Where worlds collide Google the name ‘Maeve Dermody’ and one expression that comes up constantly is “Next Big Thing”. It’s fair to say that Maeve is an actress who continues to rise in the acting stakes, and her latest production casts her in one of the most ambitious Australian shows ever produced. ‘Serangoon Road’ which began this week on ABC1 is a co-production between HBO and the ABC. If you’re not familiar with HBO, you might have heard of some of their shows…namely ‘True Blood’, ‘Boardwalk Empire’ and ‘Game of Thrones’ to name a few. Interested now? Thought you might be dear reader… ‘Serangood Road’ is set in the mid 1960s in a time of upheaval in Singapore. As the British pull out, a new nation is about to be born. Maeve stars alongside Don Hany, Joan Chen and Wonderland’s Michael Dorman in this ambitious ten part series which is the first time that HBO has joined an Australian network to make a series. Maeve has appeared in many notable projects, including ‘Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms’, ‘Griff the Invisible’, ‘Black Water’, ‘Rake’, ‘Paper Giants’ and most recently ‘Power Games’, the Murdoch vs Packer mini-series that just aired…all things that have been successful, so it begs the question does Maeve have a ‘Midas Touch’? “Yes, it must be me… I take all the credit! (Laughs) No, I think Australian TV is having a

bit of a renaissance at the moment, and I’ve just been lucky to work with good directors, good productions and of course I can’t take all the credit. “I think we’ve watched American and Brit TV for so long the question is why can’t we do that, and now we are watching more home grown drama than ever.” Each role that Maeve has played has been vastly different from the last, and it’s a route that she hopes to continue, especially with the attention ‘Serangoon Road’ is going to get. “Its my greatest wish to mix things up. It’s not calculated to make my CV look good, more of a personal challenge. I love variety and I want to challenge myself. I want to think about new things and grow a bit hopefully. “It was part of the reason that director Peter Andrikidis (who Maeve worked with on ‘Bikie Wars’) fought for me to get on this show, as we worked together before and its like going to work with friends then. I was so excited when Joan Chen signed on. I didn’t do a lot of scenes with her but it’s just great being around her. People like that raise the bar when you are

around them. The same with Rachael Blake… just great to be on set with people like that.” Maeve spent over five months living in Asia making the show, and spoke about what it was like being overseas for so long before coming home. “Two thirds were filmed in Indonesia and the rest in Singapore. A lot of the stuff that is distinctly Singapore was filmed on the actual locations. “I was there for five months all up. What did I miss most? I missed going for a walk to be honest, there were wild monkeys everywhere and the air was so thick and steamy. It lulls you to be honest, I think your body thinks that you’re half asleep at first, but you do get used to it after a while. To avoid getting sweaty when filming there were a lot of hand held fans. “They have put a lot of money into this, and you can never know what its going to be like until it comes out. It feels quite hybrid to me, and that’s the result of being an HBO/ ABC co-production. Being shot in Indonesia there were local actors and an Indonesian

crew, it was a strange mix of sounds and taste, a real international production. If this show has legs then that for me is the most interesting thing about it. The ABC are promoting it as an international show and counting on it being watched. I really thing we should be doing more production with Asia. We have so much shared history together. “I did a heap of research when I got the role to learn about that period. I watched a great ten hour documentary about the events and before filming started I had two weeks free so I went to all the museums in Singapore and immersed myself in all that history. “I guess I’m always fascinated in women’s stories in that moment when you step into their lives, despite what the cultural impediments might be. That kind of sense of really asking what you want, what you’re passionate about, what you seek out…that’s what my character goes through. “I’ve never been a bored housewife as my character was, but I did feel really isolated living there in a villa for so long in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by mostly men on the production. That felt a little bit alienating. That helped when playing the role.” ‘Serangoon Road’ is a ten part series that screens Sunday nights on ABC1. Gailes Golf Academy

Golfing Tips with Luke Prosser

The chipping technique Set up with your body and club square to the target, keeping your weight position even or centred (50/50). Next is ball position. Place the ball at the base of the swing arc. When your body weight is positioned 50/50 left and right the ball will be the middle of your stance. This is most important to ensure that when you strike the ball at impact the club returns to its neutral position. Clubs are designed with different lofts and bounce angles for a reason, so where possible try not to change or manipulate the original design of the golf club. If you need to hit a different shot, choose a different club. Once you are square to the target with the ball in the correct position, your setup will be very easy to repeat and far more consistent than the traditional open club, open stance technique that has many variables. Now that your setup and ball position are done, swing the club on your normal swing (plane) line like it does with every other swing. What we are trying to do from here, is abbreviate the movement of your normal take away and swing to develop the chipping swing. Stay relaxed and ‘Let the club swing’. Now that you have a very consistent set up and only one way to swing the club. Practice the same setup and swing technique with all the clubs you chip with, you will find it much easier to focus on what you are doing because it doesn’t change from club to club. This technique will produce much more consistent results for a stress free approach to your chipping. Equipment tip - Make sure the wedge or wedges you use are the suitable loft and bounce for the way you like to play your shots. Bounce angle and loft is very important equipment and it’s workings so that you pick the correct club for each shot. Luke Prosser Head PGA Golf Professional Gailes Golf Club

Life in the Little League All of a sudden, Tommy Little is everywhere. The little man is big in TV terms… no pun intended. After pashing Claudia Karvan in ‘The Time of Our Lives’, Little is also one of the hosts on the Wednesday night hit ‘This Week Live’. Now Tommy is enjoying reaching a family audience on ‘A League of Their Own’ on Ten. A mix of a sports quiz with a touch of ‘It’s a Knockout’, the show opened to strong ratings last week and is destined to become a favourite for families and sports fans. Team Captains Pat Cash and Eamon Sullivan share the stage with Little, who said that there was no end of comedians and sports stars willing to come on the show, which will have a ten-episode run, and is based on the same show that has run in the UK for six years… which proves it’s a winning formula. “We had some amazing people come on the show. We had Dawn Fraser, Anthony Mundine, Mark Waugh….all these sports stars who have a chance to let their hair down and don’t do stuff they don’t normally get to do. “Anthony Mundine was tops, I know he doesn’t bring ‘fun’ and ‘funny’ to mind, but he came on as a surprise guest in one of the shows. One of the team captains was being a bit lippy so I teed up Anthony to sort him out and he was great, a joy to work with.” Ten has previously had big success with shows like this, as ‘Talking About Your

Generation’ proved with a long and popular run. With the show such a hit overseas, does that give Tommy an advantage in that it should be a sure thing? “We finish each show with a big end game which is a physical challenge. We were able to pick the best end games from six seasons in the UK, but everything else is all done here, we are an Aussie production so we write our own sports questions as we all love our sport. “In reality it’s a big dumb comedy sports show that has something for everyone, as you can watch it with the whole family. You always want more viewers of course, but I’m stoked with how it has been received.” “It’s all happened very slowly for me, I can assure you it wasn’t one day nothing, the next everything. ‘Time of our Lives’ has just finished and I did that a year ago, but all these shows I’ve been working on for a long time. I shouldn’t talk about ‘Time of Our Lives’ when I’m sitting here in the Ten building.” Which brings us to the fact that he pashed Claudia Karvan. OUR Claudia. A national treasure. “Mate, I’m really sorry for cutting your lunch. To be honest, any jokes that come my way about that kiss with Claudia just stink of envy. I’m just glad there’s proof, it was on TV! Look…there it is.” ‘A League Of Their Own’ screens Monday nights on Network Ten.

Help for the hurting We are all aware of it, but most of us do not know how to handle it - and that’s Homelessness. Being an inner-city church, Central Church sees first-hand how hard it can be for some people. On most nights of the year there is someone sleeping somewhere on the church property. Yes, it’s a complicated issue. There are many reasons why people find themselves homeless. Some have genuinely hit a rough patch of life leaving them with nowhere to go. Others have made bad decisions. But whatever the reason, they need support. In October, Central Church Ipswich is stepping into the gap by offering a community expo at which people who are doing it tough can access information about how they can find accommodation, get legal help, access Centrelink, get medical help and much more. Central Church is partnering with Ipswich Assist to offer ‘Streetlinks’ on Wednesday October 2. Our hope is that it will provide more than information, but will also offer hope and a sense that people do not have to ‘go it alone’. If you would like more information about this important community event, contact Paul Blake at Ipswich Assist on 3413 1070. Scott Muir, Snr Pastor

‘Fighting for Blair’ - Shayne Neumann re-elected Bucking the voting trend against the Federal Labor Government, local MP Shayne Neumann has won over Ipswich people in the Electorate of Blair, securing more than 55 per cent of the vote. He engaged relentlessly with the community, highlighted dissatisfaction with the Queensland LNP government, and ran a Obama-like campaign across an electorate stretching from Ipswich to north of Kilcoy. “In 2010, Labor got smashed in Queensland, with a swing of more than five per cent, but we managed to hold the swing in Blair to less than half that,” Mr Neumann said. “So, over the next three years we campaigned continuously; I held the first mobile office just days after the election result. People were amazed. We conducted 325 mobile offices during those three years. It was a very targeted, coordinated and strategic campaign.” With the downturn in Labor’s prospects following debilitating leaks out of Canberra, Shayne Neumann had to contend with the prospect of losing the election. “We put in place a strategy to ‘hang on for grim death’, and hopefully hold the tide against Labor,” he said. “We were helped by Kevin Rudd coming back as PM, with his residual popularity here in Queensland. So it was the Kevin and Shayne show, on billboards and in campaign material, we tapped in to that Queensland sentiment. “Secondly, we capitalised on people not wanting ‘Campbell’s Queensland’ to become ‘Abbott’s Australia’: cuts to jobs, services and funding. So we said ‘right, if Tony Abbott wins you lose’, these are the consequences to you, your family and the community if Tony Abbott wins.” Such was the success of another aspect of the campaign, which focused on nurses, public servants, school teachers, blue collar workers and the like, that they became volunteers, taking flyers to railway stations, shopping centres and public places. The message was getting through. “Next, we built coalitions of groups in the community whom

we felt could help us win. Beyond Labor’s base we reached out to groups who weren’t necessarily political but had ideas that agreed with mine – in areas such as disabilities, the arts, the Defence Forces, churches, sporting clubs and the like,” Mr Neumann said. “We were reaching out and engaging with the community, finding out what the issues were, how we could help, and how we could prosecute the case for them.” Ultimately, Blair had to be won for Labor or all would be lost, so attention turned to a suburb-by-suburb analysis of voting patterns. “We door-knocked, we put people on the electoral roll in suburbs that were traditional Labor areas, we did mobile offices in those areas more regularly, we did telephone canvassing – more than 22,500 calls into people’s homes,” Mr Neumann said. “We produced suburb-specific brochures for delivery into letterboxes across Ipswich, identifying when I would be in their

suburb. I was engaging directly with people, talking to them about issues that were of interest to them – and reminding them of my long standing, born-and-bred commitment to Ipswich. “It was an Obama-like ground game, with 40 people making phone calls, using the information from our focus groups, and culminating in 260 people working on election day. “What people were saying about me in our polling was that I was hard working, determined and that I fight for the electorate, so that became our slogan: ‘Only Shayne Neumann fights for Blair’... and we delivered, we delivered everything from the Ipswich Motorway to the Blacksoil Interchange, to upgrades to schools and hospitals and development projects in Springfield, and we reminded them constantly.” Rebuilding the Labor brand is now essential to the party being competitive in future elections. Shayne Neumann says that Labor has to ‘get off the front pages’. “Our problem was that ‘disunity is death in politics’, we had leadership dysfunction and people didn’t like that. We won with our policies but we lost the politics through disunity. Now that the Rudd and Gillard era is over we need to build people’s trust in us, in terms of leadership, and we can’t engage in the political ‘wars’ that have afflicted us in the past three years.” Mr Neumann supports Bill Shorten as the next parliamentary leader of the Labor Party, as the first step in uniting the party behind one leader. “I don’t see a need for a massive policy review, but we really need to sell and communicate our policies better. “We need to get over the leadership tension, communicate our policies better, and we need to re-engage with people’s dreams, goals and aspirations. We need to talk about what people want, not what we feel is necessary in the best interests of us.” Caption: Shayne Neumann and staff celebrate their electoral victory.

Shayne Neumann says

“Thank you” to the people of Ipswich I am humbled and privileged to be elected by the people of Ipswich and the Somerset region for a third term in the Federal Parliament. We now have a change of Government but I will continue to fight for this electorate.

Free Family Fun at Ipswich Turf Club Ipswich Turf Club will again host the Labour Day Race Day & Family Fun Day on the Labour Day Public Holiday, Monday 7th October 2013. It’s a great day out for family and friends, and has proved popular with Ipswich residents, with its family community theme. When first held in 2007 there were 1600 people in attendance and this number has grown steadily to 4,000. In 2013 the expected attendance will grow even further with the introduction of the ‘18+ Holiday Celebration Marquee’. The marquee has been introduced due to demand from many Ipswich Cup patrons who are after a similar experience to Ipswich Cup Day. This year, the meeting has been moved from May to October to provide a great opportunity to widen the appeal of the day. at Ipswich Turf Club, there will be plenty of FREE entertainment on offer for families. The popular fairground featuring a variety of fun rides will once again be on offer together with FREE fairy floss, FREE face painting and FREE access to the barnyard babies. For the 18+ crowd there’s the Celebration Marquee positioned along the fence line on the grandstand side, in an area away from the fairground. Live band Wasabi will be playing throughout the afternoon in the marquee area creating that lazy summer afternoon vibe. Fighting robots return to battle at Art Gallery

Australia’s champion fighting robots will be decided next month when the Ipswich Art Gallery hosts the Australian Robowars Nationals 2013. Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said the two-day event would be held at the Gallery during the Labor Day long weekend on October 5 and 6. “Nearly two thousand people came to see Australia’s best bots do battle at the Gallery last year and with interest in combat robotics on the increase, big attendances are expected again,” Cr Pisasale said. “Gallery visitors will see the two most popular classes of robots in Australia go head to head over the two days with the

150 gram Antweight bots and 13.6 kilogram Featherweight robots taking to the speciallydesigned combat arena. “It is thrilling action to watch and sparks will fly as the robots try to demolish one another in their quest to become Australia’s best.” Queensland Robotic Sports Club president Steve Martin said the Australian Robowars Nationals had grown over the past three years with even more enthusiasts expected to compete in this year’s event. “The fast-paced event means that spectators will see the robots returning to the arena over multiple rounds so they can watch their favourite bots progress over the two days,” Mr Martin said. “More robots and less time will always make the days more frantic for the builders but this means more fights for the robots as well. Mr Martin said big didn’t necessarily mean better in the world of combat robotics. “While a big weapon always puts you in an attacking advantage, one of the most effective ways of winning a fight is to control your opponent,” he said. “This doesn’t always come from the biggest weapon; it can come from a smart design which lets you turn your opponent’s weapon against them.” The Australian Robowars Nationals 2013 is presented by the Queensland Robotics Sports Club and the Ipswich Art Gallery and will run daily from 10.30am–4.30pm with a one hour competition break from 12.30pm–1.30pm. The Ipswich Art Gallery is open daily from 10am to 5pm and is located at d’Arcy Doyle Place between Limestone and Brisbane Streets, Ipswich. Entry to the Australian Robowars Nationals 2013 is free.

Growing confidence in IpswichMall Four retailers have relocated or opened their stores in the same part of the Ipswich Mall, showing confidence in the area. Navie’s Jewellers which was previously near the Railway Station, A Lot of Books which was located in the top end of the mall, along with new stores Glorious Nails and Autographed Memorabilia, have all opened the doors in recent days. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale presented certificates to all the new retailers at the site of three of the stores, just outside Harvey Norman, which is proving to be a hot spot for business. “The CBD over the years has been fighting back, nobody is denying that ten years ago it was really struggling,” said Mayor Pisasale at the presentation. “When I hear people saying they don’t go to the CBD, they don’t realise that these businesses are fighting for your retail dollar. “Nobody said it isn’t tough, but I urge people in the community to come in and give them a go. Find out what’s happening here and enjoy it. CBD’s are strong because of people, and its great to see them coming here and investing. “We’re starting to see growth in the CBD now with Icon coming along and the influx or people it will bring with it. I see how

much money is spent in Brisbane by Ipswich people. We need to change the culture and the habits of people who have been jumping in their cars to go shopping. “It benefits us all, your kids, your grandkids to shop in Ipswich. Now we just need the State Government to support the growth areas.” Sue from Navies Jewellers said the move to just outside Harvey Norman has been great for business. “We’re getting a lot more traffic now, including people who didn’t even know where we were before, its been great,” she said.Caption: (Front) Kim and Nancy from Glorious Nails with Mayor Paul Pisasale, plus (back L-R) David (A Lot of Books), Sue, (Navies), Paula (A Lot of Books), Wayne (Navies) along with Corey and Lorelle from Autographed Memorabilia.

and think about how we can get this to come together before the morning rushes away. Layering is always a fashionistas best friend but it is never as easy as they make it look. Not only do we have colours to look at, we also have textures of different fabrics about to meet each other and in most cases we don’t want to look like we have gained ten kilos. Fling your dress down first on your bed and then lay down the light blue cardigan... then the mustard jacket and then the navy scarf, plonk the cute strappy sandals up there and then change them for your brown boots and the sky is the limit. Get creative! It might be your new finishing touch!

This goes with that At 6.00am it is time to get dressed for the promising warm sun shining day ahead, however it is currently nine degrees and that floral dress is not looking so practical all of a sudden. ENTERTAINMENT

That’s entertainment WITH 97.3 FM’S LOUISE

Our favourite rock goddess Pink has been named Billboard Magazine’s Woman Of The Year — and is there a more deserving person? Pink’s just finished a run of 46 sold out shows on the Australian leg of her Truth About Love tour and we can’t wait to have her back again next time!

Best. Concerts. EVER. Paige C from Karalee (ooh… that rhymes!) saw our callout on Facebook and gave us her top five concerts of all time. Thanks Paige, a double movie pass is on its way to you. 1. Muse Sydney Big Day out in January 2010, then again in concert in Sydney December 2010! Blew my mind. ‘Knights of Cydonia’ is the BEST song ever written! Hopefully they play it at their concert in December this year. 2. Pink I have seen all 3 concerts she has bought to Australia. Her shows are the complete package — acrobatics, hot back up dancers and amazing live performance! The mix of her old and new music in Brisbane this year was so clever 3. AC/DC Saw this one at ANZ stadium in Sydney 2010 with 80,000 people. One of the great rock shows. ‘Thunderstruck’ was amazing! 4. Metallica A rock show of the greatest kind — Sydney, Acer Arena, 2010! Their best ever album was ‘S & M’ — I used to study to it! 5. Powderfinger Big Day Out, Sydney 2010! One of the last times they performed before busting up :-(. So sad — they were sooooooo good!

Who says vinyls dead? Daft Punks latest album Random Access Memories has played a huge role in reviving the format. In only four months since its release, Random Access Memories has become the BestSelling vinyl of all time on Amazon.

HOW TO PLAY: Fill in the blank squares so that each row, each column and each 3-by-3 block contain all of the digits 1 to 9. If you use logic you can solve the puzzle without guesswork. Answers on page 20

Harry Potter fans rejoice! JK Rowling (below) is making her screenwriting debut by penning a series of Harry Potter universe spin off movies. The first film is: “Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them”, which is based on a textbook used by Harry Potter and his classmates at Hogwarts. Rowling said: “‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’ is neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world.”

Rockers Limp Bizkit (below) have announced a set of Aussie tour dates for later this year. They’ll be performing at Soundwave October 25 at the Brisbane Riverstage.

It’s looking likely that Christine McVie (above) MAY join Fleetwood Mac on stage in their Australian tour later this year. Although she hasn’t toured with the group recently, reports are that Stevie Nicks has invited McVie to sing a couple of songs on stage in their upcoming London shows. Fingers crossed it goes well, and we get to hear the stunning ‘Song Bird’ live. Colin Firth will be donning a big yellow raincoat and gumboots for his next role… well, sort of. He’s signed on to be the voice of Paddington Bear in an upcoming movie. Firth said: “Paddington will be computer generated, and I will speak his lines with, I suspect, a slight Peruvian flavour. Every other character in the film will be real, live human beings”. We look forward to seeing this bear find a home on the big screen soon.

Email your Top 5 of your favourite anything (up to you) and a photo of yourself to darren@strikepublications.com.au — there’s a double movie pass for each winner!

SUDOKU

Australia’s Got Talent judge and former Spice Girl, Geri Halliwell (below), is set to release a new album in October. It’s her first new music since 2005.

And congratulations to actress Emily Blunt and her husband John Krasinski (below) who have announced that they are expecting their first child.

The upcoming Pirates of the Carribean sequel — number 5 — has been delayed. Movie critics think production has been delayed to make way for Disney’s other upcoming flick Ant-Man. The release date of Ant-Man was recently moved up to three weeks before the Pirates sequel was previously slated for release. Ant-man is following the trend of other recent Marvel Comics hero movies that are taking the box office by storm.

Talking Beer WITH PETER COULTAS AT THE YAMANTO TAVERN

Every now and then we get to try a beer that leaves us with that special smile of satisfaction and a sigh of “WOW”. ‘Little Creatures IPA’ has finally arrived and it’s not so little. This 6.4% on alcohol and big hops is the first new beer from Little Creatures in six years. A cross between British & American styles, this Aussie take on IPA produces an explosion of hops and gentle kick of alcohol. This India Pale Ale (60IBU) uses aroma flavour and bitterness hops including Amarillo(US), Southern Cross (NZ) East Kent Gording (UK)and Victoria Secret (Aus). It’s the amazing nose of spice and citrus of this beer that captured me. On the palate the flavours keep giving and with a hit of aniseed and savoury notes. This beer is very much a foodie’s beer. Little Creatures IPA has been released in 4 packs and available on tap at

selected venues. If you are looking for a match with a nice curry or some hot spicy dishes then I would certainly recommend this one. Put this one on the shopping list if you dare. Two new imports to watch out for from Anchor Brewing San Francisco. ..Anchor Steam Ale & Pale Ale. One of the first American craft beer produces these two beers are great examples of easy drinking yet deliver in flavour & enjoyment. Take some time in your Local and enjoy the challenge of choice- try at least one new beer a week and ‘Welcome to the Revolution’. The exercise enables Air Force personnel to practise their air defence skills to maintain the integrity of Australian air space and protect vital infrastructure. Defence Ball raises funds for Legacy This year’s Australian Aerospace Defence Force Charity Ball held at the Brisbane Convention Centre was a grand occasion with a Defence Community purpose. This year’s event raised more than $140,000 for Legacy, the organisation that cares for families who lose a loved one while serving Australia. It was an evening of good food and wine, entertainment, dancing and fun for the 730 people who attended, and the auctions that brought in the money were well supported. Most attention turned to the winner of a

BY MARK BOURIS

Gen Y is for real Ever since I realised there was a ‘Generation Y’ I’ve been reading how educated, fickle, lazy and entitled they are. I came to expect that anyone aged 15 to 30 would prefer a laptop to a car and would prefer the flexibility of cool employment to the stability of owning a home. So it was strange to find news to the contrary over the past week. A survey from Western Australia – the Financial Fitness Index – found that Generation Y had become more careful with their money than the other generations surveyed, with 56 per cent becoming more conservative in the previous year. One of the things we notice about Generation Y is their preparedness to change jobs, with the ABS labour mobility data showing that 20 – 24 year olds are three times more likely to change jobs in a year than 45 – 54 year olds. Gen Ys also have ready acceptance of contract and ‘project’ employment, with many of these skills-based projects being conducted with no entitlements. Earlier generations found it hard to get a mortgage when they were hopping between employers

and relying on contracts. The discrepancy between how Gen Ys want to work and how the financial services industry operates doesn’t stop at mortgages. Our superannuation system is predicated on time spent in PAYG employment. How is the generation currently in their twenties going to make this system work for them when their earnings come from contract employment, which usually excludes super? Home ownership is a huge part of financial stability in this country and I believe this generation will, to a certain extent, just have to knuckle down. Simply showing a savings history is not enough – lenders typically look for either fulltime employees or long term written contracts. But as Gen Y becomes more conservative, mortgage lenders will have to think about meeting them halfway. There’s no point in creating an economy filled with contract employment if we then attempt to shut these workers out of the housing market. So how are we going to make this work? Will Gen Y ‘fake it’ and go into stable employment long enough to get a mortgage? Or will lenders become realistic about how the labour market works for twenty-something’s? I’d love to hear what you think, or give Mike a call at YBR Ipswich on 07 3608 4080.

Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior, said: “We’ve had a lot of customer feedback suggesting owners would like a slightly tougher-looking Outback with greater body protection, which is especially useful on rural roads where this wagon rates highly.

“These MY14 upgrades deliver on both fronts and will help maintain Outback’s profile as one of the most versatile and capable wagons on Australian roads. “The introduction of the diesel auto variant earlier this year combined with these latest changes highlights our long-term commitment to refining and enhancing our cars with the passing of each model year, in line with our All 4 the Driver customer promise.” Outback 2.5i Premium gained Subaru’s award-winning EyeSight™ driver assist system in addition to the colour information display. Holden confirms Barina RS model Holden has announced it will add a new RS sports model to its popular Barina small car range before the end of the year, with confirmation that the first Barina RS cars have arrived in Australia. Barina RS also offers sports interior finishes including sport seats with RS branding and flat bottomed steering wheel.

Local engineering development work for Barina RS includes a unique-for-Australia electric power steering tune that was undertaken by Holden’s own engineers. Audi Q5 adds appeal

The Audi Q5 now offers even more value to premium SUV buyers. From 2014, every Q5 model will come with up to $3,550 worth of additional standard specification to further secure its place at the top of the premium SUV segment. “With almost 12,000 vehicles sold in Australia, the Q5 model is one of the most important models in our line-up,” said Audi Managing Director, Andrew Doyle. “The Audi Q5 is currently the fastestselling premium SUV of its size in Australia, and now with the additional equipment upgrades, we expect that the Q5 will maintain its leading position,” said Mr Doyle. In addition to the already generous list of standard equipment, the Audi Q5 2.0 TDI and TFSI models now gain Xenon headlights and 3-zone climate control as standard, while the 3.0 TDI and TFSI models gain 19inch alloy wheels and extended paintwork that now colours the lower bumper sections (front and rear) and lower side sills. The 165kW/350Nm 2.0 TFSI engine is now Euro 6 compliant, with impressive fuel consumption of 7.9 litres per 100km. Digital radio (DAB plus) is now optionally available for all models for a cost of $800. The recently launched Audi SQ5 TDI also features two running changes. A space saver spare tyre is now standard, and the shift paddles on the steering wheel are now larger, making it easier for drivers to make gearchanges manually.

Full specifications and features of Barina RS including powertrain options and pricing will be available at launch. For more information on this and all things Holden, contact local dealer Llewellyns on 3282 2922.

Toyota Corolla sales pass 40 million The world’s best-selling car, Toyota Corolla, has scaled new heights with achieving an unprecedented 40 million sales.

BMW Group reports record sales month BMW Group reported its highest ever sales for the month of August, with a total of 139,648 vehicles delivered worldwide, an increase of 14.8% over the same month last year (prev. yr. 121,628). Worldwide sales year-to-date also reached an all-time high with 1,246,528 vehicles sold, an increase of 7.7% over the same period in 2012 (1,157,807). “The BMW Group achieved an all-time high in sales for the month of August. For the very first time, we sold over one million BMW brand vehicles in the first eight months of the year. The company is well on course to attain growth in sales for the full year. Recently we presented new models such as the BMW 4 Series Coupé and the third generation BMW X5, which will provide for additional momentum towards the end of the year”, said Ian Robertson, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG, Sales and Marketing BMW, at the 65th International Motor Show in Frankfurt. The main growth driver was the BMW 3 Series. For more info on the BMW range, contact local dealer Westside BMW on 3363 7522.

Parked nose to tail around the Equator, the 40 million Corolla sedans, hatches and wagons would circle the Earth four times. To drive past all those cars, sitting on 100km/h for 24 hours a day, it would take almost 67 days to complete the journey! Since production began in 1966, one Corolla has been built and sold every 37 seconds on average. Today, the rate is even faster at one car every 27 seconds. It took four years to reach one million Corolla sales, a decade to reach five million sales and 16 years to pass 10 million. The most recent 10 million were produced and sold in just eight years. Today, the Corolla is produced at 15 plants worldwide and last year more than 1.161 million vehicles were sold globally — more than 3,170 every day — in more than 150 countries and regions. Toyota has calculated that at least 26 million Corollas are still operating today — a great tribute to the car’s quality. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the milestone

car was sold in late July, according to global data received from the parent company. “Australia has figured prominently in the global history of Corolla, so it wouldn’t surprise me if the 40-millionth car was actually bought by one of our local customers,” Mr Cramb said. Corolla is Toyota’s best-selling model in Australia and is the most in-demand vehicle in the country so far this year. One out of every five Toyota vehicles ever sold in Australia is a Corolla — a total of 1.24 million — 21.7 per cent of 5.7 million Toyota vehicles sold locally. Australia was the first country to receive Corolla exports when 15 were shipped to Australia in November 1966 — just one month after Corolla was launched in Japan. Corolla was built in Australia from 1968 until 1999 and achieved its first motorsport success in the Bathurst enduro, followed by a string of victories in touring car racing and rallying. The new-generation Corolla sedan is due to be launched in Australia in 2014. For information on this and all things Toyota, contact local dealer Llewellyns on 3282 2922.
