As a kid, Justine Ford would run around her neighbourhood with a magnifying glass. Inspired by her collection of ‘Junior Detective’ books Justine Ford never imagined that one day she would get to play the role for real. Justine has appeared on several TV shows such as ‘Australia’s Most Wanted’ and ‘Missing Persons Australia’, plus has written several books about the darker side of our society. Her new book, ‘Unsolved Australia’ takes a look at 18 of the nation’s most puzzling, sometimes horrific crimes, that to this day remain unsolved, including a case of a body tied to a bed frame found in the Hawkesbury River in 1994 that to this day has everyone involved mystified. For every high profile case, there are hundreds of others that don’t get the same publicity, something that drives Justine on. “There are some good reasons and worrying reasons why some cases get coverage and others don’t” Justine said. “The Daniel Morecombe case for example, his parents made sure that the search for Daniel got attention. I think that’s so important, and sometimes families have to go to that extent. “Unfortunately sometimes cases with for

elp solve the most baffling crimes in Australian history? Justine Ford hopes you can. example, beautiful women, interest the public more than others, but they are ALL worthy. Everybody…every victim is important. “I was always interested in solving crimes, and as a kid I would run around with a magnifying glass in my hand looking for clues which was pretty silly. When I was older I worked on ‘Australia’s Most Wanted’, and I saw the role the media could play in helping police solve crimes. “Then I was a producer on ‘Missing Persons Unit’ and it highlighted for me, that I had to actively do something to help other people. “When I was researching this book I went straight to the police. I’m fortunate in that I’ve built strong relationships with investigators into missing persons or unsolved murders, so I went to them and asked what cases they thought I could put out there, then ask for information. “Often I get asked if I can put cases in a book by the families. Sometimes it starts with the families, and I talk to them first to make sure that I have the facts from them…often without doing any research, as I want to get the story from them first.” With so many crime shows on TV the question has to be asked why are people so
fascinated with murder and crime? “I think its so many things. The drama of it, and I guess people want to know why others behave in such extreme ways. It’s so far removed from how most of us think. “The ‘body on the frame’ is one such fascinating murder. In this case they don’t know who he he is, as nobody was reported missing. His fingerprints were washed away and there was a poor DNA sample. They did a facial reconstruction and put it on TV, yet so far no match. He could be from overseas, and this one is particularly mysterious because its such an old case and nothing the police have done has resulted in an identity. With no identity you don’t have much to go on. “Every year in Australia we have about 300 homicides, but I also look at missing persons cases. We have about 35,000 people go missing every year. That’s one person every 15 minutes. Australian Federal Police figures say 1.7 people per thousand a year in Australia go missing, and as a comparison in the UK that number is 3.6 per thousand, so that puts it in perspective. “I do think it is much harder to get away with crime now, especially with the advances in technology. Sometimes peoples ask me ‘is
there such a thing as a perfect murder?’ and the answer is no, because of the technology. “Murderers for example will have a much harder time getting away with it now and in the future. I thought about being a cop for years, but I thought no, get real you don’t want to get up that early in the morning…. but I’m doing it anyway! “A book like this has to be run past the police and I allow them to read it, just to make sure its factual and safe legally, plus also the lawyer at the publishers reads it to make sure it is okay to go ahead. You want to do your utmost best to make sure its right.” So what are the chances of falling victim to a crime like murder? Justine puts it in perspective. “Sadly the truth is most victims are known to their killers. In many cases it’s where things have simply got out of control in the home, and I’m not diminishing that in any way. LOCAL NOW - ARTISTS EXHIBITION
a survey of recent works by artists of the south east region
The exhibition is a survey of eight local artists work and captures the depth and diversity of artists working in the region. Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said Local Now raises awareness of the numerous talented artists creating work across Ipswich and surrounding areas of Somerset and the Scenic Rim. “These are eight prominent artists that live and work right here in our community. Local Now is an opportunity to celebrate the creative talent in our region. “Artists that are making interesting work deserve this recognition in our community and beyond. “This is not the first time the Ipswich Art Gallery has shown local artists, but this is the first group exhibition surveying practice across the region. The plan is to be able to showcase local talent through Local Now every two years, and this is a fantastic start.” Some artists have always lived in and around Ipswich, some were attracted to the beautiful natural environment, and others because it is an affordable place to live. Local Now gives them the opportunity to show their work in the largest and most visited regional gallery in Australia and to highlight the diversity and innovation that can happen outside of the major cities. The exhibition will feature paintings by Gary

Abkin, Merton Chambers and Sharon HarperGreentree, Mieke Den Otter’s textile art, Alinta Krauth multimedia installations, Kate Roberts’ jewellery, Christopher Trotter’s sculpture and photo-based artwork by LeAnne Vincent. The people and places around artists always influence what they produce. For some artists, their work in Local Now will give an insight into how they think about the place where they live. Making work about the places you know best is what Ipswich artist LeAnne Vincent promotes to other artists, and is the starting point for much of her work. “I often look to the local community when creating a new body of work. While for this exhibition I’ve highlighted the diversity of birds in Queensland, and how they’ve been affected by urban development, by using many images captured in the Ipswich region,” she says. “I exhibit widely and like to take my work outside of the Ipswich region. I often promote Ipswich when I travel and my work helps to do that. “It’s very important to be exhibiting this work locally. It’s a great opportunity for emerging and established local artists to gain access to a wider audience at the Ipswich Art Gallery and for Ipswich to promote the talent that we have here.” Artist Sharon Harper-Greentree says her work is very much focused on her local area near Marburg, “Black Snake Creek in the area near
where I live is a fairly major part of the visual aspect of the town. Depending on the season, the creek is just a few billabongs and at other times it can be a raging flood. But always it is a focus on the health and condition of the local environment. “My work traces the creek’s pathway from its source to the Brisbane River. It shows the beauty of that environment and addresses some issues of land care. I want get across the idea of the fragility of the creek’s environs along with the power of seasonal changes.” Alinta Krauth’s multimedia work has been specifically created for Local Now. “I’ve lived in and around the scenic rim my entire life and I’m inspired by being around there. The environment and nature is a recurring theme in my work,” she says. “I’m excited about being a part of Local Now and having local people experience my work, which may be a new type of work to them. I’m hoping to show that multimedia art is not outside of the reach of rural artists.” For other artists, the influence of the region is less obvious and more subtle. But all of them are passionate and proud about where they live. Local Now is on at the Ipswich Art Gallery from 19 September to 27 November. The Ipswich Art Gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm and is located in d’Arcy Doyle Place between Limestone and Brisbane Streets, Ipswich. Entry is free.

The fastest growing region in Queensland, Springfield – with it’s population increasing by more than 3000 each year and record investment in recent years – celebrated recently with those who helped make it happen. The list of achievements in recent times is certainly impressive: a $1.2 billion transport corridor with a dual railway line and a doubling of the Centenary highway, Mirvac’s $154 million expansion to Orion Shopping Centre, construction starting on the $550 million Dusit Thani resort, Orion Lagoon now open, and the new Mater Hospital about to open. “Looking at that one window alone that represents close to $2 billion in private and public investment over the past two years,” said Springfield Land Corporation Deputy Chairman Bob Sharpless. “And now we have Mater about to open their $85 million hospital, the $1.2 billion plan to build 2500 apartments for seniors, USQ’s expansion of their campus and the continuing rollout of health and education cities.” The visionary for Springfield is of course, Maha Sinnathamby, who saw something in the area in the early 1990s that others did not see. In 1997 he bought the land on a leap of extreme faith for $7.9 million. His vision for Springfield has always been an architecture for the city based on the interconnected pillars of health, education and information technology. “Health is going to be a principal employer, and we are going to drive that very hard, but you can’t divorce health from education, they go hand in hand,” Mr Sinnathamby said. “You’ve got to train people to work in the health sector right though the trades and administration to the top surgeons. Of course, information technology is also vitally important, and we are creating an IT hub here. These areas are where the jobs of tomorrow will be.” People who visit Springfield are impressed with the quality of this master planned community. According to Maha Sinnathamby quality cannot be compromised. “The minute you compromise on quality you lower the standard, and that’s a slippery slope. Why should we compromise?”
Maha regards developments such as Orion Lagoon, the new cinema complex, and the expansion of Orion Centre as bringing the region together. “People from Ipswich suburbs and surrounding areas will come here and that’s going to bond them because they will meet each other and have fun together. That’s the important thing.” Every entrepreneur and visionary needs a problem-solver and future planner, and that’s a role that Bob Sharpless has made his own. He has been central to arranging funding, negotiating with stakeholders and governments to keep things rolling along. This has been a 30-year partnership that has endured through some torrid and challenging times. “I’m a problem solver by nature so I’ve enjoyed the challenge,” Bob Sharpless said. “Maha is one of those guys who is very infectious and persuasive, and I’ve tended to manage the relationships with some of the more pragmatic people, while Maha’s been more in the creative space. It’s one thing to have the vision but the success is in the execution, so you need both. “We’ve been through some tough times, we’ve had to live on our wits, we’ve had to borrow money on very high interest rates, but we’ve had a very loyal team that has helped along the way.” With all the success to date both men are focused on “what needs to be done rather than what’s been achieved so far.” “While recognising and valuing the past I much prefer talking about the future and that resonates well with people. CEO Believes Ipswich Is On The Up The new CEO of the Ipswich Chamber of Commerce believes that there is only one way for the city’s small businesses to go, and that’s up. The newly appointed CEO of the Ipswich Chamber of Commerce sees Ipswich as a business that is staring down the face of huge potential, and it’s her goal to help business owners capitalise on the expected population and business explosion. Malini Saba is originally from Perth, where after finishing school studied Psychology. But the lure of overseas work enticed her to the US, where she set up home in San Francisco in the 1990’s during the boom period where Silicon Valley was the hub of business worldwide. She has run her own business for over 25 years, invested in 22 other businesses, travelled the world and has only ever worked for herself. Describing herself as a ‘Venture Capitalist’, Malini is up for a new challenge, and the role of CEO attracted her on several fronts. “I’ve only ever worked for myself,” Malini said. “My skill set comes from working in the US, where I learnt how to build companies. I love that start up period, bringing ideas to life and sticking through tough times because when times are tough, the only way is up! “I decided to return to Australia as I have a young daughter, and when she turned six.
I needed to decide how and where I want to live my life? My family is in Brisbane, so thought it was time to come home. “I’ve only been back a few months, and while I’m still chairperson of my own business, I wanted a new challenge. The Chamber role seemed like something I could use all my skills. I want the Chamber to be a hub of information, to help people grow their businesses. We have to remember every single big business was once a small business. “My own experience with Ipswich was very limited but what I have discovered while doing my research was that there is so much potential for and in this city. Yes there is growth in Springfield and Ripley, but I see the CBD on the cusp of growth too. I’ve been in so many countries where there was no foundation for such growth and Ipswich has that. It’s inevitable that the growth will happen, and RAAF Amberley in Ipswich’s backyard is proof of that, it is such a vital community to the Ipswich economy.” Malini comes to Ipswich as an outsider, but sees that as her big advantage in the role. “One of my advantages coming to Ipswich is that I see the city as an outsider, with no history, no preconceived ideas and with a

completely clean slate,” Malini said. “It’s about all of us working together to make this place grow. I see Ipswich as a big start-up company, and I’m ready to see it reach full potential. “Three weeks into the job my goal still is to meet people and to understand what they want, and what they need. Then I really will know what has to happen. It’s important for me to understand the culture of Ipswich before I move ahead.” Malini has seen business in tough times, and good times. The world was a very different place in the 1990’s and again in the 2000’s, but she thinks Ipswich needs to look ahead, and not back. “For every bad year in business, it means there is five good years ahead of it. We have to have that attitude. Nothing can stay down forever, business can only go up. Take the attitude that ‘tomorrow is going to be a better day’. “Ipswich is a diamond…it’s time to start polishing it. Seeing it as an outsider, I wouldn’t say that if I honestly didn’t believe it. I love challenges and if I didn’t think it was possible I wouldn’t have taken on the role. “No matter what the hurdles are we’ll make it. We’re all in this together.”

The show times are from 10.30am to 11.30am and from 1.30pm to 2.30pm on September 30 at Ipswich Central Library and from 1.30pm to 2.30pm on October 1 at Orion Springfield Central. Simply collect a construction kit to build your bridge in the library or at home. “Suitable for children aged five years and over the kits will be available at all branches of Ipswich Libraries during library opening hours between September 21 and October 2.”
KIDS MOVIE Cr Pahlke said the holiday program would conclude with a screening of the movie Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day. The PG movie is the Disney adaption of the picture story book first published in 1972. The screening will be held in the Barry Jones Auditorium in the Ipswich Central Library building from 10am on October 2. Tickets are only $1.20 per ticket and this is payable at the time of booking. Cr Pahlke said apart from the movie session all activities were free for library members. Bookings are essential for all other activities as spaces are limited. Call to tradies to help Blaise The call has gone out to the ‘Tradies of Ipswich’ to help Swich On on September 26 as they plan to change the life of the Wyatt family. Fundraising has been underway for quite a while now to help Blaise Wyatt who suffers a severe form of spastic quadriplegic cerebral palsy and is in constant need of funds to help his rehabilitation. He needs treatment that is only offered in the US, with a rehabilitation device called the ‘Therasuit’. Late last year Swich ON ran a fundraising golf day at the Gailes Golf club along with sponsor McNamara & Associates and over $10,000 was raised. Simon’s Home Timber and Hardware heard about the cause and they too decided to jump on board. The objective is to contribute towards Blaise’s treatment room downstairs at his family home, however after inspecting the house there is a lot of work that needs to be done, so September 26 is the day. Can you help? Blaise’s uncle (Andrew) is a builder and has already been chipping away at this place for a couple of years but he needs to find people willing to help him out and get a lot of the external work completed in one day. Andrew will have most of the preliminary work completed before the day and will have the site ready to go. With two boutiques in the heart of Brisbane’s retail mecca, Pia Du Pradal has built a name for herself designing and making outfits that are perfect for the Queensland climate. Outfits from her collection will be on display at the Ipswich Fashion Festival Gala this month, and with stores in the iconic Brisbane Arcade and Milton’s Park Road, Pia is excited to bring her collection to Ipswich. Her collections of smart casual, corporate, evening and formal wear are all made in Brisbane, and she has a loyal clientele including former Governor-General Quentin Bryce. Suits and dresses use natural fibres, especially cotton as well as silk and wool, making it a trademark of her work. “Our first shop was in Park Road, and at that stage it was a very trendy area, in fact the beginning of the ‘café society’ in Brisbane. I’ve never been a fan of shopping centres to be honest, so this gives me freedom.” Originally from South Africa, Pia arrived in 1986 with her husband and settled in Brisbane, after travelling to Europe and several areas of Africa before settling down under. “My parents were Danish, and I was educated in both Denmark and Cape Town in South Africa. I also lived in Botswana for eight years, and my actual background is in Social Anthropology. “Politically things got hot in South Africa and we had to decide to stay there for the rest of our lives or move. We didn’t have Google maps back then, but we’d heard that Brisbane was near the Barrier Reef, so after deciding to migrate, when we got here we got the shock of our lives. The people were so lovely though we

decided to stay, and I’ve been here ever since! “I didn’t plan to start a business, but as my qualifications weren’t recognised here I, like most migrants, just did what I had to do. “So I started making clothes in my garage, and I employed out workers…one of those people still works for me! Pretty soon I learnt that if I wanted to control the product and the quality I would have to make them myself and I’ve always stuck to that. “It’s an ongoing evolution when you decide to design and make an outfit. If you see our catalogue you might think that a jacket was similar to one from five years ago, but it’s not at all. Detailing, sleeves and shoulder lines have all changed, but it will still retain that classic simple line. Pia’s most famous customer is former Governor General Quentin Bryce, who has changed the way the brand is viewed. “It’s been wonderful working with Quentin Bryce. She’s a very good person, and it has been a tremendous honour, plus she’s wonderful with our staff. “My advice to young designers is to get plenty of work in the industry before going out on their own. It’s vital to know how to sew, and to be able to make a pattern. Many designers think its about drawing a sketch then someone else does all the work, but if you can sew you can get a better idea about bringing it all together. “I can’t stress enough that our product is really a result of teamwork. Anyone can have an idea, but having a good machinist is something special, along with a good cutter who understands the fabric…that’s priceless. It’s not just a matter of coming up with a jacket in a trendy colour. “In many respects I wish I hadn’t given the brand my name, as everything we do is a team effort!” Pia Du Pradal will be represented by a collection of her work at the Ipswich Fashion Festival Gala on Friday September 25th. Helping people reach their financial goals, Dianne Charman from Jade Financial Group is in an unusual position, as she goes to work every day with people she loves dearly, and she really puts the ‘family’ in ‘Family Business’. “My husband works with me in the business, along with my niece, and my sister,” Dianne told Ipswich Life. “I’m in charge (apparently), and I come to work every day and spend it with people I love. We are building something together here…it’s a different type of leadership, but they are all here because they are really good at what they do. “The business has been around for over 20 years and we provide financial advice for people, approaching it in a collaborative manner with our clients, to help them achieve what they want. We work well because we are a small business, and I find that people like to deal with someone who owns the business, as it means we aren’t going anyway. “In my opinion it’s essential to be part of the Chamber of Commerce. I joined the Chamber because I needed to know who is in business in Ipswich,” Dianne said. “How do they run their business? What can I learn from them, and how can I contribute to the community. I knew if I did that I’d get support, and that’s what the chamber’s been to me.

Australian Hornets fly strike mission into Syria Two RAAF F/A-18A Hornets have for the first time crossed the Syrian border on an air strike mission described as “on-call interdiction and dynamic targeting support.” The Hornets returned to home base without being called upon to deliver weapons on target. ‘On-call interdiction’ requires that attacking aircraft be armed and ready to attack a target of opportunity, with tasking and targeting information passed to aircrews while airborne, while ‘dynamic targeting’ is the active process of identifying, prosecuting and engaging emerging targets – targets that may not be identified before the mission. The RAAF Hornets and coalition fighters were supported by air refuellers and surveillance aircraft such as RAAF KC-30A MRTT and E-7A Airborne Early Warning and Control aircraft. ATG Commander, Air Commodore Stu Bellingham said the Hornets searched points of interest for enemy activity in eastern Syria, reporting to the coalition’s Combined Air Operations Centre through the E-7A aircraft.

“Daesh controls a large amount of territory in eastern Syria that serves as a source of recruitment and oil revenues, and as a base from which it continues to launch attacks into Iraq”, he said. “The Hornets were also prepared for any short notice high priority tasking which could include surveillance and weapons release.” The Australian Task Group is part of Operation OKRA, Australia’s contribution to the international effort to combat the Daesh terrorist threat in Iraq and Syria. Defence says the Australian ATG will continue to plan and conduct air strikes against Daesh in Iraq and Syria as part of coalition strike operations aimed at disrupting and degrading Daesh strongholds. Defence members issue challenge Australian Defence Force personnel are bleeding example in the nation’s largest blood challenge. The annual Defence Blood Challenge, now in its seventh year, challenges Navy, Army, Air Force and Defence civilians to compete from now up until December 8th to make the greatest number of blood donations. Last year, Defence force personnel gave more than 5,400 blood donations, enough to potentially save 16,200 lives. This year, they are hoping to save the lives of more than 18,000 Australians through blood donations. Blood Service spokesperson, Amy McDowell said that Ipswich Defence personnel were already booked in to make their lifesaving donations. “Each year, the Challenge grows and sees more lives saved” she said. “Given their already outstanding contribution to the nation, it is wonderful to see our Defence personnel find the time to donate blood. “Every donation helps to save three
lives, including the treatment of cancer patients, people with blood disorders, unborn babies, mothers during childbirth, trauma victims and even military members.” The Challenge is a key part of the Blood Service’s Red25 program, a unique movement in which groups and organisations around Australia unite to save lives through blood donations. Red25 has a clear and concise mission – to achieve 25 per cent of Australia’s blood donations. The challenge is out to all ADF and Defence Civilians. RAAF trains RAF loadmasters Training foreign aircrew members is not usually assigned to an Australian Defence group but that is now the case with two Royal Air Force crewmen undergoing C-17A loadmaster training at RAAF Amberley. The main reason is that the base has the only C-17A Cargo Compartment Trainer system installed outside the United States. The CCT replicates the cargo compartment of the C-17, enabling realistic practical training without having to use an actual aircraft. The CCT is more than a fuselage shell, it is a fully functional system that can realistically simulate both day and night operating and loading conditions for loadmaster, aeromedical evacuation and aeromedical specialist training. The facility includes classrooms, loading vehicles, simulated cargo and other training assets.
