my HOLIDAY TIME! As IpswichLife goes to print this week I’m across the ditch touring New Zealand with my family! This issue is packed with great features such as our ‘Focus on Education’ and ‘Pathways to Employment’. It’s getting close to that first Tuesday in November when just about everyone in Australia turns to Flemmington for the Melbourne Cup. Check out our special feature on getting ready for party time at your favourite venue in Ipswich, and get that wardrobe ready. Ipswich hosted two great events recently - the Ipswich Fashion Festival, presented by IpswichLife, and Kitsch in the Swich in the Mall. Both are now signature events for Ipswich. Even the rain couldn’t keep the rockers and kitschy kittens from enjoying the fun and fashion parades and stalls. Check out our write-up on one of Ipswich’s iconic destinations for weddings, parties and functions Woodlands of Marburg - for that next special event you organise. darren@strikepublications.com.au

Former model and fourth-generation grazier, Nicole returned to her family’s property in the early 1990s - and is now the business manager there. Nicole has a hands-on role in the running the property that has been in her family since the 1800s. Nicole’s great-grandfather acquired the farm, called ‘Murki’, in 1893, and he now lies buried in its soil. It’s this sense of emotional attachment that compelled Nicole to return to work the land, and write about it. That compulsion has turned into a career that has resulted in (so far) six books, including one nominated for the 2001 Australian Book Industry Award. Her new novel, ‘Wild Lands’ is a story set in New South Wales in 1838 - a time when settlers were at odds with the land and the original inhabitants. This is a period that is now being looked at closely by historians. “I was last in Ipswich for Absolution Creek, and I’m still on a deal to produce a book every year,” Nicole said. “I’m doing a big tour for ‘Wild Lands’, around 30 events, so its pretty full on. It’s great to get out there, especially to rural areas. “People there feel they can relate to me as I live in the country, plus they love the fact that authors

has sold more than 100,000 books across Australia, never dreamt she would be touring the nation, promoting her latest bestselling novel but that’s common practice for this outstanding novelist. are taking the time to get out and meet their readers. It wasn’t common a few years ago and my publisher tells me that they blame me for everyone wanting to get out and tour now. I did 42 events for my first book!” Nicole has proudly steeped herself in the bush, in history and the Australian language, and takes pride in the fact that her stories wear their heart on their sleeve. “All my works have had some type of historical element in them. Last year’s book for example was set in America and Australia in the 1930s comparing rural life. With ‘Wild Lands’ I drew on something from my family archives, and I wanted to talk about that initial rural settlement in Australia, which happened alongside the emergence of the wool industry,” Nicole said. “This book takes it back to look at that initial conflict between settlers and Australia’s first people in the 1830s. I just really wanted to talk about what it must have been like starting a business in a frontier country. It was a period when there was conflict not just between locals and settlers, but amongst the settlers too there was skirmishing and in-fighting. “I don’t think this period in Australian history

has been covered much because maybe authors haven’t been keen to visit that time. For me, because of my bush background it was a natural progression. “As far as the readers interest is concerned, the ‘Rural Romance’ genre has awakened a huge interest in Australian stories, written by Australian people. With ‘Wild Lands’ recounting Australian history it’s an extension of that interest. I was only saying while driving from Warwick to Ipswich that people overseas must wonder how far it is to the next town? Most of us don’t appreciate the vastness of our country. Imagine what that was like in the 1800s?” Nicole draws inspiration from her own family history, and when she puts her heart and soul into a book, she really does. “My great grandfather selected the family land in 1893. It’s that whole idea of claiming something that you’re going to turn into a business… in the middle of nowhere that I find fascinating. “When a new book arrives in the mail and I go ‘wow look at this! It’s quite surreal, sitting on a laptop creating something, thinking ‘I hope this works, I hope people like it, I hope it’s not crap’.

Discover Fernvale

“Then when it goes off to the publisher and you sort of don’t want to hear back from them in case they don’t like it,” Nicole said. “Then it goes to editing, backwards and forwards…yet it never stops being a thrill seeing my books on the shelves, and I always think ‘I made that’. “Someone said to me a few years ago ‘Australia can never produce those big sweeping landscape novels that they have in America because we don’t have that Wild West experience.’ “I thought ‘you have to be joking!’ Our country may not have been settled as early as America was, but we still have these massive open spaces and our frontier experience matches theirs, but uniquely Australian. “There is so much interest now in Australian history. All of a sudden people are thirsty to learn about our country, and will always be a romanticism about the Australias bush. “For me, it’s grounding. This is real. This is solid…and its ours!”

Grants enable community groups to grow

Ipswich honours Harold Blair Aboriginal singer Harold Blair’s connection with Ipswich has been recognised with the unveiling of a commemorative plaque on the site where he worked for a short period in 1944. The business in Mary Street Blackstone now occupied by O’Connell Agencies was formerly used by General Fertilizers Limited. The ceremony was witnessed by his wife Dorothy Blair who travelled to Ipswich especially for the occasion. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale welcomed Mrs Blair and other Indigenous and community representatives. He said the local federal electorate of Blair was created in 1988 and named after Harold, but it was his career as an educator and first Indigenous secondary teacher that he devoted most of his life. “This plaque at O’Connell Agencies in Mary Street Blackstone recognises when Harold was employed by the former business on this site,” said Mayor Pisasale. “While working here a young Harold Blair

was given the day off to audition for world famous soprano Marjorie Lawrence which led to a career as an acclaimed tenor. “He became a household name with appearances on ABC radio and live performances in halls across Australia. “Harold toured Australia performing for the ABC and studied further in the USA. “Harold had a brief foray into politics in 1964 when he stood as the Labor candidate for the blue-ribbon Liberal state seat of Mentone. He won on the primary vote, but lost on the secondary count,” Cr Pisasale said. Mr Blair was born at Cherbourg in September 1924 and six months later moved to Purga Mission where he lived until the age of 16. During World War II he relocated to work in the canefields around Bundaberg before returning to Ipswich prior to launching into a career on the stage.

Seven community groups in Ipswich have received grants totalling $136,000 from the Gambling Community Benefit Fund, including the Animal Welfare League. With the grant of $27,400 the Ipswich Veterinary Clinic will be able to purchase an Ultrasound machine and a Patient Monitor to help with diagnosis and treatment of pets brought to the clinic. Practice Manager, Taleah Hartley, said the clinic offered veterinary services to the general public on discounted fee basis, and provided treatments such as desexing and innoculations for animals from the Ipswich Rehoming Centre. Member for Ipswich, Jennifer Howard, said that local organisations such as the Clinic and the other grant recipients perform essential support work within the community. “They survive on the generosity of the

community and volunteers, so it is important that we provide this support to these groups that do so much in our community,” she said. “Without additional financial assistance from community grants these organisations would struggle to upgrade or replace resources and introduce new programs. “I am also delighted to see the Ipswich Bowls Club obtain nearly $32,000 in funding to upgrade its greens, and the Ipswich Community Band can now buy new instruments.” Other successful Ipswich organisations are: · University of the Third Age Ipswich $14,383 · Ozcare Ipswich $15,000 · Ipswich community Band $24,329 · Ipswich Hospital Museum $4,912 · Bremer Catchment Association $18,163 Ms Howard said so much is possible to be achieved with grants from the Community Gambling Benefit Fund. “Not-for profit community organisations can receive small grants of up to $35,000 for specific equipment or other tangible items. I encourage all eligible community and sporting groups to consider making an application for these essential grants,” Ms Howard said. The next funding round opens mid-October 2015, closing 30 November 2015. For more information visit www.justice.qld.gov.au. City Vibe PEOPLE OF IPSWICH

Sandra’s clear choice of career An Ipswich glass and glazing apprentice is making a name in an industry traditionally dominated by men, and Ipswich’s Sandra Entermann couldn’t be happier about it. What started out as the chance to help in her brother’s business has turned in a 22 year career for Sandra at Greg’s Glass, where she is often found cutting glass, mirrors and all kinds of work involving a material that would make most people nervous about handling. “I went to uni but never got to the study part. I enrolled to study Education and decided to take a gap year, which then turned into a gap 22 years!” Sandra said. “For a few months I was looking for work, then my brother who worked here at Greg’s Glass bought the business in 1993. When you leave school you’re in the same boat with everyone, and I was prepared to do anything, but ideally something I liked. “My brother asked me if I was keen to lend a hand with the business (he actually interviewed me in his PJs), and I agreed. I started in the office but soon realised that it wasn’t a good move sending people away because there wasn’t someone here to cut glass on the spot. It just wasn’t productive so I wanted to learn the trade. I watched them and kept practising on glass over and over and luckily there was no pressure. So for 20 years I was doing as much as I could do. I thought about doing the apprenticeship earlier but it meant going to TAFE, which

I didn’t want to do as I’d be away from the business. “But then I found a course that I could get recognition from my on the job learning, plus they came to me. I could have done a lot

more on RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) but wanted to learn things on site that I don’t normally do, which makes it beneficial to me and the business in the long run.” Sandra has a passion for glass, and still loves going to work every day. Some people say if you do what you love, you never have to work a day in your life! “I love the industry”, Sandra said. “It keeps my artistic side happy, and being a small business we get so much variety of work. You never know what you’ll be working on day after day. “One of my favourites was doing a display case for a Sydney 2000 Olympic Torch. Also I love doing side mirrors on cars. “My message to women out there is that I’m not doing this to prove a point, but if you are tempted to get into a trade, glazing is a good one. Just remember to respect the glass,” Sandra said. “Practice makes permanent. I think glazing and hairdressing are two jobs that will never be replaced. A computer is never going to replace those jobs. There aren’t too many glaziers in Australia, and even less females. Any woman would be an asset to the industry.“ Photo: Sandra Entermann at work as a glazier at Greg’s Glass encourages woment to pursue their dream employment goals.

Country music comes to Ipswich Country music fans, and everyone who enjoys a great family day out, need to save the date for the Ipswich Country Music Festival, to be staged at Swifts Sports Fields, Ipswich Boonah Road (near McDonalds) Saturday, October 17. The event will be staged by the Rotary Club of Booval, with proceeds going to the Queensland Drought Appeal and local youth programs. President Graham Keidges said that last year the event attracted more than 700 people, and they hope to get more than a thousand people attend this year. “A couple of big stages will be going in for the Festival, and it’s an event that caters for the whole family,” he said. “The lineup of performers include Graham Rodger and Laura Downing, who are regulars at the Tamworth Country Music Festival, along with the Timbah Country Rock Band who play just about everything, not just country music, so they should appeal to a wide cross-section of the audience.”

Graham said the festival runs from 2pm until 10pm, with a varied program, including an animal nursery for the kids, a food court running all day and night-time fireworks – even a gumboot throwing contest. A major attraction will also be the touring monster size Safety Truck to share messages about sharing the road with trucks safely, running videos inside the truck – and there will be vintage cars and engines. Graham said that the entertainment would not be ear-splitting, allowing families to enjoy all the attractions and performances throughout the day and evening.

Even though Townsville were the minor premiers and firm favourites to take out the Intrust Super Cup Grand Final they didn’t count on the tactics of the Ipswich Jets. Jets players ran sideways, they circled the opposition, looking, probing for a break in the Blackhawks line. The Jets also attacked and defended fiercely, taking massive hits from the much bigger Townsville forwards and attacking the line at every opportunity. The Jets lost seven games during the regular season but created their own momentum, winning all three knockout finals leading into the Grand Final. This gave the players belief that whatever team confronted them, they could beat them. Things didn’t start all that well for the Jets, with the Blackhawks’ centre Tom Humble charging through from close range to open up a 4-0 lead after just three minutes,. In the first 15 minutes the Jets looked nervous and on the back foot, as the Blackhawks spent most time in their territory. One of the hallmarks of the Jets’ season has been the ability to break away from their own half and make penetrating runs into enemy territory. As the pressure mounted on the Jets in their own half the flying Fijian Nemani Valekapa skipped across field and put Marmin Barba in the clear and he raced down the left touchline. Barba was held up five metres short but managed an

overhead pass to Dane Phillips to score out wide, with the conversion not successful. The Jets were off and running, helped by a wayward Blackhawks pass infield minutes later, only to find Barba in the right spot at the right time to ground the ball in goal for his 30th try of the season. The conversion made it 12-4 after 20 minutes and what followed was a period of strong hit-ups and torrid defence as both teams tried to gain the physical ascendency, before quick hands along the Blackhawks backline put Zac Santo over for a try. Ipswich fans gasped seven minutes from half time when one of their stars, Kurt Capewell, sustained an ankle injury and retired injured, playing no further part in the game. The pressure mounted on both teams, but it was the Blackhawks who fumbled close to their own line just before halftime. In a set move from the ensuing scrum, Carlin Anderson sliced through the defensive line at blistering speed to set up a 16-8 scoreline at the break. The Blackhawks needed to score next in the second half but when Keiron Lander scored from a Dane Phillips’ grubber kick the road back in the slippery conditions became a tough assignment. The second half tested both teams’ resolve to battle it out to the end, with tries to the ‘Fijian Ferrari’ (Nemani Valekapa),

Judges choose Enviro-Photo winners The judges have made their decisions on the winners in this year’s Ipswich Enviroplan Photographic Competition. Now, the only judging rests with the Ipswich public in voting for the ‘Peoples’ Choice Award’. The winning entries in each category will be displayed at Riverlink Shopping Centre during from 19 October until 2 November, and It was a tough but enjoyable assignment for the judges, John Armstrong and Michael Snedic, as the quality of works this year was of the highest order. With a record 1200 entries submitted by school-age and adult photographers. “I was particularly impressed that the photographers got out into the local environment, and the entries showed a lot of planning went into getting that perfect shot,” said John. “IpswichLife is proud to sponsor the Enviroplan competition this year. Michael and I commented a number of times during the judging that a number of entries in each category could have won but we had to decide on a winner, runner-up and the special mentions in each category. “Everyone is encouraged to view the exhibition of works at Riverlink and vote for your favourite. The overall winning entry, in particular, would hold its own in any national or international photographic competition.” The Awards Night, when all the winners will receive their prizes and recognition, will be held on Monday evening, October 12 at the Ipswich Civic Centre.

The evening launch of the third Ipswich Fashion Festival proved a huge success, bringing together designers, creators and retail fashion from all over South East and Central Queensland. More than 260 guests enjoyed champagne and canapés at the Ipswich Civic Centre and left proclaiming amazing reviews, such as: “An immensely enjoyable and fun evening”. “Congratulations on another successful event. Fashion and hair were superb”. The fashion show was opened with an electric performance by Those Tap Guys. The fashion was just as fascinating with the vibrant and stylish creations by Pia du Pradal followed by exquisite designs by Julie Tengdahl, the elegance and beauty of Living Silk, the romantic style of Odyssey, and the couture of Bora. Ipswich retailers and designers provided a fascinating mix of the traditional and the uniquely individual. Diamond Dames

showcased classic Retro Style glamour, while Cassandra’s Closet brought drama and innovation with alternative daring. But it was Vanessa Hoe and her When Freddie Met Lilly brand that took the runway by storm. Straight off the plane from opening New York Fashion Week, Vanessa presented Ipswich with the stunning collection she featured on the catwalk in the city that never sleeps. Vanessa’s Hepburnesque collection, inspired by Audrey Hepburn, celebrates the star’s soft elegance. “The collection is ultra modern but we also have a hint of vintage glamour, very Old Hollywood inspired,” Vanessa said. Host Pam Tamblyn, principal of Tamblyn Models, was joined by the extremely funny, loud and proud design diva Leigh Buchanan who had the audience laughing and begging for more before introducing the Pfaff Student and Aspire Fashion Design Awards. St Edmund’s College has bid a fond farewell to Les Gamble, a much-loved teacher, guidance counsellor, and mentor, at a special assembly recently. A member of staff at St Edmunds since 1977 (the year Star Wars was released if that jogs your memory), during which time he has held numerous roles in addition to his teaching position, including History Co-ordinator, and Year 11 Pastoral Dean. Since 1992, he has been the College’s Careers Guidance Counsellor. “Today, at assembly, we farewell a legend of the College,” College Principal, Mr Chris Leadbetter said. “Les has made a significant contribution to the lives of many students, both past and present. His students will remember him as an excellent practitioner, a calm, yet authoritative teacher, and a man of genuine care.” Mr Matthew Hickey, speaking on behalf of past students of the College, praised

Mr Gamble’s unique ability to inspire and motivate students of all ability levels through his own love of classical literature and history. “He did that, because he understood, inherently, the school motto: Possunt Quia Posse Videntur – they are achievers because they see they have ability. Les helped every student to see their ability.” Mr Paul Reeves, Head of Department for English, paid tribute to Mr Gamble on behalf of the staff. Under the theme ‘Les is More’, Mr Reeves highlighted the loss to the College represented by Mr Gamble’s retirement. “Les is more than a colleague. He is a friend. He is a helping hand. “Les is more than retirement. He is an example, he is a benchmark, he is a lesson in humility, in quiet, caring efficiency. He is a loss to the College”. Mr Gamble plans to spend his retirement indulging in one of his other great passions aside from the College – travel.

St. Edmund’s College St Edmund’s College, an inclusive Catholic community, enriched by Ipswich culture and grounded in the Edmund Rice Tradition, educates and inspires young men to live simply and to make a difference. PATHWAYSTO EMPLOYMENT

Employ outside the box Finding hard-working, loyal and reliable employees who are passionate about the business they work for sounds like a long, hard slog, if not an outright dream, for many employers. But according to Llewellyn Motors General Manager James Sturges, all it took was one phone call to Mylestones Employment to start the partnership. “In today’s society it’s hard to find committed people who want to work with your organisation and the Mylestones Employment team find that,” Mr Sturges said. “All employees who come to us from Mylestones come in every day dedicated to their work and treat it as their own business – you can’t ask for better than that,” he said. Did you know approximately 20 per cent of people in Ipswich have a disability or barrier? A large portion of this number are eager to work and contribute to their community. Mylestones Employment matches local job seekers with disabilities and barriers to Ipswich employers who want hard working and reliable staff. The Mylestones Employment team are dedicated to building

better businesses in the Ipswich community. There are many misconceptions that surround what it actually means to employ someone with a disability, and it’s time to break it down. Myth #1: Workers compensation costs will skyrocket. Wrong. Premiums are based on accidents at work and not the characteristics of employees. James Sturges agreed, saying “workers comp is all about how we conduct ourselves and our business, not about the people we employ”. Myth #2: The person won’t ‘fit in’. Untrue. In most cases, employing people with disabilities builds staff morale and teamwork. James said that “if anything, it creates a more inclusive workplace because respect is so important to us at Llewellyn Motors.” Myth #3: They work too slowly.

The reality is that most people with a disability, with the right support, work at productivity levels equivalent to other employees. There are also wage subsidies and financial incentives available if you work with a Disability Employment Service like Mylestones. “From a management perspective point of view there is no difference and I think that in the long term there is absolutely no productivity impact,” James said. Myth #4: It’s too expensive Wrong again! If you work with Mylestones Employment they can do it all for you (for free)! Mylestones Employment can help you build a better business. USQ social hub shares the true experience of uni A social media support network hub has transformed the way University of Southern Queensland students engage and learn. Launched last year, Social Hub aims to improve a student’s learning experience and allow people from diverse backgrounds to seek out advice, support and encouragement from other students and graduates. USQ Springfield psychology student Kathleen Rozeck uses Social Hub to share her experiences as an Indigenous student providing simple steps to others to help them succeed at university, while raising a family. As an Indigenous student, Kathleen sometimes finds she’s in the minority when it comes to going to uni. While USQ has some great support programs for students to help them achieve their goals and ambitions, those who come from culturally different backgrounds sometimes need that extra bit of assistance. Apart from being culturally different, Kathleen finds she is older than others in her class. “Many of us have families to care for while studying and we frequently choose degrees that allow us to go back into our communities to make positive changes and help others to follow their dreams,” Kathleen said. “There can be a lot of pressure and an emphasis on doing well, not just for yourself but also for your community.” For Kathleen, Social Hub gives her the chance to share her stories, the good times and those challenging ones when things could have gone better. But knowing that there are others out there online who have experienced the same issues and have come through okay is what makes the Hub so interesting. Accessible at social.usq.edu.au, Social Hub integrates University related blogs, videos, photos, HeyU Magazine and other content into one place. USQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Jan Thomas said the site provides a place where USQ students can hang out online and discover a whole world of university experiences. “Our students and alumni openly share their time at university, which can be an enormous motivator to first time students, giving them insights and an awareness of how anyone can find their place at university,” Professor Thomas said. “Social Hub has been set up so that users can filter results by type of content, by category and tags and we’ve made sure the categories are relevant to the lifestyle factors that impact on student success.” Through written blogs, photos and videos, students can give fellow and potential students a glimpse into what life at USQ is like in a less formal and more meaningful way. To follow the activities of Kathleen and other students at USQ, visit social.usq.edu.au.

It’s called the ‘Brothers Advantage’ and it’s a loyalty rewards program exclusively available to members of Brothers Leagues Club Ipswich. We believe members of Brothers deserve the best program in the region, so we have made some changes to give our loyal members easier access, faster rewards and bigger discounts! Firstly, each tier is now more accessible. There are six different tiers in the Brothers Advantage Program and the entry level to each has been substantially lowered, making greater loyalty rewards more accessible to all our members, including a reduction six times over of points needed to reach the first tier! Increased benefits start when you average just 1,250 points a month. That’s six times lower than that old scheme. PLUS, you will earn these points much faster now that food and beverage sales will contribute to your loyalty rating as well. Until recently, the ratings points that determine your reward level were only based on gaming. In the new program, every single dollar you spend on something to eat or drink will earn Advantage Points which ultimately lead to increased benefits. The new Brothers Advantage Program counts Advantage Points in the current month plus the previous three months. This change gives you more time to earn the points you need and will result in a more consistent point balance. Not only are the tiers easier to reach and maintain in the Advantage Program, the rewards for loyal members will be greater too! Loyalty Reward Points (the ones you can spend) will be earned at a much faster rate (up to 150 per cent faster than the highest tier in the old program) and discounts on drinks and meals will be higher as well (up to twice as high. Longer term members will also appreciate that we are scrapping the annual point purge. Previously, your old points expired at the end of September but under the new program you have at least 12 months to use your Loyalty Reward Points, from the time they are earned. We have spent a lot of time looking at the programs that are available at other clubs both here and interstate. We have intentionally made the Brothers Advantage Program simple to understand and more transparent for our members. We are confident it will be the best loyalty program, not just in Ipswich, but much further afield as well. I encourage everyone to come and enjoy everything we have to offer, and discover the Brothers Advantage for yourself!

WHAT’S NEW

WITH TIM AT THE PRINCE ALFRED HOTEL

OKTOBERFEST AT TAP’D I love this time of the year – the smell of bratwurst and sauerkraut fills the air – the time of the year when beers are best served from steins. Yes, it’s Oktoberfest time! Tap’d at the PA Hotel, Booval is bringing this great German festival to you. Tap’d is showcasing a variety of fully imported German beers. The first German beer on offer is Löwenbräu Original. Brewed since 1383, Löwenbräu is still produced in Munich and is brewed according to the German Reinheitsgebot (purity law) that dates back to 1516. It’s a refreshing yet characteristic beer, slightly dry, spicy, with a trace of malt and delicately bitter. Next is Weinhenstephaner Original. A good beer takes its time. The long storage makes this yellow bright lager, “Original”, a flavourful beer enjoyed with fine pored, white foam. With a mild hoppy note and its pleasant fresh spicy taste, it goes very well with salads, poultry, stews or with a hearty snack. Brewed according to their centuries-old brewing tradition on the Weihenstephan hill. Finally is Hofbräu Dunkel. Dark beer existed in Bavaria long before light beer. This was the first type of beer to be brewed at Hofbräuhaus when it was founded. Today, when beer-lovers all over the world talk about dark beer, they usually mean a Munich style beer. Today, Hofbräu Dunkel - the archetypal Bavarian beer - is still as

16 Ipswich Life

popular as ever. With its alcoholic content of around 5.5% volume and its spicy taste, it’s a refreshing beer that suits all kinds of occasions. A beer in the traditional Munich style! To complete your Oktoberfest experience Tap’d is offering a special Oktoberfest menu. First on the menu is their Pork Hock. This traditional German pork cut is slow roasted to maximise flavour while making it super tender and juicy. It is served with roasted potato, sauerkraut and smoked beer sauce. Next on offer is their traditional German Bratwurst. This German sausage is packed with flavour, served with garlic mash potato and sauerkraut. Both these dishes match perfectly with any of the above beers. Don’t forget Tap’d has 69 other products on tap as well. We’ll see you. Prost! Tim

In The Unlikely Event

By Judy Blume When three planes crashed in Elizabeth, New Jersey within the space of three months in the early 1950s, Newark airport was closed for a year. Each of these disasters was devastating not only for those on board, but also for the close-knit community of people on the ground. In Elizabeth, the plane crashes open up new wounds and mysteries - they bring some families together and tear others apart. But somehow, life continues - and amid grief and loss, hope and love survive. Inspired by real events, Judy Blume uses her imagination to interweave the stories of three generations of families, friends and strangers whose lives are forever changed in the aftermath. KC-30A refuels Joint Strike Fighter A KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport from RAAF Amberley’s No 33 Squadron has conducted the first fuel transfer with its air refuelling boom to an F-35A Joint Strike Fighter of the US Air Force, offloading more than 43,000 pounds of fuel. Australia has committed to buy 72 of the F-35A ‘Lightning II’ variants, as the RAAF’s frontline fighter aircraft, which combines stealth and multi-role capabilities. Chief of the Air Force, Air Marshal Leo Davies, described the trial as a significant step in the development of the KC-30A’s capability. Refuelling between the KC-30A and F-35A is an important step towards the KC-30A’s achievement of Final Operational Capability (FOC) and represents continued progress in the development of the F-35A,” Air Marshal Davies said.

18 Ipswich Life

“This achievement is significant because the future of Australia’s air combat capability is reliant on the successful partnership between these two aircraft and our ability to be interoperable with our international partners.” The KC-30A has two refuelling systems – the hose-and-drogue and Advanced Refuelling Boom System (ARBS). The two different refuelling systems allow RAAF to support a wide range of coalition aircraft on Operation OKRA where a KC-30A is currently deployed to support combat operations against Daesh in Iraq and Syria. The five KC-30As are based at RAAF Amberley, with an additional two expected to arrive in 2018. A single KC-30A can carry a fuel load of more than 100 tonnes and remain 1800 kilometres from its home base with 50 tonnes of fuel available for offload, for four hours.

Does the history of Ipswich people interest you? If so, then the Barry Jones Auditorium of the Ipswich Library is the place to be in October. There will be two illustrated talks about men and women of Ipswich. The first is on 27th October at 10am. “In Her Shoes: Remembering Ipswich Women”, will include information about a dedicated local nurse Louisa Linning and the talk to be given by Irma Deas of the Ipswich Genealogical Society. This will be supported by pictures from the Ipswich City Council’s Picture Ipswich collection showing the Ipswich home front— women’s WWI activities, and Ipswich shops and storefronts for women.

Then on 30th October at noon, Eddie Habben a local military historian, will give a talk about the recent pilgrimage by the members of the Bundamba Anzac Observance Committee to the graves and memorials of WWI Ipswich soldiers in Belgium, France and Gallipoli, and to the WWII graves of Ipswich servicemen and women in Singapore and Thailand. This talk is presented by FOILS, (the Friends of the Ipswich Library Services). Bookings for both events to Ipswich Central Library 3810 6815 or online by visiting www. library.ipswich.qld.gov.au/events. The Kamikaze Hunters

By Will Iredale In May 1945, with victory in Europe established, the war was all but over. But on the other side of the world, the Allies were still engaged in a bitter struggle to control the Pacific. And it was then that the Japanese unleashed a terrible new form of warfare: the suicide pilots, or Kamikaze. Drawing on meticulous research and unique personal access to the remaining survivors, Will Iredale follows a group of young men from the moment they joined up through their initial training to the terrifying reality of fighting against pilots who, in the cruel last summer of the war, chose death rather than risk their country’s dishonourable defeat and deliberately flew their planes into Allied aircraft carriers. A story of courage, valour and dogged determination. (Pan MacMillan) CODE WORD: ‘KAMIKAZE’

Tunnel Rats vs The Taliban

By Jimmy Thomson & Sandy Macgregor This is the powerful story of the sappers, the Army engineers in Afghanistan whose raw courage and skills were inspired by the original Australian Tunnel Rats of the war in Vietnam. These Tunnel Rats of Afghanistan have rooted out the enemy from deep inside their caves and mountain hideouts, have defused thousands of improvised explosive devices (the booby traps and landmines of this most recent of wars), built bridges and schools to win a war of hearts and minds, and fought side by side with special forces commandos and SAS troops. They, too, lost a disproportionate number of their comrades and many returned home with the devastating baggage of war. THREE COPIES TO BE WON! (Allen & Unwin) CODE WORD:‘RATS’ Ipswich Life 19

Top 5 Tips to Achieve a Light & Airy Living space! WITH DAVID HOLDORF AT FURNITURE COURT & BEDS R US

Achieving a light and airy living space requires each element to be considered for its contribution to the entire room, to keep a sense of calm and order. Here are our top 5 Tips to achieve this: 1 Ensure heavy materials and patterns are avoided – Focus on a natural selection of cotton and linens with soft, organic patterns and pastel colourways. 2 Opt for ash or honeyed wood tones as opposed to dark cherry wood finishes – Don’t be afraid to mix lighter wood finishes for a more modern aesthetic. 3 Embrace negative space – Don’t clutter the room with unnecessary items or too many ‘knick-knacks’. 4 To display special items – Choose a designated area like a bespoke shelf, vintage cabinet or a sideboard 5 Choose furniture to stand the test of time – Invest in quality pieces rather than spending on’ throw away’ homewares. You can achieve this look incorporating select pieces from the La-Z-Boy range! The La-Z-Boy Sorrento Push Back Chair in a soft pastel patterned fabric provides a modern, Scandinavian style shape. This, teamed with the Retro Sideboard in Tasmanian Oak, lays the foundation for a calm and pared-back living space. Ford Mustang sells like hot cakes

All-New Tucson – Shifting perceptions through bold design and technology

Customers around the world have made Ford Mustang the best-selling sports car on the globe during the first half of the year, according to global IHS Automotive registration data. During the first six months of 2015, customers globally registered 76,124 vehicles – a 56 percent increase versus the same period last year. “Initial global response to the Mustang has been strong, and we are only in second gear,” said Stephen Odell, executive vice president, Global Marketing, Sales and Service. “We continue accelerating production and global reach with right-hand-drive models now coming out of the plant.” Production of the right-hand-drive Mustang model is officially underway at Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Flat Rock, Mich., continuing the car’s first-ever global launch. This is the first year Mustang is available to customers in more than 100 markets around the world – including those where motorists drive on the left side of the road.

The addition of a right-hand-drive Mustang to Ford’s global vehicle lineup allows export to more than 25 of those markets around the globe, including the UK, South Africa, Australia, New Zealand and Japan. More than 3,000 orders have already been received in Australia, shattering pre-arrival sales expectations. Four hundred orders have been received in New Zealand, where customer deliveries will also begin this spring. Customer anticipation for Mustang in Europe was obvious last year when Ford opened preordering for 500 Mustangs during the 2014 UEFA Champions League finals; customers filled the pre-order list in mere minutes. And which colours are most popular among all-new Mustang customers? Initial sales show that in Europe, Magnetic Grey and Race Red are the most popular exterior paint color choices. Race Red is also the top choice for customers in China, followed by Black. Meanwhile, Black takes the top spot in both the U.S. and the Middle East.

What’s new about the new Hyundai Tucson? Well, a lot: bold, athletic exterior creates a unique SUV appearance, refined interior combines elegance with ergonomics, generous cabin space, connectivity features tailored to customer needs along with active and passive safety technologies All-New Tucson has arrived at Llewellyn Hyundai, with a 1.6L turbo with 7-speed DCT replacing the existing 2.4L petrol. The 2.0-litre petrol and diesel engines will be retained in AWD and FWD variants. Other refinements include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto along with reversing cameras on all trim grades. Bold and athletic exterior of the new Tucson creates unique SUV appearance, adopting the strong proportions and profile of an SUV, and the design confidently creates a sense of the vehicle being sleek and agile. The front of the All-New Tucson is dominated by the Hyundai hexagonal front grille, LED headlamps and a wing-shaped front bumper incorporating LED daytime running lights. The rear has a clean design with horizontal lines accented by slim tail lights.

New soft-touch, high-quality materials across the cabin surfaces reveal extensive ergonomic development. Tucson is built on a new platform that endows this C-SUV with generous interior dimensions. Clever packaging means that there is an excellent exterior-to-interior dimension ratio, optimising the space that is afforded to passengers and luggage. Comfortable and airy inside, it also delivers a substantial 513 litres of luggage capacity with all the seats up. New convenience features offered with the All-New Tucson in Europe include heated and ventilated front seats, with longer seating cushions for enhanced support and comfort. A smart powered tailgate (which opens at the approach of the key-holder) and Smart Parking Assist System (SPAS) with parallel and bay parking function increase everyday usability. Introduction of new technologies include, in some models, an Autonomous Emergency Braking system, a Lane Keeping Assist System, and a Rear Traffic Cross Alert system.
