STAR CHAT Judith Lucy Is All Woman CELEBRITY

When Helen Reddy sang those classic lyrics ‘I am woman, hear me roar’ it hit a nerve with women across the world and became an anthem for the feminist movement.

‘Judith Lucy is All Woman’ screens Wednesday nights on ABC1 or catch up on www.abc.net.au/iview

But in 2015 comedian Judith Lucy has taken it to the next level with her new show ‘Judith Lucy Is All Woman’ which includes highlights of Judith trying Jelly Wrestling and fulfilling a dare of dressing as a man and having a wee standing up, and if you think that’s creepy, it is...but very, very funny. Judith took us on her ‘Spiritual Journey’ back in 2011, and after questioning life in her forties, this new series is like an expansion on that idea of trying to work out what life is all about these days, and where do women fit in to the picture? It’s another successful partnership with the ABC that has invested heavily in Judith’s career, right back to the mid 1990’s when she was a member of The Late Show...and Judith realises that she feels right at home with the network. “Are you serious? Come on, who else would employ me? I’m a brunette, over 25, and not a size 8. It’s either the ABC or bust! Let’s not paint it any other way,” Judith said. “I guess the seed for this whole show was planted when I was talking with my friend (and well known author) Kaz Cooke, when we realised that pole dancing was now a form of exercise. Yes, ‘exercise’. We talked about in the 80’s we thought things were going to get better for women, like an end to homophobia, racism…all things of the past, and of course I’m an idiot!” The cameras follow Judith around the

country as she examines what it means to be a woman in Australia in 2015. Does Feminism have a place? Have things changed? Where does a woman in her 40’s fit in? “The nature of doing anything in this documentary style is that things get a life of their own. You don’t know how anything is going to go, that’s one of the joys of it, and I went into it with an open mind, plus had my fair share of surprises. I feel like I was very lucky to have this experience. “I don’t know anything about anything, it’s one of the ironies of life. When you are 20 you are so certain about everything, and as you get older you find yourself creeping towards the realisation that life is a big question mark. “Now I feel like I’m just a big blur of grey. I had a similar experience with this as I did with ‘Spiritual Journey’, and I realised that I was a lot more judgemental of people. We have a tendancy to judge, and I came out of this thinking I have no right to judge anyone on their lives, especially the choices some women make.” In one episode Judith swaps places with a mum of five for a few hours, as a social experiment. “A perfect example of being judgmental is taking five children for the day. It was the first thing that happened that really surprised me, and it came down to asking women if they are feminists. I asked the mum of five and

she said yes, I am. That very much made me look at myself, and good lord, spending two hours with five children gave me a respect for women in that position!” The show often features Judith talking with her circle of friends including some of the nation’s best comics including Denise Scott and Mick Molloy, which leads most of us to assume that catching up with her friends means hours of laughter. “Oh God no! Comedians do nothing but complain. We’re just sad clowns. We save all the funny stuff for camera!” Judith said. “But seriously though, I’m very lucky to have such great friends, and a lot of them are comedians, and a lot of others aren’t…but isn’t that what friends are about, sitting around and having a laugh? At the end of the day I guess that’s why most of us have friends.” So was there one thing that Judith resolved making the show as she approaches the nifty fifties? “I kind of think that 50 is 50, 40 is 40, but there’s no denying that people age differently now. I look at my grandmother, and as a kid I’d skip up to her and say ‘how are you grandma’? “Oh I’m waiting to die, she’d say. She was only in her 50’s! Honestly, my grandmother spent the last 40 years of her life in a rocker watching the Mike Walsh show. She did nothing! “That doesn’t happen in 2015, people are so active, and interested in what younger people are doing. “Plus nobody dyes their hair blue any more, which helps I think. I hope the fact that I’m so honest means that people can be honest with me. I don’t feel it’s just men that are confused about ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ coming out on Valentines Day. I mean, it made sense that the ‘Saw’ films came out on Halloween! “I’m a work in progress, we all are, aren’t we?”

Discover Ipswich guide out now The 2015 Tourist Guide to boost tourism in Ipswich has been published. The Discover Ipswich guide produced by Ipswich City Council is distributed widely. “This guide captures the essence of our wonderful city and highlights its unique attributes,” Mayor Paul Pisasale said. “We want people to come to Ipswich and have fun. In fact, our catch cry for 2015 is ‘feel like a kid again and let your kids be kids’. “Ipswich has everything from big boys’ toy experiences, with trike tours and V8 race experiences through to super hero fun such as hot air balloon and helicopter flights. Cr Pisasale said many residents did not realise the number of visitors drawn to the city each year and the economic benefits delivered to

the city. “Tourism contributed $136 million to the economy through visitor spending and attracted a total of 1.1 million visitors in 2013. Councillor David Pahlke said the new guide provided a wealth of information about tourism experiences available in Ipswich. “Backing up the guide is the award-winning Ipswich Visitor Information Centre located in Queens Park. Locally, the guides will be available from the Visitor Information Centre in Queens Park and at accommodation houses, libraries, attractions and rental car companies.” Cr Pahlke encouraged residents to pick up a copy or read it online on the Discover Ipswich website or people can order a copy by calling the Visitor Information Centre on 3281 0555 or online at www.discoveripswich.com.au

Families swarming like bees to Honeywood! The Honeywood Estate in Fernvale has notched up over $1 million in sales to eager buyers in January this year! Buyers have been attracted to Honeywood’s beautiful streetscapes and stunning views on offer. The estate’s latest release features 42 elevated homesites with sizes ranging from 600sqm to 826sqm. According to Jarod Herden, the estate manager, what sets this release apart from the rest is the elevation and stunning views available from the newly completed homesites. “Construction was completed prior to the official release so people are able to walk around the homesites and really appreciate the elevated position, cool breezes and imagine their dream home while standing on the block,” said Mr Herden. Clinton Trezise, Associate Director for Colliers International Residential said the latest land release has again lifted the benchmark for quality estates in the Somerset region. “The views and the location of homesites on offer are exceptional. This release is situated on some the most elevated land in the estate. “The benching and retaining offered by the development has many benefits for purchasers

including considerable savings on site costs as well as flat, usable space in the backyards. It is rare to be able to acquire such elevated homesites without “Ready to build land lots are still priced from an affordable $139,000. There are over 220 families already calling this estate home and the community is continually growing.” Colliers International, in partnership with some of Queensland’s leading builders, have a number of house and land packages to suit all buyers starting from a low $295,000. “Our affordable house and land packages are even better value for first home buyers,” said Mr Trezise. “With the First Home Owners Construction Grant, first home buyers can secure a home from as little as $337 per week* (*Conditions Apply). I’m unaware of any other residential estates in South East Queensland that can offer a new home on a generous 600sqm homesite for the same value.” To find out more about the Honeywood Estate, visit the sales and information centre located on the Brisbane Valley Highway in Fernvale or contact the sales office on (07) 5427 0511.

What’s hot on TV in 2015 Last issue we took you through the movies to see this year, now it’s time to see what will be on offer through the small screen. Although with every home these days boasting a plasma or LCD screen why we still refer to it as the ‘small’ screen seems odd, but bear with us…you know we mean ‘TV’ right? It’s a mixed bag of shows this year. Some will leave you begging for more, others may leave you begging to have them axed. Either way, Australian viewing habits have changed in the last few years, with just as many, if not more people choosing to watch shows online instead of live to air. With online content services Netflix, Presto and Stan all launching this year, whichever way you watch your shows, here’s some of the best picks for 2015.

Glitch (ABC) Starring Patrick Brammall of Offspring and Upper Middle Bogan who in acting terms is the ‘man of the moment’. He plays a small-town cop who is called to the local cemetery in the middle of the night to discover that six people have risen from the dead in perfect health. This 6x1 hour series sees a rundown town take on a new life.

The Peter Brock Story (Ten)
A hero to generations of Australians, dominating motorsport for more than two decades, The Peter Brock Story, produced by Shine Australia, tells the story of a unique Australian in a high-octane drama event. No word yet on who will get the title role of an Aussie sporting legend.

Restaurant Revolution (Seven) Inspired by My Restaurant Rules, the first truly interactive show where viewers could actually dine in the restaurants televised.

Gallipoli (Nine) Already screening to strong ratings, this stars Lachy Hulme, Matt Nable, Anthony Hayes, Jeremy Lindsay Taylor, plus Kodi Smit-McPhee. On the 100th Anniversary of Gallipoli, this follows a 17-year-old boy who lies about his age to follow his brother into the army and into the Great War. With John Edwards and Imogen Banks behind the camera (Offspring, Secret Life of Us, Puberty Blues) this should be one of the highlights of the year. A seven part drama that is rating very well.

Australia: The Story of Us (Seven) More than 40,000 years in the making… it’s Australia’s history, from the beginning to the present day with CGI sequences that offer a never-seen-before window into early Australia.

The Odd Couple (Ten) Matthew Perry from Friends, developed, executive-produced and stars in an updated version of the Neil Simon classic. Perry plays messy sports writer Oscar Madison, who takes in his friend — neat-freak photographer Felix Unger, played by Thomas Lennon, after his wife kicks him out.

Married at First Sight (Nine) This sees three of Australia’s leading relationship experts meticulously matchmake eight singles into four married couples. These experts make matches that guarantee the strongest possible foundation for a relationship. Each prospective bride and groom will meet for the very first time on their wedding day and proceed to live as husband and wife. Follow them as they marry, honeymoon, meet the in-laws, set up home, and then decide whether to stay together or buy a ticket to SplitsVille.

Deadline Gallipoli (Foxtel)

The Great Australian Race Riot (SBS)

Foxtel’s Gallipoli series has lots of star power, with the Gallipoli story told from the perspective of Australia’s war correspondents. Stars Mr Bingle himself, Sam Worthington, plus Hugh Dancy, Ewen Leslie and Charles Dance plus a guest spot by Bryan Brown.

Best-selling author and columnist Peter FitzSimons presents a three-part documentary series that charts Australia’s 170-year history of violent mobs and race riots.

Grace and Frankie (Netflix) Starring Jane Fonda, Lilly Tomlin, Martin Sheen and Sam Waterston… what a cast! Long-time rivals Grace and Frankie are brought together when their husbands announce they are in love! Created by the writer of Friends, Marta Kauffman. The star power alone will guarantee viewers.

How To Get Away With Murder (Seven) The new legal drama from TV powerhouse Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy; Scandal) starring Academy Award nominee Viola Davis.

The Ex-PM (ABC) An ex-Prime Minister doesn’t know what to do with his time. While star Shaun Micallef is on a hot streak, there’s no denying his midas touch in recent years. Comedy gold awaits.

The Amazing 90’s (Nine) The 1990s was a time when technology accelerated us into our digital future, when reality TV got way too real, and when politics could focus on the trivial. The Amazing 90s is a series that will cover all the big events and personalities of the decade from Australia and overseas in TV, movies, music, pop culture, sport and politics. Guests include Monica Lewinsky, John Howard, Pauline Hanson.

Struggle Street (SBS) This three-part observational documentary about a Western Sydney housing commission community gives viewers an unprecedented window into a world and community that is ignored at best, and at worst demonised by the media. It has real issues, heart and humour. Following the success of ‘Benefits Street’ in the UK, this could be a real eye opener.

Catching Milat (Seven) This is a dramatised version of the investigation into the 1990s backpacker murders leading to the arrest and conviction of serial killer Ivan Milat, one of Australia’s most infamous serial killers. After the bodies of backpackers are discovered in Belanglo State Forest, Police unit Task Force Air begins its search for a murderer. Ultimately the bodies of seven backpackers are found.

RETURNING FAVOURITES All the hit shows of 2014 are back, including My Kitchen Rules, The Block, MasterChef, The Bachelor (and a new series: The Bachelorette), Winners & Losers (above), Dancing With The Stars, House Rules, The Voice and The X Factor. So if you’re into finding people with little talent who love to cook while renovating a bathroom and doing the Foxtrot while on the lookout for love… you should be pretty well catered for. Plus The Biggest Loser will be back late in 2015 for Ten under the new name ‘TBL: Families’ with a return to the most popular format, as four members of a family battle to shed a ton of fat in the process. Expect Steve ‘Commando’ Willis to do a lot of yelling…which is why we love him. ABC will bring back local and overseas favourites Doctor Who, Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries, Redesign My Brain, Gruen, and a third series of Craig MacLachlan in the wonderful Dr Blake Mysteries (pictured left) SBS will produce a 7th season of the Aussie version of the popular ‘Who Do You Think You Are’, plus favourites Rockwiz, Eurovision, South Park and a four part mini series The Principal starring Alex Dimitriades and Aden Young.

Gogglebox (Ten) The show that is about watching people watching TV. No, that isn’t a typo… you’re watching people watching TV. Seriously. Cameras will capture ordinary Aussies as they watch and interact. This show has been a massive hit in several countries, so don’t be surprised if you find it THE show that everyone will be talking about at work the next day.

Aquarius (Seven) David Duchovny (The X Files; Californication) as a tough, no-nonsense homicide detective on the trail of a real life serial killer. Ipswich Life 3

CITY VIBE

WITH SHAYNE NEUMANN, MP

Judgment Day

Our Smart City The City of Ipswich can now proudly boast we are the first ever Australian city to be named a Top 7 Intelligent Community by the Intelligent Community Forum in New York. Ipswich was recognised for its 20year economic development plan, our digital hub project that was released in line with the NBN announcement, our city centre redevelopment that uses digital technologies to attract tenants and improve public safety, as well as our Green standards that will make Ipswich’s city centre one of the most sustainable in Australia. As the saying goes, Rome wasn’t built in a day and Ipswich’s CBD development won’t be either. As a city, we have achieved so much in such a short time frame and it’s tremendous to see those achievements recognised on the other side of the world. Much has been achieved but there is still so much to do. We’ve had a great start to 2015 which will be a year of growth as projects from all corners of our city get underway or near completion. From road improvements, new bridges, new residential estates, shopping centre expansions, a new hospital, industrial precincts welcoming new tenants and the calendar of community events in between, the City of Ipswich is buzzing with activity. I look forward to keeping you all informed as the year progresses and more importantly, hearing your feedback and ideas on making our city even better. Mayor Paul Pisasale City of Ipswich

Ipswich amongst Top 7 smartest communities It’s official! Ipswich has been nominated with six other cities to vie for the title of Most Intelligent Communities for 2015. The Intelligent Community Forum (ICF) in New York described the Top 7 communities as ‘revolutionary’ in their own way, and each had planned its future in a way that is consistent with its cultural identity, while using universally available digital tools and broadband technology. Mayor Paul Pisasale said Ipswich had been recognised previously by ICF as a global leader. “The first was in 2011 when the city was named in the top 21 intelligent communities. It is tremendous to now be named in the top 7 in the world. “The ICF judges stated that Ipswich was chosen owing to the Digital Hub project and Digital Enterprise program which teach residents and business digital skills, while at the same time Ipswich has started major redevelopment of the city centre. “Digital technologies are also being used to attract tenants in the CBD and to improve public safety.” Cr Pisasale said the city’s forward thinking in the mid 1990s with the creation of the first local government owned Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Global Info Links had paved the way for the city to be at the cutting edge of technology today. “We planned for the future when coal mines closed then, and we are planning for the future now. Another example of forward thinking is the Polaris Data Centre, born out of the vision

of the Ipswich Community Plan i2031.” Cr Pisasale said the ICF award was the culmination of a citywide effort. “I am so proud to be mayor of this great city because we did it as a community. “In coming weeks we will host a visit from one of the co-founders of the Intelligent Community Forum to provide a detailed look at our achievements,” he said. Co-founder of the ICF Lou Zacharilla said Ipswich was now just one step away from the title of the world’s Intelligent Community of the Year. “Being ranked as a Top 7 community puts you in a very exclusive club. “Our Top 7 communities show the rest of the world how to create a city that is successful economically, culturally and socially and is a place that people want to call home.” The Intelligent Community Forum Awards Program concludes in Toronto in June 2015 during the Intelligent Community Forum’s Annual Summit, where one of the Top 7 Intelligent Communities will succeed Toronto, Ontario, Canada, as 2015 Intelligent Community of the Year. The other six communities vying for the title are: Arlington Country in Virginia USA, Columbus in Ohio USA, Michell in South Dakota USA, New Taipei City in Taiwan, Rio De Janeiro in Brazil and Surrey in British Columbia, Canada.

Ipswich and the Somerset Region cast harsh judgment on the State LNP Government at the ballot box on Saturday 31 January. Campbell Newman and the LNP were elected as moderates but governed as extremists. They cut local jobs and local services after promising they wouldn’t. They spent millions of taxpayer funds in a failed and flawed effort to convince Queenslanders to accept asset sales. They boasted that local infrastructure would only be delivered if a local LNP member was returned. They undermined the proper checks and balances on government. They governed for the few at the expense of the many. While some of the massive swing away from the LNP was due to the unpopularity of Campbell Newman and Tony Abbott, the people of Ipswich and the Somerset Region overwhelmingly voted against harsh policies not disagreeable personalities. The Abbott Government’s deep and enduring unpopularity reflects this. Australians have seen through that Coalition government’s rhetoric. They remember the broken promises that there’d be no cuts to health or education. They see the impact of that government’s harsh and unfair policies on their families. They fear the future GP tax, cuts to pensions and $100,000 university degrees. No matter who leads the Federal Coalition Government these harsh and unfair policies will remain. However, in Queensland we have hope of a new fairer and more consultative government and I congratulate two members of that likely government, Labor’s Jennifer Howard and Jim Madden the newly elected members for State seats of Ipswich and Ipswich West respectively.

Sports mouthguards protect your teeth At Limestone Dental Group the dentists are passionate about the importance of wearing mouthguards in contact sports, having seen and treated many injuries which could have been prevented by wearing a mouthguard. Sports mouthguards are essential in most contact sports played today with some sporting organisations making their use compulsory. Did you know 31% of sporting injuries result in damage to the teeth, face and head, and 95% of injuries involving teeth result in permanent disfigurement. Unfortunately, the majority of mouthguards are moulded using a very soft material that does not fit properly and can dislodge easily, making them a potential choking hazard. These mouthguards provide a false sense of protection. Mouthguards that you simply boil and bite on are particularly unacceptable. Newer technology allowing mouthguards to be laminated under pressure are now considered the standard for mouth

protection from sports injury by the Dental Health Foundation of Australia. Depending on the type of sport and the player’s age, these mouthguards are constructed of 2-4 layers of ethyvinyl acetate, a tough plastic of varying thickness, each layer is separately heated, adapted and bonded under pressure. Name tags are placed between the layers for easy identification. Get protected — phone Limestone Dental Group on 3281 1466 to arrange for a custommade laminated mouthguard.

Creating leaders through opportunity Big things are happening at St. Mary’s College, and with the school set to double in physical size later this year, now is the right time to consider getting your daughter enrolled at a school that has a long history, but an even more exciting future. St. Mary’s College is a Catholic, secondary college committed to the education of young women in the Mercy Tradition. The educational experiences offered are holistic and designed to be values-based and life-giving. Each student is provided with opportunities to achieve to her potential and challenged to be woman of integrity. Located in the heart of the Ipswich CBD, St. Mary’s College is proud of its history and looking forward with excitement to the future as construction is under way on a range of specialist learning areas which are set to open in Term 3, and will be running at full capacity when new students arrive in 2016. Acting Principal Judith Finan (pictured right) has overseen the influx of Year Seven students arriving at St. Mary’s for the first time, and the school was well prepared for the event. “This has been the first year we’ve had Year Sevens, and we did a lot of work on the curriculum last year to make sure we

were ready. What we’re doing now is current practice,” Judith said. “We learned a lot from other schools that trialled having the Year Sevens, and many primary schools gave students the chance to be leaders before coming to St Mary’s College. “We are in the middle of construction which will be finished by the end of May, it’s a major project which hugs the bank of the Bremer River, and we will have our major specialist rooms taking in dance, hospitality, science, graphics, music and art. “We believe that 21st century leaders will need state of the art facilities, and this will nearly double our capacity in terms of specialist teaching. “We’ve had a very successful orientation program, all students that came here had already visited three times, met senior students and eased into the school year. All students have a pastoral care teacher and mixing with older students gives them a ‘big sister’ system, as we believe in the way we look after girls here at St.Mary’s,” Judith added. “All girls can be leaders, but leadership is about seeing an opportunity to show initiative and follow it through.” St. Mary’s College has a long history of teaching in the Mercy tradition, and the links with the Sisters of Mercy remain strong. In 1996 the last of the Sisters left the Convent, which is at the heart of the school grounds, but the ethos and values of the Sisters of Mercy continue to be a vital part of the college, parish and educational community in Ipswich. While the school is intimately associated with the parish and St. Mary’s Primary School, students are drawn from throughout Ipswich, outer Brisbane metropolitan and rural areas, with a big transport network for easy transport. “The Mercy tradition was started by Catherine McAuley who worked with underprivileged people in the 1800’s and

it was all about empowering people through education. That has been the ethos that we continue today. We value relationships, and value community, with a centre of a love of God and Jesus. “Emotionally and socially our students are supported, and when you have former students like Annastacia Palaszczuk, it is proof that we can help to create that leadership. “We find about 70% of our students currently go onto university with about another 30% going onto other forms of vocational training. We are finding science and health have been very popular career choices in the last couple of years and St. Mary’s has a strong academic program.” Enrolments are now being taken for 2016 and beyond. With the interest in the school due to the expansion, you can never be too early to secure a spot. “Now is the time to consider enrolling at St. Mary’s, as the momentum is there, “ Judith said. “We are going to have these brand new facilities open in Term 3 this year and it will make such a huge difference to the school and the students. “There will be a lot of interest in St. Mary’s and with a dance program which also started year, in giving students that creative element, it will tick many boxes for parents and students alike. “When your daughter walks out that door on Graduation Day, she will have had an opportunity with endless possibilities to find her gifts, and her talents in a supportive and safe environment to become the woman she wants to be.” For more information, to organise a tour of the school, or to get on the invitation list for the next open day, phone 3432 5444, email admincentre@stmarys.qld.edu.au or online at www.stmarys.qld.edu.au

FOCUS ON

Education in Queensland

EDUCATION Successful start to historic school year Thousands of students returned to Catholic schools across Brisbane Archdiocese with a special welcome and prayer for pioneering Year 7 students who made the move into high school. After four years of preparation, Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) secondary colleges welcomed more than 6000 new Year 7 students and almost 3000 Year 8 students. Executive Director Pam Betts said BCE was committed to ensuring people were the focus of the historic change. She said our secondary colleges were keen to involve parents in their children’s education. “The old saying, it takes a village to raise a child, is harder to do in our modern society, but our Catholic secondary colleges are ready to be a village for these new families,” she said. In our primary schools Prep students and their families were made to feel at “home” as other year levels welcomed back old friends and were introduced to new ones. Meanwhile nervous parents received kind words, a friendly smile and a cup of tea while their children spent the day getting to know their classmates and teachers, who helped them settle into their new environment through games and activities.

Education Queensland delivers high-quality and accessible public education to around 70 per cent of all Queensland school students through the state schooling system. The Department is responsible for almost 1300 schools staffed by more than 36,000 teachers and attended by almost 480,000 students. All state schools are coeducational. The school year usually runs from late January to mid December. It is divided into two semesters with two terms in each, and vacation breaks for Easter, winter, spring and summer. Parents are free to send their children to the school of their choice, depending on available places. Most schools hold classes from 9 am to 3 pm Monday to Friday, except for public and school holidays and studentfree days. In Preparatory Year children are able

to attend a non-compulsory, full-time Preparatory year of schooling. Children must be aged five by 30 June in the year they enrol. To enrol in Primary School children must be aged six by 30 June in the year they enrol in Year 1 in Queensland. For a child entering Year 1, schools require proof of the child’s date of birth, such as a birth certificate, passport or visa. Students are eligible to enter the first year of Queensland secondary schooling, Year 7, after completing six years of primary education.

Helping students achieve their best at Ipswich West Ipswich West State School is a vibrant, small school community in the heart of Ipswich offering a high quality education for Prep to Year 6 students. First opened in August 1861, the school is the fifth oldest state school still operating in Queensland. The heritage listed facilities create a unique school environment. A wellequipped computer lab and library, interactive whiteboards and air conditioning enhance students’ learning. High quality programs and practices are used for teaching, including explicit instruction, the Curriculum to the Classroom resources, Jolly Phonics, Jolly Grammar, Magic Words, Spelling Mastery and Levelled Literacy Intervention. The literacy and numeracy development of all children at Ipswich West is monitored using a comprehensive assessment framework to ensure all students are developing essential knowledge and skills. Students are taught by specialist staff for

instrumental music (Years 4-6), physical education, visual arts, cooking, gardening and Japanese. They enjoy participating in the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program, planting, growing and harvesting fruit and vegetables in the school garden, and cooking their produce with a professional chef in the purpose-built four bay kitchen. Ipswich West’s four qualities – respect, responsibility, resilience and safety – foster a safe, supportive, disciplined learning environment. WestMAC Principal Mr Geoff McLay said the College is offering a wide range of scholarships to students who demonstrate high achievement in their chosen field plus qualities of self-confidence, optimism, high selfesteem and a commitment to personal excellence. “Academic Scholarships are available to students who possess outstanding achievement in literacy and numeracy, as well as in at least three other subjects, while maintaining a healthy life balance with family, sporting involvement, clubs, youth groups, hobbies and other pursuits,” Mr McLay said. “There are also Specialist Scholarships in art, agricultural studies, dance, drama, sport, equestrian, language (Chinese or Japanese) and music (choral or instrumental) which are offered due to the breadth of activities available at WestMAC,” he said. Successful applicants who are not currently enrolled at WestMAC may elect to commence at WestMAC in Semester 2 in 2015. The 2015 / 2016 Scholarships will attract a 25 to 70 per cent remission on tuition fees for the duration of the student’s schooling to the end of Year 12. The amount of

remission on tuition fees is dependent upon the student’s ability to meet the criteria. Mr McLay said WestMAC provides students with a safe, friendly environment that nurtures their unique gifts and abilities in the pursuit of individual excellence. “We know that equipping students for success in school life and beyond requires academic, physical, social, emotional and spiritual preparation,” Mr McLay said. “WestMAC offers students a vast array of extra-curricular activities while our Pastoral Care Program creates a safe, friendly environment in which students are given the right balance of challenge and support,” he said.

Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School (IGGS) has recorded outstanding academic results in 2014 with nine students achieving an OP1, representing 12% of OP-eligible students, the highest percentage of students at the School to achieve an OP1. One in three IGGS students (36%) received an OP 1 to 5 (compared to the State average of 21%), with 96% achieving an OP 1 to 15, as compared to the State average of 79%. The median OP for the students was 7 and, for eligible boarding students, the median was an OP6. Furthermore, six students completed a Diploma in Business during their senior year and many others received a range of Certificates. Acording to IGGS Principal, Dr Peter Britton, the School’s academic statistics are impressive and they continue the trend of year-on-year improvement. “These pleasing academic outcomes are a result of diligent day and boarding students; positive, personalised programs; high performing teachers; great resources and facilities; and, a strong, supportive, family-orientated community,” Dr Britton said. “The results follow this year’s excellent Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 NAPLAN results and they will provide the Seniors with many opportunities to study at tertiary educational institutions in Queensland, interstate and overseas, and find rewarding work placements,” he said. While there is a strong academic focus at IGGS, it is important to remember that Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School encourages day and boarding students to attain an all-round education by obtaining an appreciation of all academic and cultural arenas, participating in sport and community service and, above all, developing good personal and social skills,” Dr Britton said. “Many of IGGS’s Open and Age sporting teams placed highly in the elite QGSSSA sports competition and many individual sportswomen won medals at Australian, Queensland and Regional sporting competitions. “Students displayed their art in public galleries, successfully competed in music, dance, drama, foreign language and public

speaking competitions, and won National, State and Regional Science, Mathematics and Technology competitions. Giving back to the community builds character and IGGS’s students have excelled in community service,” he said. These activities will be on show at the 2015 Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School Open Day on Saturday 14 March 2015 from 9.00am to 1.00pm. Interested families can register online at www.iggs.qld.edu.au, email enrolment@ igggs.qld.edu.au or call Mrs Wendy Levkovich on 07 3454 4401 for further information. Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School strives to develop confident, well-educated young women with the School’s teachers resolute in their efforts to provide every student with a positive, personalised education. Boarding is available from Years 5 to 12.

What to consider when choosing a new school The education you provide for your children is one of the most important decisions you will ever make, for it is that education that will shape the person they are when they walk out the door on graduation day. There are many factors you should consider when looking at choosing a school, and with so many quality educational facilities in the Ipswich region, you may feel spoilt for choice. Some of the things to consider may include: *Look locally – including a bus or train to your child’s day not only adds to their hours, but also adds expense, yet it can assist in building friendships, so take into consideration the distance to the school and travelling times. Does the school have their own bus service or transport? *What are your priorities? – consider things such as the affordability of fees, and pastoral care or educational philosophy. Are these things important to you? Will the school have the topic range to suit your child? Once you decide your priorities, it will help narrow down your choices. *Attend Open Days – this is one of the best ways to see a school in action and meet with the teachers. Joining your son or daughter on a tour of the school will allow them to form their own opinion on what an average day will be like, and their response may help make your mind up!

*Does the school have a good reputation? - checking the MySchool website and asking everyone you know about their experiences with a school will allow you to get a ‘feel’ for the school’s reputation. Don’t be afraid to ask around. At the end of the day, it is the students that are the end product, so maybe talk with students already at the school and see what they think! *Ask your child where they want to go – kids will always talk amongst themselves, plus friends come and go. But open and frank discussions with your child will help to see what they want out of their schooling, and what’s important to them. At the end of the day, it is mum and dad’s decision, but use your child’s input to form your final decision. On the next few pages are some local schools who are taking right NOW enrolments for 2016 and onwards, Now that the Year Seven intake for the first time in 2015 is over, schools are now looking to build on this and invest in the future. Is your child part of that vision?

Springfield Anglican College enjoys positive start to 2015 The 2015 School year has commenced in a most positive manner for The Springfield Anglican College with enrolments very strong, several new facilities ready for occupation and new learning opportunities introduced. Demand for places at the College has been extremely strong with a number of year groups at capacity. The College has a capped upper limit of enrolments, with approximately 500 students on each campus. This upper limit is set to ensure each student receives the individual attention they deserve. With the completion of the new Creative Arts Precinct, Year Seven classrooms and change facilities, these spacious purpose-built facilities provide a new array of learning opportunities for students in Years Seven to Twelve, facilitated by a range of different technologies. This year the College has also introduced French in Year Eight, to compliment the learning of Mandarin Chinese, which occurs from Prep to Year Eight and becomes an

elective subject in Years Nine to Twelve. For students in Years Four to Ten the ‘Altitude’ programme provides extension and enrichment opportunities for selected students predominately in relation to literacy, numeracy and science. In Year Ten a ‘Special Projects’ trail is being introduced. Students will be grouped according to their identified Character Strengths fundamentally placing like-minded students together to see if doing so results in more successful outcomes. Students will identify a project they would like to undertake which could be academic in nature, Collegebased or community minded. Mr Steve Croft Head of College

USQ pathway leads to success If you’ve ever contemplated further study, there are many pathways into the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), it is just about taking the first step. USQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Jan Thomas said anyone who has the drive and desire to attain a university degree should have a place. “Everyone should have the opportunity to access tertiary education, which is why we offer a range of preparation and alternative entry options,” she said. “Best of all, successful completion of these programs guarantee you entry into selected USQ undergraduate degrees.” There are also a number of support services that can assist in guiding you towards the appropriate career path like The USQ Choices: Pathways and Partnerships Service. Last year, USQ partnered with the Multicultural Development Agency (MDA) to deliver careers counselling and employment advice to migrant and refugee families in the community.
The USQ Choices project aims to raise career aspirations of adults from a low-socio economic background, Indigenous and non-English speaking adults.
“Choices provide one-on-one career counselling support and career development workshops for post school aged individuals

and capacity building workshops for staff in community agencies to allow them to better support their clients make well informed career choices,” Professor Thomas said. Combat jets set to steal the air show at Avalon Two of the most powerful combat jets in the western world will display their power and precision at the Australian International Airshow 2015 at Avalon, Victoria this month. F/A-18F Super Hornets from RAAF Amberley and F-22A Raptor jets from the US Air Force will take part in a dazzling flying display that will include precision handling and simulated combat manoeuvres. The RAAF contingent will be the largest to ever participate in the Avalon-based event, and will include a KC-30A tanker transport and C-17 Globemaster II also from RAAF Amberley. Of course, no air show would be complete without the Roulettes flying their PC -9 trainer aircraft. Other RAAF aircraft taking part include Hawk 127, King Air 350, C-130J Hercules, E-7 Wedgetail, P-3 Orion, and the Heron Remotely Piloted Aircraft recently returned from flying missions in Afghanistan. The international event runs during the final week of February, with three trade days followed by the public sessions on Friday afternoon, then all day Saturday and Sunday. A major highlight will be the appearance of the world’s most advanced stealth jet fighter, the F-22 Raptor.

AIR SHOW A US Air Force Raptor Display Team, with two aircraft, two pilots and a full support crew will travel from home base in Langley Virginia to Australia to perform a high energy handling display, and will be on static display for up close inspection on the ground. In terms of speed, manoevrability, firepower and its ability to engage in air-to-air combat and conduct ground attack missions, the F-22A Raptor can maintain air superiority against any adversary. This awesome combat capability combined with stealth – using shaping and radar absorbing materials in its airframe –

make the Raptor very difficult to detect and track by radar. Another unique feature is the F-22’s ability to fly for extended periods in ‘supercruise’ at almost twice the speed of sound, without engaging its afterburners. The F-22s will be just a part of a large and highly impressive United States contingent including a high flying legend in the B-52 Stratofortress – one of the most durable warplane ever built. Even though it began as a 1950s Cold War era high altitude bomber, which also conducted massive bombing raids during the Vietnam War, the B-52 has undergone many upgrades over the past 50 plus years. In fact, it is the only US Air Force type to carry cruise missiles. B-52s also served with distinction in the Gulf Wars and in Afghanistan. Showing its range, one B-52 will fly direct from its overseas base at Guam on the Friday of Airshow week, perform an eye-catching

display then, without landing, return to home base, a round trip of 16 hours, while second aircraft will remain on static display at Avalon all week for those wanting to get up close with this legendary leviathans of the sky. One overseas contingent that will thrill the crowd will be the debut of the ‘Black Knights’ – the Republic of Singapore Air Force’s world famous precision aerobatic team flying the F-16 Fighting Falcon. The Black Knights’ distinctly marked aircraft, red and white stripes (Singapore’s national colours) with a black chess piece knight emblazoned on the tail, make it highly recognisable. This high octane aerobatic routine consists of no fewer than 18 separate rolls, passes, twists and loops. Vintage aircraft also play an important part, with a proud veteran
of the Battle for Australia in a faithfully restored Hudson bomber among the many classic warbirds to grace the skies at Airshow 2015. clockwise from opposite page: An F-22A ‘Raptor’ fighter aircraft of the US Air Force shows its raw power on take off in front of the crowd. An F/A-18F Super Hornet of No 1 Squadron (RAAF) washes off condensation on its control surfaces as it climbs vertically in full afterburner. Classic fighters of the past fly by: a Gloster Meteor G.8 of the Korean War era and an F-86 ‘Sabre’ fighter jet. A large crowd at Avalon 2013 wander through the aircraft static display area getting up close to aircraft and aircrews.

LOTS OF

NOW THAT’S

ENTERTAINMENT

GIVEAWAYS

*Bless you Sam Smith, winner of 4 Grammys, for reminding us that sometimes even when it appears that life is not working out for you — in the long run it truly is. Smith dedicated his win for Record of the Year to his former boyfriend: “I want to thank the man who this record is about, who I fell in love with last year. Thank you so much for breaking my heart because you got me four Grammys.”

THAT’S

SHOWBIZ WITH 97.3 FM’s LOUISE

*Sam Smith cleaned up at the 57th Annual Grammys this year – nominated for 6 awards and taking home 4 (including Best New Artist and Song of the Year: Stay With Me). Other big winners included Pharell Williams who picked up two awards (Best Pop Solo Performance: Happy(live) & Best Urban Contemporary Album: Girl) and Beyonce also picked up two awards (Best R&B Performance & Best R&B Song for Drunk in Love). But the biggest surprise of the night came when Beck picked up Album of the Year for Morning Phase – and Kanye West expressed what we were all thinking but were too polite to say: It should’ve been Beyonce. *In other awards ceremony news: The BAFTA’s happened! The British film awards are often seen as a predictor for the Oscars and The Grand Budapest Hotel was the biggest winner of the night scoring 5 awards (Best Original Screenplay; Best Original Music; Best Production Design; Best Costume Design; Best Makeup & Hair). The Theory of Everything, Whiplash and Boyhood all tied with 3 awards each — Although Boyhood did take out Best Film and Best Director. *Justin Timberlake recently turned 34 and to celebrate he posted a pic on Instagram of the present he’s most looking forward to in 2015 — A picture of wife Jessica Biel’s baby bump: “Thank you EVERYONE for the Bday wishes! This year, I’m getting the GREATEST GIFT EVER. CAN’T WAIT. #BoyOrGirl #YouNeverKnow #WeDontEvenKnow #WeAreTakingBets”

*Director J.J. Abrams has dropped a few hints about the next Star Wars movie at the Visual Effects Society Awards, and it looks like the film will be staying true to its roots. He said: “There are obviously an enormous amount of CG effects in the film, and I can’t wait for you to see the combination. But it was very important that we build as many sets as we could and that the film have a tangible, sort of authentic quality that you believed that these things were actually happening in a real space with real sunlight, if it was an exterior scene, or if we could build a big portion of a scene and not have anything be blue screen, do it where we could. It was a very important piece of work.” *Nick Jonas may be dating one of the world’s most beautiful women (Former Miss Universe Olivia Culpo) but he’s happy to embrace being considered a gay icon: “I don’t know if I’d necessarily call myself a gay icon. But my goal in the last year was to expand and grow as a person and an artist, and embracing my gay fans was a priority. Some of my gay friends have thanked me for that, and that’s a really good feeling” *Astro Boy is heading back to the big screen again — this time as a Live-Action feature. Australian company Animal Logic are behind 18 Ipswich Life

the reboot. A rep said:”We’ve seen him as a manga, an anime and an animated movie but we’ve never seen him as a live-action movie or him as a superhero. We actually see him in the same league as Iron Man.” Astro Boy’s last incarnation was the 3D computer animated 2009 film. *The Fifty Shades of Grey sequels have now been confirmed (although we always suspected as much). The news was disclosed at a fan screening. Expect to see Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan reprise their roles in Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed over the next few years. *Beyonce and Jay Z may be releasing a collaborative album this year! Producer Detail was asked about it on the Grammys red carpet and said: “Me and Beyoncé and Jay Z are actually doing something together this year.” He was then asked for more info and he added, “When you think of Jay and Bey together, you think album.” *And Johnny Depp and girlfriend Amber Heard have tied the knot in a secret ceremony in their LA home. They got engaged in 2012. Till next time… Louise

MONEY & PROPERTY

MATTERS The Finance Plan for 2015 BY MARK BOURIS

Most Australians go through the holidays and decide on resolutions for the new year. Resolutions are fine, but for most people it’s the financial housekeeping items that can make the biggest difference. Here are a few: Mortgage: if you have a mortgage, it’s probably your largest monthly outgoing. Start the year by ensuring that you are paying no more than you have to. The difference in repayments between a $400,000 25-year loan at 5.7 per cent and 4.7 per cent, is more than $200 a month. Also, ensure that your loan is right for your circumstances: offset accounts, redraw, interest-only and lines of credit are valuable features, but only if you use them. Savings: if you haven’t bought a home — and you want to this year — you’ll need to save a deposit. Have a look at your savings plan: why did it work or not work in 2014? Assess it honestly and make a new plan to save. Small, regular deposits work better than occasional lump sums; a separate savings account is better than using your daily transaction account; high interest and no/ low fees make a real difference; and making a luxury-sacrifice to your savings is always effective. For example, drop your café coffees every day and bank the money you save. Income: financial housekeeping has to

include your earnings. If you want to earn more this year than last, you have to work out what needs to change: do you need new skills? A new qualification? A new employer? A new industry? Do you need to start your own business, or just do your job better? Maybe you have to communicate better with your employer, and just make your case for a pay rise? Costs: most households can find simple savings, ranging from phone plans and electricity usage to vehicle mileage and the eating-out budget. Many small cuts can add up to a large saving at the end of the year, giving you more options with your income. The great thing about cutting costs? It can be as large as a pay-rise, but it’s tax-free. Super: make an audit of your superannuation and assess whether your current contributions are sufficient for retirement. Use the online calculators to see how you can boost retirement savings by putting in your own contributions; use the comparison sites to see what your fees cost you — they range from 0.7 per cent of your balance to around 2.0 per cent, and this is a big difference over 20-30 years. Perhaps see a financial adviser? Control debt: are you being smart about your debts? High-interest debt just compounds against you, so doing nothing is a poor option. Make a plan to pay-off the debt, the most expensive first. Make a schedule and stick to it. The financial housekeeping is never glamorous. But if you address it early, it can set you up for a successful year. Good luck. Upgrades add to Mazda6 appeal After winning numerous global awards — including a podium placing in the 2013 World Car of the Year — New Mazda6 is even more appealing. The Mazda6 exterior, like the New CX-5, has taken the next step in its design evolution, adding an updated front end that offers a stronger look and greater flow thanks to the addition of five horizontal fins that run through to Mazda-first LED headlamps. Including fog and rear combination LEDs and the addition of newly designed 19 inch five spoke wheels¹, there are two striking new Mazda6 colours, Sonic Silver Metallic and Titanium Flash Mica. While the exterior changes offer a bolder and tauter design, it is the premium interior upgrades that elevate Mazda6 even further. In addition, Mazda has added to its impressive array of i-ACTIVSENSE safety

technologies (on selected models). Adaptive LED Headlamps (ALH) improves visibility at night, Lane-keep Assist System (LAS) assists the driver to maintain their intended course, Driver Attention Alert (DAA) alerts drivers to fatigue and decreased alertness, while Smart City Brake Support (Forward/Reverse) (SCBS F/R) adds rearward detection to help reduce the likelihood of an accident. New Mazda6 also offers Smart Brake Support (SBS) and Mazda Radar Cruise Control. There are two powertrains available including the SKYACTIV-G 2.5 litre petrol and SKYACTIV-D 2.2 litre diesel engine, both of which are mated to a SKYACTIV-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission.

Tata is the brand from India, which is set for huge growth in Australia and around the world, with a range of vehicles to suit your needs and especially your budget. Tata first entered the Australian market in 2008, and the family owned multinational is based in Mumbai, and is India’s best known global brand with plans to become a powerhouse in Aussie homes. In a market that has seen huge growth in previously unheard of brands like Hyundai and Proton, the new Tata Xenon represents fantastic value for money in motoring. The newly arrived Tata Xenon comes with a 2.2 litre Turbo Diesel engine, with keyless entry, ABS brakes, Electronic Stability Control, Traction Control, power steering and best of all, a 4 Star ANCAP rating with ‘Tough Cover” as an added bonus! “The Tough Cover gives our Tata customers peace of mind,” said Assistant Sales Manager Steve Dieperink. “Tough cover gives customers a full 4 years peace of mind, with a 4 year/100,000 factory warranty, 4 years roadside assistance, and 4 year/60,000k capped price servicing! All this adds up to great value in a quality vehicle.

“With three body types, two drive types, 5 colours to choose from and plenty of genuine Tata accessories, there is a Xenon to suit every situation,” Steve said. “On the road with the family, working on site, going bush or towing a caravan, boat or trailer, the Xenon is made tough for Aussie conditions. “The Tata Xenon first appeared locally in late 2013 but upgrades in September 2014 were significant as these enabled the dualcab model to score a four-star safety rating in local ANCAP testing,” Steve added. The Xenon is on display at Bremer Ford in Dinmore now, and is available as a Dual Cab 4x2 for just $25,990 driveway, or in a dual cab 4x4 at just $28,990. “We are very excited to have this brand now available in Ipswich and we know that locals are going to love it. “As the models grow in the next few months we hope to bring more and more Tata models to the local market, which are priced to suit anyone’s budget and with a 4 year peace of mind warranty, it’s a brand well worth checking out,” Steve said. To book a test drive or for more information, call Tata Motors Ipswich on 3816 6700, or visit www.qtata.com.au.
