Dressing ‘Cinderella’ STAR CHAT CELEBRITY

Sandy Powell is the Costume Designer on the new Disney movie ‘Cinderella’. A three time Academy Award winner for her work on ‘The Young Victoria’, ‘The Aviator’ and ‘Shakespeare in Love’, along with being nominated seven other times for work on movies that include ‘Gangs of New York’, ‘Hugo’ and more, we picked her brains on what it is like facing the challenge of bringing a classic fairy tale to life, all through costume. Despite her ridiculously hectic schedule in Hollywood, Sandy emailed us back and answered some of our questions.

Q: What drew you to the project and what preparation was involved? A: I’ve spent many years designing costumes for men in men’s films, so I was excited about the prospect of doing a film that was so female focused. I began my research almost two years before we started shooting, and one of the very first things I did was look at setting it in different periods. We looked at everything from the 16th, 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and kept coming back to the 19th century, which had a sort of fairy tale look to it. Eventually we decided it would be a lot more interesting if it wasn’t strictly 19th century but more of a 1940s version of it instead. I presented (director) Kenneth Branagh with my ideas and we talked in great depth about each character, and as we developed costumes I would show him the fitting pictures so he could see what was happening as we went along. We approached the film as one would approach a storybook or a picture book for children: very colorful and vivid with fairly easy references as to who is good and who is wicked. Q: How do the costumes in the film differ from those in the animated version? A: I thought I’d forgotten all about Disney’s animated film until I had designed this “Cinderella” and saw there were quite a few

similarities. I think they were unintentional, but maybe they were subliminal. In the animation, nobody changes their clothes much. In our film, they change every five minutes. For Cinderella’s daily attire I didn’t want to do the rags and patchwork that most people remember from the animated film, so we put her in a dress which was one she would have worn back in happier times before the death of her Father. The dress was influenced by a 1920s floral print. The whole idea behind the stepsisters is that they weren’t physically ugly: they are beautiful but vain and ugly inside. If we were to succeed in making them ugly, I knew they had to be silly, so I decided to dress them identically as Disney did in the animated film, a bit like friends who go out shopping and get the same thing but in different colors. Cate Blanchett was the first person cast in the film, so I always had her in mind when designing the stepmother’s costumes. The look I was going for was Joan Crawford or Marlene Dietrich does Victorian and Cate has such incredible poise. She wears every outfit beautifully. It’s a designer’s dream really, because she is one of the greatest people there is to dress. There are only a handful of actors that you can throw anything on and they look fabulous, and she is one of them.

Q: What was involved in designing the glass slipper? A: I looked at lots of different possibilities of how to do a glass shoe, and realized the most important thing was that it had to sparkle, which meant that it had to be made of crystal because glass would not sparkle. I knew the shape of the shoe that I wanted, which was in fact based on an original shoe from the 1890s that I found in a Northampton show museum…the shoe was impossibly tiny with a five-inch heel and was simply elegant. But I soon realized that the only way we could even attempt to make a crystal shoe was with the help of Swarovski. When we approached them they were, of course, up to the challenge, and thus began a collaboration that took place over months and months with numerous trials and tests. The day they showed us the shoe was incredible actually…it was a huge relief and very exciting. No one was even able to wear it because crystal has no movement, so it was used as the shoe that all the women in the Kingdom try on. Q: The ballroom scene has so many costumes on screen, how did you plan out that scene? A: We wanted everything to be as colorful as possible. This is a fairy tale, and if we don’t treat it with color then it’s pointless, and that’s what’s been really fun. So the whole ballroom is an explosion of color, sumptuous, rich, and in some cases, really over the top, as many of the guests are there to impress, and hopefully marry, the Prince, and we’ve spent months creating this vast array of colors, looks and styles. We also wanted to have an element of international flavor, so we dressed princesses from China, Japan, India, Africa and Russia. Disney’s Cinderella opens in cinemas from March 26th.

Jets kick off 2015 season By Michael Dunn The Luxury Paints Ipswich Jets Rugby League team have launched into the 2015 Intrust Cup season, with a hard fought match against arch rivals Wynnum Manly. Just like the semi-final last year, it all looked lost for Wynnum Manly throughout their round one clash against the Ipswich Jets. Wynnum were behind for the close to the full 80 minutes, yet somehow they found a way – this time through a brilliant last ditch play which saw Daniel Ogden score his second try to seal another bit of heartbreak for the Jets courtesy of the Seagulls. The Jets had a late line up change with Broncos’ contracted player Daniel Vidot coming into the Ipswich line-up for Kurtis Lingwoodock. The game started in hot conditions with both sides guilty of plenty of dropped ball and wrong options. It was the Jets who first took the points on offer through Nemani Valekapa who had made several dangerous runs down his left side. Wes Conlon failed to convert but in the 30th minute the Jets had broken through for a 4-0 lead. Just before half time Marmin Barba brought up his 200th Intrust Super Cup point through his 30th try, this time Conlon converted to send the Jets to half time up 10-0 and starting to gain some confidence. The confidence was eroded after half time when Wynnum’s new recruit Patrick Templeman ran straight through the Jets’ defence to score under the posts and have Wynnum back in the contest at 10-6. The Jets suffered an injury blow to Barba who had to be carried off the field. Wynnum were able to take advantage of a Jets’ line up in disarray and Brendan Gibb scored for the Seagulls to lock up the game at 10-10. 2 Ipswich Life

The Jets had an answer in Conlon who rolled the dice and went for the intercept with Wynnum attacking; the result was a 100m try to Conlon who converted try to see the Ipswich Jets flying at 16-10 with 25 minutes to go. Ogden then stood up and scored out wide after some quick hands saw the fullback join the backline movement to finish off his side’s good work. The Jets were now in front 16-14 with nine minutes to play after goal-kicker Matt Seamark again uncharacteristically pushed the conversion wide. The error-riddled last nine minutes saw Wynnum stay in the contest and give themselves the best chance of winning when the cross field kick found that man Ogden. The Seagulls had inflicted another round one loss on the Jets, who haven’t started a season with a win since 2010. From top: Kurt Capewell was a star for the Jets. Melissa Keefer from Hogs Breath Springfield hands out balloons. Ipswich Jets players, led by Keiron Landers, will give their all in the Intrust Super Cup.

CITY VIBE Charge of Beersheba to be re-enacted Toogoolawah RSL Sub-branch has received $5,500 from the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program to help it hold a historical re-enactment of the‘’ - the Australian 4th Light Horse Brigade’s famous mounted charge at the Battle of Gaza in 1917. The re-enactment will be held at the Toogoolawah Showgrounds. “The endeavours of the Australian Light Horse during the First World War is of particular significance in Toogoolawah”, said the Federal Member for Blair, Shayne Neumann. “Many of its members were drawn from the town and across the Somerset Region. Decendants of those soldiers continue to reside in the area today”. Between 2014 and 2018, Australia commemorates the 100th Anniversary of the First World War. On April 25 this year we mark the centenary of the Anzac landings at Gallipoli. Mr Neumann said the former Federal Labor Government created the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Program to assist communities decide how to best commemorate the Anzac Centenary locally. “The First World War and the original Anzacs helped forge our national identity and define our national character,” Mr Neumann said.

Would you like a car with that? A last minute rush to grab some liquid hand soap for a business trip turned into a lucky purchase for Marion Mason, who was handed an entry form for a national competition to win a new Holden Cruze JHE 1.8L Equipe Hatch valued at $22,000. Late December 2014, Marion got a phone call (after several attempts) that put a smile on her face for quite a while. Marion had won the car! Brassall Pharmacy located at Brassall Shopping Centre was the lucky store for Marion, a senior accounts officer, where she picked up her new vehicle recently from Manager Pauline Ng and Deborah Hanson from Australian Pharmaceutical Industries. “All you had to do was purchase one of the ‘Best Buys’ from the December catalogue and you were in the draw to win the Cruze,” Marion said. “I was on my way to my work Christmas party, and dashed in to grab some soap.

MY TOP Robert De Niro Movies

FIVE

We love getting Top 5’s from readers, and Glen D from Forest Lake reads the mag online at www. ipswichlife.com.au and sent us his favourite top 5 De Niro flicks. After the initial shock of not seeing “Goodfellas” there, its still a great list. Congrats Glen, a double movie pass is on its way to you. Want to be like Glen? Send us a top 5 of anything (or see the suggestion below) and you could be our next Top Fiver! 1. Heat (1995) The Michael Mann masterpiece. No question one of the best movies to come from the nineties. Every frame is a feast. One hundred and sixty-four minutes of Pacino and De Niro sharing screen time. What’s not to love? 2. Cape Fear (1991) De Niro’s portrayal of psychotic and vengeful ex-con Max Cady sits alongside Jack Nicholson’s character in The Shining as the greatest unhinged ‘loose canon’ ever to (dis) grace the screen. 3. The Score (2001) ‘Clever’ is probably the best adjective to bestow upon this slick heist movie. Upsize it to ‘ingenius’ if you’re a real fan. The scene featuring ‘explosive water’ entry to a locked metal safe was famously tested on an episode of Mythbusters

OUT AND ABOUT IN

BLAIR

WITH SHAYNE NEUMANN, MP

Busy times in Blair It’s been another busy week around the Blair electorate. During the most recent Parliamentary sitting week, I spoke against the Abbott Government’s cruel cuts that will hurt families in Ipswich and the Somerset Region. These cuts will make it harder for our young people to find and keep jobs and harder for community organisations such as ‘Care and Concern’ in Esk to help those in need in our community. On Friday, I was delighted to participate in Ipswich East State School’s leadership induction ceremony. I was impressed by the school’s new student leaders and wish them well for the year ahead. On Saturday morning, I met with constituents at my mobile office at the Miners Diner in Ebbw Vale – my 125th mobile office in Blair since the last Federal election. Both the conversation and coffee were excellent. Later I attended the opening of Ipswich Men’s Shed ‘Grand Awning’ at Bundamba. Keeping it local, I’ve commissioned Men’s Shed to make new wooden frames for my mobile office signs and anticipate their firstrate work. In the afternoon, I attended an Ipswich TAFE graduation ceremony followed by the Jets v Seagulls match at North Ipswich Reserve. Congratulations to the new graduates and commiserations to the Jets who were pipped at the post! Later I joined the festivities at the Ipswich City Bulls season launch at Brassall. On Sunday evening, I was privileged to attend and give a prayer at the Bundamba Salvation Army’s ecumenical church service marking the Anzac Centenary. Reverend Bob Walker spoke splendidly about peace, justice and service. Good fellowship was enjoyed over supper afterwards. Another busy week in our vibrant and diverse community. Warm Regards, Shayne

4. Taxi Driver (1976) This movie was the second of (to date) eight collaborations between De Niro and director Martin Scorcese. A seminal study in individual and societal moral breakdown and decay. 5. City By The Sea (2002) Set on New York’s Long Island, whose real life municipal slogan is Civitas Ad Mare – Latin for “The City by the Sea” – at it’s core this film is a family drama that depicts the relationship between a detective and his son who has been accused of murder. Cost $40 million to make but only made back $30 million so not one of his better known roles but poignant, memorable and very De Niro nonetheless. NEXT ISSUE: Email your Top 5 ‘Yummiest Desserts of All Time & why’ to darren@ strikepublications.com.au to win a double movie pass and get in the next issue!

Open up their future at The Springfield Anglican College The 2015 school year has commenced in a very positive manner for The Springfield Anglican College. For the first time, student enrolment, from Kindergarten to Year Twelve, has risen above 900 students, with very strong demand for places in Kindergarten, Prep and Year Seven in particular. On the Secondary Campus, the completion of three major building projects; a Creative Arts Precinct, Year Seven classrooms and change rooms for sport, have added greatly to the facilities available to students. In the case of the Creative Arts Precinct, purpose built Music, Dance, Drama, Art and Instrumental Music areas now provide students with a much broader range of learning opportunities than previously available and there is great excitement among the community with the College production of the Musical ‘Oliver’ in August. On the Primary Campus, the completion of a Dance room during Term One aims to support the great interest in Dance, both curricular and extra-curricular, of students on the Primary Campus. One of the key ambitions of the College is to provide all students with the individual attention they deserve. The College has a pronounced pastoral underpinning and also a capped enrolment, which enables staff to work closely with students and ensure students do not become ‘lost in the crowd’. While the capped enrolment of 1,000 students plus 88 Kindergarten places has not yet been reached,

enrolment interest this year, and for 2016, would suggest it is not that far away. The College’s holistic approach to education aims to support the interests and talents of each student. While the College has a strong academic focus with approximately 70 percent of each Year Twelve cohort aspiring to attend university, School Based Traineeships and links with Institutes of TAFE well cater for students preferring non-university pathways. Six students this year are studying first year university courses as part of their package of studies. Learning Extension is also provided for student who demonstrate a high level of ability and interest in the areas of literacy and numeracy particularly, as well as potential across the broader spectrum of learning areas. The Primary Years Altitude programme is available to selected students in Years Four to Six, whilst the Secondary Years Altitude programme provides an extensive range of opportunities for students in areas including Maths and Literacy Extension, while students in Year Nine may select Altitude Extension as an elective subject. In Sport, students from Years Four to

Twelve participate in The Associated Schools competition each Saturday, playing against other independent schools from across the Brisbane region. Students also have great opportunity to achieve representative honours. Last year, for example, 65 students experienced success at either Regional, State or National level; 33 at Regional, 24 at State and 8 at National, which is exceptional for a College with approximately 500 students in Years Four to Twelve. Year Eleven have just returned from their Leadership Camp at Noosa North Shore, with Year Eight about to head off to Edmund Park for their Outdoor Education experience. In Term Two, 61 students, staff and parents are heading to Gallipoli and France, which will be a wonderful learning experience in itself, and notes have gone out in relation to a Creative Arts trip to New Zealand as well as a New Zealand Ski trip, both anticipated to take place in 2016. In Year Nine, students have embarked on their first outing as part of their ‘Rite Journey’ which included a camp over at the College and a 4:30am viewing of the sunrise at Mount Cootha. The Rite Journey, which focuses on the development of students’ emotional intelligence and resilience, has been running at the College for four years now and is highly valued in the eyes of students. Autumn Family Events

WITH Cr PAUL PISASALE

“What a difference!” for Kelli, with Solahart

Movies in The Park The great thing about Autumn in Queensland is the nights are still warm enough to enjoy an evening out without freezing, and what better way to spend time with the family than council’s free Movies in the Park. There are two events coming up. Frozen will be playing at Brooking Parklands (Ecco Ripley) from 6.30pm on March 21, and the LEGO Movie at Sutton Park, Brassall from 6.30pm on April 11.

When Ipswich Life and Solahart rang Kelli Smith to tell her she was the winner of a $5,000 solar hot water system last September she was over the moon. We caught up with Kelli to see how she felt about the difference it has made to her life, and her bills. “All I can say is that it has made a huge difference to our electricity bills,” Kelli said. “We were shocked at Christmas when they rang us and told us we were so far ahead in payments that we could take some of it back! So we now pay $30 a fortnight and we are still getting bills in credit!” Kelli, who is confined to a wheelchair, had always wanted Solar hot water, and is convinced of the benefits. “We’ve always wanted solar hot water, and thought we couldn’t afford it, but now I see that the savings we are making, the system pays for itself. “Unless you try it, you’ll never know, but after we got it we realised the savings that could be made. In five or ten years, if you add up the savings you make each quarter, it’s huge and the system eventually pays for itself.”

Family Adventure Day Murray Craig from Solahart said that you will get hot water all year round, no matter what the weather is doing. “The system has an automatic booster so on really cloudy days it will still deliver you hot water,” Murray said. “A system like this will guarantee year round hot water and you get the added benefit of huge savings on your electricity bill as Kelli has proven!” For more information on how to get unlimited hot water and start saving big bucks, call Murray now on 1300 721 946. Reduce the ill effects from Mozzie bites The recent diagnosis of over 60 Ipswich residents with Ross River Fever has increased the urgency for Ipswich residents to ensure their homes are not breeding sites for mosquitoes. Ross River Fever is a very serious and debilitating illness. It is not unusual to see an upswing in How to minimise the risk of breeding mosquito numbers at this time of year but the grounds: recent wet spell has made the problem worse. Ross River Fever causes joint swelling, fever and nausea that can last up to eight weeks and while the disease is not contagious it can lead to hospitalisation. “This unusually high number of diagnoses is not restricted to Ipswich and is occurring across South East Queensland,” said Cr Andrew Antoniolli. “The spike is clearly linked to recent major weather events along the coast. Council officers are liaising with Queensland Health and have determined an action plan to stop the spread of this disease in Ipswich. “We are constantly mapping sites of mosquito activity and spraying to swiftly neutralise the threat. “But control of pests is a matter for the whole community and residents can take some simple measures around the home to reduce mosquito populations at home.”

Don’t live with back pain, fix it

Correct posture and spine shape is at the core of the Chiropractic BioPhysics method of treatment which we offer at Booval Chiropractic, and we are one of very few clinics in Queensland fully equipped to be able to provide this. The curves in your spine act as levers, shock absorbers, and resistance to gravity; they also protect and reduce forces acting on the spinal cord and nerve tissues. However gravity, age, poor posture, improper physical activity, injury, and disease can all play a role in the misalignment of your spinal curves and, as a result, your entire body. CBP treatment can often help restore that balance. Following a detailed scientific analysis of your posture and the curvature of your spine as well as your case history and examination findings we sit down and offer a range of treatment options depending on what you want from us. Traditional Chiropractic can be wonderfully

effective for many conditions but with significant spine shape distortions it can often provide more limited relief. Should you choose the CBP rehabilitation option, a treatment plan is developed, based on your deficits, to restore proper alignment, relieve pain, and improve function. Your treatment may include a variety of tested and proven CBP techniques, including adjustment, exercise, and traction or what is termed ‘Spinal Remodeling’. Your posture is a window into the condition of your spine and nervous system, and reveals how we adapt to stress and our lifestyle. It is little wonder those with poor posture complain of being tired and in pain! For more information contact Scott at Booval Chiropractic on 3282 4478.

DO YOU HAVE AN PUBLIC EVENT COMING UP? Tell us about it! Email: Darren@strikepublications.com.au

— Addressing the cause?

If you suffer from headaches or neck pain that keep coming back, these are the facts you must know Living with headaches is tough. Day after day of being miserable, irritable, and looking a lot older than you really are. The frustration of knowing that your friends and family don’t understand what you’re going through. Add this to doctors’ visits, MRI’s and CT scans — which only come back with “normal” results. And that’s not all… trying one medication after another, feeling like you’re on a merry-go-round of drugs. All this is enough to make anyone want to scream!

IF YOU DO NOTHING ELSE, READ THIS: 1) An abnormal spinal curve is far more common in people who suffer from ongoing headaches and neck pain. 2) An abnormal spinal curve can be readily identified using a standing x-ray image. 3) An abnormal spinal curve can often be improved using tested, published techniques. Why not get rid of those debilitating headaches today? Read the full facts on this page! I am Dr Scott Charlton (Chiropractor), and I’ve been helping many patients with neck pain and headaches live pain free by improving posture and restoring normal neck curves using a new kind of treatment involving targeted exercise, adjustments and rehabilitation machines. Every week I hear how people suffer from severe headaches — statements like … • “The pain just keeps coming back” • “Nothing I have tried gives lasting results” • “I feel like my head is in a vice” • “My eyes hurt and I’m always tired” • “I’ve had headaches since childhood” • “The pain affects my moods and then my relationships suffer”

• A thorough analysis of your exam and x-rays where we’ll map out how you may get rid of your headaches once and for all.

MORE PILLS ARE NOT THE SOLUTION, COULD THIS BE IT? As someone with four degrees (including first class honours in law), I am a stickler for the facts. Here is what some of the science says about abnormal neck curves and posture. The further forward the head goes over the shoulders, the higher the incidence of headaches (Cephalalgia 2006;26(3):314). Headache patients show significantly straightened cervical curve configurations (Headache 1993;33;90-5). Reversal of the neck curve leads to total spinal malalignment, rounding of the shoulders, headache, neck pain, scapular pain and possibly even low back pain (Orthop Traumatol 1998;47;1169-71). Abnormal neck curves cause increased tissue stress which provides the basis for degenerative joint disease (Clinical Biomechanics 2001;16;276-84). A neck curve of 30°– 40° is a protective window against neck pain, whilst less than 30° is a risk factor for neck pain and less than 20° is a risk factor for chronic neck pain (Spine 2004;29(22):2485-92). Call and tell one of our friendly assistants you’d like to come in for the Headache Evaluation. Call today and we can get started with your consultation, exam and x-rays if indicated as soon as there’s an opening in the schedule. Our office is called Booval Chiropractic and you will find us at 6/160 Brisbane Road (opposite Booval Fair, next to Dick Smith) Sincerely, Dr Scott Charlton BCom LLB (1st Hons) BAppSci MClinChiro

WHAT’S GOING ON

SHOPPING New shopping centre to open in Augustine Heights A new shopping centre will commence work next month as Springfield and Augustine Heights residents will soon be able to shop, dine and enjoy new local stores at the corner of Augusta Parkway and Leon Capra Drive. Ipswich Planning and Development Committee Chairman Councillor Paul Tully said council had approved the new local centre to be called ‘Augusta Village’ with the main access from Leon Capra Drive. The shopping centre’s key retailer will be a 645m2 fresh food market, which will be surrounded by another nine local retail outlets. “Retailers will vary with suitable shop sizes for a hairdresser, bakery, bottle shop and restaurants, as well as seven outdoor dining areas included in the plans,” Cr. Tully said. The outdoor dining spaces would be under the main roof of the development. “Outdoor dining creates such a relaxing atmosphere and I can see people enjoying a Sunday morning breakfast or weekend dinner at Augusta Village,” Cr Tully said. “An acoustic barrier will be constructed on the western and southern building facades with the development incorporating 79 parking spaces.” Traffic coming into Augusta Village will be from Leon Capra Drive and the road will be widened to incorporate a right turn lane. Toilet facilities, including facilities for children would also be provided during operating hours of 6am to 10pm seven days a week. “This development will be a major boost for Ipswich’s eastern suburbs with handy access from Redbank Plains, Bellbird Park and the Centenary Highway.”

Construction is expected to commence in April, with an estimated completion date before the end of this year. Below: Cr Paul Tully with developer Evans Long Director Dirk Long.

A long awaited furniture destination has been realised in Ipswich, with the official opening of the exclusive La-Z-boy Gallery at Furniture Court & BedsRus in South Street. Owner, David Holdorf, said the response from customers over the weekend was fantastic, with everyone impressed with not only the range of La-Z-boy chairs and lounges but also the quality. “Everyone knows about the La-Z-boy Recliner but customers were pleasantly surprised that there were also contemporary European designs and a range of leather and fabric choices,” David said. “We had a great weekend of trading, and everyone was happy because they got to experience something special in furniture retailing — and those who bought something went away with a real bargain.” The Gallery in Ipswich is only the fourth one opened across Australia this year. National Sales Manager for La-Z-boy, Peter Sharratt, said that the Gallery concept has been a welcome addition to furniture retailing culture in Australia and New Zealand. “Customers choose La-Z-boy for a variety of reasons but mostly it’s about brand awareness, quality and the peace of mind that if something is not perfect then the after-sales service will fix it,” he said. “There’s a lifetime warranty on each recliner’s mechanism and a two-year warranty on the fabric. La-Z-boy is price competitive compared with imported brands and the brand is known for its quality and extended life.” La-Z-boy chose Ipswich for its Gallery in the region, as part of its strategy to have one desination in each region. That way, the instore gallery can carry the full range of chairs and lounges, not a selected range.

Air Force rocks Avalon Air Show Fast jets roared over Avalon Airfield west of Melbourne earlier this month as the RAAF’s F/A18F Super Hornets and ‘Classic’ Hornets put on an impressive display of air power, along with other aircraft such as the KC-30A Air Refueller, C-17A ‘Globemaster III’, and the E-7A ‘Wedgetail’. The Avalon Air Show served as the major showcase of Air Force capabilities for the year, and provided the venue to show new aircraft types to the general public. After three weekdays of trade shows, the public days over the weekend provided a feast of air show entertainment, with historical flypasts of aircraft of the past, stunt flying and spectacular formation flying. The event also coincided with the Chief of Air Force Symposium held in Melbourne. Main photo: A RAAF fighter pilot from RAAF Base Williamtown takes off from Avalon. (Defence)

The KC-30A Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) aircraft has a new lease of life, following acceptance of the Aerial Refuelling Boom System (ARBS) capability. This is an important milestone for the KC-30A, as the ARBS system is needed to refuel aircraft such as the E-7A ‘Wedgetail’ and other aircraft types needing the boom system. The KC-30A project had been managed as a Project of Concern since 2010 due to delays in delivery of fully functioning aircraft. Defence has formally accepted the capability. The absence of the boom capability has not hampered 33 Squadron operations to a great extent, with the KC-30A conducting hoseand-drogue refuelling activities since 2011. In fact, one KC-30A is currently deployed on operations in the Middle East, refuelling RAAF

F/A-18F Super Hornets and other Coalition combat aircraft. The RAAF has accepted five aircraft to date, now operating out of home base at RAAF Amberley. Acceptance of the ARBS paves the way for the progressive introduction of the boom in-flight refuelling capability leading ultimately to Defence declaring Final Operational Capability for the KC-30A fleet. Operational evaluation of the ARBS is not expected to bring any further suprises in operational performance. Apart from air refuelling the KC-30A has an airlift capability making it a multirole aircraft. The KC-30A solution for in-flight air refuelling has been popular worldwide, with 35 of the Airbus A330 MRTTs ordered, with 22 delivered. Photo: KC-30A shows its lines over the ocean. (Defence)

by Eileen Ormsby It was the ‘eBay of drugs’, a billion dollar empire. Behind it was the FBI’s Most Wanted Man, a mysterious crime czar dubbed ‘Dread Pirate Roberts’. Silk Road lay at the heart of the ‘Dark Web’ — a parallel internet of porn, guns, assassins and drugs. With the click of a button LSD, heroin, meth, coke, any illegal drug imaginable, would wing its way by regular post from any dealer to any user in the world. How was this online drug cartel even possible? This is the incredible true story of Silk Road’s rise and fall, told with unparalleled insight into the main players — including alleged founder and kingpin Dread Pirate Roberts himself — by lawyer and investigative journalist Eileen Ormsby. *This is why I love Emma Watson. In giving a speech for International Women’s Day she addressed the ‘nude photo’ scandal of last year. “After I gave my speech [at the UN] there was a website threatening to release naked pictures of me, with a countdown. I knew it was a hoax, I knew the pictures didn’t exist, but I think a lot of people that were close to me knew that gender equality was an issue but didn’t think it was that urgent — that it was a thing of the past. They saw that the minute I stepped up and talked about women’s rights, I was immediately threatened. Within less than 12 hours I was receiving threats. So I think it was just a wake-up call. This is a real thing, it’s happening now. Women are receiving threats. I was just raging. It made me so angry. I was like, ‘This is why I have to be doing this.’ So if they’re trying to put me off, they did the opposite.” *This sounds like one of the stranger things to be adapted for Broadway. Remember Stephen King’s ‘Misery’? The 1990 horror flick that starred Kathy Bates as a crazy fan who didn’t like the ending to her favourite book so she kidnapped the author and broke his legs with a sledgehammer so he couldn’t get away? Yeah, that will be adapted for Broadway and it will star none other than action hero Bruce Willis! Original screenplay adaptation writer William Goldman will also write the musical. It’s all based on Stephen King’s classic 1987 novel. *Imagine how different Titanic would’ve been without Leonardo DiCaprio playing Jack. Well, there was a chance it may not have happened — and Jack would’ve been played by Jeremy Sisto (who played Elton in Clueless; and Det. Cyrus Lupo in Law & Order). Sisto told the Huffington Post: “That was one of the many, many jobs I didn’t get. It’s always fun to see a movie that you know really well and love with this alternate-universe person in there. So while I was a little embarrassed to reveal one of my many failures in life, at the same time I couldn’t deprive Titanic lovers of seeing that alternate universe. So I was just insanely inspired by it and a little heartbroken when the role didn’t come my way.”

Madonna has paid Kanye West quite possibly the biggest compliment that she could pay – labelling him “the next Madonna” because of his ability to grab headlines like her. She said: “‘We know, and recognize, that we have making a headline in common… Kanye is the new Madonna. Kanye is the black Madonna. We’re comrades in the envelope-pushing genre.” And she may be right — after ‘bags of air’ from Kanye’s Yeezus concerts of 2013-2014 were listed on ebay and receiving bids upward of $60,000USD before eBay pulled the listing off the website. *Speaking of her Madgesty… Madonna is coming back to Australia for the first time in 20 years. Her last Aussie Tour was ‘The Girlie Show’ in 1993 (above). She is expected to play dates in 2016. *Perhaps the worst kept secret in Hollywood… The third book in James Dashner’s Maze Runner trilogy (The Death Cure) has now been confirmed it will be turned into a film. The sequel to ‘Maze Runner’ Scorch Trials is due out

later this year. Fingers crossed Death Cure will be out in 2016. If you haven’t already read the books do yourself a favor and give them a go. You won’t be able to put them down! *Big kids (like me) rejoice! Adventure Time is coming to the big screen. A full length animated movie of Finn and Jakes adventures in the Land of Ooo is currently in development. Till next time....Louise

Talking Beer WITH TIM AT THE YAMANTO TAVERN

One of the biggest myths and misconceptions in beer is that only men drink the stuff! With the craft beer market kicking goals left right and centre this couldn’t be more wrong, women as a demographic of craft beer drinkers is rising quicker than their male counterparts. This rise in female craft beer drinkers means that women have more of a say in setting trends and determining which beers appear on tap in venues. Two pioneers of craft beer in Australia are Jayne Lewis and Danielle Allen, now these names may not sound familiar, it will make more sense when I tell you that these two lovely ladies are the owners and brewers at Two Birds Brewing, which is one of Australia’s fastest growing craft beer brands. Two Birds Brewing has Golden Ale, Sunset Ale, Bantam IPA and Taco Wheat Beer in their current portfolio. Jayne Lewis and Danielle Allen grew up and met in Perth over 16 years ago, but it took a two-week tour of the West Coast of the US in 2010 for them to realise how much they had in common. Their shared love for the finer delights in life saw them visit breweries, wineries and dine at some world-renowned restaurants. During the trip the West Australians hatched the idea to start their own brewing company and after 6 months

of discussing their dream to own and run their own business, Two Birds Brewing was born. Jayne and Danielle gave up their full time jobs and the journey began in earnest in June 2011. Their philosophy is to make the kind of beers that they enjoy drinking, so they make beers that have flavour and interest, while being clean, sessionable and approachable. They also believe in balance, both in beer and in life, so they aim to make the kind of beers that suit good times with your mates and also that match whatever is on your plate. The girls also like to have fun and do things a little differently, so expect to see some more out-there beers in the future! If you would like to try some Two Birds beer they are available now at Char’d Restaurant and Harry Brown Liquor Store both located at the Prince Alfred Hotel, Booval. Cheers, Tim

MONEY & PROPERTY

MATTERS Interest in Interest BY MARK BOURIS

Interest-only versus Principal & Interest The strength of the investment property market has brought with it a rise in interestonly loans, and several government agencies have voiced concern about interest-only lending. But what’s the problem? Most borrowers have a principal & interest (P&I) loan on their primary place of residence. A P&I loan allocates some of the mortgage repayment to the principal loan amount and some to the interest accruing from the principal. So if the repayment schedule is adhered to, the loan is fully paid-out over the agreed term. In an interest-only loan, the lender writes a standard mortgage but agrees to a term in which the borrower pays only the interest, which means monthly repayments are lower than a P&I loan. Over the term of the interestonly loan, the loan principal is unchanged. Typically the interest-only term is five years, with an option to extend five years. After the interest-only term the loan reverts to a standard P&I loan, but the repayments are amortised over the remaining years. So if you take a five-year interest-only term in a 25-year mortgage, when the loan reverts your subsequent repayments are for a 20-year P&I

mortgage. If you extend the interest-only loan for another five years, after it reverts the remainder of your 25-year loan becomes a 15year P&I mortgage. When the loan reverts to a P&I loan, the repayments usually rise and so the concerns voiced about these loans are mostly about affordability. This complaint suggests that borrowers are taking interest-only loans so they can afford the repayments on larger loans than they could afford if they were P&I. But the loans shouldn’t be taken for affordability reasons. They are best used for investing in property, and they are most effective where there’s advice and tax planning accompanying them. In best practice, this is how an interest-only loan is used: A couple with a P&I loan on their primary place of residence, borrow to buy an investment property. Their investment loan is interest-only because the interest is the only part of the finance costs in an investment property which is tax-deductible. At the same time, the couple has non-tax deductible debt in their family household: their mortgage, their car finance, their credit cards. So the couple use their income to paydown their personal non-deductible debt, while they only service the tax-deductible component of their investment property debt: the interest. Interest-only loans can be a tax-effective way to invest in property, however they are best conducted when the borrower has taken expert advice. And investment property should also make sense on a cash-flow basis. As with all investments: do your homework, consult with experts and always acknowledge the risks. BEHIND THE

WHEEL New Ford Mustang arriving this year The all-new Mustang arrives later this year with many enthusiasts keen to get their hands on it. Ford already holds around 1,200 orders for the Mustang Fastback and Convertible, and with more than 15,000 fans and intending buyers also requesting more information about the car via the Ford website. Customers will initially be able to option their Mustang I4 and GT Fastback with OTT racing stripes and black painted roof, 19-inch Premium Wheels with Lustre Nickel finish on the GT and prestige paint.
The clean-sheet design of both Ford Mustang Fastback and Convertible evokes the essential character of the vehicle, retaining key design elements of the classic Mustangs recognisable to car fans everywhere, including the long sculpted hood and short rear deck, with a contemporary execution. Several key design features define the new Ford Mustang, including: • A low roof height and wide stance • Sleek profile enabled by steeply sloped windscreen and rear glass • Three-dimensional, tri-bar tail-lamps • Contemporary execution of the iconic car’s signature trapezoidal grille and shark-bite front fascia

Ford Mustang convertible drivers will appreciate the standard multilayer insulated cloth top that gives the car an upscale appearance and a quiet cabin. The top has a sleek profile when folded for open-air motoring. Large, clear instrumentation puts vehicle information right in front of the driver in the roomy cabin with an aviation-inspired cockpit, while ergonomic and tactile switches and knobs provide control. The vehicle’s width and new rear suspension contribute to improved shoulder and hip room for passengers and a usefully shaped bootspace that can accommodate two golf bags. The new Ford Mustang features all-new front and rear suspensions. At the front, a new perimeter sub-frame helps to stiffen the front structure while reducing mass, providing a strong foundation for more predictable wheel control that benefits handling, steering and ride. More than nine million Mustangs have been sold since it was first launched in 1964. The world’s most-liked vehicle on Facebook, Mustang has made thousands of appearances in film, television, music and video games.

Passat is ‘Car of the Year 2015’ The winner was announced on the afternoon before the Geneva International Motor Show.

“We are extremely proud of this accolade,” explained Prof. Martin Winterkorn, CEO of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, at the prizegiving ceremony in Geneva. “In the new Passat, we have again succeeded in developing a car that sets the standards for its class in terms of technology and quality. This honour is a tremendous confirmation for the work of our engineers, designers and the entire team. The new Passat shows that the Volkswagen brand has the right answers to the challenges of our time.”

One of the oldest and most well-known awards in Europe, “Car of the Year” has been honouring the best new releases in the car

industry every year since 1964. The jury, consisting of 58 European motoring journalists from 22 countries, had nominated seven candidates ahead of the final. Two current Volkswagen models have already received the coveted award in the past, namely the Polo in 2010 and the Golf in 2013. In addition to the “Golden Steering Wheel 2014” and “Auto Trophy 2014”, the top position as “Car of the Year” was preceded by several accolades at home and abroad.

The new Passat, in all its versions, is one of the most successful mid-class cars in the world and with 1.1 million units (in 2014) one of the highest-volume series of the Volkswagen Group worldwide. Now in its eighth generation, the best-seller is regarded as one of the most innovative cars in its class.

Fiat 500 Vintage ’57 The Fiat 500 has always been a celebration of its iconic predecessor, adopting not only the look but also the character and verve of the 1957 original. But now FIAT is taking that homage to a new level with the new Fiat 500 Vintage ‘57 which has debuted at the Geneva Motor Show. The Vintage ‘57 is a contemporary interpretation of the stylistic features that gave the original its distinctive identity. Finished in pastel blue with a contrasting white roof, spoiler, antenna and mirror covers, the most distinctive element of the new Fiat 500 Vintage ‘57 is its 16-inch vintage alloy wheels, a nod to those used on the original 500 but updated and refined for contemporary tastes. The wheel centres feature the historical Fiat logos, a subtle touch that’s repeated on the front and rear badges.

Jaguar F-Type Coupe

The retro theme of the Fiat 500 Vintage ‘57 continues inside with the a white dashboard; historic Fiat logo in the steering wheel boss and tan-coloured Poltrona Frau leather seats with ivory leather ‘half-moon’ inserts and “500” embroidery in tan. More than 1.5 million have been produced.

The Jaguar F-TYPE Coupé has built on a hugely successful 2014 by picking up three major UK awards in February 2015 alone. The F-TYPE Coupé was crowned Best New Car at the Automotive Management (AM) Awards, Coupé of the Year in the UK Car of the Year awards and Sports Car of the Year in the Automotive Management picked the F-TYPE Coupé as its Best New Car over models like the Mercedes C-Class and Audi TT thanks to its “pulse-quickening performance and agile handling”. The judges were also impressed with the F-TYPE Coupé’s everyday refinement and value for money compared with rivals. UK Car of the Year 2015 judges awarded the F-TYPE ‘Coupé of the Year’ having been impressed by its styling, performance and handling. Alex Goy, XCAR.com’s Cars Editor and UKCOTY judge said: “To see the F-TYPE Coupé is to like it, to drive it is to love it.” There’s more to come from the F-TYPE in 2015, with the updated 2016 model year range. Both the Coupé and Convertible are now available with the option of a six-speed manual gearbox and all-wheel-drive for the first time, and all models come with the all-new InControl infotainment system.
