With a return to the original format with four trainers, and a renewed energy, its fair to

springtime! Winter is over, Footy Finals are here and we beggin the run into the warmer weather (including a huge ‘El Nino’ according to the boffins) right now! So the timing is perfect for the opening of the brand new Orion Lagoon in Springfield which is set to be a massive hit with Ipswich residents and is according to the Mayor will draw over 100,000 visitors to the Ipswich region. In this issue we have a great ‘Home & Garden’ feature full of ideas to renovate your home as this is the perfect time of year to get busy around your abode. Also in this issue we feature the Ipswich Fashion Festival, chat with Tiffiny Hall about her return to The Biggest Loser... sorry....’ TBL: Families’ and talk to the director of a new documentary about the history of mining in our state. Remember IpswichLife is FREE thanks to our advertisers so please show them your support and shop local. Just tell them you saw it in Ipswich Life! Till next time.... darren@strikepublications.com.au

After a couple of years away from the show, Tiffiny Hall is returning to The Biggest Loser, and she couldn’t be happier about it. Returning to the format of ‘Families’, the new show is named ‘TBL:Families’, and along with a new host, and shorter run, the show is set to return to the big viewing numbers it enjoyed for many years. Married to MMM’s Brisbane morning show host Ed Kavalee, Tiffiny is enjoying living in Brisbane and after getting hitched, found the timing was right to make a return to the show that made her a household name. “Since I’ve been away from the show I published four novels, as writing is something I’m really passionate about,” Tiffiny said. “The producers approached me about returning. It was a much shorter season, only 12 weeks compared to previous years when I had to relocate and spend six months on it. “I was in the midst of planning my wedding, so I returned from my honeymoon and went straight into filming. “The truth is, I love, love, LOVE working

in fitness. I love the show, and what it stands for…so for me it was a pleasure to return. At the end of the day, the show still promotes a good message.” Taking charge of the white team, Tiffiny is given a family from Western Australia, including Cliff, who weighed in at over 190kg. “This season the show has been stripped back to what people loved about it. The ‘families’ concept was the most popular, which a white team member won I might add….and the producers really wanted to go back to that idea, along with having four trainers again. “I was pumped to be a part of it. This is all about making families healthier, being confident and learning lessons for life. It’s also much lighter, and a ton of fun. “People can relate to the idea of a family… plus TV-wise, there is great tension between family members at times along the way. “Cliff is in my team at 190kg,” Tiffiny said. “He’d just lost his father, and was unemployed. Sometimes when people have a bad time in their life, they turn to food. He came on the

show, grieving and trying to make changes in his life. I’m so proud of him. The saddest thing was he was in a relationship where he admitted to his partner that all they had in common was food, and eating. “As much as we work with them physically, we also work on them emotionally … otherwise the weight is going to go straight back on. We have to work on the emotional fitness too and that’s what I love about the job.” As part of the process, all trainers had to spend a week with the families. Doing what they did, with no training and worst of all, eating what they eat. “Yes, that’s true I did spend a week with the family. It was amazing, but also important to get an insight into what they eat. It gave me a look also into the dynamics of the family. To use Cliff as an example again, he never drank water. “Instead he drank about 4-5 litres of soft drink every day, and I could see straight away there was an addiction to sugar. That then gave me a plan of attack.

o say Tiffiny Hall is pumped about TBL: Families. “For me though, it was horrible. I had some ghastly reactions to living their life, eating their food, and not training for me was quite confronting. My mood changed too. I was lethargic and didn’t feel like exercising at all. My stomach was so bloated I couldn’t even train even if I wanted to. My skin went bad, and all of the trainers put on weight! “The transformations on this season are mind blowing. The makeovers you won’t believe. They don’t just lose weight, these people realise their dreams. “There are lots of jaw dropping moments, one in particular on the scales. I can’t wait to see it go to air. I always have it on in the background at home. “We’re not there all the time as trainers, and we’re not privvy to temptations and other stuff…we only find out from the contestants what they tell us. But when I see all the bits I wasn’t involved in on TV, it fills in the pieces of the jigsaw. They might say ‘oh no, I didn’t take temptation’ but then I see it on the TV and I realise why they didn’t lose weight that week, so I love to watch it.”

The show has come in for criticism over the years, highlighting the fact that the weight losses are staged, it is unrealistic and unsustatinable, but Tiffiny believes as its core, is a strong message with education. “One of the things about the show I love is educating people about the food they are eating. “Sure it’s a TV show, and we have to create content, maybe with a bit of drama. But the reality is these people are exercising up to 3 times a day, eating healthy diets, on nutrition plans and the trainers say what goes in the fridge. But it’s up to them to get up early and go training…that’s the reality, and it falls to them. “I still love the training of martial arts that I get from Tae Kwon Do,” Tiffny added. “Self discipline is still important to my training but I mix it up a bit. I love to do a bit of CrossFit, some yoga, swimming, weight training, athletics…I really believe in keeping it interesting. I have to bring that mixed bag, and my training style has evolved over time.” TBL: Families starts on Network Ten on Sunday September 13.

TIME TO START SHOOTING The Enviroplan Photography Competition is on again! Each issue until closing date Ipswich Life will feature some of the best pics from previous years and find out the story behind the photo. Jose from Newtown (pictured with his daughter Ash) has always been a fan of photography. In 2014 he got a special mention in the People in the Natural Environment category and Ash was the Primary Student runner up. “I’ve been keen on photography since I was a teenager. I remember using the old Hanimex cameras from the chemist,” Jose said. . “A couple of years ago we were given a photo voucher as a present, and then I saw the results. For the money they wanted for the photos I thought ‘I could do better’, so I started practicing techniques with my camera. “I take photos everywhere I go, and I especially love portraits and landscapes. “The girl in the picture ‘Hidden World’ is my niece from Dirranbandi. The family came to Ipswich on holidays and I did some photos in the Japanese Gardens in Queens Park. She was playing and just happened to look through the hedge.

“The light was so good I grabbed my camera. Everything worked out with that photo. Such beautiful colours! “I heard the Enviroplan contest in local press, and I thought ‘I might give that a go’. My daughter Ash also entered last year, and I took her to the same Japanese Gardens for a look around, and she took some photos. She has more of a creative eye that I do. She saw this path and took some photos, which became ‘The Chosen Way’. “She’s 12 and entering again this year. She loves landscapes at the moment, especially pics with lots of trees. “I will be entering again this year. I’m looking at flora and fauna at the moment. I love the parks in Ipswich, we are spoilt for choice. “There are so many good spots in Ipswich I’d be surprised if most people who live here realise how many great open spaces we have!”

Springfield – ‘Orion Lagoon’ OPEN! The new ‘Orion Lagoon’ in Springfield is now open, and is set to be the number one destination for Ipswich residents over the Summer months. No longer will families have to drive to South Bank to enjoy a great day out, with the location right next to shops and the soon to open Event Cinemas. The ‘Orion Lagoon’ was officially opened and named in a landmark agreement between Ipswich City Council and Mirvac, owner of Orion Springfield Central. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale welcomed the sponsorship agreement as a vote of confidence in the future of the city. “Orion Lagoon is equal in size to the famed beach at South Bank and one of the largest outdoor recreation facilities of its kind anywhere in Australia,” he said. “This is a huge achievement for the city and is expected to bring 100,000 visitors to Ipswich each year which will provide a tremendous boost for local businesses. “With the inclusion of a café, barbecue facilities, enhanced lighting and outdoor furniture, local and visiting families can come down and enjoy a splash in the lagoon with the kids or meet friends for lunch all within easy access to Orion Town Centre and the Springfield Central train station. “We couldn’t be more proud of Orion Lagoon and I want to thank Mirvac for their on-going support,” Cr Pisasale said. “We’ve got good players here, this is not just about profit, its about being involved in the community and you don’t find too many retailers like Mirvac. When you support their centres they give back. It’s good retailing.” Mirvac Group Executive, Retail, Susan MacDonald said the Lagoon, combined

with Orion Springfield Central’s soon to be completed Event Cinema complex and Town Square dining precinct, will create a genuine leisure destination. “We are developing Orion Springfield Central as a lifestyle precinct – it will be the heart of the community focused on offering an experience that is much more than shopping” Ms MacDonald said. “We’ve been working alongside council for a few years and this is all part of that vision. We’ve all said at Mirvac that when the cinemas open we’ll bring our togs with us for the grand opening!” Mirvac is creating a pedestrian link from the Lagoon to Orion’s dining and cinema precinct that is due to open in November 2015. The $154 million Stage 2 expansion will be completed in March 2016 and will see Orion Springfield Central become the ninth largest shopping centre in Queensland. “We have lots of lifeguards and fencing here” added Mayor Pisasale. “But I urge all parents to watch your kids here. I pushed Paul Tully in the water on behalf of the people of Ipswich, and he’s a good sport… but don’t be like the Mayor….never push people in the pool! Be ‘MayorSmart’.” Main: Amber-Lee, Cameron and Dylan all from Redbank Plains, finished school and checked out the lagoon…giving it a big thumbs up. Below left: It wasn’t me! Mayor Pisasale denies pushing in Cr Tully Below right: Cr Paul Tully, Mirvac’s Susan MacDonald and Mayor Pisasale officially open the Orion Lagoon.

Local store wins national award Helloworld in the Ipswich Mall has received two national awards recognising the stores commitment to Ipswich and helping people with their travel needs. Owner Suraj Arachchige received a Gold award, and Travel Consultant Kimberley Sheean received a Silver award for sales and service in the Ipswich region. The awards were handed out at the Helloworld National Conference in Cairns recently, and recognised their efforts to the Ipswich community. “I’m passionate about travelling” said Suraj. “I’ve visited (so far) 36 countries. Research is always a part of it, but you have to love travelling. Nothing is better than giving a customer first hand experiences on the place they plan to visit. “My favourite of the lot is Switzerland, I love the natural beauty, the people, the culture.

“Personally my ideal holiday would be the Maldives. There’s no internet, no TV, in fact no technology at all, just go there and relax by the beach, and there is so much natural beauty there too. “I find that most Ipswich locals love cruising. After cruises, we get asked a lot about Europe and Canada. Those are easily the three most popular.” Below: Kimberley and Suraj with their awards

Local Sporting Champs Recognised Sixteen local sporting stars from Ipswich and the Somerset region have been celebrated and awarded grant funding to support their athletic careers at the Blair Local Sporting Champion awards ceremony. Since 2008, 274 athletes in Ipswich and the Somerset Region have taken part in the Local Sporting Champions Program which provides funding assistance to help cover the costs of travel, accommodation, equipment and uniforms for young people participating in a state or national sporting competition. Federal Member for Blair Shayne Neumann said he was honoured to present these outstanding young athletes with certificates. “I know it’s tough for families to cover the extra costs of young people competing across the State which is why programs like Local Sporting Champions are so important to help covers those costs,” Mr Neumann said. “These sixteen young athletes all live

locally and have excelled in their chosen sport, including athletics, swimming, soccer, gymnastics, basketball, softball, skate, rugby union and indoor cricket. “I admire young people who have the discipline to train every day to get better at a sport, like 13 year old Holly who will compete in the National Youth Championships in soccer or Tori who is 15 years old and trains 23 hours a week to prepare for the Australian Gymnastics Championships. “It’s great to know that the future of women’s basketball is in safe hands with the Under 14 Girls Australian Juniors Basketball Championships team including four locals who have all been supported by Local Sporting Champions grants. “I encourage parents, coaches and junior athletes to apply for the next Local Sporting Champions round which closes on October 31st.

The Ipswich Turf Club together with the CFMEU have organised for the brand new car to be given away at the Family Fun day for one lucky winner. USQ opens state of the art building An exciting new era of education has begun at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) following the official opening of USQ Springfield’s new flagship building last week. USQ Chancellor John Dornbusch was joined by Senator for Queensland Jo Lindgren to officially open the new $45 million building, which represents a major milestone in a remarkable journey of growth for USQ and south-east Queensland’s Western Corridor. The state-of-the-art building was supported by $41.9 million from the Australian Government and was awarded a five-star rating by the Green Building Council of Australia, offering an impressive new hub of innovative teaching and learning at the campus.

“The official opening of USQ’s new building is testament to a continuing commitment to invest in and improve access to higher education in the region and deliver high standard teaching and learning facilities,” Mr Dornbusch said. “Springfield is an emerging city with an outstanding education sector and USQ is immensely proud to be the primary higher education provider for one of the nation’s fastest growing areas.” USQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Jan Thomas said the building strengthened the University’s growing reputation as southeast Queensland’s most dynamic university and allowed USQ to grow and enrich student

participation. “The University is expanding its range of pathway and degree offerings that will continue to meet the current and future skills needs of business, industry and the community,” Professor Thomas said. “The building was a key component of the University’s strategy for expansion, and in particular, fulfils USQ Springfield’s increased focus on digital performance and production

as well as business innovation. “The expansion has also enabled the University to accommodate the additional staff who will provide USQ Springfield’s new offerings in spatial science and aviation, while increased student support and services have enhanced our capacity to deliver pathway courses such as the Tertiary Preparation Program.” The 9000-square metre, four-storey building provides a focal point for teaching and research activities as well as leading edge facilities for offerings in film, television and radio, and digital production and performance. Construction commenced in November 2013 with students and staff experiencing the positive difference in the space as a result of the environment focus for the first time last semester. The new building features: • a Five-Star Green-Star rated building design that maximises the provision of fresh air and natural light a central learning commons and hub • collaborative and configurable learning spaces • specialist teaching spaces • individual and group study areas • staff accommodation

Sam Martin will be the 11th Jet to reach the century after Danny Coburn, Brendon Marshall, Brendon Lindsay, Brian McCarthy, Tyson Lofipo, Ricky Bird, Luke Walker, Keiron Lander, Danny McAllister and Ian Lacey. Sam Martin made his debut for the Jets against Redcliffe on 12 June 2010. A game the Jets lost 18-12 at the North Ipswich Reserve. Martin has scored 22 tries in his 99 games and has 88 points Sam started as a tackling machine but has developed a great attacking game, Martin constantly asks questions of defenders running back at their inside shoulder and has a great ability to back up with support play while still being fearless in defence. “He is a player who his team mates admire and through his determination, competitiveness and his overall will to win has seen him reach 100 games,” said cocoach Ben Walker. Also reaching a milestone was Rod Griffin, who has just played his 150th InTrust Super Cup game including 67 for the Ipswich Jets. Below: Rod Griffin (left) and Sam Martin are fired up for the Ipswich Jets finals campaign.

Branson wins Qld Open Golf at Brookwater David Bransdon edged out fellow professional Rohan Blizard after a three-hole play-off in a drama-charged final round of the Isuzu Queensland Open at Brookwater Golf Club. Blizard birdied the 71st hole to level at 12-under, and both golfers finished 12 under par forcing the sudden-death playoff. In the end it was 41-year old Bransdon who hoisted the T B Hunter Cup after making a four metre putt on the third playoff hole. The Queensland Open will be played at Brisbane Golf Club next year, as Brookwater undertakes major work on the course, but the Open returns to Brookwater in 2017.

What is your Style? Country or Contemporary What is your style?…There are so many options when it comes to choosing interiors, everything from furniture to lighting! Contemporary and country stylings are two very popular styles in interior design. It has often been noted that your interior design aesthetic reflects elements of your personality. So what style do you identify with most? Could you potentially be a little bit country, or more contemporary in nature? If you like contemporary styling, you will likely gravitate towards clean lines, open spaces and natural elements. Contemporary also refers to styles that are popular at any one moment in time. In today’s terms that would mean bold blocks of colour, geometric shapes, black and white (monochrome) colour and unique pieces of furniture, all displayed in an uncluttered open space. Country styling can be quite broad with influences from a number of different era’s and origins i.e. American country, English country, French country. Country styling has evolved, as requirements from a modern world have changed, however one thing that has remained consistent (despite era or location) is warmth, comfort and that desire for cosines. The La-Z-Boy Henderson chair also lends itself to this style with its comforting wing back arm rests and the cow hide fabric on the back and sides. Match it with the richness of colour from a floral accent cushion, traditional inspired lamp, textured accent cushion and warm cosy throw and your space will exude Country living. For further information please do not hesitate to call the helpful team at your local Furniture Court and Beds R Us at 30 South Street, Ipswich or call 3281 2977.

SOLAR PANELS

waiting for the hot water to warm up.

3 I won’t miss having to search through my sock drawer...

Solar panel cleaning is not that different from cleaning your windscreen. You can do it yourself, or have other people do it for you. A solar panel typically consists of solar cells covered by a protective glass coating, and just like your car windscreen – the longer it’s outside – the more likely it will get dirty and need to be cleaned. Pollution, traffic dust, leaves and even bird droppings contribute to preventing sunlight from reaching the solar cells in your solar panels. The more dirt – the lower amount of electricity they will produce. While many factors affect how much electricity your solar panels will produce – dirty solar panels can be one of the biggest, and easiest to fix. Experts agree that dirty solar panels don’t produce as much power as clean panels. To solve this NOW and make the most of the best solar energy-producing months, contact Phil’s Property Maintenance for solar panel cleaning, gutter cleaning and all kinds of jobs you need doing around the house or garden. Queensland Urban Utilities is urging Ipswich residents to stop flushing wet wipes down the toilet to help keep the local sewerage network healthy, and its becoming a major problem. Many wipes, including those labelled ‘flushable’ commonly found on supermarket shelves do not disintegrate quickly when flushed, contributing to blockages in both household plumbing and the wider network. Even though they are clearly marked ‘flushable’ they do not break down like toilet paper does. Queensland Urban Utilities spokesperson, Michelle Cull, said wipes were a particular problem at the sewage pump station in Riverview Rd at Riverview. “We’ve noticed an increase in the number of wet wipes arriving at the pump station each day,” she said. “It’s an issue because they get stuck in the pumps and equipment, and have to be manually cleared and transported to landfill.” A new survey has shown almost one in five people are now disposing of wipes labelled ‘flushable’ down the toilet, but the problem is they don’t dissolve. “We’ve tested some for over 12 months now and they still haven’t started to break down.

“We remove around 120 tonnes of wet wipes from our sewerage network every year. Laid end-to-end, that’s enough wipes to stretch all the way from Brisbane to New Zealand,” Ms Cull said. “We’re asking everyone to only flush the three P’s - pee, poo and paper.” Ms Cull said the removal of wet wipes from the network was adding to the cost of the sewage treatment process. “Each year we spend $2.5 million clearing around 2500 blockages in sewer pipes and wet wipes are a big contributing factor,” she said. “We’re asking people to dispose of all wipes, whether they’re labelled ‘flushable’ or not, in the rubbish bin. Just because something can be flushed, doesn’t mean it should be.” Currently over $2.5 million has been spent responding to sewer breaks and blockages each year, and as the wipes have to be removed manually, yet only around 16% of the local population is using these wipes. The most commonly flushed wipes are personal hygiene wipes (38%), baby wipes (38%) and cleaning wipes (26%) Above: Queensland Urban Utilities’ Michelle Cull and Manager Commercial Water & Trade Waste Col Hester with some of the kinds of products they don’t want to see in the system.

The Reluctant Psychic

By Susan Saxman Born in suburban New York in the 1960s, Suzan Saxman has spent a her life coming to terms with her extraordinary gifts. As a child, she saw things that terrified her and her uncanny insight alienated her from other children and her own mother. But as an adult, she slowly learnt to use her psychic ability to bring comfort to those in need. She has connected the living with the dead, brought messages of hope from one world to another, and helped clients bring the shadow of their past into the light of the present. Described as an ‘uncanny and profoundly moving book’ by Proof of Heaven author, Eben Alexander, this is a gripping and sometimes unsettling portal into the life of a woman who lives in many worlds, some wildly far from and some eerily near to our own. ‘Blood On The Coal’ is narrated by Aussie acting legend Jack Thompson, and tells the chequered history of mining over the last hundred years, and looks in depth at such events like the Moura, Collinsville and Box Flat disasters. Director of the documentary, Jeff Bird, told Ipswich Life that he spent a lot of time in Ipswich talking to survivors of the disaster, and found their stores not only enthralling, but heartbreaking. “The Box Flat Disaster is still very raw in minds of many people in Ipswich, and I felt that when I was there,” Jeff said. “These men really have never had a chance to process everything properly. I feel that they were left to their own devices. “They lost their mates and were all just expected to get on with it. As these guys are getting older, I really felt for them, as with age they were thinking about it more and more. “Some of them get quite emotional in the movie, and I got the impression that it was something that they just didn’t talk about. Many people told me that they may not want to talk about it on camera, but they did. These men opened up to me, and often got very upset talking

about Box Flat, and keep in mind the men who died are still underground. “I understand why they sealed the mine, as when you get an explosion like that, along with the chain reactions, there was no way any of those men could have survived. They sealed the mine to stop any secondary explosions, but I believe those men shouldn’t have been down there in the first place. You shouldn’t send men to fight a fire, just to save a mine.” The documentary also looks at disasters like Collinsville, and Moura, which during its time

and will have a special screening in Ipswich this week, and it features heart of the Ipswich community back on July 31st, 1972. saw three mining disasters in a 20 year period. During his career, Jeff has been around mines many times, and even filmed underground. “I was asked to direct this documentary, as I’ve made a couple of films about coal miners. You have to have an understanding about the industry…not just business, but understanding miners and their communities. I’ve been around them enough to know what they are like. I’ve spent many hours down mines. “Some mines are hot, as it depends how

WHAT’S NEW

deep they are. Most mines that I’ve been to aren’t really deep, but they are pretty scary places. I went underground at United Collieries in NSW. We went down there for a morning but had to spend a day and a half doing safety training beforehand. We were the first film crew in 20 years to go down a mine in NSW. I can see why. It was a dangerous place. These days with machinery cutting coal, there is more chance of gas being released. “Before OHS the conditions were terrible. I know of miners 50 years ago that didn’t wear shoes. The last explosion in Qld was 1994…and those blokes are still underground. One person in the doco says that he used to mine in silk undies and nothing else…as it was so hot.” “I felt it was important for me to tell these stories as these guys were getting older and now is the time to do it. These ‘diggers’ could be gone in a few years and we won’t have those first hand accounts…that’s Australian history, and we need to record it.” Blood On The Coal screens at BCC Ipswich City Cinemas on September 7th for one night only

WITH TIM AT THE PRINCE ALFRED HOTEL

Tap’d sets new Aussie record Big things are happening at the Prince Alfred Hotel. Word is starting to spread about a new bar opening soon. What will this new bar be like? I’m here today to fill you in and give you all the juicy details because yes, I’m very excited. First of all the new bar at the Prince Alfred Hotel will be called Tap’d - bringing it into line with previous naming pattern with Char’d and Chill’d. Tap’d’s namesake comes from the fact that it has - wait for it - 72 different beers and ciders on tap. Now that is impressive! Tap’d will have the most number of beer taps in any bar in the whole of Australia. Imagine that, a record holding bar right here in Ipswich! Tap’d will have everything from your favorite everyday beers to your packed-with-flavour craft beers as well as ciders, ginger beer and even a sneaky hard lemonade. Tap’d will also feature over 10 different sports channels playing all the time, TVs everywhere throughout the bar, with a giant projector screen playing the major sporting events. These channels include Fox Sports, ESPN and Sky Racing…(this is just getting better and better!) To accompany all the beer drinking and sports watching Tap’d will feature a menu showcasing a wide variety of slow-cooked meats, mouth-watering steaks and specialty

bites that are designed to match with beer perfectly. The kitchen is working incredibly hard to bring you loads of flavour in every meal. If you’re not excited about this bar now then your a hard person to please! Tap’d is on schedule to open next week so keep an eye out. In the meantime you can keep up-to-date with all Tap’d news by liking it on Facebook. Also keep an eye out at the Prince Alfred Hotel as they will be giving away Tap’d Tokens during upcoming promotions, these tokens will work as vouchers to use in the first month that Tap’d is open. Until next time! Cheers, Tim

After ‘Phantom’ One year ago the ‘Phantom of the Opera’ wowed audiences in Ipswich. The show captivated audiences at the Civic Centre, and went on to win an Ipswich Australia Day Award. At the recent 40th Anniversary event at the Ipswich Civic Centre, the Phantom returned for an encore performance. A year on, we caught up with the two lead actors Rob Shearer and Lauren Lee InnisYouren to see what they have been up to, and how they felt about being part of one of the best shows ever to appear on an Ipswich stage. Rob Shearer has kept busy since the show and still loves it as a role. “Doing the Mayor’s Command Performance as part of the Ipswich Civic Centre’s 40th Anniversary was fantastic,” Robert said. “It just felt right. It all came back to us pretty quickly. I think we had two rehearsals and it clicked back into place for the return performance. “Phantom is one of those stories that has become folklore. It has all the makings of a great musical, with a love triangle, and selfsacrifice. I suppose because it was so ground breaking in the late 1980’s and because of the fact it hasn’t stopped playing around the world ever since…between it and ‘Les Miserables’ we may never see such pieces of work like this again that remain popular for so long. “It’s interesting to see how the role has developed over time. I’ve revisited the role twice, and after the Ipswich production I had a different feeling to it. It was great doing it in Ipswich, it’s a good size stage. A year on I’m still in contact with most of the people in the show. “Now, I’m doing ‘Putting it Together’ by Stephen Sondheim at the Little Theatre. My passion has always been Sondheim’s work, and I’m doing a bit of TV with Griffith University.” Lauren Lee Innis-Youren lives on the Gold Coast now, and dedicates her time to her You Tube channel and studying, while teaching dance. For her, the role of Christine was a dream come true. “There is such a family feeling to community theatre, you’re there volunteering not getting paid for it. I miss everyone on the show, it was such a wonderful cast to perform with. We’d have loved the season to go longer, it was so much fun, and such a great show,” Lauren said. “I’ve always loved Phantom. It was the first show I ever saw, and it inspired me to start singing. I had the recording with Michael

Crawford and Sarah Brightman. I’ve seen it in London, and so many times since. “It’s such a beautiful story. I always loved the idea of the underdog winning…we all have a romantic side, and that resonates with everyone. You just want him to win so badly….but if you look at it he’s a bit ‘stalky’, which also makes him a bit creepy! “Auditioning was a bit of a drive for me, and I hadn’t been well, so initially I thought it was going to be hard for me to do. But Rob got in my ear and begged me to come down, he knew it was a role I’d always wanted to play. He convinced me to audition, and see what happened. I did the audition, and after the first call back was offered the role! “A year on, I’m studying at the Brisbane Academy of Musical Theatre, plus I’m teaching dancing. I haven’t done any other shows since ‘Phantom’ as I’ve dedicated myself to studying, but I’ve done a couple of short films, plus started a youtube channel. My goal is professional theatre, but I’m getting quite an interest in film, but theatre will always be a passion.”

The Ritz Theatre opened on April 26, 1940 with the screening of Shipyard Sally starring Gracie Fields and South of the Border starring Gene Autry. The Ritz Theatre was situated in Bell St, Ipswich in between the Ritz Cafe and Cribb and Foote’s (later Reid’s) Department Store. The first air-conditioned theatre in Ipswich it housed an enormous air-conditioning plant run by refrigeration engineer Earle Pommer. Movie theatres in the 1950s had a large staff of usherettes who wore very smart uniforms and whose job status was almost on a par with airline stewardesses. They would advertise movies by having a theme such as children dressed as indians to advertise the film The Light in the Forest in 1961 and wagons outside the theatre to advertise Arizona starring William Holden in 1941.

The Ritz had a large candy store in the foyer and boasted a crying room for mothers with babies. The theatre closed on April 26, 1966 and the building was sold to Cribb and Foote in March 1966 and demolished later in the year. Hornets prepare for air strikes inside Syria As Australia considers joining air strikes against Islamic State fighters in Syria, the contingent of RAAF air elements that forms Australia’s Air Task Group (ATG) are preparing for that eventuality.

Operation OKRA comprises six RAAF F/A-18 Hornet aircraft, an E-7A Wedgetail Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft and a KC30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport aircraft. RAAF fighter have been conducting air strikes against Islmaic State targets in northern Iraq since October last year, first with F/A-18F Super Hornets of No 1 Squadron and more IpswichLife 2015-02-11T14:28:17+11:00

recently with F/A-18 Hornets home-based at RAAF Base Williamtown, NSW. Under current arrangements, Australia deployed forces to the Middle East at the request of the United States and Iraqi governments, but this did not include air strikes across the Iraqi border into Syria. Conceding that the current campaign is not

reducing Islam State occupation of territory in Iraq, the Federal Government seems ready to expand the area of operations for our fighters and support aircraft to enable air strikes inside Syria. Defence offers up old Defence is looking for new owners for a few Canberra bomber airframes, including one on RAAF Base Amberley, but enthusiasts and historians need not worry that the one adjacent to the old main gate at the base is to be taken away. The airframe is A84-203, which is one used for firefighter training, but no longer. To get a last chance look at this aircraft, visitors to the RAAF Amberley Heritage Centre on Sunday, 20 September will be able to see inside the aircraft type that served in Australia’s defence for 30 years. The Department of Defence is calling on organisations that may want to take the vintage bombers away, with ownership of the planes “transferred by deed of gift.” Prospective owners need to know that the offerings are not much of a bargain, as the airframes are in poor condition and have had most of the internal equipment removed. Prospective new owners will also need to make their mind up quickly, as expressions of interest need to be submitted by 21 September. Disposal is planned for three Air Force Heritage Aircraft - One Canberra aircraft located at RAAF Base Wagga - A84-226, one Canberra aircraft located at RAAF Base Amberley - A84203, and one Neptune aircraft located at RAAF Base Townsville – A89-272. Canberra aircraft have a long history connected with RAAF Amberley. Prior to the delivery of the F-111 from 1973 two squadrons of Canberra bombers formed the frontline bomber fleet for the RAAF. Subsequent to the F-111 taking over the strike/reconnaissance role a few Canberras continued flying photo survey

Canberra bombers operations over Papua New Guinea and Irian Jaya (now West Papua) along with providing survey photography of parts of Australia for map making purposes. The Canberra is probably best known for its bombing operations during the Vietnam War. Despite being a 1950s vintage bomber with only rudimentary onboard systems, when compared with modern bombers, the aircrews of No 2 Squadron based at Phan Rang Air Base in Ninh Thuan province from 1967 established a reputation for precision bombing of high value targets, achieving an enviable success rate. Earlier, No 2 Squadron was based at RAAF Base Butterworth on Malaysia’s west coast, deploying there in 1958 to relieve the Lincolnequipped No 1 Squadron. During the Malayian Emergency, the squadron undertook airstrikes against communist forces and after the conflict ended, it remained in Malaysia throughout the early 1960s during the conflict known as ‘Confrontation’. The squadron returned to Australia in 1971, having been deployed overseas for a total of 13 years. Photo: A Canberra bomber of No 2 Squadron on a bombing mission during the Vietnam War. (Defence)

Senate passes legislation on ADF Super, ADF Cover and part-time jobs A new military superannuation scheme, to be known as ADF Super, will be brought into being from 1 July 2016 following the legislation’s successful passage through the Senate. Defence says that the new scheme aims to fix one of the longest running grievances of the veteran and ex-Service community, namely the lack of flexibility and portability of a member’s superannuation benefit when they leave the ADF. Defence-related organisations such as the RSL, Australian Defence Association (ADA) and Defence Force Welfare Association (DFWA) have consulted with Government on the various issues connected with the existing Military Superannuation and Benefits Scheme (MSBS) – and the need to have a superannuation scheme with more choice combined with a death and disability scheme, to be called ADF Cover. One of the biggest changes to be brought in with ADF Super is the option for ADF members to select any complying superannuation fund in which to invest their superannuation benefit. Essentially, this enables ADF members to choose the management of their financial future in respect of superannuation. The new scheme continues a generous employer contribution rate of 16.4 per

cent, in recognition of the unique nature of military service. In terms of choosing which scheme ADF members can join, ADF members who join on and after 1 July 2016 will automatically join the new scheme. Members of the current MSBS may choose to move to the new scheme or remain in the current scheme; they will not be compelled to move to ADF Super. The MSBS will be closed to new entrants from 1 July 2016. Also available to members of ADF Super will be ADF Cover, which provides full death and invalidity cover for ADF personnel. ADF Cover will provide death and invalidity cover consistent with that provided to members of the current MSBS. From an employment perspective, the package of Bills passed in the Senate also establishes the legislative basis for creating more flexible employment arrangements for permanent ADF members. Assistant Minister for Defence, Stuart Robert, said that for the first time, ADF members will be able to seek part-time work arrangements, subject to Defence’s capability requirements. “This provides additional flexibility for members of the military while also improving the ADF’s ability to recruit and retain personnel,” he said.

Sovereign Pocket becomes party zone More than 150 people attended a colourful street carnival at Stockland’s Sovereign Pocket community at Deebing Heights to celebrate the official opening of a brand new display village. Stockland Regional Manager, David Laner, said another highlight of the event was the chance for the public to wander through the new homes and be inspired by the stunning designs on display. Mr Laner said that the street carnival was a perfect way to cap off yet another milestone achievement at the fast-growing Sovereign Pocket which is located in the western corridor. Sovereign Pocket will eventually have around 700 homes and the popular community has been a hive of activity this year. A new 5,000 square metre central park, featuring shelters, barbecues and fitness equipment has recently opened at Sovereign Pocket and an independent school catering for students in prep to year six, is currently being built at the community. The new school, which will ultimately cater for more than 900 students, will open in 2016.

New Kia Sportage The all-new Sportage will make its global debut at the Frankfurt International Motor Show next week.

1927 Harley-Davidson One of the world’s rarest Harley-Davidson motorcycles will be offered with ‘no reserve’ at Shannons Melbourne Spring Auction on September 21, creating enormous interest from collectors around the world. The circa-1927 FHA 8-Valve V-Twin racer with a scramble-type sidecar attached is reputedly one of fewer than 50 examples built by the America manufacturer – some say considerably less – from 1916-1928. Reportedly delivered new through Milledge Brothers of Melbourne, the circa-1927 example being auctioned by Shannons is one of the last of the 8-valve racers built, making it highly sought-after by collectors. It is a real ‘barnfind’, having been locked away in dry storage for much of the past 80 years and is believed to be one of only a handful of 8-valve Harley-Davidson racers worldwide to survive – especially in its condition and patina. These powerful bikes were deliberately priced out of the reach of private enthusiasts during their 12-year production lifetime and were only offered to up and coming racers of the times. They cost a whopping US$1,500 new at a time when even the most expensive bikes usually sold for no more than US$350. According to research by an early Harley expert, the bike being auctioned was last raced some time in the 1930s and competed in Victorian dirt track events before reportedly being put away afterwards. Its last resting place saw the bike untouched in a dry storage facility for over 40 years, ensuring it remained virtually untouched and unmodified from the end its racing days.

Entering its fourth-generation, the all-new Kia Sportage features a progressive design, with the vehicle’s designers creating a sense of power and agility from every angle. The ‘face’ of the all-new Sportage represents the biggest change to the car’s design, with the car’s headlamps no longer integrated with the grille for the new model, instead sweeping back along the outer edges of the more sharply-detailed bonnet and bolder wheel arches. Immediately recognisable as a Kia, the Sportage’s lower, wider ‘tiger-nose’ grille adds more volume to the lower half of the Sportage’s face, resulting in a more imposing appearance and a more stable-looking stance. The all-new Sportage is characterised by its sportier, more raked profile. From the side, the all-new Sportage retains the swept-back silhouette of the outgoing model, with a roofline that tapers slightly towards the rear of the car, longer front overhangs, shorter rear overhangs and longer wheelbase. Smooth bodywork, bolder wheel arches and sharp lines endow the Sportage with a more dynamic, muscular look. At the rear, the horizontal forms and surface volume emphasise the car’s width and give the compact SUV a more stable appearance. The design of the new Sportage has been led by Kia’s European design studio in Frankfurt, Germany, with input from the brand’s Namyang, Korea and Irvine, California design centres.

Infiniti Q30 The world premiere of the first ever Infiniti Q30 premium active compact is scheduled at this year’s International Motor Show at Frankfurt. The uniquely expressive exterior of the new Q30 creates a visual dynamism for the newest premium compact in the segment. Infiniti interior designers have selected highest quality materials and processes to create a premium modern ambiance. One tactile detail is the Dinamica suedelike material from Italy. Used increasingly in the highfashion industry, it now lines the roof and support pillars of the Q30 cabin. Driver and passenger seating have been constructed for enhanced comfort and support with an elevated hip-point, aiding the in-control sense that combines well with Q30’s sharp dynamics on city streets or country roads. Infiniti Motor Company Ltd. is headquartered in Hong Kong with sales operations in over 50 countries. The Infiniti brand was launched in 1989. Its range of premium automobiles is currently built in manufacturing facilities in Japan, the United States and China.

Land Rover’s see-through trailer Land Rover researchers have developed an innovative camera system that makes a trailer or caravan appear see-through when being towed The ‘Transparent Trailer’ removes the blind spot created when towing. It will make overtaking safer and help trailer manoeuvring by improving visibility The prototype ‘Transparent Trailer’ system fitted to a Range Rover combines the video feed from the vehicle’s existing surround camera system - which includes the reversing camera and a camera on each wing mirror - with a video from a digital wireless camera that is placed on the rear of the trailer or caravan. The video feeds are then combined to create the live video images that make the trailer behind appear see-through. When the trailer is coupled to the towing car, the live video feed would automatically appear in the rear view mirror inside the vehicle. When reversing, the driver would also be able to view the camera feed from the back of the caravan or trailer through the infotainment screen, with guidance lines calibrated to help reverse both car and trailer.
