record shop in her teenage days in Toowoomba. The demand for vinyl has skyrocketed in recent years, proving the format isn’t dead. “I think we were all told that CD’s were the way to go and we just accepted it. They were cheaper to make and we were lied to about how indestructible they were plus the sound quality of digital,” Kellie said. “Records never went away, they just stopped making them. It’s been 20 years or so since vinyl was mass produced, but Indie labels have always put out vinyl. It became a collectible item. Kids today want to experience that nostalgia, along with those like me who never stopped buying records. Seeing these Screamfeeder albums on vinyl is so good. “When I was a teenager I was working in a record store in Toowoomba, just a little second hand store. The guy who owned it was such a huge fan of music and I learnt so much about music, and especially Australian music. I loved The Saints, Sonic Youth and The Cult. I remember watching ‘Rock Arena’ late at night and my mouth would drop…it was amazing. “You had to find music then, it wasn’t just

With the latest of their albums being re-released on vinyl, Screamfeeder are celebrating by reuniting for a new tour, even though technically the band never broke up according to bass guitarist Kellie Lloyd who has found success with Screamfeeder and as a solo artist. “Technically Screamfeeder never broke up,” Kellie told Ipswich Life. “Our drummer moved overseas for a while and he then moved back. Every year Screamfeeder would be asked to do a show, a support gig or a festival. Tim (lead singer Tim Steward) and I were doing duet shows and writing together, plus we signed with a label and they talked about releasing our back catalogue on vinyl. Fast forward and we are about to put out our fifth album on vinyl, we’ve got three more left to go, and we’re writing a new album together. There’s a new single in a couple of weeks… so it all came together, people responded and we’ve got a new lease of life for Screamfeeder.” Kellie is excited about the re-issues on vinyl, as she still collects records, and worked in a

there in front of you like it is now with a quick search online. I used to go to record fairs, and get mix tapes from friends. It was a different way of doing things but that’s what you had to do to find new music.” Screamfeeder kick off their national tour in Ipswich on November 13 at Studio 188. “We haven’t played in Ipswich for a very long time. We all live around Brisbane, and we’re looking forward to starting the tour there” Kellie said. “It’s great playing on stage. I tend to get a bit nervous, and think ‘what am I gonna wear’ for example, but when you get up there on stage none of that really matters. You just get lost in the moment…it sounds like a giant cliché but its true, everything stops. There’s nothing like the energy and the satisfaction of playing live, even after all these years. For me its always different, and also exciting knowing that I’ve created something. You can’t steal or recreate the live experience, I can’t live without it,” Kellie added. Screamfeeder play at Studio 188 Friday November 13 as part of the ‘Rocks on the Soul’ tour. Tickets are $10 online or $14 at the door. Visit studio188.com.au for more info.

Like father, like daughter There aren’t too many blokes who at age 42 would change their careers, but that’s just what Ross Muller decided to do. Seven years later and working as a paramedic, Ross’s daughter Annabelle is following in his footsteps. Now a third year student at Australian Catholic University studying a dual paramedicine and nursing degree, Annabelle has completed a three week student placement at the Ipswich Ambulance Station. Now the father/daughter team are sharing their experiences, including at a recent ‘student health inspiration day’ hosted by Health Pathways Alliance (an initiative of West Moreton Hospital and Health Service), which encourages students to consider a career in the healthcare industry. “When I was in my 20’s I wanted to be a paramedic but back in those days you left school in year 10,” Ross said. “I went to the local station and at that time I was newly married, had a baby on the way, and they told me I had to do my senior certificate. I was earning money and I thought ‘nah’ - with a baby coming. “Then at age 42, after working for 17 years at the meatworks in Churchill and running my own mowing business, I decided I decided to give it another go.

“I used to mow the Boonah Ambulance Station’s grass, and I got to know the staff there. I initially thought that I wasn’t smart enough to do it, but I did and by age 43 I was working on the frontline. “It can be the best and worst job in the world. You never know what you’re going to get, it’s never boring and you get to help people every day. . “You do see a different side of the world. You meet people at their lowest point, at their worst and often in situations that are out of control. . “I encouraged Annabelle to do her nursing degree, and told her it’s a high pressure job. But she was always so keen, she has a real passion for the job.” Annabelle knew from an early age that she wanted to work in medicine, and her dad was a source of inspiration. “I wanted to do something in the medical field. I thought it was coolest thing ever when he changed his life and became a paramedic. I was in year eight at the time,” Annabelle said. “I look at him and think it’s amazing he did it with three daughters. I think it would be good if we were partnered up one day, I’m sure we’d work well as a team!

legal eagles On the move McNamara & Associates will take up residence at the heritagelisted 88 Limestone Street (the old TAFE building) next year, - leaving the iconic ‘Pizza Hut’ building in North Ipswich. Building owners James and Tracey Long have been kept busy restoring the property in an $11m project that began in 2013 when they acquired the building from the State Government. Managing Partner Peter Wilkinson said that he is excited about moving from one iconic building to another. “We are spread over two offices in Ipswich, we need more room and what an iconic building to come to, with such a record of educating the city,” Peter said. “It’s a great location with parking, access to the courts, plus it’s purpose-built for a legal business. We’re not sure what to do withthe ‘Pizza Hut’ building at the moment. Maybe we should call Pizza Hut and see if they want it back? “We are looking to increase staff by about 25 per cent once we make the move. We have two offices moving in here, and we’ve been bulging at the seams for too long. “Being an Ipswich business is huge for us. I’ve been there since 1995 and many of us have come through the ranks. We have a big connection with Ipswich and have been around in one form or another for around a hundred years. It’s always been Ipswich based, and this will continue in the new building, it’s a great synergy. There’s many reasons why we love being in business in Ipswich, with such a great community of business people.” James Long said it’s fitting that one of the city’s longest-serving legal firms will have its headquarters in one of Ipswich’s most historic buildings. “We value the history of our city and have an extreme respect for heritage listed buildings,” he said. “These buildings hold a lot of Ipswich’s past, and we’re thrilled to have a tenant that has equally strong, indelible ties to this community and the region.”

The building first opened in 1901 and operated as a TAFE college until 2006, when the education provider moved and the building was left vacant. “We had always liked the look of the building and always thought it would be so nice to work in the buildings,” said Mr Long, the principal of construction company CPM Group. “We knew we could never replicate this kind of building and it was a chance to buy a bit of history.” The Longs bought the building without a firm idea of what they would do with it. What they did know was that a heritagelisted building on a 4092square metre site in the heart of the Ipswich CBD made good commercial sense. “We’re very proud of our history of providing quality legal help to the people of Ipswich for more than 80 years,” said Mr Wilkinson. Mr Long said the renovation has been like stepping back in time – a living time capsule into Ipswich’s heritage. “We found graffiti from just prior to World War II,” he said. “We found someone from the public works department had signed the rafters in 1938. We put a photo on Facebook and someone contacted us to say that was their Great Uncle Jimmy. A lot of tradespeople have made contact to say they did their apprenticeships here in these buildings. “The building lasted 100 years to 2006 when TAFE moved out. We discovered there had been a hole in the roof that had caused water damage and attracted termites. “Stage one is done, and honestly, you ain’t seen nothing yet” Mr Long said.

Call goes out for volunteers The call has gone out for people to help reenact the contribution to World War I made by the people of Laidley. The organisers of the ‘Call to Arms Reenactment’ taking place in Laidley on November 29, are calling for community members to get involved in this special commemoration event. The event will re-enact Laidley’s contribution to the 1915 ‘March of the Dungarees’, and event organisers The Laidley Historical Society, are seeking community volunteers. The Laidley Historical Society’s John Barwell said this could be a once in a lifetime opportunity to be part of a special event commemorating Anzacs that were recruited directly from our community one hundred years ago. “The March of the Dungarees was a very significant time in our history with 14 men specifically from Laidley recruited for the First World War,” he said. “We’re looking for 20-30 people to dress in basic costume uniforms of the era and act as a civilian turned recruit. We also need the help of seamstresses to sew these basic costumes,” said Mr Barwell. Volunteers will play a small role in the march on the day, and detailed instructions will be provided prior to the event. “Your donation of time in the Re-enactment is minimal, but the memories you’ll create and the sense of pride you will feel in commemorating the March of the Dungarees will make it all

worthwhile,” said Mr Barwell. Interested community members can contact Ann Kirby via email at thevalleyweekender@bigpond.com or phone 07 5465 2503 to register or for more information. CBD transformation – Mayor’s vision of Ipswich’s future “Economic development and the resurrection of the city centre is what it’s all about, and when it’s done it’s there forever. I want to finish the CBD. If I can finish it then no one can stop Ipswich.” - Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale. Overcoming the current CBD malaise by bringing the redevelopment project to fruition is just one part of the critical path to a prosperous and socially progressive city of the future, says Cr Pisasale. “I’m passionate about economic development that brings prosperity and quality of life to the people of our great city. CBDs have to be alive, with attractions and entertainment. “Every CBD around the country is suffering, from competition from regional shopping centres; it’s the same problem, different address, but the difference is that we are doing something about it. Just filling vacant shops was not the answer, we needed a total redevelopment from the ground up to create a CBD of the future.” PROJECT OUTCOMES A major part of the redevelopment project will be moving the whole administration of Council and the Library into the new CBD. There are discussions taking place with other government agencies about redeveloping this site and other opportunities to develop inner city living. Cr Pisasale said. “We are moving the Council to where the people are, and the Library will be the best digital interface library in the country. “So, you can see that the whole jigsaw is coming together, and I thank the true believers out there for their patience while we get this done.” A major reason the Cr Pisasale decided to put himself forward to serve another term as Mayor is so he can finish what has been started. “I’ve taken the community down this path and I’ve got the experience to finish it. One of the things stakeholders say to me is ‘are you going to be around’ because a change of mayor is a risk to investors half-way through such a major project at this.” While the CBD redevelopment takes centre stage, in terms of strategic direction for the city, Mayor Pisasale takes an holistic view to future pathways. “The most important thing that people need to realise is that we are a city of centres,” he said. “We need to ensure that our centres of development – Ripley, Yamanto, Springfield, Goodna, Brassall, Rosewood and Ipswich Central – are all given the firepower they need to keep going, with increased residential development and the local job generators. The magnitude of the CBD redevelopment task is not well understood, and the Mayor is highly critical of the way that the Kern

Corporation built essentially a regional shopping centre in the heart of a major city (Ipswich). In 1987, Kern Corporation started a $120 million inner-city development of four city blocks for the city’s population of 75,000 at that time, but Ipswich’s population is now 190,000, and the current closed-in CBD layout is just not working. RIVERLINK AND SPRINGFIELD – FRIENDS OR FOE? Riverlink is often accused as a precursor to the CBD’s demise as a commercial centre, but the shopping centre was always going to happen so the important thing was to connect it with the CBD. “The first step for Council was to secure Riverlink adjacent to the CBD,” Cr Pisasale said. “If Riverlink had been built, say, at Yamanto, Brassall or somewhere else it would have had a disastrous effect on the city. “Part of the conditions to build Riverlink was to build the Bradfield Bridge, buy Railways property on the CBD side of the river, and to enhance the riverbank areas. In future years there will be residential developments near Riverlink, that will give that inner-city living option, and people will be able to ride from Brassall right into town via bikeways.” The successful venture partner for the CBD

redevelopment will be announced by the end of December, and Cr Pisasale is very happy with the one chosen as he preferred partner. “We had proposals from three excellent prospective partners, and we are now negotiating the final contractual details with the successful organisation.” The rapid development of Springfield is seen as the ideal planned community approach but there has been criticism that Council has spent a lot of money in Springfield at the expense of other areas of Ipswich. Cr Pisasale says this view is unfounded. “Unlike the old days council does not pay for streets, services and parks in new residential developments. These are costs met by developers and ultimately included in the cost of land sold. “The more development in Springfield the more is the payoff for Ipswich through developers paying for land development and rates from new residents.” DIGITAL IPSWICH Council is committed to what is being called “Digital Ipswich” through a number of projects, which include extending NBN-level broadband and establishing a Digital Hub and Start-up Incubator at the former Ipswich Fire Station. It will be known as Fire Station 101.

“One thing we are doing is working with a partner to lay about 36 kilometres of optical fibre out to Ripley and then on to the Polaris Data Centre at Springfield” Cr Pisasale said. “We aren’t waiting for the NBN, we are looking at ways to invest in fibre as a commercial enterprise; you can’t have a city that’s not connected at NBN-level. You show me a city that’s laying its own fibre, and buying its own Fire Station to create its own Digital Hub, with Fire Station101. Ipswich is doing it.” Ipswich has a proud history, with mining and Queensland Railways but things change. “Ipswich remembers its past, we have to do that, but years ago we had 200 coal mines in the area that reduced to nothing and we lost most of the QR work, and a major fire in the CBD that destroyed Reids department store just broke everybody’s heart. But we needed to move on, with technology, industry, focused on economic development, and we’re doing that.” INDUSTRY & INFRASTRUCTURE Industry now in Ipswich or coming soon is seen as a big generator of jobs, with industrial parks in the Ipswich region now numbering 14. “We created 3000 jobs last year through a combination of economic and industry development, and that’s massive, no other city in Australia has ever done that,” the Mayor said. Congestion in the city will become a problem that needs a long term solution with the release of IGO as a transport solution for the future, and the Mayor says that the proposed Norman Street Bridge connecting North Ipswich across the river to East Ipswich is an important project, to take the load off the David Trumpy Bridge in the city centre. “In a way it’s good news because we are growing; before there was virtually no one on the bridge, so it’s a good problem to have to solve. We’ve put a lot of work into the Norman Street Bridge, and it’s crucial to the city going forward. “The city also needs a convention centre and an arts centre, as we’ve outgrown our current centres – as good as they are for the city.” FUTURE FOCUS Mayor Pisasale is showing no signs of slowing down, and is the best known mayor in Australia plus the best known Australian mayor internationally. He has an absolute passion for Ipswich, and if the past five years are anything to go by the next five years should be pretty exciting.

Five THINGS I AM GRATEFUL FOR

Records tumble at Tap’d When the owners of the Prince Alfred (P.A.) Hotel in Booval put plans in motion for a new bar dedicated to a range of craft beers and ciders, it turned out in the end to be an Australian record, and shows that Ipswich residents love to try something different.

You may have seen people online taking part in the ‘100 Days’ Challenge where they have to list 100 things over 100 days they are grateful for. Over a hundred might take up a full page, so we asked our Facebook fans what five things they were most grateful for. Casssandra from Brassall responded and we loved her answers. Congrats Cassandra, a double movie pass is on its way to you.

1. My Children

They show me the magic in life!

2. My Partner (Adam)

Because he helps me keep my sanity when my beautiful children turn into terrors, haha.

3. Books The new Tap’d bar at the PA Hotel has a total of 72 beers and ciders on tap, which is more than any other location in Australia, and Operations Manager Tim Rule knew that the pub was onto something special but didn’t realise they’d be breaking records. “We saw the success of selling craft beer, and we knew it was a growing market,” Tim said. “The original plan was to do 26 beers, but the pub’s owner went to San Diego to look at some venues and saw a place with 130 beers on tap, then another with 260 beers on tap! When he came back he said ’26 ain’t gonna cut it’, so we upped it to 72! “The interest in these beers has come from what was initially a decline in beer sales a few years back. People decided to go for quality over quantity, and they wanted more bang for their buck. Just like the explosion in café’s and coffee, the younger crowds prefer something a bit different, and that 18-30 year old market has pushed the demand for craft beers.” For those who don’t know much about craft beers, Tim explains. “Craft beer is a very broad subject. It includes beers from the popular ones like XXXX to big

bold stouts and IPA’s (which stands for India Pale Ale and has a higher hop content which increases the fruity character and bitterness). “It’s easy to make the transition to craft beers, as we try to cater to all markets. Yes they can get a glass of Gold, but we have a range of gateway or ‘transition’ beers on tap so people can start to explore the range available to them.” Approximately $1.5 million was spent on the renovation and creation of Tap’d and Tim admits they didn’t do any big investigations into who has the most beers and ciders on tap, but only discovered the record after construction was under way, and possibly is the most amount of beers on tap in the Southern Hemisphere. “My advice to the average person who wants to explore beers? I’d recommend something like the ‘1842 Lavoob’ original lager…its our own beer, as the PA hotel was built in that year, and what happens when you spell ‘Lavoob’ backwards? “Clean, crisp, and easy drinking. It’s a perfect beer to start your steps into craft beers. “Personally I’m a man of many tastes, I’m a big fan of hops. The more the better. There are

many unusual beers on tap, like Coffee-infused oatmeal stout, Chilli-Lamington ale, ChocHazelnut dark ale, Hard Lemonade and ChocCherry Beer Cocktail as well!” Tim said. “It know it sounds odd, these flavours in a beer, but many of these aren’t a dominant flavour. For instance with the lamington beer, you get a Choc-Vanilla infused taste, but then after you’ve swallowed it you get the chilli kicking in. Or the Cherry Sour beer is like drinking a Sour Warhead. It’s quite different. These types of beers have been increasing in popularity for several years now. “We had a Mango beer on opening, and it was our fastest moving product, and such a perfect beer for summer. That’s coming back, and we’re looking at a Watermelon wheat beer, a Pineapple cider from New Zealand and even a Lychee beer!” Tim said. “We’re always looking for these unusual items that are perfect for an Ipswich summer and I love to see new flavours, its very exciting. The first reaction from customers is they are blown away with the range, but they all love it. Every time you come here you can try something different!”

A Poke In The Eye With a Sharp Stick

If you wanted to raise money you stood on street corner with a tin and a smile. That is until John Cleese rounded up a few friends in 1976 for Amnesty International’s first fundraising show, ‘A Poke In The Eye (With A Sharp Stick)’. Since then, Amnesty has produced a dozen Secret Policeman shows, which culminated with a breath-taking line-up at New York’s Radio City Hall. This book brings together the greatest acts from the twelve shows: scripts of the Dead Parrot Sketch; lyrics to Michael Palin’s ‘I’m a Lumberjack’; Rowan Atkinson’s schoolmaster’s roll-call and on through to the latest generation led by Eddie Izzard, Dylan Moran, Frank Skinner & Russell Brand. Christmas services

What better way to get into the Christmas spirit than making a donation or performing a good deed, with no expectation in return. There are plenty of ways to help with many charities running Christmas appeals. To find a charity you would like to help visit australiancharityguide.com

Santa Claus is coming to town so do not let the kids miss out on the opportunity to see him arrive. The celebrations will kick off from 6.45pm on November 20 with A Star is Born talent show followed by the twilight parade, the turning on of the Christmas lights and a children’s Christmas show. Visit ipswichcentral.com.au/

There’s nothing more festive than joining in with the community to sing traditional Christmas Carols. The Mayor’s Carols by Candlelight will be held this year on December 5 at the North Ipswich Reserve. The event will be a fantastic evening out for residents with free rides, entertainment including guest star Wendy Matthews as well as fireworks that will conclude the night. The gates open at 5pm and more information is available on council’s website at ipswich.qld.gov.au

Many Ipswich residents enjoy getting into the spirit of Christmas with Christmas light displays. The Ipswich Sparkles Christmas Lights competition is a popular event and from December 15 to 17 residents can book for a guided coach tour of a selection of the best displays from the competition. Drive around town and discover some of the best displays or book a tour online at discoveripswich.com.au And alien franchise Men in Black is headed for a reboot – minus one thing... Will Smith. Producers said in an interview: “We’re in the middle of it, it’s very active. It will be reinvented as a trilogy.” There is a popular rumour floating around Hollywood though that the reboot may involve a 21 Jump Street crossover with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum. And now that the officers graduated from University in their last film – it may not be all that far fetched an idea... See you next time! Louise

It is important to remember the true spirit of Christmas and what it is all about, celebrating the birth of Christ. Taking part in a Christmas Eve or Christmas Day service is a spiritual time to celebrate and give thanks. The Defence Department estimates the internal revenue of the Afghan government at about $2 billion per annum and the cost of maintaining its military forces at $4 billion a year, which means that continuing international financial support is critical to the government’s ability to maintain security against the Taliban. “This is the first year the Afghan National Defence & Security Forces have been doing this on their own, and they are not frightened to step up to the mark but some of the enablers aren’t there at the moment and that’s why we need to continue to invest in our support for them,” the CDF told a Senate Estimates hearing recently. “When you look around the major populations centres they are relatively secure but some of the cities in the outer areas are of concern.” The CDF said that the United States commitment to retain 9,800 military personnel in the country until end2016, reducing to 5,500 after that, aims to give the ANDSF time to grow in their capabilities to maintain security

by building up intelligence, logistics and air support structures. “It’s also why the international community shouldn’t cut and run with finance to support Afghanistan either, that is important,” he said. “And it’s one of the major lessons I think that we took out of what happened with the Soviets when they pulled out after their 10-year period.” The CDF said Defence had not changed its assessment that the Iraq mission would probably last three to five years. Arthur Foote’s home 100 Chermside Road, East Ipswich early 1900s The historical plaque placed by Ipswich City Council in front of home reads: ‘This house was built by Arthur Foote who founded Foote’s joinery business in Ipswich in 1895. The exact date of construction is not known but it appears it was built in the late 1890s or early 1900s. The house reflects the joinery skills of its owner in both its exterior and interior detail. Foote is believed to have engaged his workers on the interior of his own home during quiet business periods. Loftus Foote took over and expanded the family business after the death of this father. He and his wife lived in the family home and they added a large room at the rear of the house and enclosed some verandah sections to create extra living rooms. In 2007, the house was named Baile More after a small town in Country Wicklow where Arthur Foote was born. Arthur Foote’s joinery business was initially in Bremer Street but burnt down in July 1904, and he would move to Lowry Street, North Ipswich. Ripley Valley Town Centre underway Work has started on the new Town Centre in Ripley Valley, with the first sod turning on the $1.5 billlion project. Ipswich City Mayor Paul Pisasale joined with Sekisui House Australia CEO Toru Abe to turn the first sod, to celebrate the start of construction. Stage 1 is set to open in 2017, with a 3,800m² full line Coles supermarket, 20 specialty shops and a medical centre. Mr Abe said it would be the primary town centre for the Ripley Valley, and Stage 1 would deliver a number of key services. “On completion the Centre will service 120,000 people and offer 257,000m2 GFA – aabout 40 football fields – providing retail, commercial and community space,” he said. “This will deliver a major regional shopping centre, a transit centre, health and education facilities, cafes, restaurants, parks and community facilities to cater to the region’s projected population of 120,000 people. “More than $10 million is being invested in associated infrastructure which will include an upgrade to Ripley Road to improve links to the Cunningham and Centenary Highways. This month Ecco Ripley celebrates three years since its first sod was turned.”

Cr Pisasale said the Town Centre would be a huge milestone for the Ripley Valley region. “Ripley Valley is going from strength-tostrength and its sustainable development will be a major contributor to population growth. By 2031 an estimated 442,000 residents will call Ipswich home,” Cr Pisasale said. “Located in the western growth corridor, Ripley Valley is expected to accommodate 25 percent of South-East Queensland’s population increase over the next 20 years and Ripley Town Centre will provide key services to the region.” Coles Regional Manager Tanya Travis said Ripley Town Centre would be home to the first Coles store for the Ripley Valley region. “It’s an exciting time for Coles to branch out into a new region and be a part of, what will be the go-to retail destination of the Ripley Valley,” Ms Travis said. “Doors are set to open to our full line Coles Supermarket in 2017, with more than 100 jobs to be delivered during construction and employment opportunities provided to more than 100 locals.” Below: Mayor Paul Pisasale, Coles Regional Manager Tanya Travis, Sekisui House Australia CFO & General
