Who would have thought that when Mary Coustas first appeared as the character that over twenty years later she’d still be playing to packed crowds? Coustas first came to prominence in the TV show ‘Acropolis Now’ which ran from 1989 to 1992 as the character of Effie Stephanidis, which led to many live shows, TV appearances and corporate gigs that have kept the 48 year old from Melbourne very busy. But what isn’t too well known about Coustas is that she is one smart cookie when it comes to the media, and with a Bachelor of Arts with a sub-major in journalism, its with a lot of knowledge that she has dealt with the media over the years. “I’m a bit of a magazine and newspaper junkie, and in terms of character development and writing it helps me a lot, particularly in the areas of structuring writing, plus it all helps when it comes to storytelling. I think it does give me a bit of an edge when dealing with media, I try to give them what they want and I can give them their angles as I know they are all trying to find something new” Mary said on the line from her Melbourne home. Mary has been in the news lately with the

release of her new book titled ‘All I Know’ which details event in her life where she’s had to deal with the loss of her father, her grandmother and her daughter Stevie. Putting pen to paper about the experience proved to be therapeutic for her. “I’d been writing about events in my life a long time before I started writing the book, and I’d covered things in that territory, like loss, grief, life, all that jazz, and the book was in the spirit of that writing. “I focused on the events that really shaped me and set me up to survive my ultimate challenge which was the death of my daughter. It was very therapeutic, as is any form of expression because its when we feel like we shouldn’t, can’t, or won’t, is when it becomes a bigger problem and for me it became a great outlet. I had an idea when I finished it that there might be other people who have walked not in exactly the same shoes, but have suffered through life…and its all about how you recover from that.” Ipswich Life asked Mary what its like living with a character for such a long time, and if you need to have two personalities as you go through life.

“I try not to intellectualize it too much, I just know this character so well, and I’ve never delved into such a private part of the character in this way. She’s literally up herself and knows what she wants from a man. She believes she’s worth it. “In this show she talks about her limited sexual past, and it justifies why she finds herself in the position she’s in and we’ve all been there at one point or another. Its like asking yourself Is that person above me? Are they beneath me?...and so on…once they get the idea of the premise the audience really relates to it and it is liberating for them to hear Effie talk about it so honestly, and makes you think what is going on under that big hair. “I think Effie is honest, she’s pretentious, and she represents our multicultural life. She’s unapologetic and very much the working class hero, she never apologizes for being from a different race or background. She’s an evocative character, and no, I never imagined that I’d be doing her twenty years later. “I do a lot of corporate work, and people like that ‘fish out of water’ character. Its challenging doing shows for people in suits in the middle of the day. They are there under a work premise,

EDITOR they have their own agendas, and there is the politics of any work environment. I’ve always worked with verbal audiences one way or another. I’m used to an uncultured audience, and I don’t mean that in a negative way, its about them going to see things that normally they wouldn’t relate to. Talking to Mary Coustas, the woman responsible for Effie was a heap of fun for us here in the Ipswich Life offices, as she represents our multiculturalism, and is a doyen of fashion. So its somewhat appropriate that we have Effie in our special ‘Ipswich Fashion’ issue, which has all the info on what is shaping up to be a massive event for the city, with markets, shows, and happenings galore. Its going to be a ton of fun! Also in this issue we share what its like to see a SuperHornet refuel in mid air, which is nothing short of amazing! We’ve got our usual giveaways including tickets to see Effie, tickets for The Johnny Cash Show, books and also a chance for our younger readers to meet Andy Griffiths, the no.1 kids author in the nation. But wait there’s more...all the news in Defence, Entertainment, Fashion, Food, Health and not to mention with many parents looking at schools this time of our year, our Education feature should prove invaluable to anyone looking to enrol their child in the future. Dave loves it LIVE

As a member on the new show ‘This Week Live’ Dave Thornton loves the fact that the show goes live to air on national tv. Yes, live. The show has received a positive response from TV viewers, and it is continuing a tradition of shows like Good News Week and The Project in presenting the week’s events through the eyes of comedians. Along with Tom Gleeson, Meshel Laurie and Tommy Little, comedian Dave Thornton has made a career from making people laugh, and was surprised how quickly the show all came together. “I got the gig as I assumed Grant Denyer was busy,” Thorton said from his home where he was furiously writing on his laptop. “Not really ‘rock n roll’ lifestyle is it? But yeah, ‘This Week Live’ all happened really quickly, the ideas came along and I was just asked to get involved. “I remember doing Good News Week, and I hope I’m not a bad omen. I did it once and they asked me to come back and then said ‘come and do it or never’, as it was finishing the next week. I then finally managed to get on ABC’s ‘Spicks and Specks’ only to be told it was the final season, I have the midas touch in reverse I think, but hopefully it stops there.” Thornton loves the mix of comedians assembled for the show, and thinks it’s a good fit for the show. “This is perfect for the four of us. We would be bad as extras in the diner on ‘Home & Away’ but for this kind of thing its spot on. We are all comedians so we know what to expect doing it live, and hopefully the audiences will be a bit more sober, maybe a little bit more giving. We know what it takes to be in front of a live crowd. “Ten have backed this up, and said they want to play to our strengths, maybe it could be a renaissance in live television... who knows? Its open slather with the writing, we have as much input as everyone else on the show. We’ve talked about the great strength that we can cover things that happened that day. If there is breaking news at 8.45 don’t expect us to do a ten minute segment on it. “We have talked about ‘The Project’ and the fact it goes to air first, they are information with a bit of comedy, but we want to be comedy first, with a bit of

information. I’d like to think that people see us as the douchebags that have stayed up a bit later to take the mickey out of the news. “Going on after ‘Offspring’ is a very ballsy move by Ten, its their highest rating show. I’ve worked with all these guys before in radio, or on tour, we all get along. Maybe I should make some stories up about that, that sounds really boring doesn’t it? Call me in a week or so and I’ll give you some dirt on them, like Tommy Little having an affair with Kim Kardashian, and how Tom Gleeson’s not the same since he had a kid…stuff like that.” Thornton once did a tour of the country under the title ‘I Am Bruce Lee’, and Ipswich Life was curious why. “Its simple…I want to be Bruce Lee! I never realised the influence that guy had, he did everything his own way, and I admire that. Here was an Asian guy who went to Hollywood and did everything on his own terms, and then he died so young. The only thing I’ll be remembered by is an outstanding debt to the bank. Do I believe the theory that Bruce Lee is alive? Well I reckon he’s playing backgammon with James Dean somewhere, or running a health regime where he’s trying to get Elvis to eat properly and do some lunges.” This Week Live airs Wednesday nights on TEN.

Smoking ban now permanent Cancer Council Queensland has applauded Mayor Paul Pisasale and Ipswich City Council for their commitment to permanently introduce smoking bans in public places which are now in effect. The council introduced an interim local law in February that banned smoking in malls, within four metres of bus stop signs and seats, and at taxi ranks. Fines for people who lit up in smokefree zones started from $110. Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift said the decision to make the interim law permanent from was a win for the health of every community member. “We applaud this decision made by Mayor Paul Pisasale and Ipswich City Council – they are leading by example and taking action for the public’s health,” Ms Clift said. “Not only will this ban protect non-smokers from the harmful effects of second-hand smoke, it may also support current smokers to quit. “Evidence shows that there are high levels of community support for smoking bans, and 80 per cent of adult smokers want to quit. “This permanent ban will protect people from the harmful effects of second-hand tobacco smoke, creating a more pleasant environment for shoppers, tourists, and retailers. “It will also help to reduce cigarette litter and further reduce the prevalence of smoking and prevent tobacco related disease, disability, and death in the future. “There is no safe level of smoking or passive smoking, and we commend Mayor Paul Pisasale and the Ipswich City Council for helping to create a healthier city heart.” It’s estimated around 3000 Queenslanders will die from a tobacco-related disease in 2013.

About 300 of these deaths will be caused by second-hand smoke exposure. Lung cancer is the most common cause of cancer-related death in both men and women in Queensland. More than 900 men and 600 women died from the disease in Queensland in 2009 alone. Current figures show 16.7 per cent of Queenslanders aged 14 years and over smoke daily. “We’re hopeful more local councils around the state will follow suit for the health of their entire community,” Ms Clift said. The interim local law from 1st February is now permanent. Smokers are no longer able to light up in pedestrian malls and at public transport waiting points in Ipswich. Smoking has been banned in Ipswich in the following locations: • At all taxi ranks, within 4 metres of any taxi rank sign; • Within 4 metres of any bus stop sign erected at the bus stop; • Within 4 metres of any bus stop seats; • The mall in Nicholas St, Ipswich, between Limestone and Brisbane streets; • The mall in Union St and; • The mall in Nicholas St, Ipswich, between Brisbane St and the north end of Nicholas St. Smokers can obtain free information, practical assistance and support from Quitline, 13 QUIT (13 7848), or join the QUEST to quit at www. cancerqld.org.au

Local motor dealers angry over changes to FBT rules Ipswich car dealers have had to work hard over the last few years, with more overseas competition in manufacturing, the Global Financial Crisis, and the increased cost of fuel, so the last thing they needed was planned changes to the Fringe Benefits Tax announced recently. In short, to help fund Prime Minister Kevin Rudd’s move from the carbon tax to an Emissions Trading Scheme, the Federal Government needs to find $1.8 billion. Currently the FBT means people can claim concessions of 20% of the cost of their car under a statuatory method, or an operational method based on the drivers personal use of the vehicle. The new rules will only allow the operational method, meaning anyone using the car has to keep a logbook, and it’s hit local dealers hard. Leasing companies, and many employees who would salary-sacrifice or purchase a car for company use, are getting cold feet, and the reaction was instant. Shadow Minister for Energy and Resources Ian Macfarlane visited local dealer Llewellyn’s, where he expressed his concern from a federal level at the effects this will have across the nation. “This is a rushed decision that won’t just hit families, it will also damage the economy, particularly those in the car industry. It is estimated that 35 per cent of all salary packaged vehicles are made by local manufacturers Toyota, Ford and Holden. “Most people, around 75% of drivers with salary packaged cars earn under $100,000 a year, and its going to cost them an average of $1400 a year. “If you are a sales rep with a company car, a nurse or a teacher with a salary-packaged vehicle then this decision is bad news for you and your family.” General Manager at Boettcher Motors, Greg Boettcher, said that he is concerned on the impact. “Times are tough as it is, and out of the blue this just happens which doesn’t help anyone. It’s a loss of confidence to an already struggling industry. “It’s not just the cost of buying a car, but maintaining that car. I believe people wont service or change their car as often due to this,” Mr Boettcher. Dealer Principal at Llewellyn Motors, Wade Llewellyn, saw an instant response to the

announcement, and it wasn’t one that inspired confidence. “The day it was announced we had twelve cancelled orders which is a full day’s trading out the window. We have to order cars six months in advance, and now those cars are sitting there due to cancelled orders. I have to pay interest on those vehicles, plus you have leasing companies which won’t take vehicles that are over three months old. “All of a sudden we just have to bear the cost of holding that stock and somehow get them out to the private market in the hope of selling them,” Mr Llewellyn said. LNP Candidate for Blair Teresa harind said that all the dealers she has spoken to are terribly frustrated. “These are working families that this is going to hit, and the dealers are just frustrated with the lack of consultation.” Caption: Theresa Harding (LNP Candidate for Blair), Greg Boettcher, Ian Macfarlane, Llewellyn’s James Sturges and Motor Traders Association General Manager Kellie Dewar show a united front against the FBT changes.

Ecco Ripley underway Motorists driving along Ripley Road of late, would have noticed the huge amount of roadworks going on. It’s all due to work being well underway on the Ecco Ripley project, a major project by Japanese builder Sekisui House. Civil Contractors’ bulldozers and excavators have been onsite for several weeks preparing the site. Sekisui House representatives brought Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale to inspect the onsite works recently, and he was happy to see major work finally underway on what is destined to be one of the largest residential developments in Queensland. “This is start of the next chapter of our journey after many years of master planning, and will deliver a model community for others to follow,” Cr Pisasale said. “It’s great to be on site to witness the bulldozers and excavators in full force on the road upgrade, which paves the way for the delivery of the Ripley Valley master plan. “Ecco Ripley will create new jobs, boost the local economy and provide people with a variety of home and lifestyle choices. “Ripley Valley has long been earmarked as a key growth corridor in South East Queensland, with Ecco Ripley as the first residential development to be delivered in the corridor.” With a federal election looming, the Mayor took reminded politicains in Canberra that money needs to go to where there is growth.

“We are not a marginal seat any more. This is an area that wants to be developed,” he said. “Show some leadership and put money in growth areas. We need is the dollars to make sure the infrastructure is done properly.” Sekisui House Project Director Craig D’Costa said the progress of major civil works on site meant ECCO Ripley was on track to deliver a great community to Ripley Valley. “The Ripley Road upgrade is the first step towards achieving the vision for our development which is to create a community that is full of life achieved through the perfect harmony of individuals, communities and the environment,” Mr D’Costa said. The road upgrade will be completed in October, with further construction works scheduled to commence on the first residential stage, consisting of around 100 new properties and 3 hectares of recreational parkland. The development will be open to registrations of interest from late 2013 with the first land release available to purchase in Stage 1 from second quarter 2014. Sekisui House is master planning 194 hectares within the new urban release area in the Ripley Valley, which will include a vibrant retail and commercial town and approximately 4,000 dwellings. Upon completion of these works, Sekisui

Ask Sally WEIGHT LOSS QUESTIONS ANSWERED Our regular weight loss columnist, Sally is here to help with any questions you may have about how to lose weight, and more importantly how to keep it off. You can read more about Sally at www. sallysymonds.com.au. Email your questions to darren@ strikepublications.com.au and each issue we’ll put the best ones to Sally. Sarah M from Karalee asks: What do you think of low-fat diets? I am constantly choosing ‘low fat’ options but i’m not losing much weight. HELP! In general, I am not a fan of any diet. Consider the first three letters of ‘diet’—D I E. This pretty much sums up how I feel about them. As someone who’s lost over 50 kilos without using any plans or programs, and kept it off for ten years, I’m living proof that diets don’t work. (Then, of course, there’s also the fact that 96% of people who lose weight following a diet regain it all again — and more — within two years). Have you ever wondered why weight loss companies only publish data about weight lost over a short period of time? It’s because, 98% of the time, diets don’t work long term. Diets are the essence of restriction and deprivation. A typical diet tells you to avoid certain foods, which inevitably causes you to want exactly those foods. Humans like the freedom to make our own decisions, so as soon as this is taken away from us, we only put up for it for so long. Then instead of having a sliver of chocolate cake, we have the whole cake. Anyone who takes their first small step towards a diet is actually making one giant leap towards a yo-yo dieting cycle that can ruin her metabolism and mindset. Your weight is your responsibility and the only person who is an expert in your own life is YOU! Diets are temporary—but healthy living lasts forever!

Ipswich Golf Course is on target to reopen following its recent closure after going into receivership. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale has worked hand in hand with Bank Of Queensland and administrators BDO to help facilitate the reopening. Under the terms of the agreement, Ipswich Sports House will take responsibility for the course’s equipment shop and sports management and the receivers and managers from BDO, acting on behalf of BOQ, will take responsibility for the club house and other business operations, including the course. Cr Pisasale said this deal would mean the long-established course can reopen for the enjoyment of local golfers and visitors. “Permanent closure would have left Ipswich without its namesake public golf course, an unthinkable situation given the long history of the sport in Ipswich. “This the start of a new chapter, one that sets the course on the road to financial stability and renewed growth in membership. “The next step is for golfers to dust off their clubs and tee off. “I’m urging the community and to everyone in South East Queensland to make use of this tremendous course. The golf club

needs your support. “Golf is a rewarding game; it’s mentally challenging and a top way to increase your physical activity. “So if you’re a golf nut like me or if you’ve never swung a club before, Ipswich Golf Course is a great choice. “Anything in Ipswich to be successful, has to have community support behind it. It needs the support of the people. The Bank of Queensland were the first on my door to say they wanted to do what they could to help the Ipswich Golf Club. I love getting emails that say ‘we are here to help’. “This temporary ongoing arrangement will be in place until a buyer can be found to operate the club permanently.” A Bank of Queensland spokesperson said that in the long term, it is hoped the club can find a suitable owner. “Obviously there were issues at the club and while we look for a suitable purchaser we can keep the club open and hopefully find a buyer. It’s an asset that needs to be looked after.” Caption: Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale gets set to tee off with Marty Branigan from Bank of Queensland at Winston Glades.

Gotta love lamb

We’re not huge in the omnivore department here but a little while ago our freezer was filled with organic lamb from a friend’s family farm. The flavour of the organic lamb certainly cannot be beat but dare I complain, sometimes I feel that if I have to look at another chop, I’ll have kittens (or lamb in this case?!?). But it’s recipes like this that come to the rescue. You can also substitute the lamb chops with other cuts of meat. The Recipe Preparation Time: 10 Minutes Cooking Time: 2 hours Serves 4-6 Ingredients 1½ tbsp olive oil 1kg lamp chops 1tbsp flour, seasoned with salt and pepper I medium onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, crushed 2 medium carrots, thickly sliced 4 medium potatoes, thickly sliced 1 stick celery sliced 2 sprigs of rosemary 1 litre of quality stock 400g diced tomatoes Method Heat 1 tablespoon of the olive oil in a large saucepan. Take your lamb chops and coat in the seasoned flour. Brown your chops lightly on either side and place on a plate. Then add the last of the oil and vegetables. Cook for approximately 5 minutes or until they soften, over a low heat. Return the meat to the saucepan and add the remaining ingredients. Once your saucepan of goodness comes to the boil, simmer for 1 hour with the lid on. Continue for another hour with the saucepan only partially covered, allowing the liquid to evaporate and the sauce to thicken. Remove the chops from the stew and slice off the bone. Slice the chops into large chunks, return to the pot and gently stir through. I serve with a sliced, freshly baked, crusty loaf of bread.

It’s going to be great!” Vanessa Hoe is a leading fashion designer who after running several retail outlets concentrates on meeting demand at her business ‘When Freddie Met Lilly’. “I had a bit of flair for fashion and I’m a bit of a risk taker,” Vanessa said. “I became a state manager for a jeans company which taught me a lot, and when I moved to Melbourne I worked for a company that expanded from two stores to nine, and being in the heart of Melbourne that taught me a lot. “When I came back to Brisbane I did a lot of research, and where the young people go is where you follow if you want to succeed. “I’ve noticed men have got into fashion more over the years, which is awesome. Online is still going to be evermore present, it all comes down to dollars, so you have to be price conscious. Now I trade from a single showroom and by appointment only, covering formal and bridal wear, so I’ve changed my business structure as formalwear is booming. “I design from feel, from colours, what people are looking for, I find the piece that I like and hope that other people like it. If I was to choose colours to represent Queensland I think of yellows, brights, plus corals for the girls. I’m really looking forward to getting to Ipswich for the Fashion Festival, it should be a heap of fun!” For Student Design application

St Peters opens new kindy in Springfield Greater Springfield has new kindergarten, with the official opening of the St Peters Lutheran Kindergarten by the Minister for Education, Training & Employment, John-Paul Langbroek, although the kindy began its first intake in February this year. The Minister said that early childhood education was so important. “Until a few years ago we had a small number of children attending kindergarten in Queensland. “We have all learnt and know the importance of education in the early years. In our Prep years now teachers are surprised how much work our ‘preppies’ can do, in terms of language and development so there’s been a focus of all politicians on the importance of the early years of education. “We are looking at progressing the next education agreement, which something the States are working very hard with the Federal Government,” he said. “We all want the best educational opportunities for our children, and the Government is certainly supportive of that.” Principal, Jill Lange-Mohr said that the addition of the kindergarten to St Peters College allowed parents flexibility in their

choices about educating their children. “St Peters has not been involved previously in this sector of education so we are pioneering this in our school at Springfield,” Ms Lange-Mohr said. “For parents and particularly the children it offers this seamless Kindy through to Year 12 opportunity at the one school, which is a 14year program if they choose to stay that time with us. “Parents love simplicity, they don’t want to be dropping children off at different schools, so we do offer them a one-stop option for their children’s education.” The Springfield campus maintains strong connections with St Peters at Indooroopilly.

“We have the same College Council, the same uniform, and the same head of college,” Ms Lange-Mohr said. “The idea of a kindergarten at Springfield was envisaged as part of the strategic plan for the college back in 2006, but never in our wildest dreams did we expect to get that phone call advising that there was significant funding available from the Queensland Government for the building. It was a marvellous day, to have our dream become a reality.”

Construction to bring NBN to more local homes Construction has commenced to bring the NBN to more households in and around Bundamba and Springfield.

workers locally doing the detailed planning and inspection work, and then rolling out the fibre.

We have recently seen the release of detailed maps by NBN Co, showing where further construction of the National Broadband Network (NBN) will start.

What’s more, NBN retail services are available for similar prices to what people are paying now, but for a much superior service.

The maps shows that more NBN fibre is being rolled out in and around Bundamba and Springfield, which will allow more residents access to faster, affordable and more reliable broadband.

From seeing your local doctor from home, to your kids being able to take a specialist class at another school – the NBN will change the way we live, work, and access services. It will lead to a new wave of innovation, and I’m delighted that people in the Ipswich region will be among the first to benefit.

The maps indicated the NBN roll out to include Bundamba, Ebbw Vale, New Chum, Collingwood Park, Riverview, Redbank Plains, Bellbird Park, Augustine Heights, Springfield and parts of Springfield Lakes.

Under the Liberals you will have to pay up to $5,000 to connect NBN fibre to your home - or you’re left disconnected.

Labor is building the NBN for all Australians. But the Coalition is planning a digital divide in every suburb and town across Australia, denying access to Labor’s fibre network for millions of people.

Local families and students set to benefit from indexation increases Local families will have received a boost to their family payments in July this year.

• $91.25 a year where the youngest child is aged between five and 18, to $3,069.65 a year, including a Clean Energy Supplement of $51.10.

About 14,634 local families are receiving higher payments from Federal Labor to help them make ends meet.

In addition, about 2,521 local students and young people in training will have received their second lump sum Clean Energy Advance payment from early July, worth up to $130, before receiving their regular Clean Energy Supplement from January 2014.

This is a result of indexation and the new Clean Energy Supplement, which is part of Labor’s Household Assistance Package. The Household Assistance Package is delivering higher payments and tax cuts to thousands of locals, helping them keep up with their bills and meet the modest impacts of the carbon price. From 1 July the maximum rates of Family Tax Benefit Part A increased by: • $153.30 a year per child under 13, to $5,303.45 a year, including a Clean Energy Supplement of $87.60; • $200.75 a year per child aged between 13 and 15, to $6,679.50 a year, including a Clean Energy Supplement of $113.15; and • $200.75 a year per child aged between 16 and 19 attending school, to $6,679.50 a year, including a Clean Energy Supplement of $113.15. The rate of Family Tax Benefit Part B also increased by: • $124.10 a year where the youngest child is aged under five, to $4,241.30 a year, including a Clean Energy Supplement of $69.35; and

Federal Labor is delivering record levels of assistance to low and middle income families in Ipswich and the Somerset region. Our support includes Australia’s first national Paid Parental Leave scheme, and increase to the Child Care Rebate and the Schoolkids Bonus. Tony Abbott likes to say he supports families, but the fact is he voted against the Household Assistance Package. He is also promising to axe the Schoolkids Bonus, which is helping thousands of local families with the costs of getting their kids through school. And his unfair and costly paid parental leave policy will drive up prices at the supermarket, hurting all families. Only Labor is standing up for families in Ipswich and the Somerset Region.

a not-for-profit organisation. Volunteers are the lifeblood of our communities, but the increasing financial strains on volunteer groups makes it difficult for them to deliver the important services they provide to our community every day. This is just one way the Rudd Labor Government supports the selfless work and commitment of Ipswich and Somerset Region volunteers.

This funding is up from the 2012 funding round, where 55 local organisations shared in $195,779. In Australia, more than six million people volunteer each year. Sporting Champions to receive grants Young athletes from Ipswich and the Somerset Region have benefited from the Federal Labor Government’s Local Sporting Champions grants to help them realise their sporting dreams and compete in a championship.

Individual athletes and teams who are participating in appropriately endorsed state school sport championships or international competitions are now also eligible to apply for support. I encourage parents, coaches and junior athletes to apply for a Local Sporting Champions grant to help them meet the costs of their involvement in a sporting championship.

I recently hosted an afternoon tea and was delighted to meet and chat to these young sporting champs. Recipients in this round are: Nathan Schulte, Sophie Stevens, Riley Aufai, Indira Jorgensen, Sean Haley, Dale Kim, Kyle Jackson, Rochelle Vidler, Bronte Borg, Alyssa McDougall, Kaleb Welfare, Shar Walden, Kaitlyn Morris, Maddison Cooke, Tahlia Condon, Levi Cathcart, each of whom have received $500 and Ipswich Force Under 14 Girls Basketball

team (pictured) who receive a total of $3,000 to assist with expenses associated with playing sport at a national level. The Federal Labor Government’s Local Sporting Champions program is aimed at helping our junior sport stars to meet the costs of participation at eligible sporting competitions.

Local junior athletes can apply for a grant to cover the cost of their travel, accommodation, uniforms or equipment associated with participating in an eligible championship. The Federal Labor Government is committed to promoting participation in sport and providing support to boost our community sporting programs.

Another $568,000 for our local Councils

The Local Sporting Champions program offers grants of $500 for individuals and $3000 for teams and applications for round two close on October 31st 2013. For more information on the Local Sporting Champions program visit the Australian Sports Commission website: www.ausport.gov.au/champions or contact my office on 3201 5300.

Lowood veterans benefit from funding support Lowood RSL Sub-Branch have received increased Federal Government funding because of the increase in their workload. The additional funding will assist Lowood RSL Sub-Branch continue their important work with the local veteran community. Lowood RSL will receive $37,962 under the Building Excellence in Support and Training (BEST) grants program – that is almost six time the funding they received last year. The additional funding recognises the significant increase in work load and higher expenses.

Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann has welcomed the allocation of $568,000 in Federal funds to the Ipswich City and Somerset Regional Councils.

sustainable which will come from the Liveable Cities program.

This additional funding for community infrastructure is important to make our growing region an even better place to live, is very welcome.

It comes on top of funding provided to the Ipswich and Somerset Regional Councils, including: • $53,411,655 in Financial Assistance Grants; • over $2 million allocated for Roads to Recovery ($9.8 million from 2009 to 2014); • and about $20 million in regional and community development infrastructure projects.

The funding can be used to build and renew community infrastructure like sporting facilities, libraries, town halls, playgrounds and essential community services such as child care facilities. Importantly it will go towards shovel-ready projects that will allow the Ipswich and Somerset Regional Councils to generate new economic activity and jobs, while delivering infrastructure now and for the future. In June, the Federal Labor Government announced that it will provide $150 million to be shared between all local councils and shires across Australia to help build and renew community infrastructure, as round five of the Regional Development Australia funding. The Ipswich City Council will receive $349,000 and the Somerset Regional Council will receive $219,000. Around 70 per cent, or $105 million, of the total funding will be directed to rural and regional councils and will come from the Regional Development Australia Fund. Urban councils will share $45 million for local infrastructure to help make our cities more productive, liveable and 18 IPSWICHLIFE

This funding is part of our plan for jobs and growth in regional and local communities.

Mr Neumann said the Federal Labor Government had provided opportunities for the local region to develop some exciting assets, including: • Robelle Domain Parklands at Springfield • Bob Gamble water park (Ipswich) • Studio 188 (the old Baptist Church) • Ipswich Civic Centre upgrade • Corporate Centre at North Ipswich Reserve • George Alder Tennis Centre in Ipswich • Ipswich Basketball Stadium upgrade • Redbank Plains Reserve upgrade • The Somerset Civic Centre • Fernvale Indoor Sports Centre • Kilcoy Showgrounds upgrade • Toogoolawah Condensery arts project • Kilcoy Futures Project at Yowie Park • Esk and Kilcoy Skate Parks Guidelines for this Regional Development funding round can be viewed on the Department of Regional Australia website.

BEST grants assist the largely voluntary ex-service organisations (ESO) workforce to help the veteran and Defence communities, and their families, access Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) entitlements and services.

Changes to indexation of military superannuation payments The Federal Labor Government has announced changes to the way in which military superannuation retirement pay will be indexed for the Defence Forces Retirement Benefits (DFRB) scheme and the Defence Force Retirement and Death Benefits (DFRDB) scheme. The schemes were closed in 1972 and 1991, respectively. From 1 July 2014, payments to military superannuants aged 65 and over, within the DFRB and DFRDB schemes, will be indexed to the higher of the Consumer Price Index (CPI) or the Pensioner and Beneficiary Living Cost Index (PBLCI). This measure strikes the right balance by assisting many of our older military retirees while being fiscally responsible in the current economic climate. The estimated cost over four years is $34 million. There are some 56,500 superannuants in the two schemes across the nation and approximately 26,700 are aged 65 and over who will benefit from this announcement. I want to acknowledge the advocacy of ex-service organisations on this issue and in particular the Returned and Services League of Australia and the Defence Force Welfare Association. I’ve met with local RSL members and many military superannuants over the years and have advocated on their behalf with my Ministerial colleagues.

I want to congratulate the Lowood RSL Sub-Branch and its members for their commitment to the local veteran community.

PBLCI was first used as an indexation factor for the age pension in September 2009 and the Government has decided to include it in the indexation of military superannuation retirement pay for the two schemes.

The Federal Labor Government is proud to provide ongoing support for the veterans, war widows and widowers, current serving Australian Defence Force personnel, and their families living in the region.

This announcement builds on a comprehensive program of support and recognition by the Labor Government for our veteran community since 2007.

Overall 135 organisations will share in a total of $2.788 million in funding allocated in BEST Round 15. For more information on BEST grants visit www.dva.gov.au/grants.

The Government will continue its commitment to engage with service and ex-service organisations to consider the benefits and support available to our current and former service personnel.

Grammar GREEN Established at IGGS Passers by would have noticed recent changes happening at Ipswich Girls’ Grammar, to the front of the School, on the corner of Queen Victoria Parade and Chermside Road. A Grammar Green has been established, as a result, in part, of the fundraising efforts made in the School’s 120th year in 2012. The Grammar Green replaced a staff car park, and is now an area that can be utilised by the students in their lunch breaks and after school.

The Avenue of Trees has also been replanted, as part of the 120th Birthday celebrations. It is hoped that once the trees are established, they will be similar to those that graced the driveway for many years, whilst thousands of past IGGS students attended the School. The photos show before and after shots of the Grammar Green, as well as the original Avenue of Trees. IGGS is appreciative of the support received during the 120 campaign.

Tree planting day at St Augustine On a bright, sunny Friday afternoon, close to 500 students of St Augustine’s College planted 510 trees in a designated area of the college’s top oval. The ‘Tree Planting Day’ event was a joint collaboration between Australand and St Augustine’s College to celebrate ‘Planet Ark’s School Tree Day’. Throughout the day, students from Prep to Year 5 took turns in planting, watering & mulching the new plants. In addition, some of the Year 5 students also assisted Australand staff in assembling three wooden benches to complete the new garden setting. “The long-term aim is that these trees, when mature, will provide shaded areas from which we will be able to watch sporting events,” Elizabeth Lee, Head of School for Early, Junior and Middle Years, stated. This event, sponsored entirely by Australand, was led by Andrew Bradford, Project Manager of Australand Property Group, currently based at The Springs Estate at the corner of Santa Monica Drive and Leon Capra Drive (across the road from St Augustine’s College). Andrew thanked GW Civil Contracting Pty Ltd and TLCC Pty Ltd for their kind donations of time, machinery and plants. Leon Capra, Principal of St

Augustine’s College commented, “this has been a great experience for our students to get outside and be part of this Planet Ark Tree Planting initiative. Recently, they have seen many trees removed to make way for construction of new buildings on our College so it’s a great learning for them to see how important it is to replace the trees we remove.” Planet Ark’s National Tree Day and Schools Tree Day provide all Australians with an opportunity to do something positive for the environment and reconnect with nature. Planet Ark works with councils, schools and community groups all over Australia to make it all happen. Below: Year 5 students Ella Schwarten, Phoebe Jackson and Katelyn Clark planting a tree.

St Mary’s College turns 150 In 1863 a group of intrepid Sisters of Mercy crossed the world and sailed up the Bremer River to establish Catholic education in Ipswich. After 150 years, the Mercy tradition is still alive and flourishing on the site where it all began. The Sisters of Mercy, together with the local parishioners and clergy of 1863, provided the vision and hard work that today is celebrated as part of our story today. Our priority is to offer a holistic education that is values based and life-giving, to ensure that each secondary student has the opportunity to achieve to her potential and be a woman of integrity. Our education prepares young women to be active global citizens with the skills, confidence and resilience to live life to the full and make a difference in an ever-changing world. Catherine McAuley once said there was no greater work which was more productive of good to society or more conducive to the happiness of the poor, than the education of women. She said regardless of their destination, a woman’s example and advice would always possess influence. The Mercy charism has flowed through many generations and today continues to inspire members of the college community to perform ordinary things, extraordinarily well.

Favourite Johnny Cash Songs

Baz Luhrmann’s (below) Strictly Ballroom is headed for the stage. The 1992 movie, which launched the career of one of Australia’s most successful director, is being adapted into a stage musical in 2014. The original movie was a major hit at the 1992 Australian Film Institute Awards (AFI’s), gaining 13 nominations and winning in eight categories.

Daniel Thompson has made a career of performing as Johnny Cash, so we asked him what his favourite Cash songs are. See our Giveaways page to find out how to win a double pass to see his show on Aug 31. 1. I Walk the Line Johnny Cash at his best. Classic, simple and very clever. Lyrically great and musically brilliant. I can’t think of any other song where each verse is sung in a lower key than the previous verse. 2. Hurt I believe Hurt is one of the main reasons for his continuing popularity. The next generation of fans have found Cash’s music through this Nine Inch Nails song. 3. Ring of Fire Unlike anything he had recorded previously. It was one of Cash’s first international hits and remains a fan favourite. 4. Man in Black There are 8 verses in this song and every line is significant in some way to Cash’s beliefs and things he stood for and fought for. 5. A Boy Named Sue 10 verses of brilliance written by song writing legend Shel Silverstein. Everything about this song, from the lyrical content to the original recording, is brilliant.

James Cameron has confirmed there will be three sequels to 2009 film Avatar (below). The sequels will be filmed simultaneously with film releases in December 2016, 2017, and 2018. Cameron said: “In writing the new films, I’ve come to realize that ‘Avatar’s’ world, story and characters have become even richer than I anticipated, and it became apparent that two films would not be enough to capture everything I wanted to put on screen.” Avatar still holds the record of highest-grossing movie after taking $2.8 billion at the box office worldwide.

After a tumultuous time on the set of American Idol, it’s been confirmed that Australian Keith Urban (above) is keeping his seat for the next season. No word on who will fill the spots of Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj and Randy Jackson.

Lady Gaga announced details of her next album ARTPOP – She’ll be premeiring the first single Applause at the MTV Video Awards in August. She tweeted that the upcoming album also comes with an interactive app (for android and IOS). Artpop is expected the be released in November.

Ellen DeGeneres (below) has been invited to host the Oscars for a 2nd time in 2014. It must be a busy time for Ellen, hosting her daily talk show, voicing Dory for the upcoming Finding Dory movie and planning her Oscars routine.

Angelina Jolie (above) has topped the list of Hollywood’s highest earning actresses for the last financial year. Frankly it’s pathetic how much we’ve all missed each other. A new chapter in the lives of the Inbetweeners feels like the very least we can do to thank the fans for their phenomenal response to the first movie.” Released in 2011, The Inbetweeners Movie became the highest-grossing comedy in UK box office history with takings of £45million.

Buying a bed is a big choice Buying a mattress can be confusing, but at Beds R Us buying a bed is easy, so follow this simple guide to help you make the right choice. Size does matter. Is the bed big enough for you and your partner? Ergonomic research has confirmed that couples sleep better in bigger beds. Part of being comfortable in bed is making sure you have enough room to spread out. You should buy the biggest bed that fits your budget and your bedroom. Seek support. Correct support is vital to healthy sleep. A good mattress and foundation will gently support your body at all points to keep your spine in the same position as good standing posture — whether you’re lying on your back or side. Choose comfort. Comfort is just as important as support in a mattress. After all, you can’t truly relax and have a peaceful, restful sleep if you aren’t completely comfortable. You can have both. Support comes from the innerspring unit and the comfort level comes from the type of padding. You can choose from softer or firmer comfort layers

while being sure you have good support at the same time. It all depends on your personal comfort level. Be selfish. When you share your bed with a partner, you don’t want to be affected by their every turn and shift in the night. Find a bed which allows you both independence of movement so that your side of the bed doesn’t bounce and creak every time your sleeping partner moves. Quality counts. The old rule of “you get what you pay for” applies to beds as in everything else. If you scrimp and buy a poor quality bed now, you may be paying later in terms of lost sleep. Shop for the best value, not the lowest price. You spend 26 years of your life in bed so buying the best bed you can afford is a healthy investment in your lifestyle. DEFENCE BY DARREN HALLESY

Supersonic jets fill up at a ‘Servo’ in the sky It’s not every day you get the chance to see a thing of technological beauty, but thanks to 33 Squadron and RAAF Amberley, Ipswich Life got the chance to get up close and personal with the famous Super Hornets - to witness four aircraft be refuelled in mid-air from inside the KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport – a heavily modified Airbus A330-200, the type flown on many air routes by Qantas. The air refuelling exercise involved taking off from RAAF Base Amberley and after a short transit circling over the Redcliffe peninsula, waiting for the ‘customers’ to arrive. We didn’t have to wait long, as four F/A-18F Super Hornets appeared on our wingtip ready for the hookup. Over the next two hours each jet would fly up alongside the KC-30A and refuel in mid air. Seeing the Hornets fly in an arc and pull up alongside is an amazing sight. It’s only when seeing them in flight that you can appreciate the power and speed of these incredible fighter jets. Up front of the KC-30, behind the two-pilot crew, sit two operators, ‘armed’ with multiple camera angles and indicators that show the position of the jets behind the KC-30. They release the hose-and-drogue, which flows out from under the left wing. The drogue ‘basket’ is the aim point for the Super Hornet pilot flying behind the aircraft. The pilot drops back his airspeed to match that of the KC-30, then moves up to catch the basket and connect, allowing fuel to flow into the jet’s probe and into its fuel tanks. One of the operators monitors the cameras on the boom. Wearing special 3D glasses, they can gauge not only sight but also depth, which gives them a perfect real-time view of the approaching fighter jets. While the Hornets can carry up to five external fuel tanks, it’s rare that they would have to fly in this heavyweight configuration, which also limits weapons that can be carried. This is where the KC-30A enables the Super Hornet to fly in tactical configuration, extending its range through air refuelling. The KC-30A has a multi-mission capability, able to carry 270 passengers and up to eight military pallets in its lower cargo bay. While it has no additional fuel tanks onboard, there is enough volume in the wing fuel tanks to offload to the fighters without affecting its long distance capability. The KC-30 simply shares its own fuel. With the hose-and-drogue system there is no manual lock system. The drogue automatically locks onto the receiving aircraft’s probe, and similarly unlocks when the jet decreases speed to release. Witnessing four aircraft practise this manoeveur was 26 IPSWICHLIFE

fascinating. Seeing them at the same speed, seemingly suspended in mid-air denies perception of speed. While pilots of the Super Hornets practise on simulators, there really is no substitute for the real thing, and all four runs went off without a hitch, even though turbulence made the hose move around a bit. All pilots caught the boom within three attempts. One KC-30A can support the deployment of four fighters over 5000 kilometres, with 50 personnel and 12 tonnes of equipment onboard. The KC-30 can remain on station to supply fuel up to 1800 kilometres from its base: for two hours with 65 tonnes of fuel, or up to four hours with 50 tonnes of fuel. With a range of 14,800km it’s an aircraft built for long transits, and long service. Add into that the refuelling function, and it is fast becoming a vital part of equipment for the RAAF. All I know, from this civilian’s perspective, is that seeing those machines refuel in mid-air is probably the most amazing, beautiful and exciting trips to the ‘servo’ that I’ll ever make. Thanks to the RAAF for the invite to witness something I’ll never forget. Above and left: RAAF F/A-18F Super Hornets take on fuel from a KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker aircraft. Below: Boom operator TSGT Lyndsay Moon of the US Air Force at his station onboard the KC-30A.

DEFENCE

KC-130 air refueller still strong after 50 years of operations When the KC-130 Stratotanker first entered US Air Force service in 1957 few would have expected the air refueller to still be the mainstay of tanker support for USAF aircraft in this modern era of stealth fighters. The longevity of the KC-130 is attributed to its great reliability and upgrades over the years. In Australia for Exercise Tasman Saber, KC-130s of the 909th Air Refuelling Squadron based out of Kadena Air Base in Japan are refuelling US Air Force aircraft participating in the exercise. The KC-130 is cleared to refuel RAAF F/A-18F Super Hornets but for this exercise those jets are being refuelled by the RAAF’s newest aircraft type, the KC-30A MultiRole Tanker Transport of 33 Squadron based at RAAF Amberley. Based on the 1950s vintage Boeing B707 passenger jet, the KC-130 inventory totals an impressive 660 airframes flown by Air Mobility Command and Air National Guard squadrons.

This Cold War motivated capability was originally designed to refuel B-52 bombers that could be called upon at a moment’s notice to conduct intercontinental bombing missions. Later, the very jets in Australia at present would probably have refuelled F-4 Phantom and F-105 Thunderchief fighters during missions over North Vietnam in the 1960s and 1970s. One pilot flying the KC-130 during Tasman Saber is Lieutenant Jake Kress who is much younger than the aircraft he flies. Jake comes from a military family, and his father flies F/A18 Hornets with the US Marine Corps. “I’ve not had the opportunity to refuel my father’s jet as yet, but I’m looking forward to that day,” Jake said. So, what is it about the KC-130 that has allowed it to endure all this time. Well, for a start, it has averaged over 90 per cent availability over many years. “The aircraft is mix of things from different eras, so some things look rather worn such as the original flight controls and instruments, while other things look new hi-tech, such as the ‘glass’ cockpit avionics displays,” Jake said. “The biggest upgrade has been the upgraded engines, with a lot more thrust, so we can carry more fuel and fly longer missions, and it’s better for the environment. “We can refuel every aircraft type in the US that can accept fuel: all the fighters and

bombers plus transports, even some other tanker aircraft, so it’s a very versatile aircraft.” A new tanker is being developed for the US Air Force following an all-out battle between the Boeing Company and the European company EADS. Boeing eventually prevailed and will provide a new air refueller type, the KC-46A, based on the Boeing 767 airframe. For pilots such as Lieutenant Kress the new air refueller will be great, provided it matches the reliability of the KC-130 and brings a modern aircraft type into the heavy lift inventory.

Clockwise from top: Lieutenant Jake Kress in the cockpit of a KC-130 at RAAF Amberley facing a RAAF C-17 airlifter. A Cold War era B-52 bomber being refueled by a KC-130. F-4 Phantoms being refueled by a KC-130 during the Vietnam War.

DEFENCE BY JOHN ARMSTRONG

RAAF and USAF C-17s fly airdrops over ‘the Bay’ C-17A Globemasters of the US Air Force and the RAAF flew their first combined airdrop over the Shoalwater Bay Training Area, demonstrating a coalition approach to airlift tasking. In fact, the flight is probably a world first for C-17s of different air forces flying a combined mission. Two USAF C-17s and one from the RAAF’s 36 Squadron took off from RAAF Base Amberley during Exercise Tasman Saber. After a onehour transit to the drop zone the three C-17s descended to low level, and in trail formation lined up for the parachute-extracted drop, aiming for a precision impact of the load on the cleared area of the drop zone. With minutes to run, the huge rear ramp of the C-17, which is about the same size as the whole floor area of a C-130 aircraft, is lowered to horizontal position and loadmasters make the final preparations for the extraction sequence. Over the target area the sequence begins, with the parachutes deployed first, then the load is given a push to the edge, toppling off the ramp and falling as the parachutes open and slow its descent to earth – all in a matter of seconds. With Tasman Saber winding down, it’s time to assess the value of the exercise to units of the ADF and its US ally. For the C-17 squadrons the major objective was to operate together to practise for future tasking such as humanitarian aid during emergencies. Major Wesley Lewis-McChord, Air Mission Planner for Tasman Saber, said that differences in the way USAF and RAAF C-17 squadrons operate, with different air traffic control procedures and the like, could be sorted out during training so that they don’t become issues during real-world operations. Earlier, the USAF C-17s conducted a mass airdrop with five C-17s. “We all prepositioned in Alaska, took off and somewhere in the middle of the Pacific Ocean came together to meet up with five KC-10s from Travis Air Base and did five-on-five air refuelling,” the Major said. “This required a lot of planning and coordination to make it work. “Onboard we had about 400 paratroopers from the US Army Airborne Division out of Alaska, ready for a max-drop over the Shoalwater Bay Training Area. This was the major airdrop activity for Talisman Saber.

“The majority of the mission planning was done by the Australians, which was great because they know how to plan low-levels in their country, talk to the different agencies, and generally how to get us in the air. It was enormously helpful for us.” Clockwise from top: A C-17A loadmaster dispatches a load, extracted by parachute at low level over the Shoalwater Bay area. PROPERTY & FINANCE BY MARK BOURIS

Life stages, and superannuation Aged 35 to 45: You should be paying down a mortgage fast, taking advantage of low interest rates to increase home equity and get ahead of the payment schedule. You should be paying more attention to your superannuation, and keep your investments in ‘growth’ and weighted to equities. Aged 45 to 55: Makeadditional contributions to your nest egg, taking advantage of tax benefits for salary sacrificing to super. Make eliminating all debt a priority. Aged 55 to 65: You should shift the majority of your investment to preservation assets — cash, fixed income – and use your working years to increase contributions to super. Consider a strategy for “transition to retirement” which includes a capital preservation strategy. Of course, life stages are not definitive on their own. But alongside your risk profile, your goals and your savings strategy, they become useful ways of ensuring your actual life is catered for.

People confused about superannuation often ask me how they can make the right decisions about their retirement savings. What you should be aiming for is to be able to create an income in retirement that covers around 75 per cent of your working life income. Even then, the mix depends on whether you retire as a couple, retire owning your own home, and how much investment risk you can bear in retirement. Most retirement strategies are technical and financial. And so they should be. But retirement savers also need to get their own personality into the strategy. With life stages comes decisions/priorities. Aged 25 to 35: You’re in an accumulation phase, take advantage of higher disposable income and fewer family-related expenses. should tend towards ‘aggressive’ asset allocations. Why? You’re young enough to weather downturns in share markets and benefit from long term gains.

What does your property add to the Economy? WITH GEOFF GILES, REALWAY PROPERTY CONSULTANTS

You would be amazed what your property value does for our overall economy. Australia’s wealth is truly underpinned by Real Estate. Here are just a few little figures and facts that may astound you. The Australian Residential Real Estate value is currently $4.4 Trillion followed by Australian Superannuation at $1.5 Trillion, then Australian Listed Stocks at $1.3 Trillion, then Commercial Real Estate at $0.7 Trillion. Pretty amazing figures I thought. Just to get your head around it $4.4 Trillion is $4.4,000,000,000,000…that’s 12 zeros. As the Ipswich’s housing market continues to recover, all be it in a fairly sedate manner, the signs are looking promising for the future. The previous subdued rate of growth can probably be attributed to a few key points: Fewer first home buyers. The weakening of the first home buyer grant by our State government has hit pretty hard in Ipswich, most 1st home buyers can’t afford a brand new home, meaning a lower overall demand by the current active buyers with

less appetite to go into higher debt. The federal election is probably also having a damping effect on demand and of course consumer confidence is shakier than it was back in the boom of 2009. On a positive note, a strong and renewed buyer demand is starting to push values up at a faster rate compared to last year. We have recently had multiple offers submitted on the same properties, three in the past fortnight. Simply put, there are now lots of keen buyers actively trying to secure their new home. The record all time low interest rates are also pushing people in to action and as for the elections, well… stability in any government always builds confidence in the entire market. Like I’ve always said. “Life simply goes on “, so if your property is priced well, displayed well and marketed well, it will sell… and possibly for a price slightly higher than last year. The Real Estate industry is definitely doing its bit to help push along Australia’s economy.

Dr Lena Ferguson and the staff at Marburg Veterinary Clinic are definitely getting their fair share of tick paralysis in what clients regularly say is unexpected during this time of the year. A paralysis tick may become more apparent once your pet develops the clinical signs of wobbling in the hind legs, gagging, vomiting, and difficulty breathing. There are preventative treatments on the market which can help in many situations, however, they are not guaranteed and does not make your pet immune. Therefore, thorough daily checks of your pets to detect ticks are essential. Clipping your cat or dog may be good, not only to keep your pet cool in the summer months, but also allows better visualisation of an unwanted tick. You may book in your clipping appointment at Marburg Veterinary Clinic and get free advice from our qualified veterinary nurses. If your pet is showing any of these signs or seems unwell for any reason, feel free to call us at the Marburg Veterinary Clinic on 5464 4984 for advice. Motoring News WITH LLEWELLYN MOTORS, IPSWICH

Toyota - the brand Aussies trust Australian motorists have voted Toyota the country’s most trusted automotive brand for the eighth year in a row.

The car sale you just don’t want to miss - at Llewellyns With an election on, everything seems to slow down, but now and then it also pops up a deal too good to resist. Until the 21st of August, you have the chance to get a new car at never before seen prices. How does invoice cost plus $99 sound? No, its not a misprint. Invoice COST + $99 for base price of a brand new car! “The $99 covers our admin team processing and then we just add on-road costs (Stamp Duty, Registration, CTP) and our dealer delivery fee,” said Llewellyn’s James Sturges. With forward orders months in advance, Llewellyns in Booval has heaps of stock coming and needs the room, so for the first time ever, they have 112 vehicles in stock that are going out at invoice price plus just $99. No bull. No excuses. Invoice cost plus $99! To prove this is a genuine sale, Llewellyns will have the invoice for each vehicle on hand, so you know this is a FAIR DINKUM offer. As demand is expected to be high, Llewellyns have set up a dedicated website and hotline so bargain hunters can see the deals for themselves and book an appointment to test drive the car they want at a bargain price. “We are offering this across a huge range,” said General Manager James Sturges. “We have never had a sale of this size with all these brands together for years. We’ve got a hundred and twelve Suburus, Holdens and Hyundais that must be cleared at these crazy prices. “Four wheel drives, sedans, utes, wagons and even seven seaters are in the sale, and they all

have to be gone by August 21st, so we expect this to be a very popular sale and my advice would be to check out the ad on page 3 of this issue of Ipswich Life, then give our hotline a call as soon as possible to capitalise on this amazing offer and book a test drive on their chosen vehicle. “We are being upfront about it and showing customers the invoice, and all the cars are in stock now and ready to go. Once you add all the standard charges and the $99 to the factory invoice price, you will see the savings in black and white.” “We have more cars on the way so these vehicles have to be cleared as soon as possible,” Mr Sturges said. “Our staff can also arrange finance at competitive rates if people need it and it can all be done on the spot so they can come in and drive away that day in their new vehicle.” For more information on this incredible sale visit www.llewellyndeals.com.au or phone the dedicated sale hotline on 07 3432 4333. The sale must end on August 21st so now’s the time to get into Llewellyn’s for the deal of the year! Caption: Llewellyns car specialists Shannon and Michael get set for the ‘Invoice + $99” sale on at Llewellyns until August 21st.

The results of asurvey conducted for Reader’s Digest Australia coincide with the 50th anniversary of Toyota cars being built in Australia. Toyota is also heading towards its 11th consecutive year as the country’s bestselling automotive brand and the mid-size Toyota Camry is in its 20th year as the national sales leader in its class. Reader’s Digest editor Sue Carney said the survey of more than 3,000 people was conducted to identify the products that dominate lifestyles and hold the allimportant trust of Australians. Ms Carney said the most trusted brands were those that continued to offer quality and substance, particularly in uncertain times. “They have a long history of being steadfast and safe, which makes them a hot property in modern day Australia,” she said. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the award was a tribute to everyone who worked for Toyota and its national dealer network. “Toyota is proud to have again led this survey as the most trusted of more than 50 automotive brands in the country, but we take nothing for granted,” Mr Cramb said. “We are determined to keep improving our vehicles and all aspects of our business in the interests of our customers and their families,” he said. “We will continue to offer class-leading vehicles that Australians feel most confident driving - whether they are built here or imported.” Australian motorists have bought more than 5.7 million Toyota vehicles while in excess of one million locally built Toyota cars have been exported. Comments about Toyota by survey respondents include: • “Trustworthy company.” (Female 45-49, NSW) • “It’s the only car I buy.” (Female 50-54, QLD)

• “They are the most reliable cars around.” (Male 50-54, WA) For more info on Toyota motor vehicles contact local dealer Llewellyn Toyota on 3282 2922. Below: The Toyota Camry, setting new standards in the mid-size vehicle market.
