BLOCKBUSTER

MOVIES

The man behind ‘Big Hero 6’ It is the biggest day of the year for moviegoers, with several blockbuster’ opening on Boxing Day. If a movie is released on that day, you can be pretty sure it’s going to be huge, and the new Disney animated movie Big Hero 6, made in collaboration with Marvel, is set to pack in audiences around the country. Ipswich Life was lucky enough to catch up with Roy Conli, the movie’s producer who also helped to bring Treasure Planet, Tangled, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame to the big screen. Based on a Marvel comic book set in Japan, the story is set in the fictional town of ‘San Fransokyo’, a mix of San Francisco and Tokyo, and the work that goes into creating a city is mind blowing. “San Franksokyo was a bit of a joke at first, it was a temporary name, but in the end it seemed to be the right place so we kept it,” Roy said. “The cool thing with this is that we premiered at the Tokyo International Film Festival and I was there doing press for it. The Japanese were so excited about San Fransokyo because they felt it was so authentic. They are so tired of seeing western film companies create stereotypical worlds in Asia. The ‘mash up’ seemed to work. “We had one huge model, a city that included thousands of people, 83,000 buildings, 250,000 trees, and at least 215,000 street lights. The crowds in this film are amazing. We can literally model and create characters very quickly and populate it in a way that can give you the same vibrancy you get in Tokyo or San Francisco. “The concept for Big Hero 6 came from the film’s director Don Hall, who came up with the idea of adapting a Marvel comic book into a Disney animated film.

“So we rang Marvel and they literally opened the vault to Don and he found Big Hero 6. He was taken with the spirit of the piece and the fact it was a Tokyo based super hero team. “We went back to Marvel and they said ‘do what you will with it’. We wanted to put it in the Disney universe and create this fantastic world, and as opposed to a Japanese team, we wanted to do a multicultural experience.” Big Hero 6 is the tale of Hiro, a kid who loves to invent things, and without giving too much away, finds himself spending time with Baymax, a robot invented by Hiro’s big brother. For the first time, it’s the ‘Nerds’ who are the heroes. “It’s becoming evident that the nerds are taking over the earth. For me, this is a celebration of intelligence. One of the things I’m most proud of is that yes, they are super heroes…but that’s due to their intelligence, they make things. “As a producer, my job is essentially to get the director’s vision on screen, and a film is a working process that’s a joy to make. We literally will work

on story up until the last minute, as late as June/ July this year we were still working on it.” So, what does Roy put down as the things that make a great animated movie? “I do think that with animation we have to build the three vital ingredients. One, is that we create a world people want to visit; and two is to build a story that is engaging. We knew from day one that we were going to have a young man that suffers tragedy, then is repaired essentially with his brothers invention. Third, and the most important ingredient, is to build characters that you fall in love with, and I think everyone has fallen in love with Baymax and Hiro.” Since Disney purchased Pixar, the studio’s fortunes have totally turned around, and Roy attributes that to Pixar’s John Lasseter (the man behind hits like Toy Story and Monsters Inc.). “Nothing changed when John came, he didn’t bring in a new crew, we’re the same people who have been there all along. He brought in the ‘story trust’, who are a group of people who are the best storytellers in the studio and that allows directors to bounce around ideas. “It’s so damn funny and joyous, I’m just in love with this project.”

While most of us look forward to sharing Christmas Day with friends and family, there are some with no one to spend the holiday with, or are struggling to make ends meet. To make a difference to those people, the Ipswich Awakening community organisation is again hosting their community dinner for people who would otherwise be alone, at the North Ipswich Reserve Corporate Centre, 43 The Terrace North Ipswich from 3:00pm – 6:30pm on Christmas Day, December 25. Hans and Ruth Booji said that those with nowhere to go, who are lonely, or just can’t afford a Christmas meal are all welcome. “We don’t want them to spend Christmas by themselves,” Hans said. “Last year we had a large turnout of around 150 people, and expectations are for the same or greater this year. “There will be a festive two-course meal with all the trimmings prepared and served by many volunteers from across the community and local churches. A nativity photo booth where guests can dress up and have their photo taken will be a key activity this year. In addition there will be carols, games and a gift for every guest. “There is strength in a community, when people value consideration for others. We want to thank the Ipswich City Council, and the many local businesses, churches and volunteers who have been willing to donate and give their time to make sure that those

in need this Christmas enjoy a fabulous day with all the trimmings.” You can help through a financial donation. LIVE show is a ‘Thriller’ STAR CHAT CELEBRITY NEWS

While Michael Jackson has left this world, the adoration for the mega star, that was, remains strong. Fans are set for an absolute treat soon when the “Thriller LIVE” tribute show opens at QPAC in Brisbane.

Thriller opens in January at QPAC for a limited season. Tickets at www.qtix.com.au

This live show featuring all the hits of Jackson is a tribute show that began in the UK and has so far travelled to 28 countries with over four million tickets sold. Returning to Australia in the lead role is a veteran of stage shows, with a name you can’t help but read in a Spanish accent. Try this: his full name is Miguel Alfonso Ramon Legara Ayesa… but being an Aussie, where Robert becomes ‘Robbo’ and the bottle shop becomes the ‘Bottlo’… he’s just know as Mig Ayesa. “It’s a big name I must admit, and it does roll off the tongue, especially if you’re Spanish, but this is Australia so everyone calls me ‘Mig’,” he said during a break from rehearsals in Sydney. “It really is a long tour, and it’s a good one… basically all of Australia except Darwin and Tassie, plus some dates in New Zealand. “It’s a hard six week rehearsal period as the dancing is very precise and we want to get it down pat. I joined them in early November in the UK as its going to the UK first, in the West End, then it’s a couple of weeks off then we’re touring Australia. “By the time we get home we’ll be in top shape and ready to roll!” Mig says the show is not an impersonation, but a celebration of the man and his music. Jackson still holds the honour of the best selling album in history, as Thriller has notched up certified sales of 42.4 million copies. To give you an idea how amazing that number is, Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon sits at number two…with 22.7 million certified sales. Mig hopes that people can put aside all the mud thrown at the star later in his life, and just remember Jackson for what he was… a supreme talent. “He was the biggest thing in the world, there was no one bigger than him,” Mig said. “He was already popular when Off the Wall came out, but when Thriller was released, the biggest selling album of all time, everyone wanted to work with him. He had the best of the best around him, and they were flawless. Thriller is

a combination of such a pool of talent. He was everyone’s hero at the time. “It was totally devastated when he died. It was just so tragic, I felt like he’d had so much bad press late in his career which I felt was unfair and many were trying to just get something out of him. “He lived in a different world where his rules didn’t apply to everyone else… he was just being himself. When he died I just thought it was so unfair, on the verge of that comeback tour, and especially for a friend of mine who was a dancer on that show, an Aussie. Then bang. It was all over. Such a tragedy. “I think many people come to see this show because we all missed the chance to see him live late in his career. We aren’t trying to impersonate him, but celebrating his life. People often get emotional at the show, many feel like they were robbed of the chance to see him live.” Mig has toured the world with shows like this and We Will Rock You, and is excited to finally have the chance to play to his own country. “I’ve been very blessed with shows. I like to do projects that I enjoy, and this is definitely one of them. I’ve been a lifelong fan of Michael Jackson, and I know its going to do great business. “It really is a tribute to his life and music, with five singers, sixteen dancers, a nine piece band, lights, pyrotechnics, video screens… it chronicles his life and die-hard fans shouldn’t miss it,” Mig said. “I’m not a trained dancer, so it takes me a bit longer to learn these things, specially in my mid 40s but some of the movements mean you get a bit possessed, and you find yourself doing moves you do out of habit from a lifetime of watching Michael - like the Beat It routine. When I do that I’m living my childhood fantasy! “Here I am doing the movements from the video. How many people get the chance to do that on stage?” Thriller opens at QPAC in January

The Listening Post With Ian Berry MP MEMBER FOR IPSWICH

As the year draws to a close, we all reflect on the year that was. As individuals and as a community, we look back on the events that shaped 2014 and how far we have come. For Ipswich, 2014 was a big year with big gains in health, law and order, education and transport and whilst we this improvements have impacted on our everyday lives; there is much more to be done. I would like to thank everyone I have met and worked with, throughout the year. Your ongoing contribution to our community is what is keeps Ipswich, charging ahead. Our community is only as strong as the people that keep it moving. As we come together this festive season, please spare a thought for those less fortunate and those who are spending Christmas alone. We must also remember the countless families across Ipswich whose loved one is deployed overseas with the Australian Defence Force. We pray that they return safely to their families and thank them for their service to our country. 2015 is a year that holds great promise and I share your enthusiasm as we look forward to the wonderful developments that will continue to build a stronger Ipswich. Together we can continue to shape our community into something greater by leaving a legacy of opportunity for those who follow. This will require hard work but that hasn’t stopped our community before. This summer has already seen wild weather and whilst we prepare to take a well-earned holiday, we must remain vigilant in our personal preparation to face what challenges nature may throw at us. Get ready now by visiting www.getready. qld.gov.au I sign off this year by wishing you all a Merry Christmas and happy and joyous New Year. See you in 2015!

Home swimming pools now need to be included on the Queensland Government’s Pool Safety Register, and that includes portable pools. Pool safety laws require owners to construct and maintain a compliant fence around their swimming pool regardless of when the pool was installed. Selling or leasing a property? You must obtain a pool safety certificate from a licensed pool certifier stating the pool complies with the appropriate safety standards. These laws are designed to prevent children from drowning, and it is a source of frustration for campaigners to see portable pools sold cheaply by retailers which often sit in unfenced in front or backyards. “There are warnings on the box, and it is compulsory thanks to the ACCC, and Hannah’s Foundation was involved in that legislation,” said Katherine Plint from the charity. “Often those warnings are ignored, so we need to get the message out there that nothing can replace supervision and barriers. “The legislation in Queensland is that any water level over 30cm has to be fenced. “Any pool in a backyard is a danger. You’re better off saving your money and for a few bucks come down to the local pool where the kids are fully supervised,” Mayor Pisasale said. “If the pool can be filled with water to a depth of 300 millimetres or more, it is classified as a regulated swimming pool.” Below L-R: Lawrie ‘Do the Five’ Lawrence, Mayor Pisasale, Harry & Katherin Plint from Hannah’s Foundation, and Cr Andrew Antoniolli at the Bundamba Swim Centre

Ipswich youth will be given the chance to join in the magic of Christmas at a series of special workshops and drop in ‘MakerSpace’ activities at Ipswich Libraries during the summer holidays. Councillor David Pahlke said the Library would be going MakerSpace crazy again these school holidays with a large number of activities on offer to explore this innovative concept. “The MakerSpace Program is a successful global phenomenon in public libraries where participants have an opportunity to develop their critical and creative thinking in a fun, welcoming and creative environment through sharing, making and tinkering. “Fundamental to the success of the program is the opportunity to collaborate with likeminded makers.MakerSpaces are basically spaces for DIY activities with a science, arts and crafts and technology bent,” he said. The aim of the Makerspace Program is to use everyday materials including recycled and upcycled materials and technology to create something unique and practical while developing skills of critical thinking, creativity and innovation. Ipswich Libraries are again offering a range of free or low-cost activities each school holidays. “This program is extremely popular with young people throughout the Ipswich area and we expect to be booked out quickly for many of the activities. “I urge parents and children to take a look at the program for December and January as soon as they can and book in to ensure they don’t miss out on the workshops or movie on offer.” Cr Pahlke said a special feature of the December program would be the chance to help build a Christmas Village at each of our branches. The Christmas Village construction site will be available from 1pm to 4pm on weekdays to encourage families to visit, and from December 15 we will revert to the usual Drop In MakerSpace timeslot of 10am to 2pm. “People will be able to choose from a variety of materials to construct an item to add to our model Christmas Village. I have lived in Blair all my life. I went to school here, played sport here and raised my family here. I am proud to have been the Federal Member since November 2007. And I remain passionate about continuing to deliver for Ipswich and the Somerset Region for many years to come. As 2014 comes to an end, it is good to reflect on all we have achieved over the past year. This year we opened the $94 million upgrade to the Blacksoil Interchange. I will continue working to deliver infrastructure funding, most particularly for the Ipswich Motorway, Darra to Rocklea upgrade and the Brisbane Valley Highway. We have seen the positive impact of over $110 million in new school halls, libraries, trade training centres other education investment by the former Federal Labor government. I have been working hard to ensure the future vitality of Ipswich and the Somerset Region through continued investment in infrastructure, education, health and local job creation. In 2015 I will keep working with my Federal Labor colleagues, the Ipswich City Council and key stakeholders within the community to ensure growth is managed in the best possible way. I will continue to pursue a National Disability Insurance Scheme, so that local people living with disability, their families and carers, will receive the fair go they deserve. In 2015 I hope to meet many more of you as I continue my regular mobile offices into local communities, shopping centres and neighbourhoods. Feel free to say hello and let me know what is on your mind. I trust you will take the time this festive season to enjoy this beautiful region, its natural attractions, vibrant shopping and delightful eateries. On behalf of my wife Carolyn, and daughters Alex and Jacqui, and from my staff, I wish you all a safe, peaceful and joyous Christmas season. And remember, you can contact me anytime by email Shayne.Neumann.MP@aph.gov.au; or call the office on 3201 5300. Warm Regards, Shayne

by Darren Cresswell For more than a decade Daryn Cresswell gave his all for the Sydney Swans. Over a career spanning 244 games he was smart, strong, unflinchingly brave and unwaveringly loyal. But when the curtain fell, things changed fast. Embroiled in a world of fast earns, chronic gambling and entangled in a web of lies, Cresswell lost everything - his wife, his money, friendships and, in the end, almost his life. In a very real way it was only jail that could save him. In Crezza, Daryn tells his story, one of hardearned highs and self-inflicted lows. It’s the story of a driven man who risked everything and lost. It’s also the story of a man who clawed his way back. (Random House)

SHOWBIZ WITH 97.3 FM’s LOUISE

It looks like a sequel to Frozen will be happening. Although there is no official announcement, Idina Menzel (Elsa) revealed (when asked about a sequel): ‘They’re all in the works.’ And the stage show? “Ah, yeah sure… Not the stage show — I don’t know what will happen with that — but the movie hopefully. We’ll see. I’m just going along for the ride.” Plus a Frozen short film is scheduled for release in March – to be played in cinemas before the live-action version of Cinderella. *Daniel Craig will be back as 007 in the next James Bond flick. The movie will be called ‘SPECTRE’ which stands for Special Executor for Counter-Intelligence, Terrorism, Revenge and Extortion. *Scarlett Johansson is married! She secretly tied the know with her partner Romain in a ceremony after the birth of their daughter in September. Speculation is the wedding took place in a remote location in the US. *Disney has it’s sight set on another interpretation of Robin Hood: Nottingham and Wood. Rumour is they are looking at a Pirates of the Carribean style adaptation of the material this time (no animated foxes and snivelling lions anywhere in sight).

*With the final Hobbit flick about to open in cinemas, director Peter Jackson has been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame near other A-lister stars like Steven Speilberg and Nicole Kidman. * Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon are set to star in a Tv show based on the best-selling Australian novel ‘Big Little Lies” by Liane Moriarty. Enjoying an incredible beer is a treat and an experience in itself, and one I actively seek out on a regular basis! But pair the right beer with the perfect meat and you can create an entirely new way to enjoy said beer that will evolve the flavours of both components. To get those mouths watering, I have four ideal beer and meat pairings to share. First up, chilli beer sticks and Feral Hop Hog IPA is a classic pairing. Hop Hog has the ideal level of carbonation and bitterness to cleanse the palate between bites, and it’ll cut through the saltiness of the beef. The meat should be seasoned with a little chilli and pepper, which is the ultimate pairing for Hop Hog as IPA is a best friend for spiciness. Red wine Chorizo and James Squire ‘Jack of Spades’ Porter is my next ultimate pairing. The wine element adds a very subtle dark, red fruit character in the Chorizo which is reflected and balanced by the Porter, and there is an overall earthy tone to both the beer and meat that compliment one another beautifully. Next up is Little Creatures Rogers’ which is just exceptional with pork. It’s a complex beer, with subtle but delicious fruitiness that is really great with piggy cuts. There is also a lovely chewy sweetness to Rogers, which provides a good balance for that sinewy,

muscular nature of the meat. Long finishes abound. 4 Pines Kölsch and salami is my final pairing. This German style lager has a lovely, refreshing crispness and lightness; it’s quite zingy and zippy and a bit citrusy, which marries well with a salami’s sharpness, and the delicate saltiness is cleansed on the palate by the clean, bubbly lager. 4 Pines Kölsch also has a bright, light hoppiness, which offers some piney aromas that fit pleasantly with overall flavour of the meat! Hopefully now you are better aware of how well meat and beer compliment each other. If you now have a hankering for a tasty beer with a lovely serve of meat, head down to Char’d Steakhouse at the Prince Alfred Hotel, where I encourage each and every one of you to experiment and find your own ultimate pairings. Cheers! Tim

Australian Heron mission ends in Afghanistan

BEST LINE OF

DEFENCE

[

]

While Australia’s Remotely Piloted Aircraft detachment in Afghanistan has flown its final Heron mission, returning to Australia by end of year, the RPA capability will continue, albeit scaled down to two aircraft.

Air Force will return a limited Heron capability to Australia to continue to develop knowledge in unmanned aerial system (UAS) technology, and to maintain a capability to support future Defence operations. This will also enable RAAF pilots maintain the skills to operate unmanned aerial systems until the introduction of the MQ4C Triton UAS. Australia will buy up to seven Tritons, to be based at RAAF Base Edinburgh in South Australia, with initial deliveries from 2017. Triton and the P-8A Poseidon manned aircraft (replacing the AP-3C Orion) will be the platforms for Australia’s long range maritime surveillance and intelligence gathering capability for decades to come. The Government will acquire eight P-8A aircraft, with an option for a further four aircraft. First deliveries are scheduled for 2017. In Afghanistan, the Herons provided high value intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support to Coalition forces. Intelligence

Gift

derived from high resolution imagery produced by Heron’s onboard sensors was a key factor in precision attacks on ISIS forces, especially in planning and executing complex missions requiring pin-point weapons delivery onto specific targets. In Australia, the Heron capability will be split, with 5 Flight based at RAAF Amberley and the two Herons operating from the the newly formed RAAF Base Woomera in South Australia. The portable Ground Control stations will be based at Woomera initially, but with the option to deploy to other locations for operations and training.

No 5 Flight facilities at Amberley will undergo rennovations, and Heron operations will be expanded over time from Woomera to other Defence and civilian airfields. In Afghanistan, the Herons were a valuable intelligence resource, and they proved the need for an unmanned, persistent (up to 24 hours), high altitude surveillance capability to augment that provided by manned aircraft such as the P-8A Poseidon. Heron Rotation 15 Commanding Officer, Wing Commander Phillip Parsons said Australian personnel had excelled over the past five years. “The Australian Heron capability forged a fine reputation among our American and other Coalition partners here in ISAF, as a result of our can-do attitude and the capabilities of this aircraft. “Sometimes we were the only RPA flying in this region and we’d often be called upon to get overhead and provide information back to Coalition partners.”Some 490 Air Force, Navy and Army personnel have deployed with the Heron detachment during its 15 rotations with three Herons based at Kandahar Airfield in southern Afghanistan.

Heron is Air Force’s first unmanned aerial system. Notably, it entered service directly into Afghanistan following training of RAAF and Army personnel in Canada in July 2009.

MONEY & PROPERTY

MATTERS Christmas Survival BY MARK BOURIS

The calendar has now flipped into December and that’s when Christmas becomes a reality. According to the Australian Retailers Association and creditcardfinder.com.au, Australian shoppers will spend around $45 billion between November 15 and December 24 this year, spending an average $488 each on Christmas presents. Here are a few tips on how to get through the season with your finances intact. Make a budget for the season; it has to cover presents, food and drink, but most importantly, it has to cover all your usual overheads: don’t miss mortgage, rent, finance and insurance payments because you overspent on gifts. Make a list for presents with a dollar limit. Once the list is finalised, stick to it. Communicate with other family members and negotiate cost limits on gifts. It doesn’t mean you’re cheap – everyone is relieved when someone suggests a limit. Don’t enter a shop without a list. Impulse buying and duplication will always blow your budget. Plan and budget your Christmas lunches and get-togethers. Once you buy a ham, a turkey and some wine, the costs are starting to mount. So coordinate your guests to bring

salads, desserts and bubbly. If you’re the one doing the visiting, plan in advance for gifts and a plate, and plan for a ride home or budget for the taxi fare. Do your shopping in cash – don’t use expensive credit cards (you’ll be thankful in January). Shop early – avoid the cost and poor selection of last-minute spending. Use your early start to shopping to pricecompare, research products and find bargains online. Buy small, meaningful gifts rather than simply expensive ones. You’ll save money and be remembered for the gift. Shop solo – Christmas shopping is business, not a social outing with friends. Don’t buy on store finance or special terms; they always cost you more. Organise your overseas gifts early and send them via regular mail. Those last-minute ‘express’ post fees cost more than the gifts. Check your frequent flyer and loyalty points: this is the time of year to use them instead of cash. As you move around the shops, keep an eye out for small gifts such as chocolates, wine, food platters etc. There’s always someone you left off your list and you’ll need a quick standby gift. The sheer financial pressure of the ChristmasNew Year period shouldn’t take away from your enjoyment of it. When you plan in advance and work within a budget. Make your Christmas fun – not financially stressful. Mr. Turner

In selected cinemas from Boxing Day Wirtten and directed by Mike Leigh, Mr. Turner explores the last quarter century of the great if eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies. Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty.

Replacing the annual People’s Choice Awards - which have recognised the nation’s best cars since 2003 - Mazda6 was awarded Best Family Car over $30,000, while Mazda CX-5 was recognised as the Best SUV under $50,000. Following the critical expert evaluation of each car, and also considering cost to run, retained value, consumer engagement and affordability, Mazda6 and CX-5 were stand-outs and voted best in their class. “Mazda has a product range the envy of many brands on sale Down Under - and the Mazda6 and CX-5 are both vehicles right at the very top of their game,” said motoring.com.au and carsales.com editor-in-chief, Mike Sinclair. “The carsales.com.au Car of the Year awards take into consideration key consumer and cost related factors - both areas where Mazda’s products have traditionally fared well. “The company’s latest cars are all among the best in their class.” With three of Mazda’s models, including AllNew Mazda3, Mazda6 and BT-50 winning best Family Car under $30,000 , best Family Car over $30,000 and best Tradie Vehicle respectively

in the recent motoring.com.au ‘recommends’ awards, the nation’s number one full-line importer has had an impressive awards season to date. “Winning two top awards in Carsales.com.au’s Car of the Year judging is greatly appreciated and means a lot to our engineers and product development teams here and in Japan,” said Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders. “Spirited, stylish, technically advanced cars that capture the imagination of the buyer are what Mazda is all about, and our buyers have embraced this ensuring Mazda nameplates are top of mind when it comes to purchase. “We think we offer buyers a pretty special product, so to get this recognition from a respected authority like Carsales.com.au whose judges know the industry, our product and our competition intimately – is satisfying.”

Llewellyn motors has always serviced Springfield, but is now proving it, with a new shop front at Orion Shopping Centre Llewellyn Motors business development manager Matthew Taylor-Farrington said the idea came about after the popular auto sales and service company identified a need for a bigger presence in the Springfield area. “We envisage to be there a lot longer, but initially we’ve set up a six month trial at Orion as a one-stop shop for car sales and service for all the brands we cover including Holden, Toyota, Hyundai and Subaru. “Sharni and Janelle are there every day where Springfield residents can enquire about new vehicles or servicing with no worries about distance. “Anyone interested in a test drive of a new vehicle can book it, and we will bring the car to your house, then meet you in the driveway,” Matthew said. Llewellyns service department has a courtesy bus to drop off customers which has been running to the area for over two years, but Llewellyns is hoping to take it to the next level. “We are in the process of setting up a shopfront where we can offer the service where you can leave your car in Springfield, our truck will pick it up and

people who get the train to work can come back to Springfield and their car will be there ready to drive home,” Matthew said. With full online capabilities, Springfield residents can log anything online. “Whether it’s an enquiry about a new vehicle, getting a test drive or a service query it is logged and chased up by our staff. “It’s proving very popular with people in Springfield, we just want people to know that they are being serviced by Llewellyns, as we are committed to the area, plus people can get everything they need including Hyundai, Toyota, Holden and Suburu sales and service,” Mr Taylor-Farrington said. Hydrogen-powered Hyundai ix35 arrives in Australia A Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell, a hydrogenpowered, zero-emissions Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) built in Ulsan, South Korea, has arrived in Australia. It is the first hydrogen-powered car to be permanently imported into the country. The vehicle is the first component of Hyundai’s plan to operate a test fleet of ix35 Fuel Cell vehicles in Australia. As such, it represents a pioneering step toward the commercial availability of emissions-free hydrogen powered vehicles in Australia. Hyundai has now begun the installation of Australia’s only Hydrogen Refuelling Station (HRS) at its headquarters in Macquarie Park, Sydney, using hydrogen provided by gas partner Coregas Australia. The HRS, supplied by American company Air Products, has passed all planning permissions from Ryde Council and is expected to be operational early in 2015.

In Europe and the United States, ‘Hydrogen Highways’ have been built by government and private partnerships for use by FCEV’s like the ix35 Fuel Cell, along with other hydrogen-powered vehicles such as buses. In some cases the refuelling stations generate their own hydrogen by using solar energy and electrolysers – this creates an entirely ‘green’ transport network, with neither the fuel

generation process nor the hydrogen vehicles themselves emitting any harmful by-products or burning fossil fuels. HMCA plans to build an electrolyser in partnership with Australian company Sefca at its headquarters in Macquarie Park in 2015, and install a solar array to power both it and the refueller – this will make its HRS fully selfsustainable, with hydrogen made on-site.
