Meet the Authors in Ipswich Good friends Bel Messer and Rosie Luik will share some tips with parents on how to get through some of those ‘difficult’ conversations in life when they visit Ipswich this week. The duo are the feature authors in the Ipswich Libraries’ Paper Tales - Meet the Authors series on June 2. The friends are behind a number of children’s story books in Australia including the newly released 21st Century Guide to the Birds and the Bees. This book is the second title in the I Am Extra Special series, covering various types of conception from IVF, to IUI, to surrogacy and sex. The first book in the series - An IVF Story - teaches children born through IVF about how they were conceived. Their series, I Am Extra Special, was developed in 2014 as they both embarked on a mission to create engaging children’s storybooks with a purpose. Bel and Rosie are both married mothers with seven children between them. Also, with Rosie being the first legal altruistic surrogate of twins in Queensland for another one of her good friends, it became apparent there was a lack of storybooks available for children on topics that are proven difficult and sometimes taboo. The series was then born as a tool for families to use to educate young children. Through simple text and enjoyable illustrations, the series is designed to help parents start what sometimes can be tricky

conversations. Bel is a wife and mother of three children conceived both naturally and though IVF who has a background in sales and a passion for art in all of its forms. Rosie is a mother of four young children, conceived naturally and through IUI Rosie runs her family business as well as her home with her wonderfully supportive husband. Rosie also became the first legal altruistic surrogate of twin IVF babies in Queensland in 2011. Book sales and signings will be available. STAR CHAT Nobody puts Kirby in the corner CELEBRITY NEWS
‘Dirty Dancing’ is the role that performer Kirby Burgess was destined to play, and she’s having the ‘Time of Her Life’.
Currently playing the lead in the new production of Dirty Dancing, Kirby has a long list of stage, TV, and film work under her belt, including the current series of Wonderland and movies like The Great Gatsby, but it is theatre and dance where her heart is. She first fell in love with the movie as a seven year old, when she found the video cassette (Editor’s note: if you don’t know what that is, ask someone over 30) in her parent’s chest of drawers, thinking it was a ‘dirty’ movie. Thankfully, it wasn’t, but it didn’t stop Kirby playing it to death, even to this day. “I honestly fell in love with it right from the beginning,” Kirby said during final rehearsals for the show in Brisbane. “When the original production of this show came out in 2004 I was asked to be in it, but they realised it wouldn’t be the best idea to have a 15 year old girl rubbing up against men on stage! “Dirty Dancing was such a part of my life as a kid, I watched it every couple of months, and I knew all the lines. So in many ways I didn’t have to learn the script for the stage show… just the new lines, because I still to this day know it word for word. “So many movies parody Dirty Dancing, but what truly works in that movie would just be funny in others. It was one of those movies where word of mouth just spread.” Like many shows in the last decade, the source material has been a movie (Lion King
anyone?), and this gives a new show a built in audience. “Many people in the audiences are reminiscing about seeing this film when they were growing up. It started in 2004 in Australia, and has been all over the world, this is a version that has truly evolved over time… technically too The show is the same as the movie, the script is the same as the movie, and there is no middle man… the writer of the movie has written this show, so it really is ‘from the source’. It’s so good to part of an Australian production and its great to be a part of something that has gone worldwide. “In Australia musical theatre is hard and expensive to put on. They know that audiences are going to trust a show based on a popular movie. If they’ve seen the film and love it, they will want to see the stage show. Sure, there are big shows like Wicked which are ‘events’, but these days it’s hard to get people to afford to go to more than one or two shows a year, so audiences tend to be very choosy,” Kirby said. Kirby has been the understudy in three big productions: Hairspray, High School Musical and An Officer and A Gentleman, and having the lead role in a show is something she’s finding a lot less demanding. “It’s a stressful position being an understudy. You’re always on call even during a show. I’ve gone on stage mid-show when literally one person walked off and I walked on.
“It’s very demanding, as you have your own part and others to learn too, and it really takes over your life.” The dancing aspect didn’t bother Kirby as it has been part of her life since a young age, and her favourite moment of the show is THAT leap into the arms of Kurt Phelan, (who plays Johnny Castle, the role made famous by the late Patrick Swayze). “I’m a trained dancer, and have danced since I was three. I’ve never had stage fright in my life, in fact my parents always had to drag me off. It’s more a challenge for me to be on stage and be scared, and NOT know how to dance… as my character does. Dancing is second nature to me. “As corny as this sounds you can feel the energy in the room when they know that big leap is coming, and I sense people breathing in and getting ready to scream! It’s a real payoff at the end of the show for Kurt and I. That’s what they came to see. It makes us excited, and the audience do too,” Kirby said.

Kelly Dixon, from QUT’s School of Psychology and Counselling, has looked at the mental health impacts caused by the Brisbane 2011 and the Mackay 2008 flood disasters which also impacted heavily on Ipswich in 2011. Her research included talking to several families from the Ipswich regions, particularly in Goodna. Presenting her findings at the Australian and New Zealand Disaster and Emergency Management Conference this month, Ms Dixon said while the flood was frightening on the day, the most difficult aspect for many people was the aftermath including the cleanup, the re-building process and dealing with insurance companies. As part of her research, Ms Dixon surveyed more than 150 flood victims to find out what factors were best able to predict posttraumatic stress and depression. “The findings showed that aftermath stress contributed to poor mental health outcomes over and above the flood itself,” Kelly said. “People who found their insurance company to be helpful, described less stress overall, whereas those who had difficulty with the insurance process were more likely to describe the flood aftermath period as extremely stressful,” she said. Some good did come of the floods, and that is that people are now more aware about their insurance cover, and while some insurance companies got shocking publicity for their actions, it has forced a rethink of floods.
“One of the best things to come out of all this was that insurance companies are now more upfront about what you are and are not covered for. One insurance company now actively promotes the fact that flood insurance is automatically included so in many ways should it happen again people are more informed about their options in advance. “It is important to recognise that the majority of people were quite resilient and are not suffering any long term ill-effects,” Kelly said. “Additionally, many survivors had in fact grown through their experience, and now reported greater resilience and feeling like they had more personal strength. “Survivors said they were more confident they could cope with difficult circumstances in the future and they had found the experience had strengthened their relationships and social networks.” Kelly has some advice for people who have children who still get nervous during rain events. “This did come up quite often in my research, the fact that children do get nervous during big storms, or rain events like the one we had a few weeks ago when we got over 100mm in one day! “The advice I’d give them is to reassure children that they are safe. If children see parents getting nervous then that makes them feel anxious,” Kelly said. “Just keep reassuring them that everything is fine. Material things can be replaced, but people can’t.”

TAFE Queensland South West students practise their skills under pressure TAFE Queensland South West in Bundamba recently played host to the region’s most competitive (and talented!) tradespeople, with the first of a series of several WorldSkills Australia Southern Queensland regional competitions pitting students against each other in an intensive and complex landscape construction challenge. The competition spanned over several hours and gave participants the opportunity to earn a place at the national WorldSkills Australia competition, to compete for a position on the esteemed ‘Skillaroos’ Australian team. Landscape Construction teacher Paul Luck said TAFE Queensland South West landscape construction students are always encouraged to take part in these types of activities, saying TAFE Queensland training is about enabling students to ‘get their hands dirty’, with as much practical experience as possible. “Our focus always is ensuring our students graduate job-ready; this mean getting them out in the garden, on the tools, on projects, showing them how to produce client-standard work in a time efficient way. “This WorldSkills Australia Southern Queensland regional competition was another opportunity for them to experience what it’s like being a professional landscaper; the activity had a high level of complexity involving planning, set out, geometry and time management; all of the professional trade skills a landscaper needs,” Paul said.

We caught up with Ryan to see how he felt about winning the competition. 1. What were you required to do on the day? We had to follow a plan, which we were given in the morning and over the course of the day use different mediums to create a multi-textured project. The end result encompassed basically everything you’re required to do as a landscaper. 2. What did you find the most challenging part? Bricks take the longest, and the paving you’ve got to get right. At the start of the day I was pretty confident, and then at the half way mark I was a bit concerned I wasn’t going to get through it, but I got there in the end. 3. What do you most enjoy about this industry? I love creating things, working with my hands; I’ve always been a creative person who likes to solve problems. 4. What does winning this WorldSkills Australia regional gold medal mean to you? Winning has given me more confidence in my ability to do my job, it really means a lot, and looks good on my résumé too. A certificate will be made available for all patrons involved in the attempt by the team of World Record Marshalls. This attempt and the counting process has been pre-approved by the Guinness Book of Records so now it is up to the community of Ipswich to be part of something which could possibly stand for decades!. Tickets are already on sale and over 15,000 have already been snapped up, a figure that shows how big the day will be with record pre-sales. If you want to come to the Cup on a budget, for the first time you can pre purchase a General Admission ticket for just $10 and this includes a complimentary drink on arrival! These vouchers may be redeemed at either the XXXX Beer Garden Bars or at the Arctic Kiss Ice Bar – another new initiative this year. Lagoon ready for Spring The new Robelle Lagoon near Orion Shopping Centre at Springfield is nearing the end of construction and is on track to be open in Spring. Announced in March 2014, the $13 million project is set for an opening on the first Saturday in Spring, Septmber 5. Spread over three sections for all ages, the lagoon will also include a kiosk, changing rooms, grassed areas, a young children’s play area, lagoon and a pool. All up, there will be over 1.5 million litres of water to play in which will have the latest in filtration, a system so powerful that it filters every drop of water every 2 hours. There will be other surrounding places of interest, including eateries in the GE building, Orion Springfield Central, plus it is right opposite the brand new Event Cinemas complex which is also on track to open in time for the busy Summer blockbuster season. Cr David Morrison took Ipswich Life on a guided tour of the site, which has overcome several rain events to stay on track for the scheduled opening. “I believe Robelle Domain will become one of South East Queensland’s premier parklands,” Mr Morrison said. “I may be biased but I have not come across a park like Robelle Domain. We expect it to attract around 100,000 visitors each year. “The lagoon area will have life savers during the hours of operation and will have safe city cameras, and a security presence outside those hours of operation. “But please remember that it is vital for
parents to know that all children under 12 should always be supervised by an adult and only those over 18 have the authority to supervise . “I can’t wait to see the added BBQ facilities, shade umbrellas and trees which is going to make this an Icon for years to come for the City of Ipswich , and just like stage one of Robelle Domain, the Lagoon will transform at night through the use of creative lighting. “Ipswich has some wonderful parks and I encourage residents to try and explore a park in Ipswich they have never been to and I know they will be pleasantly surprised!” Mr Morrison said. Mayor Paul Pisasale said at the announcement that this was an exciting time to be part of Ipswich. “We are committed to a city that is happy, lively and a place where people can’t wait to bring their kids,” he said. “Whether that’s to have an ice cream and a splash in the lagoon on the weekend, or to make a permanent home for the family, everyone is welcome in Ipswich and we can’t wait to see you.” The 3.74 hectare development that includes the lagoon, new green space and walking tracks brings together Robelle Domain, Orion Town Centre, Springfield Central train station, Education City and the Parklands Business District into a single unified hub.

Fernvale church lends a hand Making Great Happen to cyclone-ravaged Vanuatu OPEN DAY In the aftermath of Cyclone Pam, which ripped through the islands of Vanuatu, Fernvale Community Church is sending vital supplies and working with churches in Vanuatu to help rebuild a nation. Aid is slowly reaching Vanuatu’s outlying islands but thousands of people are displaced, homes flattened and crops destroyed. Pastor Greg Muller said that the cyclone has hit the nation hard but that the people are regrouping, to rebuild and go forward. “They just need a lot of help from us, with schools and housing completely destroyed and, more importantly, crops destroyed,” he said. “As subsistance farmers, crops were their only source of food, and suddenly that’s all gone along with their woven palm leaf homes, literally blown away. “They can’t even find materials to rebuild their homes and they are totally dependent on aid to feed themselves.” Pastor Muller said the Fernvale Church’s focus was on Tanna Island, directly in the path of the storm. Decimation is the only word to describe the widespread damage, with hardly a leaf on a tree on what used to be a lush green island that is now brown and lifeless. More than 70 per cent of the housing on Tanna Island was completely destroyed. Having visited Vanuatu regularly over the past six years, Pastor Muller knows what the island group was like during that time and what is is like following the cyclone. “We have taken teams to Vanuatu regularly to give them exposure to what life is like in another country and to teach and train
leadership of the villages and churches in the areas of life and ministry,” he said. “What has happened there is hard to comprehend, with schools, kindergartens and churches destroyed, people homeless and supplies of drinking water severely diminished. In many places the only thing remaining is the concrete slab of the building.” Pastor Muller said the aim is to raise $10,000 over the next three months to send to Vanuatu, to be distributed by the churches there directly to the people to help them rebuild their shattered lives. Breastscreen Bras ‘Bedazzled’ BreastScreen Queensland’s Ipswich service has delivered ‘bedazzling’ results, screening more than 1000 women at Ipswich Health Plaza in April. The result was announced in conjunction with the service’s ‘Bedazzle-A-Bra’ challenge, which attracted entries from breast cancer survivors and everyday women throughout the community who decorated a bra in a variety of colours and styles. BreastScreen Health Promotion Officer Tanya Trost said the challenge was a fun way to raise awareness about the importance of having regular screening mammograms. “While the risk of developing breast cancer increases significantly after the age of 50, regular screening every two years can assist in early detection and increase the likelihood of
successful treatment,” said Ms Trost. The winning entry ‘Butterflies’ uses the subtle symbol of transformation to represent breast cancer survival. Local Queensland Police Sergeant Nadine Webster and her daughter were runners up for their entry ‘Lawless’, which they dedicated to the memory of all police women, Queensland Police Service members and wives. The service conducted 1,053 mammograms; 880 of which were rescreens and 173 were women in the program for the first time. Under the BreastScreen Queensland program, screening is free and for women aged 40 and over. Getting a check every two years is recommended. For more information call 3817 2530.

Tougher penalties for offenders Motorists repeatedly caught texting or using their mobile phone while driving will face stiffer penalties under changes by the State Government. All of the recommendations are strongly supported by key stakeholders, including the Police, RACQ, CARRS-Q, Bicycle Queensland, the Motorcycle Riders Association of Queensland and the Queensland Trucking Association. Drivers caught committing repeat mobile phone offences within a year can expect double demerits, similar to those imposed on repeat offenders who don’t wear a seatbelt or a motorcycle helmet, or who exceed the speed limit by more than 20 kilometres. “It was the worst Easter road toll in Queensland in more than 20 years,” said Police Minister Jo-Ann Miller. “For too long, dangerous unregistered and unlicensed drivers have been overrepresented in crash statistics. Greater use of number plate recognition technology will give police the resources they need to target reckless and irresponsible drivers. “We will expand training for our road policing officers to better detect and deter broader criminal activities,” Ms Miller said. The outcomes of the Safer Roads, Safer Queensland forum will shape the state’s Road Safety Action Plan over the next two years.
The Road Safety Action plan includes: • Prioritise motorcycle safety for new and returning riders, including a television and social media campaign in June 2015 • Introduce motorcycle licensing reforms, such as pre-learner training courses, in consultation with stakeholders, industry partners and the community • Launch a youth road safety innovation challenge to engage with 16–24 year olds by brainstorming key issues and innovative solutions, as the first step in broader engagement with young people • Form a Citizens’ Taskforce to report on complex road safety issues, including ways to encourage safe driving • Introduce double demerit points for two or more mobile phone offences committed within one year, similar to current arrangements for repeat seatbelt, motorcycle helmet and high-range speeding offences • Address dangerous unregistered and unlicensed drivers who are over‑represented in crash statistics with QPS investigating the expansion of Automatic Number Plate Recognition technology in police vehicles • Expand training for road policing officers to better detect and deter broader criminal activities, including enhanced drug driving operations across Queensland

Meet the stars of FUCHS WinterNationals Fans of the high octane will have plenty of chances to get up close and personal with the stars of Australian drag racing during the lead-up to the biggest show on the Australian drag racing calendar — Willowbank Raceway’s Fuchs Winternationals (June 4-7, 2015).

Bray to return 12 months on from horror crash The Fuchs Winternationals (4-7 June) will host the comeback of three-time champion Ben Bray, following a headline-making incident at the same event twelve months ago. On Saturday of the 2014 Fuchs Winternationals Bray was undertaking double-duties in the Top Doorslammer and Factory Xtreme brackets, and made national headlines when his FX Nissan Altima race car hit the safety wall of Willowbank Raceway, rolled, and came to stop on its roof during last year’s Fuchs Winternationals. The impact left the 31 year old father of two with rib and back injuries, seeing him restrained in a full body brace for three months. While the Kallangur resident was due to make his comeback at Willowbank’s Santo’s Super 3 Extreme Drag Race event presented by Uplift Cranes and Titan Cranes in April, that event was cancelled due to the extreme weather in South East Queensland that weekend. That cancellation saw the team’s focus turn to Sydney’s Nitro Champs instead, but in an incredible turn of events that event too was cancelled due to poor weather conditions. “It has been a little crazy being ready to make our comeback not once but twice, and having those returns dashed at the last minute, but I am really excited to be getting back on the track,” said Bray, who just weeks ago married his long-time partner Samantha.

When West Australia’s Jodi Racco makes his FUCHS Winternationals debut at Willowbank Raceway (June 4-7) it will be just his second ever professional Pro Stock event and a dream come true following what the 46 year old calls a ‘misspent youth’. “My introduction to drag racing came from what you could call a misspent youth with my older brother Dion, growing up ten minutes away from Ravenswood Raceway it was bound to happen that I would find myself on the race track,” laughed Racco, a Maintenance Superintendent from Waroona who previously raced in Super Stock, making five WA Super Stock finals in a row in his 308 BMSA Commodore, taking 3rd in the 07/08 and 2nd in the 08/09 seasons. “Mum and Dad to this day think I am crazy, but after starting out crewing at the age of 14 I couldn’t walk away. “Now to be travelling across the country to
This year’s event will be the first time Bray has competed since the incident, with private testing set to be scheduled for the racer in preparation for his return to active competition. While the return is hotly anticipated, Bray is cautious about making any big calls as far as performance. “The Fuchs Winternationals is the biggest event of the year for any drag racer in this 1 country, or anywhere outside of North America for that matter, the track is always in great condition and big performances are pretty much guaranteed at that time of year especially,” said Bray. “It is the site of my world record breaking passes in the Altima in 2013 (fastest and quickest ‘doored’ four cylinder car of the time), it is my home track, and while it is also where I had my incident, it will always be my home away from home. “While I am so excited to be coming back and at such a great event at my home track, the ‘comeback’ will and always has been about taking baby steps — getting back in the car, getting the feel for it again, and getting back into the sport I love —I can’t wait!”

Recent publicity has shone the light on Ipswich, and it’s not pretty when it comes to health and obesity according to a new report. Released by the Heart Foundation, the report declares that almost 40% of people in the Ipswich region are classed as obese, and that Ipswich has the fourth highest rate of physical inactivity in Australia. Yes, in the entire nation! Plus almost 70% of people in Ipswich don’t exercise enough to be classed as living a ‘healthy lifestyle’. Oh dear. Well at Ipswich Life, we chose not to run with headlines like “We’re All Fatty Boomsticks!!” and instead we had a Think Tank over several coffees (decaf and skim milk of course). We thought that if there are people out there reading this who want to make a change but don’t know where to start, then let’s help them make that start right now! So we went to some of the best experts on food and exercise in Ipswich, and asked them each for five easy, simple tips which ANYONE can introduce from today, FOR FREE… and it WILL make a difference to your life. Get Abs With a Vacuum: ‘Vaccuming’, as in sucking in your stomach, works more muscles than sit ups, leg raises or planks. Try vacuuming for 10 seconds at a time throughout the day to build a strong tummy. It can be done anywhere, any time. 4. Early Exercise: Exercising before breakfast is proven to burn more body fat. Get up and go for a walk before your brain even knows what’s happening. When you come home, eat a breakfast high in protein and watch the excess weight vanish! 5. No Sauce For You: Try to swap BBQ and Tomato Sauces with spices and salsas. Sauces contain heaps of sugar which turns to fat, while spices heat up your body and turn you into a fat burning furnace!

Eat more fruit: Fruits are functional foods, containing nutrients as well as compounds that help maintain health. Fruits also contain fibre, essential for gut health. That fibre means that the sugars present in fruit, mainly fructose, are absorbed more slowly and are then used for energy rather than fat storage. 2. Walk or cycle for short distances daily: For short distances, walk or cycle instead of driving your car. Walk instead of taking the lift. This will help in burning some of the excess calories in the diet, if not all. Choose the level of regular exercise that is suitable for your age and physical status. 3. Look for the evidence: The internet has many thousands of articles giving the perfect solution for losing weight. The biggest piece of advice is to look for the evidence. If the information looks too good to be true, then it probably is. Talk to the experts or look for information only on reliable sites, such as Australian Institute for Health & Wellness. 4. Have your own veggie and herb garden: Processed foods are devoid of important nutrients. Growth in 2015 Defence Budget Defence has been a big winner in this year’s Federal Budget, with allocations totalling $31.9 billion in 2015–16 and a massive $132.6 billion over the Forward Estimates. The aim is growth in the Defence budget to two per cent of GDP within a decade. The next major milestone is the delivery of the Defence White Paper in August, that will set the framework for our future defence force and defence industry participation. Implementing the First Principles Review of Defence aims to ensure the Department is properly structured and has the right business practices in place to support the Australian Defence Force in the 21st Century. In the past 12 months more than $5 billion has been committed to new Defence capabilities, including: • two additional Boeing C-17A Globemaster III aircraft, bringing the fleet to a total of eight aircraft;
• new and improved personal protective equipment for soldiers, including newgeneration body armour; • state-of-the-art Special Forces vehicles being assembled in Australia. Also in the ‘pipeline’ are P-8A Poseidon maritime surveillance aircraft, MQ-4C Triton unmanned aircraft, F-35A Joint Strike Fighter and new replenishment vessels for the Navy. An investment in the order of $50 billion for Australia’s Future Submarine Programme has also been announced. Finance Minister Mathias Cormann said, “This is the largest Defence procurement investment in Australia’s history and we must get it right.
“The Government is prepared to commit to a long-term investment to make sure this important industry enjoys a future in Australia and critical skills are maintained.” The evolved global nature of terrorism, particularly the threat posed by ISIL, or Daesh, has added a new dimension to Australia’s defence force operations, requiring the ADF to be prepared for expeditionary force operations, as seen recently in the Middle East. The Budget provides additional funding of $752.7 million in 2015-16 and $802.4 million between 2015-16 and 2017-18 to support defence operations. A significant portion of this funding will support operations in Iraq. Pay for Defence force personnel will be increased to two per cent per annum, effective from 12 March 2015, subject to approval by the Defence Force Remuneration Tribunal.

Group Captain John Ward says Defence Housing Australia not for sale but under review farewell after 52 years service The Department of Finance has confirmed that the Government will not proceed with a sale of Defence Housing Australia at this time. However, the Government will review Defence Housing Australia’s accounting, information technology and business reporting systems to improve the transparency of the cost of providing services. There will be no change to the entitlements of Australian Defence Force members. According to DHA Managing Director Peter Howman, the decision not to go ahead with the privatisation of DHA could not have come at a better time for those looking to invest in the property market in Australia and their customers, Defence Force families. “Our investment product has always been low-risk and Governmentbacked,” he said. “Our property portfolio will continue to expand and diversify giving investors more options in the type of property they choose to buy, but still maintaining all the same features that the DHA investment offering is renowned for.’ Mr Howman said that throughout the scoping study process DHA made a commitment to Defence
members and their families that it would not compromise on the homes nor the services that it provides to them in order to meet the obligations of the study. ‘It is testament to the staff at DHA, many of them Defence spouses, who have worked tirelessly to ensure minimal disruption has occurred in the lives of our key customers,’ Mr Howman said. Defence Families Australia, who contributed to an earlier scoping study, also applauded the decision. “It is DFA’s opinion that the assets of DHA are not simply bricks and mortar, another property trust or a transferable income stream; the assets of DHA are the homes and security of ADF members and their families attempting to cope with one of the hardest occupational lifestyles in Australia.”
For Group Captain John Ward, known as ‘Wardo’ for much of his Air Force service, those five decades were part of his life’s ambition. “There were three things I wanted to do: one, I wanted to be a fighter pilot; two, I wanted to travel the world; and three, I wanted to sail single-handed around the world,” he said. Most people these days would know ‘Wardo’ from his tours flying the F-111 with No 1 Squadron and teaching trainees on the F-111 Conversion Course with No 6 Squadron – culminating with an appointment to command No 6 Squadron. As Officer Commanding RAAF Base Tindal, he dealt with support following the 1998 Katherine floods, for which he received the Conspicuous Service Cross. John says that he has never had a bad job in the Air Force, and his attitude carried through during his next 17 years of Air Force service, split between organising flight operations for the Air Force and the Avalon Air Shows and
his appointment as the Base Redevelopment Officer at RAAF Amberley. “I have a passion for Amberley and look from 10 to 20 to 50 years ahead for the Base, not just for today or one project, but for the longer term,” John said. John Ward celebrated his 50 years service on the 14 March 2013. He has now transferred from the Permanent Air Force to the Air Force Reserves so that he can finalise some base redevelopment projects he has underway. After that John will be spending a lot more time with his wife Annie and, who knows, sailing off to somewhere. KC-30A close to full air refuelling capability During its time in Air Force service the KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft has performed admirally, air refuelling a range of aircraft types with its hose-and-drogue system. So far through, refuelling aircraft using the boom system has not been certified due to developmental problems. The Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS) has been fitted to all KC30s delivered to the RAAF but modifications have been required before the ARBS can be used operationally. To date, this has not been a huge problem as the only aircraft in service that need the ARBS delivery are the C-17A Globemaster and E-7A Wedgetail aircraft, both of which have extended unrefuelled range. However, the new F-35A Lightning II stealth fighter, to be brought into service from 2018, will require the ARBS delivery system to extend its range. The P-8A Poseidon long range maritime patrol aircraft will also need air refuelling via the ARBS, and the KC-30A itself requires the boom. The first step meeting this operational milestone occurred recently with a contact between the ARBS on one KC-30A and another KC-30A flying in formation. During a threehour flight from RAAF Base Amberley the crew deployed the 17-metre long ARBS, mounted beneath the tail of the fuselage. Using fly-by-wire controls, the crew made 14 successful contacts between the ARBS and a refuelling receptacle of the other KC-30A, although no fuel was transferred.
Air Vice-Marshal Gavin Turnbull, Air Commander Australia, said air-to-air refuelling required both KC-30As to fly in close formation at more than 500 kilometres per hour, and an altitude of 7,000 metres. “More training flights are being flown to ensure aircrew are experienced with the operation of the ARBS,” Air Vice-Marshal Turnbull said. “We will shortly begin training flights with the KC-30A using its ARBS to refuel the E-7A Wedgetail. “The KC-30A has already been cleared to refuel other aircraft in-flight with its hose-anddrogue refuelling pods, used to great effect in Operation OKRA - air refuelling RAAF Hornets and Super Hornets over Iraq, as well as on Coalition strike aircraft.” “Air refuelling aircraft, like the KC-30A, are always in high demand as they are true force multipliers,” Air Vice-Marshal Turnbull said. “This demand will increase further in the early part of the next decade, as Australia alone will have approximately 100 aircraft that will require use of the ARBS. Each KC-30A can carry more than 100 tonnes of fuel, allowing it to fly out to a range of 1800 kilometres from its home base, remain for four hours and offload 50 tonnes of fuel. Advanced satellite technology trialled onboard a C-17 airlifter Satellite communications and streaming video technology, once confined to specialised aircraft types and ground stations, has been brought onboard an Air Force C-17A global airlift aircraft. The new advanced satellite communication and imagery display system streamed full motion video on large screens located in the cabin of an Air Force C-17. The live video came from a Heron remotely piloted Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) operating 2000km away over Woomera Test Range in South Australia. Group Captain Robert Chipman, the director of a major Defence project codenamed ‘Plan Jericho’, said the system used capabilities that Air Force, Army and Navy currently operate; the difference being that the imagery is displayed in an airborne aircraft cabin environment not just on operator screens. “The networks and systems allows those onboard the aircraft to receive live updates and video of their destination, such as enemy positions or disaster damaged areas, right up to the point of insertion,” said Group Captain Chipman. “The systems may also provide utility in supporting other kinds of operations such as Aeromedical Evacuations, by giving
medical staff on board the ability to video conference with specialists on the ground.” The new system is one outcome of the wider Plan Jericho, that aims to transform Air Force and the wider ADF into a fighting force that capitalises on the high technology systems to be introduced over the next few years. Plan Jericho will look at all aspects of ADF operations and support – systems, command and control, training, simulation, organisational structure, trade groups – to ensure Air Force, Army and Navy jointly operate their new and existing capabilities in the most effective manner. Australians have an ongoing mission to renovate. The rate of home renovations increased 147 per cent from 2010 to 2014 and the renovation shows are TV ratings winners. There are many reasons for renovating but whether you do it to sell a house or make a home more comfortable, you’re doing it for capital improvement. With such low interest rates, if you have been considering a renovation now is a good time to get it done. Before you get started though it’s worth noting that many renovators fail to make the gains they envisioned. This happens because they either spend too much, take too long or they make incorrect assumptions about valuations. These are some things you should know before you break out the hammer. First get an understanding of what adds value. Renovations that are most likely to improve the value usually centre on the kitchen, bathroom and garden. Extra bedrooms, bathrooms, and certain fittings are effective too, but the basics hold true in most markets. Another rule of thumb is your spending ratio: ideally a renovation shouldn’t cost more than 10 per cent of the property’s value. If you go over this basic budget limit, you should be clear that the required uplift in valuation might not be achieved. Also exercise caution in your plans: before going too far, ensure that what you’re proposing has council approval. Remember that in residential areas, the lower the value of the renovation, the more likely it is to be approved. Once you decide that you want to proceed, you’ll need to determine how you will finance the renovation. There are two options that people generally take — equity or a construction loan. Ideally you use equity from your existing property, and some of your cash, to fund the renovation.

When you use equity and cash to finance a renovation, you’d typically refinance your home loan, or use features in your home loan such as redraw, line of credit and offset account, to access the equity. Doing it this way gives you more control over your funds, your timetable and the tradies you use — than a construction loan. However, if accessing equity isn’t an option for you, then you can consider a construction loan. It gives more control to the lender but can still be a suitable solution. It provides certainty to the borrower by writing the loan against the property’s renovated valuation, taking a lot of risk away from the property owner. The lender deals directly with the builder and pays the builder in stages, holding the builder to milestones and a schedule. Interest on a construction loan is only paid on the drawndown stage payments. Neither option is fast — they involve plans, building contracts and valuations. You have to be patient. If you’re unsure, a mortgage broker is a smart step. They can advise which option will best suit your needs and help you select the best deal on your loan. Whatever route you take on your renovation, remember this: the most valuable part is usually the extra time spent doing your homework. Good luck! Modern Motors ‘50 Years of Ford’ Display This display of the Ford Customline was held at Modern Motors on the corner of Gordon and Brisbane streets. Modern Motors was at the site (now part of the Coles complex) from the 1930s until the 1960s. To mark the 50th anniversary, the Modern Motor Company held a special display to celebrate. The sign at the back of the display reads “All his life Henry Ford was a fixer of things”. Henry Ford founded the Ford Motor Company in June 1903. This image forms part of the Whitehead Collection of more than 5000 photographs. This collection was donated by the Whitehead Family to the Ipswich City Council
and is a significant record of the history of Ipswich through the eyes of the photographer Francis Arnold Whitehead from 1883. Twingo named 2015 ‘Design of the Year’ The Renault Twingo has been awarded the title of ‘Design of the Year’ in the 2015 Fleet World Honours at a ceremony held at the Royal Automobile Club in London. Jaguar XE Best Large Car 2015 The Jaguar XE has been named Best Large Car in the 2015 Diesel Car Magazine Awards, beating tough competition from the likes of the BMW 3 Series and Ford Mondeo. Subaru Outback passes 90,000 sales Just weeks after achieving its highest ever monthly sales tally, Subaru’s evergreen All-Wheel Drive Outback has passed the 90,000 cumulative sales mark in Australia. Widely regarded as the original crossover wagon when launched in 1996, Outback is now in its fifth generation, offering a muchexpanded range. March sales of the new generation Model Year 2015 version set a new Outback record, helped by the addition of diesel automatic variants that have brought even more appeal in rural and regional areas, where long-range dirt road driving puts it at a great advantage. Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior, said: “Outback was at the forefront of Subaru’s SUV success story. “It pretty much pioneered the crossover trend that has subsequently been copied by many.” He added: “We have continually refined and improved the Outback range over 19 years, including making it our first mainstream model to have

Ford engineers have been testing left-handdrive versions of the car at the company’s Lara Proving Ground, near Geelong — part of the company’s leading local R&D investment of $300 million in 2015. More than 2,000 Ford customers have now placed deposits for the highly anticipated Mustang Fastback and Convertible, which are being ordered in both the muscle car’s legendary V8 performance version and the first-ever EcoBoost engine that will provide the power of a bigger engine in a smaller, more efficient package. Enthusiasts are lining up to be the first in line as the overwhelming choice has been for the Mustang GT automatic Fastback 5.0-litre V8 engine model, which currently makes up to 42 per cent of total orders. “We are so excited to launch Mustang in Australia and see how people respond to its iconic, magical looks and performance,” said Graeme Whickman, President and CEO, Ford of Australia. “Just like in America, we are seeing great early demand for the V8 GT models. But,
we think the EcoBoost model will be a bigger seller longer term and help sustain sales longer than most performance cars as people see its great combination of performance and fuel economy.” Interest has been high for the car for months so Ford launched a first-of-its-kind early dealer ordering system as the company recently confirmed pricing, specifications and colour options. Indeed, orders started to flood into dealerships across the country with paid deposits well before the car launches later this year. Several Mustang enthusiasts, including members of the various State-based Mustang clubs, have also ordered more than one variant of the famous car. One customer has six orders to his name while a sportscar rental company has placed an order for 20, the biggest single order so far. “The buyer response for the 2015 Ford Mustang has been extraordinary,” said David Blackwood, Dealer Principal of the Bayford Group in Victoria.
