One day it is still 2 degrees in the morning (BRRR) and the next its 31 degrees and I find myself getting the pool ready for the school holidays! The Spring event in the Ipswich Mall was a huge hit recently, and along with the warm weather there is a real air of positivity around Ipswich at the moment. It won’t be long before we are all spending weekends at one of several water parks in and around South East Queensland, along with those late afternoon storms that make living in the South East of this great state so interesting. In this issue we have been very busy out and about capturing the people and events in Ipswich, inlcuding the VIP event at TAFE Bundamba, and the Spring Garden & Harvest event in the Ipswich Mall. PLUS we have our biggest giveaway EVER as we have 125 double movie passes to see a preview of the new movie ‘Dracula Untold’ which looks like a ripper. TAFE welcomes industry leaders to Bundamba campus Community and industry leaders from across Ipswich were the guests of honour at TAFE Queensland South West recently when they attended a presentation at Bundamba. The event, held in conjunction with the annual Open Day, provided an opportunity for a wide range of businesses to learn more about how recent reforms to TAFE will enhance the delivery of training services in the region. TAFE Queensland South West General Manager, Trevor Schwenke, said the organisation was committed to delivering training in ways which most effectively meet the evolving needs of industry. “We are no longer an education provider; rather we are now a business that delivers education and that continues to evolve. “Today we not only deliver in classrooms but also in the workplace, through mobile delivery and through the utilisation of technology including videoconferencing, online resources and increasingly through social media to meet the evolving needs of industry and individuals,” he said. Mr Schwenke added that the amalgamation of the Bremer and Southern Queensland Institutes of TAFE (to form TAFE Queensland South West) had created many new opportunities for the organisation. “The reform of TAFE in Queensland is about efficiency, allowing TAFE institutes to be more commercially and client focused and allowing us to give our full attention to what we do best; deliver training.

“Uniting the new region as part of the TAFE Queensland network, enables us to draw on our strengths and take the best of what we do and offer that state wide,” Mr Schwenke said. Mr Schwenke said that TAFE was committed to Ipswich and to growing the number of training partners but this could only happen if business worked with his organisation. He said that maintaining a strong and sustainable presence in Ipswich would require productive and long term partnerships with industry, individual businesses, schools and the community. The taste of Spain, with a dash of Ipswich!

WHAT’S NEW IN

THEATRE

Local dancers will get the opportunity to show their dance skills as part of an innovative and daring concept by Expressions Dance Company (EDC), which is bringing its most popular show to the Ipswich Civic Centre.

“The best way I can describe the production, is as a contemporary dance, made not for a specific dance audience, but a wider, general audience. The performance is very accessible and easy to follow. It’s not Bizet’s Carmen, which everyone knows, but the Carmen Sweet, as it’s a bit shorter and very cheeky. This production concentrates on the love story.”

Artistic Director Natalie Weir Expressions Dance Company

Performed to Rodion Shchedrin’s gripping Carmen Suite, six EDC dancers, portray this iconic tale of Spanish heat and gypsy passion, which unravels when naïve soldier Don José has his heart ignited by the fiery Carmen. José’s attempts to tame the freedom-loving beauty are futile, and when she leaves him for the famous matador Escamillo, all three are engulfed in the flames of jealousy and revenge. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Natalie Weir, the production has evolved since its creation in 2012, and Natalie is excited to bring the show to Ipswich. She has travelled the world in her role as a choreographer, and excited to be involving the community in the production. “This work was originally created in 2012, when it was commissioned by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra,” Natalie said. “I did the choreography for it, and the symphony orchestra played live on stage behind us, which was amazing. “The best way I can describe it, is as a contemporary dance, made for a wider, general audience. “The performance is very accessible and easy to follow. It’s not Bizet’s Carmen, which everyone knows, but the Carmen Sweet, as it’s a bit shorter and very cheeky. This production concentrates on the love story.” The performance features six dancers, three of whom play the same character, along with three other male dancers and not forgetting the lucky local performers Sarah Bye, Damika Doorley, Stephanie Gaunt, Alicia Holyoake, Tanita Hurst, Keia McGrady, Larissa Meade, Jasmine Organ, Lilly Smith, and Eliza Turton. One of the dancers from Expressions Dance Company came to Ipswich and held

audItions. All the dancers had to be of a certain ballet level, and be able to ‘capture the Carmen style’. “We are lucky to have three dancers in our company who I decided to use, all playing the same character,” Natalie said. “This allows them all to have the starring role, along with a soldier, a matador and a fortune teller who comes to Carmen and shows her a vision of her own death. It’s a case of taking that story and making it into its own being. “After I’d created this show I thought it was such a great product I decided to lengthen it, then I had the idea that it would be great to have a community involvement. “I knew it was a terrific production which would be ideal for touring, and then thought it would be great to get locals involved. How good would it be to have the local dancers in each town on stage? It would create lots of excitement and give the town some ownership of the production. “My first show at 18 was with Expressions Dance Company, and when artistic director/ founder Maggi Sietsma left after 25 years I applied for the role, got the job and I’ve come full circle. Brisbane has always been my home, I live here, my family is here and I’m head of a company that I’ve always loved, now playing a role in the evolution of dance…all that means a lot to me. Its fabulous to take this show on tour and extend the life of a product.” So after many years in the industry, what advice would Natalie give to anyone keen for a career in dance? “My advice is to have the passion. You have to be proactive, disciplined and get as much knowledge as you can, don’t limit yourself. In the end it will round you out as a performer.” Natalie said.

“I think it’s a wonderful career, and it really never leaves you once it captures your imagination as a youth….you never really give it up, most people will go to see shows their whole life. In a word passion is what it takes. “To be a part of the evolution of contemporary dance in Queensland is a wonderful thing.” Natalie Weir’s Carmen Sweet is on at Ipswich Civic Centre on Thursday October 2nd. WHAT’S GOING ON

CITY VIBE The Listening Post With Ian Berry MP MEMBER FOR IPSWICH

Queensland is witnessing a resurgent economy with rapid growth in our small business sector heavily contributing to the development and opportunities available for our local community. Whilst steady improvement in this sector is occurring; the cost of living is still a pertinent issue for many people across Ipswich. With the repeal of the carbon tax, we have seen the savings passed onto the community. Recently the State Government gave the community the choice between cheaper fares or more services on the public transport network. Meeting with constituents at Booval and Ipswich train stations during the early hour commuter traffic, the response was resoundingly in favour of cheaper fares. Whilst passing the savings onto the public will have a significant impact on the cost of living of thousands of Ipswich residents, more needs to be done take the weight off daily expenses. It is important that we take a long hard look at how we can achieve this well into the future. It is clear that we have to reduce the $79.9 billion debt. There is no denying this is a dark shadow hanging over the economic prosperity of Queensland. Once this has been addressed we can look forward and see a decrease in the cost of living and a steady return in discretionary spending that will no doubt bolster local small business confidence. We know what we want — we want cheaper fuel, cheaper groceries, cheaper goods and cheaper services; so all we need to ask is what are we prepared to do to achieve it? I would be interested to hear your thoughts on how to ease the daily cost of living for people in Ipswich by emailing me at ipswich@parliament.qld. gov.au Ian Berry MP facebook.com/ianberrymp

SPRING MARKETS IN

IPSWICH

Spring is here, and what better way to spend time than at the Spring Markets in Ipswich Mall, with a strong emphasis on being out and about. Spring is well and truly here, and the crowds turned out in force to make the most of the ‘Ipswich Spring Garden & Harvest’ held recently in the Ipswich Mall. Celebrity chef Ben O’Donoghue cooked up a storm for the hungry crowds. There were loads of children’s activities, book signings, demonstrations, free entertainment, workshops and a heap of stalls, which created a fun market atmosphere. Wines and local ales were available as was fare from local foodies and Mehfils Restaurant, plus there was plenty of great menu ideas created at the cooking demonstrations. David Stuhmcke from ‘A Lot A Books’ said he was impressed with the response. “It was a great day, everybody seemed to enjoy themselves,” David said. “Chef Ben O’Donohue and Jerry Coleby-Williams from ‘Gardening Australia’ were both very popular. “Jerry stayed an extra hour, with so many people lining up to see him. He really enjoyed it. I’d love to see this event every year!”

Your dream house: 3-step recipe Queensland Property Group (QPG) has been developing land in Ipswich since 2002 and have played a significant role in growing our community for the future. The Group has a unique recipe to get people into their own home — and be able to afford the mortgage.

QPG has grown to cater for their client’s real estate and their financial needs. The company specializes in residential land development, and affordable housing solutions; with one of the most extensive project management portfolios within the city of Ipswich. QPG has carried out 9 residential projects in the past decade and sold greater than 1500 lots since its commencement. QPG has land located in Bundamba, Brassall, Collingwood Park and Flinders View; all estates have easy access to Ipswich and Brisbane CBD, schools, parks, shopping centers, medical facilities and job opportunities. QPG understands that the thought of buying

your first home can be overwhelming. So instead, think of the process of buying a new home, from start to finish, just like baking a cake. Unless you’re a 5 star chef, sourcing all the components, timely deliveries and producing the perfect product is never easy, and even more difficult if it’s your first time. Instead of doing everything alone- having to shop for supplies and figure out as you go, let the team at QPG take your stress away with their ‘pre-made cake mix’. QPG has a perfect recipe when it comes to providing their clients with the best house and land packages, with an affordable mortgage. QPG are a one-stopshop; they manage the land development,

]

sales process, construction, and the cherry on top; they even have their own in-house broker who is able to help you obtain finance. Picture a custom designed home & land package built to your style, budget & comfort. Revel in the fact that it truly was as easy, stress free and rewarding as following a recipe. QPG provide an easy and stress free 3 step recipe for your very own home. You will be the chef during this process and are completely in control of the decisions every step of the way. So let’s get started, it’s time to prepare, cook, and finally, enjoy your dream home!

3 Step Dream Home Recipe The ingredients: 1 x Excited Customer 1 x QPG Broker 1 x QPG Real Estate Team 1 x House & Land tailor made for you 1 x Builder & House Designer (your choice)

Step 1 – Preparation

Preparation begins when registering your interest with QPG. Once initial contact and discussions occur, the house design is tailored to your financial needs and aesthetic desires. QPG knows everyone doesn’t like the same flavored cake, so not only do you have a selection of land location and block sizes, they also provide a wide range of builders and

Step 2 – Cooking Just like all good recipes, patience is key. You will need to preheat your oven to 20 weeks from building start date. But unlike some cakes your timer may ring sooner. When the house is being constructed your QPG assistant will be guiding you every step of the way. The most important component when baking a cake, is to ensure you are using the appropriate tools. QPG staff are the best tools to use when buying a new home, they will ensure that your process is as seamless as possible.

Step 3 – Enjoy This is the last step in the recipe; it’s time to sit back and enjoy your new home. Whether you are a first home buyer in one of QPG’s affordable dual-occupancy homes or an investor handing the keys over to their new tenants. Dual–Occupancy houses have proven to be the most cost effective way of owning a home. For home owners, living in the main house and renting out the auxiliary unit to; family, friend or sourced from Realty has demonstrated to be beneficial in minimizing your mortgage repayments. This product will pay itself off, with money left in the bank. It provides its owner with 7% positive geared rental returns on their investment. Spring is here and I’ve had the pleasure of attending several school fetes as well as the annual Glebe Garden Expo and the Rosewood Festival. I look forward to this time of year when everyone is starting shake off winter, plants are beginning to flower and the birds are singing. I confess though that my favourite activity at these fetes is often purchasing the home cooked jams and chutneys! When Parliament is not sitting, I make sure I get to as many local meetings and events as possible. In addition, this time provides a good opportunity for me to get out and about and meet locals at my regular mobile offices. I recently set myself up with some volunteers at the Fernvale Markets and I was pleased to see that it is still very well attended, with hundreds of people coming through the gates. Last week, I spent two days travelling with my mobile offices in rural Ipswich and in the Somerset region, listening to locals who wanted to share their stories and their concerns. This is a really good opportunity for me to understand the issues people are facing in my electorate and I thank everyone who takes the time to stop by and chat to me. Last Saturday I attended Blue Care Alkira’s Aged Care Facility in Toogoolawah to share in their 25th Anniversary celebrations. This is a wonderful facility and I congratulate the staff, the management and the residents on their 25th Anniversary. Part of my role on the Joint Select Committee

on Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples requires me to travel around Australia to attend public hearings and get feedback from the community and from stakeholders. At these public hearings, we are asking all Australians for their views on how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples should be recognised in the Constitution, and whether the Constitution can address issues of discrimination. This bipartisan Parliamentary Committee is doing some good work and I welcome the day that Australia’s First Peoples will be recognised in our Constitution. Kind regards Shayne Neumann, MP

Spring Carnival is here! Every year we welcome the arrival of Spring with such excitement. The warmth of the season change, the adorning of dresses and brighter colours always sees happiness all around. So it is no surprise that the annual Spring Racing Carnival is celebrated by so many and for those who don’t know a lot about spring racing, you may have heard of a little race that stops the nation, Melbourne Cup, which is an annual event and has been running for more than 100 years. There are now several other annual horse racing days that take place all around the country and make up the Spring Racing Carnival including Derby Day which is now a very well attended day by ladies. Now, personally the racing of the horses is not what thrills me the most; it is the fashions! The opportunity to wear extravagant headwear and pretty frocks is always an occasion I look forward to. I also love to encourage others to piece together fashions in and around Ipswich supporting local boutiques and scouring the vintage shops for unique accessories ensures getting ready is fun. This season bright orange and bright pink will be seen together along with mint green and pretty coral. White is also back adding a hint of coolness to the warmer days. Add in a glass of champagne and a gorgeous Spring day out with friends and you have yourself the perfect Spring Carnival racing event!

Zambrero’s menu features all the Mexican favourites such as tacos, burritos and nachos, but what distinguishes Zambrero’s food is its focus on nutritious meals bursting with true flavour. Talking Beer

WHAT’SON

WITH ANTHONY AT THE PA HOTEL

Little Creatures Pale Ale “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” This proverb could not be more poignant to describe my introduction to the wonderful world of craft beer. My journey began seven years ago when I ventured down to my local watering hole with a couple of friends. My friend was nice enough to get the first round and he returned with a rich amber cultured beer. It was Little Creatures Pale Ale. At first I was hesitant, but on my first sip I succumbed to the flavor and was hooked. Beer with flavor, who’d a thunk it? Since then my journey has been a well rounded one: from pouring craft beer behind a bar, designing ads for craft beer and even selling craft beer on the road. So, being somewhat of an ambassador to craft beer I feel it is my duty to help people with that first step, and part of that is pointing people in the right direction. My finger of guidance is pointing at Ipswich’s premier steakhouse Char’d at the Prince Alfred Hotel in Booval. Much to my pleasure I might add, are making the first step into craft beer. They will be ranging many different craft breweries like Murray’s, Holgate, Burleigh Brewing and Stone & Wood as well a few little gems from Sydney and Melbourne. The beauty of this craft beer revolution at Char’d is that they will help you match your meal to the perfect beer, creating the ultimate dining experience. I don’t know about you but I’m excited! Craft beer has a rich tapestry of flavors, be brave, don’t be afraid to try something new, find your favorite then find another, put on your walking boots and take that first step, you won’t regret it.

Could there be a Ghostbusters remake, with female ghostbusters? Bill Murray hopes so! He said his dream cast would be Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig and Emma Stone.

*Rumours have been circulating that there may be a sequel to Bridesmaids on the cards but actor and writer Kristen Wiig has dashed our hopes telling Ellen it’s definitely not on. *The Rock aka Dwayne Johnson is keen on playing the next Bond villain, except they can’t afford him! Apparently there’s a role in the next flick that “calls for a hulking brute similar to metal-mouthed baddie Jaws from the early Bond films” but a source close to the film says he’s asking for more money than Daniel Craig (below) gets paid to play Bond!

*Will Ferrell has let some details slip about the upcoming Zoolander sequel and his character Mugatu is set to return. In Zoolander 2 Derek and Hansel (Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson) are trying to compete against younger models as an opposing company tries to take them out from the business. *One of the biggest selling singles of 2013 was Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines but it’s emerged through a lawsuit that he may not have wrote much of it at all… After being sued for it sounding like Marvin Gaye’s ‘Got To Give You Up’ , Thicke said in a deposition: “I was high on vicodin and alcohol when I showed up at the studio... The reality is, is that Pharrell had the beat and he wrote almost every single part of the song.” *Wills and Kate are pregnant with baby number 2 and Superdad David Beckham has some advice for them: “Get some sleep because jumping from one child to two is a big step, even though I thought jumping from two to three was bigger…But I’m so happy for them both because they’re such great parents and obviously to be great parents and to have the roles that they have, as important as they have, is really incredible and I’m happy that they will have another little one running around the house.”

The ceremony was officiated by How I Met Your Mother producer and director Pam Fryman. NPH shared the good news via twitter: “Guess what? @DavidBurtka and I got married over the weekend, in Italy. Yup, we put the ‘n’ and ‘d’ in ‘husband.’” *Orlando Bloom may reprise his role in the fifth instalment of the Pirates of the Carribean franchise. Bloom played the Blacksmith-turned pirate Will Turner in the first three movies, but was absent from the fourth. DEFENCE Taking the ice plunge for Motor Neuron Disease cure Commanding Officer 23 Squadron, Wing Commander Simon Nickson took part in the Ice Bucket Challenge recently to help raise awareness for Motor Neuron Disease. Motor neurone disease (MND) is also called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). This is serious stuff, as MND is a rapidly progressing, neurological disease. The disease often begins with weakness of the muscles in the hands, feet or voice. People with MND become increasingly disabled. Life expectancy after diagnosis is one to five years, with only 10 per cent of people living 10 years or more. Wing Commander Nickson said that the ice bucket challenge was just one small way that public attention could be focused on the dreadful outcomes of this incurable disease, leading hopefully to more research and funding to find that illusive cure. Global airlifters ask “R U OK?” Members of 36 Squadron have taken up the challenge, to ask their mates at work and in their personal lives “are you ok”, part of a national campaign to reduce the number of suicides in Australia. The sad statistic is that about 2,400 people take their own lives each year. The R U OK organisation has enlisted some heavy hitters to change that dreadful outcome, including Sir Richard Branson. While R U OK Day was on 11 September, the campaign is ongoing. It included a five-week Conversation Bus Tour focused on driving the message to the heartland of Australia. “While we cannot bring back the people we’ve lost to suicide, we can help each other through life’s difficult times, and do this long before someone even thinks about taking their own life. We want everyone to take the time to start a conversation and really listen to what a mate has to say,” R U OK? General Manager Brendan Maher said.

“We travelled 12,000 km in a bright yellow bus to inspire people to ask “are you ok?” of family and friends, and the journey ended on the national day of action in Sydney.” The campaign promotes the need for connection and a feeling of belonging. “By inspiring people to take the time to ask “are you ok?” and listen, we can help people struggling with life feel connected long before they even think about suicide,” Brendan said. Australian Health Minister Peter Dutton said suicide affects too many Australians; around seven people take their own life each day. “We all need to find the time and the courage to support those who need us most. Australians can show their commitment by signing up to be a Conversation Mate on the R U OK website at www.ruok.org.au. Photo: Members of 36 Squadron asked everyone they knew “are you ok.” (Defence)

Australian combat jets deploy to counter Islamic insurgents Two squadrons at RAAF Base Amberley are preparing to deploy aircraft and personnel to the United Arab Emirates to join an international coalition, to counter the threat from Islamic State mitants in Iraq. The Australian Government has committed to the deployment of combat and support elements of the Australian Defence Force. Up to eight RAAF F/A-18F Super Hornets, an E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning & Control aircraft, and a KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft will join the international coalition at the Al Minhad Air Base south of Dubai. The Super Hornets will provide firepower in the air defence role and presumably conduct air strikes against targets on the ground, while the KC-30A will provide air refuelling support. The sophisicated E-7A ‘Wedgetail’ will provide electronic surveillance of the battlespace, providing commanders and combat air crews with a clear picture of potential targets, and the proximity of threats such as ground-to-air launched missiles and other ground fire. A Special Operations Task Group will deploy as military advisers, to assist Iraqi and other security forces that intend taking the fight to ISIL forces. Prime Minister Tony Abbott said, “We are contributing to international efforts to prevent the humanitarian crisis from deepening. “The Government’s decision responds to a formal request from the Government of the United States to contribute specific Australian Defence Force capabilities to the international coalition.” Australia has already provided air-lift assistance to Iraq, including the movement of arms and munitions

and two humanitarian aid drops to stranded people in Northern Iraq using a RAAF C-130J Hercules and C-17A Globemaster aircraft. While the operational tasking is not clear at present, the Australian Super Hornets certainly have the capacity to carry out air strikes against ISIL elements on the ground and provide air defence deterrent. There’s something of a home loan ‘rate war’ going on at the moment. Take some mortgage advertising I saw this week: it promoted a variable mortgage rate of 4.65 per cent but beside it was a ‘5.21% comparison rate’. Look at the difference: on a $300,000 25-year mortgage at 4.65 per cent your total interest bill is $207,941. But if you pay 5.21 per cent, your costs total $237,198. The difference between what’s calculated from the headline offer and the actual costs over the long term is around $30,000. This type of advertising is a common marketing device. The low interest rate is merely an ‘introductory rate’ which in this case lasts three years. And after three years the home loan reverts to a much higher rate. So given the current interest rate cycle it’s a good time to discuss the comparison rate. The ‘comparison rate’ is a legislated requirement brought in by the federal government. It was introduced in 2003 at a time when ‘honeymoon rates’ were popular and advertised interest rates were not informing borrowers about the true long term cost of their home loan. It’s quite difficult for average borrowers to calculate what they really pay over the long term if they pay one rate for, say, two years and then revert to a ‘true’ rate for the next 23 years. So to resolve the confusion the government mandated a formula that all mortgage lenders

must use in their advertising. It includes unavoidable fees and charges, and interest rates over a set period, which creates the comparison interest rate. Because all lenders have to use the same formula, the result gives a borrower the means to compare the true cost of a loan before they commit to it, and it gives some reality to the headline interest rate. This regulation set by the government is important, but it only goes so far. The key to getting the right loan is for you as a consumer to take this information and act on it. The law says that a comparison rate must be colocated with the promotional rate, and with the same prominence. But a comparison rate is useless unless borrowers are looking at it and registering what it means. In talking to people, I often find that consumers misinterpret the comparison rate as “X” lenders best rate compared to “Y” lenders best rate. This is not at all the case. When you look down the most affordable variable rate loans (4.6%-4.8%) at a site such as RateCity, you see that those lenders with the best ranking have comparison rates almost identical to their advertised rates – that is, the rate they advertise is basically what the borrower will pay. But other loans only start at 4.6 per cent, before reverting to something much higher. Consumers are easily confused by the terminology and practices of the financial services industry. So if you’re searching for something as important as a mortgage, and a comparison rate gives you a chance to level the playing field, you really must pay attention. New Hyundai i20 interior revealed Hyundai has released the first interior images of the New Generation i20, revealing the colourful, comfortable and high cabin that is a pleasure for driver and passengers to be in. One of the highlights of the new interior is the use of contemporary colour blocks which heighten feelings of calm and create a spacious environment. An important goal for the design team was to ensure the New Generation i20’s perceived interior quality was among the best in the segment, benefiting from premium soft-touch material on all key surfaces. Independent customer reports in Germany and the UK ranked the car’s interior design and comfort higher than those of core competitors. On many of the cabin’s surfaces a high-grade Thermal Plastic Olefin (TPO) material has been applied. The soft-touch material, found on the vehicle’s dashboard and door trims, is highly durable, maintaining a premium look and feel even after frequent use. The interior colour schemes complement the exterior paint finishes and can easily be

seen from the outside. The New Generation i20 interior is available in four vibrant hues: Elegant Beige, Grey Blue, Cappuccino and Comfort Grey. Each interior colour took inspiration from current interior design and lifestyle trends, giving each its own, distinctive character. The beige interior draws inspiration from the elegant Mediterranean way of living, while the vibrant blue and grey interior designs are influenced by the flagship stores of contemporary lifestyle brands. The rich brown shade echoes the lounge feeling of modern interior design. In order to create a clean and efficient cabin, Hyundai’s ergonomics team grouped together key technologies such as audio, heating and ventilation to make the centre console as functional and easy-to-use as possible. New Generation i20 will make its public world premiere at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Australians trust Toyota

[

Toyota has been named the most trusted automotive brand in Australia for the ninth consecutive year, giving Toyota an enviable double: it is also Australia’s best-selling automotive brand.

More than 2,400 Australians were polled for the “Most Trusted” brands survey conducted for Reader’s Digest Australia. The magazine said the survey was designed to identify the brands that enjoy the on-going trust of Australians because they continue to offer quality and substance. It said trusted brands ensure their products are reliable, recognisable and useful for consumers who are savvy at decoding brand messages and quick to detect those that suit their lives and lifestyles - and those that do not. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the company valued the trust and loyalty it had earned among Australian drivers over more than 50 years of doing business in this country. “Toyota has worked hard to develop a rich heritage of class-leading vehicles built on the principles of quality, durability and reliability, all while being fun to drive,” Mr Cramb said. “The strong relationship we have built with our customers has also resulted in sustained business success,” he said. “For the past 11 consecutive years, Toyota has been the best-selling automotive brand in Australia while Corolla was Australia’s bestselling car last year — a feat it has repeated so far this year.”

Mr Cramb said Toyota’s consistently strong performance in the annual survey was a tribute to employees throughout the company and its national dealer network. “Toyota is proud to be the most trusted among more than 50 automotive brands in Australia. We are determined to keep improving our vehicles and all aspects of our business in the interests of our customers and their families,” he said. Australian motorists have bought almost six million Toyota vehicles while more than one million locally built Toyota cars have been exported. Comments about Toyota by survey respondents include: “Toyotas just seem built to last. My parents have always had Toyotas and they just kept on ticking for years and years, never any issues.” Male, 25-29, Queensland. “They are renowned for their race car involvement and learn about safety by performing in these types of events. They then put their knowledge into building safe, economical road cars.” - Male, 18-24, Victoria. “I have had six Toyotas and can’t fault them or Toyota’s service.” - Female, 65-69, Queensland. For information on all things Toyota, contact local dealer Llewellyn Toyota on 3282 2922.

Sports awards to celebrate achievements of sports stars

Clay Dawson, is a top contender for an Ipswich Sports Award, to be announced in November. The 32-year-old Arts Teacher at Rosewood High School took up running a few years ago for fun. Currently he runs around 20 km a day…yes, a day! Not bad for someone who once weighed 118kg! “When I started running there were no goals, and now I’m doing things I never dreamed I was capable of doing.

“I know I’m never going to make the Commonwealth Games, or being a national champion… it just blows my mind that a fat kid who barely represented his district can represent his state as an adult,” Clay said. “I started running to get fit and lose weight. I took a trip to Canada and did some crazy things there with some friends who talked me into doing an Adventure Race in the running leg, and I loved it. “When I got back home I joined a running community, and found one in Ipswich. The following Monday I was training with them.” People often ask marathon runners what goes through their heads, and Clay says its is great for getting a clear head. “I run all over Ipswich, normally about 140km a week, mostly in the afternoons and all over the place to mix things up. I love it because it clears the mind. It keeps me sane, as there isn’t much time in anyone’s life when you have time to be selfish, breathe fresh air and think what I want.” Clays achievements are impressive: - 1st Brisbane Marathon 2014 - 3rd Open State 10,000 mtrs Championships - 3rd Sunshine Coast Marathon - 4th Australian Marathon Championships (1st Queenslander to finish) - 3rd Hobart Cadbury Marathon. - Intraining Club Person of the Year 2013 - Brisbane Road Runners 2013 Club Champion

Chloe Trace is an ace Futsal player (indoor soccer) who hopes she can win an Ipswich Sports Award. When Chloe took up Futsal she never imagined where it would take her. Earlier this year she joined the Australian team as they played in the United Kingdom, winning all their games on tour, plus took time out with her new friends to tour the most famous stadium on Earth. The West Moreton Anglican College student learnt her trade at school. “My soccer coach said I should trial for the school Futsal team, and then from that I got selected for Queensland, then made the Australian team. “I got a letter after the national championships to tell me I made the team and we went to the UK in April. It was scary, but fun, we were there for three weeks all up,” Chloe said. “The highlight of the tour was watching the women’s Manchester City team play for the first time, plus we did a tour of Old Trafford (Manchester United’s home ground) and saw the dressing rooms, everything…it was great!” Futsal is played on a small court, with five a side and is a smaller version of soccer with a smaller, heavier ball.

“We played lots of Academy or local teams in the UK. It was scary at first, but so much fun, I’d do it again in a flash.” Chloe supports Chelsea and her favourite player of all time is Pele. Chloe Trace Age: 14 Occupation: Year 9 Student Sport: Futsal Achievements: Chosen for Australian U/14 National Futsal team, U/14 Queensland School Team
