Springfield Lakes photographer wins award Right bin out A black and white cityscape of Las Vegas, as seen at night from high above the Strip, has helped to earn a Springfield Lakes photographer three industry awards when he was in the US city. Local photographer Fred McKie’s photo titled “Vegas Nights” collected silver in the Travel Photography category at the 2015 AIPP Queensland Professional Photography Awards. Incredibly, the photo was taken through a hole in a security fence on an observation deck. “I made this photograph with my lens squeezed through a small hole in the security fence on the observation deck of Vegas’s replica Eiffel Tower. I was there as a tourist like everyone else and had no more right to stand where I was, but I’d been patient waiting for the chance to utilise the hole in the fence and I was adamant I would hold my ground until I’d captured what I wanted,” Fred said. “One of the Eiffel Tower Experience staff even tried to hurry me along, to make way for the next group of sightseers coming up the elevator, but the hole was small and it was fiddly to make the precise focal length and focussing adjustments through the fence to get the shot just right. Once I had the shot, I happily pulled back and let everyone else in.” The exposure time was 3.2 seconds, which required stability – and plenty of perseverance. “I could only get one leg of my tripod firmly stabilised on the floor, with the others strategically poked through the grill of the fence. It was a logistical nightmare, with a high risk of it being bumped as people jostled to get a better view,” McKie said. 2 Ipswich Life

McKie’s own appreciation of the image has grown over time, with its true potential being revealed through a conversion to black and white . In addition to celebrating his recent success, McKie recently had eight of his prints hung Aspire Galley in Paddington as part of the ‘SNAP15’ photography group exhibition, which was Fred’s first gallery exhibition. with new app Ever struggled to remember which bin should go out each week? Thanks to a new free app from Ipswich City Council, hopefully the sight of someone running up the road in their pyjamas towing a wheelie bin will be a things of past. The Bin App set-up by Ipswich Waste Services gives residents information about bin night. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said the free mobile app provided bin night reminders and as it was linked to individual addresses it was able to show exactly what bin needed to be placed on the kerbside on a particular night. “It is all about ensuring that the right waste goes in the right bin on the right day,” he said. There’s also web-based information for those who look it up on their internet browser. The app can be accessed for free at www. ipswich.qld.gov.au/ipswichbinapp The app would also support once-off custom events like the Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Day and could broadcast messages to everyone that has downloaded the app. This broadcast feature will be useful to advise residents of service disruptions and emergency events. The app also has a waste materials module to allow Council to list the appropriate bin for a particular waste item and provide recycling instructions.

WHAT’S NEW IN

BOOKS

Time And Time Again is out now in all good bookstores through Random House

What if you could stop WWI? Imagine if you could go back in time and intervene in a pivotal moment in history. What would you do? Stop Adolf Hitler? Tell the Captain of the Titanic to slow down a bit? Tell JFK to stay at the hotel instead of driving around Dallas? The premise of Ben Elton’s new book ‘Time After Time’ presents you such a quandry. It’s the 1st of June 1914 and Hugh Stanton, ex-soldier and celebrated adventurer is quite literally the loneliest man on earth. Stanton knows that a great and terrible war is coming. A collective suicidal madness that will destroy European civilization and bring misery to millions in the century to come. He knows this because, for him, that century is already history. It begs the question, that if the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand in 1914 hadn’t happened, would World War 1 still have taken place? Elton is best known for his work on TV shows such as ‘Blackadder’, ‘The Young Ones’ and ‘The Thin Blue Line’, and this, his 15th novel is his third one based on historical events, as he adores history and wants to share that love. “History fascinates me, but it doesn’t have to be war,” Elton said when in Queensland recently. “In this novel I’m dealing with revolution, love, betrayal and someone who has the chance to change the world. “I love history and every now and then it becomes part of my work. My recreation is history, and I love to read history. For example ‘Blackadder’ was set through points in history. I’ve no idea how we chose those eras, but they were good choices.

“History is a vibrant thing to me. I’m not trying to analyse the future, I just enjoy it, and my dream ultimately would be to step into the past. Who wouldn’t want to see The Beatles at ‘The Cavern’ or to be a fly on the wall at the Gettysburg address? “I think over the last two years we’ve heard so much about World War 1 as the Centenary approaches, as I’ve read at least three books with ‘1913’ in the title,” Elton said. “It can’t be denied that something in all my work has driven me in a direction. I don’t set out to write something relevant at that time, and you can’t write a decent piece of work based on that. “I can remember a time when a girl would be mortified if she flashed a bit of her bra, but now we have people on Big Brother parading on national tv in their underwear, there’s that whole change in attitudes which is fascinating. I’m part of this change too, we all are. “One of the great frustrations of World War 1 was that the whole of Europe was a tinderbox ready to explode. But just when everything seemed to be okay, it all went off. I think from my research that it could so easily have gone the other way. Capitalism shifted to America, and Britain never recovered from that. Truth is, it didn’t have to happen. “When I first told my wife about this story, she said ‘Oh don’t do time travel because you have to suspend belief so much, its so

annoying’. But I argued that I needed to do it, and I had to do it in a way that was convincing. The plot wouldn’t work without two timelines. “My publisher asked ‘why can’t we just have a Tardis’? No, I needed a convincing and interesting time shift mechanism. I did heaps of research, stuff like ‘Quantum Mechanics for Dummies’, and then I read about Isaac Newton having a nervous breakdown at the peak of his fame. How could this scientific genius just stop working? From learning that, I worked hard at the time travel concepts so it would work, and I think it does. “It was fun to put myself in that time. I get annoyed when I watch costume dramas using modern language. I have a good ear, I’ve read Dickens and Sherlock Holmes, so I like to think I can write dialogue convincingly, but I’d have to make it up if I was doing Elizabethan. All I can say, is that it’s great fun. Whether or not someone from that period would understand it I don’t know, but what we accept is that it’s convincing at our level.” Elton has been writing constantly since the early 1980’s and has written everything from TV comedies, musicals, books and editing other people’s work, yet his writing style remains the same. “My writing method hasn’t changed at all. I get up, go to the computer and do what has to be done until it’s finished, but the distractions have changed. I may watch some morning TV for five minutes then hate myself for the rest of the day. Ben has dedicated ‘Time After Time’ to history teachers the world over, who gave him a love of human endeavours and stories throughout time. “I would love to write a novel about every decade throughout time. But for now I’m so pleased with how this one turned out.”

STAR CHAT Secrets of a Masterchef ‘Food Nerd’ CELEBRITY NEWS

Gary Mehigan takes us inside the new series of ‘Masterchef’, which last year delivered the highest television view ratings for quite some time, and the bar has been raised yet again for the 2015 series.

Masterchef is back for 2015, after last years ‘reboot’ of the popular show favourite show, which is simply about on thing....FOOD! One of the three judges on the show is Gary Mehigan, who has seen the effect the show has had on the nation from the very start, and he’s still having a ball on the show. “We are very lucky I have to say, Matt, George and myself,” Gary said. “I think we’ve made a fabulous show. I don’t think we’ve had delicious food as good as we have this year, even after last year when we did a reboot and went back to the core of what made it good. “I thought I was going to have to rejig my mind, with expectations not too high, but I’ve been blown out of the water so far and it proves how much as a nation we love food.” The show is well into filming, and Gary said that last year’s ‘reboot’ was a good move, taking the show back to its true core. “We’re a good chunk in, and looking forward to launch week. Last year the network and the producers were smart enough to go to the public and ask them what they thought. The three of us have restaurants, we’re doing book tours, food demos, so we’re out and about talking to people and they told us they simply loved the cooking the most. That’s what it was all about for them. “At its core, Masterchef has to be about the honesty of food. It’s good to find out about contestants, their lives at home, and the heart of the show is mentoring them. Regardless

Dial M for Murder play A stylish, psychological thriller will keep audiences on the edge of the seats when it features on the Incinerator Theatre stage in May. Dial M for Murder, which had great success both on stage and on film in the 1950s, is probably best remembered as a film starring the darling of the screen at the time, Grace Kelly, and directed by Alfred Hitchcock. When a former tennis pro (played by Shane Mallory) who has married for money finds out that his wife( Rebecca Noble) has had an affair, his plans for a very comfortable future, together with his resentment and jealousy, causes him to plan his wife’s death. But when this carefully mapped out murder of his wife by a man he has blackmailed to do the job is unsuccessful, he viciously plans further revenge on his wife and almost gets away with it. Dial M for Murder has veteran director Les Chappell at the helm assisted by another wellknown theatre stalwart Desley Cronon, with the rest of the cast David Harrison, Liz Ball and Josh Nixon showcasing their talents to bring this engrossing and entertaining play to life. Bookings for the Public Nights on May 15,16,22,23 and Sunday May 17 can be made online at www.ipswichlittletheatre.com.au or at the Ipswich Visitor Information Centre (3281 0555) Queen Victoria Parade. As with their first play of the year, the hilarious Perfect Wedding, Ipswich Little Theatre is enjoying great audience bookings for this classic crime thriller, Dial M for Murder, and another sold out season is sure to be the result.

of whether they win or not it’s about helping them grow. “People have said that Masterchef changed the landscape, but I’m not so sure. I’ve been here for 24 years since moving from the UK and we’ve always been obsessed with travel, coffee and food. What the show has done is captured a moment in time when Aussies have become confident about food. Once upon a time we’d go to other countries because the food was better, but now we don’t have to do that. That interest in food will always stay in this country I think and Masterchef, plus many other shows will reflect that.” Matt, George and Gary have been with the show since day one, and for all three, the show remains fun. With the exception of Top Gear, it is hard to think of too many shows that has managed to retain all of its stars for so long. “We love it, in all honesty, we simply love it. I said to George at the very start ‘When this stops being fun I will stop doing it’. We are all busy businessmen with so much to do, for example George has seven or eight restaurants, I’ve lost count. In essence we are ‘Foodie Nerds’. It’s nice to be surrounded by people with like minds, that’s a wonderful thing, doing what you love on a daily basis. “We’ve joked about the guys on Top Gear and say they have the best job in the world but now I think we have that honour. There are so many ‘kick myself’ moments, such as finding myself standing next to Heston Blumenthal,

and why I’m here is because I love seeing the development of people. Every day I am excited about going to work, and I love being part of this exclusive Food Club,” Gary said. Gary also revealed a couple of the show’s secrets when it comes to deciding on what criteria to judge a dish, and the fact that after all the cooking, the tasting is done only after the whole kitchen is tidied up. Surely he must be eating cold food? “The turnaround is really quick. We have a whole art department standing by with trolleys and they do a very fast clean up. We watch the cooking as it happens, so when time is up the benches are cleaned very fast. “Often I’m asked ‘do you eat cold food?’, but the truth is that we are constantly tasting, at every stage of the process. I might say to a contestant ‘Do you have too much vinegar in that?’, or ‘Did you season those veggies?’ It’s an interesting process and what I’ve discovered is that even though the food is often cooled down, it doesn’t hide the flavour. It never gets in the way of a good decision. With regards to deciding what dish is best, it comes down to its deliciousness. We ask ourselves ‘What dish would we go back for?’ When we have two dishes that are lineball, we look at each other and ask that question,” Gary said. “It’s not always unanimous, sometimes we don’t agree, but as there’s three of us we can always make a decision. ‘Coal, Castle and Choirs’ by Ken Grubb was produced in association with Willis Haenke Historical Foundation, and after hours of painstaking research tells the story of a suburb with a long mining, immigrant and cultural history. Ken Grubb, an Engineering Geologist even received an Australia Day award for his work on local history. “I started on it about a year ago,” Ken said. “It took me about three months to compile so it didn’t take long to come together. It’s amazing how much information is available. “It’s a very historic village, lots of Welsh people lived there, and there was a ‘Castle’ which many people still talk about. “The place was heavily mined for coal. There’s a reason there aren’t any houses on the hill because there is an underground fire that’s been burning for decades,” Ken explained. “That’s the unique thing about this hill. Fires need oxygen, and tunnels were made to run uphill in the past. They undermined the whole hill, so there is ventilation via the slope which is like a chimney, and so that coal-fuelled fire has been burning since the 1930s. Blackstone is famous for having a big Welsh connection, and Ken managed to work out what that was with some simple research. “Blackstone had a big Welsh community back in the 19th Century, thanks to Lewis

Thomas, who was known as ‘The Coal King’, was born in Talybont in Wales in 1832. He worked in a woollen mill from the age of just 8, and migrated here in 1859. “When he came out he invited all his mates from Wales who moved here, set up the village, and only spoke Welsh. Eventually they had to learn English of course, but the Welsh connection remains in places like the soccer club – the oldest one in Queensland.” One of the most fascinating things about Blackstone was the house known as ‘The Castle’, as Ken explained. “Brynhyfryd (pronounced Brin-Huv-Rid) was a huge stately house constructed as a home for Mr Lewis Thomas and his family in 1890. Were it to exist today, the house would rival the best heritage houses in the nation.” The book is available for just $5 via the Ipswich Historical Society or at www. haenkefoundation.org.au.

The Ipswich Chamber of Commerce has always encouraged the support of local business through the shopipswich brand - and now shoppers can buy locally online at shopipswich.com.au.

The growth and success of local businesses depends on local shoppers to first think local when purchasing goods or services. Now the Ipswich Chamber has made shopping locally much easier, with the launch of the online shopping portal shopipswich. com.au, to enable Chamber members to compete online while keeping it affordable. Businesses having a presence on the internet is not really a choice any more, but has almost become a necessity in today’s market. Businesses without online shopping pathways are missing out on potential customers. Internet marketing is growing every day and some businesses are missing out on the revenue potential of Internet marketing because they resist change or put Internet marketing in the ‘too hard’ basket. The Ipswich Chamber is helping local business by taking business online and making new business just a simple ‘click’ away! There will come a time when businesses without an online presence will lose a lot of business opportunities. For many businesses, that day has already arrived. shopipswich enables businesses to set up mini stores to trade and offer services online. Customers will be able to shop from a range of Ipswich businesses with one easy checkout.

Proprietors can lift the profile of their business by joining this professionally designed website portal and benefit from the well-established brand of shopipswich. Open 24/7, with web-based purchasing, shopping cart and online payment, businesses can be open when people want to shop. Using the internet is an easy way for people to access information about your business, your products and services from the comfort, convenience and privacy of their own home. Ipswich Chamber members can grow their business by potentially reaching hundreds of new customers daily. Businesses can create an online shopfront to upload as many products as they wish to their ‘store’. They can quickly access and update their ‘store’ to match their current range of products and services. Although this is about shopping locally, it is also an opportunity for local business to grow their market reach. Just like a virtual shopping mall, shoppers from all over Australia can log on, view and buy goods and services. This initiative is unlike any other in the Ipswich Chamber’s 108 year history, and they are very excited to see this new opportunity for members come to fruition in May 2015. Roger can not only do Interior and Exterior painting or repaints, but can help painting renovations, extensions, both at your home or office, plus roof and deck restorations. Roger offers FREE quotes on his work, with no money changing hands until the job is done and YOU are happy! “We don’t ask for a deposit when we start, we only put our hand up when you are 100% satisfied with the job, its something that we take great pride in,” Roger said. “The beauty of our service is that we are the one stop shop. We offer a handyman service, carpentry or plumbing skills, so if anything needs fixing before painting we can help with that, and it saves the customer hiring several different people to do the one job. “We are easy to get along with, as we love to help with choosing colours and we realise that we also have to be adaptable,” Roger continued. “Often it takes time to get the right colours, and we want people to be happy in the home they live in. “We will sit down and ask what kind of look they are after, I have lots of pics on my Facebook page showing jobs we’ve done in the past where we have used colours to suit all kids and styles of homes. “I’ve been in this game for 17 years in Ipswich, and I’ve seen lots of different colour schemes that have come out a treat,” Roger said. “We also love doing lots of character work, for example we’ve just finished the Marburg pub, and we loved all the history out there, so the colouring had to reflect that proud history.

“A feature of Ipswich, Heritage style homes are part of our city, and we also do work with the Ipswich Historical Society! “The know-how we have is priceless, anyone can put a brush on a wall but it takes time and experience to get it looking good. You can’t put a price on that. “We go to the nth degree in preparation, we always take things back to the basics before we commence a job so we have complete direction and understanding on the work required, plus with our no deposit policy and satisfaction guarantee, why not give us a call for your next painting job.” Roger’s wife Beck has also taken up painting As well as doing the books in the family business, making it a true ‘family’ business. “I’m a second year apprentice and started out doing all the paperwork, but now I want to learn how to paint too,” Beck said. “Roger says that it’s great because for around eight hours a day he gets to be the boss!” Why not give Roger a call on 0413 601 565 for a free measure and quote. Find RE Painting on Facebook by searching for “RE Painting Services Pty Ltd”. Below: Roger and Beck Eveans know that a good paint job leads to good referrals for other jobs.

EDUCATION Hockey in the Blood

Ipswich’s Layla Eleison knew from a young age that she was always going to be around Hockey, but she never dreamed that at just 16 years of age she would be in an Australia team, off to Europe soon for a four nation’s tournament against very tough competition.

The Australian under 16 Schoolgirls Hockey Team will take on Belgium, Holland and Germany. Layla will visit three countries on a two week tour that is just rewards for her years of hard work, but she’s ready to work even harder to realise her dreams. The grand-daughter of well known Hockey identities the late Herb Eleison, and daughter of Brendan Eleison, plus with younger sister Abby playing at State Representative level, Layla has set her sights on one day making the Olympic Games, and the experience she will get in Europe will go a long way towards achieving that goal. In her final years at St. Mary’s College, Layla can’t wait to get to Europe. “We go to Paris first for a few days before travelling to Manheim in Germany for training and practices matches against local sides. We then take on Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany in a Four Nations Tournament which is also being held in Manheim,” Layla said.

“I’ve played since I was about six years old, basically as long as I can remember. I made my first state team as an under 12, and I knew then I really wanted to make more teams. I worked on my training with Regional Coaching Director Neil Shearer. “The under 13’s Queensland team took me to Alice Springs. Two years later I was then selected in the Qld under 15 team to go to play in Busselton WA, then the next year I made the under 16 Queensland team which took me to Adelaide! “Now I’m in the Australian team. It was announced at the National Titles, which Queensland won, and my name came over the loud speaker,” Layla said. “Five of us from Queensland made the Australian team, and it’s made me realise how hard I’ve worked over my junior years. My goal was to make a higher level team and getting in the Australian squad has just made me work harder.

“It’s going to be very hectic, but I’m really excited. I have a lot of hard work ahead of me, and the next goal will be the Queensland Academy of Sport squad which is very hard to get into, and that is all age groups, not just under 18’s.” Layla’s sporting hero is Kookaburra’s Eddie Ockenden, who has had a similar career so far. “He’s just like me, and he plays the same position. He went through the ranks really fast as a youth. Hockey is just so much fun; I’ve played it as long as I can remember. It’s very high on my list of priorities career-wise. The goal is to make the Olympic squad, perhaps in Tokyo 2020,” Layla said. Watch this space Ipswich. Layla could one day be our newest local hero.

Choosing the right school Without doubt, the best way to start the search for your child is to give some thought to his or her potential to succeed at different things and in different environments. Get a clear picture of your child’s interests, abilities and weak spots. Consider their academic strong points as well as their aptitudes in sport, art and other areas. Ask your child to think about what they like and don’t like about school, their own strengths and needs, and the things they would like to get out of secondary school. A reasonably complete picture of your child makes it easier to know what you are looking for in a school, and to recognise it when you find it. Primary school teachers who know your child may be useful sources of information. The most systematic way to select a school is to compare the options against a checklist of school types and characteristics. If you have a particular need to satisfy (for example, a special educational requirement or a preference for boarding or distance

education), the choice will be limited. Otherwise, start by deciding where you’re prepared to travel to, which sectors are most appropriate, and, if applicable, the religion or ethos you prefer. Then you can add to your checklist by including other characteristics you think would benefit your child (a strong sporting program, a particular language or a new science laboratory, for example). Once you have identified the schools that fit your criteria, you should have a short enough list to go shopping. Visit the schools, especially when they are having an open day or a viewing event, get copies of their publications and talk about them with anyone who knows the school firsthand. In these pages there are schools that are opening their doors to introduce themselves to you and your children, so take advantage of these events….it could be one of the biggest decisions a parent will ever make. Choosing the right school is something that will impact your child for their whole life.

Grammar Plus for busy families Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School (IGGS) has launched a variety of Grammar Plus options for families juggling their children’s multiple curricular and co-curricular commitments with other family and work commitments. Grammar Plus offers study, overnight, casual, temporary and weekly options for girls in Years 5 to 12. Students may stay after school until 9.00pm, overnight, for a few nights or a few weeks, depending on family schedules. This also allows girls to attend sport, drama or music commitments or catch up on work in the library after school, before having a shower and dinner in the school’s boarding house. They can then complete two hours of supervised homework with other girls from their year, before being picked up at 9.00pm. At $40 until 9.00pm, this option is more costeffective than tutoring, let alone the added expense of dinner and any childcare costs for parents held back at work. The Grammar Plus Overnight option has been popular for families who live within a one hour travelling distance from the school, especially when girls are staying back after school for training or rehearsals. Instead of spending an hour on a bus or in the car on these afternoons and then the following morning, students are electing to stay at school one or two nights a week to catch up on study and sleep, while also having the benefit of spending time with other girls from their year level for study or leisure.

Many families who live just over an hour away from Ipswich choose the Grammar Plus Weekly option, with their daughters able to stay on top of their workload during the week, to then enjoy family time at home on weekends. Grammar Plus Casual is very popular with senior students who elect to stay at school for a few nights during exam blocks as the girls enjoy studying together, while also eating and sleeping well. Year 12 Grammar Plus Casual student, Chelsee McQuilty said, “It gets my head in the game for school work and sport and gives me that little bit of a break from being distracted at home.” Grammar Plus Temporary is popular with parents who work on shift rotations or need to travel for work, as it provides the reassurance of knowing their daughters are secure and enjoying the benefits of extra time to catch up on work with friends, while also eating and sleeping well. Year 8 Grammar Plus Temporary student, Tegan Matthews said, “It’s very handy because I get to come in when I need to and it’s a good opportunity when my mum’s busy.” Students are welcome to try Grammar Plus as a Grammar Girl for a Day by calling the IGGS Registrar, Mrs Wendy Levkovich on 07 3454 4401 or emailing enrolment@iggs.qld.edu.au.

The Springfield Anglican College Over the past twelve months, the College has been in the process of developing a Learning Analytics programme that will enable staff, students and parents to view student academic progress as the year unfolds. The College engaged Track One Studio to build the programme to suit the specific needs of the College and, as such, is different to that which many schools use. The programme captures the progress of individual students in each subject area and over time. The programme also provides for cohort data and any external testing undertaken such as NAPLAN and includes a range of data including in relation to student effort and behaviour, learning support needs through to absenteeism. The two greatest benefits of this comprehensive data base is the fact that the data is live, meaning up-to-date to the last assessment entered. This view of where a student may be at is far more valuable than Semester Reports, which quickly become dated in terms of relevance to current levels of progress. The other key benefit is the ability to drill down and identify within each subject individual areas of strength and weakness. Data entered includes students overall grades for each assessment as well as the grades allocated within the overall grade to the criteria used for that assessment. Rather than having conversation about improving

a student’s English grade, the conversation moves to which aspect of English will be most beneficial to focus upon. At the College the programme is being used extensively across both campuses and is proving highly beneficial to the Senior students who have aspire to attend university and require the best OP to gain entrance to their preferred university course. by Thomas Keneally Australia emerged from World War I into a decade of profound change, characterised by a revolution in behaviour amongst the young; by the first great age of consumerism; and by secret right wing armies and the growth of the Communist Party. As in the two previous volumes of Australians, Thomas Keneally brings history to vivid and pulsating life as he traces the lives and the deeds of Australians known and unknown. He follows the famous and the infamous through the Great Crash and the rise of Fascism, and explains how Australia was inexorably drawn into a war that led her forces into combat throughout Asia, Africa, Europe and the Pacific. At home an atmosphere of fear grew with the fall of Singapore and the bombing of Darwin, the Japanese advance and then the arrival of General MacArthur. (Allen&Unwin)

Mums spend a lot of time creating wonderful memories and capturing photos of their beautiful children. When they look back on these memories, often there are very few photos of Mum sharing these precious times. Brassall Shopping Centre is giving families a chance to get Mum out from behind the camera by offering FREE professional photos with Mum this Mothers Day. Shoppers simply have to make a purchase of $20 or more in any store during May and take their receipts to the lounge room photo studio installed in-Centre. The photo studio will be available during selected hours from Saturday 2 to Saturday 9 May, giving shoppers plenty of time to primp and preen before their photo shoot! Centre Manager Jessica Chim said the Centre wanted to recognise the hard work mothers do each day to create memorable moments for their families. “As a Mum, I understand that it is hard to capture the precious moments we share with our children. So, this Mothers Day we want

all the local Mums to be able to take home and display a beautiful photo of themselves and their families, without the expense of a professional photo service.” Ms Chim said. Shoppers who are interested in taking advantage of this great free photographic opportunity can find out more on the Brassall Shopping Centre website – www. brassallshoppingcentre.com.au or can phone the Centre on 07 3201 4255.

FOCUS ON HIGHER

EDUCATION & TRAINING Why tertiary study is the right next step after school You’ve finished school, and you’re considering a career. Or maybe you realise that now is the time to get that defree you’ve always wanted. There are many great reasons to study at university, but let’s start with four: Uni Graduates Find Employment The labour market is competitive and many jobs require tertiary training. Having a university qualification gives you the skills and advantage to secure employment. Over 75% of university undergraduates gain full-time employment within four months of graduating*. Employability Skills A university degree provides you with the specialist knowledge you’ll need for a specific career and also develops key skills, such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, initiative and enterprise, planning and organisation, self-management, learning, and technology—the eight most highly employervalued skills*. With most people changing careers several times throughout their working lives, the skills you’ll gain at university will be valuable in a variety of job and life situations.

Career Satisfaction At school, the subjects we are good at are often those we enjoy the most. The same theory applies to any kind of work you do, whether it be at university or in the workplace. In the right university degree you’ll get to study in an area (or areas) of interest and develop the skills and knowledge you can apply to a satisfying and rewarding career. Great Earning Potential While enjoying your time at work is important, getting paid for your hard work is pretty important too! The average graduate starting salary—that is, what graduates under 25 years get paid in their first job out of uni—is around $49‚000 per year!* So, making the choice to engage in higher education pays off in several ways. *Source: Graduate Destinations 2010

USQ trains next generation of emergency services workers In the not-too-distant future, paramedics on-board local ambulances may have been trained by the University of Southern Queensland (USQ) right here in Ipswich. USQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Jan Thomas said the Bachelor of Paramedicine offered a rewarding, fastpaced career that made a difference in people’s lives. “These students are future employees of critical areas such as ambulance, intensive care paramedicine, emergency and disaster management, flight rescue services and community education,” Professor Thomas said. “They will be equipped with specific skills that are unique to being a paramedic, and will receive training in the areas of assessment, analysis, decision making and working in difficult situations. “They have chosen a challenging and worthwhile career path and USQ is committed to providing them a quality education experience.” The degree includes a number of clinical placements with Queensland Ambulance Service and in other healthcare settings to gain invaluable hands-on experience. Students also have access to training facilities such as simulated ambulance and emergency training labs. Professor Thomas said the University offered a world-class program at USQ Ipswich.

“The Bachelor of Paramedicine was designed by leading medical and paramedic personnel who understand the real-world of prehospital emergency care,” she said. “We have a great program and excellent staff, for example USQ’s new senior paramedic academic, Sam Willis, is co-author of a new Wiley-Blackwell textbook Fundamentals of Paramedic Practice.” Since USQ took ownership of the Ipswich campus in January, the paramedicine degree is offered alongside the discontinued University of Queensland (UQ) paramedic program under a transition arrangement. “I’m pleased with the successful collaboration between USQ and UQ – the feedback has been very positive,” she said. “Our number one priority is to provide students with a great study experience and assist them to become quality paramedics.” To learn more, visit www.usq.edu. au/sayhello and get details on USQ’s Study Options evenings.

First Principles Review to change Defence structure A wide ranging review of the Department of Defence has made 76 recommendations aimed at transforming the whole Defence organisation, to ensure it can deliver on future requirements, to be outlined in the forthcoming Defence White Paper. Defence Minister Kevin Andrews said Defence must move from the current federated approach into a single, integrated organisation that delivers enhanced joint capability. “The shortcomings identified by the Review affect all of Defence and need to be urgently addressed,” the Minister said. “These include a proliferation of structures, processes and systems with unclear accountabilities, which in turn cause institutionalised waste, delayed decisions, flawed execution, duplication, over-escalation of issues for decision and low engagement levels amongst employees in the organisation.” The review team was led by former Rio Tinto managing director David Peever, and its report, titled ‘Creating One Defence’, calls for the Defence Materiel Organisation and the Capability Development Group to be abolished; the functions of the two organisations replaced by a new Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG). Four key recommendations include Defence taking “an end-to-end approach to capability development, with a robust and tailored investment approval process, and a new ‘smart buyer’ arrangement for the acquisition and sustainment of defence capability.”

The review also calls for the development of a Defence Investment Plan in place of the current Defence Capability Plan, which it says “as a management tool is problematic as it focuses on capital equipment only and is seen generally as a ‘shopping list’ of projects requested by the Services. “It is too easy to get a project onto the Defence Capability Plan as the Force Structure Review process is irregular and not appropriately contested.” One major recommendation is that the entire project acquisition budget is allocated to the Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group, to ensure expenditure is in accordance with the project delivery plan.” Not accepted by Government was Defence Science and Technology Organisation becoming part of the CASG at present, but could be considered later as part of the ongoing review process. Minister Andrews said the new CASG would have a “life of project” focus, led by a Deputy Secretary for Acquisition and Sustainment, responsible for smart procurement
of Defence capability and being the delivery agent for the capability managers “There are many handover points through the Defence chain and we don’t have a single capability development and sustainment [process] from the beginning of a project right through to the end of life of a particular acquisition at the present time,” he said. Implementation of the recommendations will take place over a two-year timeframe.

ADF completes mission in Vanuatu Post-disaster recovery operations in Vanuatu in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Pam are now complete. More than 500 Defence personnel were deployed on Operation Pacific Assist 2015 to assist the recovery process across the archipelago. Australian Defence Force personnel played a major part in the immediate relief effort, repairing key infrastructure, restoring basic services and delivering more than 115 tonnes of vital humanitarian assistance and disaster relief support. Access to clean water has been restored, schools, community buildings and medical facilities have been repaired, and remote communities now have access to food and shelter. The initial ADF response included the rapid delivery of Australian aid and emergency personnel using C-17A and C-130J Hercules aircraft. AP-3C Orion maritime patrol aircraft provided reconnaissance support over Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands to provide officials with a clearer picture of the damage caused by the cyclone. Military support was also provided by French, British and New Zealand Defence Forces. HMAS Tobruk, an amphibious operations ship, was later deployed with Army engineers, vehicles and additional aid. On arrival, Tobruk provided the maritime base for much of the ADF’s high-tempo post-disaster recovery operations in the outer islands. Tobruk offloaded tonnes of stores using two LARC-Vs amphibious cargo vehicles, two LCM8 landing craft and an embarked Navy MRH-90

multi-role helicopter. Army engineers from the Townsville-based 3rd Combat Engineer Regiment also made a significant contribution to the citizens of the worst affected southern islands of Tanna and Erromango. On Tanna, engineers undertook tasks including restoring the water supply to the eight major population centres, repairs to four medical centres, four churches and 11 schools. On nearby Erromango, a small group of engineers joined sailors from Tobruk in clearing storm damage from the communities of Dillon’s Bay and Happy Land. They also conducted route clearance tasks, infrastructure repairs and aid delivery. The Australian Army deployed three Black Hawk helicopters onboard C-17 aircraft. The Black Hawk crews worked in partnership with New Zealand Army engineers to deliver stores and aid from the New Zealand multi-role naval vessel HMNZS Canterbury. The RAAF flew more than 260 sorties in support of the mission; C17-A and C130-J aircraft flew aid, stores and personnel for the ADF, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and other responding agencies, while RAAF KA-350 King Air tactical aircraft worked tirelessly to provide inter-island transport. Vanuatu will continue to receive assistance from the Australian Government and international agencies. DEFENCE Ambulance airlift to Vanuatu

C-17s deliver aid to Nepal

Clockwise from top: ADF personnel wait to board a C-17A Globemaster III at No 36 Squadron RAAF Base Amberley. Pallets of Australian Aid are loaded onto C-17 in preparation for delivery to Nepal. Warrant Officer Jamie Auld prepares loads for airlift. LAC Warrick McInerney prepares to load pallets. (Defence)

Two RAAF C-17A aircraft from 36 Squadron based at RAAF Amberley are providing vital airlift support in the wake of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake in Nepal, delivering 15 tonnes of supplies such as tarpaulins, blankets, water purification tablets and health supplies to the devastated region. The C-17s are also being used to evacuate Australian citizens and others from Kathmandu to Bangkok. Provision of airlift support requires considerable coordination as access to Kathmandu is congested due to there being only nine parking spaces for aircraft. The evacuation and recovery task is significant, with more than 1000 Australians seeking evacuation assistance from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. As the extent of the tragedy unfolds, with estimates of 5000 people dead and about

8000 injured, the logistics task is huge. Australian Defence Force chief of joint operations, Vice Admiral David Johnston, said that about 25 Australian Defence Force personnel would remain in Nepal to support the C-17s, with teams providing medical support and security.

The Queensland Ambulance Service and the RAAF have joined forces to provide an ambulance to ProMedical, a charitable Vanuatu-based non-government organisation that provides a 24-hour intensive care paramedic ambulance service. A C-17A aircraft flew the donated ambulance from RAAF Base Amberley to Port Vila as part of a joint effort between Defence and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade. The need for paramedical support has increased markedly in the wake of Cyclone Pam. The new ambulance will be ProMedical’s primary response vehicle Acting Australian High Commissioner Simon Flores and ProMedical Manager Michael Benjamin were at Bauerfield Airport in Port Vila for the arrival of the ambulance on board the C-17. The Australian Government is a long-term supporter of ProMedical, funding volunteers in Port Vila and Luganville through the Australian Volunteers for International Development Program. Assistance is also provided through the High Commission’s Direct Aid Program. Above: Air Movements personnel at RAAF Amberley secure an ambulance on a C-17 bound for Vanuatu.

Brady Bunch stars Susan Olsen, Christopher Knight and Mike Lookinland are on their way down under. The trio, who played Cindy (Olsen), Peter (Knight) and Bobby (Lookinland), will appear at the Supanova Pop Culture conventions in Sydney and Perth in June. The expos are usually reserved for stars of cult TV shows and movies, such as Harry Potter, The Walking Dead, Game of Thrones and Merlin. However, the three child actors from the successful Brady Bunch TV series (1969-74) will be joining the expo. Their inclusion comes directly after their big TV sister Mauren McCormick, who played Marcia Brady, was a hit on the Network Ten reality show I’m A Celebrity...Get me Out Of Here! Among some of the other big names confirmed to appear at Supanova in Sydney (June 19-21) and Perth (June 27-28) are Gotham’s Catwoman Camren Bicondova, Elizabeth Henstridge (right) who plays Agent Jemma Simmons in Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Arrow’s Willa Holland who stars as Thea Queen.

Renee gives us her Favourite Movies Renee DiBiase, the new manager at LIMELIGHT CINEMAS, shared with Ipswich Life her favourite all time movies. Renee has returned to Aussie shores after a five year stint in the UK where she managed to survive more cold winters than she cares to remember. Renee loves movies and is excited about her new job here in The Swich, so make sure you say ‘G’day’ when you next go to Limelight Cinemas. Originally from Geelong, and a mad Collingwood supporter *face palm*, Renee is always keen to hear your feedback about what movies YOU want to see on the big screen in Ipswich! 1. Fast & Furious series Love them all, it’s such a great franchise. I absolutely love Paul Walker...I’m a massive fan. Yes, I did cry when I watched Fast & Furious 7… and most of the next day! *sniff* 2. The Wedding Singer I love anything Adam Sandler, simply adore everything he does, and he has such a great ethos. Love his movies and way he works. How can you not like a movie that has Adam Sandler saying “Julia Goolia”?

3. Titanic Fascinated with the story of the Titanic, so when the movie came out in 1997 I loved what James Cameron did with the recreation of the events of that fateful night. I have watched it dozens of times since. 4. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgandy I adore Judd Apatow’s writing and Will Ferrall is a crack up. He’s a great comic, so versatile and anything I watch with him in, it makes me cheer up straight away. 5. Love Actually It made me travel, especially to England. Oh I adore that movie.

Guinness World Records has confirmed that Fast & Furious 7 has set a new record for the fastest time for a movie to gross $1 billion at the global box office. So Fast was Fast to rake in the bucks? You bet! Starring Vin Diesel and the late Paul Walker, the latest film in the Fast and Furious franchise took a mere 17 days to break the $1 billion barrier, quickly surpassing previous record holder Avatar who reached the mark in 19 days. Furious 7 has earned an estimated $735.2 million overseas in 17 days and an estimated $273.7 million in North America in 15 days. The movie was released on April 1, 2015 with its North American premiere on April 3, 2015. Meanwhile Fast & Furious 8 is a GO, thanks to the massive response from fans to the latest instalment. Vin Diesel has been confirmed as saying that the 7th movie was always planned to be the start of a new trilogy of Fast & Furious movies, with the action to eventually end up in New York, and Kurt Russell to return to the series replacing Paul Walker. The tragic death of Walker left many wondering if the series could continue, but with Furious 7 setting records worldwide, it seems this series will around for a while yet!

The most watched show on SBS every year, this year’s event in Austria will be a year of firsts, with Aussies able to vote for the first time, plus it will be screen LIVE for the first time, but you’ll need to get up (or stay up all night) for the 5am start. Guy Sebastion will be waving the Aussie flag with his song ‘Tonight Again’. If you still think Eurovision is a bit of a fad, think again. Last year’s show garnered over 180 million viewers in Europe alone, and this year figures should go even higher. Sebastian is in with a crack though, with European bookmakers having him at 3rd favourite behind Sweden and Italy. Will the Europeans love us enough to give us their votes? We’ll find out on May 24th. Can’t wait! *Jeff Daniels is in final talks for a role on the upcoming films Allegiant Part 1and Part 2 in the Divergent series, starring Shailene Woodley and Theo James. The 60-year-old actor would take on the role of “David, the leader of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare. The agency is behind the creation of the societies that Tris was living in and the reason behind their creation is slowly revealed (mainly in Part 2) to be nefarious.” If you weren’t aware, Allegiant Part 1will start shooting in May this year.

Talking Beer WITH TIM AT THE PA HOTEL

MON DAY

TUES DAY

Boom times for Craft Beer The craft beer scene is Brisbane is growing at an exponential rate, which is great to see as it has been somewhat lagging behind the likes of Melbourne and Sydney. Over a dozen craft breweries have sprung up over the last two years much to the delight of flavoursome beer chasing public. One of the big movers and shakers is Fortitude Brewing Co who brew their wares out of Mt Tamborine. Fortitude Original Golden Ale is their flagship beer and I’m here today to tell you why you NEED to try this beer. Packed with flavour, it is very easy to see why the guys describe this flagship brew as a beer that you can sit on for as long as you like. Just one would work. You know….a ‘quickie’ after a busy day on site or at the office? However, because of the amazing depth, this Golden Ale is equally fitting as a beer that would last the duration of a session. Now, I’m not promoting binge drinking or anything like that, what I’m saying is that

there is a complexity to this beer if you look for it which will make you want more. I taste something different in almost every sip. The sessionability is partly due to the respectable alcohol content of 4.4% but the Amarillo, Mosaic and Waimea hops are playing a huge part here too. They drive a smooth dryness to a crisp finish of a very intriguing beer that also gives a subtle nuttiness whilst providing gentle citrus waves. Quite simply my palate kept asking my legs when they were planning on going back to the bar for more. That is a good sign. As if this beer doesn’t need any more praise it also got judged the 11th best beer in Australia in the latest Local Taphouse Hottest 100 Countdown. Fortitude Original Golden Ale is available on tap right now at Char’d Steakhouse at the Prince Alfred Hotel at Booval. So why not try it today? Cheers, Tim Ipswich Life 27

TWENTY QUESTIONS

Keep the dream alive BY MARK BOURIS The Reserve Bank announcement to keep rates on hold recently means house prices in Sydney and Melbourne are likely to keep growing, even if the growth isn’t as steep as last year’s. This is good for home owners with mortgages — not so great for first home buyers. There’s been a lot of negativity lately about first home buyers getting into the market. However, if you’re a first-home buyer, I suggest you focus on the parts of property-ownership that you can control. You can’t control the Reserve Bank or the momentum of the property market. But you can control your deposit, your mortgage and finding a property in your price range. First-home buyers must be practical when entering the market with only their deposit and not the advantage of using equity in their current home. You could also have a chat with a mortgage broker. Expert advice is always helpful in these matters. Currently in the mortgage market the lowest rates are only about 1 per cent less than the middle of the pack. On a $400,000 home loan over 25 years, the difference between a mortgage at 5.5 per cent and 4.5 per cent is around $230 per month. This is a simple way to improve affordability. One of the biggest mistakes first home buyers can make it to feel pressured to ‘keep up with the Joneses’ and only buy in a prestigious suburb. But just because your ideal suburb is beyond your resources, you needn’t give up on the property market. But where do you buy? The Sydney property market rose 3 per cent in March, and almost 14 per cent over the year. The median Sydney price is now $690,000; the Melbourne property market rose 5.6 per cent over the year to March and its median price is $518,000.

BRAIN TEASERS

Let’s put these figures in perspective: it takes many hundreds of property sales to come up with the averages and there are many lowprice sales to even-out the high ones. Some suburbs in Sydney and Melbourne are not booming. In Sydney there are properties at half the median price in outer areas such as Blacktown, Campelltown and Wyong. And while Sydney and Melbourne surge, Brisbane, Adelaide and Canberra recorded modest gains in the year to March and Perth, Hobart and Darwin went backwards. Many first home buyers are pragmatic about this market: they purchase a property where they can afford it. They either move there, or they rent it out and live in their suburb of choice. In the latest home ownership figures, almost 10 per cent of property purchases were by ‘first-home buyers’ who are not owneroccupiers. They act according to their means and once in the property market, their options increase. So, this is not a time to give up on owning property. Be clear about your finances and talk to an expert about your options. And then do what you can rather than worrying about what you can’t. BEHIND THE

WHEEL Introducing ‘The Chief Dark Horse’ Indian Motorcycle, America’s first motorcycle company, has announced the newest and edgiest member of the Indian Chief line-up — the Indian Chief Dark Horse. The Indian Chief Dark Horse is a cruiser built upon the successful and award-winning Indian Chief platform. Unlike other bikes in the Indian Motorcycle line-up, it is understated with only a flash of chrome and adds a healthy dose of matt black paint to create one of the most confident silhouettes on the market. By all but eliminating chrome from the motorcycle and swapping to cast wheels, the Dark Horse conveys an aggressive pose, and being the lightest in the series, is the quickest model in the Chief family. The Indian Chief Dark Horse delivers the style, quality and power expected from an Indian Motorcycle, and starts at $26,995 ride away. The Dark Horse conveys a bold attitude that demands attention for all the right reasons. Blacked-out from end to end, the Dark Horse is powered by the highly rated Thunder Stroke 111 engine and wrapped in the same chassis and suspension of the Indian Chief Classic. The

Mazda2 sedan confirmed Mazda has confirmed that a head-turning sedan will be added to the All-New Mazda2 range later this year. Dark Horse also continues the high level of standard specification including ABS brakes, keyless ignition and electronic cruise control. Built to be an aggressive solo ride, the Dark Horse has been stripped down, doing away with the analogue fuel gauge and auxiliary driving lights of Chief Classic. A passenger seat plus either passenger foot-pegs or floorboards are available as part of the Genuine Indian Motorcycle Accessory line-up for those who want to ride two-up. The Indian Chief Dark Horse is an ideal motorcycle for those seeking to customize their rides. With host of unique Dark Horse accessories, riders can add components to black-out their ride even more. Items such as ape hanger handlebars, high flow air cleaners, fender struts, slip-on exhaust with black heat shields and exhaust tips, and black fender trim help create the complete blacked-out look. The Indian Chief Dark Horse will be available in Australian Indian Motorcycle dealers from this month. For more information, log on to www. IndianMotorcycle.com.au

Returning for the first time since 2010, Mazda2 sedan - like the Mazda6 and Mazda3 sedans before it – incorporates the elegant styling of Mazda’s award-winning ‘KODO – Soul of Motion’ design language. Like its hatchback sibling, Mazda2 sedan will be available with two transmission types, the 6-speed SKYACTIV-Drive automatic and 6-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual, and with two 1.5 litre petrol engine choices. The standard SKYACTIV-G petrol engine delivers 79kW of power and 139Nm of torque, while the more powerful high-spec alternative puts out 81kW of power at 6,000rpm and maximum torque of 141Nm at 4,000rpm. It offers fuel economy figures from as little as 4.9L/100km and Smart City Brake Support will

be available as an option across the range. The sedan joins All-New Mazda2 hatch which has sold 6,128 cars since arriving last November. With more than 4,000 sales in the first quarter of 2015, it is the nation’s most popular* light car. Mazda Australia’s managing director, Martin Benders said: “When we first saw the design for the Mazda2 sedan we decided it was a must-have car. Often B-segment sedans can lack style and design flow, but we believe the Mazda2 sedan is the best looking of its type in its segment. Having a stylish sedan on sale alongside a sporty hatch provides even more choice to light car buyers.” *To the end of March according to VFACTS figures
