Those of us who are old enough remember a TV show with Helen Wellings talking about consumer rights and rip off merchants out to get your money, will remember the good old days when consumers were kept informed of such things as their rights. Happy times.

Since that show ended, we’ve had to rely on the internet and word of mouth to spot a ripoff from a bargain, but thanks to the return of the ABC’s show ‘The Checkout’, its putting power back into the hands of consumers. If you haven’t seen ‘The Checkout’, you still have plenty of time to get into it as the 2014 season is twenty episodes long, after six were made in 2013. When it started, the response and ratings was so positive that the demand was there for a much longer run this year. One of the reporters on the show is Mackay girl Kirsten Drysdale, who came to national attention with the show last year, particularly for her expose of the behaviour of mobile phone companies. Kirsten went to university in Brisbane, and is a proud Queenslander who was very nervous about the show when it went to air for the first time. “I think the minutes leading up to the broadcast of the first episode was the most never wracking of my life,” she told Ipswich Life from the set of the show. “You’re

building a show from scratch. You have no track record, and absolutely no idea how its going to go. It was a show with a story about telecommunications regulation of all things in that first one, but we were absolutely delighted with how it was received and the response from viewers. “After the initial series, the ABC was keen to lengthen the run, we were happy to to do 20 episodes but we are aware that any more than that would mean serious burnout. “I wouldn’t say the ABC legal team isn’t running around in circles, but they do check everything we write before we even start shooting and then again when it is edited.” One of the big stories in the last couple of years with regards to people demanding change was the ‘Permeate’ saga that played out in supermarkets and current affair shows around the nation, and in the end changes were made. “I do remember the whole permeate thing last year. We really wanted to find out what the story was, why people were carrying on

about their rights as a consumer. I like to think it’s a show for the Davids of the world versus the Goliaths…those faceless indifferent companies.” With a bigger cast on the show this year to cope with the workload, Kirsten often has to fight the other staff for the best stories. “Quite often we will fight each other for stories, we might have an interest in certain stories or we have knowledge in that field. One reporter used to work for a bank so he loves stories on finance. “We are doing a story at the moment on products for pets which I would have loved to have done as I love animals but sadly someone a bit funnier than me got that one! “Sadly, though, there’s always going to be a segment of people who are beyond help. “I was watching the Shopping Network the other day and I thought, well I don’t know how we can help you!” about it… and at the end of the day it was all based on nothing, but it just goes to show how something can be whipped up as a consumer issue, action happens and now we have companies promoting their ‘Permeate-Free’ milk. “In the end, it’s something that actually doesn’t matter, and it makes me wonder what could happen if people were up in arms about something that really does matter.” The show was an instant hit, constantly rating

in the top ten last year. So does Kirsten have any idea why it hit a chord with viewers? “In hindsight, its because we are covering stuff that people encounter all day every day. Young or old we are buying thing every day, whether it’s a house or chewing gum at the corner store…we’re always trying to work out what is the best deal, and how to get an advantage. “Knowledge is power. I think that’s the success to the show, as we are telling people

Traineeships available locally Mayor Paul Pisasale has congratulated DB Schenker on their commitment to employ up to 40 local trainees in their new distribution centre currently under construction at the new Redbank Motorway Estate. Construction on the 31,400 square metre facility began in October last year to house the Queensland business of the global third party logistics company. The $56 million facility should be completed by June this year. “Jobs, particularly for our young people, are at the heart of the community and provide the means to grow and prosper,” Cr Pisasale said. “Importantly, the company is backing the future of our city and making a real difference by creating new jobs,” Cr Pisasale said. Queensland Regional Operations Manager for DB Schenker Kip Sandercock said the traineeship program had the full support of the DB Schenker CEO Ron Koehler and the company directors. “Our aim is to conduct the training in Ipswich so we can attract local employees. “Part of that training will involve transporting those taking part to our Eagle Farm site for technical on the job training.” Myfreightcareer General Manager Tony Wenham said his company had been appointed by DB Schenker as the group training company and registered training organisation to run the program. “We see our role as a specialist training provider for the global

logistics industry and offer training in warehouse operations, computer skills and international freight forwarding across Australia. “Those completing the traineeships can expect to gain a Certificate 3 in Warehouse Operations and other valuable workplace skills. We see this venture as the beginning of our activities in Ipswich and our intention is to continue to offer similar training programs and traineeships to the Ipswich community. Thongs… Fashion or Faux Pas? Thongs, flip flops, jandals, pluggers; you know the fabulous Queenslander loved footwear! Look down and see just how many of us are wearing them. Pink, blue, white, ones with polka dots, ones with bows on them, ones with diamantes on them. When did this casual footwear best for trips to the beach or a quick dash across the hot bitumen become the everyday must have fashion accessory? Apparently we are not new to the thong with Ancient Egyptians wearing them some six thousand years ago but we are certainly new to them being the go anywhere, dress them up, fashion must have! Men and women teaming their best pair of thongs up with jeans to go out for an evening of fine dining seems so uncouth and under dressed yet many do have a pair of their best pluggers reserved especially for these occasions. So is it fashion or a fashion faux pas? Is it that the thongs are perceived as cheap footwear? Or are they too casual? The big name fashion designers are not holding back with some of their thongs retailing at $595. I love a good pair of thongs and love when I find a great pair with a bit of bling!

I’m really pleased to have the opportunity to communicate with residents through Ipswich Life with my new regular column. I look forward to bringing you news and to celebrate our achievements together. We have so much to be proud of and I look forward to sharing our successes. Vale – Bob Campbell The community was saddened by the recent passing of Bob Campbell affectionately known as ‘Big Bob’. Bob was a proactive member of the Musketeers Sports Club at Tivoli and is well known as a passionate fundraiser for the Lowood Slimmers. Many readers will remember Bob as the kind and jolly fellow who sat outside our shopping centres selling pens that raised much needed funds for breast cancer research. Bob was instrumental in the development of Musketeers, a keen golfer and man of the community. I was privileged to know him and to represent our community at his memorial service. Our Police are the Best! This month marked the annual Rotary Ipswich Police Officer of the Year Awards established in 2012 by the Ipswich North Rotary Club. I was proud to sponsor the event to show the community’s support for our police. Congratulations Detective Sergeant Dave Hunter of the Child Protection and Investigation Unit — our 2014 Police Officer of the Year and to Constable Sam Mosey and Sergeant Neal Porter who also won coveted awards. All 22 nominees make us proud as do each and every officer in our district. Special thanks to Michael Byrne and Richard Horne as well as Sergeant Nadine Webster and Inspector Keith McDonald for their hard work in making it all possible.

Have YOU been paying attention? Sometimes, a show appears on TV with little fanfare and over time builds up an audience. It’s known as a ‘soft’ launch, and with the same concept of having a store open a week or so before the ‘Grand Opening’, it gives everyone a chance to find their feet. Such was the case with the Ten comedy show ‘Have You Been Paying Attention?’ (HYBPA) which is fast becoming a Sunday night tradition for family viewers. The host of the show is long term member of The D-Generation (for the older readers) and Working Dog (for you younger readers), the team behind shows like’ The Panel’, ‘Frontline’, ‘Russell Coight’s All Aussie Adventures’ and of course, the classic Aussie movies ‘The Dish’ and ‘The Castle’. Writer and host Tom Gleisner first appeared on TV screens in the early 1990’s on ABC’s ‘The Late Show’, a live to air comedy show that screened on Saturday nights and influenced an entire generation of comedians and writers. “Its kind of scary to think I’ve been on Tv for nearly thirty years, Tom said from the set of the show in Melbourne. “Occasionally I think of what I’d be doing now if I’d have followed my legal studies, but I must say I’m quite happy with the way things have turned out. “I know ‘The Late Show’ was received favourably, and it went to air live. But with comedy these days people feel safer shooting it, editing it and producing it that way. What surprised us was that we did it for two seasons, and when we started we thought that nobody is home on a Saturday night, everyone is out. “What it proved is that it simply wasn’t the case. Teens were home watching TV, and there

was a sub group of people with kids who couldn’t get a babysitter or just chose to stay home. “When we finished up, I remember saying that someone else would come along and take the reigns for a Saturday night show but it never did. It was a special time, we didn’t really have a chance to stop and take it in. It was full on, we didn’t do much else but put the show together. I guess its possible we may see a live to air comedy show, but I think the last attempt was the ‘Ben Elton’s Live from Planet Earth show, and we all know how that ended up. HYBPA started late last year on the most competitive night of the week, Sunday, and built a following over several weeks, something that was all part of the plan. “It was intentional doing a soft launch, we didn’t really promote it heavily at all. The truth is that comedy can be ruined by over promotion. Shows like ‘Biggest Loser’ and ‘MKR’ thrive on all the promotion, but with comedy its different. The network was really understanding when we said that we wanted to put it on at the back end of the year, with no fanfare and see how it goes. It gave us the chance to knock out the mechanics of it, polish the rough edges and hit it hard in 2014. “We record it on the weekend, as close to the Sunday night screening time as possible, as it’s a topical show, so last thing we want to do is

record it on the Wednesday night and find that its all out of date. “I’m fairly involved in the writing and editing, but like all things at Working Dog we work as a team, with Rob Sitch and Santo Cilauro. The good thing is that there’s never any shortage of material for a show like this.â€? Tom loves having his regular guests on the show, with two in particular always guaranteed to perform well. “Ed Kavalee (from Triple M Brisbane) and SBS’s Sam Pang were regulars on the show, and I love to have them in that anchor role, they are fantastic. I also love having the mixture of our own heritage on the show, people who I’ve worked with previously like Kate Langbroek, Jane Kennedy and Glenn Robbins. “If I had my way, if money was no object, I’d love to have the likes of David Spade on from ‘Just Shoot Me’, he was hilarious in that. That band of American sitcom stars from that time‌like Ray Romano‌they would be great, but that said there is no shortage of local talent and we fill the spots effortlessly. “The network is pretty cluey, they tend of leave us to do our own thing, but after this many years I guess as rule, they trust us that we know what we are doing!â€? Have You Been Paying Attention screens Sunday Nights on TEN.

Autumn already? It’s hard to believe we’re already in autumn; the year really is in full swing with plenty happening around the city. One of the things that make Ipswich great is our strength and resilience as a community. Our willingness to get in and support each other is how we make Ipswich a happy city. The annual Salvos Red Shield Appeal is an opportunity to do just that for a great group of people who do tremendous things for our city. The Red Shield Appeal annual door knock is happening on the weekend of 24 and 25 May. Last year Ipswich raised $120,000 for the Salvos and this year we’re shooting for $125,000, and to get there we need your help. Over that weekend if you can spare a few hours we’d love to see you out on our streets knocking on doors and asking people to spare a few dollars for the cause or alternatively being prepared with a donation when your door is knocked on. If you’ll be away you can always make a donation directly to salvos.org.au. Autism is a condition that affects many families and often requires lifelong management for those affected. The great news is that there is an enormous amount of support out there but it’s vital we work hard to spread awareness of autism and eliminate the stigma. This Go Blue Day on the evening of 2 April we will be lighting up the Civic Centre, Studio 188 and Robelle Domain in the internationally recognised colour of autism awareness to help spread the word. Ipswich and the Somerset region have wonderful schools and Colleges and it’s my pleasure and privilege to be invited go to various events at all of them. I recently attended the St Edmund’s College Foundation Annual Dinner. The Foundation dinner is ably run each year by St Edmund’s College Foundation and raises tens of thousands of dollars. The funds raised go toward the refurbishment of the Edmund Rice building which is the original Christian Brother’s residence and toward assisting disadvantaged students attending the College. The dinner is sponsored by Brothers Leagues Club and I’d like to make special mention of Brothers Leagues Club General Manager, Mark Hennelly who is a St Edmund’s Old Boy and a significant contributor to the Ipswich community. This year’s guest speaker was former Australian cricketer and recently retired ABC radio commentator, Kerry O’Keefe. Like many Australians, I know who Kerry O’Keefe is. He kept the 320 strong crowd entertained with his anecdotes and - I can tell you – that distinctive laugh of his is very infectious! I commend St Edmund’s Christian Brothers’ College, its new Principal Chris Leadbetter and the St Edmund’s College Foundation for its overall contribution to the Ipswich community, including its annual Foundation Dinner. Everyone had a great night of fun, fellowship, food and laughter and we’re all looking forward to next year’s event. Warm regards, Shayne Neumann Member for Blair

Nudie Foodie WITH LOUISA JANE

It’s so fluffy I’m gonna die! Hello Mums! (and all you dads out there who love to bake). This recipe for Marshmallow Frosting with its fluffy, dreamy folds of sugary goodness is a favourite with kids, small and big alike. It’s definitely on the pointy end of the food pyramid but if you want to impress the kids when it comes to birthday cake time, this frosting is sure to win hands down on taste and looks too. I realize I am dedicating one whole article to frosting, but I think there are certain things we need to arm ourselves with such as cooking pasta perfectly, poaching an egg and in this case Marshmallow Frosting!

Place the mixing bowl over the top of the saucepan. It will need to fit tightly and not touch the water. With your hand mixer beat the ingredients for approximately 5 minutes. The mixture will become meringue-like in thickness and beautifully glossy. Lift safely — remembering it’ll be hot — the bowl from the stovetop and place on the counter. Continue to beat until the frosting cools and add in your vanilla extract. Note: Have your cake at the ready and frost immediately with a spatula. This amount covers a triple layer cake.

Marshmallow Frosting Ingredients 3 Egg Whites 200g Sugar 60ml Glucose Syrup 3tbs Water ¼tsp Cream of Tartar Pinch of Salt 1.25-2.5ml Vanilla Extract In a mixing bowl heatproof and fits atop a medium saucepan — place all your ingredients, excluding the Vanilla Extract. Prepare the medium saucepan with 1inch of water and bring to a simmer.

A Little Bit of Ipswich History Cooks at Ipswich Show in 1957 Displays of new kitchen equipment and techniques played a big part in Ipswich Show display pavilions in the 1950s. After being retrenched from Queensland Railways in 1931, electrician Roy Thomas Edwards started his door to door electrical repair business with a bicycle and carrying his tools. From these beginnings his brothers Allan and Mervyn would join the business and RT Edwards started to sell electrical goods. By 1981 they were employing around 110 people and selling all types of household goods and furniture. The company would go on to employ over 320 staff. Roy Edwards was on the Ipswich Council from 1949 to 1961. This image forms part of the Whitehead Collection of more than 5000 photographs. This collection was donated by the Whitehead Family to Ipswich City Council and is a significant record of the history of Ipswich through the eyes of the photographer Francis Arnold Whitehead from 1883 and then by other members of the family.

The Whitehead Studio today is still owned by staff members. The collection is currently being placed on the Picture Ipswich website. St Edmunds: Part of our Community Turning boys into men isn’t an easy task these days. At St Edmunds College Ipswich the part the school plays in this development process forms a proud tradition, and the inclusive nature of ‘St Eddies’ also gives the boys a sense of belonging that will last them a lifetime. St Edmund’s College, an inclusive Catholic community enriched by Ipswich culture and grounded in the Edmund Rice Tradition, educates and inspires young men to live simply and to make a difference. The school has undergone a transformation of late, with Year 7s joining the school from next year. A new learning centre is under construction to give the school added facilities, which will keep it at the forefront of schools in the Ipswich region. Principal Chris Leadbetter is a former ‘Old Boy’ at the school believes that students are ‘Eddies Boys’ for life, and it’s something that all students wear as a badge of honour. “One of the things I’ve discovered about Ipswich is the sense of community is greater than any other school I’ve worked at,” Chris said.“I’ve looked at the history of the school, plus how much sacrifice has gone into building it, and also what it takes to run the place. As an ‘Old Boy’ I have that sense of family, and a sense of what we need to do to continue to make this a great school for now, and for the future.

“St Eddies is not just about education, it’s about transforming people and giving them good outcomes in terms of employment and their future. Transformative education is about making better people. “One of our strengths is our learning programme, and settling new students into the school through mentoring. The senior students are the ones who welcome the years seven and eight boys to the school on their first few days, because we are one community. “The Saturday sports program is a good example of this attitude. It’s about building up rather than knocking down. Boys get involved in everything at St Eddies, there is such a great level of enthusiasm. “At St. Edmunds we embrace technology and this is central to our teaching and learning framework. Students obtain a laptop on arrival and this supports their learning. “We are in the process of finalising our curriculum for year seven and eight in 2015. There needs to be something that is different to primary school for the year sevens. However, the most important thing is about

them having a core teacher where a student has consistency. The Elective structure allows them to explore their talents. The mentoring from the seniors also makes it an exciting time for new students,” Chris said. The new buildings will be finished in about September this year if all goes to plan. “We will have a media centre, a science room, language rooms, extra learning spaces and general learning spaces. At this stage we’ve asked for an extension to those learning spaces to cover the extra numbers we are expecting. The multimedia centre and the Chinese centre will add a great deal to the school, along with state of the art classrooms. “It isn’t exclusively for Year 7s and 8s, but the majority of the new buildings will be for them.” Being back at the school where he was a student means a lot to the Principal, and it’s his life experience that he wants to impress on every student. “When I was a student here at Eddies I learnt one thing…and this is that ‘You Can Do Anything’ from Eddies. “Sometimes kids don’t understand that, so what I hope when they leave here as young

men, is that they understand that if they want it, and are prepared to work hard enough…. they will get there. “We like to have former students come back and talk to the boys, no matter what they do. We recently had Matthew Hickey who started the Ten Tenors, and is a successful barrister. Another person recently was Kev Dwyer who had a trade background and now is a senior official in OHS for the government. We ask them to be totally honest with the boys. They often admit they weren’t at their best all the time, but it instils in our students a focus on self-esteem and ‘how I make a difference to the community’. “Our students are our product. We had four OP1 students last year but we don’t select students solely based on ability. For us, it’s their improvement that is significant. That’s what its all about. Education is about measureable improvement, not a league table of who achieved what.” If you think St Edmunds is the right school for your son, visit the Open Day on May 17th, or contact the school directly for a tour.

Jess loves being the Class Clown Rosewood High School student Jesse Sover has his eyes set on a career on the microphone, making the world laugh, just like his heroes Jerry Seinfeld and Ross Noble. Jesse received a wild card entry into the ‘Class Clown’ Comedy Competition which is held around the country in the hope of finding the next big comedy star. Previous entrants to this contest include the likes of Josh Thomas and Tom Ballard. Heats are held all over the country and the winners from each state go to complete in Melbourne at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival. Jesse knew a couple of years ago that he wanted to take part but didn’t think he was ready. Now, at age 15, he might still be too young to take part in open mic nights in a licensed venue, but it didn’t stop him making the state finals with a wildcard entry. “My drama teacher told me about it two years ago and I thought I would hold off for a white till I felt ready to do it,” Jess said. “This year I’d been preparing it for a while and she said I should do it, so she signed me up! “Class Clowns is for comics in school in years 10, 11 and 12. You get to do heats and then if successful go to the state finals in Brisbane and if you win the state finals you go to Melbourne for the grand final,” Jesse said. The heats and finals were held at the Brisbane Powerhouse as part of the Brisbane

Comedy Festival which this year was headlined by Frank Woodley and Stephen K. Amos. Jesse got inspiration for his material from something as simple as mowing the grass at home, which turned into a full routine. “On stage, I do a story about how I was mowing the lawn, and after having a break I found my dog doing his business on the grass. I wrote what happened down, and thought it was a good idea to work on. “I was a little nervous, but I think you have to be, I reckon it helps. Being up there on stage was fun, it was so exciting. I got a wild card to the state finals, and the whole thing has been such a good experience.” Jesse hopes that this could be the first step in a career in the spotlight. “This could be a career choice, but I guess you have to have some life experience to do this kind of thing, so I might get a job to keep me going and then start doing open mic nights. “The problem now is that I’m underage and most venues I can’t get into, but that’s okay, I’m a patient person.”

West Moreton Anglican College (WMAC) Year 9 student Samuel Jacobi was the winner of a competition for International Pi Day, and recalled Pi to the361 places! Remember that ‘Pi’ is the term given to the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. The digits never end or repeat in any known sequence, so there is no discernible pattern a student can learn. The competition was in two sections: for Middle and Senior School. The Senior School winner, Year 12 student

Yuri Sugita, was able to recite Pi to 100 decimal places. The Middle School winner, Year 9 student Samuel Jacobi, recited Pi to an impressive 361 decimal places. Miss Suzanne Garvey, Head of Mathematics, and International Pi Day competition organiser said, “The aim was for students to celebrate the day but also for them to understand that they are capable of great things if they set their minds to a task.” Photo: Samuel Jacobi with the ‘handful’ of numbers he recalled to win the ‘Pi’ Competition.

Queensland Urban Utilities CEO, Louise Dudley, said the hydrants which were located on Limestone and East Streets will be given to the Ipswich City Council and Queensland Fire and Emergency Services. “These fire hydrants were among the first pillar hydrants installed in Ipswich in the 1950’s,” she said. “Located outside the city’s old cinema in East Street and at the back of the Ipswich Art Gallery, they provide a nostalgic reminder of years gone by. Mystery still surrounds the exact origin of the hydrants. Usually they have a foundry mark but the only identification on these hydrants is the name ‘John’ which is thought to be related to the manufacturer. Ipswich City Council Infrastructure Committee Chairperson Councillor Cheryl Bromage said council was pleased that Queensland Urban Utilities was ensuring that these pieces of infrastructure were preserved for the future. “It is fascinating to consider the role that these hydrants would have played in the city

in the past,” she said. “Reference was made in local media about pillar hydrants back in 1936 with the city council advocating for their installation, but stating that no action was recommended at that time owing to there being no funds available for this purpose.” Assistant Commissioner Peter Beauchamp said Ripley Fire Station would proudly exhibit the pillar fire hydrant beside other important fire artefacts already on display. “This fire hydrant is an important piece of historical evidence to demonstrate to future generations how firefighters accessed water supplies during times of emergency,” he said. The hydrants will be sandblasted before being fully restored and be put on display at the Ipswich Art Gallery along with the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services historical display at Ripley Fire Station.

Cyclists everywhere on Ride2 School Day

The streets around Springfield Lakes were filled with cyclists recently for the National Ride2School Day. Ipswich City Council Division 9 Councillor Sheila Ireland said as part of the Healthy Active School Travel (HAST) program, students, parents and teachers from Springfield Lakes State School had ridden/scooted and walked to school from Olive Springs Park. Cr Ireland said after arriving at school students enjoyed a healthy breakfast. “This year marks the eighth National Ride2School Day and the day is being celebrated by more than 250,000 students from right across Australia,” she said. “The day is designed to highlight the benefits of riding to school and creating an active travel culture within a school community. Cr Ireland said the Ride2School Day activity was part of the HAST program being run by council. “We want to make Ipswich one of the healthiest communities in Australia.” City Infrastructure Committee Chairperson Councillor Cheryl Bromage said the HAST program was all about encouraging Ipswich children to make healthier choices when they travel to and from school each day. “Council is working with the participating schools to develop travel plans and deliver a program that will increase active transport within these schools,” she said. “If students live only a short distance away, walking and riding to school

together is a great way to encourage active life choices. “It is also a great way for parents to enjoy a morning and afternoon walk or ride when taking their children to and from school.” The Department of Transport and Main Roads, Queensland Health and council have worked together to roll out the HAST program, which is an Australian Government initiative under the National Partnership Agreement for Preventative Health. The price of live music? Like thousands of Australians in the last week, I tried in vain to get tickets to see Katy Perry. While I’m not a fan, my daughter is, so I thought it would make a great birthday gift for her. A week later and I’m still sans tickets. On closer inspection of the layout for these sold-out concerts it seems that about 90% of them were either presold or are part of “VIP” packages where you get a programme, maybe a t-shirt and a free soft drink, which more than justifies the added $150 to the cost of the ticket. Apparantly. Of course, there ARE tickets available up front for just a week’s wages per ticket… yeah, I can afford that. Now I don’t think I’m THAT old, but I remember the days when I went to see the likes of Duran Duran and Tears for Fears at Festival Hall. Every single ticket was the same price , just $20, and if I wanted to buy a T-shirt that was about $7. Seriously. Yes kids…the “Good Old Days” don’t sound so rubbish NOW do they? Compare this to when I took my son to see Coldplay at Suncorp. After buying a ticket, a t-shirt and a drink I don’t think I had much change from $200, and we won’t

even START on ticket sale websites who charge you $8.65 to post a 60c letter and a credit card processing fee when you have no other option but to use your credit card! GRRRRRRRR… Needless to say, I’m NOT going to see The Rolling Stones or Robbie Williams later in the year because to be honest, I can’t justify several hundred dollars for one night out. So my question is this. WHO is the person that decided that us concert goers are happy to pay $300+ for a ticket on the grounds I will get a soft drink and a flouro headband to ‘keep forever’? These days several music festivals are going broke or being cancelled, artists are complaining about the lack of bums on seats at concerts and record companies bitch and moan about illegal downloading. Did it occur to any of these people that the vast majority of us are not on Rock Star wages? Something needs to change, and until it does, I guess I’ll be staying home for a few years. Vote with your feet Australia. Stand up for a better deal for music fans! Oh, and if you DO have Katy Perry tickets you don’t want, please let me know……. E: darren@strikepublications.com.au

Bicycle learning facility now open An off-road bicycle learning facility has been constructed in Brassall to give young cyclists a chance to safely learn how to ride their bicycles. Councillor Cheryl Bromage said she had been keen to see the existing facility in Sutton Park expanded. “I felt that the enlargement of the existing bike learning facility was a great idea with Sutton Park being located between primary and secondary schools,” she said. Cr Bromage said a valued feature of the bicycle education facility was the electronic LED traffic lights that could be set by a timer or activated by a pedestrian push button. “This gives young riders the chance to experience the same conditions that riders face out on the city’s streets but in a safe and controlled environment.” Cr Bromage said the aim of the facility was to teach budding riders how to follow correct road rules, without having to navigate traffic on the city’s roads. “We want to encourage young cyclists to develop a level of safe road behaviour and basic knowledge of road rules.” Cr Bromage said council had worked in conjunction with the 24//7 Cycling Safety Fund to develop the bicycle education facility that provided families and children in the area with an extra recreational activity. “It is also located in close proximity to the Brassall Bikeway which means people can ride along the bikeway, to and from the bike learning facility.

“The new facility includes a pedestrian crossing, an off-road track, a flat cul-de-sac area for beginners to learn to mount and dismount, an overtaking lane, a one-way street, a t-intersection, a roundabout, a pedestrian crossing and a speed hump.” “The project has been completed in time for the National Ride to School and overall the education facility is designed to encourage people to get out and about on their bicycles, enjoying the outdoors and being active.” Below: Ipswich City Council Division 6 Councillor Cheryl Bromage with Charli Dobinson on the track.

Safe city cameras set high standard Since the first CCTV cameras were installed in 1994, Ipswich’s Safe City Camera Network has grown into one of the most modern digital CCTV systems in Australia, and to mark 20 years, Ipswich City Council will be hosting a Safe City Conference. The network’s success in crime reduction and prevention has sparked interest from around the country and from June 10-13, Ipswich will host the 2014 Safe City Conference for security experts to share their knowledge. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said Safe City was launched when the first 20 analogue cameras were installed in 1994 following calls from the public to reduce crime in Ipswich. “Add another 200 cameras and a state-ofthe-art control room and you have one of the best safety initiatives by a local council in Australia,” Cr Pisasale said. “The Safe City network has reduced crime in the Ipswich CBD by 70 per cent and has also been credited with delivering a 49 per cent reduction in drug, alcohol and related substance abuse in Ipswich Central.” Safe City cameras capture live images from the city centre, suburbs, major parks and as far afield as the rural township of Rosewood, transmitting them via wireless and optic fibre technology to the surveillance room, which is monitored 24/7. “We also provide a live video link to Ipswich police communications which means that officers have the edge when dealing with a crime in progress or pursuing offenders,” Cr Pisasale said. “The early intervention and direct link with police has played a significant role in reducing crime and has improved people’s perceptions

about the level of crime in Ipswich.” Cr Pisasale said the conference is for industry professionals, law enforcement officers, military police, security officers, local government management, CEOs, mayors, councillors and others with a keen interest or involvement in the security industry. “A conference of this calibre will attract delegates from across Australia and New Zealand and is a tremendous coup for Ipswich. Highlights of the 2014 Safe City Conference include: Master classes hosted by industry professionals CCTV technology Designing a system – the secrets of success Enhancing community safety through environmental design Funding your CCTV system Sex, lies and video tapes – governance Who is babysitting ‘big brother’ The future of CCTV in public spaces Tour of Ipswich Safe City Trade displays from conference sponsors Registration is now open for the 2014 Safe City Conference which is on from June 10-13 at the Ipswich Civic Centre. Broadband for Seniors A Federal Government grant has been renewed, which will allow seniors in the Ipswich region access to free lessons on how to use the internet.

Federal member for Blair, Shayne Neumann, recently joined SeniorNet trainers and graduates of the Broadband for Seniors program to discover the difference it was making in their lives. “Broadband for Seniors kiosks allow older Australians living in Ipswich and the Somerset Region to stay connected through broadband internet,” Mr Neumann said. “These kiosks provide senior Australians with free broadband access, free computer training and access to up-to-date technology like web cameras, so they can better keep in touch with family and friends.” “I’ve met local seniors here who have the confidence to re-enter the workforce or advance in their careers thanks to the programs run by SeniorNet Ipswich,” he said. SeniorNet coordinator, Colleen Freeman said that many of these trainees have gone on to join SeniorNet Ipswich where they can undertake further training in a variety of courses and workshops. “We’re here to help build their community participation and social inclusion while addressing the issue of older Australians feeling isolated and left behind in a technological age. “Our motto is seniors helping seniors with computers and the internet, and we provide a supportive, friendly environment for local seniors to learn how to turn on a computer and start

using it,” Mrs Freeman said. Mrs Freeman, said she was pleased to have had the Broadband for Seniors funding contract renewed and to have received upgraded technology. “The recently installed Windows 8 touchscreen computer means trainers who are dedicated to developing new programs for beginners will undertake training in the use of the new equipment.” The grant allows SeniorNet to deliver four free lessons to seniors as well as providing valuable information to ensure internet safety. Mrs Freeman said that in 2014 greater emphasis will be placed on security and fraud prevention. The first presentation on Internet security and fraud prevention will be held on Monday 31st March at Banjo’s Bar, Trades Hall, 4 Bell Street Ipswich. For more information see the listing in this issues’s ‘What’s On’ section. Mr Neumann said that the one thing he keeps hearing is how good the instructors are. “The SeniorNet Ipswich instructors are all volunteers and many of them have not taught before. But they have all had to face the hurdle of using a computer and they run the program to suit their students.” Seniors living in Ipswich and the Somerset region interested in doing the Broadband for Seniors program or learning more about computers and modern communication skills can contact SeniorNet Ipswich on 3281 4414. Movie stuntman is at the top of his game It’s not every day that someone who has spent a career putting his life on the line for the entertainment of millions opens up about the highlights of a job that would frighten the life out of most people. For America’s top stunt-coordinator Kevin Scott, who has worked on countless movies like Die Hard 4.0, Spiderman 3 and Salt, its his work on the action flick ‘Lone Survivor’ that has really got him noticed, and resulted in a recent Screen Actors Guild (SAG) award for his work on the movie. It is one of the highest honours a stunt team can get. The one scene that is getting all the attention from ‘Lone Survivor’ is when four Navy SEALs have to throw themselves down a rocky mountainside. Every bump and bruise has to be shown realistically while at the same time keeping the stuntmen safe, something that was initially a logistical nightmare for Kevin.

12 IPSWICHLIFE

“I’ve been working with (director) Peter Berg since 2009, and ‘Lone Survivor’ had been a topic of discussion for many years, he told me that I had to read this book,” Kevin said from his Los Angeles home. “He wanted to tell the story of the brotherhood, of these four guys and he didn’t want it to be ‘Hollywood’. It had to be unlike anything we’d done before. That was the focus. Once we spent time with SEALs and with (author) Marcus Luttrell , it became clear to us that it was our job to get it right and do it in a way it hadn’t been done before.” There are a couple of scenes in the movie that are getting all the attention, when the SEALs are faced with no option but to

literally throw themselves down a rocky mountainside to escape gunfire. It is so realistic you feel every bump and bruise. “It was definitely a highlight of my career, and probably the most stressful. When we discussed that scene with Marcus, of what he remembers, how he felt at that time…we looked at places with the attitude that I was GOING to fall off this rock. These guys had to jump in the real life event…they had no choice. We couldn’t put pads in the ground as it would show up on screen. We ended up with four incredibly talented stunt guys willing to put their bodies on their line and also be prepared to get a huge beating up on a daily basis. “It wasn’t until the second day of filming I knew we were in the right direction. We shot one of the fall scenes, and I watched the footage seeing a guy get a boot to the back of the head. Everyone came over and looked at it. I’m there saying THIS is what we want… let’s go to work.” The stunt work on the movie has been well received, and even earned Kevin a SAG award for this team who worked on the movie. “Every family member of the team that has seen the movie has loved it. Service personnel around the world also love it, and

to have our peers recognise our work with the SAG award…its like a trifecta of praise for us. We needed to get it right, we wanted audiences to feel what it was like for these guys, and I think we achieved that. “Peter Berg is an amazing director. He has this ability how to motivate a crew, and in telling this story he wanted the actors to not go back to cushy trailers at lunch, he wanted them in the woods. We were high up on a Mexican mountain, and he told everyone to bring their A-game and if they couldn’t go home now. Things like that all added to getting everyone on the same page.” Lone Survivor is in cinemas now. See the review at www.ipswichlife.com.au Above: Kevin Scott with Lone Survivor Director Peter Berg. Defence Force recruiting targets schools A new initiative by Defence Force Recruiting is putting students in the hot seat at school with the new display unit that gives kids the chance to see what it it like to fly a Super Hornet fighter aircraft. It’s all part of the push to recruit the next generation of Air Force personnel, plus a chance to showcase the opportunities that can come up not only for staff, but particularly for women in the forces. Squadron Leader Amanda Gosling accompanies the display to 20 locations around Queensland, where high school students and find out about the Australian Defence Force as a career option, and the first school to get the display was Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School in Ipswich.

The interactive display gives students the chance to see what it is like to not only fly a Super Hornet but also try their hand at combat and air traffic control on the simulators. Squadron Leader Gosling said that that experience is designed to get students interested in the Air Force as a career choice. “There are lots of exciting jobs, but this is one of the more difficult ones to understand, in what it is you are required to do to be a pilot of a Super Hornet, but the Air Force has many different jobs available. “Ipswich Girls’ Grammar is the first school in the state to see this new unit. An experience like this is great, as you can see the interest in something thaty might not have thought of previously,” Amanda said. There is a drive at the moment to get the message out, especially to women that their skills are need in the armed forces, and the rate is lifting every year. “The Air Force has about an 18% participation rate of women to men, but in some key areas, aviation being one of them, the rate is a lot lower, so

things like this are is great to get more women into jobs. This gives them a little bit of a taste and exploration for it. There are lots of other jobs like technicians, engineering for starters. “We’re creating awareness of a career in the Air Force. It’s a really interesting challenge and very rewarding being part of Australia’s defence forces. While diversity is important, its about increasing cababilities in the whole system, male or female…everything is based on merit and performance,” Amanda added. Anyone interested in a career in the Air Force should visit www.defencejobs.gov.au/airforce Left: SQNLDR Amanda Gosling shows Erin Fodor the F/A-18F Super Hornet cockpit simulator. This however is a promising and exciting beer to get on tap. Out of the bottle you get a classic Witbier flavour with subtle citrus flavours. As for its percentage coming in with a whopping 6.2%abv it doesn’t feel like you’re drinking something that strong, rather a mellow but distinct alcohol flavour and “easy” drinking beer. Be sure to keep an eye

out for this one as it will only be better out of the cold alehouse taps. Also some things to look out for which will be coming on tap soon are; Hasslehop, Burleigh brewers, Hop Hog, Feral brewing co and a range of single hop special releases from 4 Pines brewing co. Also head over to Harry Browns at Yamanto and get yourself a 4 Hearts Pale Ale, which is finally available in stubbies.

We just keep getting better

Favourite places in South East Qld

When we spoke to Kate Miller Heidke recently we couldn’t resist asking the singer what her fave places are in our corner of the world. Check out Kate’s new album ‘O,Vertigo’ which is racing up the charts.

1. Rainbow beach I’ve been going there since I was a kid, my grandparents live there and it just evokes that magical old era. There’s something so lazy and idyllic about it. Paradise. 2. Brookfield My in-laws live there, and I love the semi-ruralness of it. I was even married in Brookfield Hall. It’s a bit of country in the city. 3. Maleny We just had a holiday there, and I love the rain and storms. You’re so high up, and it rained non-stop for four days. I was in heaven. The rainforest, the sounds… lovely. 4. Beaudesert I just did a camping holiday in the ranges there with a bunch of friends. I love how cool it is there up in the ranges. 5. South Bank That view across the river from South Bank, especially at sunset… just gorgeous. I love swimming there after dark, its so peaceful.

Super Hornet on show in Singapore

Air Force F/A-18F Super Hornets of No 1 Squadron based at RAAF Amberley flew precision aerobatic manouvres at the recent Singapore Air Show. Previously the domain of the F-111s based at Amberley, dazzling crowds with its signature ‘dump and burn’ showpiece until its retirement in 2010, the RAAF’s frontline combat aviation force sat out the flying display at the 2012 Singapore Airshow as it continued its transition to the Boeing Super Hornets that replaced the F-111. While the Super Hornet has been a regular on the national air show circuit, outside Australia the displays have been dominated by Boeing or US Navy pilots, until now. To date, the RAAF has received all 24 Super Hornets ordered in 2009, and now has plans to field an additional 12 EA-18G Growler electronic warfare aircraft that will begin arriving in 2017.

The RAAF’s first pilot instructor has begun training in the United States on US Navy EA-18Gs, and that six RAAF crews, each comprising one pilot and one electronic warfare officer, will train on the EA-18G at US Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington State during the next three years. Following on from the Singapore Air Show display the Super Hornets also put on a spectacular flying display at the Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show at the birthplace of the Royal Australian Air Force, RAAF Base Point Cook west of Melbourne. The Super Hornets and Growlers will fly alongside the F/A-18A/B Hornets that have been in RAAF service since 1984. Defence plans to replace these ‘Classic’ Hornets with the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter later this decade. The first two RAAF pilots to fly the F-35 will soon travel to the United States to begin conversion to type training.

Air Force beats Army in tri-Service League final The Air Force Jets rugby league team beat the Australian Army team convincingly in the final of the 2014 Inter-Service competition held at the home of the Ipswich Jets team at North Ipswich Reserve. The three Services competed over three separate games in a 'round robin' format. To reach the final the Air Force Jets narrowly beat the Navy team 32 points to 30. Apart from an exciting game of Rugby League, the Ipswich Jets hosted a Defence Force Appreciation Day that recogised the contribution of our Defence Force personnel. On static display were military vehicles, World War II re-enactment groups, and an Army Kiowa reconnaissance helicopter dropped in for the day. Earlier, the Luxury Paints Ipswich Jets team took on Wynnum Manly, previously unbeaten in the Queensland Cup. On a hot afternoon the lighter, faster Jets ran the opposition ragged to take out a convincing victory 32 - 22.

‘Rhinos’ take on ‘Vipers’ in air combat training

Hornet versus ‘Red Bull’ Synergies between fast jets and fast cars were highlighted on the eve of the Melbourne Grand Prix, when Red Bull Racing brought their Formula One (F1) demonstration car and driver, Daniel Ricciardo, to RAAF East Sale as part of a Defence Force recruiting campaign aimed at finding the next generation of Air Force pilots. During two days of filming, technicians from both Red Bull and Air Force had the opportunity to compare maintenance techniques while observing first hand how each group operated in support of achieving superiority as a professional team.

Part of the activities on the runway at the air base in Gippsland included a drag-race between the F1 car and an F/A-18F Hornet of No 3 Squadron. While Daniel Riccardo ripped his RB10 race car off the line it was overtaken by the Hornet fighter powered by two F404-GE-400 Turbofans each producing 18,000lbs of thrust in full afterburner - accelerating to about 180 knots before getting airborne, leaving the F1 car in its jetwash. Photo: Daniel Riccardo scorches off the line as the F/A18 pilot puts on full power during filming at RAAF Base East Sale east of Melbourne. (Defence)

F/A-18F Super Hornet pilots are testing their air combat skills against F-16 ‘Viper’ pilots from the US Air Force during Exercise Lightning Viper now underway in the skies over southeast Queensland. About 120 USAF personnel and up to 10 F-16 aircraft from the United States Air Force (USAF) 18th Aggressor Squadron at Eielson Air Force Base Alaska have deployed to Australia for the air combat exercise. The exercise enables RAAF Super Hornet aircrews to practise Large Force Employment tactics against the best adversaries in the world. The simulated air combat sorties provide Pilots, Weapon System Officers and the E-7A Wedgetail Air Battle Managers, with training that they would normally only receive when deployed on overseas exercises such as

Exercise Red Flag in the US. Fresh from completing Exercise Cope North in Guam, the 18th Aggressor Squadron’s role in Lightning Viper is to provide full time adversary support against No 1 Squadron by using enemy tactics, techniques and procedures to give the most realistic simulation of air combat available. Above: It’s all smiles now but things will get serious airborne for CO 1 Squadron, Wing Commander Stephen Chappell and US Air Force CO 8th Aggressor Squadron Lieutenant Colonel Phil Stodick. Below: An F-16 ‘Viper’ takes off from RAAF Amberley on a simulated air combat mission. (Defence)

Strategies for a Windfall Windfalls come to you by selling a home or business, or through an inheritance. But you can lose a windfall as fast as you receive it, because windfalls involve large lump sums of money that you may not have experience in managing. So what do you do with a windfall in the short to medium term? Let’s assume you want to park the cash for between six months and two years in preparation to buy another home or start a new business in the near future. I would begin by consulting an accountant to understand your tax exposure. This could save you tens of thousands in taxes. Next, I would tell anyone without investment expertise to consult with a financial planner. But before that, you should get up to speed on the “cash” and other straightforward investments that are available to you. Let’s look at several different options that offer low risk and regular income. Because inflation is running at 2.7 per cent annually, you won’t generate much yield above your cost of living by leaving all your money in a standard savings account. You can look into

‘bonus’ savings accounts which offer better returns than traditional at-call products. But be careful. Bonus accounts often promise high interest rates for three or four months — or some other catch — before dropping back to an unattractive rate. You might also consider term deposits of between three and 12 months. They generally provide better interest rates than at-call deposits, however, you should know that your money will be locked away for the term. Have a look at actively managed cash funds, which invest in deposits and floating-rate Australian bank bonds. Look for products that allow you to move your money in and out, and those where the fund manager is invested alongside you. Another option is ASX listed bonds. The more highly-rated bank bonds are paying between 4 and 5 per cent annually. You can buy these yourself in the same way you buy shares, or you can outsource the decisionmaking to professionals via an actively managed cash fund. Finally, don’t put all your money into one solution. Spread it across an at-call account, TDs, cash funds and ASX bonds. And, if you’re not being advised and you’re not an expert, don’t feel pressured into buying equities or any higher risk investmen. MotoGP’s Lorenzo the public face of Alfa Romeo Alfa Romeo has signed two-time MotoGP champion Jorge Lorenzo to be its premier brand ambassador in elite motorcycle racing during 2014. Lorenzo will sport Alfa Romeo logos on his racing suit and helmet during this year’s championship season, which started last weekend in Qatar. The Spaniard will also drive the official World Superbike Championship Alfa Romeo 4C safety car at select rounds of that series. Lorenzo recently got acquainted with Alfa Romeo’s product, driving both a Giulietta and 4C at the company’s Balocco test track in Italy. “After trying out Alfa Romeo’s cars on this track, above all the 4C, I can say that they are beautiful but also high performance,” he said. “They have a powerful engine, practically at motorsport level, and they are great fun on corners, acceleration and when closing the throttle before downshifting. “The Giulietta is a car for the city, not the track, but you can really have fun with it nonetheless. On the road I nearly always drive a car and not a bike. Bikes are a bit inconvenient, above all when it’s cold and rainy. “The Giulietta is really comfortable on the inside, and the exterior reflects Alfa Romeo’s DNA: a style which is both elegant and modern at the same time. I like that.”

“Proton is a brand from Malaysia that is now owned by the DRB-Hicom, the same company that puts together Mercedes Benz,, for one, and many other luxury cars in Asia. Their new range, which has just been launched, includes three models, all with the 5/5/5 offer. “The three models are the 7 seater ‘Exora’, the ‘Preve’ sedan and the one that is really getting noticed, and that’s the ‘Suprima S’ five door hatchback.” The Suprima S is amazing value for money, and has features beyond what you’d expect for a car of its kind. “Proton are fair dinkum now, with the new company behind it there is Lotus technology in the steering system, leather seats, built in GPS, leather wheel….so many features. Slowly but surely Proton are building the network around Australia, and we are so excited to have them here in Ipswich at Boettcher’s,” Greg said. “Keep in mind that a few years ago nobody had heard of Hyundai or Great Wall, and look at them now. Proton is going to make an impact with drivers, I’m sure of that. If you go to the factory in Malaysia, right next door is the Lotus factory, so they utilise the Lotus handling technology in the ‘Suprima S’, and they handle fantastically,” Greg said. “I’m excited because I’ve seen a major shift in this brand and they are great cars. “Everyone will know Proton very soon, as the massive marketing campaign kicks in and you will see these cars on Ipswich roads, plus with the five years warranty, servicing and roadside assist, you don’t have to worry about big servicing fees.” For more information on all things Proton, contact Boettcher Motors on 3282 2722.

Toyota has launched a new seven-seat Kluger sportsutility vehicle (SUV) that brings together the best in style, technology, comfort, capability and safety at value pricing. The third-generation Kluger is designed to meet the needs of families and business buyers with an expanded array of standard features, a host of in-cabin technologies and increased cargo capacity. Engineers have liberated more interior space by developing a longer and wider body, adopting a new space-efficient doublewishbone rear suspension, and moving all three rows of seats forward. As a result, the third row is easier to access, the two-seat bench is wider and offers more comfort, while the luggage area behind is larger, expanding capacity by one-third. Kluger’s driving experience is more dynamic, with new technologies and optimised steering and suspension that have undergone significant local development to suit the demands of Australian conditions. AWD models include standard Dynamic Torque Control for maximum traction and cornering ability and Downhill Assist Control that automatically controls the brakes to maintain a constant low speed when descending slopes, reducing wheel lock. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said development of the new Kluger focused on visual appeal, developing an better package for families, and providing greater driver enjoyment. “The styling is aggressive, enhancing Kluger’s emotional appeal to attract new customers in addition to impressing our strong band of loyal owners,” Mr Cramb said. Kluger’s exterior design is sleek and strong, displaying a more aggressive face, subtle sculpting of the sides, prominent wheel arches and a newly designed tailgate. A totally redesigned interior raises the bar on overall quality with premium materials, soft-touch surfaces, bright accents and greater refinement and functionality.

Smart storage solutions include an underdash tray shaped to prevent items sliding out and a 24.5-litre roll-top centre console that doubles as an armrest and is big enough to store a large handbag. Kluger is available in three well-equipped grades — GX, GXL and Grande. Each is available in two-wheel (2WD) or all-wheeldrive (AWD) and provides even better value than before with prices starting at $40,990* — $2,200 less than the previous-model equivalent. AWD is an optional $4,000 extra across the range, down $500. All Kluger grades feature a 3.5-litre V6 engine and new six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission with selectable manual sequential shifting and artificial intelligence that adapts to driving styles and provides engine braking on downhill runs and minimises gear hunting. Fuel economy has been improved while maintaining power output at more than 200kW. Every Kluger has a reversing camera, rear parking sensors, seven airbags, cruise control, air-conditioning, front fog lamps, six-speaker display audio with Toyota Link multimedia and a multi-information display. It picks up 19-inch wheels, projector LED headlamps with Auto High Beam, tilt-andslide moonroof, ventilated front seats, eightinch display audio with navigation and DAB+ digital radio, second-row sunshades, nine-inch rear-seat entertainment system with Blu-ray player, power-operated tailgate, woodgrainlook pattern highlights and a full-colour 4.2inch multi-information display.
