Ipswich set to explode in Colour June is going to be a colourful month in Ipswich as an expected 15,000 people take part in the city’s very first ‘Colour Run’ Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said Color Run would be the brightest spot on the annual running calendar and sees participants completely covered by powder in every colour of the rainbow. “On June 1st right here in Ipswich over 15,000 runners from across Queensland will turn Robelle Domain into a sea of colour all in the name of happiness and health,” Cr Pisasale said. “That’s a huge number of people who are going to have an amazing day out in Ipswich and experience the friendliness and hospitality that make our residents and businesses famous.” Color Run is a highlight of the annual racing calendar and nothing short of a global phenomenon “It doesn’t matter if you run every day or have never strapped on a pair of sneakers, jump on the site, register your entry and get out here for a fantastic morning. “Color Run isn’t a race, no times are kept, no one loses and everyone wins. I’m committed to making Ipswich a happiest city in Australia and this is a great addition to that effort.” Division 1 Councillor

David Morrison said organisers had made a fantastic choice. “One of the great things about Robelle Domain is that it is large and flexible enough to attract premiere mass participation events like Color Run which bring large numbers of people right to the doorsteps of Ipswich businesses,” Cr Morrison said. “This means it is not only an attractive part of the city, but also an important economic asset. “Runners will then gather together back in the Domain for a colourful extravaganza of epic proportions at the ‘Finish Festival.’ “This family-friendly party atmosphere features great music from the stage and celebrations culminate in runners throwing coloured powder packets en masse.” Register at www.thecolorrun.com/australia. Audiences still get t ‘Puberty Blues’ was one of the most watched TV shows of 2012, and audiences have so far been lapping up the new series now screening on Network Ten. With a stellar cast including Claudia Karvan, Dan Wylie and Rodger Corser, it was a big hit, and proved that the book on which it was based, still hits a chord with audiences. Ipswich Life spoke to Jeremy Lindsay Taylor, who plays Martin Vickers on the show about the direction that Puberty Blues was taking now that there was no more source material to work from.
“Well, we got the go ahead late in 2012, and it was pretty soon after the first season aired,” Jeremy said. “I was blown away by the whole thing, the quality of the first season was outstanding and I had my fingers crossed we could go again. Now that the writers don’t have the book to follow, they have launched into space so to speak, as the creativity has just had to take off. “They know who they are writing for, the characters and the viewers…all without the restrictions of the book, so really the sky is the limit.” Puberty Blues means a lot to Australians, especially those who had to study the book at school, but it was the show that kicked off a whole slew of Aussie dramas set in the 1970’s like ‘Howzat’, and ‘Love Child’. “Its easy to imagine you’re in the 1970’s when you’re on set. You can’t pick anything wrong with it, the 70’s was such an iconic era and every detail on set is perfect. I put on my polyester shirt, my brown loafers, they blow wave my hair, and hey presto…I’m living

those ‘Puberty Blues’ in the 70’s! I grew up in the eighties, and the seventies to me seemed really daggy, but I think that period now was fantastic, its such an iconic Australian era. “As a nation I think we got our identity in that decade. Shows like this are so important to our culture, everything back then was so uniquely Australian. “From the language to the clothing, the cars…I guess that’s the popularity of dramas at the moment set in the 60’s and 70’s…it comes back to the book, it really summed up teenage Aussie culture at that time. The writers have really developed the characters in this season that weren’t so alive in the original book. There is so much that happens…it’s a rollercoaster for several characters. “It kind of is a fresh show, and at the readthrough for the first two episodes, we all felt like we hadn’t left. It just seemed to fit seamlessly. If you haven’t watched the first series it won’t matter, the characters are so alive, and the world so authentic that most people will be fascinated by it.” Puberty for most people is a memorable time of life, but in the 1970’s things were a lot different. Drink driving was common, you could smoke anywhere you liked and drugs were a rite of passage. “Its fair to say there is an underlying
darkness in the show. A lot of it has to do with the pace of the first series, it was slow and you really got to feel the pulse of the series, that darkness is there because of the authenticity of it, they don’t shy aware from it. “Its not all fun on the beach. The reality is that there are challenges and these kids are asking ‘what is my identity, what’s my part in all this’. “The adults have similar problems but they are middle aged, especially my character. He’s asking, ‘where do I fit in this world?’ I love that concept.” Puberty Blues screens Wednesday nights on TEN or catch up at www.tenplay.com.au Photos: Scenes taken from Season 2 of ‘Puberty Blues’ which also stars on screen wife Claudia Karvan.

Relay for Life set for 11th Year The annual Relay for Life is taking place for the eleventh consecutive year in Ipswich, raising money for the Cancer Council. Running over the weekend of Saturday March 29 and Sunday March 30, the Relay For Life is an 18 hour event where teams take it in turns to walk non-stop on a track, all through the night, and the event regularly draws between six hundred to a thousand. Tarana Cruice, a long supporter of the event from Tivoli, has thirteen people in her team, along with two generations in her family taking part. “Anybody in the community can get involved,” Tarana said. “The Cancer Council recommends each Relay For Life team consists of 10 to 15 team members, including a team captain. There are no age limitations or fitness requirements as the relay is suitable for everyone! “We have very special events - at 3pm we celebrate survivors and carers with the opening lap of the Relay. “Survivors and carers lead the opening lap, wearing special sashes to symbolise their courage and strength. They are then treated to afternoon tea. All relay participants then join in the next lap and the relay starts including entertainment on the stage. “At 7.00 pm there is a Candlelight Ceremony which honours those who have been victims of cancer and those who we care about and are suffering. The lights are turned off and a circle of candles in paper bags surrounds the oval. It is a very moving ceremony which includes bagpipes and special prayers. After this ceremony the entertainment

continues till 11.00 pm, and that’s when teams continue to walk throughout the night,” Tarana said. At 6.00 am there is a fightback ceremony and breakfast for all participants, with the Relay concluding at 9.00am with awards distributed for various achievements including highest fundraiser, Spirit of Relay, best tent site, best letterbox and more. Money raised at the event goes towards caring for those with cancer, and cancer research. “There are so many people suffering the effects of this terrible disease. This is one positive active way of assisting in the worthwhile fight carried out by Cancer Council Queensland. Hopefully, one day there will be a cure and this dreadful disease will be eradicated.” Anyone keen to get a team into the event is encouraged to visit the Relay site at www. relayforlife.org.au Below: Getting ready for the 18 hour event are (Front) Tarana Cruice & Blaze Turner with (Back L-R) Lina Ernst, Tonisa Ernst, Roland Cruice, Janette Turner, Neville Turner and Heidi Turner.

Images from World War I wanted With 2014 being the centenary year of the beginning of World War I in Europe, Picture Ipswich is looking for photographs of those who served overseas or at home and images of the Ipswich community during the war years. Ipswich City Council Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said Picture Ipswich was an online database website which provided a record of the city’s historical photographs and documents. “Picture Ipswich now contains around 10,000 images, depicting everyday life and historic events of Ipswich during the past 150 years,” Cr Pahlke said. “With more than 200 service personnel from Ipswich killed during World War I, our community has a strong connection to the conflict. “Picture Ipswich has many images of people who fought and returned, or paid the supreme sacrifice. “During March we would like to add more photographs that show the Ipswich community during World War 1, especially of service personnel. “To see what images the Picture Ipswich website already has on the conflict go to http://picture.ipswich. qld.gov.au “For those who have photographs of their
relatives’ time in the war or images of how the Ipswich community helped with packages for overseas or coped with rationing at home, placing the images on Picture Ipswich will ensure a lasting record of Ipswich’s place in this world conflict.” Members of the community with photos or print memorabilia can contact the Ipswich Libraries’ Digital Archivist on 3810 7272 or email pictureipswich@library.ipswich.qld.gov. au Please note that all the items are scanned and returned. Kart event speeds into town The KTEQ Rentals Australian Vintage Kart Prix comes to Ipswich next weekend featuring karts from the 1950s to the 1990s, on display and in a series of events. With heaps of historic motorcycle, custom car, speedway cars and bikes and kart displays, it’s a coup for Ipswich to be hosting the event. In town for the launch was five-time Moto GP champion Mick Doohan, in his role as Chairman of Karting Australia, where he helped Mayor Paul Pisasale do a few laps of the Willowbank circuit. More than 250 karts from all over the world will feature in the event, and is expected to draw big crowds. Highlight of the event will be a racing kart used by a young driver by the name of Ayrton Senna which he used in the Karting World Championships in 1979, along with the man who mentored him, Angela Parrilla as guest of honour. A contingent of Ayrton’s Brazillian friends are flying in specially to be with Angelo because his birthday is March 20th and Ayrton’s March 21st just a day before the big event. Mick Doohan said that the name alone of Ayrton Senna still draws a crowd. “Senna is a legend,” Mick said. “I personally knew him, he was a friend as well as someone who inspired so many to get into the sport, and its great that a kart that he was involved in is going to be on display, it
just adds to the environment of the event. “Karting is THE training ground. If you look at all the current F1 drivers and the current V8 drivers, they’ve all come from karting.” Doohan is happy to stay involved in the industry, but admit his racing days are well and truly over. “I’m still involved with motor sports, I’m on the board here and also on the board of the Australian Grand Prix Corporation which presents the F1 and MotoGP events so being involved is enough for me. Now and again I might do an invitation race in a car or something like that, but I’m well and truly past my competitive days!” The three day event is on Friday March 21 to March 23. Recycling
When it comes to recycling, every bit helps. As well as your usual household items like bottles, glass, paper and cardboard, there are other ways you can make sure other items are reused and recycled. Batteries can be recycled at your local Battery World store and there are sites where you can recycle old mobile phones and televisions.

Kate Miller Heidke’s new album ‘O, Vertigo’ is racing up the charts, repeating the success of her previous albums and cementing the girl from the Western suburbs of Brisbane as one of the country’s leading female performers. Chances are by the time you read this, the album is already sitting in the Top Ten. After the success of her last album Nightflight, Kate decided to leave the giant record label she was with, and went independent, asking fans to pledge money in return for the album, or other items like getting a credit on the CD, to a phone call from Kate on your birthday. It went ballistic and broke all records. The result made national headlines, when the target reached 100 per cent in just three days, and it currently sits at over 215 per cent with pledges still coming in. Kate is also donating five per cent of all the proceeds to the World Wide Fund for Nature’s efforts to preserve the Great Barrier Reef. Not a bad effort for the 32 year old who now is based in Melbourne, but is still a local girl at heart. “I have Uncles and Aunts who live out in Ipswich, in fact one of my Uncles is one of the Betros Brothers, and I hear that Ipswich has changed a bit since I was last there, and alot for the better I believe,” Kate said from her Melbourne base. The new album O Vertigo is a collection of songs that Kate has put together in what she describes as the ‘anti-Nightflight’, admitting that her last album was quite dark, but still didn’t stop it going to number one on the iTunes charts. “Nightflight was quite a dark record, very introspective, with lots of songs about death and decay. We did so much touring that by the end of it I didn’t feel great. I felt burnt out, even though the audiences were always so responsive. “With this album I wanted to write a bunch of songs as a release valve from that, make some joyful music…vibrant, colourful music. So in many ways this album is like the ‘antiNightflight’ album, and its very exciting to have it going out. “With Nightflight I shut myself away from humanity in Toowoomba, and you can hear
that sense of isolation in the album, but with this one I wanted to get out into the world. Many songs were written walking along the Brisbane River where we were living at the time.” Guest appearances on the album include UK folk artist Passenger, hip-hop artist Drapht and Megan Washington, who she has known for a number of years. “Megan and I have been old friends for a long time, and I’d always wanted to make something with her, and finally she agreed about six months ago. As for Passenger I wrote the song and it just seemed appropriate. “It really was a case of finding the collaboration and then writing the song. With Megan and I there’s always been a bit of professional rivalry there, and she’s so good there are flashes of envy on my part, but the duet really works well. “I love being able to connect with people on Twitter, and that’s how I initially reached out to Drapht, we actually got talking over social media and it’s a great tool to connect with other artists. It really is such a buzz when you hear from them.” Kate is indebted to the loyalty of her fans when she broke all records on Pledge Music’s website with the target reached in under 72 hours. “I was blown away by it. I suspected it would go well and meet my goal, as I have a group of quite devoted fans, so I knew they would be there to catch me. I think it made sense going independent on all sorts of levels, I just wanted to have complete ownership of my workspace.” Rewards for pledging started at downloads for the album, plus other rewards such as phone call on someone’s birthday, or even buying the piano that some songs were written on. But it was the birthday phone call
that proved to be very popular. “I’ve been averaging one birthday call every couple of days now, it’s a really joyful thing for me too, to speak to someone on their birthday and surprise them. They often chat about the gigs they’ve seen or which songs are their favourites. Never in history have fans had such direct access to musicians, and it’s a real exchange. I love it, actually.” Now the album is out, Kate will be touring over the next two months on the ‘O, Vertigo’ Tour, and then is off to appear in something completely different, singing in the English National Opera’s production of The Death of Klinghoffer at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. “I just think there is something so powerful about classical music, once you access that you can’t go back, its always going to be with you. It took me a while to learn to love Opera, the sound of it is so foreign, so alien, but once it got me, once it had its claws in me, it touches a part of me no other music can reach. “I’m reprising a role in this opera that I did in London two years ago, it’s the same production, and its at the Met in New York, so its all very exciting!” ‘O, Vertigo’ is out March14. Kate plays The Tivoli in Brisbane on April 5 and April 6.

Ipswich Library open more hours Increased demand for online library services and the growing use of mobile devices has led to new opening hours for Ipswich Libraries from March 17. Ipswich City Council libraries provide access to a range of online resources and interactive services to the community. An increase in digital borrowings of books, movies and music, and other enhanced online services had prompted a review of library hours. Cr David Pahlke said rapid changes in the use of technology such as smartphones and tablets to access Ipswich Libraries online had seen more customers access the library via virtual services. “In turn, there has been a change in the pattern of usage at all branches so it made sense to change opening hours of libraries, with the exception of the mobile library. “The new hours will bring more consistency and a better fit for peak customer demand.” Cr Pahlke said the Ipswich Central library would still open seven days a week from 9am,
with minor changes to evening hours on Wednesday and Thursday nights, which would have a new closing time of 6pm. “Ipswich Central library will now close at noon on Saturday and Sunday. Redbank Plaza branch will maintain the same number of hours each week, with the only change being to open two hours earlier at 11am Thursday and close at 6pm instead of 8pm. “Similarly Redbank Plains library will also keep the number of hours with an earlier opening time of 11am Tuesday and close at 6pm. Ipswich Libraries also provides an extensive suite of services, including training. “Training will continue under current schedules until March 31, with any changes after that date designed to fit in with the new opening hours and demand from the community,” Cr Pahlke said.

Book now for ‘Squaring the Wheel’ Book now for the circus stage extravaganza of the year ‘Squaring the Wheel’. Circus tricks, comedy and crazy contraptions will captivate families these April school holidays when the Ipswich Art Gallery presents this award-winning stage performance. Ipswich City Council Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said tickets were now on sale for the one-man show which was named Best Children’s Presentation at last year’s Adelaide Fringe Festival. “This is a fantastic opportunity for families to see a top class performer in a top class show at a very affordable price and tickets will sell fast,” Cr Pisasale said. “Squaring the Wheel will delight family members of all ages as performer Jens Altheimer takes audiences on a fantastic adventure with spectacular contraptions, circus tricks, puppetry, magic and music. “The Easter school holidays are a great chance for families to enjoy quality time together and word is spreading across South-East Queensland about the Ipswich Art Gallery’s excellent reputation for delivering quality children’s programs like Squaring the Wheel.” Star Jens Altheimer, who also created Squaring The Wheel, said audiences can expect a performance full of ‘surprises, humour and wacky gadgets’. “I was very interested in creating a show full of crazy contraptions, kind of over-engineered chain reaction machines, that in a very humorous way, make life more complicated instead of easy,” Mr Altheimer said. “Seeing that kids grow up in a world full of ‘black-boxes’ and mechanisms we can’t see and understand, I wanted to create another little universe where everybody actually sees and understands how everything works. “The biggest challenge was to connect the machines to the other big elements I was interested in exploring like circus and clowning as well as having a show with some emotional depth to it.” The Paris-trained performer, who has worked across Europe with leading companies 6 IPSWICHLIFE
including Compagnie Philippe Genty, said Squaring the Wheel was inspired by the possibilities that stem from the transformation and reinterpretation of different objects. “What, at first glance, seems to be a stupid action actually can have a surprising component to it: to find out that not always the easiest, slipstreamed or obvious solution is necessarily the best. “When we start thinking out of the box and have a second look at things, there might be hidden surprises and unexpected pleasures and treasures. “I like the idea of encouraging kids to believe in their ability and that with some imagination and persistence; they can change the world around them.”
Mr Altheimer, who considers Buster Keaton among his performance heroes ‘for his pureness of physical performance’, said the response from audiences motivates him to keep travelling and performing. “After 60 minutes of energy, concentration and patience, you feel the reaction of your audience, they have been moved and taken to new places; places that I created for them.” Squaring the Wheel starts April 8 and runs until April 19, with two performances daily at 10am and 12.30pm. There are no performances on April 13 or 18. Tickets to Squaring the Wheel cost $5 per person (all ages). Entry is free for children under two who do not occupy a seat (sit on adult’s lap).
Demonstrations of quirky contraptions, designed by Jens Altheimer, will also take place in the Gallery’s Main Hall after each performance. Bookings are essential and tickets can be purchased online via the Ipswich Art Gallery website www.ipswichartgallery.qld.gov.au. Squaring the Wheel is an adult-friendly 60 minute family show best suited to children over 5 years though suitable for all ages. Photos by David Wyatt and Francesco Vicenzi

The world’s best pocket spring mattress just got even better! At Beds R Us we are privileged to stock the unique Swisstek sleep system by Sleepyhead which is considered the world’s most durable and flexible pocket spring system, with more wire than any other innerspring mattress and increased turns in every spring. All Swisstek mattresses feature seven dedicated posture zones so that optimal support is delivered to every part of your body as you sleep. Each zone has a different level of flexibility to allow for exceptional conformability to your body’s curves, while minimising partner disturbance. March see’s Beds R Us launch the “New look” Swisstek range which has the tried and tested seven zone support system as a foundation combined with some of the latest innovations in bedding technology which is guaranteed to give you the perfect night sleep. Some of these improvements include… • The introduction of Fusion Gel to the comfort layers — This ensures the mattress maximises pressure relief and is one of the most temperature neutral products on the market to date. • The introduction of Bamboo / Silver line Tick — The bamboo and silver line both naturally have Antibacterial qualities. Silver line also aids in removing static electricity from the body which enables the sleeper to have a deeper more restful night. • The introduction of an airflow gusset — This allows air to flow in and out of the inside of the mattress. This helps keep the inside of the bed drier and healthier.
• It also extends the life of the comfort layers inside the mattress and in turn the entire mattress. When you sleep on a Swisstek mattress you not only get to sleep on the latest in bedding technology, but you go to bed knowing you are sleeping on a quality assured product, manufactured right here in Queensland — made by locals and delivered to you by locals. To launch the “New Look” Swisstek Mattress range, the team at Beds R Us have an amazing offer where you can purchase a King or Queen Swisstek Mattress for the price of a Single! Your local team at Beds R Us look forward to seeing you in-store soon.

Shayne Neumann MP Federal Member for Blair Working for our community in Ipswich and the Somerset region
AUTUMN 2014 EDITION Out and about in Blair As your local Member, I like to be accessible to you. That’s why I hold weekly mobile offices around Ipswich and spend at least one full day every month or so at various locations in the Somerset region so that people living in rural areas don’t have far to travel if they have a Federal government issue or concern they want to chat to me about. Having the opportunity to meet and speak with as many residents in Ipswich and the Somerset region is a priority for me. I believe it provides the right balance for me in my job as your local Member. The Ipswich and Country shows will commence their annual rounds beginning in April, and I will be holding a mobile office at each and every one of these shows. Whether you live in Kilcoy or in Karalee, come along to your local Show and have a chat with me. I’d love to see you there. For more information about where and when my mobile offices are, please call my electorate office on 3201 5300. Warm regards Shayne Neumann, MP Federal Member for Blair
Families in Blair to be hit with $4.73M GP Tax Families in Ipswich and the Somerset will be among the hardest hit by Tony Abbott’s new GP Tax, new Medicare analysis has shown. In an unprecedented attack on Medicare, the Abbott Government plans to charge Australians who can least afford it to see the doctor. The Government is talking about $6 now but how long will that last and what’s to stop this new GP Tax from just going up and up? Families in Ipswich and the Somerset could be forced to fork out a total of $4,732,890 to visit the doctor if Tony Abbott breaks another election promise and introduces a new GP Tax. In the great traditions of Medicare, Australians should receive the healthcare they need not the healthcare they can afford. Families in Ipswich and the Somerset who are already struggling to make ends meet cannot afford to pay to take their sick child or elderly parent to the doctor. In Blair, where 88% of services are bulk billed, a $6 GP Tax could cost families $4.73m. Make no mistake, the Prime Minister’s GP Tax will hit families who can least afford it. People in Queensland could pay more than $141.7m each year for primary and in many cases preventative health care. Tony Abbott said before the election he wouldn’t bring in any
new taxes. His new GP tax is a broken promise to millions of families that they won’t forget. Labor will continue to fight any attempt by this government to dismantle universal healthcare in Australia. I am encouraging residents in Ipswich and the Somerset region to sign a petition.
I will have the petition with me at mobile offices on Saturday morning and it will be available to sign in my electorate office in the Brassall Shopping Centre. We need to make our voices heard on this issue, so please contact my office on 3201 5300 if you’d like to put your name to the petition.
Medicare Petition available at my mobile offices or in my electorate office.

New driving course to get Ipswich job seekers on the road Earlier this year, I launched a new learn-to-drive program to help job seekers in Ipswich, Somerset and Lockyer regions to get a job. The Driver Mentor Program, funded by the former Federal Labor Government and initiated by The Salvation Army Employment Plus (TSAEP), is jointly run with Sign-A-Rama, Bremer Ford, the Ashley Institute and the Ipswich City Council. The Program is designed to help disadvantaged young people aged between 17 and 25 who would otherwise find it difficult to accrue the necessary 100 hours or driving experience necessary to qualify for their driver’s licence. Last year in a similar program, 20 local young people were able to attain their manual driver’s license, half of whom found work immediately, as a direct result of this investment by the former Federal Labor Government. Organisations have raised the issue of the requirement to log 100 hours of driving experience as a key barrier to employment and participation in skills development activities. This is what prompted the decision to identify a local solution that could be sustained by the community. Many employers stipulate a driver’s licence as a requirement for employment and in families where young
people have no access to a licensed driver, registered car or the resources to complete their 100 hours. This barrier contributes significantly to limiting the job and career prospects of these young people. The Driver Mentor Program means that young people are less likely to get into trouble with the law and more likely to move onto productive employment and community participation. Blacksoil intersection upgrade work on schedule Work on the Warrego Highway and Brisbane Valley Highway intersection upgrade is well underway and on track for completion at the end of the year. Once complete, the $93.4 million joint Federal and State project should improve safety, ease congestion and speed up freight movements along this vital freight link by separating the major traffic movements at the intersection. With approximately 40,000 vehicles per day travelling the Warrego Highway, 9,000 on the Brisbane Valley Highway and 6,000 on the Wulkuraka Connection Road, turning onto the Warrego Highway can be difficult, especially in peak times. The traffic on all three roads is expected to more than double by 2031, so it is important to move now on this vital infrastructure project. 12 IPSWICHLIFE
Ipswich and the Somerset Region set to benefit from new Trade Training Centre Local secondary school students will have increased access to world-class education and training facilities, with a Trade Training Centre at Ipswich State High School in Blair nearing completion. The Trade Training Centre, which will service secondary students from Rosewood State High, Lowood State High, Bremer State Secondary College, Bundamba Secondary College and Ipswich State High, was allocated $5 million in funding through the former Federal Labor Government’s $2.5 billion investment to give students in years 9-12 the opportunity to access trade training facilities. Focused on both general and civil construction, this Trade Training Centre will include: • 6 bay Titan shed for storage of dingo excavators • Basic landscaping plan • 500sqm training road for practice of driving excavating equipment. • An area for industry partner representatives, e.g. Skills Tech and HIA • A receptionist on a traineeship for a couple of days per week • Large specialised areas for metalwork (fitting and turning, metal presses for making box trailers), welding, woodwork (turning and lathes), wet areas (concreting, cement etc), Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) etc • Non-workspace areas for lunch to get students used to the idea of a workday. • Centre plans to provide teaching in other skill areas dependent on future workplace shortages. This is a fantastic opportunity for
local students to benefit from industry standard trade training infrastructure and equipment. This Trade Training Centre will be one of four facilities, worth more than $11m in total, built in this electorate since 2008. Secondary students from 12 schools are benefitting from more career options with the Trade Training Centres (TTCs), located at Ipswich State School, St Peter Claver College, Staines Memorial College and St Edmund’s College. TTCs play an important role in creating a link between schools, students, industry and local businesses. The program will help support students to stay in school and get a qualification as well as address skills shortages in traditional trades and other occupations. Recent progress reports clearly show these TTCs are being built on time and are achieving remarkable results for students. The Coalition Government has already stated that it will axe future Trade Training Centre funding. This Government does not care about creating tomorrow’s jobs and it doesn’t care about finding new job opportunities for Australian kids. Labor want to make every school a great school and I am proud to have delivered the former Federal Labor Government’s investment in trade training, record funding to the education sector, computers in schools, better school infrastructure and greater support for our teachers in Ipswich and the Somerset Region since 2008.

Goodstart Booval opens new outdoor learning space I recently attended the official opening of the new Outdoor Learning Space at Goodstart Early Learning in Booval. Goodstart is the Nation’s largest early learning provider, and I took the opportunity to congratulate them on their vision and commitment to the future of Australia’s children by ensuring they have the best possible start in life. The grant for the new outdoor learning space was made possible through the former Federal Labor Government’s National Partnership Agreement (NPA) on early childhood education to ensure that all Australian children have the opportunity to participate in quality early childhood education before they commence full time school. The former Federal Labor Government delivered record investment to open up kindy places across the country, including funding for capital works and refurbishments to make sure there were enough places. From 2008 to 2013, a total of $955m was delivered and in July 2013, a further commitment of $655.6m to the end of June 2014 was made.
I recently attended a Saturday game at Ipswich Vigoro at which I presented Lee Scuds with a cheque to assist Ipswich Vigoro with costs associated with its 2013/2014 State Titles. The pink bows are in honour of the McGrath Foundation’s Pink Stumps Day which was coincidentally on the day I attended!
Mr Neumann with Emma and Melissa from Goodstart Booval.
The new agreement was to ensure service delivery would not be interrupted or reduced in 2013 or 2014, consistent with the Labor Party’s ongoing commitment to universal access to early childhood education, including for vulnerable, disadvantaged and Indigenous children.
Goodstart Early Learning at Booval received $99,000 and is one of three Goodstart Centres in the Ipswich region to receive this funding. The other two Centres, based at Collingwood Park and Churchill were also successful recipients and received $175,000 and $180,000 respectively.
Dinmore Murri Baptist Church commemorates 6th Anniversary of The National Apology On Sunday the 2nd of March, I attended the 6th Anniversary commemorations of the National Apology at the Dinmore Murri Baptist Church. As the local Federal Member and as Shadow Minister for Indigenous Affairs, I was asked to read aloud the Apology to the congregation. It was moving to read the Apology to the people gathered at the service. It reinforced to me our commitment and our pledge toward Closing the Gap. At the time of the National Apology, former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd said that the apology would help to build a bridge of respect between Indigenous people and other Australians. The Dinmore Murri Baptist Church was built in 1895 and then rebuilt as a Church and Community Centre for the local Murri population. The Murri Baptist Church was established in 1982 and is integral to the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island community. The Murri Ministry delivered food and household items during the 2011 floods and again in 2013. I was honoured and privileged to attend the special commemorative service of the National Apology and I commend the Dinmore Murri Baptist Church on their work in the community and on their initiative in holding this very special service. Opportunity for youth to participate in Y20 summit Young people living in Ipswich and the Somerset Region have the opportunity to participate in the Y20 Summit, held in Sydney during July this year. The Y20 Summit is the premier youth forum associated with the G20 event and is organised by the Y20 Planning Group, with support from the Department of Education. This is a terrific opportunity for people aged 18 to 30 to engage and participate in important global economic challenges and policy discussions from the G20 member states. The Summit will provide an excellent opportunity for five young Australians to represent Australia at this international event. The Summit runs from 12 — 15 July and Australian delegates will work with delegates from the G20 member and invited countries, supported by the Australian G20 Planning Group, to develop policy on the broad themes of growth, youth unemployment, and sustainable economic development. I encourage young people living in Ipswich and the Somerset region to have their voices heard at this important summit, the outcomes of which will be presented at the November G20 leaders meeting in Brisbane. For more information on the selection criteria and Y20 Summit, go to www.y20australia. com<http://www.y20australia.com> or phone the Y20 information hotline on 1300 857 536. IPSWICHLIFE 13

Local kids start the year smiling Around 32,000 children in Ipswich and the Somerset Region started 2014 smiling as the Labor’s $2.7 billion dental program began on the 1st of January. Local children, aged two to 17, will benefit from the previous Labor Government’s dental package, Grow Up Smiling. Over 32,000 children in Ipswich and the Somerset Region will find it as easy to go to the dentist as it is to go to their GP. Grow Up Smiling provides each eligible child with $1,000 in dental benefits every two calendar years. This will help to pay for basic dental care, such as check-ups, x-rays, fillings, root canals and extractions. Poor childhood oral health leads to poor adult oral health - Grow Up Smiling will ensure children have healthy teeth now so they have healthy teeth into the future. Research by the Australian Institute for Health and Welfare shows that more than 47 per cent of Australian 12-year-olds have some decay in their permanent teeth, of which almost half is untreated. I call on the Abbott Government to quarantine the program, now referred to as the Child Dental Benefits Schedule, from the Commission of Audit’s cuts. The Coalition voted against the Grow Up Smiling package in the previous Parliament so it is important that the Prime Minister and his Health Minister continue to support this important Labor reform. Grow Up Smiling was part of $4.6 billion of funding the previous Federal Labor Government provided over six years for
reforms to improve access to dental services for many children, seniors and low-income Australians, including: * $1.3 billion for around 1.4 million additional services for adults on low incomes, including pensioners and concession card holders, and those with special needs, who will have better access to dental health care in the public system; * $225 million for dental services - both in terms of capital and workforce - will also be expanded for people living in areas of need, outer metropolitan, regional, rural and remote areas; and * $2.7 billion for around 3.4 million Australian children who will be eligible for funded dental care (Grow Up Smiling). The Child Dental Benefits Schedule is available to eligible families in receipt of Family Tax Benefit A or a relevant Australian Government payment. For further information, contact your local dentist or call my office on 3201 5300.
Additional funding for Home and Community Care I recently welcomed approval of additional funding for local health and community care providers in the Ipswich and Somerset region. The Commonwealth Home and Community Care program (HACC) provides funding for older Australians to receive basic maintenance, support and care services in their own homes, like cleaning, social support and transport. In July 2012, the former Federal Labor government took full funding and operational responsibility of the program in all states and territories, except in Victoria and Western Australia. The 2013 funding round allocated more than $53.8 million to service providers in Queensland, which built on the former Federal Labor government’s investment of $394 million in Queensland in 2012-13. People want to remain independent, in their own homes and communities, close to friends and family for as long as they can. This funding will help many people stay at home rather than move prematurely into residential care, providing the practical assistance that many older Australians need. A total of six projects in Ipswich and the Somerset have been allocated an additional $2,045,738 in funding: Each Centre-based day care $344,955 Baptist Union of Australia Domestic assistance $597,300 West Moreton-Oxley Medicare Local: Allied Health $580,283 Domestic Assistance $341,280 Nursing Care $ 53,160 Social Support $128,760 The HACC Program plays a vital role in assisting frail older people and younger people with a disability remain independent, delivering essential services such as meals on wheels, home care, respite, social support and community transport. This additional funding will make a real difference in the lives of frail older people and younger people living with disability.

Introduction to PBS, a winner A few weeks ago I attended and spoke at the launch of a new publication ‘An introduction to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme’ by Medicines Partnership Australia. Informally and affectionately known as ‘The idiot’s guide to the PBS’, this 11 page publication comprehensively yet simply explains Australia’s Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme. The Medicines Partnership of Australia (MPA) is an alliance of peak industry associations representing key members in the supply chain that deliver medicines and pharmacy expertise to Australian consumers. Its members include; The Pharmacy Guild, Medicines Australia, the Generic Medicines Industry Association, the Australian Self-Medication Industry, the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia and the National Pharmaceutical Services Association. The publication covers topics that many of us may hear about but don’t always understand the nuts and bolts of. For example, the publication describes in plain terms exactly how the PBS works. It explains what’s involved in getting medicine listed on the PBS, what consumers pay for and how the PBS has changed over the years. In fact, I was so impressed with the publication I ordered several hundred copies. I carry out weekly mobile offices in my electorate at which numerous people come along to and chat with me. This publication is something I’d like to have with me when I’m out and about so that people in Ipswich and the Somerset can be better across the PBS - something that affects all of us at some stage in our lives. For more information about “An introduction to the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme” please feel free to call my electorate office on 3201 5300.

Gold Logie winner John Wood and Director Mark Grentell will attend the first screening at Ipswich’s Limelight cinema, treating the audience to an exclusive Q&A session following the film. Mark Grentell’s debut feature film stars John Wood (Blue Healers), Andrew S Gilbert (Kiss or Kill), Felix Williamson (The Great Gatsby), and comedian Damian Callinan (Spicks and Specks). The comedy is a story of legendary characters and community spirit, which culminates in an exciting match of backyard cricket…something which every Australian has done at least once! Opening on November 7 last year in its hometown of Wagga Wagga, this film is the most successful independent Australian film release of 2013/14. With the support of the film’s distributor, Umbrella Entertainment, Backyard Ashes has played on over 50 regional screens around Australia and has recently cracked the Sydney market. “Backyard Ashes was a smashing regional success, and we knocked ‘em for 6 in Sydney. Bringing itto the people of Ipswich will make for a perfect final season,” said Richard Moore from Umbrella Entertainment. “Backyard Ashes is an exciting, feel-good film that showcases some of Australia’s most acclaimed actors and filmmakers, as well as introducing up and coming stars,” said Director Mark Grentell. “People all over Australia have called us, saying it’s the funniest Australian film since The Castle. We’re so excited to share this brilliant Australian story with Ipswich audiences.” Backyard Ashes final season will be screening at Limelight and Event Cinemas Ipswich. The best ice cream flavours of all time! While munching on some Ben & Jerry’s in the Ipswich Life office, the thought occured to us what is the best ice cream flavour of all time? So we went on Facebook and asked our Ipswich Lifers, with heaps of interesting results. In the end, we couldn’t go past Chantelle B from Deebing Heights and her list of flavours. Congtrats Chantelle, a double movie pass is in the mail! Umm… we did buy some ice cream for you too but it melted. Honest, we really did! ........*Burp* 1. Ferrero Rocher This tastes like nutella but better. 2. Wagon Wheel Yes, there is such a thing at ‘Nitrogenie’ at South Bank. Biscuit, marshmallow and strawberry jam — yummmmmooooo! 3. Lemon Meringue With its ‘zing’ flavour, this is a better (and tastier) ‘wake-up’ solution than coffee. 4. Creme Brulee A cheekier alternative to vanilla. 5. Peanut Butter Nutty and naughty in every bite.
Awards season has reached its climax, with one of the best Oscar shows of all time, after Ellen Degeneres broke Twitter with a celebrity filled selfie (below) that was retweeted millions of times. 12 Years a Slave has been a hot favourite this awards season for Best Picture, and it didn’t walk away disappointed, winning the Academy Award for Best Picture; Best Actress in a Supporting Role (Lupita Nyongó); Best Adapted Screenplay (John Ridley). Of course, Gravity was hot on it’s tails, taking home the trophies for Best Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki); Best Directing (Alfonso Cuaron); Best Film Editing (Alfonso Cuaron & Mark Sanger); Best Original Score (Steven Price); Best Sound Editing; Best Sound Mixing & Best Visual Effects. Matthew McConaghy also picked up Best Actor for his work in Dallas Buyers Club and (finally) a Disney film was named Best Animated Film — Frozen (below)

Australian Air Power on show More than 30,000 people flocked to RAAF Base Point Cook outside Melbourne for the Centenary of Military Aviation Air Show, which brought together military aircraft of the past along with current in-service types for a spectacular event over the first weekend in March. There was even a glimpse of the future with a full scale replica of Australia’s fighter of the future, in the F-35A Lightning II 5th Generation stealth fighter. In perfect conditions, the RAAF displayed it’s past and its current Air Power capability.

First RAAF pilots to train on F-35A Squadron Leaders Andrew Jackson and David Bell, currently fighter pilots at RAAF Base Williamtown, are the first two Australian pilots selected to undergo training in the US on the F-35A Lightning II, commonly known as the Joint Strike Fighter. Deputy Chief of Air Force, Air Vice Marshal Gavin Davies said the training represented an important milestone towards introducing the F-35A into RAAF service. “Our history is important, and our first two pilots will make history as they become our first pilots to fly this fifth generation aircraft. “Not only do they represent the future of RAAF, they will have an important leadership and training role as future instructors for the F-35A,” AVM Davies said. The fighter pilots were selected for their operational flying skills, extensive experience and leadership. They are among the very best in their field. They will soon travel to the US to commence their training. “The F-35A will be Australia’s first 5th Generation aircraft and will provide us with an incredible air combat capability. I’m excited to be given the opportunity to take a leading role in its introduction,” Squadron Leader Jackson, a qualified Fighter Combat Instructor, said. Squadron Leader Bell, a qualified Test Pilot, was equally impressed by the opportunity.
“This aircraft gives fighter pilots a level of situational awareness that far exceeds legacy platforms. It will be an honour to work alongside the US Air Force and to be at the leading edge of delivering the F-35A to Australia,” he said. The RAAF’s first two F-35A aircraft are scheduled to complete production mid-2014 .

New scheme reduces electricity costs for Defence families The Australian Defence discount program run by Australian Partners of Defence, APODDefence Discounts online, has joined forces with Energy Watch Australia to negotiate an exclusive discount on the cost of electricity for defence force members, past and present, and their families in New South Wales, Victoria and Southeast Queensland. APOD is a membership program offering discounts on hundreds of products and services, negotiated exclusively for the wider defence community, in recognition of their service to the nation. APOD recognises the rising cost of electricity as one of the many unique challenges associated with Defence service. With electricity prices increasing up to 35.8 per cent over the past three years in New South Wales, Service personnel who are reliant on defence housing have few options to proactively reduce their household bills. One serving member noted: “we move around a lot so we don’t get to benefit from loyalty savings and benefits that are available to the general public. To reduce the cost of our bills, we resort to following the kids around, turning off lights or only using the heating when absolutely necessary, which makes life tough for our families in some of the regional areas we get posted’.
Retired veterans have expressed similar concerns, as they reduce costs by ‘living in the dark when the sun goes down’, as one member put it. APOD’s Director of Sales and Marketing and army spouse, Kerry Newsome, said: “When put to the test, under the APOD Energy Watch deal, an average defence household in Victoria could save up to $638 p.a., $276.75 p.a. for New South Wales and $257.61 p.a. for South Eastern Queensland“. The APOD offer has been tailored to meet the demands of defence life with no contracts, and no exit fees, making it unique in the market place. The APOD Energy Watch offer is available via the APOD website www.apod. com.au. In New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Queensland and the ACT, both the electricity and gas industries have been deregulated for residential and business consumers. Deregulation means that consumers are free to choose their electricity and gas retailer, and be able to deal with the one retailer for both electricity and gas services. Energy Watch are currently in negotiations to secure an exclusive deal for South Australian APOD members. The offer will be included into the program once it has been finalised. To learn more about APOD – Defence
Discounts Online and the 100s of other discounts available, or to find out if you are eligible to join and take up the APOD – Energy Watch offer, please go to www.apod.com.au or call APOD at 1800 339 550.

Playing the Inflation Game The cost of debt has a large bearing on the capital gains you achieve in your investments. Just look at property developers when interest rates rise suddenly. But readers should also understand inflation, because it’s inflation that drives interest rates. Economists measure inflation from the Consumer Price Index, which takes a basket of 11 types of household items and measures whether prices have varied over the quarter. Inflation rises on strong economic activity and it falls when the economy is ‘cooling’. But an inflation rate of between 2 and 3 per cent is not too hot or too cold; it’s the right environment for strong employment and sustainable economic growth. The Reserve Bank keeps inflation in this 2–3 per cent range by changing interest rates. If inflation is trending over 3 per cent, the RBA can increase the price of money to decrease the demand for borrowing and spending. When inflation is weak, lowering interest rates will increase borrowing and spending. Inflation is currently at 2.7 per cent. It has been in a largely benign range for more than a decade. In the past 12 years, inflation exceeded 4 per cent in two brief periods in 2006 and 2008.
When you look at the official interest rates over the same period you see them ranging from 7.25 per cent to 2.5 per cent. The important thing is that the price of debt (or cash deposits) will go up and down, so that inflation can remain in an optimal range. When we decide on a fixed or variable rate loan, we’re effectively betting on how robust the economy is over the next couple of years, as reflected in inflation. There are high numbers of borrowers refinancing into fixed rate loans. Many economists believe house prices are rising too fast, that the housing boom will push up inflation and the RBA will have to raise rates to tame rising inflation. The Reserve Bank doesn’t seem concerned about house prices and it believes very low interest rates are appropriate for the current economy. It’s a good time to be reading the business pages and trying to read the economy. Chrysler to lead V8 Supercars field Chrysler’s iconic, muscle-bound 300 SRT8 sedan will lead the V8 Supercars field in 2014 as part of the brand’s exclusive partnership with the international motor racing championship. The 300 SRT8 will perform as the Pedders Chrysler Safety Car at all rounds of the 2014 series, which started last week with Clipsal 500 in Adelaide. The mighty 6.4-litre HEMI V8 engine, which develops 347kW of power and 631Nm of torque, will ensure the 300 SRT8 keeps the thoroughbred V8 Supercars comfortably at bay when it leads them on race restarts and during caution periods. Two other 300 SRT8s will also take to the track this year as official Pedders Chrysler Course car and Chrysler Medical Car, providing a distinct Chrysler flavour in the second year of Fiat Chrysler Group’s association with the V8 Supercars Championship. Fiat Chrysler Group Director of Marketing Mark McCraith said the association put the Chrysler 300 SRT8 on the world stage while highlighting its performance and styling elements. “This is an impressive muscle
car with instantly recognisable looks,” Mr McCraith said. “We are looking forward to seeing the three Chrysler 300 SRT8s perform important roles for the championship in front of millions of enthusiasts throughout the season.” The cars used for official duty feature a dynamic livery and flashing light fittings to maximise their visibility on track but are mechanically the same as the road going versions available in showrooms across Australia. These include leather seats, satellite navigation, reversing camera, active suspension, forward collision mitigation and 20-inch alloy wheels. Below: Chrysler 300 SRT8

Ford Celebrates Aussie Ute’s 80th Ford is celebrating the 80th anniversary of its Australian invention of the iconic ute, which led to the development of vehicles such as the F-Series and Ranger and led to years of truck leadership. Not only was it an Australian invention, but the concept has been exported to the world, reinterpreted by other manufacturers and gained a legion of fans everywhere. The story of the first Ford ute is a key part of Ford’s rich heritage that has seen the development of such iconic vehicles as the F-Series. Like all good ideas, the first integrated passenger-car based Ute was born out of necessity, very much like the first Model T Ford. In mid-1933 the then managing director of the Ford Motor Company of Australia, Hubert French, received a letter from a farmer’s wife in Gippsland, Victoria. She wrote: “My husband and I can’t afford a car and a truck but we need a car to go to church on Sunday and a truck to take the pigs to market on Monday. Can you help?” What the customer wanted was a vehicle with passenger car comfort but could also carry loads. French passed the letter on to a young design engineer, Lewis (Lew) Bandt, who had joined the company only a few years previously as Ford’s only designer. Bandt was just 23 years old but was already showing a flair for design for which he was to become quite famous until he retired in 1975.

Toyota records best sales in 4 years Automotive market leader Toyota Australia has recorded its best newvehicle sales since 2010 for the first two months of the year.
Bandt died in 1987, after being involved in an accident driving a restored version of the Utility he helped make famous. He completed his original design in October, 1933, and quickly produced two prototypes for testing. By January 23, 1934, he had the final drawings and the new Ford ute went into production with Bandt christening his design a ‘coupe-utility’. When the first utes came off the production line in 1934 two were sent to Canada. The car even caught the eye of Henry Ford. Bandt’s original full-scale blueprint drawings of the 1934 coupe utility are now archived in Australia and the rebuilt version of the Bandt coupe-utility is – appropriately – housed in a museum in the rural country Victorian town of Chewton, near Melbourne. In total, Ford Australia has sold more than 455,000 Falcon utes, among the most popular being the Falcon XB, XF II, AU II, BA and current FG models. The Australian designed and developed Ford Ranger is also widely sold in more than 180 different countries. For all things Ford call local dealer Bremer Ford on 3816 6700. Mercedes-Benz Design creates surfboard Against the backdrop of the lighthouse at Nazaré in Portugal, one of the most famous surfing locations in the world, Gorden Wagener, Vice President Design Daimler AG, handed over four surfboards to Garrett McNamara. The Hawaiian surfing star and world record holder aims to use the boards, which he has developed in collaboration with Mercedes-Benz, to “ride” the monster waves off the coast at Nazaré. The four surfboards were designed and engineered by McNamara together with designers and engineers from MercedesBenz at the company’s Design Centre in Sindelfingen and subjected there to extreme testing, for example in the wind tunnel. Mercedes-Benz was responsible for the design and McNamara for the shape and weight of the boards. The key quest of the cooperation was to identify the ideal material and the perfect distribution of weight on the board. The boards, which were built in Portugal and are specifically suited to surfing on giant waves, each have a slightly different shape and

Official figures released today show Toyota dealers sold an industryhigh total of 29,846 vehicles in January and February, 1.5 per cent more than for the same period last year. Toyota’s 2014 tally is already more than 11,200 sales ahead of its nearest rival, placing it in line for a 12th consecutive year as Australia’s best-selling automotive brand. Toyota’s four-year sales high has also resulted in its market share improving by 92 basis points to 17.6 per cent this year, compared with the same period last year. The latest figures show Toyota dealers sold 16,200 vehicles last month - the best February since 2010. Toyota’s February sales represent an increase of 1.1 per cent compared with the same month last year and comes on the back of a January year-on-year result that was also improved. Corolla and HiLux were again Toyota’s best-selling vehicles in February with HiLux reversing January’s result to claim top spot by just 15 sales - 3,348 to 3,333. HiLux 4x2 and 4x4 were joined by Toyota’s Camry sedan, 86 sports coupe, LandCruiser 200, HiAce van and HiAce bus in leading their respective sales segments in February. Toyota Australia’s executive director
sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the company’s results so far this year were particularly pleasing in the face of an overall market that has eased slightly. “The Australian new-vehicle market remains strong with seasonally adjusted figures pointing to another full-year result of 1.1 million sales,” Mr Cramb said. “Purchases by business are showing signs of improvement, which is a welcome sign as consumers continue to assess economic signals that suggest neither a surge in sales nor a downturn of any size,” he said. “Toyota’s gains in sales and market share augur well for the year, especially with an all-new Kluger SUV to be launched this month following the February arrival of a new-generation Corolla sedan.” For more information on this and all things Toyota, call local dealer Llewellyns on 3282 2922.
MAS Automotive celebrates 40 years have been tailor-made to McNamara’s weight and height. The joint project, under the name “MBoard”, represents an impressive example of the Mercedes-Benz motto: “The best or nothing”. Surfing legend McNamara tested the boards for the first time from 2 to 13 February in Portugal, showing himself more than satisfied with the result. The cooperation could well be extended to further projects over the course of 2014; for example involving the use of telemetry to measure for the first time the precise speeds achieved by extreme surfers.
