Breakfast TV Wars hot up The battle for your attention each morning just got bigger, with a new player in the morning television lineup - in the form of Network Ten’s new ‘Wake Up’ program. Whether it’s the advertising dollars, the personalities, or the ratings, the commercial networks want your attention while you eat your cornflakes from Monday to Friday. With 7’s ‘Sunrise’ and 9’s ‘Today’ locked in a battle for years over who reigns supreme, there’s a new player entering the ‘Breakfast War’, in the shape of Ten’s ‘Wake Up’ which began this week. Three of the stars of the show, Natarsha Belling (Tarsh), Natasha Exelby (Tash) and James Matheson (Matho) dropped into the Ipswich Life offices recently on a promotional tour for ‘Wake Up’ and gave us the lowdown on what their thoughts were about about state of Breakfast TV, and why the network is investing so much into this new show. To most of us getting up at 3am would be a nightmare come true, but the team at Wake Up are looking forward to it. “We think we have to get up at about 3.30, but Matho says there is a big difference between 3.30 and 4am apparently,” Tash said. “I’m not concerned about the early starts. Working hours and juggling life is a struggle no matter what hours you do.

“We’ve been up at 3am every day on this tour and I feel fine, I’m really enjoying it. It gives me a perfect excuse to have a nana nap now and not feel guilty which will let me sit up a bit later. I want to be on top of the news overnight and soak it up before I go to bed so I’m up to speed on everything.” Belling too is looking forward to the early starts after years on the late night news shift. “I’m looking forward to the hours, as its very family friendly,” she said. “I’ve been sleep deprived for eight years with work and two boys. This way my day will be done and dusted by lunchtime and I can be there to pick the boys up from school and still be a mum.” In a timeslot dominated by live crosses, whacky weather, showbiz gossip and non stop cross promotions for shows on the same network (ie: X-Factor & The Voice), should we expect ‘Wake Up’ to be any different? “With the TV landscape changing so much, everything is based on being an instant success.” Tarsh said. “If it doesn’t rate well straight away a show is moved, but we realise, and the network too, that it could take a couple of years for this show to find its feet.

“We don’t have the pressure on us of being an overnight success. For us its about being focused and running a marathon, not a sprint.” Tash added: “It has to be about what the viewer wants, not what a network wants. Mayor Pisasale put it in perspective to us today, he said he’s never focussed on his opponents, he just worries about what he does, and we are taking that same attitude, we are building a show from scratch. People are telling us what they want to see.” As James adds, ratings are the nature of TV, but it is also part of the edge they have over their competitors. “You are going to have stars from the network promoting other shows, you always do, but I personally think people are sick of that. People on a show need to be interesting topically, they can’t be there just for the sake of it. “Having ‘Sunrise’ and ‘Today’ constantly tyring to outdo each other is our big advantage, they have been going so long they are scared of taking any risks. They have their audience and they don’t want them to tinker with their format and make big changes.”

Local MP to push for bridge over Colleges Crossing State Member for Ipswich West Sean Choat is driving the push for a bridge across Colleges Crossing, which joins Ipswich north with Karana Downs - flood mitigation infrastructure that is considered by most users as being decades overdue. With the crossing and parklands, probably the most popular in Ipswich, being devasated twice by floods in three years, the closure has prompted residents of Mt. Crosby and Karana Downs to wonder what it has to take to get a better crossing built. “For the type of traffic corridor we have, what’s there now is just not appropriate,” Mr Choat told Ipswich Life. “We took up a petition, which got over 1500 signatures, and called for a planning phase for a better crossing, but I’m realistic. The reality is that petitions don’t get work done, but they show a desire to get things under way. “I think this is a strategic corridor, and needs attention. It’s high time we had a crossing that can withstand the water releases that are going to be more common from the dam now that its going to be managed differently. When that happens, why are we closing a major transport corridor and replacing it with a one lane road over a weir? Its 2013!“ The road was totally covered by water in the last two flood events, and it is inevitable that the road will go underwater again. It is hoped that the State Government can find the money to raise the road by at least five metres so that residents in Karana Downs and Karalee can still travel between Mt. Crosby and Ipswich. “We are going to start working out what the solution should be and I want to know when it’s going to happen, it’s as simple as that. “My view of the crossing is that people say it

will cost so much money, but it’s more about connectivity with the community, and I believe we just need something to raise the road five or six metres. “Nobody wants to use the back road over the weir which is being sealed, however its still one lane. “I accept the government is hard up for cash, but we should be planning for this, and the area is growing fast enough to justify it.” Colleges Crossing, one of the most popular parks in the area, has undergone extensive renovations following the 2011 floods, only to see all the money washed away in 2013, and today, half of the park is still closed to the public with plans underway to make many of the structures ‘flood proof’. Spending a bit more to fix the road too, according to Mr Choat makes sense. “The figures bandied around are between twenty to thirty million dollars, but that might be a throwaway figure, we just don’t know. What’s the best solution, and how much is it going to cost? “The funding spent at this park already has been around thirteen million dollars, thanks to the NDRRA and Ipswich City Council, and a lot of that was washed away in the last floods. If you are going to invest that kind of money in a park, why can’t we invest a bit more money in a bridge? “It’s a state traffic corridor, so I see this as a state responsibility. At the end of the day, we

should be focussing on the road. It’s not about building a massive bridge. In the future maybe, yes. With growth in Karalee and Anstead, perhaps in thirty years, but now, we just need something better.” Captions: MP Sean Choat overlooks the closed section of Colleges Crossing Below: The road at Colleges Crossing which is at the mercy of rising floodwaters.

A WORD FROM THE

EDITOR Social media is something that has gown fast with television in the last year or so, particularly with interactions from viewers. ‘Wake Up’ is taking this to another level. “Research shows that the majority of women between 30 and 50 check their Facebook before they do anything else in the morning,” Tarsh said. “But you can never underestimate the power of live TV and unfolding stories as they happen. “We actually have four social media producers on this show, so we can gauge what people think, but at the same time not everyone uses social media so we still keep that in mind.” As Tash continued: “You can be entertaining and informative at the same time. It can be done. I personally don’t view Twitter feeds on the bottom of the screen on live shows as a necessary evil, but if someone is able to Tweet me after seeing me on TV and tell me what they think, I can directly communicate with the audience. “At the end of the day we are here to serve. Normally in a café if you don’t like the coffee or food, you can tell the manager about it straight away. You can’t do that in TV, but social media allows you to have that connectivity.” Matheson, already a veteran of live TV, thinks that ‘Wake Up’ will be a welcome change for viewers, and he personally couldn’t wait to start. “I think the attitude of the network is different to ‘Wake Up’, it really is. There is so much positive energy about the show, I’m

seeing a real buzz about it. “I don’t mind the early starts, I’m a bit of a homebody, I just love hanging out at home with my family. So I now have the perfect excuse to not go out. I might get invited to a launch or a premiere and I can now legitimately say ‘Sorry, gotta be up early…’

Can you believe the countdown to Christmas is already on? I still have some Easter Eggs in the fridge! Well, in my defence, you can only get Cadbury Creme Eggs for a limited time so I have to stock up.......*cough*. In this issue we have a great Christmas gift guide from some of our advertisers with some great ideas for gifts, plus we spent some time with the stars of Ten’s new early morning show ‘Wake Up!’ (left) which is taking on the likes of ‘Sunrise’ and ‘Today’, a tough market for sure. We’ve got our usual giveaways, including books, defence books and even a heap of CD’s from local Ipswich band ‘Crashing Tomorrow’. We’ve got all the glamour from the Kitsch in the Swich event recently, plus all the good news from around Ipswich. We like to think that Ipswich Life is your ‘Positive Alternative’ and hope that the magazine has something for everyone in Ipswich. If not, email me and let me know what you love or hate about the mag, because we LISTEN to our readers. After all, you are all part of Ipswich, so let your voice be heard loud and proud! Ipswich Poetry Fest a huge success

Mayor’s Musings WITH MAYOR PAUL PISASALE

One of the best things about Christmas in Ipswich is our popular City of Ipswich Christmas Lights competition and entries are now open. Help make Ipswich sparkle by dusting off the fairy lights and joining in the Christmas spirit with your own festive lights display for the chance to win a share in over $5000 cash. Entry is free and entrants are judged according to artistic, visual and creative elements across nine different categories including City Wide, Best Residential, Best Rural, Best Business, Best Our Street, Best Nativity Scene, Best Recycled Material Display, Best First Time Entrant and Best Tree. Entrants are automatically entered into the City Wide category but you can also enter into any additional two categories. Christmas light displays bring so much joy to families and children of all ages and every year it is exciting to see what new and exciting things entrants come up with. Entries close November 15 and judging will be on Monday, December 2. Winners will be announced on December 18. For more information visit council’s website www.ipswich.qld.gov.au. While on the topic of Christmas and the festive season, it is a good time to spare a thought for those less fortunate and think about how you can offer help. Our entire city was shown immeasurable generosity from every day people from across the country when we were affected by natural disaster and it would be fantastic to see that generous spirit passed on. Sometimes just a small donation is all it takes to change the life of someone in need. There are so many charities that put in a tremendous effort around Christmas time helping those who may not be able to afford basic food, buy a gift for their children or even put a roof over their head. The greatest gift you can give this Christmas is one of charity, to help those who need it most.

Poetry enthusiasts from all over Australia and overseas have been named among the winners of the 2013 Ipswich Poetry Feast. Ipswich Poetry Feast Committee Chairperson and Ipswich City Council Tourism and Libraries Committee Chairperson Councillor David Pahlke said the winners of the 11th annual competition were unveiled at a special presentation at the Metro Hotel Ipswich International. The winners shared in a total prize pool of more than $7800. Cr Pahlke said a total of 1193 entries had been received for the competition this year, an increase of 175 entries on last year’s event. “We received some wonderful entries this year. Each year the entries are judged by a number of experienced regional and professional poets and educators and this tradition has continued. We want to sincerely thank our judges – Isabelle Kearsley, Josh Donellan, David Stavanger, Noel Stallard and Yvnes Sanz - for the hard work they put into selecting our winners. Cr Pahlke said the strongest individual category was the 8 to 10 years section with 267 entries followed by 205 entries in the open – other category.” Cr Pahlke said entries for the competition were received predominantly from throughout Queensland, especially the Ipswich region. “However, we have also received entries from around Australia and attracted 25 overseas entries this year .“In fact, our bush poetry section has been won this year by international entrant Catherine Lee from Thailand.” Students picked up a total of eight prizes in this year’s competition. “Students Christine Collier, Siobhan Deacon and Serena Green took out the first three places in the category with a further four of their fellow students also receiving highly commended awards in the same category. “One of the students Ellie Burton also received the Ipswich Poetry Feast encouragement award in the 15 to 17 years category for her poem Black Coffee for Breakfast?” The open encouragement award was presented to Raceview resident Melanie Gilchrist for her poem My Dad is an Alcoholic. “Congratulations go to each of the winners of this year’s competition who have produced some really interesting poems.” Brenda Joy has been a prolific winner over a number of years and in 2007 she won the

Chairperson’s Special Mention Award (open age) for her poem Australian Free. Known as Darling of the Outback, Brenda was last year’s Australian Written Bush Poetry champion and gained the confidence to pursue her love of poetry writing after winning her first ever prize in the Ipswich Poetry Feast competition. Cr Pahlke said he also wanted to congratulate Victorian entrant David Campbell on his third placing in the open other category. Another regular winner who is back in 2013 is Ashfield resident John Egan who has won first place in the open other section for Slow Train Coming. “All entries remain anonymous to the judges so this is a marvellous feat and a reflection on his talent.” Cr Pahlke said he also wanted to make a special mention of local poet Julie Lynch. “Julie has scored another second place win in the local category which is wonderful to see. Cr Pahlke said the school winner was Ipswich Grammar School (IGS). The winning entries for 2013 are now available to read on the Ipswich Poetry Feast website at www. ipswichpoetryfeast. com.au Caption: 1st Place winner in the 5-7 category, Mya Smith, and (below) Cr David Pahlke with Melanie Gilchrist.

Jacaranda Festival Last weekend I attended and held an information stall at the Goodna Jacaranda Festival. This is something I have been doing, along with my good friend, Federal Member for Oxley, Bernie Ripoll, for the past decade. I have no doubt that for University students in the area the Festival heralds end of year exams and all the associated stresses, however for thousands of residents and community groups, the Goodna Jacaranda Festival represents a time of fellowship, friendship and families. This year’s Festival featured food, wine, music, dancing, fundraising and fireworks and was once again a wonderful showcase of all that is good about our community. Like the Riverview Multicultural Festival which I attended in September, the Goodna Jacaranda Festival shows us that it is people and community, not money or material possessions that are crucial to our happiness and to our quality of life. The Goodna Jacaranda Festival has been running in its current form since 1980. Major sponsors are Goodna Services Club and Ipswich City Council. The Queensland Times, River 94.9 and Telstra shop Redbank Plains are amongst numerous other local sponsors involved with this annual event. No Festival comes together without the strong commitment and hard work from individuals – often just a handful. These individuals, who form organising committees, are the unpaid facilitators that help to create community and need to be acknowledged and thanked. Tens of thousands of people attend the event every year but if you weren’t one of them, make sure you get there next year. Warm Regards, Shayne Neumann, MP

Audio Tour wins award An audio tour of Queens Park has taken out a Gold award in the Governor’s Heritage Award category at the National Trust Queensland Heritage Awards. Ipswich City Council Planning and Development Committee Chairperson, Councillor Paul Tully said the award was validation of council’s efforts to preserve local heritage for the community in new and exciting ways. “This audio tour is a great way to use the latest technology to explore and uncover hidden treasures in Queens Park,” Cr Tully said. “Dating back to 1863, Queens Park is one of Queensland’s oldest and home to a wide range of interesting historical features. “This tour details the park’s history and uncovers 20 of the famous regionally significant landmarks dotted across this park in a selfpaced audio guide. “It is totally free of charge to download to your smartphone or you can hire a digital mp3 player from the Ipswich Visitor Information Centre or Queens Park Café for a minimal fee.” This tour is part of the Ipswich Heritage Trails program. For more than a decade the Ipswich Heritage Trails program has been bringing Ipswich’s history to

life by providing residents and visitors with printed guides to local historical landmarks and sites of significant events from Ipswich’s vibrant past. “Ipswich takes enormous pride in being one of Australia’s oldest and most historically significant cities,” Cr Tully said. “This audio tour has been a hit with the community and it is a huge honour that it has been recognised with this award.”

PERFECT PEOPLE PHOTOS Innovative fun photo shoots, creative ideas and traditional concepts are the hallmarks of Angelic Studio - creating the ultimate in professional photography that captures the moments everyone wants to celebrate and remember. Angela from Angelic Studio says that her clients want photography that is is individual, not run-of-the-mill mass produced pictures – imagery that is emotive, capitvating and having a unique style created just for them. Of course, the highest quality and personalised service is guaranteed, but it’s the engagement with the client, the creative and professional approach to the assignment that stands Angelic Studio apart. “I strive to create that special moment, capture it, and present it in a unique style that my clients absolutely love,” Angela said. “We create many forms of imagery, from captivating wall art to emotive albums designed to keep memories fresh and celebrated for years to come. “I guess it’s my outgoing, sometimes zany personality that creates a sense of fun and brings people out, allowing photo shoots that are relaxed, fun and most importantly portray the moment. “People really appreciate my being part of the celebration, engaging with them, and capturing images unique to their special day. People bounce off my personality, which makes for easy going and relaxed photographic sessions.” Angela says her approach is more of a boutique style, aimed primarily at capturing the intimacy of the couple or that special look from the individual, rather than the standard ‘look at the camera’ approach. “Most people ‘find’ me, having seen my work, so the majority of my work comes from referrals from people who have been really happy with their pictures,” Angela said. After the shoot is over Angela gets into intensive post-production work to enhance the images: smoothing out skin rendition, removing anything distracting in the backgrounds, and applying appropriate tone to the images. 4 IPSWICHLIFE

This attention to detail and application of a special look is central to the boutique style that Angela is seeking for each client. “Even though I have a large studio, I’m basically catering for each individual couple so that each wedding is unique to me, and I strive to go to the next level every single time. “That’s one of the biggest things: they come to me because of my style, confident that I will produce imagery that is specifically for them alone. “They’re not going to get just a bunch of colour photos; they will get all my different tonings and textures that make the difference between an ordinary result and an exceptional one. “ I also finish off my work perfectly, and give the images a special look that the client wants. This may be a sun-kissed look, or an antique or vintage tone. “People now recognise my work, and many say that when they get married they want me to do the photography, so I have developed a bit of a following locally.” Portraiture is also a strong pursuit of Angelic Studio, with most shoots on location in and

around Ipswich. “I always encourage people to go out into Ipswich for a photo shoot where there are interesting backgrounds, except for new-born babies where I use the studio confines, with controlled environment and temperature, etc,” Angela said. “Location shoots allow great backgrounds, artistic lighting and textures – and people want candid style photography: families interacting with each other and capturing that natural feel to the family, couples having a moment together and capturing that moment. I avoid that posed, stiff look by creating an enjoyable environment for the shoot. “And being out in Ipswich is great, in the cool alleyways, the red wall in Limestone Street, St Paul’s Church, other interesting backdrops.” Angela also does commercial work, focusing on studio setups, on-location work-related assignments and the like. It’s certainly an all-round professional photographic service offered by Angelic Studio. For more information check out their website at www.angelicstudio.com.au or call Angela on 3496 1192.

Mayor scores as Community Champion Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale has been recognised as a community champion of master planned communities, job creation, protection of the environment and advocate for education. The Elected Official Award was given by Life Sciences Queensland, an industryled organisation which works closely with government and industry to provide leadership and growth opportunities. “Life Sciences Queensland is dedicated to improving the quality of life in the community,” Cr Pisasale said. “This award is more than an award. It confirms we are on the right track by encouraging sustainable growth in master planned communities such as Springfield and Ripley Valley. “Ipswich’s current population of 180,000 is predicted to increase to almost 462,000 by 2031. “We are creating jobs close to where people live in 14 business and industry parks. The latest unemployment rate of 5.7% confirms Ipswich is in a strong position as a job generator. “We are going from strength to strength with

education. This is highlighted with our two universities. “Ipswich is also a leader in protecting the environment. The city’s Enviroplan program is responsible for preserving 5,500 hectares of natural bushland for future generations. “The hard work of the last 10-15 years is paying off with the support of business, community and sporting groups and volunteers. “I feel everyone is doing their bit to build pride in our city,” Cr Pisasale said.

Springfield community petitions for lagoon at Robelle Parklands

Handy Travel Hints…. with Sharon Jones - Managing Director, JETSET Ipswich

Why I choose to cruise Cruising really is the perfect way to travel the world, as it combines the best of travel advantages. What other holiday can offer you an all inclusive holiday with the pleasure of multiple destinations, spectacular and beautiful scenic cruising, plenty of shore excursions and onboard activities to keep you busy? There’s also an increasing awareness among Australian holidaymakers about the tremendous value of cruising and the wide range of cruise holidays available, from relaxing river cruises to fun family breaks and adventurous expedition voyages. Australians have enjoyed the growing number of itineraries and ships on offer from our Australian ports. The most popular destination for Australian passengers was the South Pacific but with a strong Aussie Dollar people are being encouraged to cruise overseas. Questions that you should ask when considering a cruise holiday 1. Do I want the convenience of cruising from my home port? 2. What length of holiday am I looking for? 3. How big is the ship?

4. What dining options are onboard? 5. What destinations can I go to and explore? 6. What is there to do at sea days? 7. What is my budget? Cruising from Brisbane, in 2014 we will have two P&O ships Pacific Dawn which can accommodate 2020 passengers & Pacific Jewel 1909 passengers. Robyn, Hannah and myself enjoy cruising and have had the luxury of being aboard many cruise ships… these include Pacific Dawn, Voyager of the Seas, Sun & Dawn Princess, Carnival Spirit, Radiance of the Seas, Celebrity Century & Celebrity Solstice, HAL Zaandam, Scenic Diamond & Scenic Crystal and many more. Come and speak to us about this wonderful holiday experience. Call us anytime on 3812 9888, or email Ipswich@jetset.com.au

More than 750 people have signed a petition organised by The Greater Springfield Chamber of Commerce asking the Ipswich City Council to work towards delivering a swimming lagoon and beach as part of Stage 2 of Robelle Domain Parklands. Chamber President Ralph Breaden said that the community is passionate about the provision of a lagoon as part of the expansion of the Parklands. “This is a unique opportunity for the Council to provide an iconic parkland facility that would deliver substantial economic and social benefits to the residents and rate payers of the City of Ipswich. “This opportunity should not be lost to the community and the City of Ipswich,” Mr Breaden said. “We are concerned that if a ‘reduced’ park is built, we will lose the opportunity to have a major community icon like this in the Ipswich region. The full Lagoon option would also serve as a major catalyst for businesses to invest, and raises the prospect of the council attracting more investment and more rates, to support the park’s ongoing costs. “We don’t want to go to Southbank; it would be nice to have what they have here – a lagoon and beach here so that it becomes a major drawcard for the area, and something for the whole of Ipswich to share.” Mr Breaden said that Springfield regards itself as a gateway to Ipswich because it is closer geographically to the western suburbs of Brisbane. “The Council are presently working through the cost implications of the extensions to the Parklands, and we understand there’s a significant cost difference in having the full lagoon option, with a lifeguard, construction costs and ongoing maintenance costs.

“However, this really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to get a piece of infrastructure that will benefit the whole of the Ipswich community – and if we don’t do it now it probably will never happen.” “We’ve got a young population here in Springfield, and while the existing water park caters for young children we have a lot of teenagers in the area, and I think of the opportunities of having surf lifesaving on a beach in Ipswich would be just great. “We understand Council has cost issues, and they are very supportive, so we need to work through these challenges that a Southbank type development presents.” Mr Breaden said that an upgraded Robelle Parklands coupled with the other major projects in the area would be a huge drawcard for people to settle in the region, which would attract business into the area as well. The Springfield community is looking forward to the opening on 2nd December of the railway line to the Springfield and Springfield Central stations, which will open up Springfield to more settlement in the area – and duplication of the Centenary Highway. Mikkie Finn’s was born from the desire to help locals buy affordable quality clothing. Back in 2009 my daughter was looking for a formal gown. Being the second eldest of five, money was tight and finding a dress within our budget (in Ipswich) was very difficult. With the population of Ipswich and the amount of High Schools I thought it warranted a try for a Formal Shop in the area. So 12 months after the water climbed to 4 metres at my husband’s business at Bundamba, we decided to convert the office there into a shop and see how we went...and only 4 months after opening the doors in February 2012, my husband moved his business next door and I extended the shop to the full length of the industrial shed. The clothes had taken over!

I have over 100 Bridal Gowns in stock. Ranging from size 4 to 22. Some are brand new - ex shop stock, others have only been worn once. Then there’s the ex-hire gowns that sell pretty well because they are still in great shape and only cost from $80! Thats my favourite part - selling a bride a beautiful gown that is within her budget. I also stock formal gowns, evening wear, and casual wear, for ladies or gents. Opening Hours are Monday, Wednesday and Thursday 9am-4pm and 9am-1pm Saturdays. Any consignment, or queries please pop in or give me a call on 0400 691 592 or email mikkiefinns@hotmail.com. We hope to see you soon at Mikkie Finn’s. Michelle – Owner, Mikkie Finns

Enviroplan winners announced Images of a curlew’s piercing gaze and a lady’s fingers knitting have taken out top prizes at this year’s Enviroplan Photographic Competition. Chairperson Councillor Heather Morrow congratulated all winners in eight categories and invited the public to vote for their favourites for the People’s Choice category. “From over 1,000 entries, 44 have been presented with an award or an honourable mention, and all will be up for the People’s Choice award, decided by the public,” Cr Morrow said. “Photographers of all ages and skill levels have taken part in this challenging and exciting photographic experience. “Whether it’s natural landscapes, flora, fauna, or the Bremer River, entrants have captured the natural beauty of Ipswich in surprising and creative ways.” Winners were announced following lengthy deliberations by renowned nature photographer Michael Snedic. Winning entries can be viewed both online and at a special exhibition held at Riverlink Shopping Centre until 6 November. “I’d like to thank all the entrants who have taken both time and care to capture some remarkable photos of parts of the city we see every day but perhaps don’t take the time to appreciate often enough. “Through their lenses we have learnt more about our city and more about the animals and flora we share it with.” Winning entries can be viewed at http://enviroplanphotocomp.com.

Multinational DB Schenker to be first tenant in Redbank Motorway Estate An industrial estate in Redbank is taking shape, with the announcement of the first major tenant at the new $350 milllion ‘Redbank Motorway Estate’ at Redbank Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the first development at the new industrial estate was in preparation for the anchor tenant DB Schenker to house their Queensland logistics business. He said the major development would also bring forward the completion of a direct road link to the Ipswich Motorway via a new overpass at Redbank. “This is tremendous news for our city and I congratulate Goodman Group and DB Schenker for their vote of confidence in Ipswich.” It is anticipated that, when fully built out, Redbank Motorway Estate will provide the City of Ipswich with over 2,300 full-time jobs. “Importantly, the 120 new jobs at DB Schenker’s distribution centre is the beginning of ultimately creating up to 2,300 jobs at Redbank Motorway Estate which is located close to major transport links. “Ipswich has a strong record of creating jobs in 14 business and industry parks. We will continue to welcome ‘good development’ to these generators of employment in close commuting distance to where people live. “Goodman Group has demonstrated a commitment to work with council in securing approvals to allow commencement of the first stage of the 62 hectare site,” Cr Pisasale said.

“This new estate is a good fit with the Ipswich Planning Scheme and complements business and industry uses already established in the surrounding area.” DB Schenker completed an extensive logistics review of various locations across metropolitan Brisbane and chose Redbank, in the City of Ipswich, as their preferred location. The developer is currently completing the short missing link from Monash Road to the new overpass which was built at the time of the motorway upgrade. Consistent with Goodman’s sustainable development approach, the new Estate will also incorporate a further 18 hectares of parkland area on the Brisbane River foreshore adjoining the Estate, and is one of the first industrial estates in Queensland to be National Broadband Network approved. The site was located in an area of Redbank with a long history of industrial activities and was north of the Redbank railway workshops. Works to complete access to the new overpass are due for completion early next year. Above: Artists impression of the DB Schenker facility on completion. Below: Goodman General Manager (Qld) Daniel Brekan shows Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale how the Redbank Motorway Estate will take shape.

Ipswich High the school with purpose At Ipswich State High School, we develop successful citizens by helping each student to identify their affinities and passions. We encourage their transition to adulthood by developing their knowledge and values, enabling them to make wise and just choices, creating a better future for all. So how do we achieve this? In short, Ipswich SHS has adopted Howard Gardner’s ‘Five Minds for the Future’ as the basis for our Curriculum Framework. This framework underpins all of our work at Ipswich High. It is based on the key principle that society’s future leaders need to be able to develop certain ways of thinking and working which allows them to bring out their best in any situation. Professor Gardner describes these five minds: the Respectful Mind, the Ethical Mind, the Disciplined Mind, the Synthesising Mind and the Creative Mind. Keeping this in mind, we also use a positive behavior program which we call ‘Switch’. Switch is a school-based rewards program that encourages students to make a positive switch in their behaviour, effort and academic achievements at Ipswich State High (ISH).

The program uses a points system to publicly reward students who have demonstrated compliance and success in the following school behavioural and academic targets: Smart targets, Willingness, Improvement, Taking initiative, Consistency and Homework. Our school icon is represented by one of Ipswich’s favourite sights, that of the incredible fighters from RAAF Amberley who circle often above the school. The FA-18 fighter jets affectionately known as the Super Hornets have been chosen as the school icon to represent the high flying programs of excellence at the school and the close relationship the Ipswich community has with the airbase just minutes away. Ipswich State High (ISH) stands for being an Honest, Optimistic, Respectful, Nurturing, Enterprising, Tenacious and Successful organization. Your children’s education deserves the chance to reach for the sky, and Ipswich State High is here to help them get there.

An awesome sci fi film set in one of the most immersive universes to date. 2. Forrest Gump Tom Hanks paired with an immersive story involving many popular trademarks and world events. A very clever film. 3. Terminator 2: Judgment Day A classic since childhood, the entire movie is one long chase scene filled with action. 4. The Postman While a slow paced story, I love the amount of thought put into the post apocalyptic setting. 5. The Matrix This movie set a new benchmark for what is considered “cool” in film. Awesome action and special effects.

Sadly, classic rockers Fleetwood Mac have had to cancel their highly anticipated tour for later this year due to illness. Founding member John McVie is scheduled to be in treatment for cancer at the time they were originally scheduled to play. We wish John a speedy recovery. But while Fleetwood Mac are cancelling their tour, plenty more artists have announced theirs. DJ Avicii is heading down under in January - January 24th at the Brisbane Riverstage; Jame’s Blunt is bringing his Moon Landing tour to the Convention Centre June 2; Eminem will be headlining a new hiphop festival Rapture at Suncorp Stadium in February; 67 year old US country singer Dolly Parton is also returning to Brisbane in February

US singer, 31 year old Kelly Clarkson (above) has finally tied the knot. After singing about being unlucky in love for all those years it is wonderful to see Kelly glowing in the photos of her wedding to music manager Brandon Blackstock. Clarkson has hinted that she hopes a baby won’t be too far away: “I already told him that when we’re past the wedding, I want a baby. I was like, ‘That’s my Christmas present that you can give me.’ “

In what might be one of the strangest concerts ever, heavy metal band Metallica are planning on playing to the penguins of Antarctica. Well, not just the penguins, the concert will be broadcast around the world from the Argentine Antarctic Base Carlini on December 9. The band said: “After over 30 years as a band, we have been unbelievably fortunate to visit just about every corner of the earth ... except for one, that is all about to change as we are set travel to Antarctica, the only continent that Metallica has never played on until now!!” Although noise restrictions in Antarctica means the show won’t have any amplifiers and concert goers will have to listen through headphones.

Actress Scarlett Johannson (above) has formed a girl band called The One and Only Singles! It’s not the first time The Avengers star has recorded music, she also did an album with Tom Waits in 2007 but it will be her first pop record. Jahannson said: “I write music sometimes in my trailer when nothing else is happening...I would say it’s super-pop ... It’s like unabashed pop. The idea was to write super-pop dance music written and performed by girls. . And I love the Bangles. And I love the Go-Go’s. I wanted it to be like those bands: ultra pop but also a little ironic, a little in on the joke.” Kimye are going to be officially joined in matrimony. The internet’s most talked about couple are finally engaged. Kayne West proposed to Kim Kardashian on the big screen at a stadium for the San Francisco Giants.

INTERMEDIATE

The next season of Glee (above) will be the last. Series creator Ryan Murphy admitted he’s had to change the original ending planned after Cory Monteith’s death. Murphy said: “The final year of the show, was designed around Rachel and Cory/Finn’s story. I always knew that, I always knew how it would end. I knew what the last shot was - he was in it. I knew what the last line was - she said it to him… I’m going to tell the studio and the network how, after Cory’s unfortunate passing, we can end the show that I think is very satisfactory. And kind of in his honour, which I love.”

Actress Marcia Wallace, the voice of Edna Krabappel (above) on The Simpsons and earlier Carol Kester, the receptionist on the 1970s sitcom The Bob Newhart Show, has died at 70. Wallace, who had survived breast cancer, died at home, according to a Fox publicist, Antonia Coffman. Till next time....Louise Listen to Louise daily 9am-Noon on 97.3FM

Talking Beer WITH PETER COULTAS AT THE YAMANTO TAVERN

New sheriff in town The newest beer in the James Squire Malt Shovel Range is The Constable Copper Ale. The Constable is a deep golden English style Ale, with generous floral, citrus and subtle earthy notes showing a solid backbone of crystal and pale malts with pleasant lingering hop bitterness. With the festive season now upon us, The Constable offers full flavour at a refreshing per cent alcohol per volume a classic thirst quencher. A perfect beer with rich red meat like lamb to match the crystal malts within the beer, with the cleansing characteristics of hops to provide balance. Keeping in line with mid strength craft beer, local Burleigh Brewing has a cracker. Duke Helles is a European style lager. With a slightly maltier character, moderate hopping contributes to a comfortable bitterness and clean refreshing taste. At 3.5% abv this is a great summer BBQ Craft Beer. First Australian F-35 JSF enters production in US The first of Australia’s 5th Generation F-35A Lightning II fighters, destined to become the RAAF’s future combat fighter jet, is now in production in the Lockheed Martin plant in Fort Worth, Texas. The aircraft, designated as AU-1, officially began the mate process, during which major components of the aircraft are joined together to form the aircraft’s structure. AU-1 will then make its way down the assembly line and roll out of the factory for delivery to the RAAF late next year. In 2009, the Australian Government announced its selection of the conventional takeoff and landing (CTOL) F-35A Lightning II to replace its classic Hornet fighter fleet. Up to 100 F-35As are set to be ordered, with the aim of transitioning the Air Force air combat fleet into a next generation net-centric fighter force capable of assuring the nation’s territorial integrity and national security. By operating the same aircraft as allies in the Asia-Pacific and around the world, the RAAF aims to take advantage of the F-35’s powerful sensors to share data to an unprecedented level of interoperability. The global fleet of F-35s will also give Australia advantages in economies of scale on production and sustainment of more than 3,000 F-35s over the coming decades. The global supply chain for the F-35 currently has 14 Australian companies under contract building parts for the F-35. Australian industry

is expected to gain up to $6.3 billion USD in industry opportunities over the life of the F-35 program. Every F-35 built will have some Australian parts and components. The F-35 Lightning II is a 5th generation fighter, combining advanced stealth with fighter speed and agility, advanced mission systems, fully fused sensor information, network-enabled operations and cutting-edge

sustainment. Three distinct variants of the F-35 will replace the A-10 and F-16 for the U.S. Air Force, the F/A-18 for the U.S. Navy, the F/A-18 and AV-8B Harrier for the U.S. Marine Corps, and a variety of fighters for at least 10 other countries. The Chief Executive Officer of the Defence Materiel Organisation, Warren King, said that when integrated into a networked ADF, the

F-35 will fulfil the functions of air dominance and strike capability currently provided by F/A18 Hornets and F/A-18F Super Hornets. AU-1 and the second Australian F-35 aircraft, AU-2, when delivered next year will remain in the US for testing and training. Defence Chief praises ADF personnel for their contribution in Afghanistan On the eve of the withdrawal of Australian troops serving in Afghanistan the Chief of the Defence Force, General David Hurley has congratulated the more than 26,500 Defence personnel who have contributed to Australia’s mission in Afghanistan since 2002. “Over the next 10 weeks the ADF will complete its mission in Uruzgan and the majority of our people will begin to return to Australia. “As this process begins, we reflect on the lasting friendship that has been forged with the people of Afghanistan and ties that we have established with our Afghan and Coalition partners. “The efforts of the international community in Afghanistan have provided the time, space and opportunity to build and field an Afghan National Security Force and to establish the institutional building blocks for the Afghan people to determine their own future. “This is the legacy of those military personnel and civilians killed or wounded in the conflict, including more than 260 Australians who were wounded, and the 40 Australian soldiers who were killed in action. “We will remember them.” Prime Minister Tony Abbott, Defence Minister Senator David Johnston and General Hurley joined representatives from Afghanistan and other countries attended a Recognition Ceremony at Tarin Kot air base on 28 October. The ceremony formally acknowledged the contribution of Australia and its Coalition

partners to the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) mission in Uruzgan. “Since 2005 we have worked in partnership with the Afghans to degrade the insurgency while our training and mentoring has allowed the Afghan National Army 4th Brigade and the Afghan National Security Forces to develop the capability they need to accept responsibility for Uruzgan’s security. “The ADF and our civilian partners have made a lasting contribution to Uruzgan with tangible improvements that have significantly enhanced the quality of life for the people who live in the province. “A succession of reconstruction teams have built or redeveloped hospitals and medical centres; schools; and more than 200km of roads and bridges to enhance health and education and improve vital infrastructure. ADF Family Health Program set to launch in New Year Following the success of a trial conducted across Australia the National ADF Family Health Program will commence on 1st January 2014. Under the Program, dependants of permanent ADF members and dependants of Reservists on continuous full time service can register for the Program. In operation, gap expenses when members visit their general practice will be reimbursed, for services that have a Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) Item Number. Reimbursement of gap expenses will be direct into the member’s bank account. For example, if your GP charges $60 and the Medicare Rebate is $35, the gap amount paid will be $25. In most cases, allied health providers will be able to process your claim on the spot by swiping your ADF Family Health Card in their installed HICAPS system. For Allied Health and Specialist services, the Program will provide up to $400 per family member per financial year to use towards non-cosmetic allied health services and/or used to offset the gap expenses for a specialist service. This amount can also be transferred between family members. From January 2014 to June 2014 a half year a prorata allocation of $200 will apply. Services included in this category include

Audiology, Chiropractic & Osteopathy, Dental, Dietician, Occupational Therapy, Optical, Physiotherapy, Podiatry and Chiropody, Psychology and Speech Therapy. Services provided in a hospital setting and for appliances are not covered. For members with private health insurance, the Program benefits can be used in addition to private health insurance benefits. While the Program is sponsored by the Federal Government the services accessed are considered a fringe benefit. While Defence pays the Fringe Benefit Tax, which does not affect the member’s taxable income, the payments may affect Assessable Income used by Government Departments such as Centrelink in calculating various income tested benefits such as Childcare Benefit and Family Support Payments. To register for the Program the ADF member must complete WebForm AD858-1 ADF Family Health. These can be found via WebForms or on the ADF FH website at: www.defence.gov.au/health/Dependant_ Healthcare/i-healthcare.htm There’s also a Facebook page set up at www.facebook.com/ADFfamilyhealth..

Hidden treasures in property

BY MARK BOURIS

Fixed Rates The low interest rate environment has been good for home buyers and those wanting to refinance, while not being so good for those who live on their savings. Another group of people displeased with the falling cash rate has been those who fixed their home loans around two years ago. Back then – in 2011, when the cash rate was 4.75 per cent – banks were offering 3-year fixed rate mortgages around 6.3 per cent, and many borrowers did better than that. Who was to know the Reserve Bank would get to the end of 2011 and almost halve the cash rate over the next two years? People with 3-year fixed rate mortgages taken in 2011 are still paying 6.3 per cent, while variable rate mortgages are around 4.8 per cent. On a $350,000 home loan, that’s a monthly repayment difference of more than $300. Even the lucky ones who got in on the 5.99 per cent fixed rates are now paying a full one per cent over the variable rate. So should people with eight or ten months left to run on their fixed-rate mortgages bail out and take a variable rate instead? In the financial services industry, we

20 IPSWICHLIFE

call this a ‘break’. Banks tie their fixed rates to the bond and ‘swap’ markets. And these markets are run on terms of debt: 30-day, 90-day, 1 year, 3-year etc. If you want to stop paying your fixed rate mortgage before your 3-year term is up, someone has to pay for that ‘break’, and it won’t be the bank. Fixed rate mortgages include a page dedicated to the ‘break fee’. This is a number formulated on the size of the fixed loan, the term left on the loan and the profit the lender loses having to close-out your loan and accept lower rates in the market. There are a couple of tips I can give: Firstly, always negotiate with the lender when thinking about breaking a fixed loan. All lenders are different and some will give you concessions on the break fee if you’re rolling over into a loan at the same institution. Secondly, most lenders will allow you to roll your break fee into your refinanced loan, so long as you have the equity. This might suit you for short-term cash-flow reasons but remember that if you do this you’ll be paying interest on your break cost for years to come! So, this leads to my third point: if you do break and go to a lower cost loan, think about keeping your repayments the same. It’s a great way to speed your repayment of the loan and wipe that break fee. Mark Bouris Executive Chairman, Yellow Brick Road

They’re the aspirational suburbs across Queensland which many of us perhaps one day hope to live. Maybe they overlook the ocean or the river, or perhaps they are in the city or nestled in the rainforest. But wherever they are, they are the Queensland suburbs at the top of their game when it comes to median house prices. However, according to the latest Real Estate Institute of Queensland (REIQ) data, an analysis of the REIQ’s data-set has found hidden treasures in prestigious suburbs across Queensland. “In all major regions, over the past 12 months, there have been relatively affordable house sales in suburbs which are classified as some of the most desirable to live,” REIQ CEO Anton Kardash said. “Of course, the old adage of buying the worst house in the best street, or the best suburb, still applies but buying wisely in these prestigious locations will help to underpin capital growth, perhaps together with some sweat equity over time.” The most extreme examples over the past 12 months included two separate house sales in Hamilton in Brisbane – one for $6.5 million and the other for $405,000. The median house price for riverside Hamilton for the year ending March was $1.46 million. Likewise on the Sunshine Coast, a home in Minyama sold for $6.75 million while another sold for just $360,000. The Minyama median house price over the year was $760,000.

“This disparity in house price sales was found across all major regions which highlights that hidden treasures can still found, even in our most expensive suburbs, if you are prepared to look – and potentially wait – for them,” Mr Kardash said. In Ipswich’s Augustine Heights, which had a median house price of $500,000, the highest house sale was $727,000 and lowest was $162,000. In Logan City’s Cornubia, which had the suburb’s priciest median house price of $460,000, the highest house sale price was $890,000 and the lowest was $250,000. And a three bedroom house currently on the market in the suburb is looking for offers above $330,000. Despite a median house price of $1.06 million, it seems owning your own slice of Gold Coast paradise is not as unachievable as some would think. One Surfers Paradise home sold in December last year for $454,000, a far cry from the top-shelf sale of The Corso which went for a staggering $6.35 million. “The results are encouraging for upgraders, entry-level purchasers and investors alike with prime location no longer an unrealistic criterion in the quest for the perfect Queensland property,” Mr Kardash said. Newport, in the Moreton Bay regional council area, recorded a median house price of $705,000 over the year ending March and also posted a top house sale of $1.7 million and a bottom sale price of $340,500. A renovated family home is currently for sale for the low $500,000s.

Toyota improves Prado range

Hyundai and Sculpture by the Sea Hyundai Motor Company Australia will again support one of Sydney’s most loved events, ‘Sculpture by the Sea’, as a major partner for its exciting 2013 exhibition. This year will see Hyundai drive art, and the partnership, even further by extending the brand’s presence into the exhibit itself. For a first time Hyundai have collaborated with a multi-award winning Australian designer and sculptor, Sam Deal, to create a unique sculpture installation titled ‘Variation’. Deal is no stranger to Sculpture by the Sea having previously exhibited award winning works at the event. With a long-held fascination for all things mechanical, Deal has used the bodyshell of a Hyundai Veloster as the basis of this project. The result of the 14-week build process is a work depicting the raw undertones of his rural environment with a richness of tone and

earthly energy. Deal has documented his progress in a video diary providing a fascinating insight into the artistic process. As with all of Deal’s work, his alternative approach encourages and rewards observers who interact with it, often with surprising elements not necessarily obvious at first sight. Currently Australia’s highest selling small SUV, the Hyundai ix35, offers true family friendly credentials, combining outstanding safety features, technology and economy. The world’s largest annual free-to-the-public outdoor sculpture exhibition, now in its 17th year, runs until November 10th in Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs.

Honda’s CBR600RR takes inspiration Toyota’s LandCruiser Prado has retained its best-seller status ahead of a comprehensive model upgrade that is soon to arrive in Australia. The revamped Prado will be sold exclusively as a five-door wagon, reflecting overwhelming customer preference for this body style. Prado has defied the odds in 2013 by continuing its reign as Australia’s most popular large SUV in the lead-up to the release of the revised range. Australian motorists have bought more than 11,300 Prado wagons in the nine months ended September 30 - a figure that is 8.8 per cent higher than its nearest rival. The strong result this year follows record sales of 17,045 vehicles in 2012 when Prado also topped local sales of large SUVs. Toyota Australia executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said imminent changes to the Prado range would build on its strong appeal. “While customers who have bought the three-door Prado tell us they love its offroad and towing capabilities, there is an overwhelming preference for the five-door body style,” Mr Cramb said. “SUV customers, who appreciate the Prado’s rugged credentials, have made it clear they also want the added space, flexibility and

convenience made possible by having two extra doors,” he said. “New Prado also benefits from expanded driver guidance and technical support features, as well as a bolder exterior, a more refined interior, added safety and even sharper handling.” While Prado remains the top-selling large SUV, Toyota also offers Kluger (9,113 sales so far in 2013) and FJ Cruiser (2,010 sales) in the same segment. Combined sales of these three vehicles at 22,482 units so far this year represents a Toyota share of almost 28.2 per cent in the large SUV segment (<$70K) - better than one out of every four vehicles sold. Toyota has sold more SUVs than any other carmaker in each of the 10 years since the category was formed - a decade that corresponds with Toyota being the bestselling brand. Toyota is on track to extend those marketleading runs to 11 years in 2013, for both SUVs and total vehicles sold. In the past decade, Toyota has delivered almost half a million SUVs to Australian customers, of which LandCruiser Prado has accounted for almost 30 per cent or more than 147,000 vehicles.
