Mark Seymour: A Life in Music

IPSWICH’S OWN MAGAZINE

Managing Editor John Armstrong Finance Leann O’Donoghue News Editor Darren Hallesy Advertising Chris Nelson

He was the lead singer of a band that is etched in the minds of an entire generation. If you grew up during a golden era of Aussie music, namely the 80’s, you’d know only too well the impact of bands from that time like Cold Chisel, The Divinyls, Midnight Oil, Crowded House and many more, including Hunters & Collectors. Since the band split in 1998, Seymour has stayed in the limelight, with eight solo albums released. His new album, ‘Seventh Heaven Club’, is the second under the listing of ‘Mark Seymour & The Undertow’. The band is currently touring the nation and will end it with a gig in Ipswich on August 10. Ipswich Life began by asking Mark after decades of touring if he has a secret to begin on tour that he can share with all travellers. “Well, we do tour pretty constantly, and we do it well,” Mark said. “The trick is to allow plenty of time to travel. There’s really no great secret to travelling, its all about routine. I have a travel pack, which I take everywhere, is always ready and never emptied… apart from the undies of course.” Mark first got into music in the late 1970’s. While studying to become a teacher in Melbourne, it was an era when music changed forever, as the Sex Pistols represented a time of change.

“That time was such an era of social upheavel, I loved music but what shifted for me was when I saw young artists my age getting up and playing exciting music, I thought I can do that, and I was only 19. I mooched around for years, being torn between studying and getting a career or leaping into rock and roll. “I slipped into it really, my first few attempts were pretty sh*thouse. I hooked up with some guys at uni and it ended up becoming Hunters & Collectors. “Then I started listening to more English music which was heavier, it was an era that didn’t last too long with the likes of XTC, and even thought they quickly vanished, that led to us thinking we wanted to do something a bit darker and could be international.” While Mark says there was no ‘lightbulb’ moment for him, there was one memory that comes to mind where he decided music was a career choice. “There wasn’t a pivotal moment, but I

remember the first cover band I was in with members who eventually joined Hunters. It was very democratic, and everyone had a chance to sing, and when it was my turn I chose ‘Twist & Shout’, and it was that night I discovered my rock voice. In the back of my mind I thought ‘I really wanna do this’, I didn’t give a sh*t if I made any money out of it. It felt powerful, it felt right and to be honest I’ve never shifted from that view.” In 2008, Mark wrote his autobiography titled ‘Thirteen Tonne Theory’. It begs the question how do you remember things when you go to write your life story? “It was very much about defining moments and when you’re on a trajectory like that its not hard to remember them. Much of it was about how the band was born. You spend so many years doing mundane things like touring. You play, everyone has a good time, everyone gets paid and it went on like that for many many years.

“So when I wrote the book I concentrated on pivotal moments and its not hard to do that. I think anyone can sit down and document the big events in their life, but the thing that intrigued me was that they were very small events in the political fabric of the group and being a large band there was no clear leader. People who step up and give a clear direction in a band and say ‘this is where we are going’ are very rare.” When the band split in 1998, Mark saw the chance to reinvent himself, which led to some soul searching questions. “I think when the band ended it was a huge relief in some respects, but it also brought a whole set of new problems. I quickly realised that there were no real limits on what I could do on stage musically. There was a kind of artistic restraint in Hunters, and that’s not to reflect negatively it’s just a natural consequence of fame. “But when it ended I had to ask the question ‘who is this guy?’… what is my brand? I went out and thought what am I going to do? I realised the whole trajectory I’d been on was an overwhelming need for success and I thought it was down to being on stage, singing and playing guitar. “As the years have gone by, I’ve just played music I like. It’s become quaint, straight forward, and I’ve become a lot more simple in my tastes. I also realised I like singing. I’ve become much more aware of what my voice can do. We play a whole range of different music in this show, you have to do that, you have to be flexible in your approach to performing. “My daughter’s already told me she wants a career in music. The best advice I could give her or anyone is that you have to write good songs, its all about the songs… otherwise you will have a very short shelf life.“ Mark Seymour & The Undertow are appearing in Ipswich on August 10. Ipswich City Council will launch a Retail Smart pilot program in Springfield. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said council was joining forces with Bremer TAFE and Mirvac Orion to deliver this special program between August and November this year. Cr Pisasale said the Retail Smart City centre program was launched in November 2007 and is a multi-focused strategy developed to strengthen Ipswich city centre businesses and capture retail leakage expenditure. “The initiative is a free education and training program tailored to suit business needs and has been delivered in partnership with council, Ipswich Events Corporation and the Bremer Institute of TAFE. “More than 40 business owners and staff from a range of business areas in the Ipswich CBD have regularly attended and benefitted from the varied content of the quarterly training sessions. “For the Springfield Pilot program TAFE and council will work together to develop a questionnaire that will be distributed to all retail traders asking them to detail topics that are of concern to them as they run their businesses. “We will then work on identifying guest speakers to present at the forums to motivate participants to help improve their trading standards.” Cr Pisasale said two sessions would be held with retailers with dates still to be finalised. Inquiries about the Retail Smart program in Springfield can be directed to council’s Business Liaison Officer on 3810 6689.

A WORD FROM THE

EDITOR Its not every day you get to talk to someone who you spent your teenage years listening to, but I had that honour recently when talking to Mark Seymour who is coming to Ipswich next month. We talk to Mark in this issue, which is also full of local news, views and things to do. We’ve listened to our readers and have expanded our puzzle page, including a crossword and wordsearch so please let us know what you think about this, and what would you like to see more of in the mag. Plus we have all the news from the big military exercises that have been going on around South East Queensland, including activities at RAAF Amberley. Its good to see the Ipswich City Council take action on the number of shopping trolleys laying around the streets of Ipswich. Its a pain to see them just dumped all over the place, and in this issue we have news that as of July 1 next year all supermarkets have to take action which will get them to keep the trolleys on their premises. The goal is to one day have a city free of shopping trolleys on the streets, and who doesn’t want to see that, becuase at the end of the day the cost of all those trolleys comes back onto us, the consumers. Remember Ipswich Life is FREE, so please let our advertisers know you ‘saw it in Ipswich Life’.....till next time, Darren. darren@strikepublications.com.au

Ipswich the first city to act on trolleys Hopefully, seeing supermarket trolleys dumped anywhere and everywhere will soon be a thing of the past, as Ipswich becomes the first city in Queensland requiring all supermarkets and other retailers to implement an automatic wheel lock system on shopping trolleys.

Adrenalin pumping experiences in Ipswich WITH MAYOR PAUL PISASALE

After the recent excitement of the Ipswich 360, here’s a number of adrenalin pumping activities in Ipswich. Visit www. discoveripswich.com.au for all the details.

The need for speed Fans of the V8 Supercars can enjoy their own racing experience with hot laps out at Queensland Raceway. Get behind the wheel of a Ford or Holden V8 and experience the thrill of racing. A professional driver will show you how it’s done when you buckle up in the passenger’s seat. It’s a great gift idea for father’s day which is just around the corner, but who needs an excuse?

The days of shopping trolleys clogging creeks and rivers and littering parks and streets in Ipswich are almost finished. Ipswich Planning chair Councillor Paul Tully said council has decided to implement the new system across the city. Cr Tully said Ipswich retailers will be required to implement the trolley containment system by July 1, 2014. “They have 12 months to comply with the new arrangements,” he said. “It is not a big cost to solve a big problem with each new wheel lock costing just $45. “I encourage every council within Queensland and around Australia to follow Ipswich’s lead.” Cr Tully said the wheel locking mechanism was triggered by a buried electronic wire detector at all street exits. “It automatically locks one of the trolley’s wheels if someone tries to take it outside the shopping centre precinct and can only be unlocked by the retailer. “All shopping centres and supermarkets across Ipswich with more than 20 trolleys will be required to roll-out this trolley containment system,” Cr Tully said. “Those retailers with fewer than 20 shopping trolleys will be required to implement the same system if they receive two infringement

notices for their trolleys being found away from their store and on the city’s streets or parks within 12 months.” Cr Tully said retailers failing to comply with the new system faced fines of up to $5500. He said there had been reports of people using shopping trolleys for washing baskets, BBQ grills and mobile storage units. “Previous attempts to deal with these wayward trolleys have proven to be largely unsuccessful. “Coin operated trolley systems have not been effective with trolleys still often found kilometres from shopping centres. “The automatic wheel lock system will ensure that shopping trolleys stay where they belong — at the supermarket.” Coles at Riverlink is one of only two supermarkets in Ipswich to already have the system, and a spokesperson for Coles said that the system has proven to be a big success. “The wheel lock system has been successful at Riverlink and other stores where it is installed across the country. The system keeps trolleys at our stores for customers to use and prevents them being taken away and becoming a nuisance for the local community. “Most of our trolleys are not lost, they are just removed from our stores and then collected and returned by our trolley collection service

provider. Coles spends a significant amount on trolleys each year, some of which is the cost of collecting trolleys that have been removed from our premises,” the spokesperson added. “Abandoned trolleys are a nuisance to local communities and we are actively looking into ways to make this better across the nation.” Caption: Hopefully, sights like this in Bergin Street, Booval, will be a thing of the past with the new legislation

Lauren McGrath has seen a lot in her seventeen years. Up until she was thirteen Lauren lived in a home where domestic violence was all too common. Now, four years later, the Springfield Lakes teenager is in her final year of school and is organizing a fundraising event to raise funds for a charity that is there for victims in the same situation that she found herself. The event is being held at Drift Brookwater on September 20th in support of the White Ribbon Foundation. “I was a child of domestic violence, so for the first thirteen years of my life when my parents were married it was a very abusive relationship,” Lauren said. “Being the oldest of four children, I was in the awkward position of not only trying to stop it, but sheltering them from it at the same time. “It made me grow up real quick. I was thirteen when my parents divorced. I live with my dad now and things are much better.” Lauren is determined to spread the word that not only is domestic violence wrong, but that it has effects on everyone involved. “I think going through that has made me tougher, more determined. I want to do what I can to stop it. “I actually found about the White Ribbon charity when I was sitting in a police station in Melbourne, and I just started selling ribbons. They do a great job, and set up women’s refuges, do seminars at schools, along with funding for victims of violence. “I think it would have made a big difference if I’d have known about charities like this, and I’m pleased to say one of my teachers is an

ambassador for the charity. “The night will feature food, entertainment, a silent auction and live auction all supported by Helping Hands. “We’re hoping to sell 80 tickets and the goal is to raise at least $1500 for the charity. Drift at Brookwater responded to my call out to venues in the area and they were right behind the idea. “I’m happy to do it,” Lauren said. “For me, I didn’t let the fear take over… I didn’t let the trauma of what happened control who I was, but I reached a point within myself at the start of this year where I said I’m not getting anywhere with this, yes I’m raising money which is great but I’m not raising the awareness or actively saying I will NOT tolerate this to the public. “I got in contact with a local lady and started planning this event. I will speak and share my story, inspire people that you are a survivor, that there’s hope, people who care.” Lauren loves a Dr Suess quote that she uses as motivation. It goes like this… ‘You will come to a place where the streets are not marked. Some windows are lighted, but mostly they’re darked. You’ll escape all that waiting and staying, you’ll find the bright places where Boom Bands are playing.’ Tickets for the 3 course event are only $70 and you can get tickets via Drift at Brookwater or by emailing Lauren McGrath samples the meals on offer at winterwonderland@rocketmail.com the fundraising event at Drift Brookwater.

Wanted, Ipswich foster carers RSPCA Queensland is in desperate need of new foster carers, particularly in the Ipswich area. It’s a great chance to make a difference in the life of an animal. Foster carers provide a loving temporary environment for animals that may not be ready to go to new permanent homes for a variety of reasons. “We particularly need foster carers who have 6-foot fences and can take large breed dogs. Carers with no dogs of their own and no small children are particularly suitable,” said RSPCA Qld’s Foster Care Coordinator Julie Herbert. “This scenario often suits active retirees who still travel from time to time and can’t look after a dog all year round. While in foster care the RSPCA provides food and any veterinary treatment plus trained staff are on hand to assist the foster carer with managing any behavioural issues. Fostering is a win-win situation for the RSPCA, the carer and the animal. It eases pressure on the shelter, it spares the animal the stresses of the shelter and carers receive the benefits of pet ownership with food, grooming and veterinary care provided.” “But it’s not just carers for dogs who we need,” continued Ms Herbert. “We also need carers who can take cat-flu adult cats. These carers either have to have no cats of their own or have cats that are also cat flu positive. The cat-flu cats in foster care are recovering from the illness and are not critical patients.” “We currently have 210 foster animals in care from our Wacol Campus (63 cats, 42 dogs, 68 kittens and 36 puppies). At the height of cat breeding season each year, we usually have over 200 kittens in care on any given day. Prospective carers will need to attend a two hour basic foster care training session and pass a basic property check. Amy Wilkerson, is a regular foster carer, and enjoys having animals at her home. “Mischka is the second adult animal I’ve had, previously I’ve had puppies,” she said.

“I have an understanding of these animals, I love to have some cuddle time when they first wake up. It’s important that they get used to being around humans and learn to trust. Big dogs aren’t always easy to place, but the RSPCA supports every foster carer. The foster care program at the RSPCA Wacol Animal Care Campus needs foster carers who can provide temporary homes for large breed dogs, adult cats, felines recovering from cat flu, animals recovering from ringworm and post-surgery cases who need strict cage rest. Interested participants should email fostering@rspcaqld.org.au or call 3426 9997 for more information and the chance to join the program. RSPCA Qld will provide all food, health treatments and all veterinary care. Below: Amy Wilkerson with ‘Mischka’.

Touch WITH JANETTE

Simply the Best… in Underwear It’s time we talked about your undies, dacks, panties, undergarments, intimate apparel; whatever you’d like to call it! Could it be your ultimate finishing touch? A friend recently suggested that she would never consider being anywhere without her best undies on. Whether it be a quick dash to the corner store or a dinner date with her husband, she vows her secret to feeling beautiful is to always be wearing coordinating sets of her very best underwear. So clearly new to all this, I had two questions or even concerns may they be. The first was what actually is ‘the best’ underwear? Is it a brand, a fabric, a pretty pattern? The second was, if I was in most cases, the only one to see my best undies, what was the big secret? Well, I thought that I’d delve a little deeper into this and let me suggest it’s time you tried it! I didn’t spend a lot of money, which did surprise me and invested in two sets of coordinating underwear and a couple of pieces to match what I already had. Obviously new to this concept, I didn’t pick a special brand, I chose pretty colours and patterns but did find that certain styles are definitely not for every day! My hint would be to think comfortable and fun patterns, perfect for every day.

BLAIR

Option for online electoral enrolment Almost 1.4 million eligible Australians, or close to 10 per cent, are missing from the electoral roll. Half a million of those are aged 18 – 24 years, which means about 35.4 per cent of young people are not enrolled to vote. The good news is even easier to enrol with new online enrolment. The Australian Electoral Commission has a new tablet-and-mobile-friendly enrolment site. That means residents can check their enrolment, update details or enrol for the first time on their PC, tablet or smart phone, using a stylus, finger or mouse to sign the e-form. I encourage anyone who has moved house since the 2010 federal election to check and confirm their enrolment. I would love to see the young people of Blair cast their vote in the upcoming Federal election and referendum. Young people can enrol from age 17. Enrolling is easy and quick to do online at http://www.aec.gov.au/enrol. Check now online at http://www.aec.gov.au/check. Paper forms are still available from post offices, Centrelink, Medicare and my office. Remember, all Australian citizens over 18 must enrol and vote in federal elections and referendums. Open Day at UQ Ipswich on August 7

Child protection - Everyone’s responsibility The call is out for nominations for the second annual Child Protection Week Awards, which recognizes people who have made a contribution to the welfare of Ipswich children. It’s a message that Ipswich Police want everyone to take on board, and they are encouraging everyone to take responsibility when it comes to child protection in the lead up to this year’s National Child Protection Week which is on September 1st to 7th. Sergeant Nadine Webster from the Ipswich District Crime Prevention Unit said an annual Ipswich Region Awards program further promotes safety strategies in preventing child abuse in the local community. “Child protection and child safety is everyone’s responsibility,” Sergeant Webster said. “The Queensland Police Service is committed to working with the Ipswich community to promote child safety and the inaugural Ipswich Region Child Protection Week Awards will further assist in this cause.” The awards in Ipswich are an initiative of

6 IPSWICHLIFE

the Ipswich District Child Protection Week Committee, which includes representation from Queensland Police Service, Ipswich City Council, Department of Communities Child Safety and Disability Services and Ipswich Community Youth Service. The Child Protection Week Awards aim to recognise the programs, services and achievements that individuals and organizations have accomplished across the Ipswich and West Moreton region. “The awards have five categories acknowledging government and nongovernment professionals, volunteers, who have made an outstanding contribution to protecting children in our area.” The award winners will be announced at a gala dinner on Friday September 6 as part of National Child Protection Week activities. For more information visit www.theswich. com or contact ICYS Ipswich Community Youth Service on 3812 1050. Nominations close August 2nd.

UQ Ipswich Open Day is the perfect opportunity for you to experience what it’s like to be part of The University of Queensland. On Wednesday, August 7, between 2.30pm6.30pm, potential students, and their friends and family can explore the campus, meet with current staff and students and learn more about the study options available. With programs in health science, medicine, midwifery, nursing, paramedic science, arts and the UQ College all on offer in 2014, visitors to the UQ Ipswich Open Day will get to experience a very healthy study environment. Walking tours will be available and include a visit to the clinical skills facilities for nursing and midwifery, medicine and the all new paramedic science simulation centre. Make sure you have the chance to explore the campus grounds and world-class facilities. A free sausage sizzle, live entertainment and activities have also been planned. Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor Alan Rix said he welcomed students and their families to come along and get a feel for what the Ipswich campus had to offer. “Our staff and students will be on-hand to offer advice and provide insight into life at UQ Ipswich,” he said. “Holding our Open Day on a Wednesday afternoon means people can visit the campus at a time that doesn’t interfere with their weekend plans.” Professor Rix said several developments, including GP Super Clinic, Artius, and Exact Radiology operating on campus and available to students, had increased the appeal of studying at UQ Ipswich.

UQ College will also be on display to talk about the Associate Degree and Tertiary Preparation Courses on offer. Don’t forget to use the online planner to make the most of your day, available at youruq. com/openday. UQ Ipswich Open Day will be held on Wednesday August 7, from 2:30pm-6:30pm. No, its not the name of One Direction’s new album, it’s the sports and fitness craze that is being rolled out across Ipswich, with great results. Founded in 2009 by businessmen Niall McCarthy and James Tonkin, Zova is a fun program which combines physical activity with music and visuals, using a soccer ball along with other exercise equipment. Using a set of specific sports and fitness skills, all in time to the latest music, kids are flocking to try it out and parents are loving the results. Greg Farrell, a PE teacher at St. Peter Claver College is a convert to the program which is already at a few Ipswich schools, with more to follow. “We started using it last term and the students instantly loved it,” Greg said. “We did a demonstration at our open day and a lot of the students had their younger brothers and sisters all wanted to have a go. “At Claver, the students play Zova indoors, which means weather is never a problem. “They love the feel of it, the visuals, the audio… its engaging different types of learning. Normally, we play using the speaker system and a big screen where students can see the exercises on screen, and I use the Zova control interface on my phone or Ipad… it’s so easy to use.

“The students have all got behind it, I find they love anything that is different they will have a go at. I’ve actually used this with the netball coach, you don’t have to be a soccer fan, its universal. This is all about coordination and agility with a bit of rhythm.” Founder James Tonkin said that while it has only been around for four years, the growth in the concept has expanded very quickly. “I think the kids love the technology of it. Having the video and the exercises up on the screen for them with the music, just makes them engage with it straight away. It uses specific sports and fitness skills set to music rather than simpler dance moves like Zumba.” Zova will be rolled out to most Ipswich schools by the end of the year. Amazing things at Bethany Lutheran It’s amazing how many things often happen at once. On Sunday 21st July, Pastor Ben Henschke was installed as the new second Pastor of Ipswich Lutheran Parish. This is exciting for the school as the two Parish Pastors take Chapel and work with staff, students and parents. They are special people within our community. In other latest news: • Fibre Cable has been connected to our school to support faster internet connection and support the many ICT devices being used in our school. The one to one iPad deployment has this year been extended from Years 4 to 7. • The new Heumi Table has arrived for the Learning Plaza and the room has been outfitted with three 55 inch flat screen TVs mounted on the walls. Each is linked with an Apple TV allowing students screen from their iPad to be seen on the TV. • Bethany’s Remembrance Day Memorial is now complete. Thank you to Yamanto Powder Coating for donating the coating of the new cross for the Remembrance Memorial. The cross is made from a 6 metre length of square steel tubing donated by Direct Steel and a single plane propeller. Plants were donated by ICC Parks and Gardens, including the four Tuckeroos (shade tree). Ten bags of concrete were donated by Eastern Suburbs Hardware to cement the cross into the ground. Open day is coming up. Come and see what is happening at Bethany! It really is an exciting and inviting learning environment providing excellent facilities and programs for students.

At Bethany we believe primary education is very important for children in developing: l Excellent skills for learning l Christian values and standards for working with others l Social, emotional, physical and spiritual programs to maximise each students potential l Competencies in mastering the Australian Curriculum supported by the use of ICT

Public artwork tells history of early Ipswich

K I DS COMPETITION!

How would you like a chance to meet Andy Griffiths plus get a copy of his new bestseller ‘The 39 Storey Treehouse’? Duh. Of course you would!

A striking metal sculpture for Ipswich’s City Centre is set to be gifted to the city to mark the construction of its newest landmark. Ipswich City Council Deputy Victor Attwood said the sculpture would be installed on the corner of Bell and Brisbane streets outside the entrance to ICON Ipswich’s Tower A. The finishing touches are currently being put to the $93 million nine-storey commercial Tower A development in Ipswich’s CBD. Cr Attwood said the joint venture partners for the ICON Ipswich redevelopment project, Ipswich City Properties Pty Ltd and Leighton Properties (Brisbane) Pty Ltd, planned to provide the artwork to council. “This public artwork will be provided at no cost to council to celebrate the construction of ICON Ipswich. It will demonstrate the evolving history of the site and celebrate the long association that this location has had with Ipswich’s CBD.” Leighton Properties Project Director Brian McGuckin said the sculpture would be a celebration of a new era for Ipswich. “This iconic sculpture will mark the beginning of the changing face of Ipswich and provide the city with an historical landmark for the community to enjoy well into the future,” Mr McGuckin said. Cr Attwood said the ICON Ipswich site had a historical and special association with Benjamin Cribb who commenced a successful business in Ipswich in the 1850s.

Ask Sally YOUR WEIGHT LOSS QUESTIONS ANSWERED Ipswich Life is excited to have a new columnist in the shape of Sally Symonds. Sally is a weight loss machine, who has now made fitness and weight loss her career. As well as writing several books on her secret to weight loss and keeping it off, Sally often runs seminars in Brisbane and around the country. Sally is here to help with any questions you may have about how to lose weight, and more importantly how to keep it off. You can read more about Sally at www. sallysymonds.com.au. Email your questions to darren@ strikepublications.com.au and each issue we’ll put the best ones to Sally. For my first column, I’m going to use one of the most common questions I get asked. In fact, its one I get all the time… How can I stay motivated to exercise during the winter months? Winter; the comfort food, the cream soups, succulent hot chocolates and less revealing clothes — all equal up to the perfect time for weight gain. And winter is just not about highcalorie foods and hiding weight gain in bigger clothing. Even our desire to warm our houses means we reduce the need for our bodies to burn energy to keep

WITH SALLY SYMONDS

warm. Researchers have studied how “brown fat,” produced in response to a cold environment, accumulates during the winter months, which can translate to weight gain. But you can keep the weight off during the winter! To keep motivated, keep your summer shorts or bathing suit in your drawer, and try it on every few weeks to make sure it fits. You can also join an online fitness or weight loss system to help you start motivated by teaching you to exercise at home. Take advantage of your indoor time to try new, healthy recipes. And finally, put a picture of you in a bathing suit (or someone else you admire) on your refrigerator to remind you of your ideal body weight. Winter time doesn’t need to equal weight gain. By experimenting with indoor exercises, winter-related sports and activities, and positive motivational techniques, you can keep your summer body all year long!

It’s Tax Time at ITP Tax Time at G.J. Walsh & Co Tax time is upon us again and the team at G J Walsh & Co is ready to help clients take the pain out of managing their income tax requirements. We have a dedicated team who are committed to remaining up to date with all legislative changes and are ready to provide a professional and friendly service again this tax season. With the end of financial year here, there are a few changes individuals should consider when preparing their income tax returns for the year ended 30 June 2013. Firstly, the Personal Tax Rates have changed this year, with the tax free threshold increasing from $6,000 to $18,200, which means that taxpayers do not have to pay tax on the first $18,200 of their taxable income. However, the tax on taxable income between $37,001 – $80,000 has increased from 30c to 32.5c. Small businesses with an aggregated turnover of less than $2 million may be entitled to the new small business concession rules which include the instant asset write-off threshold which has increased from $1,000 to $6,500. Small businesses can claim an accelerated initial deduction for motor vehicles acquired in 2012–13 and subsequent years. For vehicles purchased for a cost of more than

$6,500, small businesses may be entitled to claim an initial deduction of $5,000 plus 15% of the balance purchase price. Our purpose is to create total client satisfaction through our talented people, specialised expertise, and a personal approach that delivers results. Their commitment has always been to offer the best solutions for our clients long term financial objectives and goals. To achieve that we have focused on solutions using quality comprehensive planning and thinking, including structures and strategies that we firmly believe set the right course for our clients and add true value into the future. It is our aim to establish strong relationships with our clients, becoming an integral part of their business structure, adding value every step of the way through our proactive approach and driving their success. The end of the financial year is upon us again and in these tough economic conditions, it is time to start thinking about how to get the maximum refund from your tax return this year. There have been a few important changes to the tax landscape this year. Firstly the tax free threshold has increased to $18,200. When you add in the low income tax offset this means you won’t pay any tax if your income is below $20,542. You may still have to lodge a tax return (if your income is below that level) if you have had tax withheld from your wage or salary — it is the only way you will get your money back. Another important change this year is that the ATO will be paying all individual refunds electronically. So you will need to advise your bank account details to your tax agent or in your own return if you prepare it yourself. For those people with private health insurance, the rebate is now subject to an income test so you need to be careful with those details. There is also an income test applied for the medical expenses offset. Unless your spouse is an invalid or a carer (or you live in a remote area of Australia) you can no longer claim the spouse offset if your spouse was born after 1 July 1952. If you are running a small business there may be a significant increase in the value of the assets you can write-off. With all these changes why take

unnecessary risks in preparing your own return. See the friendly, trained staff at the Income Tax Professionals for a worry-free tax return with the best possible refund. Simply bring in all your tax information: • Payment summaries from your employer(s), Government payments (incl Newstart — yes, it is taxable) and any pensions; • Any interest or other investment income; don’t forget those all-important receipts for your deductible expenses: uniforms, tools, work related vehicle usage etc. • Your bank details and, if applicable, your private health insurance statement Your ITP tax consultant will sort it all out for you and take the hassle out of tax time for a very reasonable, tax-deductible fee. To make it completely painless, you can even pay nothing up-front and have the fee deducted from your refund. ITP have a number of locations in the western suburbs including a new office at Redbank Plains shopping centre. Call in to any of the offices for free advice about your tax affairs. Locations are: Ipswich, 48A Nicholas St 3281 9360; Redbank Plains, Shop 3313B Level 3 Redbank Plains Shopping Centre 3818 7860; Goodna, Shop 6A St Ives Professional Centre Smith Rd 3818 0951. Spears has signed a three year deal to perform at one of the casinos. She’s also currently working on her eighth studio album and has a song on the soundtrack to the new Smurfs movie.

One new album this year just isn’t enough for Justin Timberlake. We’re eagerly anticipating the 20/20 Experience Volume 2 in September. Timberlake said: “I originally recorded a massive amount of material and decided on the 20 tracks that I wanted on the album over a year ago, but, when I was mixing and going through all of the songs there were so many that I loved — I couldn’t resist? I had to throw in something extra on the second half.” We’ll get to hear some of the new tracks when he tours in October.

Australia has caught P!nk (below) hysteria now she is in the country performing her Truth About Love tour. She’s planning on recording some of her record-breaking tour (her own records by the way!) for a DVD to release later this year. Her tour began in Perth & finishes up in Sydney in September.

Disney are having another crack at adapting Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book for the big screen. The most well known version so far is their animated adaptation (below) from 1967, but the new adaptation will be a liveaction version, in a similar style to Disney’s recent adaptation of Alice in Wonderland. There’s no word on the plot yet, but it could borrow from any of Kipling’s short stories about Mowgli’s adventures in the jungle. Kipling’s original short stories were first published in 1894.

Email your Top 5 of anything, and a photo of yourself to darren@strikepublications. com.au to be a Top Fiver! There’s a double movie pass in it for you...so get writing! After overwhelming demand for tickets, Beyonce (above) has added a second Brisbane show to her Mrs Carter World Tour in October and November.

In 2013, Australia achieved a unique place in the history of outlaw motorcycle gangs, boasting the highest per capita membership in the world. So just what are these gangs, and who makes up their membership? Drawing on insights from his experience as a former Sydney detective, Duncan McNab gives the inside history of outlaw biker gangs in Australia. From the bad old days of the 1960s when the first outlaw biker clubs entered into amphetamine manufacture, through to the 1984 Milperra Massacre that made world headlines, to the Sydney airport brawl between the Hell’s Angels and Comancheros culminating in the death of Anthony Zervas (Pan MacMillan)

From the jungles of Borneo, to the civil strife of Assam, to the black markets of Vietnam, Dr Tammie Matson continues her quest to help reduce the human-elephant conflict around the world. In this follow-up to her bestselling memoir Elephant Dance, Tammie takes on the black markets of Asia determined to make a difference and break the chains of rhino-horn poaching and the illegal ivory trade. Travelling from her new home in Singapore throughout South-East Asia, she meets presidents and traffickers in palaces and tourist markets, journeying to the dark heart of a dark industry. Returning to her beloved Africa, she finds old friends facing rough times and elephants and rhinos on the brink again. (Harper Collins)

Aboard the USS Blue Ridge

by John Armstrong

The United States warship, the USS Blue Ridge, is at sea off the Queensland coast, with the Commander US 7th Fleet, Vice Admiral Scott Swift aboard commanding the multinational Exercise Tasman Saber. IpswichLife had the opportunity to get a close look at how the Admiral and his staff run the war from a ship remote from the battle zone – following a flight out to the ship aboard a US Navy SH-60 Seahawk helicopter. More than 27,000 United States and Australian Defence Force personnel are training for combat as part of the major military training exercise, the fifth in a series of combined exercises. Maritime, land and air forces are focusing on combined Task Force operations during this high-end warfighting training exercise centred on amphibious operations. To operate as a combined coalition force US forces and the ADF need to train as they would fight together, and this is the cornerstone of the Tasman Saber series. As proof of this resolve, two senior Australian Defence Force commanders are onboard the Blue Ridge serving as the admiral’s deputy commanders. Brigadier John Coghlan and RAAF Amberley’s Air Commodore Tim Innes are fulfilling those roles. A major player in the exercise is the US 7th Fleet, which this year celebrates its 70th Anniversary, having been founded in Brisbane in 1943, during World War II, and has maintained its presence in the western Pacific and Indian Ocean for more than half a century. It served in the South West Pacific Area under General Douglas MacArthur, and the Seventh Fleet commander.

Both countries’ military forces train together to enhance their combined and joint war-fighting skills. The exercise increases interoperability, flexibility, and readiness, all of which are force multipliers in maintaining security and stability in the Asia-Pacific. Admiral Swift says that “exercises such as TS13 provide realistic, relevant training necessary to maintain regional security, peace

and stability, and provide effective and intense training to ensure our forces are capable, interoperable and combat-ready.” Some 9,000 Australian personnel from all three Services are taking part, benefiting from the scale of the exercise and its realistic combat training scenarios. The level of training, especially in amphibious operations and supporting those operations is unsurpassed by any other exercise in which the ADF takes part. In discussions with the Admiral and his staff onboard the genuine regard and respect the US military has for Australia is clear. Australia is a longstanding ally, and it shows in the familiarity and trust at all levels, with ADF and US personnel working side by side on planning and executing operations. “Our alliance is solidly grounded on shared values and common

security concerns and approaches,” Admiral Swift said. “We coordinate closely with our Australian partners to promote security in the region. Our alliance is as strong as ever and remains one of the most important in the world. I am encouraged by what our nations will continue to accomplish as we move together to the next century.”

The visit, at the invitation of Vice Admiral Scott Swift, Commander US 7th Fleet was part of the US Navy’s regional engagement program to enable community leaders to understand how the Navy conducts itself during military exercises such as the current Talisman Saber exercise. Cr Pisasale said that the USS Blue Ridge was an awesome capability, but what came home to him most was the sacrifices that the men and women of armed services worldwide make to keep their respective countries safe.

“These people are away from family and friends, at times for extended deployments - and it just shows how important it is for communities such as Ipswich to support our Defence Force personnel and their families.”

The upside of the Australian economy The role of human sentiment in the economy is important — it creates market momentum, but the sentiment itself doesn’t always stick to the data. In 2011 and 2012, consumer confidence was low and in most cities house prices dropped. But our unemployment was the envy of the developed world, interest rates were falling, inflation was tame and exports were booming. The data said ‘boom’ but Australians didn’t have the confidence to buy houses. In the most recent surveys, we’re again seeing a mismatch of sentiment and data. Take house prices. In the June, the average capital city house price rose a healthy 1.9 per cent in the month, and recorded a financial year rise in house prices of 3.8 per cent across the eight capital cities. It’s not a boom, but the trend shows confidence. In terms of forward orders, prices and unused capacity, Australian businesses went backwards in June. Business conditions were at their lowest since May 2009 and the sectors hurting the most were retail, mining and manufacturing. In other words, sentiment was picking up while the economic data started going backwards, just as in 2011–12 sentiment was low during solid economic data.

What are households and business owners supposed to do with this clash of information? My advice is to always control the controllable things and stay informed about the big picture, rather than be overwhelmed by it. For instance, if you own a manufacturing business and the news is all about how energy prices and the collapsing mining boom is hurting your industry, there is not much you can do about it.But you can cut costs in your business and use historically low interest rates to finance new technology, fund an expansion or refinance expensive debt. In your household you may be reading about a coming period of economic pain and the recent rise in unemployment. You can’t alter the information but you can put some savings aside, ensure security for your job and pay down debt. Work with what you’ve got, and that includes some very low fixed mortgage rates. There’s also your attitude, which is another thing you can control: beware of the exuberance of optimism and the panic of fear. Both will lure you into bad decisions, and bad decisions will bring you undone faster than any economic data. So, does human confidence hang-on in spite of economic predictions? I would love to know what you think. Get on Twitter and let me know would love to hear from you.

The Wolverine loves Audi Fans lined the streets of London’s Leicester Square recently to catch a glimpse of Australian actor and Audi ambassador Hugh Jackman at the world premiere of ‘The Wolverine’. Jackman was also joined by co-stars and of course the Audi R8, which makes a number of cameo appearances in the blockbuster. Hugh delighted fans at the premiere, sporting his trademark beard made famous by his character Logan, chatting and posing with fans and the Audi R8. Jackman was happy to drive himself to the premiere in the Audi R8 whilst the rest of the stellar cast, including Will Yun Lee, Rila Fukushima, Tao Okamoto, Famke Janssen and director James Mangold - were chauffeured to the red carpet by a fleet of Audi A8 limousines. The film, in cinemas now, is based on the celebrated comic book arc. This epic action adventure takes Wolverine, the most iconic

character of the X-Men universe to modern day Japan. Out of his depth in an unknown world, he will face a host of unexpected and deadly opponents in a life-or-death battle that will leave him forever changed. In the film, the character Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is driven by Yukio (Rila Fukushima) in an Audi R8 Spyder. Additional vehicles featured in the film include the Audi A8 L and the Ducati Diavel. Nissan Motorsport V8 Supercar driver Rick Kelly will drive in the Bathurst 12 Hour as part of the company’s new ‘Nismo Global Driver Exchange’. Nissan Motorsport V8 Supercar driver Rick Kelly will drive in the Bathurst 12 Hour as part of the company’s new ‘Nismo Global Driver Exchange’. Kelly, driver of the #15 Jack Daniel’s Nissan Altima in the V8 Supercars Championship and winner of the Bathurst 1000 in 2003 and 2004, will steer a Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 in the endurance event, entered and prepared by Nismo’s own factory team from Japan as the ‘Nismo Athlete Global Team’. The decision by Nismo to contest the Bathurst 12 Hour is testament to the growing stature of this event on the world stage, as well as the impact that the Nissan V8 Supercar program has made as the newest addition to Nissan’s global motorsport activities. Nissan Motorsport became the first new manufacturer to enter the V8 Supercars Championship in over two decades when it announced that it would re-enter the sport with a four-car factory team fielding Nissan Altima V8 Supercars. It will be Kelly’s maiden start in the Bathurst 12 Hour, but the 2006 V8 Supercars champion has a wealth of experience at the famous Mount Panorama circuit. Kelly has entered Australia’s ‘Great Race’ on 12 occasions, winning in 2003 and 2004. “I couldn’t be more excited about this opportunity to race a Nissan GT-R Nismo GT3 at the 2014 Bathurst 12 Hour,” said Kelly. “The GT-R is an amazing car in its standard form, so in Nismo GT3 racespecification, I think it will be capable of great things. “It’s exciting that this entry will form part of the Nismo Global Driver Exchange. It’s fantastic that Nissan is not only committed to an entry in the 2014 Bathurst 12 Hour, but is also sending drivers from its extensive global motorsport program to the event.” The 2014 Bathurst 12 Hour will be held on February 7–9. Further details and drivers for the ‘Nismo Athlete Global Team’ campaign at the 2014 Bathurst 12 Hour will be announced at a later date.
