Ipswich is growing It’s proof that Ipswich is growing when Channel Nine sees fit to put in a news studio, similar to one they have on the Gold Coast. It just goes to show that when we say Ipswich is growing, we mean it. Read all about the new studio on page 1 of this issue of Ipswich Life. Also in this issue I caught up with Aussie comic royalty in the shape of Jean Kittson who has released a new book all about the joys of Menopause, and its an hilarious read. Plus Jean has given us three copies to give away to readers. We get a huge response from readers to our giveaways, and this issue is no different with books to be won along with tickets to see Postman Pat (and his little black cat). Also in this issue we have our usual sections including motoring, Defence News, local news, puzzles, Top 5 and so much more. We love hearing from our readers, so make sure you like us on Facebook as we often have EXCLUSIVE and INSTANT giveaways just for our likers. Ipswich Life is FREE thanks to our advertisers, so let them know you ‘saw it in Ipswich Life’. Till next time.... darren@strikepublications.com.au

BEHIND THE WHEEL

Come and hear Veronica share about her healing, in Ipswich and in Lowood Veronica Ferguson knows this from her own experience. “While seeking healing in 1996 my eyes were opened to the truth from the Bible of Isaiah 53:5, “By His stripes we are healed.” I realised my healing had already been bought and paid for by Jesus’ suffering at the cross, and that healing was a gift.” “Like any gift, I understood it would not be mine until I received it. I prayed a prayer to receive that healing, and after three days of walking in faith I was instantly and dramatically healed of ongoing migraines and chronic neck pain. None of these problems ever returned, but in 2000 the skin on my face began to burn and I began having trouble breathing. These symptoms increased to the point where I had great difficulty sleeping at night, with the intense burning in my face making the most basic daily tasks difficult.” Veronica describes it as being “as if someone had applied a burning hot iron to either side of your face”. It also looked unsightly — with the heat and pressure causing blood vessels to burst — and she often became the focus of strangers’ stares in the street. Although Veronica sought prayer for healing, her own faith had wavered and she was now unsure of what God’s intent was in the area of healing. Having once walked in faith - doubt, uncertainty and fear were now her closest companions. After three years of increasing affliction and two operations, Veronica found her physical, social and financial world in ruins. On the verge of losing her job with Christian broadcaster Trans World Radio, Veronica began seeking God for revelation. Veronica says “God responded to my prayer with dreams and visions, and almost daily I would wake to a word from the Bible telling me what path to take. These verses became the stepping stones for my faith walk, enabling me to put an end to a five-year affliction”. She was left with one legacy from that experience — a word from God that she could not ignore — “Tell My people I want them well.” Veronica’s own journey and the biblical revelation gained from it is now a 4 CD teaching series on healing. Veronica will be sharing her story including the steps that led to her healing at three Ipswich and surrounding churches on the weekend of the 23rd - 24th August. Her inspiring story of perseverance and faith will provide keys for those who are searching for healing.

Nine news bureau opens in Springfield SPRINGFIELD WHAT’S NEW IN

Brisbane’s Channel Nine News has expanded its reach into the high-growth corridor west of Brisbane with the opening of a dedicated news-gathering bureau in the Springfield.

The bureau will act as a ‘hot desk’ with the ability to be operated by four staff members and enable breaking news from the region to be televised live across Nine Network Queensland and regional affiliate WIN Television. Combined with the Gold Coast bureau, the new Springfield office will enhance the Nine Network’s ability to deliver unparalleled resources to television news gathering in Queensland. “This bureau has been 12 months in the planning and we’re excited to be finally expanding our news service into this important region,” said Mike Dalton, Director of Nine News Queensland. “When news breaks in the Ipswich or Toowoomba regions, whether it be flooding, bushfires or events of community importance, viewers will see it first with Nine News positioned to broadcast the most immediate and comprehensive information and images direct from Springfield.” Kylie Blucher, Nine Queensland Managing Director said that this had been a long time coming, with previous success on the Gold Coast leading the way. “The concept came out of the experience we had on the Gold Coast, setting up a bureau there. When we came out and met with the team here, looking at the growth, and with future growth…now seemed the time to make the investment.

“It’s hard not to get caught up in the expansion and excitement out here, and we wanted to be a part of it. “I think having local reporters in Ipswich gives a sense of connection. If we are here we can respond much faster. The outcome is that we have more local content, and its more relevant content that people want to watch.” The Nine News Springfield bureau will also actively educate and contribute to the next generation of journalists, with media students from the University of Southern Queensland’s Springfield campus having access to its resources. Ms Blucher added: “The Springfield bureau is a major part of Nine’s commitment to the people of Ipswich and our wider Queensland audience. We’re looking forward to being involved with Springfield community and a voice for the region to tell its stories. “The incorporation of USQ students into the bureau also allows us to work with the university on developing the journalists of tomorrow and give them practical experience in news gathering.” Springfield founder and city visionary Maha Sinnathamby congratulated Nine Queensland on recognising the importance of this growth corridor.

“The Springfield community is enormously excited to have Channel Nine not only on the ground here but also teaming up with the local university in a national first. To deliver this kind of hands-on experience and tuition to students is first class,” he said. “We will have one producer permanently here with a roving cameraman, plus we will have two USQ students on site each day,” Ms Blucher added. “It came about pretty early on having USQ’s involvement. We have a couple of our team members that do lectures, and it simply evolved from there.” The Nine News Springfield bureau is located at 145 Sinnathamby Blvd, Springfield Central, and is now fully operational. Top left: Maha Sinnathamby officially opens the bureau (below left) which is now full operational. Below: L-R: Kylie Blucher, Cr Victor Attwood, Jo-Ann Miller MP, Maha Sinnathamby and Bob Sharpless.

How Jean Kittson got Australia talking about Menopause— by Darren Hallesy

She’s Australian comedy ‘royalty’, and after years of performing Jean Kittson is finding a whole new audience, because Jean is going through Menopause… and proud of it. It’s the stage of life that is technically defined as: ‘the cessation of a woman’s reproductive ability… usually a natural change. It typically occurs in women in midlife, during their late 40s or early 50s, signalling the end of the fertile phase of a woman’s life.’ All sounds rather serious doesn’t it? Luckily, Jean’s new book ‘You’re Still Hot To Me’ is an informative and very funny account of her realisation about her ‘change of life’. Officially entering the realms of being a ‘Mature’ woman, Jean discovered that Menopause was a subject that has never been openly discussed in the media or by everyday people, and it was a simple visit to a pharmacy that gave her that ‘light bulb moment’. “I’d become menopausal and had started sweating a lot on stage. People thought I was ill or nervous…which simply wasn’t the case. I felt really uncomfortable on stage doing this so I sought some help,” Jean said. “I went to the local pharmacy and explained what was happening and the woman behind the counter looked furtively around the shop, then whispered to me ‘hot flushes?’ “I thought why are you whispering? Is this some big secret? Why are we embarrassed by this? This is a chemist, you can openly talk about “Genital Warts’ and walk over to the shelf to find a cure! “My first job which I was younger was in a

chemist shop, and in those days when women wanted sanitary napkins they were kept behind the counter and handled in a brown paper bag. Things are different now, yet I just couldn’t work out why menopause was such a big secret.” Jean began to talk about the subject when on stage, and it came to the attention of people around the country. “I started talking about Menopause, and the National Press Club asked me to do a talk about it. I said are you sure? Anyway, I went and spoke about it, and got a really positive, enthusiastic response. “The interesting thing was the response from men, they really wanted to know what was going on with the women in their lives. The next address I got asked to do was in front of 600 men! “The book’s publishers, Pan Macmillan saw this address and rang me. They said there was nothing like this on bookshelves. Fast forward three years later and this is the result. I did months of research, and it was difficult, but the great thing was to find the facts.” During her research Jean found out how this stage of life was treated over recent history. “It wasn’t the lack of information, I simply wanted to know why it was such a secret. My mother said it was the worst five years of her life and she talked about everything… but not

this. I discovered that in the early 1900’s if a woman reached menopause, quite often they were diagnosed with insanity and locked up. It wasn’t uncommon. “If that was happening I wouldn’t tell anyone either! Luckily I found that you don’t go insane. It’s simply a natural part of the cycle of life, just like puberty. “There is a fear of talking about it, because it means people have to admit they are growing old, and growing up. It’s a great age. If we look after our health we can embrace it. We all know how old we are. “This is about being comfortable with that, and having self esteem. Statistics are that if you are in your 50’s and stay at work, employers love women of that age, but if you leave your job and try somewhere else at that age you run into trouble. Hopefully we can get over this stupid age obsession, stop trying to look younger than we are and just celebrate the age we’re at. This is supposed to be how you look at any age, embrace it. Accept it.” While the book is covering a serious subject, it is done with Jean’s trademark humour and brutal honesty. It has hit a chord with people across the nation, flying up the book charts. “I try with my humour to be funny but not trivialise anything, so I was trying to balance the book. I’d never be flippant about any subject, but I wanted people to find the humour in it. I wanted this to include the facts but not to have wade through it. I recommend that men too read this book and understand what could or might happen with the women in their lives. “I think as Australians we like to laugh,

especially at ourselves. We don’t want a ‘boohoo’ book, where it’s all men’s fault. We want a book that makes you feel good, and so it should, to have you looking forward to that stage of your life...not dread it. “I gave this book to a well known doctor. She read it and texted me early in the morning saying that she loved it for being funny, informative, factual and accessible. She said she finally has a book on menopause she can recommend to her patients, and I was dancing around the house! Every woman I spoke to said they wished they could talk about it in the workplace and all they got was rolling of the eyes. Let’s call it for what it is. Don’t be a jerk about it. Maybe we can just ask to leave all the windows open in the office when a hot flush comes along?” ‘You’re Still Hot To Me’ is out now through Pan Macmillan

The School’s Middle School program caters to the needs of girls in Years 7 to 9 with specialist Middle School teachers and individualised one-to-one learning, to ensure that each

student is given the attention she needs to achieve her best academically, along with pastoral care programs to support the psychological wellbeing of students.

These programs are supported by excellent facilities including the School’s Visual and Performing Arts Centre, a large lecture theatre, graphics and art studios, a business education centre, hospitality training rooms, heated swimming pool, gymnasium, Fitness Centre and Human Movements Laboratory. There’s also an on-site Centre for Young Women’s Health and Wellbeing, which offers yoga and meditation classes and focuses specifically on the physical and mental health and care of young women at IGGS. According to IGGS Principal, Dr Peter Britton, IGGS’s Middle School teachers foster selfdiscipline, a sense of community and resilience for the Senior years in each of the students.

“Our supportive learning programs favour not only the exceptional students at either end of the academic scale, but indeed all students, whatever their goals and challenges might be,” Dr Britton said. “We are known for nurturing positive attitudes to the hard work and discipline required to achieve and sustain excellence – in the classroom, at sport, on the stage, for all endeavours,” he said. The success of this approach is best evidenced by the School’s academic results with IGGS and Ipswich Junior Grammar School (IJGS) consistently achieving amongst the top NAPLAN results in the region, and well above state averages across Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. IJGS provides the opportunity for students to seamlessly transition into the Middle School with Junior Grammar students becoming familiar with the School campus and utilising the School’s facilities from an early age.

Junior Grammar currently offers coeducation from Kindy to Year 4 as well as an on-site Early Education Centre (EEC), which offers a long day-care program and caters for Kindy and Pre-Prep students. In the Senior School, one in every four OPeligible students achieved an OP1-5 in 2013, with more than 50 per cent achieving an OP18 and 90 per cent of IGGS students achieving an OP1-15. This academic success is balanced by more than 50 sporting, cultural and community service co-curricular options to engage a variety of interests and meet the diverse needs of the School’s student community. To support these interests throughout the community, scholarships are offered to talented students in Drama, Sport, Music, Visual Arts and academia. The School also offers a range of on-site boarding options for full-time boarding students and day students including day, casual, temporary and weekly boarding options to suit the needs of busy working families. IGGS and IJGS offer a private bus service servicing Brisbane and Ipswich suburbs for students, with late buses available in the afternoon to allow students to attend cocurricular activities or complete additional study and homework, before making their journey home.

Open Day at IGGS and IJGS - 22 August Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School (IGGS) and Ipswich Junior Grammar School (IJGS) will open their doors from 9.00am until 11.00am for an Open Day on a regular school day on Friday 22 August 2014. Education the key to safety

WHAT’S GOING ON

CITY VIBE The Listening Post With Ian Berry MP MEMBER FOR IPSWICH

Education is the foundation upon which we can build a strong future, which is why I am looking forward to the 2014 Education Accord Summit that will be held on the 25th of September. The Education Accord is a grass roots initiative that will stimulate discussion from every sector within the education community and help shape the future direction of Education Queensland. I eagerly anticipate the opportunity over the coming weeks to continue to build on my strong relationship with our local schools. In the lead up to the summit, I will be hosting local forums to enable the broader community to become involved and provide their contributions in the lead up to the Accord as we shape our vision for the future of our schools. We cannot effect the change we want if we don’t get involved. This is the chance to get off the bench and into the game and be part of something that will give our children and their children the ability to reach their full potential. I encourage all teachers, principals, parents and students to join in and take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. Only by working together can we shape a brighter future for all Queenslanders. STEEL

Every now and then, we all have a ‘light bulb’ moment. A time in your life when you see something and it sets off an idea that can lead to great things.

For Luise Manning of Springfield it happened in a car park, and it has led to a campaign that is getting government and community support across the nation. An early childhood teacher, Luise took her daughter Abbeney to dance class one day and after pulling up outside, Abbeney in a flash was gone from beside the car. It got Luise thinking about how to teach children the dangers of Low Speed Vehicle Runovers (LSVR) that are unfortunately on the rise every year. There have been several high profile accidents, even deaths in recent years, and Luise hopes that she can contribute to reducing the number of incidents. “We got out of dancing class and my daughter said ‘I don’t want to hold your hand’, and next moment she started running. That was my ‘light bulb moment’ when I realised that I’d done all the talking to here about it and it hadn’t sunk in,” Luise said. “But I knew that my daughter loves to read books, and it made sense to put the message in a book and that way she might understand. So I did and we haven’t had an issue since. “I’m an early childhood teacher and when I speak to children in year one, they love picture books as its something they can relate to. In all the surveys I’ve seen, people say that they drive a lot quicker when they are leaving a place and don’t always look properly behind them. The vast majority of accidents happen in car parks and under 5km an hour. “There are so many 4WD’s on the road now and as they are so high up its just so easy to not see a small child. If you think about it there are other factors. House blocks are smaller, door handles are installed lower due to disability access and kids aren’t silly, they know how to get outside. You can’t just be blaming the driver all the time. You have to look at the whole picture, nor say all cars should have reversing cameras. There are so many factors, its not fair just to blame 4WD owners. At the end of the day, children are unpredictable and holding their hand around cars is such a small

thing. Their peripheral vision isn’t developed as a child. They just don’t see cars moving around them.” Originally Luise went to Big W and made up her own photo book for her daughter, and then realised there was nothing like it around. “I went to libraries and found nothing. If I could have bought a book like this I would have. I found lots of books about road safety, but a lot of them were over twenty years old. “One day I was at a kindy for work, and I showed some children the book and these four year olds thought the headlights were the cars ‘eyes’. It got me thinking that if a four year old thinks the car can see them, what does a two year old think? “I found through my research was that one child a week is seriously injured through Low Speed Vehicle Runovers (LSVR’s), but how many aren’t reported each week that have been minor injuries or close calls?” Luise was nominated by her local MP for a road safety award and is off to Rockhampton later this year. In the meantime her book is for sale in Ipswich and she hope it will get into libraries and schools across the nation. “If you have more than one child its easy for one to wander around the car while you are attending to another so this book will teach children about being safe. “I tell parents to get the least mobile out first and put them in a pram or carrier, then attend to the others, it’s all about minimising the risk. I’d like to see this book go into all libraries plus child care centres and schools. “I’m trying to get people to realise that these accidents don’t just happen in driveways, they can happen around schools, car parks or anywhere.”

WHAT’S NEW IN

BOOKS

Discovering the Past It can be a daunting task, uncovering your family history. For Paul Livingston, better known to Aussie audiences as his alter ego comic creation ‘Flacco’, it was something that led to a book which told the true story of a man thrown into war at a time when his family needed him most. Absent Without Leave follows three wide-eyed young Australian men from their enlistment at the Sydney Showground in 1940 to the war in the Middle East and jungle warfare in the AsiaPacific. Private Stanley Livingston and his two best mates, Roy Lonsdale and Gordon Oxman, would be brothers-in-law as well as brothers in arms by the end of the war, as Stanley would marry Roy’s sister Evelyn, while Gordon would marry Lilly Livingston, Stanley’s younger sister. In this case the term ‘absent without leave’ has no negative connotation. Between their Middle East and Pacific campaigns Privates Livingston and Oxman, plus many of their

fellow soldiers, abandoned their units to be with their loved ones. These men were not running from battle or responsibility, but to the service of their families who desperately needed them. Livingston spent months sifting through family history and public records, after getting the idea of researching the life of his father. “It certainly came out of the blue and being a comedian I’m used to making stuff up,” Paul said. “My brother is an obsessive family historian to the point of being really annoying, and he was always sending me stuff that I didn’t really care about. “But one day he sent me some paperwork from a court martial involving my father. Here I was reading my father’s words from seventy years ago, and he died twenty five years ago. “I was intrigued, and didn’t realise what I’d got myself into. There was an enormous amount of research. It was a journey I’d never done before and I felt a responsibility which frightened me as being a comedian I’d lived a pretty irresponsible life. Usually it was my brother who’d done the right things.” As the research began, Paul felt an obligation to his father who had passed away over two decades ago. “There was a responsibility to my father, to who he was, and the extended family, and I was terrified. Once I got into the research it was a whole new ball game for me. Being such an amateur I walked into a library, and I thought ‘I can’t do this’, so I talked to a librarian thinking I would hire some researchers. She convinced me that if I did it myself I’d find the most amazing things, and it was the best advice I got. I meandered through it. I had a man’s life to go through and followed it along. “I was amazed at the detail of records, even the stuff online. You can literally go day to day and follow a man’s journey. It really struck me that these men were so young, as my dad was only 22 when he went in the forces and 27 when he came out. The reason for most of the men in those days was a sense of duty and to Empire that we don’t have any more. “Everybody did it out of duty to country, there was no such thing as a ‘Conscientious Objector’ back then, yet when I was growing

up in the 1960’s it was cool to be anti-war. People had relatives that had fought in WWI so there was a history there and I missed out on going to Vietnam by a just couple of years, but my father not being political in any sense, he was adamant that my brother and I didn’t go. He didn’t want us to go through what he did, so there was a change in the attitude to war over time. “From what I read most fathers did want their sons to go to war” Paul said. “While not being political in any sense, he insisted that he didn’t want us to go to war. He didn’t want us to go through what he did. If discovered that there was no support for any soldiers when they got home, nothing at all set up for those men, and it was the same in World War II. “At the time there seemed to be a suspicion of psychology, having mental issues was not seen as a medical issue, but a sign of cowardice. Today it is so different, and we see it with vets from Iraq or Afghanistan who are getting treatment… we are openly seeing what war does to people.” By the end of the research and the writing of the book, Paul is satisfied with the result and we asked what he thought his dad would think if he were here to see the finished product. “It was quite a detective story on my part to find out what he went through and at the end of the day I know I got close to him as a soldier but not emotionally, I don’t think any of us can understand what it was really like. “If my dad was here today he’d be totally embarrassed, but also moved that his boy would even go to a library on his behalf and take to his world. I’m sure he’d be flattered by it, but there is no way I could do it while he was alive, he wasn’t one to blow his own trumpet. “This book was a hell of journey to find all the information, and I can’t wait to get back to comedy and start making stuff up again!” Paul is currently performing around the country as part of the Doug Anthony Allstars, and ‘Absent Without Leave’ is out now through Allen & Unwin

Food as medicine What comes to mind when you think of all your favourite foods? Easily, I am a sweets lover and could indulge on cake, chocolate, gelato, pancakes . But I’m also very aware that the food we eat does affect us mentally, emotionaly, and physically. Recently I attended a Breast Cancer fundraisinging High Tea (yes, with plenty of all those lovely cakes) that included guest speakers from brave women in remission sharing their stories. It was one experience shared however that was utterly refreshing by Brisbane based chef, Alison Taafe. Alison’s sister Laura was originally diagonosed with breast cancer and after traditional treatment was re-diagnosed with terminal cancer. Laura was told to go and enjoy the remainder of her life but for Alison, there had to be something more they could do, perhaps with diet. After much research, holistic treatment AND a change of diet cutting out alot of the foods we tend to love, Laura lives “free” from cancer and full of life. Alison has since released her cookbook, “Eat for your Life” which looks at recipes tailored for anyone living with Cancer, MS, Heart Disease, Diabetes, High Blood Cholesterol and more. There is a selection of delish recipes inside from Farmhouse Breakfast, Raw Apple Flan, Cheeky Chocolate and Orange Mousse, Thai Red Chicken Curry, Asian Spiced Pineapple and more. I have available a copy for one lucky Ipswich Life reader. In the meantime, instead of turning to my favourite chocolate cake recipe, I’m going to try Alison’s “Beautiful Raw Brownies”. And as Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine famously said, “Let food be they medicine, and medicine thy food.”

GIVEAWAY I’ve got a copy of Alison’s new book to giveaway. To win, just email your name, address, & daytime phone number to win@strikepublications.com.au with the code word ‘FOOD’ in the subject line. Or post to Food Contest, PO Box 124, Ipswich, Qld 4305. Entries close Aug 12th.

WHAT’S GOING ON

CITY VIBE

Farewell to dumped trolleys? As reported in Ipswich Life early last year, in what is thought to be an Australianfirst, Ipswich City Council has introduced new local laws requiring supermarkets and other retailers to fit automatic wheel locks on shopping trolleys across the city. A buried electronic wire at all shopping centre exits will lock the front wheels preventing trolleys being removed from the premises. Ipswich City Council Policy Board chair Councillor Paul Tully said years of complaints and the days of unsightly trolleys clogging creeks, rivers and littering parks and streets in Ipswich will be consigned to history. Cr Tully said retailers had been given a full year to install the new trolley containment system or face heavy fines. “The only effective method is a wheel lock activated by an electronic signal from a buried wire at the perimeter of the premises or car park. “It is not a big cost to solve a big problem with each new wheel lock costing approximately $45. I am encouraging every council in Queensland and around Australia to follow Ipswich’s lead.” Cr Tully said the wheel locking mechanism was triggered by concealed electronic wire detectors at all street exits.

“It automatically locks one of the trolley’s wheels if someone tries to take it outside the shopping centre precinct and can be unlocked only by the retailer. “All shopping centres and supermarkets across Ipswich with more than 20 trolleys must have this trolley containment system,” Cr Tully said. “Those retailers with up to 20 shopping trolleys will be required to implement the same system if they receive two infringement notices if their trolleys are found abandoned on the city’s streets or parks within 12 months.” Cr Tully said retailers failing to comply with the new system faced fines of up to $5500. He said there had been reports of people using shopping trolleys for washing baskets, BBQ grills and mobile storage units. “Previous attempts to deal with these wayward trolleys have proven to be largely unsuccessful. Coin operated trolley systems have not been effective with trolleys still often found kilometres from shopping centres. “Some retailers also back flipped and dumped coin systems following pressure from customers. The automatic wheel lock system will ensure shopping trolleys stay where they belong — at the supermarket. With wheel lock systems in place we can now rid Ipswich of this great Australian blight.” Above: Hopefully now a sight of the past, a trolley left on the street which becomes ‘somebody else’s problem’. Below: Cr Tully with the wheel lock system.

Ipswich clubs to host ‘Month of Golf’ events August in Ipswich will be a great time for all golfers, with local golf clubs opening their courses for competitions, culminating in the 2014 Isuzu Queensland Open to be held at the Brookwater Golf & Country Club 28th – 31st August. Ipswich Golf Club, Sandy Gallop Golf Club and Karana Downs Golf Club will host events in the lead up to the Queensland Open. The major prize for the winner at each event is a much sought after place in

the Queensland Open Pro Am. Each of the three clubs will be host a Sunday Open Medley Single Stableford Competition, giving players of all levels the opportunity to win this fantastic prize. Courses and dates are: Ipswich Golf Course – Sunday 27th July. Sandy Gallop Golf Club – Sunday 3rd August. Karana Downs Golf Club – Sunday 24th August.

Isuzu Queensland Golf Open attracts best golfers to Brookwater Golf Club What was it about the Isuzu Queensland Golf Open last year that attracted so many spectators? Organisers say the crowd of thousands was packed with as many nongolfers as golfers and there were entire families that chose to visit Brookwater Golf and Country Club every day over the four day championship. Brookwater, which hosted the premier event for the first time, is again this year’s venue. For nine years it’s been Queensland’s official number one public access course, and according to the judges an annual stand-out from anything else in the state. Course Superintendent Ben Geeson whose job it is to keep Brookwater on top of the ladder, believes when Greg Norman designed it he built in something enchanting. “Anyone visiting here is immediately struck by the beauty on offer,” he said. “The fairways are crafted to be totally in sync with the magnificent native

DEFENCE D-Day: Minute by Minute

by Jonathon Mayo June 6th 1944 was an historic day in the true sense of the word, but it was also a day where ordinary people were placed often in extraordinary situations... Lieutenant Norman Poole jumping from a bomber surrounded by 200 decoy dummy parachutists; French baker Pierre Cardron leading British paratroopers to his local church where he knows two German soldiers are hiding in the confessional; Southampton telegram boy Tom Hiett delivering his first ‘death message’ by midday; at the sound of Allied aircraft Werner Kortenhaus of the 21st Panzer Division running to collect his still damp washing from the French woman who’s been doing his laundry; injured soldiers weeping in their beds in hospital in New York, knowing that their buddies are dying on the Normandy beaches. Drawing on memoirs, diaries, letters home and oral history accounts, D-Day: Minute by Minute is pure chronological story, concerned less with the military strategies and more with what people were thinking and doing as D-Day unfolded. Zero Six Bravo by Damien Lewis In March 2003 M Squadron was sent 1,000 kilometres behind enemy lines on a true mission impossible, to take the surrender of the 100,000-strong Iraqi Army 5th Corps. From the very start their tasking earned the nickname ‘Operation No Return’. Caught in a ferocious ambush by thousands of die-hard fanatics from Saddam Hussein’s Fedayeen, plus the awesome firepower of the 5th Corps’ heavy armour, and with eight of their vehicles bogged in Iraqi swamps, M Squadron launched a desperate bid to escape, inflicting massive damage on their enemies. Running low on fuel and ammunition,

outnumbered, out manoeuvred and outgunned, the elite operators destroyed sensitive kit and prepared for death or capture as the Iraqis closed their deadly trap. Zero Six Bravo recounts in vivid and compelling detail the most desperate battle fought by British and allied Special Forces trapped behind enemy lines since World War II. (Pan MacMillan)

Eleven Eleven by Paul Dowswell

Set during the final 24 hours before the armistice at 11 a.m. on 11th November 1918, the story follows a German storm trooper, an American airman and a British Tommy. Their destinies converge during the death throes of the first ever conflict to spread across the globe. War becomes incredibly personal as nationality and geography cease to matter to each of these teenagers on the Western Front, and friendship becomes the defining aspect of their encounter. But who will live and who will die before the end of the day? “(Eleven Eleven) will sit well alongside the poetry and factual accounts of life in the trenches and in the air. It is a deep and sad story . . . made so poignant because it all takes place on the last morning, leading up to Eleven Eleven” – The Independent (Bloomsbury)

DIGITALTECHTALK ...making sense of digital technology Boost your online presence The Internet has become such a powerful tool for business owners in engaging, targeting and understanding their customers. With cut-throat competition all in one central place it can be difficult to get noticed in an ever-growing crowd. It doesn’t take a marketing or IT background to know how to make your website stand out. There are simple solutions that can greatly assist you in boosting your online presence, and here are three of them.

Get Social Join online communities and social networks to leverage some traffic. Your customers are likely to be active social media users, use this knowledge to your advantage. There are heaps of social media sites that can give you access to potential customers for free. Start out with the big ones; Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Google Plus, LinkedIn. Join relevant discussion groups within these platforms and start connecting with your customers. Share you news, promotions and advice to attract more engagement and links back to your website. Social media is one of the easiest ways to kickstart your online presence.

Send out a Newsletter Once you’ve captured the attention of potential customers it can be difficult to maintain and build that relationship. A simple solution to this is through a regular newsletter. Use your newsletter to share topics of interest, promotions, company news and industry trends. This keeps the connection alive, and consumers engaged. The Internet has reformed the way traditional marketing works. The principles as such, have not changed. The basics are that we are connecting with our customers, sharing our advice and keeping in touch. These foundations aren’t hard to build but can be extremely profitable to any business if done right. Jamin Andrews Principal Conetix

HISTORY

For more than 70 years this two story brick building at 80 Brisbane Street was the location of a Greek Café. Founded as an Oyster Saloon in 1901 by John Black, it was originally known as the Australia Café. In 1915 management was taken over by Marsellos and Spathis and soon after it was renamed the City Café. From 1933 it was owned in succession by Jim Strategos, Nick Stathis, and Jack Cassimatis. During the war years, when food supplies and staff were hard to come by, owner Nick Stathis turned the upstairs function room into a billiards saloon. The café closed in the 1970s after the death of Jack Cassimatis.

It’s rumoured to be an album of instrumental music based on their 1993 Division Bell album. The new album, ‘The Endless River’ is expected to be released in October.

Prior to being a Café, the building had a retail focus. In the 1880s it was owned by Mr James McGill, who also owned the neighbouring Palais Royal Hotel. Part of the premises were occupied by Joseph Rose’s Universal Emporium, a retail establishment that prided itself on stocking an extensive range of items including everything from toys to decorative canary cages. In 1891 Robert Nosworthy’s Drapery business opened beside the Universal Emporium. Nosworthy was hit hard by the 1893 floods, losing much ground level stock to water damage. After the floods Rose relocated his business while Nosworthy stayed on.

Endless view at 39,000 feet in a KC-30A At an altitude of 39,000 feet, the view from a KC-30A pilot’s ‘office’ is a seemingly endless stretch of the Pacific Ocean. From Rockhampton, Flying Officer Barnes is now sitting in the cockpit of the biggest aircraft in the Air Force fleet. In July Flying Officer Barnes was piloting the aircraft home to Australia following a recent task to Guam and Japan. “Just in the last nine months or so this jet has taken me all over the world,” he said. “I’ve flown to the Philippines, Hawaii, Guam, Spain, the mainland United States a few times, and we’re coming back from Japan now. Plus, we go all over Australia, flying domestically up and down the East Coast is a weekly occurrence for us.” Indeed, the KC-30A is a frequent visitor to Rockhampton Airport, especially when transporting Defence personnel to the nearby Shoalwater Bay Field Training Area. The former Heights College student has been serving with No 33 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley for the past 18 months. He joined Air Force in 2008, studying at the Australian Defence Force Academy before

beginning his pilot training. He trained on the CT-4 and PC-9 training aircraft before taking a mammoth step up to the KC-30A. “The KC-30A is 233 tonnes at maximum takeoff weight, which is nearly one hundred times heavier than the PC-9,” Flying Officer Barnes said. “Besides that, the KC-30 is the first twinengine aircraft I’ve flown. “We complete a four-month KC-30 conversion course in the simulator before flying five missions in the real thing and receiving our qualification.” On graduating from the training course, Flying Officer Barnes is a co-pilot on the KC30A, developing his skills and experience on the aircraft. “For an international mission like this, weeks of planning and forethought have to go into it,” he said. “We just need to make sure everything is

squared away with flight planning, air routes, fuel figures, we have the diplomatic clearances to fly through other nation’s airspace, and that we’re carrying all the right publications such as airfield approach charts and maps.” For much of June and July the squadron was working from RAAF Base Darwin while the runway at Amberley underwent a works program. The squadron capitalised on its time in Darwin, using it as a springboard around Australia and across the globe. Previously, Flying Officer Barnes has flown from Darwin to Oklahoma – a staggering 14,500 kilometre distance, ranked as one of the RAAF’s longest non-stop, unrefuelled journeys. “The United States is one of Australia’s major allies, and they have a lot of facilities across the Pacific that make operating the KC-30A a lot easier for us,” Flying Officer Barnes said. “For example, they’ve got the bases in Guam, in Japan, and in Hawaii, that we can use to stage our own operations and exercises. The advantage of the KC-30A is that it’s a longrange aircraft – we can fly up to 16, 17, 18 hour missions, taking people and cargo all over the world.” The KC-30A fulfils an important role within Air Force. The aircraft is a converted Airbus A330 airliner, with a capacity of up to 270 passengers. But it also performs the role of a ‘flying fuel station’, being able to transfer fuel mid-flight to a receiver aircraft. This is accomplished either by a ‘hose-anddrogue’ mounted in pods beneath each wing; or from a 19-metre long boom that is mounted under the tail. Air Force has extensive experience with hoseand-drogue refuelling, using the method to

extend the range of Hornet and Super Hornet fighter jets. The boom is a first-of-its-kind for Air Force, and will start seeing use from 2015. Earlier in 2014, Flying Officer Barnes witnessed firsthand the United States Air Force utilising a similar boom on its refuelling jets during exercises. Cooperation with the United States remains important to No. 33 Squadron, according to Flying Officer Barnes. “By working closely with the US, we can learn a lot from them and their tanker crews. They’ve been air-to-air refuelling on a much larger scale, for a lot longer than us,” Flying Officer Barnes said. “They’ve developed the Tactics, Techniques and Procedures that are really useful for us, so that we don’t have to keep reinventing the wheel for ourselves.”

Borrowing tips for the self-employed

MONEY & PROPERTY

MATTERS

BEHIND THE

WHEEL

BY MARK BOURIS

With interest rates low and house prices taking off in Sydney and Melbourne, commentators have claimed that lending criteria has slackened and borrowers are taking home loans they can’t afford. I don’t agree with this. Lending criteria is as solid as it has been since the Global Financial Crisis and most borrowers are borrowing no more than 80 per cent of the property price. Mortgage defaults dropped throughout 2013 according to the Fitch rating agency, to just 1.25 per cent of mortgages more than 30 days in arrears. Bemused by all of this are the self-employed and contractors, many of whom find it as hard as ever to get a home loan. For these people, the claims about easy mortgages are just fantasyland. Here’s a few tips: Full doc: Self-employed people don’t always need a ‘low documentation’ loan, with the higher interest rates those mortgages carry. ‘Low doc’ simply means alternative forms of income confirmation (bank statements, financial statements, accountants’ declarations) as opposed to PAYG slips and tax returns. If you have tax returns you should be pursuing a full documentation loan at standard rates. Have income: showing income to afford the loan is just the start; when you subtract monthly expenses you must have cash left over to service the loan. This is called serviceability. Work on serviceability: build a history (at least six months) of low expenses and high income.

Lenders and brokers are obliged to confirm both, so it is important to establish a solid track record. Reduce debt: eliminate or reduce your consumer debt. Lenders count the limit on your credit cards as money owed, not the balance. Show savings: a savings history means you’re serious about the loan and you live within your means. Be concise: provide the documents the lender or broker asks for. They may include BAS statements, tax returns, bank accounts and perhaps a declaration from your accountant. Do your taxes: keep your taxes up to date so you can always show your most recent income history. And make sure the tax assessments are paid. Self-employed applicants usually have their tax portals checked for taxes outstanding. Understand your structure: Understand how your business structure affects your personal income and what happens to your borrowing power if your taxable income is too low. Have a strategy: consult with a mortgage broker or a loans manager and formulate a plan for buying your property. This allows you to build your serviceability based on expert advice. Build a good record: once you have a mortgage it can be used to consolidate debt or refinance to a better loan. However, you must have a good record with that loan. Its high-quality textile top features improved acoustic properties as well as an electrically heatable glass rear window. It can be opened and closed in 15 seconds at speeds of up to 30 km/h. Ingenium engines — all designed, engineered and manufactured in the UK. Built around an all-new, aluminium-intensive architecture, the XE combines thrilling performance, agile handling and precise, responsive steering, with outstanding levels of refinement. Mike Cross, Chief Engineer of Vehicle Integrity, said: “Jaguar’s have always been renowned for a balance of precise handling and a high-quality ride. The XE is the culmination of everything the company has learned over the years. The Integral Link rear suspension provides a combination of supple ride and crisp handling that is unmatched in this segment. We are on target to deliver a vehicle that dynamically outperforms our rivals.” The advanced design is based on Jaguar’s flagship F-TYPE sportscar and includes some key components designed to deliver Jaguar XFRlevels of stiffness. These ensure the XE enjoys a similar level of agility and ‘connected’ steering feel. Like the rear suspension, many components are made from cast and forged aluminium and some are produced using a patented process.
