014 series. “I remember our initial response when they presented us with the idea was simply ‘Are you serious?’ But when we got there, the response from the town was overwhelming. “They all knew that the rest of Victoria referred to the place as ‘Fatarat’, or ‘Arafat’...and they weren’t happy about it. “Like anyone who takes pride in where they live, they didn’t want their town known for that. When the Biggest Loser came to town they were ready to make change, and you can see in the first show the massive numbers of people who got involved. “We all felt that this was the next step after the ‘next generation’ series, where we broke the chain for parents and their kids. Ararat wanted to kick start the whole of Australia, and show that they can do it, so they can show the rest of the country what’s possible.” As a trainer, one of the most recognised in the country, it must be hard to see Australia remain in the top 5 ‘fattest on earth’ countries year after year. “It’s frustrating seeing us as a nation get fatter. It’s the space we live in nowadays, and we as trainers have to keep doing what we’re doing. You can’t save everybody…at the end of the day you’d like to, but I have to just keep doing my best and keep going. “This is my 8th season on the show, and I’m often asked what keeps me coming back. Essentially I’m in the business of helping people change their lives. This show gives me the vehicle to reach into people’s homes, and spread the word. Honestly, I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.” 2 IPSWICHLIFE

Steve was in Ipswich last year for the first Spartan Race at Peak Crossing, which attracted over 10,000 people from all over the country. It was so successful there is another one coming in March. Does Steve have a theory as to the sudded popularity of all these ‘Extreme’ events? “Yes, I was in Ipswich for Spartan Race last year. It’s funny you say that so many people do these things now, I was just talking to a friend who was with an Aboriginal man, and he said that us white fellas live in our heads too much. I thought about that and he’s right, we spend all our time working, commuting, and its so much time in our heads I think it’s the reason we look for an outlet like Spartan Race, or Tough Mudder or the huge growth in Crossfit going on right now…there’s elements of getting yourself switched on to take on those obstacles. I think that’s a lot of the appeal.” Compare the ‘Commando’ character to when he started on the show, and he has changed. In the beginning, he was a tough, scary trainer who made people cry. Now, contestants go on the show hoping to get Commando as their coach. Why the change?

“I guess I have changed now you mention it. I guess I’m more compassionate now. When I started on the show I had just left the forces, and I’ve been a civilian for a decade now, which has helped me to bring my ‘going out of comfort zones’ into the training. People aren’t robots. They are human beings. “My aim for this season of Biggest Loser is that if we can transform a town, the fattest town in Australia, then anyone out there can do it. If we can change a town, we can change a nation.” The Biggest Loser Season 9: Challenge Australia begins this weekend on TEN.

Reader FAQs for Commando We asked IpswichLife readers to email in some questions for Commando on our Facebook page, and this is what he had to say. Keep watching our Facebook page for more upcoming interviews. Kelly D. asked: ‘Are the trainers on the show competitive with each other?’ We all want to see our contestants there at the end, its like an unspoken rule, we are all competitive at the end of the day. We just want them to do the training, eat the right food, and if they just keep doing that there is no reason that they can’t be there at the end. Melissa A: ‘Who was the toughest contestant you’ve had on the show?’ I think of two automatically, and they were JJ and Sarah Moon. In the end Sarah got it, but she took a long time to get there. As for JJ… each day I would walk away laughing my head off. He was a tough nut to crack. Carmen S: ‘Were you ever the last kid picked at school?’ I think I was to be honest. I remember standing there thinking are they ever going to pick me, half the picks were gone and I’m still standing here? PICK ME! Matt H: What is your ‘Fran’ time? (‘Fran’ is a famous workout used to test your fitness, consisting of using a 45kg barbell and a pull up bar. Give it a go: 21 Thrusters, 21 Pullups. Then 15/15, then 9/9. Record your time.) I haven’t done it for a long time, but I think it’s about 2 minutes and 32 seconds. Michael K: ‘What motivates you every day?’ I ponder on this a lot. The physical aspect of life has always been part of what I do. It’s why I played sport, joined the forces, took up Crossfit training and so on. Just being around other people and helping them transform their lives, it inspires me to be the best version of myself . It’s also about leading by example, something that I strongly believe in. Paige: ‘Was there ever a contestant that looked amazing and you thought ‘I didn’t see that coming’? Quite often I’ve seen people who have been eliminated, go home, then find thier way back in. I find that the most amazing thing. That’s twice as hard, being out of the house, compared to the people who are in the house, training with myself, Michelle or Shannan, and living in that controlled environment. They are the ones who blow me away. Karen C: ‘How do you encourage a kid who can’t throw, can’t catch but doesn’t give up?’ You just answered your own question. Never give up. There are people who have great talent and blow it. There are others who have no talent at all but never give up. Look at Michael Jordan… he never got picked for anything when he was younger. But did he give up?

Goodna Creek Bikeway open The newly installed shared pathway, which is part of the Goodna Creek Bikeway, provides better local connectivity for pedestrians and cyclist alike, linking into existing pedestrian facilities which extend to Redbank Railway Station and beyond. Ipswich City Council City Councillor Cheryl Bromage said the new route was available following the completion of stage two works on the Goodna Creek Bikeway project. Cr Bromage said the $800,000 project had been jointly funded by council and the State Government and constructed by Scape Shapes Landscaping Pty Ltd. “We thank the State Government for partnering with us on this important local transport project,” she said. “This greater connectivity has been achieved through the construction of a path crossing over Goodna Creek within the Goss Drive Road Reserve.” Division 3 Councillor and Deputy Mayor Victor Attwood said the latest stage of works had included the construction of bikeway sections including pathway lighting, street furniture, drainage works and landscaping over two sites. “The first involved the upgrading of the intersection of Namatjira Drive and Duncan St

to provide safe bicycle and pedestrian roadcrossing facilities,” Cr Attwood said. “The second site travels through Peter Beattie Park Reserve, Deborah Drive Park Reserve and Goss Drive unformed road reserve providing a link between Lawrie Drive, Goss Drive, Watson St, Deborah Drive Collingwood Park and Henderson St at Redbank. “The local community are thrilled to access this new bikeway link. “This connection gives them an off-road cycling facility through the area.” Below: Councillor Cheryl Bromage and Deputy Mayor Victor Attwood inspect the new stage of the Goodna Creek Bikeway with Collingwood Park youngsters Simeon Anstey, 4; Micaela Anstey, 8,; Leah Anstey, 6, and their father Pastor Matt Anstey.

BLAIR

WITH SHAYNE NEUMANN MP, FEDERAL MEMBER FOR BLAIR

Excited about 2014 Few of us begin a new year without some reflection on the past year and with some goals in mind for the coming year. January last year saw Ipswich and the Somerset inundated with flooding for the second time in as many years and I know that many are still recovering from the devastation. This year we’ve already experienced a heat wave with temperatures climbing to the mid -forties. Whatever we say about South East Queensland summers, they’re rarely boring! As your Federal Member, I’m excited about seeing some of the projects I’ve fought for come to fruition in 2014. The Blacksoil Interchange is due for completion this year. The upgrade to this notoriously dangerous intersection of the Brisbane Valley Highway and the Warrego Highway has been a long time coming and I am very happy that the upgrade has gone so well to date and is close to completion. Another project we can expect to see completed this year is the Toogoolawah Condensery Arts and Cultural Precinct. The former Federal Labor Government provided $500,000 through the Regional

Development Program to the Somerset Council to convert the old condensery factory in Toogoolawah into an arts and cultural precinct. I will continue to hold regular mobile offices across Ipswich and the Somerset throughout the year. These mobile offices are an important part of being your Federal Member and I encourage you to come along to have a chat with me next time I’m in your neighbourhood. Don’t forget that Round 3 of the Local Sporting Champions grants are open and close on 28 February. For more information and application forms please call my electorate office on 3201 5300. Happy New Year! Warm regards, Shayne Neumann Member for Blair

The annual Hills Australian Junior Golf Championship was held last week, with the aim of developing tomorrow’s champions. This is the second year that Brookwater has hosted the event. Hills Golf Academy Director of Golf Tom Berndt said the tournament enabled junior golfers to compare their golfing standard with that of professional and amateur golfers who completed in last year’s Queensland Open Golf Championship also held at Brookwater. “The calibre of golfers is higher this year, and with the course ‘showing its teeth’ in windy conditions it’s a real test of their skills over three days of competition,” he said. “This is one of a series of events that Hills conducts annually. Last year, we held events in China, Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Australia – and this year we are adding events in Singapore, Vietnam and Malaysia. “The event is also timed well, as it leads in to the Australian Amateur Championships at the Grange Golf Club in South Australia. Club General Manager Warren Seeto said Brookwater was honoured to host this second championship of the Hills Asia Pacific Junior

Golf Series as it provides the opportunity to support the development of up and coming golfers. “We were pleased to host the inaugural event last year, as Brookwater is a proud supporter of junior golf development, and this year’s event has proven to be even better,” Mr Seeto said. “The series enables junior golfers, including Brookwater’s own players, to test their skills against their peers in Australia and internationally.” Top: Members of the Japanese team: Toshiyuki Tsujr (coach), Tomoki Nakumura, Naoki Sekito and Yuji Sekito. Enjoy Queens Park over the holidays Ipswich City Council is reminding residents to make the most of the school holidays, and head to Queens Park to discover why so many visitors love being in Queensland’s oldest park. Located close to the Ipswich city centre, Queens Park is full of shady gardens, plenty of open space, facilitates and attractions to keep the whole family busy. Councillor David Morrison said Queens Park was the perfect place to bring the family to get back to nature and enjoy hours of free fun. “As well as children’s play facilities, garden beds, barbecue facilities and walking paths, Queens Park is home to the Ipswich Nature Centre, Environmental Education Centre and the Japanese Nerima Gardens,” he said. “The Nature Centre has Australian wildlife, from wallabies to birds and cute bilbies, as well as beautifully landscaped gardens. Entry is free but gold coin donation is appreciated to help care for the animals.” Cr Morrison said around the corner from the Nature Centre is the Japanese Nerima Gardens which is a place of peace and

tranquillity and attracts many visitors. “The gardens were designed with the help of our friends from our sister city Nerima in Japan and are a great place to relax or get some nice photos.” The Environmental Education Centre is used for pre-planned activities and conferences but also features information about council’s environmental initiative for residents. “Queens Park also has the Lions Lookout, bush chapel, bush house and several sporting grounds,” Cr Morrison said. “The Bowls Club, Tennis Centre and Croquet Club are located in Queens Park too if you are looking for ideas on what else to do around town, the Ipswich Visitor Information Centre is located at the Queen Victoria Parade end of Queens Park.” Queens Park is located off Milford St, Ipswich.

‘Built for Speed’ in Springfield Free school holiday fun at Springfield will move up a gear with the Ipswich Art Gallery’s ‘Built for Speed’ exhibition on now until January 17 at Orion Town Centre in Springfield. Arts and Community Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said Built for Speed was a hands-on activity where children used LEGO blocks to design, build and race their own cars. “What do you get when you combine kids, LEGO cars and racing ramps? A whole lot of fun and the perfect boredom buster these school holidays,” Cr Pisasale said. “Children have the opportunity to build their dream car and test their design by racing their creation along ramps and tracks. “There will be thrills, spills and crashes as kids embrace the challenge of creating the fastest, toughest, best looking car which can outlast the rest.” Division 1 Councillor David Morrison said this was the second year in a row the Ipswich Art Gallery had taken its creative children’s programming to Springfield Central. “Built for Speed at Orion is a great way for local families to see what a Gallery experience is all about and has been made possible thanks to the partnership between shopping centre owners Mirvac and the Ipswich Arts Foundation,” Cr Morrison said. “Nearly 6000 people enjoyed Construction Site at Orion Town Centre last January and I have no doubt we’ll be seeing lots of people trackside this year for Built for Speed.” Build for Speed opens at Orion Town Centre from 9am-3pm daily (7pm on Thursdays) until

Welcoming

January 17. The activity is recommended for children aged four years and over due to the exhibition containing small parts and children must be supervised by a parent at all times. Bookings are not required and entry is free. Orion Town Centre is located on 1 Main St, Springfield Central. by DARREN HALLESY

Have we lost the meaning of it all? I have to admit I”m one of those people who tuts and shakes their head when I see Hot Cross Buns go on sale on Jan 1 each year. I’ve heard some even were on sale on December 28, but that would just be silly wouldn’t it? Having time off over the holidays allows me to trawl the net and see how the true meaning of the holiday season is being lost. A few years ago, I read an article about how in Sydney a local council chose not to dress the town up in decorations as they didn’t want to “offend” anyone. Then I saw that in the US, Christmas trees are now called “Holiday Trees”, because they don’t want to “offend” anyone. In Australia this year, media seems to have adopted the term the Americans use which is “Happy Holidays”, probably because they… oh you get my point. Just who are all these people out there who are “offended” by Christmas decorations? Whatever happened to the term ‘live and let live’? As a nation, we need to have a good look at what we stand for. We are an accepting nation, inviting people from all corners of the globe to bring their culture, share in our 6 IPSWICHLIFE

way of life and enjoy the ‘Aussie’ way. Yet in doing that, its like the majority of us have to feel embarrassed or apologise for celebrating things like Christmas or Easter. Why? We’ve always done it. I’m sure that if anybody bothered to speak to people of other religions or beliefs, their attitude would be ‘do what you like, it doesn’t worry me.’ I know I’m sounding like a bit of a whinger here, but I think my point is valid. Christmas is in essence a celebration of the birth of Christ, and no matter what you believe, you must admit that Christmas is now all about presents that most of us really can’t afford. What are we celebrating at Christmas… the power of the Mastercard or humanity, fun and family? What makes people turn into these rabid animals waving credit cards on Boxing Day...a day of rest. I suppose its understandable really, stores are ONLY open 363 days a year. *slaps head* With Easter Eggs already on sale, how long before someone comes up with ‘The Good Friday Shopping Frenzy’? BACK TO SCHOOL Start the school year with clear vision Children rarely complain about their sight, but often show in their behaviour that there may be a problem with their vision. Having your child’s eyesight tested before the start of the new school year can have a profound impact on their overall school experience. An eye test with an optometrist every two years can detect early visual problems that can hinder school work. Some of the signs to look out for are rubbing eyes a lot, squinting at a blackboard or computer, trouble reading and distinguishing

between letters or shapes on a page, and holding things close to the nose to view. These are some common indicators that would indicate having a comprehensive eye test to evaluate the need for corrective spectacles. At the Optical Superstore in the Ipswich Mall, we cater for children from pre-school to Uni. With our optometrist on hand to answer questions, isn’t it time to book an eye test? Eye testing is bulk billed with Medicare, and testing is available Weekdays and Saturday mornings. To book call 3812 9511.

Understanding kids footwear Children’s feet are highly vulnerable to injury as they continue development into their late teenage years, so it is important to be able to recognise a few more common lower limb aches and pains that can affect your child. Flat Feet Flexible flatfoot or a pronated foot is a condition usually caused by loose ligaments within the feet. Flat feet can cause aching feet or legs, especially during and/or after exercise. Other problems that can arise include poor balance’ poor coordination, tripping over’, bunions, heel and knee pain. Treatment with foot orthotics may be indicated if symptoms are occurring or if the flat foot is severe. Heel Pain/Severs Disease Severs disease is an injury to the growth plate of the heel bone where the Achilles tendon attaches, commonly affecting active children 10 to 14 years of age. What to look for? Your child may experience pain at the back of the heel bone. This is worse with exercise. Initially, it is best to reduce sports/activity & ice the painful area. Also check the fit of your child’s footwear. If pain persists, it is recommended to seek opinion with a Podiatrist. Knee Pain/Osgood Schlatters Osgood-Schlatters causes pain, tenderness and swelling just below the knee, and down the shin (tibia). It is more common in boys, overweight children and from overzealous activities such as running and jumping. The condition will usually present with

tenderness and swelling just below the knee. Frequent Ankle Sprains An ankle sprain occurs when there is a sudden twisting motion at the ankle during weight loading. This can overstretch or even break the ligaments resulting in pain, swelling, bruising and the inability to weight bear. If your child sprains or twists their ankle frequently, a Podiatrist is able to manage this through exercises and the use of orthoses. Growing Pains Growing pains are harmless muscle pain which can affect children from 3 years of age right through to adolescence. They often occur of an evening and affect either the calf muscles, thigh muscles or behind the knee. There are numerous causes including muscle tiredness and poor postural control. Growing pains can be infrequent and can be brought on by increased activity during the day. The pain is always gone by the morning. Growing pains do not affect the way a child walks or runs although lower limb biomechanics can be an attributing factor to the problem. Head out on the highway this summer, but with safety in mind with Bremer TAFE

While some of us have now returned to work many others are still making the most of the summer holidays and heading off on day trips and longer drives. While impromptu road-trips are common this time of year, being too spontaneous could make your trip memorable for all the wrong reasons. However, by following some simple tips from the Automotive team at the Bremer TAFE and just a little bit of planning you’ll be able to make it “there and back again” safely and without the need for any unplanned overnight stays due to a breakdown. Tips for an uninterrupted Summer road trip: 1. Sounds really simple, but if you’re overdue for a car service, get it done. Being stranded in the heat, with screaming kids, or having to ‘holiday’ overnight at a less than desirable motel while you’re waiting for your car to be fixed, is not wanted on anyone’s itinerary. 2. Likewise, check your oil, check your tyres - all that ‘boring safety stuff’ your Dad told you to do when you were young - it’s invaluable for a smooth road-trip. 3. Wipe the bugs out of your eyes check your wiper blades are working, and ready to give you the best view!

Back to School!

4. Do some research before you leave re: major roadworks and road closures, bad weather conditions and delays due to major events like sporting matches etc. can eat into your time, your petrol, and of course your patience. Plan your trip properly. 5. Pack a phone charger, lots of water and towels — what makes leaving the beach even sadder is burning legs from hot seats! For more information about Bremer’s automotive courses please call 3817 3000.

Competition runs from 9am 6 January to 2pm Friday 24 January 2014. Winners will be drawn at 2.30pm 24 January 2014 and will be contacted by phone or email. Each of the 6 winners will receive a $500 Riverlink Gift Card. For more terms & conditions visit www.riverlink.net.au or see in-centre.

Getting over the festive season As we look back and reflect on another enjoyable festive season, it is time to start getting our lives back to some sort of normality. One of the biggest challenges is getting our body clock back ready for the working world. The team at Beds R Us not only recognise the importance a quality mattress has on a good night sleep, but we also have a few helpful tips to make sure you get out of bed with a spring in the step. Sleep Tips 1. Set your alarm later. How many times do you hit the snooze button on your alarm in the morning? Many people set their alarm for half an hour before they really intend to get up. Set the alarm for when you need to get up rather than when you should get up and benefit from the extra zzzzzs 2. Cool off your love affair with the TV, the arch enemy of sleep. Late night TV programs not only keep you out of bed, they can actually keep you awake. If there is a late night program you really want to see, it’s worth taking two minutes to set the video or hard drive so you can record it and watch it at a decent hour.

3. Keep the lights low. Exposure to bright light, especially early in the day, is a natural way to wake up your body - the brightness acts like a wake-up call to remind your body that it’s day-time. But at night time, you should keep the lights low, especially in your bedroom, to give your brain the message that it’s night, and time to sleep. 4. Have dinner earlier. No one likes going to bed just after they’ve eaten, but these days many people are not eating until after 8pm — which tends to result in a later bed time. Try to have dinner a little earlier, so it’s natural to turn in. 5. Go out earlier. If you’re going out to the movies or dinner or even just playing cards with your neighbours, opt for an earlier start time. If a great night sleep is on your wish list for 2014, be sure to call in and see your local team at Ipswich Furniture Court and Beds R Us

Anna Gare’s Pear & Rhubarb Crumble Anna Gare has shared some recipes for Ipswich Life readers, so here’s a crumble to stop the tummy rumble! As Anna explains: My friend Tansy inspired this recipe. She is an excellent home cook and the only dessert she ever makes is rhubarb crumble. There’s something homely and humble about a sweet and tart crumble. CRUMBLE FILLING • 50 g (13/4 oz) unsalted butter • 165 g (53/4 oz/3/4 cup) caster (superfine) sugar • 600 g (1 lb 5 oz) trimmed rhubarb • (about 2 bunches), washed and cut into 3 cm (11/4 inch) pieces (see Note) • 6 pears, peeled, cored and cut into 6 wedges each (see Note) • pinch of ground cinnamon • 1/2 a vanilla bean, halved lengthways, seeds scraped • 185 ml (6 fl oz/3/4 cup) white wine (or verjuice for a non-alcoholic version) • vanilla-bean ice cream, to serve CRUMBLE TOPPING 150 g (51/2 oz) cold unsalted butter, finely diced 110 g (33/4 oz/1/2 cup) caster (superfine) sugar 150 g (51/2 oz/1 cup) plain (all-purpose) flour 100 g (31/2 oz/1 cup) almond meal (ground almonds) 30 g (1 oz) flaked almonds

Add the wine and cook for 5 minutes, or until the fruit is half cooked. Pour into a 30 x 20 cm (12 x 8 inch), 2.5 litre (87 fl oz/10 cup) capacity baking dish. TO MAKE THE CRUMBLE TOPPING Rub the butter, sugar and flour together in a bowl with your fingertips until the mixture resembles a crumble consistency. Stir in the almond meal and flaked almonds until combined. TO ASSEMBLE AND COOK THE CRUMBLE Sprinkle the crumble over the fruit mixture. Bake for 30 minutes, or until the crumble is golden on top. Serve hot with a scoop of good-quality vanilla-bean ice cream. NOTE You can use whatever fruit is in season for this. Softer fruit needs less pre-cooking time and requires less wine as it will not reduce as much. Recipes and images from ‘Eat In’ by Anna Gare, published by Murdoch Books, RRP $39.99

METHOD Preheat the oven to 180¡C (350¡F/Gas 4).

LOOKINGBACK With Brian Randall

TO MAKE THE CRUMBLE FILLING Heat the butter and sugar in a wide heavybased saucepan over medium heat until melted and the mixture just starts to bubble together and caramelise. Add the fruit, cinnamon and vanilla bean and seeds to the saucepan, stir to combine and cook over low heat for a few minutes.

St Francis Xavier Church: Goodna St Francis Xavier Catholic Church at Goodna, was opened in May 1881, originally being called St. Patrick’s Church. The building was designed by the well known Italian architect, Andrea Stombuco, built of local stone using local labour which was predominantly voluntary. The stone mason was William Hanley with the carpentry and painting being undertaken by James Madden of Ipswich. Various local timbers were used in the building, including cedar from Doorey’s sawmill at Mt. Mistake. During the life of the building, there have been two main phases of renovations and extensions. The first of these, in 1915, was undertaken by architects R. Coutts and Sons with the second, supervised by H. van Hoof, taking place in the early 1980s. St Francis Xavier’s became a separate parish in 1892, under parish priest Father Thomas Hayes. A school was started in 1910. Other buildings in the precinct included a timber presbytery which was eventually demolished. As with other churches, various changes to the building 10 IPSWICHLIFE

Why shop elsewhere? structure and appearance have taken place. For instance, two stained glass memorial windows are now part of the church, one in honour of local school teacher, John Carroll and the other in honour of Mr. Denis Gorman. The name of the church was changed to St. Francis Xavier during the 1920s, supposedly to avoid confusion with the many other St. Patrick churches. As a means of marking the importance of St Francis Xavier church within the Goodna community, since its construction in 1881, it has been listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. This image shows the church in 1918, prior to the name change from St. Patrick’s to the present St. Francis Xavier. If you have old photos of Ipswich, we would love to see them. Free Wi-Fi service now available in the Ipswich Mall The word is spreading on the free Wi-Fi in the Ipswich Mall, and Ipswich people are starting to take up the service as it grows in popularity. Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said having access to the internet was considered essential in the 21st century and enabled people to undertake a variety of tasks. “The internet opens up a wealth of opportunities and offering free Wi-Fi is a great initiative for our growing city,” Cr Pahlke said. “Ipswich’s libraries offer access to computers and the internet for members and since 2012, residents have also been able to access free Wi-Fi on their devices at the Ipswich Library. “This means members can access the internet, e-books, audio books and other library resources through the WiFi network during opening hours.” Cr Pahlke said earlier this year free Wi-Fi also became available in the Ipswich Mall and ICON Ipswich Tower I thanks to a new network provided by ICON Ipswich in partnership with council. “This new service will provide an initial 10mb download limit in any 24 hour period which is plenty of data for shoppers and visitors to check their

emails surf the web and catch up with friends on social media. “Access is enabled for all Wi-Fi devices, including smartphones, tablets and laptop computers.” To connect to free Wi-Fi in the Ipswich Mall, make sure the wireless settings on your device are switched on and a list of wireless internet connections will come up on your screen. Choose ‘ICP_MALL’ and you will be directed to a log in page where you will need to agree to the terms and conditions of usage. Then simply click ‘start browsing’ and enjoy.

Talking Beer WITH ANTHONY AT THE YAMANTO TAVERN

4 Pines Brewing Xmas Saison From 4 Pines brewery comes another addition to their Keller Door series. They send out twenty-four varieties of this each year and we, ‘Alehouse24’, were lucky enough to get this one onto our tap line-up. The addition to the series is a Christmas Saison, Saison being a loosely defined style of Pale Ale which was generally brewed seasonally in the colder months throughout farmhouses in Belgium. The style was brewed for the workers during the colder months due to the lack of potable water and was generally found at roughly 3 to 3.5%. Since the invention of refrigeration, the style has developed and is now more likely to be found in the higher percentages ranging from 5% to 8%. This beer is definitely in keeping with the style, with a nice spicy hit and a sweeter and solid fruity flavour. With citrus on the nose and a cloudy appearance as well as a highly carbonated finish, this beer is suited for summer months anywhere in the world. This is even more so true in Australia, where you require the flavour as well as the hydration that is delivered. The 4 Pines Christmas Saison comes in at 5.3% and is a great way to pass the time this summer at Alehouse24; so come in and enjoy with friends. Cheers, Anthony

We just keep getting better

My New Year Resolutions We asked our readers on Facebook what their New Year Resolutions are, and Rebecca E. from Blackstone responded. Congratulations Rebecca, a double movie pass is on its way! 1. Family. Make time for family starting with making more trips to Toowoomba to see my Grandfather-in-law as he is 92, not very well, and this may be the last year we have him with us. Also, we’ve made a list of family and friends we will be inviting for a catch up. 2. Spend less time stressing. This includes doing breathing exercises and exercising more, as this makes me happier naturally. 3. Eating healthier. Everyone says that I know… but there’s always room for improvement! 4. Have more fun! I’ve made a list of fun family things that we want to do and keep it beside the calendar so if we ever have a boring afternoon free or a rainy day with no plans we can turn to the list and not make excuses for bumming around the house. 5. Holiday more often! Life’s too short not to have holidays…

*Fabulous Darling! British television series Absolutely Fabulous (below) is likely to hit the big screen in the next few years as a feature film. Ab Fab writer and star Jennifer Saunders admitted on a UK talk show: “Yes, well I have to do it now because I’ve threatened to a lot.” She added that co-star Dawn French had made a STG $100,000 wager (that’s $184,297aud) that Saunder’s wouldn’t write it. Concluding: “So now I have to write it, orI have to pay her 100,000 pounds.” Ab Fab first aired in 1992.

*A leaked Katy Perry (below) backstage rider has put all our Christmas over-eating to shame. Musician’s are often renowned for their outrageous demands like Mariah Carey’s ‘box of 20 kittens’ or JLO’s ‘everything must be white’ but Katy Perry’s is surprisingly… healthy. According to TMZ, the backstage requirements for her New Year’s Gig were: –Fresh veggies AT ALL TIMES — including spinach/broccoli/celery/beets/carrots/kale, etc. -Two large baskets of fruit — one must be tropical. Dinner must include a vegetarian option … plus quinoa or couscous. -Crudites (vege sticks); Hommus; Guacamole and tortilla chips.

*Hugh Jackman is the latest name to be tossed around in Hollywood to play Playboy Founder Hugh Hefner in an upcoming Biopic. Rumours have Warner Bros in talks with Director David Dobkin (Wedding Crashers) to bring the sexy tale to the big screen. *Could tv series Downton Abbey (above) be coming to an end? Creator, Julian Fellowes, said in an interview he’s been asked to write a new US drama called The Gilded Age but won’t be working on it until Downton Abbey finishes. Fellowes has, however, confirmed a fifth season but when it came to season six: “I don’t know yet if there is a season six, but it’s not going to go on forever. It won’t be Perry Mason.” *There’s been a ton of rumours in the Beiber-sphere lately about retirement but Beiber’s manager Scooter Braun says most have been taken out of context and that the 19 year old star will only be taking ‘a year off’: “I hear him saying, ‘I’m going to take the year,’ but I’m going to force him to take the year because after three weeks he’ll want to work again. He hasn’t taken time off since he was 12. I think it’s important to find out who he wants to be.”

You can expect to catch a dose of royal fever in April – although their tour itinerary isn’t finalised yet, we hope they’ll get to our sunny state. In second place was Beyonce’s Mrs Carter world tour which grossed $US188m then Aussie-record-breaker P!NK’s Truth About Love Tour with $US170m. Rounding out the top 10 were: Justin Bieber ‘Believe’; Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band; Rihanna ‘Diamonds’; Cirque Du Soliel: Michael Jackson The Immortal World Tour; Taylor Swift ‘Red’; Depeche Mode; One Direction ‘Take Me Home’. *What a collaboration this will be! Airlift squadron flies in supplies for strife-torn Sudan 36 Squadron C-17A Globemaster transport aircraft have airlifted critical equipment and supplies into South Sudan to support the United Nations mission in a country racked with civil war. The first C-17 began its mission in Brindisi, Italy before flying to the South Sudanese capital of Juba via Djibouti on the Horn of Africa in early January. Camps have been set up around United Nations bases, with estimates of more than 20,000 people seeking refuge from the fighting. Captain of the C-17, Flight Lieutenant Luke Ridgway said the aircraft was loaded with 27 tonnes of supplies deemed as vital for the UN’s operation. “In Italy we had support from the United Nations and the local Italian military, and in conjunction with the base command and the UN we prepared the aircraft to deliver the much needed cargo,” he said. “The airport itself at Juba is very secure. We were met by Australian Defence Force and United Nations personnel.

The cargo consisted of three containers of tents, water purification and sanitation kits. UN spokesman Nicholas Von Ruben said the equipment was vital for the survival of thousands of displaced people. “We need to have proper sanitation, proper health care for the people themselves, and these supplies are vital for that – and indeed

Many of those have sought refuge in our camps and we’re now sending out relief supplies and equipment we need to support the people. “Flying it in is by far the quickest and safest way to deliver the equipment. “We’ do appreciate the involvement of the Australian Government in this endeavour,” he said. Defence has continued its support with several more C-17A Globemaster flights. An additional RAAF C-130J Hercules aircraft at Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates remains available to support the United Nations as required. These RAAF aircraft are equipped and crewed to support United Nations missions and are prepared to operate in the threat environment expected in South Sudan. Defence, along with other government agencies, continues to monitor the security situation in South Sudan. Despite international efforts to secure peace in Sudan few people expect that peace will come quickly or easily to a country that has endured fiece

fighting for a long time. When South Sudan became independent in 2011 two long-running civil wars persisted, with estimates a high as two million people killed. Job’s done, time to come home After eight years in Afghanistan the majority of Australian Defence Force personnel have returned to Australia, having completed a major coalition operation in the war-torn country. Combined Team Uruzgan (CT-U) has transferred the remaining infrastructure at Multi National Base Tarin Kot to the Afghan Government, having maintained a permanent presence in Uruzgan province since 2005. Major General Paul LaCamera, Commander of ISAF’s Regional Command South said that the Afghans have had the lead for security in Uruzgan for a year now. “The Afghans have contained the insurgency and built on the gains of recent years.” Home to nearly 10,000 people at the height of the campaign, the Multi-National Base at Tarin Kot had developed extensive infrastructure since 2005 including a sealed airfield and new civilian terminal. The base has been transferred to various Afghan Government ministries in accordance with the determination of the Uruzgan Base Closure Commission held in August this year. All transferred infrastructure has been deemed safe, secure and sustainable. Commander of the Australian Joint Task Force in the Middle East, Major General Craig Orme paid tribute to the effort of Australians who have served in the province over the

Following the completion of Australia’s mission in Uruzgan, Australia will shift to a nationally-oriented mission to provide ongoing training and advisory support for the Afghan National Security Forces (ANSF). Around 400 Defence personnel will remain in Afghanistan to advise and train the Afghan National Security Forces as they develop their command and logistics capabilities.” This contingent will include instructors, advisors, support staff and force protection elements assigned to the Afghan National Army (ANA) Office Academy and the Special Operations Advisory Group based in Kabul; ongoing advisory support to the ANA’s 205 Corps Headquarters in Kandahar; ongoing commitment of advisors to the Logistics Training Advisory Team in Kabul; and a continuation of embed staff within a range of roles in ISAF Headquarters.

Defence accepts first Seahawk ‘Romeos’ The Defence Materiel Organisation has taken delivery of the first two of 24 MH‑60R Seahawk Romeo maritime combat helicopters from the United States Navy. The MH-60R replaces the S-70B-2 Seahawk helicopter, which has operated off naval ships since 1989. Flying operations with Australia’s newest Seahawks has commenced at the US Navy’s Jacksonville Air Station in Florida.” The RAN’s 725 Squadron will be established at Jacksonville to work alongside US Navy Romeo squadrons for the next 12 months, to consolidate flying and maintenance skills. The project, designated AIR 9000 Phase 8, was approved in June 2011 with a budget of $3.2 billion. The delivery of these first two aircraft was achieved on budget and six months ahead of schedule. Defence Minister David Johnston said, “The handover of the first pair of Romeos means

Navy’s Fleet Air Arm is now equipped with one of the world’s most advanced and modern anti-submarine and surface warfare platforms currently in operation,” Senator Johnston said. “Acquisition of the Romeos means Navy will have the capacity to provide at least eight warships with a combat helicopter at the same time, including the ANZAC Class frigates and the new Air Warfare Destroyers,” the minister said, adding, “the remainder will be based at HMAS Albatross in Nowra.” The aircraft will be equipped with a highly sophisticated combat system designed to employ the Hellfire air-to-surface missile and Mark 54 anti-submarine torpedo. Like its predecessor, the MH-60R will be employed primarily in the Anti-Submarine Warfare role. Photo: Australia’s first MH-60R Seahawk Romeo being flown by RAN crews in the United States. (Defence)

ADGs protect Defence Force departures When air bases are set up as an operating base for military aircraft, often it’s defence force security personnel who are the first in, firstly to secure the area from any threat to the airfield and its assets, and then to maintain that level of securtiy for the duration of the operation. For the current contingent of RAAF airfield defence guards at the multinational air base at Tarin Kot in Afghanistan they have the job of

providing security during the final days of the ADF mission in Uruzgan Province. Any wind-down in military presence is a tense time, especially for security personnel, as opposing forces assess the increased vulnerability of the forces that remain. Comparison Rates and what they mean for loans Ever wondered why the Comparison Rate is currently lower for some of our fixed rate loans? If you are asked by a client, it is best to be able to explain how the calculation works… All comparison rate calculations are now made based on a legislated loan amount which is still $150,000. As it so happens, this was the average loan size when Comparison Rate Legislation was first introduced in Australia back in 2003. Unfortunately, this amount has not been updated to reflect the current average loan size, which is more in the range of $350,000. The Comparison Rate Calculation takes into account all the ascertainable fees and interest charges that will be incurred on the loan. Establishment costs, account keeping fees and discharge fees make their way into the calculation. These normally lift the comparison rate to be higher than the actual rate, so how it that the comparison rate for our fixed rate loans is lower than the actual fixed rate?

The answer to this question is due to the fact that the comparison rate is also calculated on what interest is paid on the loan over a weighted average term. The assumption is that after the fixed rate terms, the loan will automatically revert to a variable rate which is currently significantly lower than our fixed rates. The lower variable rate is more than enough to offset the impact of the fees and keeps the Comparison Rate lower than the current fixed rate. Still confused? Hyundai announces i40 upgrades Hyundai Motor Company Australia has started the New Year with the introduction of 2014 model upgrades to the stylish i40 Sedan and Tourer. Featuring a number of interior and exterior enhancements, including for the first time, the introduction of Smart Tailgate function and Hyundai’s Drive Mode Select system.
For additional driver and passenger convenience the Hyundai i40 Tourer Premium model will now feature Smart Tailgate, a hands-free power tailgate operation. When enabled in the ‘User Settings’ section in the Supervision dash cluster, the system will automatically activate 15 seconds after all doors are closed and locked. When activated, the Smart Tailgate function automatically opens the power tailgate when an individual holding the proximity smart key positions themselves within the detection zone (50-100cm behind the tailgate) for 3 seconds or more. As an additional safety

precaution an alarm is sounded and the vehicle’s hazard lights flash prior to the tailgate opening. Operation of the Smart Tailgate function can be cancelled at any time by pressing any button on the proximity smart key.
Across the range all i40 models will receive the all-new Drive Mode Select system. The system is activated via a centre console switch, allowing the driver to choose from Normal, Eco, or Sports mode to customise the drive ‘feel’ to best meet the environment. ‘Normal’ mode is most suited for day-to-day driving, ‘Eco’ mode reprograms automatic transmission shift points to achieve optimum fuel economy, whilst ‘Sports’ mode delays automatic transmission shift points and reduces steering assistance to achieve a sportier driving experience. The i40 was designed and engineered at the company’s European research and development centre in Russelsheim, Germany.

Jeep Grand Cherokee has outclassed talented rivals including those costing more than twice its price to become 4x4 Australia Magazine’s 2014 4x4 of the Year. Grand Cherokee Overland CRD diesel beat Range Rover Sport SDV6, Range Rover SDV8, Holden Colorado 7, Holden Colorado ute and Isuzu MU-X to earn the title from the highly respected magazine, which is read by hundreds of thousands of 4x4 enthusiasts every month. It also comes shortly after Grand Cherokee won Best 4WD in the Drive Car of the Year awards. 4x4 Australia Magazine Editor Matt Raudonikis praised Grand Cherokee’s numerous features and superior specification-for-price offering in honouring the vehicle with the coveted accolade. “This is a great all road touring vehicle,” Mr Raudonikis said. “Sure it doesn’t have the unstoppable off road ability of a Jeep Wrangler but it does everything else so well. “The Grand Cherokee Overland has a level of performance, safety, comfort and convenience features that belie its $71k price tag.” All contenders for the award were put through a demanding week-long drive program that comprised on and off road

terrain, highways, country roads, gravel roads, steep rocky tracks and beach driving. The 4x4 Of The Year judging panel, which includes past and present editors of the magazine and other industry experts, awarded the Jeep SUV in a unanimous decision. 4x4 Australia Magazine Road Test Editor Fraser Stronach said such an outcome further highlighted Grand Cherokee’s allround abilities. “Unanimous results are rare in the history of this award and this speaks volumes for the attributes, performance, appeal and, above all, the value of the Grand Cherokee CRD,” Mr Stronach said. “This is a brilliant back roads tourer that, by 4x4 standards, feels like
