Saving little Giuliana Eating food is something that we all take as a perfectly natural thing, but imagine the problems for a little girl who never learnt to chew, and couldn’t eat solids. Such is the problem for Rennie and Raquel De Petro with their daughter Giuliana. The couple from Springfield Lakes didn’t realise their 21-month old daughter was too small for her age until she was nine months old and after having a high temperature was taken to hospital. “The people at the hospital told us she was quite small for her height and age,” Rennie said. “They ran all kinds of tests, like putting a camera into her lungs, there was a chromosomal test….anything and everything you could think of was done. Yet they were all negative, which is a good thing, but it still didn’t tell us what the problem was.” Guiliana simply can’t chew. Her current diet is made up of a very high calorie-based puree, and previously she was fed by using feeding tubes. “She started to eat a little solids when she was younger and just got sick, she simply wouldn’t eat solids again. We’ve taken her to paediatrician, an occupational therapist, a speech therapist and a dietician but nothing has improved. They put her on a hose feed for three months, but all that was happening was she was bringing milk up.

“She just can’t chew food. It all has to be pureed. Even if you gave her a chocolate it would melt in her hand, she just won’t eat it.” But hope springs eternal, and it was by chance that Rennie’s brother in law saw a story on TV which led to their hopes being lifted overnight. “My brother in law was watching ‘The Project’ and there was a family on there in a similar situation, and that’s where we heard about this clinic in Adelaide called ‘Lively Eaters’. It’s a private clinic where they specialise just in children with this kind of condition. “We went down to Adelaide and had a look a month ago. They said they could help but it was going to take a whole week of treatment. “We’re not getting anywhere at the moment because she’s not thriving and it will hold her back in life. “She started walking late, she’s not talking and over time it will hold her back when she goes to school, so we need to get this fixed. Otherwise she’ll be five but with the mental capacity of someone half her age. To get to this clinic will be great, but it doesn’t come cheap. I’ll sell my house if I have to, a mum and dad will do anything for their kids.”

Hopefully it won’t come to that, as there is an appeal to help get the De Petro family to Adelaide via the ‘You Caring’ website. “We are going there on the 25th May. She’s there for a whole week with all kinds of specialists. We were originally going in July but there was a cancellation so we are going down there a lot sooner. “They have their own paediatrician, speech therapist, occupational therapist and dietician who will be there with her for a whole week,

just working constantly on Giuliana”, Rennie said. “It’s not an instant fix, they’ve already told us that it will be a long road, and there will be things we need to do at home to keep the treatment going.” So far just over $5,000 has been raised, which is only a quarter of what the family needs to cover the huge expense. If you can help in any way, just visit www. youcaring.com and put the word ‘Giuliana’ in the search function.

Kindergarten refurbishment complete Kids at the Bethany Lutheran Kindergarten in Raceview now have a new playground and facilities, the result of a government grant. The Kindy received just under $170,000 in funding to renovate their kitchen and playground facilities under the Renovation and Refurbishment Grant Program for Kindergarten Services (R&R). The Kindy also received money to support the inclusion of three children with disabilities. Mr Berry represented Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek at the official opening. “I think it was a great call by the Parent Advisory Group and staff to suggest waiting several months before holding the playground opening — to give the beautiful plants time to grow and mature,” Mr Berry said. “Bethany Lutheran Kindergarten, as we know it today, opened the doors here in 2006 thanks to the dedication and vision of the parents and leaders of the local Lutheran community.” Mr Neil Schiller, Principal of Bethany Lutheran primary school said the original building was constructed in 1970. The upper level was originally a church and the lower level a kindergarten. Today’s Bethany Lutheran Kindergarten offers children a safe, secure and supportive early learning environment. It is run by Queensland Lutheran

Early Education and is a Ministry of the Ipswich Parish. “What makes Bethany kindy different is its strong links with Bethany Lutheran Primary School and how it encourages children to express their creativity and learn to work with other children — in a Christian environment,” Mr Berry said. “It has been the dedication and commitment of parents and staff that has ensured the kindy’s success since its opening in 2006.” Photo: State Member for Ipswich, Ian Berry, with children of Bethany Lutheran Kindergarten and Paster Ben Hentschke, Director Stacey Bracic and Christine Hartung at the opening of the new facilities.

Why we love an Ipswich Winter… Motor racing excitement

Do you have the need for speed? Then Ipswich is the place to be in winter with the 2014 FUCHS Winternationals, the annual Ipswich Cup horse racing and the Ipswich 360 V8 Supercar round. We love our adrenalin pumping action and these three major events bring thousands of spectators to our great city. Head to discoveripswich.com.au for all the details.

Outdoor adventures

A Queensland summer can be hot, particularly in Ipswich so the cooler days are perfect for exploring the great outdoors and enjoying a bushwalk through one of the region’s nature reserves. If you’re not sure where to start, grab some comfortable hiking shoes, a hat and plenty of water and check out the Discover Ipswich website for information on bushwalking trails.

Indoor adventures

If you would rather avoid the frosty

days, there’s plenty to do indoors to keep you entertained including the Ipswich Art Gallery and Community Gallery and entry is free. Ipswich’s libraries are also a great place to get away from the winter chill and enjoy one of the many activities, or rug up with a book.

Belly-warming food

Ipswich’s coffee shops and restaurant offer an exciting array of food and drink but winter is especially good because we can enjoy the belly-warming soups and steaming teas and coffees our award winning eateries provide. Top of Town is a great place for this.

Calling all photographers

With the 2014 Enviroplan Photographic Competition just around the corner, rolling fog over the Bremer River and the region’s country landscapes are a popular scene for people with a passion for photography. Check out some of the past winners at enviroplanphotocomp.com.au.

INSULATED PATIO KITS

Step away from your computer and get out of the tea room for your lunch break on Wednesday May 21 and drop into Studio 188 for a lunch-time performance by a virtuoso guitarist Tim O’Brien in a Celebration of Acoustic Guitar: Gypsy in my soul. Presented by the Guitar Collective, the performance includes music from Segovia, Django Reinhardt and Robert Johnson. Councillor Charlie Pisasale said the show promised to be captivating and unique with Tim O’Brien’s unique blend of musicianship, style and personality. “Tim O’Brien is a fine Australian guitarist who combines his finger-style magic with his own individual approach to country, folk, classical and pop tunes,” Cr Pisasale said. “Gypsy in my soul promises to be a captivating lunch time event as Tim channels some tremendous performances by Segovia, Django Reinhardt and Robert Johnson.” Segovia was a Spanish guitarist and is remembered for his expressive guitar playing and unique tone, while Django Reinhardt is remembered as one of the greatest gypsy guitar players of all time. Robert Johnson however, was rumoured to have met the Devil at the Crossroad where he exchanged his soul for the gift of a master guitarist. “Tim O’Brien captures the soul of the gypsies, spirit of the masters and essence of guitar in his performance,” Cr Pisasale said. “A lunch time performance with Tim is a rare opportunity in Ipswich, and we know

everyone will enjoy this exciting show.” Tickets for the 40-minute guitar concert include a sandwich or wrap and a soft drink. The show starts at 12.30pm and tickets can be purchased online or at the door. Visit studio188.com.au for more information or phone the box office on 3810 6100. Ipswich City Council has decided to stop accepting these items at refuse centres from May 1st, to meet compliance requirements. “Only low volumes of chemicals were being delivered to the site but the storage of all these chemicals together cause health and safety risks such as fire and explosion.” Cr Bromage said standards and legislation relating to the handling and storage of household chemicals, such as the Workplace Health and Safety Act 2011 and the Australian Dangerous Goods Code, prevented a workable solution. Waste paint will continue to be accepted from residents. Gas bottles would also no longer be accepted at the Rosewood Recycling and Refuse Centre.

The household chemical disposal service will be replaced by a scheduled drop-off day. The Household Hazardous Waste Drop Off Day would be held on July 26 at the Riverview Recycling and Refuse Centre only. From 8am to 4pm on that day only, Ipswich residents will be able to take household chemicals and gas bottles to the Riverview Rd centre free of charge for disposal by council. Cr Bromage said residents should also be aware that they can dispose of gas cylinders at the place of purchase if they do not wish to travel to Riverview or wait for the next drop-off day. Inquiries about the new arrangements can be directed to council on 3810 6666.

Choat’sChat The ultimate human survival tale With Sean Choat MP MEMBER FOR IPSWICH WEST

Many readers will be aware of the recent overhaul of Youth Justice Laws in Queensland. New legislation will ensure these laws better meet our community’s expectations. Under the changes, judges will be able to look at the histories of offenders as juveniles so as to make a more informed decision about appropriate punishment. In the past even some the worst criminals’ histories were hidden from the courts and they were treated as first-time offenders. Judges can now consider past crimes when passing sentence with juvenile detention no longer only a last resort. Judges can now send serious offenders to custody as they see fit. I made it my business to attend the Juvenile Detention Centre recently to see for myself what life is like for teens in custody. I was very impressed by what I saw. All inmates must attend school every day. For many it’s the first time they have had to do so. I was sad to see most struggle with even the most basic maths and English. The teaching and prison staff are very professional and should be congratulated for their efforts with some of our most troubled youth. There is now hope that more young offenders will be pulled into line and while in custody, given access to education and a real chance to rehabilitate I would like to welcome our latest five new police recruits to the Ipswich Region, taking the total number of new recruits in our district to 77. They will soon take up their posts at various local stations. The new officers have completed rigorous training in order to prepare them to protect and serve our community. On behalf of the residents of Ipswich West I wish to extend the warmest of welcomes to the new officers as they start their careers in our community. It’s show season again and hope readers will take the time to support the local shows and have a great time in the process. I am proud to sponsor prizes for various exhibits, particularly the poultry, birds and cattle as well as provide some interesting exhibits myself. Contact my office for details of upcoming local shows.

The escape from the South Pole by Ernest Shackleton’s team in the early part of last century, is widely regarded around the world as the greatest survival story ever told, which makes the fact that Aussie explorer Tim Jarvis recreated it all the more amazing. Tim, an Adelaide-based explorer, was always familiar with the ill-fated expedition in 1914 which is a true tale of survival. British explorer, Ernest Shackleton led his crew to the South Pole in a bid to cross the continent by foot. With his ship, ‘The Endurance’ stuck in pack ice and getting crushed, Shackleton and his men abandonded ship and spent five months living on the ice. When it started to melt in April 1915, Shackleton and his men were forced into lifeboats and rowed to one of the most desolate places on earth, Elephant Island. Taking one boat and a handful of men, Shackleton then set out for the Falkland Islands, an 800 mile trip across the most dangerous oceans on the planet, using only the barest of navigation instruments. Incredibly, after 17 days of battling the elements, they arrived at South Georgia, but were on the wrong side. Shackleton then climbed and crossed a mountain range with barely any equipment, and eventually made it to a whaling station where he got a ship to rescue his men. Not a single man was lost. Tim Jarvis, who has completed several expedititions, wanted to recreate the journey as close to possible as Shackleton did, using the same equipment. Ipswich Life spoke to Tim recently on the release of his book and TV series about the epic journey and began by asking him him how long this had been on his mind. “I think this trip has been on my agenda for many years, over twenty years, but when I was asked by the Shackleton Family if I would attempt this journey, …having Shackleton’s granddaughter ask me to do it six years ago, I had to say yes. “I did have an extra sense of motivation, that’s what tipped me over the edge, having her involvement. It was wonderful to think that she wanted me to do it,” Tim said. “I think its important for someone like me to break new ground, this was all about a boat journey followed by a climb over a rather treacherous mountain with little equipment. “ Trying to keep the trip authentic in 2014, without the temptation of technology, must have been a tough balancing act. “In terms of the boat and technology, most of

the items were identical to what Shackleton had. Food was never a factor, there was plenty of that, but in terms of navigation, it was very basic. “Due to the filming, we had six cameras on board, and that came with 600kg of batteries in the bottom of the boat, whereas Shackelton had 1000kg of rocks in the bottom of the boat to help balance it out and stop it capsizing. It was so uncomfortable to sleep on I can tell you. In terms of safety, we did have the odd thing, we had lifejackets and we had survival suits. But the reality was that if the boat went over you had to act fast. “All the winds and currents come around South America and push you to the east. You’re trying to go North East and you do only that by going North. Typically 75% of the time you get westerly winds, and what we found, like Shackleton did, was that wind blew and pushed you East. The best thing to do is accept you can’t go North and just creep in that direction. I don’t know if that’s explaining it

very well but its all about currents and which way the weather pushes you, which makes the fact that he got to South Georgia even more incredible. “I often think about his mindset. After doing this I have nothing but increased admiration for Shackleton. Landing on South Georgia was not easy, the winds we had made us land somewhere else. “His mindset was generally positive, he had been down in the dumps, lost a ship, faced the prospect of dying on the ice, and here he was trying to get out of there, his positivity was on the up. For us we went from safety to danger, but for him, he was trying to save himself from what had been the end of a tortuous survival.“ Elephant Island sits at the bottom of the planet, a rugged place where no human has ever chosen to live. “Elephant Island is such a desolate place. It’s an island that sticks up like a fang from the ocean. There is practically nowhere to land, its just cliffs or ice. There are only a couple of

The opening of a new pedestrian connection from Springfield Central Train station to the nearby Robelle Domain means better pedestrian access for commuters, shoppers and students. City Infrastructure Committee Chairperson Councillor Cheryl Bromage said Robelle Domain stage two is the development that connects the dots and joins up local facilities including the University of Southern Queensland campus, the forthcoming Mater Hospital, public transport stations and Orion Town Centre with attractive parkland. “This footpath is a $600,000 investment in improving pedestrian access between a major piece of public transport infrastructure, Sir Llewellyn Edwards Drive and the surrounding retail precinct and parklands,” Cr Bromage said. “This provides a quick and direct route between popular local attractions for the public and improved public transport access for USQ students. “This is a vital step as we constantly work to improve and expand this local recreational hub. “As the area grows we are committed to growing our local infrastructure to keep pace.” Local Councillor David Morrison said this walking path has been designed to complement the surrounding green spaces. “The design includes an attractive sandstone treatment of the local creek, revegetation of the general areas with formal and informal planting areas, turf and irrigation,” Cr Morrison said. “Public safety has also been taken into account with the installation of lighting. More and more families are choosing to call Ipswich home, and with the recent arrival of our 180,000th resident this growth is set to continue. “Much of this growth is being driven in the eastern suburbs and this walking path specifically, and Stage Two as a whole adds the kind of infrastructure a growing community needs.”

beaches and Shackleton found them. It’s a miserable place to be. I have to take my hat off to the men left behind, nobody has ever lived there by choice, and there is no human population. It’ testament to their leadership that the men left behind kept it all together in the face of an uncertain future.” Tim made South Georgia and faced the ultimate challenge in crossing the mountain range with little equipment. “I think we got it wrong. We all felt in our minds that if we could make South Georgia against the odds, despite all the good luck, we’d be right. We felt if we could make it there we could get the climb done. But when we got there it was a whole new ball game, and we all underestimated it. We are all a lot more respectful of that climb now.“ Tim hopes that one day there will be a deep sea expedition to find Shackleton’s ship that sank into the depths of the Antarctic. “I live in hope that one day there will be a deep sea expedition to find the ‘Endurance’. I hear that there are plans for it to happen. I know a few teams that are interested. I think we all know where she is, the record keeping was very accurate, and where the ship is laid to rest. It’s just a case of having the technology and finding an icebreaker to do it as you’d have to keep the area free of pack ice. “Antarctica is an awesome place, nothing can prepare you for it. It’s just ocean and space. It’s staggering to see it. I think it’s the enormity of it that makes you look inside yourself, it forces you to do that, and assess what this world is all about. People like me go there to see what they are capable of. “Many of us have the ability to do more than what we do, and it all comes down to choices. “ ‘Shackleton’s Epic’ is out now in bookstores, and the DVD is also available.

WestMAC Open Day - Saturday May 24 Community spirit is a strong theme at West Moreton Anglican College (WestMAC), and lies at the heart of the many learning opportunities its students enjoy. Prospective students and parents will have the opportunity WMAC0703_IpswichLife_Layout 12/05/14 12:36 PM Page May 1 to see this in action at the1 Open Day, Saturday 24

From an internal collegiate spirit across the Junior, Middle and Senior Schools, to an outward spirit of giving back to the wider Ipswich community, students at WestMAC are encouraged to be mindful, respectful and giving in everything they do. Many current and former students and parents regard community spirit and sense of family as distinctive features of the ‘WestMAC experience’ and list these among the College’s strongest attributes. These qualities were well-captured in the 20th Anniversary Commemorative Spirit Video released earlier this year, depicting the authentic sense of ‘family’ that defines the WestMAC community.

This high-energy production was enthusiastically received by the community as reflecting the essence of the WestMAC spirit and illustrating the College motto, “in pursuit of individual excellence”. Watching confident and optimistic students engaged in the many learning opportunities available at the College speaks to the considerable achievements of the past 20 short years, and reveals the potential that exists for an even more exciting and productive future. There are many activities that encourage friendships, support networks and College togetherness across the three sub-schools at WestMAC. Mentoring, playground assistance

and individual buddy arrangements all encourage older students to take an active and meaningful interest in the welfare of younger and newer students. These activities often result in bonds of enduring friendship between students, remembered as highlights of their years of schooling at WestMAC. WestMAC also recognises the importance of serving the wider community as part of students’ education. Community service opportunities allow Middle and Senior School students to reflect on their relative privilege and contribute to the community and develop their own confidence and resilience at the same time. WestMAC students are encouraged to pursue those community service opportunities about which they feel most passionate. Central to the outward community spirit at WestMAC are the Justice Jam Charities. These partnerships are drawn from a diverse

group of charities and community groups. Throughout the school year, each House group supports a particular charity, chosen for its significance to the local region, or which supports disadvantaged students at schools near and far. The 2014 charities are: the Chumkriel Language School in Cambodia, the Wujal Wujal Community Development Project in the Daintree, Rosie’s Charity for the Homeless, Youngcare, and Everyday Heroes at the Royal Brisbane Children’s Hospital. More than $25,000 per year in donations is raised by students for their Justice Jam charities. This year, Justice Jam Day will take place on 25 June, celebrating all the social justice work with which students and families are involved. This celebration extends beyond WestMAC’s partnership charities to include social action undertaken by individual students and families of their own volition. This will be the third year of Justice Jam Day at WestMAC, and the event continues to go from strength to strength. The WestMAC spirit will be proudly on display at our Open Day on Saturday 24 May, from 10.30am to 3pm. Prospective parents and students are encouraged to attend what promises to be a fun day out for the whole family with many activities including sporting matches and performances from talented Dance and Music students. Guided tours of the beautiful 38 hectare campus and College Farm are always a highlight and will run continuously throughout the day. More information about Open Day can be found on the College website – www.wmac.com.au

Nominate for Cultural Diversity Awards

Author tells her story at ‘Paper Tales’

Applications are now open for the Premier’s Queensland Cultural Diversity Awards which recognise individuals and organisations who have contributed to greater understanding and acceptance of Queensland’s cultural diversity.

An insight into what happens when a woman receives a diagnosis of breast cancer will be delivered this week as part of Ipswich Libraries’ Paper Tales series.

State Member for Ipswich, Ian Berry encourages residents of Ipswich to nominate themselves or someone they know for this year’s Awards. “This is a great opportunity to recognise contributions and achievements of individuals and organisations that support strong diverse communities,” Mr Berry said. “There are thirteen award categories this year which will recognise the broad variety of work and achievements that are indicative of our state’s cultural diversity.” Nominations are invited in these categories: • Small Business (fewer than 20 employees) • Business (20 or more employees) • Entrepreneur • Language Independence • Education and Training • Public Sector • Outstanding Community Organisation (Greater Brisbane) • Outstanding Community Organisation (Regional) • Communications and Media Award • Outstanding Volunteer (Greater Brisbane) • Outstanding Volunteer (Regional) • Young Cultural Diversity Ambassador (25 years or under)

• Cultural Diversity Ambassador Mr Berry said the Awards honour the commitment and effort from the many people who daily help make Queensland the diverse and dynamic place it is to live, work and raise a family. “We want to recognise people who understand that cultural diversity enriches our lives in all areas, and communicate this positive message as role models in our multicultural society,” he said. Nominations close on Monday, 16 June. Winners will be announced during Queensland Cultural Diversity Week being celebrated statewide from 30 August-7 September. For more information and nomination forms visit: www.datsima.qld.gov.au/ culturaldiversity

Ipswich City Council Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said Brisbane-based author Bronwyn Hope would be the next guest speaker in the Paper Tales Meet the Author series. “Ms Hope, the author of The Breast is History: An Intimate Memoir of Breast Cancer, will be visiting Ipswich from 10.30am this Tuesday, May 20, to present a free talk in the Barry Jones auditorium,” Cr Pahlke said. “I want to encourage Ipswich residents to take this opportunity to hear Ms Hope’s message.” In her book, the mother-of-two has faithfully detailed what happens when a woman receives a diagnosis of breast cancer. Combining autobiography, philosophy and humour, this provides a powerful reference for women have or have had breast cancer, their family and supporters. Part proceeds from the sale of this book will help raise funds for cancer research. Born in Sri Lanka to parents of mixed Sinhalese, Scottish and Belgian heritage, Ms Hope is also a public relations consultant who currently runs a small business from home, specialising in the health and medical sector. Redbank Motorway Estate is set to become one of south east Queensland’s leading distribution and logistics hubs following the opening of a new heavy vehicle overpass at Redbank. Work has already begun on the construction of a new $21 million transport and logistics facility by Northline, which is set to replace their facility at Pinkenba. It will be located within the Goodman Group’s $350 million Redbank Motorway Estate, a new 62 hectare industrial development site with direct access to the Ipswich Motorway via the new Redbank Link Bridge. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the bridge was built at the time of the Ipswich Motorway upgrade to take advantage of construction economies of scale, an expert workforce and to minimise rail line closures. “The connection between Monash Road and Ipswich Motorway is the final piece of the puzzle and starts the next phase of jobs growth in Ipswich. “The new overpass provides additional road links to allow businesses and employment to grow while minimising impacts on nearby residential areas. “Redbank Motorway Estate currently provides 220 construction jobs and when fully developed up to 2,300 full-time job would become available,” Cr Pisasale said. Division 2 Councillor Paul Tully said in October 2013, leading

international third party logistics provider DB Schenker was announced as the first major logistics company to make a commitment to the estate being developed by Goodman Group. “Joining DB Schenker will be leading transport and logistics provider, Northline which has committed to a new 12,500 square metre distribution centre,” Cr Tully said. “This is tremendous news for job seekers and a huge vote of confidence in the future of Ipswich in the development of our region.” Northline Chief Executive Officer Craige Whitton said the new Brisbane facility represents the second multi-million dollar investment by the company in just over a year in enhancing its national distribution network. “Queensland is a key market for the company and this investment reflects our commitment to the state and allows us to further improve our service offering in the region. The new facility will provide more than 12,500 square metres of warehousing and undercover freight operations space including an all-weather loading/unloading breezeway and the company’s Queensland state office.

Talking Beer WITH ANTHONY AT THE YAMANTO TAVERN

Lavoob Lager - truly local A truly local beer this Lager gains its roots from the old Booval Brewing Company. It is inspired by the beer once produced in; and tapped all around the Ipswich CBD. Brewed by local Peak Crossing resident and Brewer of 4 Hearts Pale Ale, Wade Curtis took his inspiration from the style and the hop variety that was used when the brewery opened in June of 1898. The brewery was decommissioned and the 35 foot tower was sent to Toowoomba leaving the Booval area, assume ably dry. But now we have brought it back. For the taste, this is a true lager with a full on malt flavour which steps away from all the “regular” lagers that are on the “popular” market. It asks more of you then to just throw it back on a warm day

inviting you to taste the subtle citrus notes and the odd but refreshing finish which leaves you asking “what is that?” after every sip. This beer receives most of its flavour from the hop, which not many people will have tasted, coming from the old recipe the hop is scarcely used and from the brewers point of view, hard to find. This is an easy and sessional beer which is sure to get us through the end of summer and ready for all the tastes that are sure to come from the cooler months, at a reasonable 5.0% alcohol content its one you will be able to enjoy as much as you like.

What I love about Ipswich We asked our Facebookers what they loved about Ipswich and the response was huge! Congrats Fiona R from Churchill, we loved your answers and a double movie pass is on its way! 1. Queens Park It’s great for the family playground, animal and Japanese gardens all free! 2. Twilight Markets Fantastic products, and interesting people. 3. Ipswich Hospital Foundation Sponsoring fun fitness classes and making them affordable for everyone.

80’s kids rejoice! Steven Spielberg is bringing Roald Dahl’s famous children’s book The BFG to the big screens! Dahl first published the book in 1982 and it has since become an animated flick and a stageplay — but Spielberg is sure to introduce it to a whole new audience and a whole new range of visual effects. He’s teamed up with E.T. The Extraterrestrial screenwriter Melissa Mathison to pen the script. Here’s a couple of names you probably haven’t heard for a while: Rockers Smashing Pumpkins are teaming up with Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee for their ninth studio album. Lee is apparently laying down the drums for ALL tracks on their upcoming album ‘Monument To An Elegy’.

4. Brisbane Street Coffee Shops & Restaurants We now all have such a great selection to choose from! YUM. 5. Ipswich People I love the way Ipswich rallies together whenever there’s a problem or a disaster. There is always someone ready to help out or lend a hand. It’s been confirmed, one of the characters of The Simpsons (above) will be killed off. Producers have confirmed that in Season 26 one of our favourites will die — but they’ve not reveal who yet. We do however, have a few clues — The character is voiced by someone who won an Emmy for their work, and it’s not Hank Azaria. Let the guessing game begin!

If you work in a bar, better cross your fingers that Justin Timberlake stops into your local waterhole when he visits Australia later this year. Staff at a bar in Germany were thrilled to discover he had left them a $AU4235 tip on a recent visit!

Aussie gal Rebel Wilson has scored another hot Hollywood role — She’s just been cast as the lead in a remake of 80’s flick Private Benjamin. Wilson will take the role original played by Goldie Hawn in the 80s. And speaking of reboots — A Lethal Weapon remake could be on the cards — and Chris Hemsworth is the name rumoured to be attached to it. Fast and The Furious director Justin Lim is also attached to the project. The last Lethal Weapon movie was released in 1998. The first in 1987. 80’s heartthrob Rick Springfield (below) has announced his very first Aussie headlining tour. Although he has performed down under before, it’s always been as part of a collaboration — like the Countdown tour. He performs in Brisbane Oct 9 and on the Gold Coast Oct 10.

After a career spanning 5 decades, 67 year old Sally Field finally received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. One of her first television appearances was starring in the television show “The Flying Nun” and Field has more recently been nominated for an Oscar for her work in Steven Spielberg’s historical drama ‘Lincoln’, and has recently reprised her role as Aunt May in the Amazing Spiderman series.

The producers of this year’s Oscars Craig Zadan and Neil Meron have been confirmed again for 2015 — which will be the 3rd year running they have been in charge of the production. Fingers crossed Ellen Degeneres will also return as host. The final instalment of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy has been renamed. It was previously set to be released as ‘The Hobbit: There and Back Again’ but apparently after viewing the final edit of the film Jackson the film has been renamed: ‘The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies’. Jackson (below) said: ‘There and Back Again’ felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film. But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced after all, Bilbo has already arrived there in the `Desolation of Smaug’.

And after long speculation, Disney have finally announced the cast for the next Star Wars instalment. OUTNABOUT Alice Torr takes to the skies DEFENCE

The Ipswich Chamber of Commerce held their ‘After Five’ function at the Ipswich Civic Centre, giving business owners a chance to network and mingle. Ipswich Life was there to capture some of the big smiles on show. Business is booming in Ipswich. Here’s proof…

Alice Torr knew from the age of 12 that she wanted to fly, and through sheer hard work she earned her wings in the Air Force. Flight Lieutenant Torr, based at RAAF Amberley, has travelled extensively in her career, flying all over the nation and in parts of Papua New Guinea as one of the last pilots of the famous Caribou, clocking up over 1000 hours at the helm up until the aircraft was retired in 2009. “I had always planned to be a pilot, I was about 12 when I made that decision,” said Alice (or as she prefers, ‘Ali’). “At 14 I joined the Air Force cadets to keep interested, plus so I could learn all about aviation and how the Defence Force operated. I met lots of kids with the same interests as me. “I continued to work hard at school as I wasn’t a natural at study. To be a pilot, it’s helpful if you are good at physics and maths, which I’m not. So I had to work hard.” Ali joined the RAAF when she was 19, and moved to Canberra to begin her studies at the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA). “Since I’d studied engineering at Griffith University on the Gold Coast, I was able to use my time at ADFA well, and I studied for a year before going to pilot school. “I then went to Tamworth for six months, then over to RAAF Pearce in Western Australia. So it took me three years to get my wings. “As a pilot, you are constantly studying, but once you get your wings you then get streamed out to certain type of aircraft. You do have some say in where you go, but in the end the RAAF decides on your placement. “I spent four years flying the Caribou. If you are lucky and work hard you get to command an aircraft. When the Caribou was retired, I was moved to the C-17s. Going to them was like learning to fly all over again. “I was literally going from a stick and rudder aircraft to this highly automated, four-engine heavy lifter aircraft. It’s a very different type of flying. To be honest it’s like going from a Corolla to a Monster Truck!” Ali loves her job, and can’t imagine doing anything else. “It’s hard to say what I love most about being a pilot. I guess I love the variation in my job,” Ali said. “One day I’m flying at low level across the ocean watching the sunset, the next day I’m flying using night goggles. Then I

could be flying troops overseas, or doing a humanitarian drop, it’s just so varied. I don’t mind all the study, it keeps my mind active and I just love being up the front of the aircraft. “I don’t think of it as having all that responsibility, being a pilot…I see it more as a confidence in your ability. I learnt early that I needed to have that confidence, and believe in what I can do. You have to show people that you have the ability to be a pilot. “There are always time frames and things you need to do to keep your wings. I have to do a certain amount of take-offs, or landings plus clock up flight hours. You have to be up to date on industry standards and changes in aviation.” So what advice would Ali have for any girls out there still at school and considering a career in the RAAF? “I’d say to any young girls out there that they should consider it as a career. My advice is to at least have a look, ask some questions. There are so many jobs in the ADF. “It’s a guaranteed job, with guaranteed pay, and in today’s society that’s a big thing. You get excellent facilities, mateship, good healthcare, accommodation, excellent dental, incredible friendships and best of all the training is second to none. “

Homes needed for record breaking puppies BONUS

$500

EFTPOS CARD WITH NEW HOME LOANS^

A four year old Belgian Malinois named Osha has broken the record books at RAAF Amberley, giving birth to 17 puppies recently and is setting new standards for the Military Working Dog (MWD) Breeding Program. Osha comes from a long line of breeding dogs, as her mother and sister had previously delivered big litters with thirteen and fourteen pups respectively. With a goal of 80 puppies a year, the facility has six girls and eleven boy puppies, accounting for 20% of the annual target, and Osha has smashed the previous record of pups born in one litter. The record for largest number of pups born in one litter was set in 2004 when a Bull Mastiff in Cambridge England gave birth to 24 puppies, of which 20 survived. It is believed Osha has set an Australian record for live births, and has equalled a world Military Working Dog record which was held by a United States Department of Defence dog. Osha was artificially inseminated with frozen sperm from a non-military dog who died last year. Breeding manager Stephen Cannon (pictured above) gave up most of his Easter to assist in the labour, which went over more than fourteen hours. “Sometimes we lose pups, that’s out of our control, we do our best to get them across the line. But pups have to meet you halfway, and all seventeen of these pups have done that, its been a great three weeks working with them,” Stephen said. “Mum isn’t keeping them as clean as we’d like but with so many that’s understandable, so we get in there and help keep them clean. “I was monitoring her from home on my computer, and I notice she was going in labour so I raced back to the base. After fourteen and a half hours she’d had sixteen, and I was beat. I went home to have a sleep and I woke up to a text saying there was another one!” The facility breeds dogs for the entire Air

Force and decided in recent years to breed quality working line dogs themselves, due to the lack of quality donors and breeding stock. The decision is already delivering excellent benefits. With one hundred and sixty six kennels on the base, it currently houses a hundred and five dogs who undergo training for months on end before the animals are set to work around all over the country. Mum and all the pups are doing well, but now the focus is switching to finding foster homes in Ipswich that can assist with the Puppy Foster Care program. The Weekend Home Stay program is designed for individuals or families to takea pup home for a weekend. It’s a good opportunity for the pups to have some individual time with new people and get them away from the kennel environment for a couple of days. Pups between 8-12 weeks are in your care for only three nights, and the level of interaction with the pup is expected to be high to maximize human contact. All equipment is provided including lead, collar, food bowl, water, food and travel crate, plus instructions. The goal is get all 17 pups out on the program, ideally at the same time, so they are all at the same level of ability and human interaction, without having to leave a few behind. From the age of 12 weeks to 7 months of age, the pups are looking to be placed in full time foster care. Anyone interested in helping with the program can call 07 5461 3762 or email Stephen.cannon@defence.gov.au. PROPERTY & FINANCE

BY MARK BOURIS

Take my advice on financial security It’s easy to look at a financial system and ask the government to make it fair. But what if our system was fair? What if the laws and regulations provided for an even playing field so everyone had an opportunity to build financial security for their family and create wealth? Many people will tell you that Australia is indeed a land of equal opportunity. If this is the case the responsibility is not only on not only on the government to ensure we build private wealth, but on ourselves. Lately I’ve written about the need for financial education in our schools, but we also have to educate ourselves as adults. Among other things, I’d like to see more people using advisers to make financial decisions. Most working-age Australians do not use advisers, even though they are contributing to a mandatory superannuation system. Research over the years shows us that no more than 40 per cent of Australians use financial advisers on more than a one-off basis. Individuals really should carry the responsibility of funding their own retirements. Advisers usually produce greater wealth for clients. KPMG Econtech’s 2009 survey found that Australians with advisers would save more than $1500 per year more than those without

advisers. A person with an adviser, if they started at age 30, would be at least $90,000 better off by age 65 than a person who was not advised. Those with an adviser had more life insurance and Total & Permanent Disablement insurance than those without an adviser. The Australian Securities & Investments Commission (ASIC) goes further. In its 2010 report into financial advisers, ASIC says access to quality financial advice is part of “confident and informed participation by Australians in the financial system.” There have been a few ideas floated on how to lift the use of financial advisers. One could be to make financial adviser fees tax deductible to a certain level. Another allowed advisers to give low-cost, basic advice.. Many fund managers have tried to introduce their members to the concept of advice. My company is going one step further by launching an “Ask My Advice” Day in which our branches will open their doors for the day so anyone can come in and ask their questions and get some advice for free. It’s in response to people telling me that they don’t take advice because of deep-seated concerns about cost, scale, mistrust and access, and the lack of financial literacy. Your brand new home at Sovereign Pocket awaits Stockland is setting a benchmark for affordable new home solutions at its popular Sovereign Pocket community at Deebing Heights, offering buyers the choice to build their own home or purchase a ready-made product. Sovereign Pocket is located in the fast-growing western corridor and provides easy access to transport, local schools, RAAF Amberley and all the facilities of central Ipswich. Stockland Regional Manager, David Laner, said the community had struck a chord with buyers who were impressed by the green, open surroundings and the innovative and affordable homes on display. “The display homes are designed to suit today’s lifestyles and incorporate energy and water efficient features that will save the home buyer money,” said Mr Laner. One of the popular display homes on show at the community is the four-bedroom Jasper 242 by Hallmark Homes. The design features two bathrooms, a double garage, a study nook and two covered outdoor areas. The contemporary home, which also offers a choice of living spaces to suit the whole family’s needs, is on display at Miskin Way. Meanwhile, the release of ready-made homes which have recently been unveiled at Sovereign Pocket have also been creating a

flurry of interest. The four-home project being undertaken by Stockland and Hallmark Homes is aimed at meeting the needs of a growing number of buyers looking for brand new completed homes. Mr Laner said the turn-key packages ensured buyers only had one contract to sign and that they did not have to wait as long to move in as those building a new home from scratch. The contemporary three-bedroom homes are priced from $319,190, with yards fully fenced and landscaped. Sovereign Pocket, which will eventually have around 700 homes, is located in a natural, open setting with wide streets and kilometres of walking and bike paths. Its 5,000 square metre Central Park, which will be at the heart of the community, is expected to be open by the end of the year. Mazda maintains strong sales in 2014 With 7,000 new car, SUV and utility sales in April, Mazda has continued its best-ever start to a calendar year. In the first four months of 2014, Mazda has sold a record 34,785 vehicles, according to VFACTS figures released today. Overall sales are up 0.6 per cent Year-To-Date (YTD) for a 10 per cent market share. This is set against a backdrop of a market that has declined by 3.1 per cent. Mazda remains one of Australia’s top three manufacturers and is still the country’s leading full-line importer. Leading the way was AllNew Mazda3 with 3,057 sales last month – falling just short of an April record. With 15,174 retails YTD, Mazda3 remains the country’s most popular car. Mazda3’s excellent balance of the latest technology and exceptional styling has hit the mark with Australian compact car buyers. While supply is tight on some models, Mazda dealers appear to be managing the strong demand very well. CX-5 had its best April on record with 1,543

of the popular mid-sized SUVs finding homes. It tops its segment and is the number one selling SUV in Australia. BT-50 also enjoyed a strong month with 1,001 utility sales in April. Last month was BT50’s second best April month and like Mazda3, it too narrowly missed posting an April record. In support, Mazda2 maintained its position as the country’s best selling light car with 804 April sales and the stylish Mazda6 remains the favourite mid-sized import with 384 retails. Subaru WRX chalks up record sales Subaru’s new generation WRX family achieved alltime record sales of 691 in April, according to official VFACTS sales figures.

The figure includes 141 WRX STI variants, launched in late April. This represents a 466.4 per cent increase over the same month last year and smashes a 15-year record of 469, established in 1999, at the height of the dotcom boom, when first generation WRX was creating a buzz. Nick Senior, Managing Director, Subaru Australia, said: “This is a fantastic response and the most encouraging aspect is the high level of conquest business. “New WRX and WRX STI are attracting new buyers to Subaru with their great mix of performance, comfort, value-for-money, specification and Subaru’s trademark reliability. “We’re getting especially strong demand for the sports Lineartronic Continuously Variable Transmission WRX, running higher than anticipated at more than 50 per cent of orders.” Mr Senior said some WRX variants are now on back-order to August. New WRX and WRX STI drove total Subaru sales in April to 2903, a 13.7 per cent increase on April last year in a market that was down 5.2 per cent for the month.
