STAR CHAT The show with no name CELEBRITY

It’s Comedy Festival season once again, and coming back to South East Queensland this month is Tom Gleeson, one of the hardest working comics in the country and without doubt, one of the funniest.

“It’s hard to describe your own show. It’s full of stories, I offend occasionally, and there’s no political stuff this time! I’m giving it a rest. I figure with an approval rating of 30% its too easy to poke fun at Tony Abbott. It’s like kicking someone when they’re down.”

For more information and to buy tickets visit www.briscomfest.com.au

Chances are you’ve seen Tom pop up on one of several TV shows over the years, with a long list on his resume including Skithouse, Good News Week, This Week Live, Rove and many more. Tom has played the Brisbane Comedy Festival since it began 8 years ago, and looks forward to a bit of ‘me’ time as the father of a three year old and a newborn. “When I started doing festivals back in 2001 it was the Melbourne Festival and that was it, you’d spend 11 months of the year doing other things. Now, I do six festivals in a row, and when you do a show you want as many people as you can to come and see it so it’s great,” Tom said. “Firstly I’m in Adelaide for five weeks then Brisbane, then Melbourne, then the Perth and Sydney comedy festivals, so it’s a big block of work. “Brisbane Festival for me is a very special time I hold dear in my heart, because my wife and kids come to Adelaide for a few weeks, then I’m in Brisbane for a week and I say to my wife, ‘Look, it’s only six nights, do you really want to go all that way?’ So I love it. I’m on my own, I can wander around, catch up on movies I’ve missed, and meet friends for lunch, then work at night. “My wife and kids treat travelling with me as a holiday, but its starting to get tricky with a three year old now. She’s been here with us for a few days, and just hanging with adults, so she needs some young company. But on

the flipside, she gets all day with mum and dad, and we can go to the beach, so there are positives to the lifestyle.” A popular news site recently asked some of the nation’s top comics what their best or most memorable heckles were over the years, and Tom has a personal favourite. “My favourite heckles change, but one that stands out was some Irishman in Ireland, who I thought was drunk, yelling out… so I was paying him out. Then he yells ‘are you making fun of me cos I have brain damage?’ “ I didn’t know if he was telling the truth or not. If he was, it makes me look bad, and if he wasn’t, everyone thinks he’s telling the truth… and he’s a genius. “I didn’t recover from that. It was 2011, and I pride myself in being able to get out of most situations, so thought I’d work through it. I find the best way to deal with a heckler is to find out why they are doing it. “I tried to get to the bottom of it, and was talking to him for quite a while and then he went quiet. Eventually someone yelled out ‘he’s gone home’, so I spent most of the time talking about someone that wasn’t even there!” Tom said a few years ago that he didn’t want to become a comic who spends all his time talking about his kids, but has found that it is too good a source of material. “You have created a human being from scratch. If you’re a comedian and look at that…

to not think anything is funny about it, maybe you’re not getting into the real stuff. The truth is it takes over your life and for me, becoming a father means that I now feel like I’ve taken the leap into the vast majority of people. I’m now getting in touch with people I went to high school with, as we have that new common ground. A lot of comics are late starters, so when I had kids I felt it gave me something in common with Australia.” Tom’s not giving his new show a name, which is unusual, but he’s at a point now where it doesn’t really matter. “No, there’s no title for this show… I came up with about 20 and I got stressed out. Then it dawned on me that it doesn’t matter. All the shows in Adelaide are alraady sold out and people say to me ‘I saw you in a show’ and they don’t remember the name of it, and the name never reflects the show anyway. “I like doing live stuff either on stage or TV, as you can’t be boring in front of a live crowd, its impossible. If you are boring it slips away very quickly, and it’s the same with TV. Pre-recorded shows are never as good, and I’ve done lots of TV shows because they are just given to me, but when I have to audition for shows I never get them as I say ‘it will be right, when the audience is there it will be right’. When you’re sitting in a room with two guys who are creating a new show, they just assume I’m being unenthusiastic.” Gleeson is in in town later this month, and if you haven’t seen him by now, don’t miss the chance to see one of the best comics around. “It’s hard to describe your own show. It’s full of stories, I offend occasionally, and there’s no political stuff this time! I’m giving it a rest. I figure with an approval rating of 30% its too easy to poke fun at Tony Abbott. It’s like kicking someone when they’re down.”

WHAT’S GOING ON

CITY VIBE 200 movie tickets must be won! Disney’s Cinderella is coming to cinemas on March 26th, and in keeping with the theme of the movie’s message of ‘Have Courage and Be Kind’, we want you to tell us who has been kind to you, and Ipswich Life and Limelight Cinemas will treat them to an afternoon at the movies! We want you to nominate someone who you think deserves an afternoon at the movies to see a special preview screening of Disney’s Cinderella at Limelight Cinemas on Sunday, March 22nd at 2pm. Simply send us their details and tell us why you think they deserve this special treat and we’ll reward them - plus we will have room for you and a guest too! The story of “Cinderella” follows the fortunes of young Ella (Lily James) whose merchant father remarries following the death of her mother. Eager to support her loving father, Ella welcomes her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her daughters Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drisella (Sophie McShera) into the family home. But, when Ella’s father unexpectedly passes away, she finds herself at the mercy of a jealous and cruel new family. Finally relegated to a servant girl covered in ashes, and spitefully renamed Cinderella, Ella could easily begin to lose hope. Then there is the dashing stranger she meets in the woods. Unaware that he is really a

prince, not merely an apprentice at the Palace, Ella finally feels she has met a kindred soul. It appears her fortunes may be about to change when the Palace sends out an open invitation for all maidens to attend a ball, raising Ella’s hopes of once again encountering the charming Kit (Richard Madden). Alas her stepmother forbids her to attend and callously rips apart her dress. But, as in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a kindly beggar woman (Helena Bonham-Carter) steps forward and – armed with a pumpkin and a few mice – changes Cinderella’s life forever. rected by Sir Kenneth Branagh (director of Thor), and starring Downton Abbey’s Lily James, Australian actress Cate Blanchett, , Helena Bonham Carter, Stellan Skarsgard, & Richard Madden, Disney’s Cinderella is the incredible re-telling of the world’s most famous fairy tale and reminds us all that there is magic in kindness.

To win, tell us in 100 words or less who you are nominating to go to the movies and why you think they are kind, and send it along with your contact details and the phone numbers of your nominees (inc. daytime phone numbers) to win@strikepublications.com.au with the code word ‘KINDNESS’ in the subject line. Or post entries to PO Box 124, Ipswich, Qld 4305. T&Cs: Only one entry per household accepted. The winner will receive two tickets. The person who nominates them will receive two tickets. There are 200 movie preview tickets to be won. The tickets are not transferable nor redeemable for cash. Contest closes 18th March

IPSWICH’S PREFERRED SUPPLIER RETAIL STORE 2 Ipswich Life

LA-Z-BOY Gallery now exclusively in Ipswich There’s something exciting happening in Ipswich this weekend, with the opening of the first LA-Z-BOY Gallery in the region at Furniture Court & Beds-R-Us – and there’s the opportunity to win a LA-Z-BOY recliner plus $1500 in in-store vouchers. To celebrate this great addition to Ipswich furniture retailing there’s also great savings, with 20 – 50 per cent off all things LA-Z-BOY. Store owners, David and Tina Holdorf are so excited that they have been able to secure the internationally famous LA-Z-BOY Gallery for Ipswich. “Our journey with LA-Z-BOY dates back 20 years, having stocked an independent LA-ZBOY range, first in our Boonah store and now in our Ipswich store,” David said. “We saw the potential to have the quality and reputation of the LA-Z-BOY range in Ipswich, and we have worked continually to achieve that, culminating in the Ipswich Gallery opening this weekend. “When we first expanded to Ipswich we pushed to become a LA-Z-BOY In-Store Gallery but it’s not something they hand out easily. We have had to prove ourselves on many levels, and now we are so excited to become the home of Ipswich’s exclusive LA-Z-BOY Gallery. “Over the weekend we will also have huge savings across all departments, Lounges, Dining, Bedding, Bedroom – just to help us celebrate.” The whole Ipswich region is covered, with exclusive territory from the bottom of the Toowoomba Range to the west, Toogoolawah to the north west, the Scenic Rim Shire and the Ipswich City Council Region and east to the edge of Brisbane. “We have already had excited customers saying how happy they are, no longer having to go to the city to get the LA-Z-BOY product they desire,” David said.

“We also have service agents based in the local area, so the after sales service is second to none.” Almost everyone has heard of LA-Z-BOY, as the top of the market recliner, but now Ipswich customers will be able to choose from a great range of contemporary style sofas, lounge suites, ottomans and luxury power recliners, along with Nordic Furniture designs from Denmark and, more recently, a range of dining tables, chairs and bedroom furniture. “The great thing about LA-Z-BOY, and what makes us so pleased that we can offer the complete range to our customers, is the brand’s reputation for quality, durability and unbeatable warranties,” David said. “This gives our customers peace of mind that they have invested in the best brand, and while they may never need to call on aftersales service but it’s nice to know it’s there if you need it.” To further promote the LA-Z-BOY range, a new marketing campaign launched last year features Bridie Carter, star of Australian television shows, highlighting that LA-Z-BOY is no longer just ‘Dad’s chair’. David and Tina invite everyone to come into the store over the weekend and join in the celebrations. Grand Opening Details Friday 6th to Sunday 8th of March. Official opening on Saturday. One LA-Z-BOY Recliner to be won by a lucky customer who visits the store over the three days, test drives a LA-Z-BOY and fill out an entry form. $1500 worth of Instore vouchers will also be won over the three days - $500 per day. Make any purchase to go into the draw. The special for the weekend will be 20 – 50% Off all things LA-Z-BOY

‘Sauce Ya Face’ goes global Sometimes a small idea can lead to bigger things, and in the case of Sophia Lonergan, it could end up being something massive as the ‘Sauce Ya Face’ awareness campaign grows every single day. Mandy and Ryan Lonergan of Flinders View are the instigators of the ‘Sauce Yer Face’ campaign which all began when their daughter Sophia was diagnosed with the Sturge-Weber Syndrome, a rare congenital neurological disorder which includes a port wine mark on the face. Mandy and Ryan did a lot of research, and out of the blue were given a chance to attend the biggest Sturge-Weber conference in the world, which is in Chicago in July. “There’s a family in Melbourne who have a daughter with Sturge-Weber, and they won a competition with Qantas to get a million frequent flyer points,” Mandy said. “They wanted to send two other families in the same situation to America using up their prize.

“So I thought while we were there, why not try to get on The Ellen Show and publicly thank them, plus use it as a platform to raise awareness of Sturge-Weber? With 60 million viewers it’s a huge platform to spread the word.” So in that moment the ‘Sophia Meets Ellen’ campaign was born. “We wanted to do something fun that anyone could do, and we came up with the ‘Sauce Ya Face’ idea. The sauce is there to represent Sophia’s birthmark, as I’ve found when we are in public we get lots of comments and stares, so I wanted to turn a negative, into a positive. “Its just a red thing on her face, it doesn’t hurt her, it is what it is,” Mandy said. “Saucing your face is easy to do, and a bit of fun. Now, people

She is the priority here. It’s been a big journey. “I would love to get on Ellen and publicly thank the family for allowing us to go to Chicago, and I 1 21/0 Chamber_ShopIpswich_IpswichLife_vendorads:Layout will be doing my awesome dance moves. We will get there! Watch this space.” You can follow Sophia online at www.facebook. com/ellenmeetssophia *Note: Mandy claims her dancing is awesome, but Ryan isn’t so sure. Ellen can be the judge. recognise her when we are out, and people are constantly coming up and saying hello, so I think the campaign is working. “It’s not contagious, but awareness is, and so far we’ve had Jamie Dunn, Liz Cantor and several other celebrities doing the ‘Sauce Ya Face’. It’s now got bigger than I can keep track of. It started as a few friends, and we loved that support but it has gone beyond that for ‘Saucy Selfies’. We are getting photos from all over the world now.“ “In Australia there is no such thing as a conference, and support is minimal because it is so rare. In Chicago there will be doctors, neurologists and other experts to explain things and it’s the only one of its kind in the world. “She currently has 13 doctors who we see on rotation, including physios, dermatologists, and its growing. It’s a full time job seeing all these specialists, but it’s all about management. “Sophia hasn’t had a seizure for a while so her mediation is working, but we need to stay on top of it and manage her treatment. We are there for three and half weeks at the conference, and we own a business which keeps Ryan busy full time, so I’ve put my work on hold, now going part time, but everything is dependant on Sophia.

Mayoral rivalry takes the cake The nomination of Ipswich as one of the world’s seven smartest communities recently (see last issue of Ipswich Life), has caused quite a stir in Toowoomba, with the local paper giving it front page coverage. While it may be a case of ‘sibling rivalry’ between the two cities, the two Mayors have known each other for many years, and recently put their differences aside at St. Edmunds College, where Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio has two grandsons Hamish and Campbell Owbridge are school captains, and ironically is the same school that Paul Pisasale went to. “I finished here in 1969, and when you get involved in your old school it’s about showing leadership and mentoring,” Mayor Pisasale said. “It’s about having pride in your school, pride in your city and pride in your country. Paul and I have been mates from the day he was elected, and he is as committed and passionate about Toowoomba as I am about Ipswich.” Toowoomba Mayor Paul Antonio had to admit defeat in this instance, when it was revealed his grandsons were studying at an Ipswich school, but brought along some Lamingtons (which originated in Toowoomba)

to show there were no hard feelings between the two cities. “We can learn a lot from Ipswich and Paul has people here believing in themselves,” he said. “Toowoomba is known as an industry hub at the moment, a powerful sector in the economy. We have an airport now, plus we’ve just approved a 13,000 acre solar farm in the western part of the shire. That’s something we are proud of, and like Ipswich, we want things to happen. “There’s a healthy rivalry there, but also lots of respect. But if I can say one thing, it is that the Ipswich mayor would have you believe that being smart is an environmental product, but I’m here to tell you its genetic.” Paul Pisasale, as always, had the final word. “Any person who chooses to send his kids to St. Edmunds is showing superior intelligence.” Above: Mayor Paul Antonio, arm wrestles with Paul Pisasale, with (L-R) Captains Hamish Owbridge, Henry Creamer, Harrison Peucker and Campbell Owbridge with (centre) Principal Chris Leadbetter.

Sports mouthguards protect your teeth At Limestone Dental Group the dentists are passionate about the importance of wearing mouthguards in contact sports, having seen and treated many injuries which could have been prevented by wearing a mouthguard. Sports mouthguards are essential in most contact sports played today with some sporting organisations making their use compulsory. Did you know 31% of sporting injuries result in damage to the teeth, face and head, and 95% of injuries involving teeth result in permanent disfigurement. Unfortunately, the majority of mouthguards are moulded using a very soft material that does not fit properly and can dislodge easily, making them a potential choking hazard. These mouthguards provide a false sense of protection. Mouthguards that you simply boil and bite on are particularly unacceptable. Newer technology allowing mouthguards to be laminated under pressure are now considered the standard for mouth

protection from sports injury by the Dental Health Foundation of Australia. Depending on the type of sport and the player’s age, these mouthguards are constructed of 2-4 layers of ethyvinyl acetate, a tough plastic of varying thickness, each layer is separately heated, adapted and bonded under pressure. Name tags are placed between the layers for easy identification. Get protected — phone Limestone Dental Group on 3281 1466 to arrange for a custommade laminated mouthguard.

Figaro on its way to Ipswich Opera Queensland is bringing musical magic and mayhem to Ipswich on 19 March with The Adventures of Figaro, which mixes the dazzling tunes from Rossini’s much-loved masterpiece The Barber of Seville with cabaret and vaudeville.

Ipswich Civic Centre presents Opera Queensland’s production of The Adventures of Figaro based on Rossini’s The Barber of Seville . Performing version by Lindy Hume and Craig Allister Young. This project is supported by The Playing Queensland Fund and arTour, initiatives of the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland, part of the former Department of Science, Information Technology, Innovation and the Arts. Tickets are available at www.ipswichciviccentre.com.au or at the Box Office in the Ipswich Mall at the I.C.C. Customer Service Centre.

After the success of last year’s “La Bohème”, Ipswich Civic Centre is gearing up for another big turnout for this new production, which is again part of a regional tour by Opera Queensland that stages Opera productions out of the capital cities across the state. This new 90-minute adaptation stars Jason Barry-Smith as Figaro (the very first celebrity hairdresser) and a versatile cast of singers and musicians, while well-known actor Sandro Colarelli makes his opera debut as the frazzled servant Fiorello - our unreliable narrator - amid a number of colourful characters. This special production is designed to fit into small venues, festivals, pop-up spaces and pubs, and is also sung in English. Visiting 13 cities and towns across Queensland, The Adventures of Figaro’s versatile cast of eight play multiple characters and improvise comic scenarios that will see the action being played amid the audience at times, with plenty of surprises along the way. The Barber of Seville is one of the most famous works of all time, and star Jason Barry-Smith said that many people will be surprised how

much of the music they will recognise. “There is so much music in this that people will know, especially the overture. One of the stars of this is the arranger, he’s given the music a different feel with a small ensemble,” Jason said. “The musicians and the singers will make this a ton of fun. This is what this piece is all about, it’s taking a classic piece of art and allowing everyone else in on it. We are rehearsing now, and it’s going to be fantastic. “As this is a totally new piece it will take about three weeks of rehearsal, and the costumes are simply amazing. It will be a really funny, funky, modern show, plus it is being sung in English, not Italian. I sing in English quite a lot, as I always love the immediacy that singing in our own language allows us. “We start in Toowoomba, then the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and then St George. I love taking Opera to the masses, and I can’t wait to get to Ipswich on the 19th March. “It’s extraordinary taking it to people in areas that don’t have opera available to them all the time. It’s so exciting, so much fun and people lap it up.”

We got a huge response to the ‘must see movies of 2015’ article in a recent edition, so we then asked our Facebookers what movies they were the most excited about and Jessie T from Raceview shared her thoughts with us, including how she feels about Chris Hemsworth. Congrats Jessie, a double movie pass is on its way to you. Want to be like Jessie? Send us a top 5 of anything (or see the suggestion below) and you could be our next Top Fiver! 1. The Hunger Games Mockingjay: Part 2 Jennifer Lawrence has brought Katniss to life and has become someone that people can look up to. I’m keen for the grand final for Katniss to kick ass! 2. Avengers Age of Ultron I enjoy the way the Marvel movies have been made for the big screen and a bit of eye candy doesn’t hurt! Chris Hemsworth for example! Yummy. 3. Fast and Furious 7 I just love hot cars (if only I had the money to buy a few!) and I also want to pay tribute to Paul Walker, an absolute legend, in his final movie role. 4. Insurgent Similar to the Hunger Games movies, I’m looking forward to the 2nd Divergent movie to see what Tris faces next. 5. Pitch Perfect 2 The first movie just made me wish I could sing with all the talent! But also the wit throughout the movie is just enough to keep it funny, but not make it corny. An average of 73% of Year 3 students placed in the top two NAPLAN bands across all five tests in 2014, with all students above the national minimum standards. The year-on-year improvement trends were also very prominent across all tests in Year 5 where students at Junior Grammar achieved their best scores in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation over the past seven years. Girls’ Grammar students also made pleasing gains in 2014 with Year 7 students’ results continuing the year-on-year upward trends in writing, grammar, punctuation and, in particular, numeracy. the top two NAPLAN bands across all five tests. According to Principal Dr Peter Britton, the magnitude of the improvements has been very pleasing. “These results are a credit to the hardworking, disciplined students, professional staff and supportive parents of Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School and Ipswich Junior Grammar School,” Dr Britton said. “The School has placed excellence in learning and teaching at the centre of its strategic plan and this goal drives all decision making with high priority placed on teachers striving to excel at learning and teaching by constantly searching for ways to improve learning and teaching at the School. “The School recognizes that there is always room for improvement, however, the 2014 NAPLAN results indicate that our persistent focus on striving for excellence in learning and teaching is working,” he said. This academic success is balanced by more than 50 sporting, cultural, academic and community service co-curricular options to engage a variety of interests and meet the diverse needs of the School’s student community. To support these interests throughout the community, scholarships are offered to talented students in Drama, Sport, Music, Visual Arts and academia. ‘Perfect Wedding’ - Incinerator Theatre’s first play for 2015 The first play of the year at the unique, historic Incinerator Theatre is the hilarious farce “Perfect Wedding”, full of mistaken identities and total confusion throughout. It also contains the rare combination of a riotous comedy and a love story at the same time. Actors and audiences alike will be confronted by an appalling situation — a bridegroom waking up on the morning of this wedding in the bridal suit, with the bride about to arrive to commence dressing for the wedding, and finding a complete stranger in the bed. What’s more she’s an extremely attractive girl. He has no memory of what happened at his stag night the night before. How will he get out of this mess? By the time the bride’s parents and half the hotel staff get involved it is total chaos. Directed by Doug Moses, assisted by Chris

Austin-Greenhill, and talented cast of six bring all the fun of what was to be a perfect wedding to the stage. Twelve community groups are hosting fundraising Theatre Nights for the play and tickets for the public performances on March 13,14, 20 and 21 and the Public Matinee on March 15 are on sale online at www. ipswichlittletheatre.com.au or at the Ipswich Visitor Information Centre, phone 3281 0555. Carnival time at USQ Ipswich The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) Ipswich was abuzz with activity as it celebrated its first Phoenix Carnival recently. There was a carnival atmosphere as people from all ages joined in the festivities which culminated in a fireworks finale over the beautiful grounds. USQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Jan Thomas said the USQ Ipswich Phoenix Carnival was a chance for the University to welcome the community and celebrate the start of the new year of study. “It was an opportunity to celebrate USQ’s presence within the Ipswich community and to acknowledge the relationships and support they have shown us,” Ms Thomas said. Professor Thomas, who was joined by Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale on stage, said the carnival was of great importance to USQ. “The USQ Ipswich Phoenix Carnival is about building pride amongst staff, students, and the wider community,” she said.
“As this is our first carnival in Ipswich, we really wanted locals to know they have something to be proud of in USQ.” USQ journalism graduand Eliza Wheeler emceed the event, during which Triple J favourites Velociraptor performed on stage as well as Australia’s Got Talent contestant Mark Lowndes, Melbourne’s songstress Ali Barter and USQ’s Crystal Coleman and Kent Tonscheck.

“This is such a landmark event for USQ,”

Miss Wheeler said.

“I was very flattered and humbled to be asked to be part of it. This event is quite symbolic. USQ and Ipswich coming together is going to have so many benefits.”

Miss Wheeler, a former Ipswich Girls’ Grammar student, finished her degree at USQ Springfield and has since gained employment as a journalist.

The former UQ Ipswich campus transferred to USQ in January following an agreement between the two universities.

The decision to transfer the campus was motivated by a desire to increase tertiary education opportunities and to reflect the strategic objectives of each university.

Professor Thomas said the opportunity to develop and offer a wide range of degree programs at Ipswich would complement USQ Springfield and allow more students the chance to study for a university qualification. Below: USQ Vice-Chancellor Jan Thomas with USQ journalism graduand Eliza Wheeler

In 2002, the owners received a gold medal for their conservation work in the John Herbert Heritage Awards. George Faircloth was the original owner of Booval House. He contracted William Hancock to construct the two-storey brick home in the late 1850s. In December 1859, Governor and Lady Bowen made their first visit to Ipswich and stopped at Booval House for refreshments and a change of clothing. By the early 1860s, the home was surrounded by cotton when the Ipswich Cotton Company established a plantation. The home changed hands over time with the Ferret Family in residence for many years. Around 1921, Booval House was purchased by the Catholic Church and after standing vacant for several years, it opened in the 1930s as St Gabriel’s Convent for the Sisters of Mercy. With the decline in the number of sisters entering the convent, Booval House was later

sold by the church in 1997. This photograph taken by Lyle Radford in 2010 can be found on the Ipswich Libraries’ Picture Ipswich website. On International Women’s Day each year, we celebrate the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. We renew our attention on those issues where further effort is needed to ensure women’s equality is gained and maintained in all aspects of life. I am delighted to lend my support, once again, to International Women’s Day in 2015 and its theme ‘Make It Happen’. ‘Make it happen’ encourages women to pursue their goals and aspirations. Like so many other parents, this is something my wife Carolyn and I have encouraged our daughters to do. Each day I speak with inspiring women in Ipswich and the Somerset Region who have ‘Made it Happen’. They’ve achieved their goals. They’ve improved their lives and the lives of others. Our communities thrive when women reach their potential in business, government, workplace and in home. Let’s all ‘Make it Happen’.

Alison was born and raised in Ipswich, attending St Mary’s College before going on to studying Optometry at QUT Brisbane. On graduating in 2005, Alison worked for a private practice in Beenleigh for 5 years before taking on the role of Principle Optometrist for The Optical Superstore in Ipswich. “Juggling work life with a young family has been both challenging and rewarding”, says Alison. Working in Ipswich for the past five years has helped build a friendly repore with our diverse and vibrant patient base, many of whom have been clients since the store opened13 years ago. Regular eye examinations are extremely important to ensure the continued health of your eyes, particularly as medical evidence indicates conditions such as glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration, increase with age. Testing for children is recommended before the start of each school year.

Who doesn’t love great customer service? I love my job, and am so proud to be part of a family owned and operated business, who takes customer service and satisfaction seriously. It’s my job to always call you for approval before any extra work is carried out and to explain everything in clear, easy to understand terms. It’s my personal mission to make your experience with our Centres something that you want to tell your friends about. Within our first year of opening in Ipswich we were finalists in two local business awards for Best Customer Service. Having a female friendly approach in our stores is something that sets us apart from our competition. I organised and started our very first FREE ladies information evening last year and it was a huge success. Why not see for yourself by booking in at any three of our locations and experience the MAS difference. You’re never just a number to us, so why not call ours?

Defence ‘Plan Jericho’ aims to transform the Air Force

BEST LINE OF

DEFENCE

A bold plan to create a truly integrated, networked Air Force has been put forward by the Chief of Air Force Air Marshal Geoff Brown. Plan Jericho, released ahead of the Avalon Air Show last week, sets the pathway for a future Air Force that has the most capable air power platforms, advanced technologies and the highest trained Defence personnel. “In the next 10 years, the Royal Australian Air Force will have one of the most advanced aircraft fleets in the world. This will make our Air Force operations fundamentally different,” Air Marshal Brown said. “We cannot be complacent, by thinking that simply having the next generation of aircraft technology, will create an advanced Air Force. The E-7A Wedgetail is already in service, and the F-35A Lightning II, P-8A Poseidon and EA18G Growler are only a few years away. “These aircraft will bring more data and situation awareness than ever before. We need to be able to share this information across aircraft platforms through networking, and enable good decisions without being overwhelmed by the high volumes of data. “We need to work across Defence, to create integration with Army and Navy’s technologies to deliver the best possible options for Government from these advanced aircraft. “We need to transform ourselves into a truly integrated, networked force that can realise the from $35 sqm

potential of this technology, and maintain our position as masters of the air domain. The CAF regards Plan Jericho as the first step in a tranformal sequence focusing on three main themes: harnessing the combat potential of an integrated force; developing an innovative and empowered workforce; and changing the way the RAAF acquires and sustains capability. The creation of an air warfare centre plus development of new operational concepts and tactics and a greater focus on experimentation and testing are regarded as pivotal to this transformation. “The changes we make under Plan Jericho will allow us to maintain our ability to deliver air power for Government, when and where it is needed,” the CAF said. The efforts of Squadron Leader Patricia Bell, Logistics Officer at 82 Wing Headquarters, in leading a small team responsible for the logistics element of planning, mounting and executing the deployment of No 1 Squadron to the Middle East has been recognised with an award of the Air Commander’s Commendation. A detachment of 82 Wing deployed on Operation Okra in September 2014 - the Australian contribution to the international effort to combat the ISIL threat in co-operation with the Iraqi Government. The extremely compressed timeframe saw the unit deploy within seven days of receiving the notice to move. The logistics team consisted of personnel from both 1 and 6 Squadrons, 82 Wing Headquarters and Air Combat and the Electronic Attack System Program Office. The commendation recognises the leadership, guidance and dedication displayed by SQNLDR Bell in ensuring the successful rapid deployment and the subsequent programmed conduct of both enduring nonkinetic and kinetic operations. Deploying a Squadron overseas for exercise ordinarily requires months of planning and coordination, yet SQNLDR Bell displayed excellent knowledge and management skills in the handling of numerous complex and time critical issues during the planning and deployment phase. Air movement plans and cargo aircraft availability being coordinated by a number of agencies was extremely fluid. The constantly changing plan made it extremely difficult for the logistics team to appropriately plan and prioritise strategic movement of equipment and stores. SQNLDR Bell’s F/A-18F Super Hornet knowledge, broader logistics expertise and cool demeanour under pressure allowed her to make the

correct critical decisions on the movement plan without adversely impacting the deployment schedule. Once the aircraft had deployed SQNLDR Bell worked with the external Joint agencies to establish the networks and processes that would be required to sustain the F/A-18F in theatre. Despite the significant demands imposed on SQNLDR Bell’s time and energy to plan, execute and resolve numerous issues to firstly deploy and then bed down a sustainable process for the F/A-18F support in theatre, she also successfully continued to manage the day to day requirements and demands of her position as the 82 Wing Senior Logistics Officer. SQNLDR Bell’s contribution to and leadership of the logistics team was instrumental in the successful deployment of the F/A-18F Super Hornet to the Middle East Region. Her efforts were critical in demonstrating the speed which Air Power can be projected and are in keeping with the finest traditions of the Royal Australian Air Force. Medal for Boeing manager Christopher Gray, a project manager with Boeing Defence Australia has been awarded the Air Commander Australia Commendation for his work with the F/A-18F Super Hornet at RAAF Base Amberley. Mr Chris Gray, Australian Super Hornet Operations and Integration Manager of Boeing Defence Australia, was an integral part of the engineering and technical airworthiness team that managed the deployment of No 1 Squadron to Operation OKRA within seven days of receiving the notice to move. Mr Gray worked collaboratively as part of the wider Air Force, DMO, and Boeing Defence Australia engineering team. His specific contribution however was instrumental in ensuring the aircraft were firstly ready to deploy on schedule and then able to conduct both non-kinetic and kinetic operations within an extremely ambitious timeframe. On notification of the operation Mr Gray took action using his extensive F/A-18F Super Hornet support system knowledge to coordinate brain storming activities to capture all possible requirements and avenues that Boeing Defence Australia could support. DEFENCE

GIVEAWAYS Rescue at 2100 Hours

by Tom Trumble February 1942. The Japanese invasion of Timor has begun and attempts to evacuate a group of 29 Australian airmen, charged with keeping an airfield operational until the last moment, are thwarted. Under the leadership of Bryan Rofe, a 24-year-old meteorological officer, the airmen make for remote jungle along the northwest coast. All attempts to rescue the group fail. Malaria-ravaged and starving, these men are taken to the limits of their endurance for 58 days. When a 300-strong Japanese patrol is sent to hunt them down all hope seems lost, until they receive a strange signal from sea - an American submarine has been dispatched to their position. With the Japanese closing in, only courage will keep them alive. (Penquin)

Descent Into Hell

By Peter Brune Descent into Hell is a scrupulously researched and ground-breaking account of one of the most traumatic calamities in Australian history — the Malayan Campaign, the fall of Singapore and the subsequent horrors of the Thai-Burma Railway. Unpicking the myths and legends of the war, Peter Brune goes to the heart of the Australian experience. He describes the shambolic planning by the British in Singapore and the failures and incompetence of some of the Australian command. Here are stories of the war’s many heroes and villains: of officers who looked after their men and optimised their chances of survival, and others who looked after

themselves at their men’s expense; the heroes of battle who became ineffectual and lost in the camps and on the Railway, and the least liked and least respected battlefield officers who came to be great leaders.

WAR: What is it good for?

By Ian Morris War is one of the greatest human evils. It has ruined livelihoods, provoked unspeakable atrocities and left countless millions dead. It has caused economic chaos and widespread deprivation. And the misery it causes poisons foreign policy for future generations. But, argues bestselling historian Ian Morris, in the very long term, war has in fact been a good thing. In his trademark style combining interdisciplinary insights, scientific methods and fascinating stories, Morris shows that, paradoxically, war is the only human invention that has allowed us to construct peaceful societies. Without war, we would never have built the huge nation-states. (Allen&Unwin

Motorcycle riders invited to join ride on May 3 Motorcycle riders across the Ipswich region are invited to join in a new event designed to raise awareness of the issue of domestic and family violence. The Ulysses Club’s ‘Ride for Awareness of Domestic and Family Violence’ will be held at Brothers Ipswich, Sunday May 3. The inaugural ride is being organised by the Ipswich Branch of the Ulysses Club Incorporated to coincide with the last day of the 2015 Ipswich Festival. Cr Bruce Casos said the Club hoped to attract more than 300 participants. “The club plan to make the Ride an annual event and are looking to grow it along the same lines as the Ipswich Annual Toy Run which started in 1996 with 30 motorcycles and has grown to 640 motorcycles in 2014. “The club is passionate about providing awareness of domestic and family violence in the community and believe the Ride is a unique way of promoting a clear message of no tolerance. “The event will form part of the 2015 Domestic and Family Violence Prevention

Month activities held in May each year.” The ride is also supported by the Domestic Violence Action Centre, the Ipswich Says No To Violence Committee co-ordinated by council, Ipswich Police and the SEQ Branches of the Ulysses Club Inc as well as other social motorcycle clubs and individual riders. The event is being promoted as a family activity for all community members to attend and will include information stalls from various regional community organisations as well as food and drink stalls. Entertainment will include a band, free face painting, jumping castle and a ‘Show ‘n Shine’ for the motorcycles where the general public can vote for their choices. Further information and registration is available online from the club at www. ipswichulysses.com or by contacting Amanda on 0413 420 970. For persons who are experiencing Domestic or Family Violence support is available through Domestic Violence Action Centre (formerly Ipswich Women’s Centre Against Domestic Violence) on 3816 3000.

*First ratings indicate the 87th Annual Academy Awards fell 14% in total viewers in the US this year as it drew 34.6 million viewers. Last year’s Ellen Degeneres-hosted show garnered 43.7 million total viewers. In the 18-49 demographic this year’s ceremony also saw a decrease, going from 12.1 rating in 2014 to a 10.3. If these

*Jason Biggs, who played Larry Bloom in the first two seasons of Netflix’s hit series Orange Is the New Black, will not appear in the upcoming third season, his rep confirmed. “Larry will not be in Season 3. But there’s always a possibility he can come back,” Biggs told the New York Daily News, who first reported the story. Larry is a journalist who attempted to use his fiancée, Piper’s (Taylor Schilling), incarceration for good use, trying to expose financial fraud in Litchfield with Piper’s help on the inside. But his article, and their relationship, fell apart. Biggs was a series regular in the first two seasons of Orange Is the New Black, but he was not exactly a fan favorite.

*‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ has been topping the charts in both the US and UK however rumours are flying that Jamie Dornan might be quitting the sequels. Jamie, who plays Christian Grey in the film wants to pull out of his contractual obligations for the next two movies. Jamie’s actress wife, Amelia Warner, is reportedly unhappy with the explicit sex scenes in the film and the actor himself has been upset over the poor reviews. A source revealed to NW Magazine Jamie “tried to assure Amelia nothing would change but women all over the world now lust after him. She hasn’t seen the film and I don’t think she will to be honest.” The person also claimed that Jamie didn’t click with co-star Dakota Johnson saying, “Jamie does not think his performance was bad instead he blames Dakota and says it wasn’t possible to have chemistry with her.” There have been reports that director Sam Taylor-Johnson is also bowing out of the franchise after clashing with author EL James. numbers hold in this ballpark, the 2015 Oscars will be the lowest rated since 2008, which saw final numbers of 31.8 million viewers. Talking Wine WITH TIM AT THE PRINCE ALFRED HOTEL

Nose Cone Art was a popular art form in the 1930’s and 1940’s particularly as featured on the Liberator Planes. One of the main themes of Nose Cone Art was beautiful women as they were a reminder for the pilots missing their wives and girlfriends back home. Keith Johnston was a pilot in the Second World War and is the father of one of the founders of the Wallace Lane Wine Co and Liberator Wines. Liberator Wines restores the art of Pistol Packin’ Momma to share the joy she brought. Pistol Packin’ Momma Red is a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot grapes. The reason this blend works so well is that the two varieties compliment each other allowing a fuller flavoured wine with an all round mouth feel. This approachable, full-flavoured wine derives from fruit sourced from various dry and irrigated vineyards around Orange in New South Wales. This wine has a tightly woven, complex and elegant nose with prominent notes of red berries, and blackcurrant intertwined with subtle hints of cinnamon and vanilla. The soft and velvety merlot combined with the more powerful cabernet sauvignon grapes produces a luscious red wine.

The palate arrives savoury, yet fruit filled, with succulent and luscious blackcurrant and red berry and bright acidity. It builds with wonderful stony, but sinewy, fine tannins and finishes with intriguing earth notes of native dried twigs. Pistol Packin’ Momma Red is the perfect accompaniment to the two newest additions to the Char’d Steakhouse menu — Beef Brisket slow cooked with red wine, mushrooms and thyme and our Slow Roasted Lamb Shoulder infused with rosemary and garlic — both which are available right now. Cheers! Tim

MONEY & PROPERTY

BEHIND THE

MATTERS

WHEEL

Smart refinancing

All-new Hyundai

BY MARK BOURIS The ongoing reduction in interest rates is a boost to refinancing. According to research from finder.com.au, 35 per cent of all owneroccupied home loans financed each month are now refinanced, with the ratio expected to increase this year Refinancing is the replacing of a home loan with a new one, over the same asset, and it is done by three groups: those who want a cheaper or better home loan; those who want to retire consumer debt; and those who want to use equity in their property to fund an investment property or a renovation. The first group has real opportunities right now. If you got a mortgage seven or eight years ago, your once competitive loan could now be in the middle of the pack: you could be paying 5.4 per cent, while the market-best variable rates have fallen to around 4.4 per cent or lower. On a $400,000, 25-year loan, the people with 5.4 per cent mortgages are paying around $230 more per month than those with a 4.4 per cent mortgage. It isn’t just interest rates that trigger refinancing. Your original loan may have lacked features, such as an offset account or line of credit – features that help your wealth strategy. Consolidation of consumer debt is also worth looking at. The cost of store finance and credit card debt has not really fallen in line with mortgages, and if the value of your property has risen in the past few years, it’s possible to refinance to a larger loan and release cash to

pay-off consumer debt. The basic equation is that you use the mortgage at 4.4 per cent, to eliminate debt that’s costing you 18 per cent. This can be a massive saving for a household. For wealth-building, refinancing is useful for funding renovations and further property purchases. Let’s say you bought a property for $500,000, with a $400,000 loan. Now the loan is down to $300,000 and the property is worth $600,000. If a lender is prepared to write a home loan to 80 per cent loan valuation ratio (LVR) on your property, the new loan of $480,000 pays-out the original $300,000 and leaves you with $180,000 to assist in the purchase an investment property. This is how extra repayments into the mortgage, and buying well, can increase your opportunities. Refinancing is now one-third of the owneroccupier mortgage market, so it’s popular. But I’d suggest some warnings: every time you use refinancing to release cash, you are increasing your debt. Be aware of this and know your affordability equation. Secondly, refinancing should be used for a wealth strategy such as reducing expensive debt or buying/building appreciating assets. You’re a long time repaying a mortgage so make sure it counts for something. A huge hit since release in the Australian market, the Tuscon is back and better than ever!

The new Tucson will be of high importance to Hyundai’s business, as the C-SUV segment accounted for 22% of sales in 2014. In Australia, the current ix35 model is the second-biggest selling Hyundai after the i30. The front of the All-New Tucson is dominated by the Hyundai signature hexagonal front grille, which connects with the LED headlamps to create a distinctive identity. A wing-shaped appearance to the front bumper, which incorporates the LED daytime running lights, gives the car a unique style and provides a visual reference for the car’s wide track. Refined interior combines elegance with ergonomics for a sensuous experience
As well as introducing new soft-touch, highquality materials across the cabin surfaces, the interior has undergone extensive ergonomic testing to ensure ease of use and a pleasant and sensuous experience. The modern simplicity of the centre console is underlined by its horizontal orientation, and for the European market there is the option

of an elegant Wine Red leather to bring added sophistication to the refined cabin ambience. Generous space from efficient packaging
the Tucson is built on a completely new platform that endows this C-SUV with generous interior dimensions. Clever packaging means that there is an excellent exterior-to-interior dimension ratio, optimising the space that is afforded to passengers and luggage. Comfortable and airy inside, it also delivers a substantial 513 litres of luggage capacity with all the seats up. Hyundai Motor Company Australia also plans to introduce Apple CarPlay and Android Auto across the Tucson range, the first Hyundai to see the technology – this will mean that every new Tucson will be navigation-capable and will use Siri or Google Voice for its interface. Full Australian vehicle specifications will be confirmed closer to the on-sale date in the third quarter of 2015.

Nissan Sells 150,000 X-TRAILs in Australia Nissan has sold its 150,000th X-TRAIL in Australia and, to celebrate, Nissan Australia’s Managing Director and CEO, Richard Emery, has surprised one lucky buyer. The milestone was reached when sales figures from the month of November 2014 were tallied, revealing that the 150,000th X-TRAIL had been sold in Australia, thirteen years to the month since the Australian release of the first-generation X-TRAIL in 2001. To mark the occasion, Nissan randomly selected an X-TRAIL buyer from November’s sales tally and gave them a pleasant surprise. The lucky recipients: the Adair family from Darley in Victoria. The Adairs decided a white Nissan X-TRAIL ST-L was the perfect family car. With two young children, it met all of their needs and, last November, they took delivery of their new car at Western Nissan in Caroline Springs, Victoria. Recently, they received a telephone call from Richard, Western Nissan’s new Sales Cadet. After asking if the Adairs would be happy to participate in a Facebook video to celebrate the sale of the 150,000th Nissan X-TRAIL in Australia, Richard arranged to use their car at the dealership for the filming. At the conclusion of the shoot he kindly drove Mrs Adair from her home to Western Nissan to collect her car. Mrs Adair arrived at the dealership to find her X-TRAIL not in the car park but in the showroom and adorned with 200 red balloons. Greeting her was a camera crew and a huge round of applause

from the entire dealership team. She was also met with a confession from Richard the Sales Trainee, who was really Richard Emery, the Managing Director and CEO of Nissan Australia, and she received the exciting news that, in celebration of Nissan’s sales milestone with the X-TRAIL, her car was free of charge. “I couldn’t wait to tell her the news,” Richard said. “Both of us were thrilled. To mark this important occasion for Nissan my team and I wanted to make a customer’s day in the best possible way. What better way to do this than to give away an X-TRAIL to a fortunate owner?” he said. “More than 150,000 Nissan X-TRAIL SUVs have found a home in Australian driveways and this is Nissan’s way of saying ‘thank you’ for such a great expression of support for this popular model.”

Volkswagen launches new Touareg Range Volkswagen’s award-winning Touareg continues to build on its strengths in the premium SUV segment with the announcement of a newly revised line-up. The simplified model range embodies the best of both worlds: a luxurious touring saloon and fully capable off-road SUV. Standard features across the range now include: Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, 4MOTION permanent all-wheel drive and RNS850 satellite navigation system. A refreshed, sharper look for the Touareg has been achieved both inside and out.
