TextMiddle Bogan screens Thursday nights Upper on ABC or catch up on www.abc.net.au/iview
Not your average Bogan Let’s be honest, we love the idea of Bogans. They are enshrined in Australian culture along with Vegemite, streakers at the footy, barbies on Grand Final day and “tell him he’s dreaming!” Viewers will be pleased to hear that Australia’s favourite Bogans are returning to ABC with a second series of ‘Upper Middle Bogan’, now screening on ABC. If you missed the first series, the show is about Bess, a middle class nurse who suddenly finds out she was adopted. On finding her real parents she discovers that they are just a little bit Bogan... just a little. Michala Banas plays the role of Amber, a single mum who discovers she had a big sister, and along with co-stars like Glenn Robbins and Dave Thornton, she loves the show to bits. She’s previously appeared in ‘Winners and Losers’, ‘Home & Away’, ‘Beaconsfield’, and also recently as a regular winner on ‘Have You Been Paying Attention’, but says her heart belongs with ‘Upper Middle Bogan’. In fact, Michala was on the bus home when she spoke with Ipswich Life. How Aussie can you get? “You never know in TV whether something is going to go to a second series. Things like budgets are out of your hands but we all felt that people would like the show, so we did feel there was a second series there,” Michala said. “People are asking me if there will be a third series, as they love it that much! “I would do the show forever to be honest. It is cast beautifully and the crew make the environment so enjoyable. We just kept getting the balance right.” Michala starred in her first role at just 18 months old, which means she technically has had a
career of over 30 years. Originally, she went for the lead role in the show, until she realised that she was better suited to the character of Amber. “I was in a political party ad in New Zealand, just playing with some blocks, and I believe I did it very well,” Michala said laughing. “I originally auditioned for the character of Bess (which went to Annie Maynard), and I said to them I really think that I should go for Amber. “They didn’t see me, and I was in of all places Paris for the first time, and I got a message from my agent (two months later), and they asked me to do a tape as Amber and send it through. “For me, this character came off the page, and I can’t take credit for it. It’s great writing that makes or breaks shows these days, and that’s why we only do eight episodes a season, it’s quality over quantity. “There’s not too much improvisation on set, most of it is written by Wayne Hope and Robyn Butler, as if there is any improv its at the end, Sometimes we just keep rolling, but the hardest thing for me is trying not to laugh. People like Glen Robbins are so funny on set. Maybe that’s why I look so angry… I’m trying not to laugh all the time! “I do look angry a lot don’t I? I don’t look like that in real life.
I hope! She’s very passionate, is Amber. I think I channel a lot of serious angst. That’s the face I just end up with then I think of her.” So as one of the nation’s most famous fictional Bogan families, how does Michala feel about the uniquely Australian stereotype? “I think we can all relate to Bogans. With our show if you hadn’t seen it before you think it would be poking fun at bogans, but that’s not the case. “I think what makes it so successful is that characters are so relatable in reality. There is a warmth about it. Do we really need these silly labels? What makes a ‘bogan’? “I think this shows that much as we like to put labels on each other, we’re all just trying to make our way through life. Without sounding too spiritual, it’s can be a sentimental show at times, and that surprised many people. If Amber is a bogan, then I’m a bogan! “You kind of hope that everyone is going to love the show as much as we loved making it,” Michala said. “It’s funny that when you work on a show you’re not sure if you want to watch it got to air, but I did want to watch it, and I love it!”

Advertising guru shares his passion Best known for his work in the advertising industry, which led to a role on the popular ‘Gruen’ shows on ABC, Russell Howcroft is now Executive General Manager of Network Ten, managing operations in Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth. Russell is the last person you think would have time to do another TV show, but the temptation proved too much, as he embarks the second season of Ten’s ‘Recipe to Riches’. Over eight weeks, each episode begins with three contestants who have an idea for a product. They have to consider the recipe, the packaging, the marketing and when the winner is announced, the product is on
sale the very next day in each of the 890 Woolworths supermarkets around the nation. That’s one doozy of a logistical nightmare! The first question one has to asked Howcroft is how he manages to watch TV at night. With a long career in advertising and now television management, it must be hard to switch off. “No, I don’t switch off to be honest”, Russel said. “Thing is with me I like to watch the ads as well as the shows. I have to do other things to relax… I play tennis, or go to the football, which isn’t very relaxing as I barrack for Melbourne, and we don’t often win.” Russel seems a perfect fit for this show, as it is a concept close to his heart, and that is all about bringing ideas to fruition. “All the years I did on ‘Gruen’ gave me more of a passion for the business and the importance of advertising in the society that we live in. The role that advertising plays is a hugely important part of the mass consumer world. “I don’t know whether it matters if people care or underestimate advertising, but there are a lot of people in the industry working hard to increase awareness of their clients businesses, because at the end of the day they are creating growth. “This is why I love ‘Recipe To Riches’, its all about the ‘riches’, not so much the ‘recipe’. Yes the products have to be good, they have to deliver… otherwise you won’t be in business for long. “It’s all about how you market the product. What do you call it? How do you price it? How do you design the packaging? These are the elements that make the difference on the supermarket shelves. That’s how you use marketing to turn a home-grown recipe into a success.” It is a well-known fact that supermarkets use little tricks to make you feel comfortable in their stores. From the music they play, to the layout of the store, to having certain products at eye level… they put a lot of effort into making us all spend more without even realising it, and Russel is fully aware of some of the industry practices. “Often during the show we take contestants down supermarket aisles, and there are scenes when I’m with a contestant and I show them what their competitors are doing. What colours are they using? Why is it in this particular spot in the supermarket? It’s about coaching them in naming and packaging with the goal at the end of the day… of making a sale.
“I thought last years winner (‘Chocorn’ – a mix of popcorn and choc-tops in one box) was a brilliant idea. It it so obvious! Isn’t it interesting when you see something and you think ‘what a great idea’. It’s simple, tastes great, good name, fantastic packaging… good on Garth for coming up with that. “There’s an enormous effort to get it on the shelves the day after the winner airs. I have to give respect to Woolworths for this. Such an incredible business machine, that gets behind these ideas and make it happen. They work
out how to create it on a large scale, get the packaging to happen and then organise the distribution to get it on the shelves the very next day. It’s an amazing machine.” So does Russel, a man who loves ideas, subscribe to the thought that you just need ONE good idea to be a success? “One idea? No I don’t. Ideas aren’t worth anything until they are made. The skill is the creation of the idea, not the idea itself.“ ‘Recipes to Riches’ Season 2 starts this week on Network Ten.

Enviroplan entries judged The Enviroplan Photographic Competition just gets bigger and bigger every year, with the 2014 contest resulting in more than 1100 entries received across nine categories. Grace Yu from USQ along with Emma and Greg Harm from Tangible Media, are the official judges of the 2014 Ipswich Enviroplan Photographic Competition, and have some very tough decisions to make. The annual competition, offering a prize pool of more than $5000 and launched in June, encouraged people across Ipswich taking their camera out to photograph the environment. Councillor Heather Morrow said the quality of photographs submitted for judging show how much pride residents have in our local ecology. “There are so many entries that are creative, attractive and reveal some surprising aspects of our local wildlife and outdoor spaces,” Cr Morrow said. “Every year we are refining the categories in order to ensure the competition is accessible to photographers of every skill level and to focus on areas of particular beauty. “This year we have increased the number of categories and introduced a special category for primary school students. Winners will be featured in the annual Enviroplan calendar which is distributed across South-East Queensland. The Enviroplan calendar was recently awarded
best publication in the inaugural ‘Promoting a Sustainable Brand’ category at the 2014 Australian Catalogue Awards. Judge Emma Harm said that entries this year are at a very high standard right across the board, from primary school entries to adults. “We look for a combination of things” Emma said. “Technique, composition and things like perspective are all important when it comes to taking a good photo. “With the students we wanted to make sure we were encouraging by picking a range of different techniques, in the hope we can promote photography to students. Anyone can take a photo, but there are elements that make a great shot. For example, seeing patterns in nature, or colours, looking at minute details… these are the elements that make a photographer. “I was very impressed with the amateur entries, especially the primary school categories, some high quality shots really stood out. You could easily have put some in the adult category, you’d never know they were taken by students,” Emma added. The Enviroplan winners will appear in the next edition of Ipswich Life.

Wanted: used walking aids The call has gone out from North Ipswich Rotary for unwanted crutches, walking sticks, walking frames and wheelchairs, needed to help hundreds of people with polio. West Moreton Hospital & Health Service and Rotary have joined forces to collect walking aids for people with polio in neighbouring Third World countries as part of a ‘Regain Mobility’ program. The mobility aids will be repaired and refurbished by Ipswich Men’s Shed and sent to countries such as Papua New Guinea, Pacific Islands, East Timor and Indonesia, where hundreds of polio survivors have no access to walking aids. Russell Bachmann, President of Ipswich North Rotary Club said that without walking aids polio survivors were left with severe mobility problems but that a set of crutches would significantly improve their quality of life. “These walking aids will make it easier for polio survivors to participate and literally move within their community,” said Mr Bachmann. Rotary has reduced polio cases by 99% worldwide by providing free immunisation through the ‘Polio Plus’ and ‘End Polio Now’
programs. Currently, there are only three countries where polio is still a threat — Afghanistan, Nigeria and Pakistan. Walking aids, in any condition, can be donated to the Physiotherapy Department, at any of the West Moreton Hospital and Health Service hospitals between 8.30 am and 4.00 pm, Monday to Friday. The Physiotherapy Department, Ipswich Hospital is located near the Main Entrance on Chelmsford Ave. Walking aids can also be donated to Physiotherapy Departments at Boonah, Esk, Gatton and Laidley Hospitals. For more information on the collection of mobility aids contact the Physiotherapy Department, on telephone 3810 1355. Caption: Russell Bachmann from North Ipswich Rotary and David Smith, Director of Physiotherapy at West Moreton Hospital & Health Service with some of the walking aids that can be donated, along with wheelchairs and other such devices.

I was pleased to have the Shadow Attorney-General and Shadow Minister for the Arts, Hon Mark Dreyfus QC MP visit Ipswich and the Somerset region last week, when we met with local Indigenous Justice Group Five Bridges to discuss the excellent ongoing work they’re doing in our community, and the issues in continuing that service. We also visited the Somerset Region to meet ALP Branch members, and to visit the site of the soon-to-be Toogoolawah Arts Precinct. Minister Dreyfus was impressed with the the project, funded by the former Federal Labor government for $500,000 through the Regional Development Australia Fund. This project will boost the economy in the area once it’s complete. That boost is already occurring with almost all of the 25 people employed to complete the project being Somerset region locals. Other local projects now completed and funded through the former Federal Labor government’s Better Regions, Regional Development Australia and Regional funds include: Robelle Domain Parklands; Ipswich Civic Centre Upgrade; Studio 188; Fernvale Indoor Sports Centre; Somerset Civic Centre, North Ipswich Corporate Centre and Riverheart Parklands. These projects have made Ipswich and the Somerset region more liveable, and I am proud to have been able to deliver them. Applications have recently opened for the Federal government’s National Stronger Regions Fund, and I’m calling on the Ipswich City Council, the Somerset Region Council, NGOs and other local organisations to apply for this funding. I’m happy to discuss any ideas for local projects and give my support and advocacy where possible. My office can be contacted on 3201 5300 or email me at Shayne.Neumann.MP@aph. gov.au to make a time. Kind regards Shayne Neumann, MP

Annie Peterson has been involved with Women in Voice from the very beginning in 1993, witnessing it growing from strength to strength, and attracting such a vast array of talent over the years. She worked at the café where it all began, making coffee at the Sitting Duck Café back in 1993. Now, 21 years later, the show is hitting the road. “Our goal all along with taking the show outside Brisbane was that we didn’t want to just turn up and go away, we wanted to involve a local on the tour, so we auditioned someone in each region. “The winner in Ipswich was Samara Marinelli who will join us on stage. I think it will help to build the reputation of the show, which is already well known in Brisbane, but also around the whole South East of Queensland. Women in Voice is a showcase of beautiful voices and performers. It’s not a blues show, or a rock show…this cast has classical backgrounds, rock backgrounds, the audience gets to enjoy a whole variety of music.
Women in Voice 2014 The 2014 line-up features the hilarious Carita Farrer, gospel queen Lil’ Fi, music theatre favorite Liz Buchanan and crossover diva, Bethan Ellsmore. Plus, in the spirit of nurturing new talent, they will be joined by Ipswich singer Samara Marinelli, who was selected by audition and will work with the Women in Voice team to ‘get their act together’ and join the gals on stage. ‘Women in Voice’ is on at the Ipswich Civic Centre for one night only on Sunday November 2 at 7pm. Tickets online at ipswichciviccentre.com.au or at the Ipswich City Council Customer Service Centre at the top of the Ipswich Mall.
“Each year we get fresh blood, while bringing back the voices everybody loves,” Annie said. “The fact that this show is still going on is ridiculous, it’s extraordinary! We’re so excited about coming to Ipswich, the venue is brilliant.” Local singer Samara Marinelli won the role for the Ipswich leg of the show by going through an audition process. “I heard about the auditions on the Ipswich Civic Centre Facebook page, so I emailed my application with a bio and photo. I got a phone call saying I had an audition and I went from there!” Samara said. The 24 year old from Ironbark is a veteran of the local music scene, with many years performing in Eisteddfods, Orpheus productions and as a coach. “I’ve performed many times at the Civic Centre, and it will be really amazing to be on stage with these incredible women. In the Brisbane music scene ‘Women in Voice’ is so well renowned, so it’s great to be involved. “ Samara is studying a double degree in Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education. Alison St Ledger has been involved for more than 20 years, and this year is the show’s
Director. It is fair to say the show is in the safest hands possible. For many years, Alison and Annie toured as backup singers for Powderfinger… but that’s another story. “I’ve always been involved in the show as a performer, doing everything from Shirley Bassey to David Bowie! I think I’ve even done ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’! I guess that’s the reason why Annie thought of me to direct, as I have such a long history, and I know how the show fits together. For me, it’s absolutely my dream job. This project I feel has been an integral part of my career, part of my life,” Alison said. “It’s very close to my heart and I’m having a wonderful time with it. There’s a real magic in the rehearsal room with a beautiful blend of voices and personalities. I’m so excited to be touring the show. It’s very much a Brisbane icon, and it’s not fair for those audiences to keep it to themselves,” Alison added. “It’s great to give other parts of the state a taste of what Women in Voice is all about!” Main: ‘Women in Voice’ performers — Carita Spenser, Liz Buchanan, Lil’ Fi, Samara Marinelli, Bethan Ellsmore Opposite page: Samara Marinelli and Alison St Ledger Below: Previous WIV cast members in action (2013) Annie Lee, Alison St Ledger, Carita Farrer Spencer & Naomi Price

WHAT’S
TRENDING Can you solve this mystery? Mystery surrounds three century-old family photographs discovered under a Goodna home recently, and the search is on to find out who owns them.
“I have spoken to the current owners of the property and they can’t shed any light on the mystery. “The property was previously owned by the Surman family who may have some connection with the photos.” The large hand-coloured photos measure an average of 750 square centimetres and are set in ornate wooden frames which are in fair condition. The back of one of the photographs bears a label from picture framers ‘Diamond Bros’. whose studio was listed as Leichardt St Brisbane. “The earliest reference in old newspapers I have found to Dimond Brothers in Brisbane is 125 years ago in 1889, so these photos could be well over a hundred years old! “It would be tremendous if the community could solve this mystery and safely return these photographs to the family involved,” Cr Tully said.
The photographs appear to depict family members over several generations, and Ipswich City Council’s Paul Tully is on the hunt across Ipswich and Brisbane to reunite the photos with their rightful owner. “The photographs came to light after a tenant at a William St property found them stored under the low-set home, and delivered them to my Goodna office to track down the family.

Catholic schools ready for an exciting year of change
ENROLMENTS IGGS extends boarding offer Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School (IGGS) will extend its existing boarding offering from Years 7 to 12 to include Years 5 and 6, following approval by the Minister for Education, Training and Employment, Mr JohnPaul Langbroek, and the Non-State Schools Accreditation Board. The extended boarding offering provides the opportunity for students to prepare for secondary education, drawing on the success demonstrated through Ipswich Junior Grammar School’s (IJGS) NAPLAN results, with IGGS and IJGS students consistently achieving some of the top NAPLAN results in the local area. While boarding is associated with students in rural areas, IGGS provides a variety of family-friendly boarding options including day boarding (dinner, two-hours supervised study and a shower for pick-up by 9.00 pm), temporary boarding (overnight or a couple of nights), casual boarding (as needed to suit parents who may need to attend interstate meetings, weekly boarding (Monday to Friday) and full boarding. According to Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School Principal, Dr Peter Britton, the Boarding House will remain focussed on nurturing the development of confident, well-educated students with a quality all-round curricular and co-curricular education program. “Our range of boarding options provides a balance for students who may have a heavy
curricular and co-curricular program, while also providing options for busy families in Ipswich and surrounding areas,” Dr Britton said. “The addition of Years 5 and 6 also provides a transition for girls in regional communities between their primary and secondary years,” he said. Apart from supervised study each evening students stay in the boarding house, Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School and Ipswich Junior Grammar School also provides extension opportunities for all students with plans to expand the School’s popular music program and introduce additional challenge programs in the Junior, Middle and Secondary schools. Students are also welcome to try boarding as a Grammar Girl for a Day by calling the IGGS Registrar, Mrs Wendy Levkovich on 07 3454 4401 or emailing enrolment@iggs.qld.edu.au.

Enrol now for 2015
With places quickly filling in Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) schools, now is the time for parents to think about enrolling for 2015. Significant growth in enrolments over the past 10 years indicated the value families placed upon a faith-based, high quality education for their children. Catholic schools now educate almost one in five Queensland children across Queensland and working closely with local Catholic parishes, are an important face of the Church to young families seeking support in their challenging work of parenting and educating their children. As welcoming communities, those of different cultural backgrounds and faith traditions are made to feel at home and every student is given the opportunity to experience success by reaching their full potential in all aspects of school life. 2015 will also be an historic year for BCE schools with the transition from Year 7 to secondary gathering pace. BCE’s Senior Project Officer — Year 7 to Secondary, Ian Davis, said preparations for the big shift in 2015 was well advanced.
Ian said the change was an exciting, oncein-a-life-time opportunity to further enhance the quality of education in every one of BCE’s primary, secondary and P-12 schools from Childers in the north, south to the Gold Coast and west to Kingaroy. “Buildings will be finished on time, Year 7 enrolments for many of our colleges has already begun and at the end of the term, our secondary and P-12 colleges will begin employing staff for 2015,” he said. NOW THAT’S
ENTERTAINMENT Wine review WITH PETER COULTAS AT THE PA HOTEL
Many of us have a Bucket List of the perfect jobs. I was lucky enough to fulfill one such dream working in the wine industry for just on 10 years. During that time I saw some of Australia’s best wine regions and sampled many a fine drop from some of the countries best winemakers. A few weeks ago I felt a smile ignite when Winemaker Mark Messenger from Juniper Estate decide to pay us a visit and share some of his best wines. (It’s a tough job but someone has to do it) Juniper is a family owned Vineyard in Margaret River WA in the heart of one of the countries best wine growing area’s. Having sold these wines to many a restaurant in my day, the wines did not let me down. The stand out was an amazing 2008 Juniper Crossing Shiraz. WOW! 100% Margaret River fruit, and this wine spent 14 months in Oak with 10%
being in new French Barriques. The wine is drinking perfectly now and a great example of Margaret River Shiraz. Bursting still with big berry fruit, soft white pepper tones subtle tannins this wine punches above its weight. It’s a perfect partner with a juicy steak, with natural food tannins in balance with the full flavor of a well aged Shiraz. With the wine industry still in over supply this wine is a bargain and an opportunity to try at it’s best. A small amount was secured for Char’d Steak Restaurant available by glass and Bottle until we run out. Tasting available on request and take home option available. Our New Wine List at Char’d will be released soon with many of our tops wines being made available in the Restaurant at Retail Price “Happy Days Ahead” Cheers Pete

SHOWBIZ WITH 97.3 FM’s LOUISE *Finally! Ghostbusters 3 is happening! Director Paul Feig has confirmed via Twitter that he’s making a new instalment in the franchise AND it will feature women in the lead roles. Paul Feig is also the director behind Bridesmaids and The Heat — so he’s already worked with Hollywood funny ladies Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, and Sandra Bullock.
*Angelina Jolie has been made an honorary dame by Queen Elizabeth! Jolie was awarded the Insignia for the Honorary Dame Grand Cross of the Most Distinguished Order or St Michael and St George. What a title! The ceremony took place at Buckingham Palace and was in recognition of her services to British Foreign Affairs and her efforts at ending sexual violent in war zones.
*Hugh Grant had dropped out of the third Bridget Jones movie. He said in an interview: ‘They are going to make another film — but without me… I am quite huffy. I would have done it but I don’t think the script was there. It will probably be a huge mistake.” *When Taylor Swift says We Are Never Ever EVER Getting Back Together — she means it! Swift said in an interview that the idea of dating gives her a panic attack. That she: “made the decision to spend time on my own and figure out who I am… The last couple of years have been about defining life on my own terms. Being on my own, prioritizing my girlfriends, my family and my music above everything else and trying things I never thought I’d try. It’s really been a liberating and freeing time.” She also says it
would take “an astonishing human for me to even consider getting back into a relationship… It would take something really, really, really, really different — a kind of a onein-a-million person for me to face all that.” *Penelope Cruz, 40, has been named the Sexiest Woman Alive by Esquire magazine. She’s following in some pretty amazing footsteps
— Scarlett Johansson and Mila Kunis have receieved the previous two honors. Cruz told the mag that when she was younger, she used to have “an attraction to drama” but now she “could not be less interested in that… For me, the most attractive, charming, cool, fun, interesting thing is a plan.” *You go girl! Jennifer Lawrence has broken her silence about the hacked nude photos and what she had to say to Vanity Fair was inspiring: “It is not a scandal. It is a sex crime. It is a sexual violation. It’s disgusting. The law needs to be changed, and we need to change. That’s why these Web sites are responsible. Just the fact that somebody can be sexually exploited and violated, and the first thought that crosses somebody’s mind is to make a profit from it. It’s so beyond me. I just can’t imagine being that detached from humanity. I can’t imagine being that thoughtless and careless and so empty inside. Just because I’m a public figure, just because I’m an actress, does not mean that I asked for this… It does not mean that it comes with the territory… It’s my body, and it should be my choice, and the fact that it is not my choice is absolutely disgusting. I can’t believe that we even live in that kind of world.” Till next time… Louise

By George, he’s funny! One of Australia’s hardest working and most experienced comedians is coming to Ipswich for the first time, on a night of comedy that is not to be missed. Veteran comic George Smilovici is performing at Brothers on November 6, supported by Matty Marr and Pete Rosky. It’s the 30th anniversary of the release of George’s epic stand up single ‘I’m Tuff’ which reached number 1 on charts all over the world. “I imagined the future as rocket ships, and doing something different, I never thought that 30 years later I’d be reminded about that single,” George told Ipswich Life. “People still call out ‘How tuff are you?’ at my shows, it’s very weird.” George loves to take his audience on a journey each time he performs, creating that ‘living in the moment’ show that makes everyone feel part of something special. “I’ve got to know that I’ve hit that nail on the head within ten seconds of being on stage and once that’s achieved I can take the audience anywhere I want. “Where I take them isn’t even up to me, its like all of us riding a giant wave together, working with instinct…and that’s the best feeling in the world. If it doesn’t happen in a show, then I don’t consider it a success. If I have to rely solely on material I don’t get that personal satisfaction, I love to tap into the audience, creating that shared experience,” George said, as he also has one piece of

Coalition air forces in Iraq have achieved initial success in their mission, to “contain, disrupt and degrade” Islamic State forces, by restricting IS ability to mass and move, thereby gaining more territory than they now hold. The air campaign was never going to defeat IS quickly, rather the aim is to contain the advance of IS forces, buying time so that the Iraqi Army can rebuild, regroup and be ready to engage IS, and take back Iraqi territory. “Air power stops forces amassing on a battlefield and taking ground, and having freedom of manoeuvre,” said Chief of Defence Force, Air Marshal Mark Binskin. “The counter for IS is to go into urban areas, which is exactly what is happening. Their tactics have changed as the air campaign has progressed. They are not moving as freely as they were, which in itself is part of the ‘disrupt’ element of the plan.” Should IS come out, to take ground again, they will become a target for air strikes by aircraft ranging in type from fighter jets down to tactical-level Apache battlefield helicopters. There is no illustion that Air Power alone will defeat IS. “Ultimately, it’s Iraqi Army boots on the ground that’s going to be able to resolve this for Iraq,” AIRMHSL Binskin said. “Development of a strategy, to build up Iraqi Army combat capability, will be the subject of discussions within the US-led coalition.” Australia’s contribution to Operation OKRA has been significant, starting with an air drop of supplies onto Sinjar Mountain mid-August and into Erbil late August. During September, air transports flew five missions into Erbil carrying military cargo, including ordnance and AK-47 weapons. These missions were followed by F/A-18F Super Hornet missions early October, carrying JDAM GPS-guided 500lb free-fall bombs and JBU-12 laser-guided bombs.
On October 8, a Super Hornet of 1 Squadron dropped two bombs on a designated IS target, destroying it. Regular armed Super Hornet missions are continuing, with the potential to deliver bombs on target on each mission. “Interdiction operations and close air support operations are continuing, along with KC-30A air refuelling operations for coalition aircraft, and E-7A AEW&C aircraft conducting AEW&C airspace management missions,” the CDF said. With the onus on preparing Iraqi forces to confront and defeat IS forces and regain Iraqi territory, the force rebuilding mission is paramount – so the ‘assist and advise’ mission involving Special Forces of the United States and Australia is vital to achieving that position. Their will be at the higher echelons of the Iraqi Army down to battalion headquarters level, but not at the close fighting level. “The mission will be to develop Iraqi Army capability — to develop their planning and wherewithal to conduct successful operations — helping them integrate air, joint fires, the intelligence picture, ultimately to get the best effect on the ground,” the CDF said. Back to the future for tactical airlift at RAAF Amberley The Amberley air base has been confirmed as the future operating base for No 35 Squadron and its fleet of 10 new Alenia C-27J battlefield airlifters. This will mean a boost in numbers at the base, with about 250 personnel plus their families calling Amberley and Ipswich home. Previously, Amberley was home to DHC-4 Caribou aircraft with No 38 Squadron. Delivery of the first C-27J aircraft will be RAAF Base Richmond, starting early 2015, but the plan is to move the squadron to Amberley once new facilities and support infrastructure has been constructed on-base to permanently house the squadron. With the increased focus of Australian Army presence and training activities in Queensland and in the Northern Territory, basing the C-27J at Amberley is seen as the best option. The C-27J, as an eventual replacement for the venerable Caribou aircraft, has been a
long time coming. Defence retired the Caribou in 2009, the aircraft having served with distinction for more than 35 years, including service during the Vietnam War. The C-27J fills a gap in Australian Defence Force capability, bringing back specialised tactical airlift capability. Some air support tasks are simply not practicable using other airlifters such as the C-17 and C-130. The C-27J type of airlifter is cheaper to operate than the larger aircraft, are more responsive to in-theatre tasking, and they take the tasking load off the larger airlifter fleets. C-27J aircrew and technician training will begin in the United States later this year, and full operational capability of the C-27J is planned for December 2017 after the squadron has completed its move to Amberley.

MONEY & PROPERTY
MATTERS Bonds - issues to consider BY MARK BOURIS
One of the most popular investments as people near retirement is bonds. Fixed interest funds, which invest in some cash, but mostly in government and corporate bonds, can be a conservative way to pursue above-cash returns with a modest increase in risk. Good fixed interest funds can return around 1 per cent to 3 per cent over the RBA cash rate with a lot less volatility than shares. Fixed interest funds achieve these returns by lending money to banks and corporates at higher interest rates than you get when you lend money yourself to a bank via a deposit, which is just another loan. People don’t think about it that way but a deposit involves you becoming a bank to your bank. Fixed interest can also add-value by finding bonds that are relatively cheap, or which are paying unusually good interest rates. Bonds are assets through which governments, banks, and companies borrow money from investors — including institutions, super funds and other banks and governments in order to fund their operations. Bonds sit higher up the capital structure in a safer position than equities or shares: it is like the difference between the bank that lends you money to buy a home via a mortgage and the equity that you own in that property. The mortgage is first-ranking and gets paid out before you get any equity when you sell your

home or in an event of default. However, things are changing in bond markets and there will be issues to consider for investors in general and retirement savers in particular. For the past 30 years, interest rates on bonds have been generally dropping. Australia’s 10-year government bond yielded around 14 per cent in 1984. Today it is around 3.3 per cent. As interest rates declined, the price of older “fixed-rate” (as opposed to “floating-rate”) bonds rose over time because they were more valuable than new fixed-rate bonds with lower interest rates. With a fixed-rate bond, the interest rate or coupon is fixed over its term, which is typically 3, 5, or 10 years. This is like a long-dated term deposit. In contrast a floating-rate bond is like a variable savings account with an interest rate that moves up and down when the RBA changes its cash rate. In this way, the price of a floating rate bond does not change when external interest rates change. A fixed-rate bond will suffer price falls when interest rates increase because the decline in its price makes the fixed coupon increase as a share of the value of the bond until the yield is the same as outside interest rates. Many economists are now forecasting that long-term interest rates will increase as the world normalises and lifts itself out of the deepest ruts dug by the GFC. There is an opportunity here for retirement savers. Most of the money in fixed interest funds currently rides on fixed-rate bonds. These bonds will suffer capital losses as interest rates increase and underperform. New Polo raises the bar The Polo from VW has proven to be a massive hit all over the world, with over 14 million cars produced in the range. Now, Volkswagen Australia is introducing a new Polo that has been advanced visually and technically, and will raise the bar in the highly competitive 5 door segment. The assistance systems, as well as the new efficient engines of the Polo, have taken enormous strides forward. In its class, the Polo offers the widest range of assistance systems and is the first car in this class that comes equipped with a Multi-Collision Braking System and, as part of an optional package, with Adaptive Cruise Control. In the case of both the infotainment system and engines, a completely new generation of technologies were integrated in the car. Thanks to new engines and the inclusion of BlueMotion Technology (start/stop and brake energy recuperation), Volkswagen realised fuel economy improvements of as much as 21 per cent. Assistance systems for all: Many of the assistance systems of the Golf class are now making their way into the new Polo. They include the standard Multi-Collision Braking System (automatically initiates braking of the vehicle that had an accident in order to prevent a subsequent collision) as well as an optional Driver Comfort Package which includes Driver Fatigue Detection System, “Front Assist” ambient traffic monitoring system with City Emergency Braking and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC).
The new Polo also increases its edge over the competition with an impressive range of new convenience and safety functions that are unique in the light car segment. A new electro-mechanical power steering improves steering properties, enhancing one of the Polo’s already strongest attributes. Progressive infotainment system: The radio system has been redesigned; reflecting state-of-the-art technology in what is known as the ‘modular infotainment system’ (MIB). The software and hardware of the system follows the infotainment technologies of the larger Golf, and offers functions such as Bluetooth audio streaming in both (Polo Trendline and Comfortline) specifications. Visually, the new Polo can be identified by sharper front and rear designs. Fresh colours, new interior materials and many other equipment details perfect the Volkswagen car. The updated Polo is once again available in Trendline and Comfortline equipment versions. Black is the new black! Toyota has added an edgy new style to the ruggedness of Australia’s best-selling four-wheel-drive with the unveiling of a special-edition model dubbed ‘HiLux Black’. New for this version of the “unbreakable” HiLux is the combination of brooding black side steps, sports bar and leather-accented interior trim including the six-way adjustable power-operated driver’s seat. Even the newly designed 17-inch alloy wheels are painted black behind their brightly machined six-spoke facades. Prominent new front and rear bumpers, never previously offered in Australia, give the HiLux Black a lower, more planted stance — a powerful look accentuated by black extensions below the fog light surrounds. Maintaining the model’s moody theme is a large black lower front grille that features a stylish red stripe along the bottom edge. LED daylight running lamps are specified for the first time on a HiLux in Australia. Enthusiasts will appreciate the involvement of Toyota’s global partner TRD for cosmetic enhancements with its familiar logo appearing on the wheel caps and the front bumper extension. With fewer than 1,000 being produced, the HiLux Black is based on the SR5 4x4 Double Cab pickup and attracts the maximum fivestar safety rating. The special-edition model is powered
exclusively by Toyota’s torquey 3.0-litre fourcylinder turbo-diesel engine, mated to either a five-speed manual gearbox or the fivespeed automatic transmission introduced earlier this year. The extensive feature list includes a reversing camera and a satellite navigation* system with SUNA Live Traffic updates — all viewed on the 6.1-inch display audio screen. The colour choice is black and white — literally, as Toyota has chosen Eclipse Black and Glacier White as the only exterior paint options for the special-edition model. Equally as stark is the black-and-white sales dominance HiLux enjoys among local customers. HiLux is the best-selling vehicle of its type and ranks third on the best-seller list for all vehicles in Australia. In 4x4 guise, its sales have topped 20,000 this year — a lead of more than 5,000 sales over its nearest competitor. In the 4x2 Pick up/Cab chassis market, HiLux sales are running more than 3,500 vehicles ahead of its closest rivals. Future Hyundai WRC based on i20
Hyundai Motorsport has carried out the first roll-out of its next WRC car, based on the New Generation i20.
Alongside its participation in the 2014 FIA World Rally Championship (WRC), Hyundai Motorsport has recently rolled out the first prototype of its next WRC car, which is based on the recently-launched New Generation i20. French driver Bryan Bouffier carried out the very first shakedown of the car on a private testing ground in Germany last month, with the aim of checking all systems and to start collecting valuable data for upcoming development tests. Hyundai’s third-generation B-segment vehicle is a completely new car compared to the current model — the WRC version incorporates
all the learning and valuable feedback that the team has collected during its first season in the World Rally Championship. Hyundai Motorsport Team Principal Michel Nandan commented: “Of course we are just at the beginning of a long process and we will continue to work hard on development and continue testing in the next months and throughout 2015.”
