WHAT’S NEW IN
THEATRE
‘Phantom’ on stage in Ipswich Those old enough to remember the 1980s, know that ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ had people around the world enthralled. More than 28 years later it is still playing in London, and the show has been running on Broadway for 25 The stats on ‘Phantom’ are astounding: winner of multiple staging and production awards, seen by more than 100 million people in 144 cities across 27 countries, and one of the best loved shows ever! Now, for the first time this most famous show of all time is coming to Ipswich Civic Centre, in a community production - starring Ipswich’s own Robert Shearer. The Phantom of the Opera tells the story of a masked figure that lurks beneath the catacombs of the Paris Opera House, exercising a reign of terror over all who inhabit it. He becomes infatuated with Christine, an innocent young soprano, and devotes himself to having her by employing all of the devious methods at his command. Having been in high demand as a leading tenor throughout Australia, Robert Shearer has returned home to play the role of The Phantom. Robert grew up in Ipswich and attended Ipswich Grammar School. Director of the production, Sherryl-Lee Secomb says that bringing such a big production to the stage, especially in a community theatre environment, presents its own challenges . “In 2012 the rights became available for amateur productions to do this show in Australia,” Sherryl-Lee said. “It was done in
Victoria and then a Brisbane company did it, and to get permission you do have to apply to do it, and show them that you have the technical resources. “There’s been a number of performances of this across the nation, so they have loosened the grip a little. The thing about this show is that it attracts good singers, they want to be involved and community theatre isn’t what it was 20 years ago. There are a lot of professional actors or singers on ‘down time’, and there are a lot of skills out there at this level. There were a lot of people who auditioned for this. “Phantom has everything…pyrotechnics, the music, the story. It’s such a spectacle and obviously hard to do all that in smaller productions but we have the advantage of having the Ipswich Civic Centre as the venue. “Another plus is our vocal coach, who has worked on Phantom professionally overseas, so the thing about this show is that we got lots of people who wanted to support a local production. Ipswich people are very proud. One of our ‘Christines’ and a chorus girl were also in the recent production of ‘La Boheme’ which was a big hit in Ipswich recently.” “Phantom is a big production, and is not easy to produce, but luckily there is a great source of sets and costumes.
“It all comes down to budget of course. You have to make the most of your financial resources. The advantage Ipswich has, is that because the show isn’t a premier production we can purchase sets and hire costumes from other productions, so we’re not working from scratch. For example, the first production in South East Queensland cost over $250,000 to put on, whereas the professional production spent that on just a chandelier!” Sherryl-Lee says, “As a spectacle, Phantom of the Opera is great. It’s just one of those shows that if you put all the elements together you are guaranteed to walk out feeling satisfied. It’s larger than life. Everyone should see Phantom of the Opera at least once in their lifetime!” Phantom of the Opera is on for a limited season at the Ipswich Civic Centre from September 12 for five performances only. WHAT’S GOING ON
CITY VIBE Turning rubbish into energy What happens to rubbish taken from Ipswich homes and put into landfill? Well, it might surprise to know that 1200 homes In Ipswich are being powered for a year by exactly that… decomposing rubbish. A new gas power generator has been switched on at Swanbank, which turns gas from rotting rubbish into electric energy. It works by drilling holes into the landfill which collect the methane gas given off by decomposing rubbish underground. This gas is then used to power a generator which then feeds the power back into the grid…enough to power 1200 Ipswich homes a year. Being the 24th such facility across the nation, these generators produce enough energy each year to power 130,000 Australian homes. Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane officially opened the $3 million project recently along with LMS Energy CEO John Falzon and Ipswich councillor Sheila Ireland. LMS operations manager Lyne Mander described how the facility works. “As the rubbish breaks down in the landfill this generates methane gas. We put in a series of wells to extract that gas, then it goes into pipes which goes to a 16 cylinder engine which in turn drives an alternator. That then generates electricity which goes back into the power grid. Annually there’s enough energy produced for 1200 Ipswich homes. “As the years of rubbish rots, it produces methane. There’s not too many landfills now that aren’t doing something to collect this gas. Methane gas, if left, would go into the atmosphere which is not only bad for the environment, but creates a gassy smell which people don’t like. You can also burn off that gas, but
collecting it makes environmental sense.” The figures are staggering on how much gas the rotting rubbish produces. “This runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. People don’t realise how much gas the rubbish is producing, which is around about 3 tonnes a hour,” Lyle said. “You do the maths…people are always shocked when they realise how much gas would be going into the atmosphere if it wasn’t being collected. You add that up over all the landfill sites across the country and that’s a lot of gas that would otherwise be going to waste.” Federal Industry Minister Ian Macfarlane officially opened the facility. “These facilities play a great part in solving the issue of gas. Things like this have a very great role in the future and I hope next time I come back to Ipswich I see more of these generators!” Below: Federal Industry Minister Ian McFarlane and LMS Energy CEO John Falzon, at the official opening of the facility (right) at Swanbank.

Adventure racing coming to Kholo Following on from the success of Spartan Race, The Colour Run and Tough Mudder, ‘In2Adventure’ will stage a weekend of adventure racing in Ipswich this November. The fittest athletes and those keen to have a go can look forward to a packed racing schedule of mountain biking, trail running and obstacle courses across the beautiful Kholo region, said Councillor David Morrison, Parks, Sport and Recreation Committee Chairperson. “This will be the first time the phenomenally popular Adventure Race Australia Series touches down in Ipswich,” Cr Morrison said. “Adventure racing is a sport that is growing in popularity by leaps and bounds as more people embrace the opportunity to challenge themselves against each other and the elements. “This is an opportunity to try something totally different in the great outdoors and to take part in friendly but gruelling competition,” Cr Morrison said. Adventure racing is a rapidly expanding sector of Australian sports tourism, which encapsulates 5% of all tourism undertaken nationally. This equates to a national annual expenditure of $3 billion, when all travel, accommodation, hospitality and entry fees are taken into account. Identified by the CSIRO as one of six megatrends in the tourism sector, adventure races tend to attract wealthier tourists who spend generously during their stays. “We are expecting, based on similar events, approximately 600 attendees at this inaugural Adventure Race Australia Series with a projected growth of 30% in subsequent years’ events,” Cr Morrison said.
“This will be an enormous boon for the local economy and showcase Ipswich as a desirable sporting and leisure destination to this growing group of adventure competitors. “With plans already underway for events in 2015 and 16, adventure racing is set to become one of the most popular fixtures on the Ipswich sporting calendar.” It is expected there will be two races on the day, with a twelve or eighteen hour maximum time limit. Participants will be expected to run, mountain bike and kayak their way around the course. Below: Mayor Pisasale (back) with Cr David Morrison and In2Adventure Race Director Simon Lazenby.

Cadets plant memorial garden Naval cadets from Training Ship IPSWICH have planted a memorial garden to coincide with the 100-year anniversary of the start of World War I using cuttings from plants that were growing in one of the most famous military sites in the world With some help from the local Bunnings store, the cadets planted Rosemary, in the hope that the garden will be fully ready for ANZAC Day commemorations next year. SBLT Jon Klaebe said the cadets had been learning about World War I recently, and wanted to get involved in doing something to commemorate the event. “The cadets have been learning about World War I, and in particular everyone thinks about the Army at Gallipoli, but it was the Navy that got the soldiers there.
“The Australian submarine AE2 was lost in the Dardanelles and rests there now,” Jon said. “Today, we are putting in this ANZAC memorial garden to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the start of World War I, and the Rosemary that is going in here was propagated from cuttings brought back to Australia from the famous Gallipoli site. “I would like to thank Bunnings in Booval who have helped us out with soil treatments, compost and some know-how.” The Milford Street complex has been used for many years to give Cadets training facilities and a central base in the Ipswich CBD. Seniors Week 2014
Seniors Week celebrations took place across Ipswich and the Somerset region last week and I was pleased to be a part of those celebrations, at Ipswich and at Lowood. Seniors Week is a terrific opportunity to celebrate the contribution seniors make within their communities, but it is important to fight for those who cannot. One of the issues locals are very concerned about is the decision by the Abbott Government to remove the Dementia and Severe Behaviours Supplement (DSBS). Since 1 August this year, aged care providers have no longer had access to the extra funding support provided by the DSBS, which recognises the additional challenges involved with caring for people with dementia. Labor has prepared a petition calling on the Abbott Government to reinstate this funding and I took the petition with me to the Seniors Week events I attended. The support this petition received by locals has been nothing short of overwhelming and is clear evidence that dementia is a major challenge facing this nation. Everyone knows someone with dementia and understands how difficult it can be, which is why so many local people are disgusted at the Abbott Government’s actions. Tony Abbott has broken his promise to maintain funding for Labor’s historic aged care reforms by cutting funding in a number of areas at a time when the industry is going through many changes. Each August, we celebrate Seniors Week and I encourage everyone, young and old, to take a stand on behalf of all those living with Dementia and sign the petition. Sign the petition online at: http://www.alp. org.au/dementia. Or sign the petition at my office at Brassall Shopping Centre. For copies and more information call 3201 5300. Crime Prevention Recently the Legal Affairs and Community Safety Committee conducted a series of hearings into the prevention of crime. Across Queensland we heard from individuals, service providers and organisations who raised key issues afflicting our communities. I want to thank all those from Ipswich who appeared before the committee and contributed to the discussion on how we can make our community safer. The viewpoints and concerns raised during the Inquiry are a reflection of the concerns shared by the broader community. During my routine business door knocking I met with local business owners whose concern of anti-social crime in the Ipswich CBD was also prominent during the committee Inquiry. Overall crime statistics are down and the clearance rate is up. However, there is no doubt that despite the decline in crime, more work needs to be done to ensure our community remains a safe place to live, work and raise a family. The only way we can achieve this is if we work together. Steps are being implemented to improve our community safety and there are many positive results. This can be seen through increased police numbers in the region, continued financial support to Ipswich City Council for CCTV Cameras and the Safe Night Out Strategy that all seek to reduce anti-social crime within our community. By coming together we will make real change with real results.

RSPCA launches new phone app for pet owners
STEEL
THE REGION’S LARGEST RANGE & BEST PRICES
Ipswich has been announced as the first city to roll out a new smart-phone app which will assist the RSPCA reunite owners with their lost pets, and it is hoped that other councils around the nation will also embrace the new technology. The new phone app is the same technology used by immigration departments and the FBI that can recognise and match human faces, which can now be used on dogs. Yes, facial recognition for dogs has arrived! “We congratulate Ipswich on leading the way,” said RSPCA Qld CEO Mark Townend. “This will prove to be another vital tool in helping to reunite people with their lost pets. “This is revolutionary and best of all it’s totally free,” Mr Townend said. “All you need is a smart phone, get the app then take a photo of your dog. Just add some details and upload it. When you take the photo there are a couple of things to do when you take it, like highlighting points over the eyes and nose, it’s all very simple. “If the dog goes missing and someone finds that dog, they can upload the photo and then the match is made. It works out 128 recognisable points using an algorithm of the dog’s face. This was developed in Utah in the United States and we are hoping that this goes Australia wide. “As as easy as taking a moment to take a photo of your dog and upload.” RSPCA Queensland currently reunites over 23,000 dogs a year, and it is hoped that by November there will be a facility for uploading cat photos too. Cr Andrew Antoniolli praised the innovative ‘Finding Rover’ app as a way for local residents to protect their four legged friends. “Residents can list dogs as missing, found or simply upload the image as an extra protection against the unexpected. Staff at our pound will be integrating the same app into
our lost dog processing and using it to reunite families with their pets faster.” “Obviously its success depends on the number of people who register their dogs,” added Mr Townend. ”But it’s been a huge success in the United States and is now being officially used by the San Diego Department of Animal Services. I still find it amazing! “After all we’re only just getting used to facial recognition technology being used on people. It’s like something out of CSI. The background software used in Finding Rover was actually developed here in Queensland and is now used in animal shelters all over the USA and Canada, so this is actually a pretty big deal for Queensland. We’re delighted that Ipswich have formally taken it on board.” Below: Cr Antoniolli with CEO of RSPCA Qld Mark Townend and a four legged friend.

Conserving cash on Bartercard Hein Van Rensburg from Ipswich Signarama and Pacific LED and Lighting has used Bartercard to innovatively supplement his business, diversify his income and reward his staff but without the costly price tag. He has been running Signarama Ipswich, a local company specialising in signage and branding, since 2008, and joined Bartercard in 2012 - initially to attract new customers and move excess stock. He’s since used Bartercard to purchase an investment property and a lighting business to complement his income stream and diversify his clientele while conserving cash every time he spends. “Bartercard has helped me move excess stock into sales and source extra customers, converting to referrals in the cash market,” Hein said. In return Hein said that he has been able to reward his staff with accommodation in Fiji and Thailand -paid for on Bartercard as one of the many lifestyle options available through the trade exchange.
“It’s certainly not something that many employers offer and staff absolutely love it,” he said. “Bartercard has been a real asset for my business, providing me with investment opportunities and an introduction to a network of clients I wouldn’t otherwise have access to.” Bartercard has been helpful in conserving cash on every day business expenses and incidental costs. “Essentially Bartercard takes cash out of the equation every time you spend on something you need. “On average Bartercard accounts for approximately 10% of my business, however there are so many ways you can use it including growing personal wealth through property investment. Dr Nicholas Stott at Glebe Road Chiropractic comes from a family of Chiropractors, and he truly believes that a healthy spine means a happier life. He says, “for good health look to your back first.”
the cornerstone of good health
Problems with you back and spine are parts of the human body that are constantly overlooked by most people, and most problems can so easily be fixed. How often have you woken up with a stiff neck, a migraine or sore legs? Do you say to yourself that you’re getting old or a ‘bit stiff’? When we have the flu, or an ailment, we all visit the doctor but when was the last time you considered having your back checked? Having bad posture or an unknown injury can cause long-term health problems. A simple check-up can put your mind at ease, or at the very least find problems with your back, which could result in you living without the pain that you wake up with. Dr Stott says that his Glebe Road practice, just minutes from the Ipswich CBD, is getting quite a following in Ipswich. He brings his years of experience to the Ipswich community, and to prove he supports Ipswich, he is making an offer you can’t refuse.
“I’ve got a special on at the moment, which is normally $197; I can give you a full consultation, full size x-ray (if needed), an examination and a full report, all for just $47,” Dr Stott said. “People can wake up every day, feel a bit sluggish, low on energy, have neck pain and just put it down to a ‘bad nights sleep’. “If you have a neck problem and ignore it, without treatment, it’s just going to get worse and worse. As a chiropractor I can help with that through exercises and treatment. “A lot of people have back degeneration with pain down the leg for example, however with early detection, like that for Scoliosis

(curvature of the spine) in children, we can prevent many problems from occurring in the future if found NOW and monitored. Prevention is always better than cure.” Scoliosis can be caused by bad posture or genetics. Many children carry heavy school bags, which can cause their necks to move forward a lot and in turn this causes instability. “The body wants to be straight, not curved,” Dr Stott said. “Its so simple to see problems with kids, and you can do something great for their lives by getting this fixed, because you are preventing pain or sickness for the next twenty years. “Another common problem is pulling a muscle in your back. It will heal, but if there is more damage than healing it can cause a big problem. If the muscles around the spine are damaged the body is
weakened and will compensate for those damaged muscles, therefore you need all your muscles working together correctly to move properly and effectively. “Before you move, the brain knows you are going to do it, so the brain switches on muscles. If those receptors in the muscles aren’t working right, it can cause damage. Did you know that one in eleven people in this country suffer back pain, but up to 90 per cent of pain can be helped.” One of the advantages at Glebe Road Chiropractic is that it is one of the few chriropractic centres that has a full size X-ray machine. Having a full image of the spine, makes Dr Stott’s job a lot easier in finding problems. To his knowledge, it is the only location in Ipswich to have this facility. “It’s a great advantage being able to see the whole spine, from the top of the neck to below the pelvis. It is a fantastic aid in seeing where the problem lies. “This gives me a window into your spine. I can see misalignments, curve changes, past fractures, degeneration, and even malformations. “I had a client recently who had an extra vertebrae that didn’t fuse properly as a child, and it was only thanks to the x-ray that I could see this and then figure out the right treatment. “We all brush our teeth twice a day then go to the dentist twice a year, so why not think the same way about your back? What have you go to lose from getting a check-up? If your back is not right, your whole body will be affected. “Plus if you’ve never seen a Chiropractor, you can claim straight away through
private health cover, including the cost of x-rays.” Dr Stott says that the $47 special is a great idea for anyone who is concerned about the state of their back, and it’s proving a big hit with locals. “I want to do things right for Ipswich. If you have a symptom, it’s your body telling you that something is not right. It might come and go, but something’s not right. Why not get it checked out? “Your spine is one of the most precious parts of your body, so you need to look after it.” To take advantage of this special offer, or for more information, you can call today on 3202 3348 or email admin@gleberoadchiropractic.com.au plus you can visit the website at www. gleberoadchiropractic.com.au

ESCAPE Singapore – a great holiday destination A holiday to Singapore surprises most, as it is a bustling cosmopolitan city populated with high rise buildings and gardens. On arrival the first thing a traveler will notice is the greenery. Trees and flowers adorn almost every corner of the island. Over 50 per cent of this island-city is comprised of greenery. Singapore’s population is just over five million people, with English the main language. It is rich in culture, religion and food with four different ethnic groups — Chinese, Malay, Indian and Eurasian. For the shoppers there are numerous shopping malls including the iconic Orchard Road. The best time to grab a bargain is during the annual Great Singapore Sale (usually June) and shopping malls are offering up to 70 per cent off original prices. Singapore also has something to whet your appetite with a range of dining options from Peranakan to Chinese, Indian to Malay, fusion and more. A trip to Singapore isn’t complete without Breakfast with the Orangutans, scenic view of the city from the Singapore Flyer, ride the movies at Universal Studios,
and walk 22 metres above ground level on the Skyway at the Gardens by the Bay (pictured below) and a drink at sunset from the Marina Bay Sands hotel bar. Singapore also boasts some of the largest cruise ships in the world and is one of the world’s busiest ports. It is an ideal launch pad for many tourists to commence their exploration of Asia. Interesting Singapore Fact: The Merlion, a half-fish, half-lion beast, is a fitting symbol of Singapore. The “Singa” or lion represents the animal that a Sumatran prince saw which resembled a lion, and the fish is a tribute to Singapore’s history as “Temasek”, the ancient sea town. Talking Beer WITH TIM AT THE PA HOTEL
Pepper Steak Porter: If I was to ask you what food you would want to eat next time you have a beer, what would it be? My answer would be a nice juicy eye fillet with some pepper sauce on the side. Well imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered that the guys at BrewCult had combined the two. Disbelief was my first reaction, “How can you combine steak and beer and not have a complete mess?”. Well I can tell you that they have done it, and done it well. BrewCult Pepper Steak Porter was created for the recent Great Australian Beer SpecTAPular and received raving reviews from all that attended so I thought I would see what it’s like for myself. Before I had even finished pouring the glass I was gifted with the unmistakable aroma of black peppercorn and my mouth was watering. I held back my urge to dive straight into the dark-ruby coloured goodness and let the beer take me on a journey. Once you get past the initial peppercorn aroma you are greeted with notes of roasted cherrywood with hints of green spice, if I closed my eyes I would be convinced I was sniffing dinner… not a beer. Upon tasting you are met with the meaty flavours from the roasted cherrywood malts backed up by bold dark roasted characteristic you find in most porters. After you swallow, your palate is cleansed with a refreshing bitterness before being reinvigorated with the spiciness of the black pepper, which takes me back to the last time I drank a chilli beer. This beer is a journey in a glass and an experience that everyone should have, and by everyone I mean everyone, even Vegans, as the beer is 100% Vegan. I would like to say more but all this writing has made me thirsty, so I’m gonna head down to the Prince Alfred Hotel’s Char’d Steakhouse where this limited release beer will be pouring until it runs out. Cheers!

World air forces unite for Pitch Black There’s a multinational air war going on across the Northern Territory and the Arafura Sea, as military air crews from Australia and allied nations fly simulated combat missions to test their skills under highly realistic battlespace conditions, defending sovereign territory and the country’s maritime approaches. For more than 20 years the RAAF has conducted Exercise Pitch Black, the year’s major air defence and air attack training activity, with air crews conducting Offensive Counter Air and Defensive Counter Air missions launched from air bases at Darwin and Tindal. Exercise participants utilised the Delamere Air Weapons Range and Bradshaw Field Training Area. The air combat elements were supported in the conduct of their missions by air transport assets, air-to-air refuelling aircraft and airborne early warning and control aircraft. Ground-based assets included joint aircraft maintenance, battlefield airspace control, intelligence gathering, airfield security and facilites maintenance. About 2300 defence force personnel deployed from their home bases to train as they would fight in a realworld conflict. Held during August, Pitch Black has grown to include 14 participating nations’ air forces from Australia, the United States, Singapore, New Zealand, Thailand, and for the first time the United Arab Emirates and the French Armed Forces in New Caledonia. As the exercise progressed, mission scenarios became larger and more complicated,

dollars is injected in to the local economy during the month of the exercise. Air Commander Australia Air Vice Marshal Mel Hupfeld said the exercise involved the cutting edge of military aviation technology with a mix of first-time and returning participants, making it the most advanced contingent in the event’s 24-year history. “Conducting Pitch Black 14 is a massive undertaking, not just for aircrews and maintainers but also the planning involved.” RAAF Amberley was represented by nine F/A18F Super Hornets from 1 Squadron operating from RAAF Base Darwin, C-17 Globemasters conducting airlift along with the KC-30A of 33 Squadron operating from Amberley providing air to air refuelling support. requiring mission commanders to respond tactically to increased threat scenarios and employ assets in various air combat roles, both defensively and offensively. Adding to the worth of Pitch Black series is that flight operations are conducted over some of the largest landmass areas in the world, and feature realistic, simulated and re-created threats and targets. These training advantages make Pitch Black a ‘must go’ exercise for allied nations. In the strategic sense, Pitch Black also serves to strengthen the ties between Australia and its neighbours, and allow visiting forces to experience the culture of the Northern Territory. It is estimated that several million

MONEY & PROPERTY
MATTERS
Offset accounts can save you thousands BY MARK BOURIS
For those who have worked and scraped to save a mortgage deposit, there is a strong instinct to find the best value loan, and repay it in the most efficient way possible. If this is you, I suggest you take a look at a product called the offset account loan. When they’re used properly they can save you thousands of dollars and accelerate the paying-down of the mortgage. An offset account is a transaction account directly linked to your mortgage account. The balance of funds held in the offset account serves to reduce the balance of your loan account for the purposes of calculating interest. These calculations are carried out on a daily basis, so each day you have a balance in your offset account, it is saving you interest. Here is an example. If your mortgage balance was $300,000, and you put a $5,000 tax refund into the offset account, interest would only be charged on $295,000 for the period the offset account is maintained at a $5,000 balance. The longer you can keep the balance high in your offset account, the lower you keep the interest bill and, therefore, more of your money is paying-down principal rather than interest. This is how you speed up the repayment of the loan.

It can work this way: all income goes into the offset account and fixed costs (mortgage, power, phone, internet, gas, car finance) are directdebited from the offset account automatically. For those without spending discipline, weekly spending money (including grocery budget) can be deposited into separate bank accounts, and an allocated amount goes into debt reduction or investments, including super. The trick is to never have an ATM or credit card attached to the offset account, especially if you are likely to take yourself on a spending spree. Have one for your weekly spending account, but not the offset. An off-set account is a do-it-yourself tool because you can set it up yourself, fine-tune it as you go and use it as both a budgeting and wealth-building system. It’s worth noting that loans with an offset account are often marginally more expensive than your typical basic loan, however, by adopting strategies for aggressively paying down home loan debt, you can potentially be better off in the long term. If you have the discipline and the focus to make this work — and many Australians do — you’ll find you can better control your money and you can make your income work harder for you. You’re also potentially ahead tax wise because the money you save on paying less interest is tax-free, whereas if you put the $5000 tax refund in a savings account you would potentially have to pay tax on the earnings. Offset account mortgages are not a magic bullet and they don’t suit everyone. But for focused, disciplined people who want to be smart about their mortgage and finances, this is something worth investigating. BEHIND THE
WHEEL Hyundai unveils New Generation i20 Hyundai has unveiled first images of the New Generation i20, ahead of its debut at the 2014 Paris Motor Show in October. The popularity of the original i20 has made it one of the company’s best-selling cars worldwide. The key aims of the new model are to open Hyundai to an even wider audience; further develop perceptions of the brand; and confirm Hyundai’s position as a truly European automaker. The New Generation i20 has been designed and developed in Europe, and three key attributes in particular underline how it meets the needs of consumers: class-leading interior space, a host of high-technology and comfort-enhancing features, and distinctive, refined design. Based on a new platform, the New Generation i20 features a 2570mm wheelbase – 45mm longer than its predecessor –one of the most spacious cabins in the segment. Efficient packaging has created a passenger compartment that can comfortably seat five adults. Front and rear legroom is best in class at 1892mm. Enhancing the comfort and the sense of space for driver and passengers is a uniquein-class panoramic sunroof. Able to both tilt
and fully open, it fills the cabin with natural light and fresh air. Further features add to the refinement and convenience of the New Generation i20, including integrated rearview camera and front LED lighting. Hyundai’s European design team has created a bold front aesthetic. The upright chrome-framed hexagonal grille has been lowered for design and engineering purposes. A thin, horizontal grille connects the front headlamp clusters, which include bi-function projection headlamps, LED daytime running lights and LED positioning lamps. A lower grille houses the front fog lamps, and emphasises the powerful stance of the car. At the rear, the New Generation i20 features a gloss-finished black C-pillar that gives the impression of a floating roofline. The lamp clusters wrap around the rear wing into the trunk lid and feature a ‘boomerang’-shaped LED design. The world premiere of the New Generation i20 will take place during Hyundai’s press conference at the 2014 Paris Motor Show. Volkswagen unveils new Polo compact The Polo from Volkswagen is one of the world’s best-selling compact models with nearly 14 million units produced. Around 721,000 drivers opted for the best-seller last year alone. Now Volkswagen Australia is introducing a new Polo that has been advanced both visually and technically. The assistance systems, as well as the new efficient engines of the Polo, have taken enormous strides forward. In its class, the Polo offers the widest range of assistance systems and is the first car in this segment that comes equipped with a Multi-Collision Braking System and, as part of an optional package, with Adaptive Cruise Control. In the case of both the infotainment system and engines, a completely new generation of technologies were integrated in the car. Thanks to new engines and the inclusion of BlueMotion Technology (start/stop and brake energy recuperation), Volkswagen realised fuel economy improvements of as much as 21 per cent (Polo 66TSI Trendline). The radio system was also redesigned; as a second generation system, it ref lects stateof-the-art technology in what is known as the modular infotainment system (MIB). The software and hardware of the system follows the infotainment technologies of the larger Golf, and offers functions such as Bluetooth audio streaming in both specifications. Visually, the new Polo can be identified by sharper front and rear designs. Fresh colours, new interior materials and many other equipment details perfect the Volkswagen car. The updated Polo is once again available in Trendline and Comfortline equipment versions. For information on all things VW contact local dealer Boettcher’s on 3282 2722.

Holden Trax gets a boost Holden has revealed exciting updates to its popular small SUV, Trax, including the introduction of a high-tech 1.4 litre turbocharged engine on the LTZ model. The new optional 1.4 litre iTi petrol engine comes with a six-speed automatic transmission and delivers 103kW of power and 200Nm of torque. With fuel economy of just 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres, this new addition makes it one of the most fuel efficient cars in the Australian compact SUV market. The spirited and fun to drive 1.4 litre iTi Trax LTZ boasts a flat torque curve where peak torque is achieved at a low engine speed of only 1850rpm, allowing drivers to experience a refined and responsive drive in both city and country environments. The 1.4 litre iTi engine, which can also be found on the sporty Barina RS and locallymade Cruze, has been specifically calibrated by Holden engineers for Australian roads and is enhanced with a locally tuned suspension, tailored precisely to meet the needs of Australian drivers. Jeremy Tassone, Holden’s Vehicle Development Manager, said the introduction of the new, sportier engine combined with the local suspension tune would deliver responsive performance. “The 1.4 litre turbocharged engine provides drivers with even greater levels of refinement
and performance, and when combined with the locally tuned chassis and steering, makes for a really fun and enjoyable drive,” said Mr Tassone. “Holden’s talented engineers have done a fantastic job to ensure that the new 1.4 litre Trax LTZ has been designed to suit Australian driver preferences. Their hard work has really paid off.” In addition to the new engine, the top of the range Trax LTZ boasts new 18 inch alloy wheels, rain sensing wipers, a driver’s armrest and a sunroof as standard. Combining these new features with the car’s award winning MyLink in-car-entertainment system and a raft of advanced chassis systems including Descent Control System, Hill Start Assist and Electronic Stability Control incorporating Anti-lock Braking (ABS), Brake Assist (BA), Electronic Brake force Distribution (EBD) and Traction Control (TC), Trax remains one of the most technologically advanced vehicles in its class.
