University change a win for Ipswich It was a great day for higher education in Ipswich when the University of Southern Queensland formally took control of the University of Queensland Ipswich campus. The decision to transfer the Campus was motivated by a desire to increase tertiary education opportunities in the region and to reflect the strategic objectives of each university.

UQ will continue to have access to the Ipswich Campus during a two-year teach-out period in 2015 and 2016. This will enable most UQ students currently enrolled in Ipswichbased programs to complete their study with UQ at the Ipswich Campus.

USQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Jan Thomas said the opportunity to develop and offer a wide range of degree programs at Ipswich would complement USQ’s Springfield Campus and allow more students the chance to study for a university qualification.

“USQ has developed a strong presence in the western corridor of Brisbane and is looking forward to building on the community strengths and partnerships that UQ has already put in place,” Professor Thomas said.

“Since negotiations began to transition the Campus to USQ we have always been conscious of the need to offer courses and programs that met the needs of students and which offered graduates employment prospects in the region.

“USQ will continue to work alongside UQ students and staff over their teach-out periods and will continue to foster the level of service and community engagement activities that have been part of UQ’s existence in Ipswich.”

Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale was at the official handover and said that having a university in Ipswich reflects that this is smart city that is proud to have USQ teaching the next generation. “This is a wonderful significant day for our city to see the USQ flag flying over Ipswich,” he said. “Its more than a university, USQ has a great tradition of being part of the community. This is a wonderful education institution, and this is a significant moment for the city as we embark together on a new journey.” John Dargusch, Chancellor of USQ is hopeful that the changeover will inspire a whole new generation of people studying in Ipswich. “This now gives us a good footprint in the western corridor. It’s a win/win/win/win in my book. It’s a win for us, a win for UQ, a win for Ipswich and a win for the students in the area,” Mr Dargusch said. “Don’t be scared of a tertiary education, we have a great TPP program (Tertiary Preparation Program), which is very popular, but make the phone call and get your education under way. It’s never too late!” UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor

Peter Høj said USQ was well-positioned to strengthen access to higher education in the area.

“UQ will also maintain a presence on the Campus through UQ Health Care and the UQ Dietetics Clinic and we are pleased to continue our partnerships with health organisations in Ipswich.

“I’m delighted that UQ students and graduates representing a variety of health disciplines will continue to provide important health care services for the Ipswich community”. CITY VIBE Local specialists in dentures Dentures are a removable replacement for missing teeth, and it’s important to be able to get them made and serviced locally, because nobody likes long wait times. Limestone Dental Group has had an onsite dental laboratory servicing the needs of our patients for over 50 years, and we have a team of three dental technicians working exclusively for local customers. This means that we can provide prompt denture services. Our technicians can assist the dentist in the surgery with the patient present. This is something quite rare nowadays, as most dentists send their denture work off by courier to be completed by a dental technician offsite, and sometimes overseas which is not ideal to control quality and quick turn around. In the unfortunate situation where you need to have your dentures repaired, we can have a repaired denture back to you within hours. If you think you need dentures, or need a repair, feel free to contact Limestone Dental Group at any time for a consultation. Limestone Dental Group also has the facility to make on site mouthguards, splints, crowns, repairs, relines, teeth whitening trays, partial dentures and lots more, all made on site. Cricket to promote harmony Greater community harmony in Ipswich is being promoted through Queensland Government funding for a local community cricket tournament involving players from different and diverse cricket-loving cultural backgrounds from around the world. Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and Multicultural Affairs Glen Elmes said the success of last year’s inaugural tournament had convinced him to support the Super Kings tournament again this year. The Queensland Government has provided $10,000 for the T20-format tournament, which will involve players from across the state, and be a feature of this year’s Cultural Diversity Week from the end of August. “The Brisbane Super Kings Cricket Club, commenced a similar tournament four years ago, and has now begun to enjoy similar success in Ipswich,” Mr Elmes said. “The 2014 Ipswich tournament involved 69 matches, 24 teams and about 300 players from diverse cultural backgrounds, including Indian, Sri Lankan, Pakistani and Bangladeshi. “Queensland is one of the most culturally and linguistically diverse places in the world, and this tournament highlights that.” Local State Members, Sean Choat and

Ian Berry, said that with almost one fifth of residents born overseas, Ipswich was a great example of how a multicultural community can and does work. Member for Ipswich, Ian Berry, said the tournament would promote the local area and showcase the region’s rich cultural diversity. “The Queensland Government is committed to working in partnership with all culturally diverse communities, and to supporting the continued growth of strong multicultural communities across the state,” Mr Berry said. Member for Ipswich West, Sean Choat, said he was proud to support the sporting event which showcased the sporting abilities of Queenslanders from diverse cultural backgrounds right here in his backyard. “As a leading global sport, cricket captivates and inspires people of every age, gender, cultural background and ability while building bridges between continents, countries and communities,” Mr Choat said.

STAR CHAT

From F1 to ‘Paper Planes’

[

]

Steve Worland began his career as a copy boy at the Sydney Telegraph with a love for classic 1980’s action movies. Today, he is fast becoming one of Australia’s best-read action authors, with the release of his third book ‘Quick’.

On the big screen, an Aussie movie he wrote is getting rave reviews, as ‘Paper Planes’ hits cinemas across the country this week. His books are unashamedly written for ‘blokes’, and with ‘Quick’ being set in the world of Formula One, it’s a passion for fast cars and action that had Steve drawn to the genre like a moth to a flame. ‘Quick’ begins at a high-speed crash at Bathurst, and the pace never lets up from there. Former driver turned cop Billy Hotchkiss, is caught up in an string of international robberies connected with the F1 circuit, and pretty soon finds himself needing to save the world. “I’m a crazy Formula One fan,” Steve told Ipswich Life from his base in Sydney. “We all realise in Australia how good we’ve had it with F1 drivers, especially with Mark Webber and now Daniel Riccardo who is just so good. “You want to write about stuff you love, and I think there’s just something about it. There haven’t been too many novels set in the world of F1 that I know, and there’s a level to it that is so technical and complex, for someone who isn’t excited by it they’d think it’s insane. “In the last year the viewership has dropped off F1 because Vettel kept winning, and it got dull. So I wanted to take the essence of F1 and throw an action adventure story into that. The hard thing was to write it in a way that it wouldn’t turn off people who weren’t into motor racing, so they could just enjoy the story.” Steve is married to actress Georgie Parker, and has worked on several scripts over the years including TV shows Farscape along with the movies Lightstorm and Bootmen. But it’s his love of writing novels that he enjoys the most. “I’ve spent a lot of time in Hollywood trying to write action movies, as ultimately as an Aussie bloke in his mid-forties, the films that resonated with me as a young man were Aliens, Star Wars, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and so on. ‘When you go back and look at them, even though they are great films because they were the first of their kind, they really hit a nerve

with me, and guys of my generation. “Raiders was the benchmark. I’ve just finished a piece for a newspaper about what it is about Star Wars that touched a whole generation. What works for me in Star Wars was the humour and the characters. I got drawn into their adventure. How many movies have you seen that try that but don’t have the same heart? It totally changed my life because it stayed in my head. When I realised I wanted to write, I wanted to write stories just like that. “As a writer you’re always searching for that story that delivers such grand entertainment like those movies did. To have people read it and feel like they are being pulled along by a great story, that’s the reward as an author,” Steve said. “I’ve got Paper Planes out this month, and you’ve actually called when I’m working on the novelisation of it. A screenplay is say 15,000 words, and this is a book for young readers, so it’s got to be two or three times that length. My novels are around 100,000 words, and its so much more work. “A screenplay is a blueprint for someone else’s work of art, the director. It’s for them to interpret it on the screen. “As a writer, the focus for me has to be on the characters, the dialogue and the action. That’s what I was going for and hopefully I think it works when readers open up my books.” Steve was also recently in town for the SupaNova convention, the biggest event of all on the ‘Geek’ calendar last year. “I love doing the Sci-Fi conventions. When you have the likes of Matthew Reilly and George R .R.Martin turning up, its wonderful to be surrounded by people who are on the same page, and you meet so many young people who just get it. “They love the same things I do, and its so much fun.”

For example, you may think lenses are just lenses, right? “Did you know, finding the right lenses is as important as choosing the right frame, both critical to everyday comfort and satisfaction,” David said. “Today’s lenses come in a range of materials, with features such as being thinner and lighter in weight, so they are not as heavy on your nose.” Transitions are very popular…they are the lenses that change from light to dark in the sun which means you don’t have to take off your glasses and put on a pair of sunglasses. Polycarbonate lenses that are more impact resistant to protect your eyesight, be it for sport or work. At the Optical Superstore they pride themselves on matching the best lenses for your visual requirements. There’s a lot of choices when it comes to purchasing glasses and contact lenses these days, but if there’s one thing that money can’t buy, its experience. David Ward at the Optical Superstore in the Ipswich Mall, has over twenty seven years experience in the industry, including almost a decade managing an optical laboratory. The family-owned store has always been in the Ipswich mall since the day it opened, and is currently located next to Lowes in the heart of the Ipswich Mall.

STATE ELECTION 2015

ISSUES & POLICIES

Sean Choat aims to build a better Ipswich

[

]

Sean Choat’s campaign for re-election to the State Government seat of Ipswich West is focused on three main community issues: building infrastructure, improving law & order, and a better health system for the region. He also says paying down State debt is pivotal to the Queensland economic outlook.

“My biggest focus for Ipswich is in developing infrastructure, because I believe for too long Ipswich has been overlooked, so it’s been my highest priority,” Mr Choat said. “People would notice there’s been unprecedented roadworks around Ipswich, and while it’s been inconvenient at times the end result will be great. For example, the Blacksoil Interchange was talked about for a long time, so when I was elected I had to go to the Premier and Treasurer and say, ‘I don’t need $16 million, I need $40 million for the project. “Now that that project is finished I think we need to look at other areas down the Warrego Highway that need to be fixed. I think definitely Haigslea-Amberley Road and Minden crossroads need improvement, so I’ve met with Senator Barry O’Sullivan to see what can be done – as it’s a Federal Road. “I have more than 600 square kilometres in my electorate, so people often travel long distances. We see a lot of carnage on our roads so they need to be safer for the people who have to use them.”

Law and Order Mr Choat rates Law & Order as a something the general public expect its Members of Parliament to address as high priority. “I promised I would do something to ‘take back the streets’, and we’ve done very well. I have three police stations in my electorate – Rosewood, Marburg and Lowood – and they have been under-manned. We’ve needed more police in Lowood for a long time, and they look after that whole western district. When I was elected there were only ten police officers there, now there are sixteen because I’ve put pressure on for more and more. In Rosewood there were four, and now there are six. I also got the North Ipswich Police Beat reopened and the Riverlink Police Beat opened and established. “That’s important for people, to know that they’re not going to be harrassed when they go out, they will be safe. I’m convinced a safer community is a better community, and that’s what I’m about. “I also want to make sure police have 6 Ipswich Life

the latest in technology, with digital communications systems coming through, and equipment necessary for effective and

efficient law enforcement.”

Healthly Ipswich On Health, Mr Choat says the responsiveness of the health system and the availability of health care in the region has come along “in leaps and bounds.” “The good thing is that the savings we’ve made don’t go back into Consolidated Revenue any more, it stays here so hospitals can employ more medical staff and upgrade equipment. This means people in the region can be treated here, and that’s something I’m really conscious of, because people should be cared for in their own community not sent off to Brisbane. “I want to see more done in Cental Ipswich, and the West Moreton Health Board have been fantastic in that regard.”

‘Bikie Laws’ Mr Choat says that the current Vicious Lawless Association Disestablishment (VLAD) ‘Bikie Laws’ need to be retained. “You only have to look at the statistics: robbery is down 20 per cent and break & enter is down 27 per cent. Now, that didn’t happen by accident; those results are a direct consequence of those laws being brought in, and enforced. “All the hype that innocent people are being victimised is just not the case. To be picked up under one of those laws you have to be a member of one of those criminal gangs. It’s got nothing to do with motorcycle riding and tattoos, this is about people who are serious gang members who are involved in crime and millions and millions of dollars in drugs destined for our streets and our community – young people mostly. “Organised crime is always going to be there

but the VLAD laws have done a lot to get rid of it, but we need to keep going on it. I can’t understand why anyone would want to go soft on crime.” Mr Choat said that he “wants to build stuff that creates jobs” and that the new Wukuraka Industrial Estate is a good example. “Project such as Wulkuraka have great potential for more jobs for Ipswich people. It’s going to be a state of the art facility that can generate 1500 jobs from surrounding industries plus 500 jobs in the construction phase. That’s 2000 jobs in an electorate of 33,000 people. “With the prospect of the Redbank railway workshops closing down I want to see that work come out here, with a company such as Bradken taking up the work and creating more jobs. “Tourism and recreation needs a boost as well. Ipswich Tourism do a great job with what they’ve got but we need more facilities and opportunities here. Now, there’s been talk of a dam for recreation at Willowbank; why couldnt we turn that into a water sports precinct, with boating, skiiing and all those things there, and it’s in great proximity to the Cunningham Highway, so people can get there easily. So, I think we need to think big in those types of projects. “We’ve got great potential here, with so much land for industrial and residential projects, so I think we are in for a great future.”

Paying Down State Debt On the ‘Strong Choices’ program, to lease some state-owned assets, Mr Choat said that he is on the record as being against any form of asset sales. “I lived through the QR thing, I was in QR, it was the wrong decision to sell because the didn’t focus on what they were going to do with the money, they just kept borrowing more. “But with leasing, the Government will get the cash it needs, and the Premier will only accept top dollar for those leases. The good thing about it is the community gets the money but will still

own the asset, and down the track our kids and grandkids will have options with those valuable state assets. “The other good thing is that under what’s termed asset recycling some $25 billion from leasing revenue will be used to pay down the State’s debt. Currently, the interest payments on the $80 billion debt we inherited is about $470,000 per hour. “A further $3.3 billion will be placed in a fund to pay for all the solar systems we have here in Queensland, and the remaining money will be used to build new assets for the State, such as dams, bridges, hospitals, schools, and other infrastructure projects. “I don’t think people fully realise where the money comes from, that is, the debt. It doesn’t come from some world bank, it comes from countries such as China and the Middle East. We owe them $80 billion, and I don’t feel very comfortable with that. “I think 2015 will be a great year for us, and I want to be part of a government that takes Queensland back to the days when we were the envy of Australia.”

Strong economy... strong State future

[

]

Ian Berry has held the traditional Labor State Government seat of Ipswich for the past three years, and knows he has a battle on his hands to win another term. He is nevertheless resolute in his role as a Member of the Queensland Parliament to help get the best deal for Ipswich.

Mr Berry says that the strength of the Queensland economy is key to a better standard of living for his electorate and indeed the whole of the State. “Anyone with a budget – business, family or government – knows that you need to get the revenue in, watch your expenses, and at least balance the books, so that you don’t have an unaffordable debt,” Mr Berry said. “The situation we have at present in Queensland is that we have spent more than we have earned, and we’ve had to borrow billions of dollars to balance the books – and that money has to be repaid. That’s what we are about: paying down debt so that the interest payments can be spent on things that benefit all Queenslanders.”

Policy Driven Action “As a government we’ve done some really good things, we’ve got 46 extra police officers in Ipswich and we are getting more. Ipswich was first, when Lawrence Springborg came here he said ‘yes, this is where we will start to build up law enforcement in Queensland’. “We also got $21 million into Education to transition Grades 6 and 7 into High School, as well as maintaining our schools, so the Government is looking after Ipswich.” Mr Berry said that the biggest difference between the LNP and the Opposition was, “we’ve got a plan for Queensland’s future.” “Twelve months out from this election we

“The alternative is for Government to buy people a job, but then you have to borrow to pay for it, and then pay interest on that debt – or raise taxes – b th options are not what the LNP is about.

have 76 policies in train, which shows our commitment to planning and doing something to make this State great.

Jobs Growth “It’s all about jobs, and jobs depend on a strong economy, so that’s our focus, not training people for unemployment but creating a prosperous economy that enables more people to be employed, and that translates into truly sustainable jobs growth. “Things are going well for us, with the dollar coming down, which is good for our exporters, such as JBS our biggest exporter employing 2000 people in Ipswich, and the lower dollar makes them more competitive. The Government has helped out our exporters such as JBS, with things like access to bulk water and other things, but the payoff is in terms of jobs for Ipswich people – guaranteeing that their workforce will be employed.

“The majority, the Middle Australia, they balance their budgets, they are all very busy and make the hard decisions in their lives. They say to me ‘you, the government, get on and do what you have to do. We expect you to manage our economy, and we expect you to do it well’.”

Issues That Count Mr Berry says that three issues resonate with Queenslands. “Our survey, which attracted about 3000 responses, indicated the major issues are Law & Order, Health and Cost of Living. “On Law & Order, people like the idea of not being intimidated by criminals, and feeling safe in their homes and where they live and work, he said. “Just imagine the previous policing situation: the city is 46 police officers down, and as a constable you are out on night duty without backup – having to call on Brisbane for help if something really bad happens. We are providing the safety net we are providing police officers, with increased manning levels.”

Strong Choices Mr Berry sees no alternative to the Strong Choices program, to increase revenue levels to pay off State debt and invest in worthwhile infrastructure projects. The Premier has said that leasing of State assets will not be undervalued, as was the case when Queensland Railways was sold to Horizon. “It was a fire sale because they needed the cash to run the economy; they took a low price and then didn’t use the money to develop infrastructure. “Labor lost the last election because they were ‘selling the farm’ and people won’t cop that,” Mr Berry said. “Our economy runs on efficiencies, and there’s a mentality we need to change. It seems that when Government runs things, such as electricity generation, they do it inefficiently. If you look at the data, the places where it’s privatised electricity is actually cheaper. If you run an efficient electrical industy, as Victoria does, then it’s cheaper. Their prices have come down by 17 per cent while ours have risen by 147 per cent over the past six years or so.”

Business Focus

Housing for people who can least afford it is another area claimed as a success. “As a government, we built houses and leased them to church and community organisations. They manage the system and it’s cheaper because they are committed to the less fortunate in our community, their structures are better and they run things as a business.” “Why is the hospital running so well? It’s because the Board is made up of business people, not government. These people know how to run businesses efficiently. That’s what works: government allowing instrumentalities, etc to be managed independently on a business basis. “And that’s the problem with Labor, they were just spending, there was no one saying ‘what’s the business model, what are we trying to achieve’ and then put in practice efficiencies that work.

Queensland an Export State Mr Berry says that Queensland is an export state. “With only 22 million people we are tiny by world standards. In Queensland we have only 2.6 million people working full time in Queensland who have to pay off $80 billion in debt, and that’s going to take a long time. “Economists say that the debt is manageable but we need to make tough decisions now and in the coming years to pay down that debt. That’s what the Queensland public elected us to do and that’s why I want to continue with the task given to the LNP.” “The majority, the Middle Australia, they balance their budgets, they are all very busy and make the hard decisions in their lives. They are saying to me ‘you, the government, get on and do what you have to do. We expect you to manage our economy, and we expect you to do it well’.”

STATE ELECTION 2015

ISSUES & POLICIES

Roads the focus for Ipswich West candidate

[

]

Candidate for Ipswich West Jim Madden has plans to obtain funding for several black spots across the region, if he is elected into office at the January 31 election.

Standing as the Labor candidate, Jim runs a legal practice in Lowood and was elected as a councillor to the Somerset Regional Council in 2012. A former student of St. Mary’s primary and St. Edmunds College, Jim knows Ipswich well, having lived in the area all his life and has been involved in several community groups over the years as a lawyer and councillor. “My passion is to support community groups. That includes groups such as P&Cs, P&Fs, service clubs, farmer groups, the RSL, sports clubs, men’s sheds, show societies, Scouts and Guides. I share the same heart with the good people who give their time generously and freely to keep these groups going.” Jim’s priorities should he win office include getting traffic lights on the corner of Downs Street and Delacy Street, after changes were made to the direction of traffic coming from Tivoli. “I’ll fight to get lights on the corner of Downs Street and Delacy Street. I’ve spoken with the owners of businesses around there due to the changes on that intersection, and business has dropped dramatically. Even the pie shop at the intersection has closed. “The previous member Wayne Wendt had got approval to spend $2.9 million on that intersection but the LNP government cancelled it,” Mr Madden said.

“I was very happy as a councillor but I was very disappointed with Campbell Newman’s government, especially with the state of the Brisbane Valley highway. It’s terrible. I fought as hard as I could to get this fixed, and was told it would be fixed but after the election. “My other priority is a better crossing at Colleges Crossing. My engineers from the council have told me it just needs to be raised two metres to allow the water to flow under it. I’d also like to see the Norman Street bridge get built, from Jacaranda Street in East Ipswich over the river, which will ease the pressure on the David Trumpy bridge in town. “Plus I’ll be fighting to retain government services in Ipswich West, better roads, schools and jobs. Currently 1 in 5 young people in Ipswich West can’t get a job and 1 in 10 adults are unemployed. We need funding to train apprentices, grants to employees which are tied to increasing local employment. “If Labor can get into power, I’d love to see the buildings that are being leased actually be full of people. It’s crazy that hundreds of Ipswich people travel to Brisbane to work. I think the ball was dropped in moving those people to Ipswich. Since the LNP came in they’ve spent $5.5 million on rent for space that isn’t being used,” Mr Madden said. Howard wants the focus on Ipswich jobs

[

Jennifer Howard has been campaigning for the Ipswich seat since mid last year, and in that time has been talking to locals about what they think the issues are in Ipswich.

“People are very disillusioned,” Ms Howard said. “A couple of people I’ve spoken to me have told me they were sacked by Campbell Newman in 2012 and were looking forward to the 31st of January when they could return the favour,” Ms Howard said. “My goal is to get those employment programs back that were axed, and get jobs going in Ipswich. “Jobs have to be a focus. Analysis has shown that for every one dollar of government spending invested in the Skilling Queenslanders program, eight dollars was returned to the economy. So it’s false to say that that program had to be cut for economic reasons. “Labor created opportunities for Ipswich people when in Government and those opportunities have been squandered under Campbell Newman. We need to take the steps to get Ipswich back on track.” Ms Howard has been a local for many years. Her children went to school in Ipswich and she has run a small business in Ipswich, and has lived in the inner city for several years and was relieved when the election was called a few weeks ago. “After running a small business, and being a parent, I’ve experienced first hand what people are talking about, and I understand the struggles they have. “I was glad when the election was called

]

because I’ve been ready and waiting since April last year, but it was a bit cynical to call it while a lot of people are focused on coming home from holidays and back to school expenses. It just shows how out of touch this LNP government is with Queensland families. “I’ve been doorknocking and talking to people about issues important to them, and I’ve found that people are concerned about the CBD and the need for revitalisation, especially about all the public servants that were promised to fill the icon building. “There is a coffee shop locally that renewed its lease just a few days before the government announced it was moving all the workers out of the George Thorn building. By having buildings like the George Thorn building sitting empty, the LNP has squandered a great opportunity for this business and for the Ipswich community. “I have a battle ahead. People say that Ipswich is Labor heartland but the demographic changes. Ipswich was the launching ground for Pauline Hanson and she’s still around. As Ipswich continues to change and grow, I won’t be taking anything for granted during this campaign. Ipswich people will see me out and about working hard to earn their support and their trust.”

Business owners, patrons to benefit from ‘Safe Night Out’

Motorsport collection opens in City Square Ipswich is famous across the country as being a car loving town. From the V8 Supercars, to the Winter and Summer Nats, to memories of being a teenager doing ‘laps’ in the CBD on a Friday night…we love our motorsport. So it’s fitting that a unique Motorsport collection has now been opened to the public in Ipswich City Square, in the old ‘Struddies’ sport store location in the heart of the Ipswich Mall. Ian Bone has spent many years collecting cars, memorabilia, artworks, photos and clothing, and for a small entry cost now has a wonderful collection on display for the public. Among the collection is a car deemed priceless. A vehicle being specially made for Peter Brock’s attempt at the Dakar Rally, which tragically never happened due to the legend’s passing. But the vehicle, now truly priceless, and costing over $1m to develop, is on display here in Ipswich. “We want to create a destination for Ipswich, and being a motor mecca, having such a relationship through Willowbank Raceway, this is the right place to show the collection,” said owner Ian Bone. “This was always a dream of mine, and the council has been very supportive of the whole project. “A previous display like this at the Ipswich Art Gallery had 23,000 people visit, which gave me the confidence that Ipswich would love this

collection. “We have replica vehicles, along with Holden precision driving team cars….all from private collections and some of them are literally priceless. Ipswich is such an historic place, with a strong motoring heritage. Coming here and opening this place means that in some way I can leave a legacy. Ipswich has the Art Gallery, and the Railway Workshops which both go gangbusters, so this is, in my mind complimentary in making Ipswich a tourist destination that Ipswich can be very proud.” Ian loves the collection of cars on display, and some are there simply because of how rare they are, and they aren’t all former racing cars. “Most of the attention from visitors is given to the special car built for Peter Brock for Dakar, which is on display in Ipswich for the first time. “The vehicle for the Dakar Rally has never been displayed here before. The Dakar vehicle is the only one in existence. They invested over $1million to develop it. That car is built like a V8 supercar, and is the highlight of the exhibition for most people. It’s a fascinating vehicle. “It’s based on a Holden Adventura with left hand drive. People ask me what it’s worth and I say ‘priceless’,” Ian said. The display centre is now open, 10am to 4pm daily in the Ipswich Mall. It is open both Saturday and Sunday, giving a great reason to reacquaint yourself with the Ipswich Mall.

Several local businesses have met Attorney General Jarrod Bleijie to discuss the ‘Safe Night Out’ initiative, designed to rid the Ipswich CBD of troublemakers. Since the initiative began last October, 14 people have been banned from licensed venues in Ipswich. Under proposed new legislation, people who enter licenced venues after 10pm will have a scan taken of their identification, so that if they are ejected from one venue in the precinct, they are not able to visit another. The precinct runs from the One Mile Pub to the Ulster Hotel. “The safe night out precinct was based on a lot of research on trying to get young people to be responsible,” said local MP Ian Berry. “$47 million has been spent to educate kids in schools about drugs and alcohol. “The best part of this is that it is locally driven, and from my own personal experience I know a fellow who was assaulted in the Top of Town. It was unprovoked, picked up by cameras and someone is in jail because of it. We need to get the message out there that we don’t want this in our society.” Changes to legislation in NSW regarding ‘King Hits’ has shown societies attitude

towards drunken violence, and there are calls to have the same laws in Queensland. “I think our legislation is better than New South Wales,” Mr Bleijie said. “Only genuine accidents are a defence now. It’s a punishment in between murder and manslaughter and has been carefully drafted so that the courts can use it, and make it work. “Part of this strategy is to make scanning of ID’s compulsory. This is so police can see who is banned from an area, and they are all connected. “We don’t want to punish the majority for the sins of the few. People should be able to go out in a safe way. So let’s change the culture, and educate. “Every child in year 7-12 this year will receive compulsory alcohol and drug training. It used to be done in year 12, and that’s too late. It’s no good doing it just before schoolies. We need to change the behaviour, and licencees want to do the right thing, nobody wants trouble in their venue,” he added. “A safe night out is a great night out.” Photo: Earl Muir from Metro Hotel, Richard Shaw from One Mile Hotel, Ian Berry MP, Attorney General Jarrod Bleijie and Hogs Breath General Manager Natalie Wilson.

Chamber members elect new Board The Ipswich Chamber of Commerce & Indsutry has welcomed a new Board members for 2015, and is set to launch the all-new ‘Shop Ipswich’ campaign, which will be a great marketing tool for local businesses, along with online shopping for local customers. Chamber President Anita Dwyer said that there is currently an added incentive to join other Ipswich businesses with memberships from just $99, which will allow them to join in the launch of ‘Shop Ipswich’ early next year. “We are launching the site to members with a series of videos that will be distributed via social media and the Chamber’s own networks in coming months, encouraging members to sign up and other businesses to

join the Chamber, adding to our strength as a voice in the Ipswich region” Ms Dwyer said. The videos are already on the Shop Ipswich Facebook page, and on the official ShopIpswich.com.au website. “We encourage you to sign up to ensure that the site delivers a wide variety of products and services for consumers, ensuring strong representation for Ipswich businesses via this unique online platform,” Ms Dwyer added. The site will offer Virtual Shopfronts, along with Trades & Professional Services listings. Senior high school students confident of their career goals are encouraged by TAFE Queensland South West’s VET In-School’s Manager Sorita McGrane to consider starting a school-based apprenticeship or traineeship this year, to realise their dream job.

School-based apprenticeships and traineeships commence in year 11 and 12; training can count towards the student’s OP score, and students getting a head-start on their careers while earning and learning, are just a few of the many advantages of starting a trade qualification at high school.

“TAFE Queensland South West offers more than 100 school-based apprenticeships and traineeships, varying from hairdressing and beauty to early childhood, right through to automotive so if you’re considering a trade – our highly-experienced, well-connected teachers, will get you on your way,” Ms McGrane said. “Just last year we saw a significant number of Ipswich students graduate from TAFE Queensland South West VET in Schools programs, including 23 school-based apprentices and trainees – so there is a definite trend for students who know want they want from their career, opting to ‘earn while learning’, so they can hit the job ground running.” TAFE Queensland South West in Bundamba works with a number of different schools in Ipswich and its surrounds to facilitate schoolbased apprenticeships and traineeships. Sportsco - understanding kids’ feet Children’s feet are highly vulnerable to injury as they continue development into their late teenage years, so it is important to be able to recognise a few more common lower limb aches and pains that can affect your child. Flat Feet Flexible flatfoot or a pronated foot is a condition usually caused by loose ligaments within the feet. Flat feet can cause aching feet or legs, especially during and/or after exercise. Other problems that can arise include poor balance’ poor coordination, tripping over’, bunions, heel and knee pain. Treatment with foot orthotics may be indicated if symptoms are occurring or if the flat foot is severe. Heel Pain/Severs Disease Severs disease is an injury to the growth plate of the heel bone where the Achilles tendon attaches, commonly affecting active children 10 to 14 years of age. What to look for? Your child may experience pain at the back of the heel bone. This is worse with exercise. Initially, it is best to reduce sports/activity & ice the painful area. Also check the fit of your child’s footwear. If pain persists, it is recommended to seek opinion with a Podiatrist. Knee Pain/Osgood Schlatters Osgood-Schlatters causes pain, tenderness and swelling just below the knee, and down the shin (tibia). It is more common in boys, overweight children and from overzealous activities such as running and jumping. The condition will usually present with tenderness and swelling below the knee.

Frequent Ankle Sprains An ankle sprain occurs when there is a sudden twisting motion at the ankle during weight loading. This can overstretch or even break the ligaments resulting in pain, swelling, bruising and the inability to weight bear. If your child sprains or twists their ankle frequently, a Podiatrist is able to manage this through exercises and the use of orthoses. Growing Pains Growing pains are harmless muscle pain which can affect children from 3 years of age right through to adolescence. They often occur of an evening and affect either the calf muscles, thigh muscles or behind the knee. There are numerous causes including muscle tiredness and poor postural control. Growing pains can be infrequent and can be brought on by increased activity during the day. The pain is always gone by the morning. Growing pains do not affect the way a child walks or runs although lower limb biomechanics can be an attributing factor to the problem. For the best fitting shoes and runners, drop into Sportsco,

The festival was first held in Thredbo’s Snowy Mountains in 2008. Following extensive attendance growth, the event moved to NSW’s Hunter Valley in 2011. Once again, the festival has grown in scope and popularity and promoters have decided to move to the expandable QLD site. 91 years of tradition and history! Gailes Golf Club is 91 years old this year and the club and course are still growing, setting the tradition of the game and its members as the number one priority …always. The Gailes Golf Club commenced its life back in the year 1924 when the local Doctor in the area and the Head of the now Wolston Park Hospital decided to build a Golf Course and beautify the area which was just waste land at the time. 91 years on the Golf Course has stood the test of time with some of the toughest 18 holes off the Black Markers anywhere in the area. The ‘pretty as a picture’ Golf Course with its natural wildlife around the course is certainly a wonderful addition to the Brisbane/Ipswich area. Growing with the Gailes Golf Club has been the loyalty and long standing members some who have been with the club for 78 years and many more that are in the 50 year plus club. One of these members started at Gailes Golf Club when he was a 14 year old boy and use to caddy for the older members, his name is Harry Horstmann he has been with the club for 78 years and still plays every Wednesday and slips in a Saturday when not travelling. Another member like Harry, Ted Bousen who is the same age as Harry 95 going on 96 years still play at every opportunity, Ted is

Ipswich City Vibe

OUT AND ABOUT IN

Ipswich city is ideally positioned on the national road network just 40 minutes from Brisbane. There are a great number of attractions to enjoy. Here are just a few.

BLAIR

Heritage Buildings

Ipswich is a city rich in history. In the 1850s, Ipswich aspired to become the capital of Queensland. Although it lost this honour to Brisbane, it was a prosperous and confident city and this is reflected in its buildings which include imposing public offices, several of the oldest churches in Queensland, legendary pubs, numerous fine mansions and a large number of historic houses and cottages.

WITH SHAYNE NEUMANN, MP

Australia Day Jan 26

th

Australia Day is an occasion to reflect on what it means to be an Australian and the privileges, opportunities and responsibilities we enjoy in our wonderful country. In our vibrant democracy, Australia Day can and does mean different things to different people. Many will take advantage of the longweekend to spend time with family or take a trip to the bush or the beach. Some will receive Australia Day awards in recognition of their achievements in their work, their art, their sport or their community. Australia Day is also the most popular day to become an Australian Citizen. Last year about 18,000 people affirmed their solemn commitment to their new country on January 26. This year, some 141 people of every age, race and creed will be welcomed at local citizenship ceremonies in Ipswich and the Somerset. On that day, families from every corner of the world will join our great Australian family. Each year, I look forward to attending the Rosewood ceremony so ably managed by the Rosewood Lions. Ten people will receive the great honour of Australian Citizenship in the Rosewood State School BER hall this year. Appropriately, these newest Australians will then celebrate with tea, damper and lamingtons. Terrible events at home and abroad can make it seem that the world is driven by hate. However, genuine gatherings of welcoming such as the Australia Day Citizenship ceremonies in Ipswich and the Somerset remind us that far more unites us than divides us.

Warm Regards, Shayne

Air Task Group to return home from Middle East Australia’s first detachent of 400 Defence personnel – supporting air operations by six F/A-18F Super Hornets, a KC-30A tankertransport and an E-7A Wedgetail AEW&C aircraft – are set to return home following a successful four-month deployment to Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates. The Super Hornets’ first combat mission against Islamic forces in early October introduced a program of air strikes that destroyed many ISIL targets, contributing significantly to the coalition air campaign aimed at stopping the advance of IS forces

across Iraq. The Super Hornet rate of effort has been high, averaging more than 70 combat sorties per month over the past three months, while the KC-30A provided air refuelling support to coalition aircraft, and E-7A aircraft provided airspace management. December produced the highest rate of effort with the Super Hornets delivering more than 60 GPS-guided and laser-guided weapons against ISIL targets. That month, the KC-30A offloaded more than three million pounds of fuel to Coalition aircraft. The planned rotation of the Australian Air

Task Group personnel is expected in the coming weeks. Replacement aircrews and support personnel for Super Hornet and KC-30A operations will come from home base at No 1 Squadron and No 33 Squadron at RAAF Base Amberley. The E-7A Wedgetail is operated by No 2 Squadron based at RAAF Base Williamtown near Newcastle, NSW. Other support personnel from Amberley and other bases will also make up the new ATG rotation. Chief of Defence Force, Air Chief Marshal Mark Binskin is impressed with the achievements of the ATG so far. “You are

handing over the air component in good shape for continued air strike, command-andcontrol and air-to-air refuelling operations into 2015,” he said. “I believe our ATG is the best-equipped, best-trained and most-prepared air contingent Australia has ever sent on operations and the tireless efforts and professionalism of our people is reflected in the results.” Command of the Air Task Group has transferred from Air Commodore Steve Roberton to Air Commodore Glenn Braz, who is well known to RAAF Amberley and Ipswich.

Seven years later, the new strike force of Super Hornets, supported by new generation air refuelling and AEW&C aircraft are flying combat missions in a foreign land – again demonstrating the need for Australia to continue to evolve its force in being regardless of the perceived threat of the moment. New Defence Minister commits to Defence spending Kevin Andrews, sworn in as the Minister for Defence in December 2014, says the Coalition Government is committed to increasing its investment in Australian Defence infrastructure. “Under the Coalition more than $1 billion worth of defence work is continuing in South Australia alone, including 44 separate acquisition projects such as the Air Warfare Destroyer programme, the support and upgrade of the RAAF’s P3 Orion aircraft fleet, and upgrades to ANZAC Class Frigates and the Army’s communications systems,” Mr Andrews said. “This is addition to $34 million on the Future Submarine program – building our competencies and knowledge base in cooperation with industry. “Over the next four years – subject to the outcomes of the Defence white paper – there will be up to $4.2 billion in defence spending for building and sustaining defence materiel. “Australia will acquire eight P8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft and we have committed to the acquisition of the

Triton Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV). Mr Andrews accompanied the Prime Minister on a recent visit to Al Minhad Air Base in the United Arab Emirates . “Meeting the personnel of our Special Operations Task Group in Baghdad was a privilege,” he said. “I was impressed with the depth of experience within the Task Group and their commitment to assisting the Iraqi CounterTerrorism Service as it takes the fight to ISIL.” “I am determined to work hard in the interests of all Australians to make our country safer and more secure. Talking Beer WITH ANTHONY AT THE YAMANTO TAVERN

Beer enthusiasts have an intensely emotional relationship to hops. We can talk all day about the differences among varieties: the mildness of the Saaz, the bright tang of the exotic Sorachi Ace. I love everything about hops — everything, that is, except for the way that a lot of people conflate hops’ bitter aftertaste with the taste of craft beer itself. From a consumer’s standpoint, though, beers overloaded with hops are a pointless gimmick. That’s because we can’t even taste hops’ nuances above a certain point. Hoppiness is measured in IBUs (International Bitterness Units). Most beer judges agree that even with an experienced palate, most human beings can’t detect any differences above 60 IBUs. Some of today’s India Pale Ales, like Holgate Brewhouse Millennium Falcon, measure around 100 IBUs. Craft brewers’ obsession with hops has overshadowed so many other wonderful aspects of beer. Let’s be clear: Not all craft beer is hoppy. There are many craft breweries that seek to create balanced, drinkable beers that aren’t very bitter at all. Australia’s craft breweries make beers to suit every palate, not just the ones that revel in bitterness. So here’s my plea to my fellow craft beer enthusiasts: Give it a rest. Let’s talk about the differences between wild and cultivated lab yeast. Let’s geek out about local, craft26 Ipswich Life

malted barley and how it compares to traditional imported European malts. And let’s start preaching a new word: Craft beer isn’t always bitter. Who knows? Maybe we’ll finally win over some of those VB fans. If you want to try a few hoppy and not so hoppy beers, head down to Char’d Steakhouse at the Prince Alfred Hotel, Booval, where their craft beer range is always expanding. Cheers, Tim

THAT’S

SHOWBIZ WITH 97.3 FM’s LOUISE Welcome to 2015! * A new year, a new awards season underway kicking off with the Golden Globes — the Californian celebration of the big and small screens. The big winner of the even was the movie Boyhood (which was filmed over 12 years). Boyhood picked up Best Drama Motion Picture; Best Director — Richard Linklater; And Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture — Patricia Arquette. Movie: The Theory of Everything was the second biggest winner on the night picking up Best Actor — Eddie Redmayne and Best Original Score. Kevin Spacey picked up Best Actor in a tv series for his work in House of Cards and television show The Affair won Best Tv Series (Drama) and Best Actress (Drama) for Ruth Wilson.

* Nominations for the BAFTA’s were announced earlier this month and it looks like a similar story to the Golden Globes. The nominees for Best Film are: Birdman, Boyhood, The Grand Budapest Hotel, The Imitation Game, The Theory of Everything. Best Leading Actor: Benedict Cumberbatch — The Imitation Game; Eddie Redmayne — The Theory of Everything; Jake Gyllenhaal – Nightcrawler; Michael Keaton — Birdman; Ralph Fiennes — The Grand Budapest Hotel. And Best Leading Actress: Amy Adams — Big Eyes; Felicity Jones — The Theory of Everything; Julianne Moore — Still Alice; Reese Witherspoon — Wild; Rosamund Pike — Gone Girl. The BAFTAs are held February 8.

Benedict Cumberbatch

* Being the half-time entertainment for the Superbowl in the US is sort of a big deal. And following the epic performances of Bruno Mars in 2014 and Beyonce in 2013 will be no easy feat – But Katy Perry, who recently toured 20+ Australian dates late last year has the honours and now she’d picked her special guest (you’re allowed one): Lenny Kravitz. Here’s hoping for a rock-your-socks-off version of I Kissed A Girl. The show takes place Feb 1st.

* Original American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson will be back with new music this year. After recently getting married and giving birth to a baby girl, Kelly has gone back into the studio to record her 7th album. It’s called Piece by Piece and will be released in March. * Super screen writing duo Phil Lord and Chris Miller (Lego Movie, 22 Jump Street) initially said ‘no’ to writing the Lego Movie sequel — but have now jumped on board confirming it is one of their upcoming projects for 2015. They are also working on a Lego Batman movie and a film adaptation of Lego Ninjago. What will happen in the Lego Movie sequel? Miller said in an interview: ”Well I don’t want to give you spoilers but we were really interested in what happens to that boy who’s in the meta story in the first movie when he’s four years older. When he’s an adolescent how does that change his point of view? And it’s nice to have the characters start in a different place from the first movie. Emmet, for example, was in an existential crisis of having seen another dimension and was questioning the whole point of his existence.” * Oh to be Dr Dre. He was named the highest paid person in music in 2014 after earning the equivalent of $19.66 for every second of every minute of every hour of every day of last year. That’s $620,000,000 in 2014 alone. His big windfall came after the sale of his company (behind the Dr Dre Beats Headphones) to Apple last year. Beyonce was the second highest paid person in music earning $3.65 per second or $115,000,000 for the year. * And in 1982 Sylvester Stalone spilled his ‘first blood’ as Rambo — now over 30 years later he plans on spilling more. A fifth instalment to the Rambo series was announced by Sly earlier this month. It’s title: Last Blood. Till next time… Louise

MONEY & PROPERTY

MATTERS The China Syndrome BY MARK BOURIS

New Year, New Start: Plan for Success in 2015 The New Year is a time for resolutions and reflection concerning your personal finances. Did you set goals last year? If so, did you achieve them? It’s that time of year where you need to take stock, conduct a financial health check and look at ways to improve them in the year ahead. Making a goal and having a plan is a great way to not only achieve some goals but control your cash flow. And making a plan for a year gives you a chance to set goals and divide their execution into monthly and weekly benchmarks. Here’s some ideas: Goals: write down what you want to achieve. Make different columns for your goals: you can have basic ones such as ‘eliminate credit cards’ and bigger dreams such as ‘buy a house’. Write them down, be realistic and if you have a partner, make sure both of you agree on them. Plan: a year gives you plenty of time to plan to reach your goals. For each goal, break its achievement into weekly, monthly and quarterly steps. Many small steps add up to big goals. Discipline: have a good look at the plan. If it’s worth pursuing, it’s worth committing to. Decide early.

B E AT YO U R BANK

Weed out: throw out the goals you won’t follow through on and don’t sabotage yourself from the outset – if you know you won’t go to the gym every day, change it to something you will do. Consumer debt: achieving most financial goals involves saving of some sort, but it also involves debt reduction. Find a way to rid yourself of the most expensive debt (credit cards). Make a plan for this. Efficient debt: you can save a lot of money by fine-tuning your mortgage: on a $300,000 25-year mortgage at 4.65 per cent your total interest bill is $207,941. But if you pay 5.21 per cent, your total interest is $237,198. The difference over the long term, is almost $30,000, all other things being equal. Review your insurance needs: as you move through your career and life, your insurance needs will change. Give some thoughts to how your family has grown, if your job has changed, have you acquired any additional assets — and if so compare what level of cover you need to what you already have. Advice: acknowledge you can’t know everything, and take expert advice early — not just when you’re in trouble. Final tip: you know there’s going to be a holiday period at the end of every year. The New Year is a great opportunity to get an early start to your savings. Now is the time to open a Christmas saver account, keep it separate from your daily transactions and save a small amount of income each week so you have a cash fund. Hyundai has revealed the innovative Santa Cruz Pickup Concept at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit. This fresh concept reflects a new interpretation of pickup utility for a new generation of buyers, especially Millennials, who represent the second-largest population of car buyers. “The Santa Cruz Pickup concept meets the unspoken needs of a growing Millennial lifestyle we call ‘Urban Adventurers’,” said Mark Dipko, director, corporate planning, Hyundai Motor America. “This new crossover allows them all the expandable utility they need throughout their active week, from work-life professionalism, to social interests, to a whole variety of outdoor pursuits, without the typical compromises they have come to expect from the industry’s current product offerings.”

To meet the specific needs of these Urban Adventurers, Santa Cruz doesn’t focus on all the same attributes as traditional pickups. It’s designed to meet more of their desires for expression, efficiency and manoeuvrability. Hyundai designers created a bold design that conveys this lifestyle, with a wide, sure-footed stance and an aggressive side-profile rake. The front view features an upright, hexagonal grille with cascading lines framing the sides, dual lens-free, honeycombed headlamp projectors, and prominent LED fog lamps. Efficiency is a key attribute of its advanced powertrains, with an environmentally-friendly 2.0-litre turbo diesel powertrain delivering 142kW and 407Nm of torque. The Santa Cruz remains at this stage a pure concept only.
