All aboard the Peace Train The music of Cat Stevens remains as popular today as it was in the 1970s, and when the man himself walked away from the industry, it just made the songs of that magical era even more precious.

Daren Coggan is bringing his show ‘Peace Train – The Cat Stevens Story’ to Ipswich this month, the final show in a tour that has taken him around the country since early February.

Since its debut in 2009 the show has played to audiences nationwide, something that Darren never expected when he came up with the idea for telling the Cat Stevens story.

“The idea for the show came from something as simple as people telling me all the time I sounded like Cat Stevens. I’m a big fan of his and often would sing his songs, usually ‘Moon Shadow’ or ‘Wild World’. I would perform them in my own show, and people were always commenting on those songs, often asking me about him,” Darren said.

Darren has toured with stage shows ‘Grease’, and ‘Shout’ to name a few, and has won two Golden Guitar awards at the CMAA Country Music Awards in 2001 and 2008. Playing the guitar since he was a child, Darren is enjoying what is a very popular show.

“It’s been a really long tour, we actually began the whole tour in August last year and finishing it in Ipswich is going to be great.

“That whole genre of music was always on high rotation in my house growing up. My parents loved Cat Stevens. I’ve always been

heavily influenced by singers like him, and I clearly remember playing ‘Moon Shadow’ at age ten when I was learning the guitar. It’s uncanny I ended up doing a show about him.

“This show is not an impersonation, I simply narrate his story around the songs,” Darren said. “We have dressed up the show to try and recreate what it might have been like to see or hear Cat Stevens at his peak. The show is very much about treating his music and his story with great respect. I find his story so positive and the songs so beautiful, its all so relevant today. Its me, as me, telling his story.”

Cat Stevens shocked the music industry when in December 1977, after selling 60 million albums, he walked away from it all, and after changing his name to Yusuf Islam, dedicated his life to the Muslim community.

“Many people don’t know why he left the industry, and I didn’t know, so out of curiosity I looked into it, and as I dug the more interested I got. I looked into his story and found what was essentially, a journey of personal discovery, and I realised it would make a fascinating show tied in with some of the best songs of all time.

“I got a writer, and a director plus my sister as musical director so I surrounded myself with

good people to help me put it all together.

“I think at the peak of his career being a global star, with all the trappings of wealth and fame…..he reached a point when he said ‘is this it’? Artistically he was fulfilled but not spiritually. At the age of 36, he ultimately found fulfilment, as he was introduced to the Koran and the Islamic faith, because it was something he’d been looking for his entire life.

“He said to his audience that he was walking away, and his fans were devastated, but he’d become disillusioned with the lifestyle in the 60’s and 70’s. In my opinion I don’t think he could separate the music from the lifestyle.

“The only way he felt he could escape that life was to completely remove himself from the whole thing. He’s a man of his word, and that’s the theme of the show I suppose: you can change your life if you’re not satisfied with it. He really did something about it and turned his back on it for over 30 years, and it’s only in the last couple of years he’s involved again in music. He’s now in the position where he can separate the good from the bad.”

Does Darren have a theory as to the music and the never-ending popularity?

“I personally think the music is so popular still due to the timeless messages in the songs, of peace, tolerance and understanding. They are still relevant today, maybe even moreso?

“The show surprises me all the time as I thought the audiences were all going to be the original fans, but there are so many people coming now who are under 40…we get teens, twenty-somethings...there’s a whole generation that knows the music.

“It evokes an emotion in people, and these songs do that at every turn.

“We’ve done hundreds of these shows, and each night I relish doing them, I never tire of them. Tthat’s the sign of a good song. They are really poetry set to music, and for me it’s an incredible experience for me and the audience.

It’s an incredible body of work and to write it at such a young age like he did, in his 20’s and 30’s…its quite amazing.”

Commando drops in to keep Ipswich ‘HAPI’ Rotary Club recognises ‘Pride of Work’ Over the years the ‘Commando’ character has become an icon in the world of personal fitness.

For Steve ‘The Commando’ Willis, it was a case of ‘drop and give me fifty’ when he dropped into Ipswich as part of the ‘Healthy Active People in Ipswich’ (HAPI) program.

Kitted out in his trademark outfit, the star of TV’s ‘The Biggest Loser’ took over 30 participants through a workout which left many, including Councillors Andrew Antoniolli and David Morrison in a sweat by the end.

HAPI was created to get more people in the community to get involved in exercise and improve healthy eating habits, and since it began has had a hand in the obesity levels of the city drop.

Steve said that he loved doing events like this as it gives him a chance to do what he does best, and that’s make a difference in people’s lives.

Ipswich Life asked what he thinks about people who watch The Biggest Loser and say ‘it’s easy for them to lose weight, they are in a ‘fat camp… its different in real life’.

“To make a change it has to come from within… you have to take action and do it for yourself. It’s not easy, in any arena. It’s hard work, it’s a slog and its self discipline. It’s just about replacing excuses, making choices and habits that reinforce a positive lifestyle,” Steve said.

“Start moving more and eating better, that’s the best advice I can give not just the people of Ipswich but the whole nation.

“Eat protein, good fats and nutrients, and just remove the processed foods

from your diet because you WILL lose weight.

Once that happens your self-esteem will lift and you will do things you didn’t think you could do.”

Steve also agreed to settle an argument in the Ipswich Life office, and that is ‘is it better to train early in the morning, or at night?’

“I don’t believe that training at night or morning is any better than the other, it’s all about consistency. Simply get up and do more than what you’re doing now!”

The Rotary Club of Ipswich City’s ‘Pride of Work Award’s attracted a full house of 130 guests at Ipswich Girl’s Grammar School.

The PoW awards are founded on Rotary International’s philosophy of “service above self”, and a commitment to Vocational Service in recognising people who go above and beyond for their community.

This year, the Club’s theme focused on the valuable role of our education sector, with a keynote speaker address by Queensland’s Minister for Minister for Education, Training and Employment, the Honourable JohnPaul Langbroek.

Organiser, Jan Gadsden said “Our POW awards have become a gala event in the region. We were really excited to showcase the vital role of education this year. Our Club presented awards to a cross-section

of dedicated professionals across public and private schools, TAFE and university sectors, the Department of Education, Training and Employment and private RTOS. We recognized 16 remarkable people and teams in our region, for outstanding contributions to their profession. Many of our recipients have made education their life’s work. The support we received from the community was fantastic, with employers and business leaders coming on board to acknowledge the contributions of their people”.

All nominees received formal recognition, through a summary of their achievements and award presentations.

Staff from across the GE company descended on Springfield recently for a special working bee, to make the place greener.

Ipswich City Council Division 9 Councillor Sheila Ireland said the 125 employees had visited ‘The Cascades’ at Springfield Lakes and assisted council officers with tree planting in bio retention basins within the area.

“This work will help to further improve the water quality of this area,” Cr Ireland said.

“Council welcomes GE to our city and we look forward to working together on future environmental projects. The participating GE employees are all Brisbane based and work in different areas of the company such as health care, power and water and GE Capital.”

Cr Ireland said the day was part of the company’s regular work it undertook in the community.

“Each year the company’s employees take part together in an event and every GE employee also receives a paid day annually to allow them to undertake some sort of charitable works.

“Last year the staff donated 41,000 hours to the community.

“This year for their group effort the company chose to come to Ipswich because it is about to move its Queensland headquarters here.

A sister’s story: finding the right care for our Mum Why choose Seasons?

When my sister and I were looking for an aged care facility for our 86 year old mother, we were keen to find a safe and comfortable place where we would be happy to live if we were choosing a place for ourselves.

Creative Arts enabling smarter students The Creative Arts programme at The Springfield Anglican College forms an important and highly valued part of the College’s holistic approach to education, with students of all ages offered opportunities to participate in Music, Dance, Drama, Visual Art and Music.

Head of Creative Arts, Dr Philippa Robinson, said the programmes delivered at the College supported students to develop critical and abstract thinking as well as personal attributes including confidence and commitment.

“Research shows that students involved in the Creative Arts have stronger social skills and values and achieve higher academic results,” she said.

“Involvement in the Creative Arts areas also helps develop important life skills including teamwork, self-discipline, and resilience, all of which are important attributes not only whilst at College but also for life beyond school, irrespective of their chosen career path.

“Research also strongly supports engagement in the Creative Arts, with a positive correlation between such involvement and academic achievement.

“This is particularly true in the case of talented musicians who generally score very well in OP results.”

programmes to suit students’ needs, including a music programme designed to find the most suitable instrument for all students, an area Dr Robinson has completed considerable research in.

The College also supports involvement in public performances to further assist in developing student’s self-confidence. That’s why, outside of the classroom, students at the College have the opportunity to be involved in a large range of ensembles, bands and choirs.

In 2014, there are more than forty Creative Arts groupings available for students to participate in, which not only provides great choice across the breadth of Creative Arts but also, importantly, many of these groupings are across cohorts, enabling young students to work with, and be mentored by, older students.

Each year, students also have the opportunity to participate in a vast range of performances across the Creative Arts spectrum, ranging from the Ipswich, Beenleigh

and Brisbane Eisteddfods and the Queensland Youth Theatresports Festival to community functions such as the National Seniors Association Luncheon.

In addition, the College provides in-house opportunities for students to showcase their artistic talents throughout the year, with a number of performances, music nights and art shows highlighting the diverse talents of students.

The College is extremely proud of its highly successful Inter Clan Creative Arts Festival, which enables all students from across the College to participate in this in-house festival

spanning Music, Dance, Drama, Visual Art and Bible Verse reading.

Further, this year the College has also introduced several other opportunities for students to showcase their creative talents including vocal competition ‘Singing with the Stars’, an Instrumental Solo and Concerto Competition and a Dance Competition.

The College also produces a major musical production every second year, providing an opportunity for students to perform on stage or behind-the-scenes as part of stage crew.

The King and I in 2013 was the College’s best production to date, with students now looking forward to the 2015 musical.

As a reflection of the commitment to support the growing interest of students in the Creative Arts, this year the College will begin construction on a Creative Arts Precinct.

This purpose-built facility will provide flexible learning spaces for each of the subject areas within the Creative Arts and will also integrate a strong technology emphasis to the learning opportunities provided.

It will also include an outdoor performance space and an outdoor Visual Art courtyard as well as various spaces to showcase student artwork.

The Springfield Anglican College’s Creative Arts Precinct is scheduled for completion in time for the 2015 school year, ensuring that the Creative Arts will continue to be a vibrant and highly active programme for years to come.

Geoff celebrates 30 years ‘on the road’ Up to three generations of students and parents at Ipswich Central State School have Geoff Watson to thank for their safety, as he recently clocked up 30 years on the job.

There are only 14 people who are still doing the job since the program began, with 2000 people now involved across the state.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Scott Emerson, Minister for Education, Training and Employment John Paul Langbroek and Member for Ipswich Ian Berry celebrated the milestone with Queensland’s longest serving supervisor in Ipswich.

“It was great to congratulate Geoffrey Watson. Since 1984 Mr Watson has played a crucial role in protecting children as they travel to and from school.” Mr Emerson said.

“Since the scheme has been operating, not a single fatality has occurred at a supervised crossing. Making the journey to school as safe as possible is part of our strong plan for a brighter future for Queensland kids.”

Geoff was thanked by the entire school with a special assembly to show their appreciation.

“My daughter was going to this school back in 1984 and the principal said that if I wanted the job it was mine,” Geoff said. “I never imagined thirty years later I’d still be doing it.”

That’s thirty years, and more importantly, thirty Ipswich winters Geoff has been there at the crossing in all kinds of weather.

“It’s hard to get up some days, especially when its raining, but it keeps me busy, plus I’ve met so many beautiful kids and parents.

“I’d recommend this job to anyone, its so rewarding working with young children.”

Mr Langbroek said safety in and out of the classroom was a top priority for schools.

“At the start and end of the day, when there is often a lot of excitement, school crossing supervisors play an important role in keeping students safe,” Mr Langbroek said.

“I would like to thank and congratulate the many school crossing supervisors who have dedicated their time to keep our children safe.”

A total of 255 schools have adopted the School Crossing Supervisor program and there are now 1,210 crossings, staffed by over 1,900 supervisors at 652 Queensland schools.

Ipswich State High School ready for 2015 While Year 7 students may not turn up on the doorstep of Ipswich SHS until 2015 there has already been a significant amount of planning taking place for their much-anticipated arrival.

Children’s feet are highly vulnerable to injury as they continue development into their late teenage years, so it is important to be able to recognise a few more common lower limb aches and pains that can affect your child.

Flat Feet Flexible flatfoot or a pronated foot is a condition usually caused by loose ligaments within the feet. Flat feet can cause aching feet or legs, especially during and/or after exercise. Other problems that can arise include poor balance’ poor coordination, tripping over’, bunions, heel and knee pain.

Treatment with foot orthotics may be indicated if symptoms are occurring or if the flat foot is severe.

Heel Pain/Severs Disease Severs disease is an injury to the growth plate of the heel bone where the Achilles tendon attaches, commonly affecting active children 10 to 14 years of age.

What to look for? Your child may experience pain at the back of the heel bone. This is worse with exercise. Initially, it is best to reduce sports/activity & ice the painful area. Also check the fit of your child’s footwear. If pain persists, it is recommended to seek opinion with a Podiatrist.

Knee Pain/Osgood Schlatters Osgood-Schlatters causes pain, tenderness and swelling just below the knee, and down the shin (tibia). It is more common in boys, overweight children and from overzealous activities such as running and jumping.

The condition will usually present with tenderness and swelling just below the knee.

Frequent Ankle Sprains An ankle sprain occurs when there is a sudden twisting motion at the ankle during weight loading. This can overstretch or even break the ligaments resulting in pain, swelling, bruising and the inability to weight bear. If your child sprains or twists their ankle frequently, a Podiatrist is able to manage this through exercises and the use of orthoses.

Growing Pains Growing pains are harmless muscle pain which can affect children from 3 years of age right through to adolescence. They often occur of an evening and affect either the calf muscles, thigh muscles or behind the knee.

There are numerous causes including muscle tiredness and poor postural control.

Growing pains can be infrequent and can be brought on by increased activity during the day. The pain is always gone by the morning. Growing pains do not affect the way a child walks or runs although lower limb biomechanics can be an attributing factor to the problem.

Local educators fly the flag at World Forum Four educators, including one from Springfield represented Queensland and Australia at the World Forum for Early Care and Education recently. Trisha Dean, Kristy-Lee, Elaine Drewett and Sharon Kneen joined 841 early childhood leaders and practitioners from 81 nations at the 10th World Forum on Early Care and Education held in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

The focus of the event was to discuss the delivery of quality services to young children globally and to develop action plans for achieving quality in diverse settings.

Kristy-Lee Hudspith from Springfield Child Care and Early Education Centre said that going to the conference and representing the area was a fantastic experience.

“The people there were so outgoing, it is a place with a wonderful vibe. I met people from all over the world all who work in childcare.

I thought my geography was quite good, but it was a real eye-opener, you don’t think of childcare in a global scale until you meet someone from Columbia or Afghanistan and hear what childcare is like in their country.

“Everyone shared the same concerns about everyone being so busy, being time-poor and it seems that childhoods are being forgotten. It was for me wonderful to hear how people are trying to reverse that,” Kristy-Lee said.

“I saw so many wonderful ideas of how to make play for kids, and meeting people from poorer countries where many families live in shelters. I’ve taken on board about giving children a voice, no matter how young they are they want to be heard.”

Sharon Kneen from Eskay kids agreed.

“For children of the world to have promising futures early childhood programs must meet their needs for optimal growth and development,” Sharon said. “By attending the World Forum, I had the unique opportunity to network with early childhood leaders from six continents and share ideas about what quality really means.

“This topic is near and dear to my heart,” Sharon said “because every child, regardless of their physical or intellectual challenges, deserves all the help they need to meet their full potential.”

Presentations were made at the World Forum by more than 250 early childhood professionals from all over the world, including Australia, Afghanistan, Colombia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iraq, Myanmar, Pakistan, Peru, Qatar, and Zimbabwe. “It was very humbling that Australia had the 3rd largest contingency per capita”, Mrs Kneen said.

In that time the model search has become a fabulous icon and has propelled Young hopeful models into become top international models gracing the covers and runways of New York, Paris, London and Milan.

The Young Model Discovery is a charity event, over the years it has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to chosen charities. Over the past few years, after seeing a great need for help, we began raising much needed funds for the Chilhood Cancer Support inc.

The organisation began in 1975 when a group of parents with children undergoing treatment for leukaemia & cancer, at the Royal Children’s Hospital in Brisbane, and decided to meet formally to discuss ways in which they could help each other and their children.

The Young Model Discovery is held in participating shopping centers throughout Queensland over a 5 month period open to

age groups 5 – 19 years.

In early July two heats and a semi-final will be held at Riverlink Shopping Centre.

One of the highlights will be a screening of the Disney hit ‘Frozen’.

Attendees will be able to meet, or revisit this cast of unforgettable characters and sing along to their favourite songs. Come in costume (or borrow theirs) and have your photo taken with the Olaf lookalike. The cost is $1.40 per ticket which is payable at time of booking and it screens on July 4th. ‘Wind Tubes’ fun at Ipswich Art Gallery Child creativity is soaring to exciting new heights at the Ipswich Art Gallery’s latest exhibition ‘Wind Tubes’, set to be a big hit these school holidays.

Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said the free exhibition featured specially-designed exhibits where children could creatively explore the power of air pressure.

“Wind Tubes celebrates aerodynamics, invention and experimentation in an engaging way and encourages children to use everyday materials to design original creations for launch inside columns of moving air,” Cr Pisasale said.

“The challenge is to devise an object that can float within the wind tubes and for kids to experience the fun of undertaking a design project from start to finish and seeing their inventions take flight.

“The exhibition also includes a fantastic Wind Wall where kids will love watching objects as they’re propelled through a labyrinth of clear plastic tubes at different speeds.”

Bookings are also open for the Gallery’s Wind Tubes toddler program, with special sessions planned throughout May and June.

website for these 45-minute sessions which are led by an experienced early learning educator and incorporate music, movement and play.

Rosewood Skate Bowl gets a touch up Rosewood Skate Bowl now has extra protection from unwanted graffiti.

Division 10 Councillor David Pahlke said the skate bowl in Tom Lenihan Park had been treated with a special coating to make it more resistant to graffiti.

Cr Pahlke said the work had been completed under the GraffitiStop Clean-up Program operated by council under the Parks, Sport and Recreation Department.

“This program consists of a number of initiatives designed to deal with and limit graffiti vandalism in Ipswich,” he said.

“One of the key projects is the application of a special anti-graffiti coating to all Ipswich skate parks.

“It is great that the popular Rosewood Skate Bowl has been able to be the recipient of this special treatment.

“This facility is extremely popular with local youth and skating enthusiasts and the new works will help to ensure that it is kept in a tidier condition.

“It will also help ensure that any graffiti can be more easily removed without damaging

the surface of the skate bowl.”

Cr Pahlke said the Ipswich skate park antigraffiti project had been funded by the State Government and council.

“As well as providing funds for the antigraffiti treatment, the State Government also contributed funds towards the purchase of a hot water blaster for use by council in the graffiti removal project.”

The Australian Sports Commission’s Future of Australian Sport 2013 report states that there are more than 990 skate parks in Australia today.

It also detailed how two new skate parks have been built every week on average in Australia since 2005 in response to the activity’s popularity.

There are 11 skate bowls in Ipswich with 10 of them maintained by council and the one in Limestone Park on Griffith Rd operated by the Ipswich Police Citizens Youth Club.

With summer gone, everyone is ready for a change. Brookvale Union’s new Alcoholic ginger beer and Apple Cider has proved so popular we now have it on tap in Ale House 24.

With the tagline “Quality Nonsense” I wasn’t sure what exactly to expect at first, but the ginger beer obviously hits the spot with an increasing number of our regular customers.

The cider is still available in bottles, with what appears to be a cider shack levitating in the clouds. Topped off (no pun intended) by a creative and utterly brilliant designed bottle cap. By the time I had seen the bottles I ‘needed’ to drink them!!

The ginger beer is a delightful mix of spicy ginger flavour and a smooth after taste that makes you want more. It’s best served with ice to keep it as cold as possible for those warm summer days. At only 4%abv, this has proved to be a hit. Matched with a Grilled Roo salad on the Yamanto Tavern menu, which shares a touch of

ginger, would make for a nice taste alignment. The cider has a whole different feel to it, crisp but not too sour, with a touch of sweetness, an easy drinking 5.2% abv will please all. Paired with a Crisp Pork Belly, the flavours from Mustard Jus adds to the enjoyment of this “beery” cider. To enjoy at home, both come in 500ml bottles and 12 pack cartons.

Possibly the icing on the cake for these two drinks is a toungein-cheek reference which says (possibly produced by 4 Pines Brewing Co.) typically a beer only company, suggesting they had a hand in creating the new Cider and Ginger Beer.

So, if you like a draft then come in and give the ginger beer a go, for a refreshing drink with a great taste. Don’t forget to try the cider as well.

Squadron ready to go anywhere, anytime After three weeks of intensive training, No 381 Squadron at RAAF Amberley is certified as capable and prepared to go anywhere at anytime in support of air operations.

As one of three Combat Support Group (CSG) Contingency Response Squadrons (CRS), 381 Squadron was put through its paces at both RAAF Bases Williamtown and Amberley recently.

WGCDR Richard Ensor said the Force Concentration Training (FCT) conducted by 295 Squadron (Training and Standards) is designed to prepare the squadron for Very Short Notice to Move (VSNTM), generally within 48 hours, on deployments to an environment where they support air base or non air base operations either within Australia or overseas.

“The majority of personnel assigned to the CRS for the period of the online commitment are not posted to the squadron so its a unique situation,” he said.

The activities were split into three key activities: Executive Week, FCT and Operational Readiness Exercise (ORX).

The Executive week provided an opportunity for the CO and XO to develop a rapport with the junior officers and WOD attached to 381SQN for the online period.

“The Executive week was essential for delivering my intent and enabling an environment were the officers can pressto-test and ask questions before larger collective activities commenced, also begin building effective working relationships,” said WGCDR Ensor.

WGCDR Simpson, said even though 295SQN is not scheduled to achieve IOC until July 2014, the squadron has been busy concurrently establishing the squadron and delivering Mission Specific Training (MST) to CSU rotation 11, Kandahar Airfield Flightline security force and Force Concentration Training (FCT) for 381SQN. Ipswich turns out to honour its own Defence Force personnel into the city Ipswich has turned out in force to welcome almost 1500 Air Force and Australian Army personnel into the city for the ceremonial Freedom of the City march. The ceremonial occasion, steeped in tradition, allowed Ipswich people to show their appreciation for the contribution of our Armed Forces to the Defence of Australia, and the 75-year bond between Ipswich and RAAF Base Amberley.

The day was one of pomp and ceremony, music and colour as Defence Force personnel exercised their right of entry into the city, with the ceremonial challenge by the Senior Police Officer Ipswich. Credentials in order, the soldiers and airmen were allowed to march through the city with swords drawn, bayonets fixed, drums beating, bands playing and colours flying.

This is a traditional right of military forces honoured by cities by conferring the ‘Freedom of the City’. Overhead, four F/A-18F Super Hornets flew past at low level followed

by C-17A Globemaster III and KC-30A Air Refuelling aircraft.

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said that marching through a city was traditioally how an army would march into battle, so granting such permission was rare and showed the city trusted the visiting military.

“Today, Freedom of Entry is less about

granting friendly armies entry into a city and more about an honourable distinction a city may bestow on a contingent of the Australian Defence Force,” Cr Pisasale said.

“Originally granted in June 1970, RAAF personnel have exercised their right to Freedom of Entry on four other occasions.

As one of Ipswich’s long-standing establishments, RAAF Amberley is Australia’s largest operational base, contributing significantly to the Ipswich economy.”

Located on Ipswich’s outskirts, the base commenced operations on June 17, 1940.

The name Amberley was given to the area by farmer James Edwin Collet who arrived from Sussex in England in the 1850s to settle on a property at Three Mile Creek west of Ipswich.

He called the property Amberley after his home town which is a small village on the River Aron in East Sussex.

Senior Air Force Officer Queensland, Air Commodore Tim Innes said he was proud the personnel of the base and the strong relationship with the city of Ipswich.

“I am extremely proud of the men and women of RAAF Base Amberley as they exercise their Freedom of Entry right “There are more than 5000 personnel who work at Amberley, more than 4000 of whom are uniformed ADF members.”

For 75 years Ipswich and the Air Base have enjoyed a bond of friendship and mutual support. Rare lots released at Sovereign Pocket Borrowing tips for self-employed and contractors With interest rates low and house prices taking off in Sydney and Melbourne, commentators have claimed that lending criteria has slackened and borrowers are taking home loans they can’t afford.

I don’t agree with this. Lending criteria is as solid as it has been since the Global Financial Crisis and most borrowers are borrowing no more than 80 per cent of the property price.

Mortgage defaults dropped throughout 2013 according to the Fitch rating agency, to just 1.25 per cent of mortgages more than 30 days in arrears.

Bemused by all of this are the self-employed and contractors, many of whom find it as hard as ever to get a home loan. For these people, the claims about easy mortgages are just fantasyland.

The good news is that mortgage lenders do have loans for self-employed people, contractors and business owners so long as you can substantiate your income.

Here’s a few tips: *Full doc: Self-employed people don’t always need a ‘low documentation’ loan, with the higher interest rates those mortgages carry. ‘Low doc’ simply means alternative forms of income confirmation (bank statements, financial statements, accountants’ declarations) as opposed to PAYG slips and tax returns. If you have tax returns you should be pursuing a full documentation loan at standard rates. *Have income: showing income to afford the loan is just the start; when you subtract monthly expenses you must have cash left over to service the loan. This is called serviceability. *Work on serviceability: build a history (at least six months) of low expenses and high income. Lenders and brokers are obliged to confirm both, so it is important to establish a solid track record.

*Reduce debt: eliminate or reduce your consumer debt. Lenders count the limit on your credit cards as money owed, not the balance. *Show savings: a savings history means you’re serious about the loan and you live within your means. *Be concise: provide the documents the lender or broker asks for. They may include BAS statements, tax returns, bank accounts and perhaps a declaration from your accountant. *Do your taxes: keep your taxes up to date so you can always show your most recent income history. And make sure the tax assessments are paid. Self-employed applicants usually have their tax portals checked for taxes outstanding. *Understand your structure: Understand how your business structure affects your personal income and what happens to your borrowing power if your taxable income is too low. *Have a strategy: consult with a mortgage broker or a loans manager and formulate a plan for buying your property. This allows you to build your serviceability based on expert advice. *Build a good record: once you have a mortgage it can be used to consolidate debt or refinance to a better loan. However, you must have a good record with that loan.

Of interest to subsequent lenders will be a history of on-time payment and extra lump sum payments you made.

Finally, be open with brokers or lenders.

They are required to verify what you say and perform checks on the documents provided.

If you don’t tell the truth, you could end up with a loan that you can’t afford or nothing at all.

Ford reveals its Celebration FPV GT F and Pursuit models

Ford has officially launched its celebration FPV models, the limited-edition FPV GT F sedan and Pursuit Ute. The most powerful GT sedan ever produced by Ford Australia, the FPV GT F is powered by a 351 kilowatt supercharged 5.0-litre V8 engine. The GT F’s output was specifically chosen as a reference to the iconic 351 cubic-inch 5.8 litre V8s that powered the original Falcon GTs. Apart from developing a character-filled 351 kW of power, the V8 engine in the GT F sedan has a transient overboost function in the engine management system that will enable drivers to access 15 per cent more power, if the prevailing conditions are favourable.

The GT F 351’s power curve has been calculated to deliver a very noticeable feel to the car’s performance.

Developed to celebrate Ford’s performance brand, the new FPV GT F also pays homage to the legendary Falcon GTs of the late 1960s and early 1970s.

Each will carry an individual build number, with many specific numbers reserved by collectors and Falcon GT enthusiasts.

The Volkswagen Amarok has added another trophy to its collection of local and international awards with the announcement of the Delivery Magazine ‘Best Ute of 2014’.

This Australian award specifically recognised the Amarok range equipped with an eightspeed automatic transmission, which was first introduced into the Australian market in 2012; making the Amarok the first ute in Australia with an eight-speed automatic transmission.

The Amarok’s eight-speed automatic provides a greater spread of transmission ratios than a conventional five or six-speed automatic gearbox, affording very positive effects: the TDI engine is more effective in every rpm range, while being more fuel efficient and agile.

The eighth gear is configured for overdrive, reducing engine speed and saving fuel, while the low first gear is designed for off-road use and towing.

This versatile set-up means the autoequipped Amarok with permanent four-wheel drive is just as capable in all terrain use as the manual version, without the need for additional reduction gearing.
