How Billie McKay became a Masterchef Beating Queensland’s Georgia Barnes to the coveted title, the 23 year old from a farm near Ballina won a car, $250,000, a magazine deal and best of all, a job offer from Heston Blumenthal. Growing up on a farm on the peaceful north coast of New South Wales, Billie McKay is soon off to begin her training in the UK, and Ipswich Life caught up with her the morning after the win aired. “To be honest, the last twenty four hours have been insane, but amazing,” Billie said. “It’s surreal… I can’t quite believe it but I have to get used to it.” Billie credits her parents for giving her what many would consider a great childhood, and shaped who she is. “I think growing up on a farm taught me a lot, it made me who I am, not only the farm life but the work ethic. All that comes from mum and dad, I feel really privileged to have had such an upbringing.” Billie has managed a restaurant in Ballina for several years and always had a keen interest in food. “I’ve always wanted to own my own restaurant, and I’ve worked front of house

my whole working life. I wanted to give the show a whirl and it worked out pretty well to say the least, but the goal eventually is still to own my own restaurant. “I’d always watched the show and loved it, then especially with last year’s show seeing the amazing food that was being put up, my partner encouraged me to apply. So I put the application in, it was a scary thing knowing the standards of food that were expected. “It’s so true that the bar does get raised every year, I remember George said to me its not the judges raising the bar, it’s the contestants. “The staff at work were really happy for me, they knew I had a passion for food, and all of them were so supportive,” Billie said. “I haven’t actually been back to work yet, as I’ve been on this whirlwind. But I can’t wait to get home and see everyone!” Billie never imagined from the start she could win the whole competition, but as time went on she started to believe she was in with a shot. “From the start I was quite nervous and at times terrified…I never dreamt I would make top two, never mind win it. I guess when I

got to top six, then top five…I thought ‘wow I’ve really learnt so much, I could win this’. I was putting up dishes that I was really proud of, and I thought maybe I could pull it off.” Going into the finale, Billie had proven her skills, and often stayed very calm under pressure while others around her fell to pieces. “It’s hard to put my finger on what keeps me calm. Mum and dad have always had the attitude that there’s no point getting frazzled or working yourself up over something, you just get on with the job. I learnt early on that if I can keep calm, it really helped me out. “When I saw that final Heston dish, I just died on the inside. I thought ‘no way’, it was the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen, it didn’t even look like food! I knew I had to just knuckle down and give it my all. “When I finally had it all finished, I was just so proud that I did it, and would have been happy with that, but to go on and get such praise from Heston was just amazing.” If the dessert specialist Reynold had survived to the end, things may have been different for Billie.

Toni Childs to hold Yoga class in Ipswich

Billie McKay has joined a select list of Australians, taking out the 2015 Masterchef title in front of over 2.1 million Aussies watching on TV. “If I had been up against Reynold in the final he would have smashed it I’m sure, he would have been in his element. I was stoked to be up against Georgia in the final, she is such a creative, amazing cook. You can give her any ingredient and she comes up with such great ideas. I loved being in that finale with her. “Getting the job offer at the very end was hands down the best part, you can’t put a price on that, the experience alone will be priceless. “My partner and I are off to London soon, doing my training at The Fat Duck. I’m still pinching myself. I knew there would be opportunities to come out of the show, but never imagined one that good. “I plan to have as much experience under my belt as possible then ideally I plan to still open my own restaurant one day. I love the mid north coast of New South Wales up to Queensland. It’s such a beautiful coastline. I love it there so we’ll have to work out where we plan to settle. “I think working as a manager previously will give me experience on both sides of a business, so once I have my own place hopefully I’ll be able to handle both.”

In what is possibly the first event of its kind in Ipswich, local residents have the chance to enjoy a yoga class conducted with multi-award winning international singer Toni Childs, who is touring Australia at the moment and a devout follower of Yoga. On at Lifestyle Health Club in Raceview August 12, this very special class will combine meditation, dance, and sound healing in a yoga class that will transport and transform your day (maybe even your life) as you enjoy Toni’s Emmy AwardWinning soulful lyrics, “Because You’re Beautiful”; from her 2008 album release “Keep the Faith”. This is a once in a lifetime chance to do a yoga class with an international artist and it’s not every day you get a chance like this. The 57 year old singer from the United States is best known for her songs ‘Don’t Walk Away’ and ‘I’ve Got To Go Now’. Numbers are strictly limited for this unique event. TIME TO START SHOOTING The Enviroplan Photography Competition is on again! Each issue until closing date Ipswich Life will feature some of the best pics from previous years and find out the story behind the photo. This issue we speak with Glenys Passier from Camira who loves to take her camera with her when she paddles around many of our local waterways. The photo Glenys submitted titled ‘Follow Me’ won the 2014 Adult Bremer River category “I’ve lived in Camira for over 30 years and I first heard about the Enviroplan Competition in 2007 when I got myself a good camera,” Glenys said. “A friend said I should have a go at it. So I submitted a photo and came managed a “runner up in the Native Fauna category…so I’ve been doing it every year since.” The photo that Glenys took was at a spot that is only accessible by boat or kayak, and is a piece of Ipswich that many residents would normally never see. “That one was taken on the confluence of the Bremer River and Bundamba Creeks. As you’re paddling down the Bremer you hit the Bundamba creek, and I always take my camera with me when on the water. . I have a tandem kayak, and I sit in the front. I keep my camera with me and if I see something I shoot…the light in that photo was just right. The way the light hit the trees was beautiful. It was just one of those shots

that just catches your attention. “Most people wouldn’t see this area, especially from this angle, and if you haven’t got your camera with you, you can’t get that shot! “Yes, I will be entering again this year, I’ve been travelling out west so haven’t had as much time but I will be putting some pictures in.” Finally, Glenys has advice for anyone thinking about entering the contest. “Do it... absolutely do it. You’re helping to put Ipswich on the map. Ipswich has always been seen as a poor cousin but we have some beautiful spots in our city, and so much wildlife. “I’m working with the council for the Land for Wildlife program, and the number of animals that travel through my property is amazing” Glenys said. “Sometimes I don’t have to travel too far to capture wildlife with my camera!”

A lot of people think they can’t afford to eat organic, but the truth is you can, and to show you just how affordable organic food is Deborah Wray will be hosting a special event ‘Cooking with Deborah Wray’ on August 27th. The event focus will be on giving participants the knowledge needed to make certified organic food affordable. Deborah will be demonstrating simple recipes and giving advice on how sourcing and using certified organic ingredients can be extremely cost efficient, “cooking with organic ingredients provides so much more flavour, so you don’t have to use as many ingredients which saves time and money”. Deborah Wray first became interested in organic food when her son became unwell at the age of 16. “A mother with a sick child very quickly learns what needs to be done to make your child well again” Deborah said. “The more I learnt about the way food is being grown, processed and stored the less I bought from the supermarket”. In 2005 Deborah along with her partner Gary

will fade leather furniture. Aniline and nubuck leathers are particularly susceptible to fading. 6. Protect your furniture from damage Leather is tough and resilient, but it isn’t impervious to damage. Like your own skin, leather needs to be treated with care and protected from scuffs, tears, burns and scratches. Be careful when moving leather furniture. Lift it don’t drag it.

Avoid leaving sharp objects on your furniture.
Keep your furniture safe from pets. Take care when smoking. Leather is fire resistant, but dropped cigarettes will still cause damage.

Take care when using chemicals (nail polish, nail polish remover, cleaning products, etc) on or near your furniture.

 7. Beware of dyes! Dye from newspapers and fabrics – such as clothing, cushions and throws – can transfer to your furniture’s leather upholstery. Stains caused by dye transfer are very difficult to remove.

Always make sure throws and cushions are colour fast before putting them on your lounge.

Never sit wet towels or clothing on your furniture.

Don’t leave newspapers or printed plastic bags sitting on your furniture. For further information please do not hesitate to call our helpful team at your local Furniture Court and Beds R Us. Open 7 Days at 30 South Street Ipswich. Ph 07 3281 2977.

At Furniture Court, when you invest in a new leather lounge we believe it is important that you understand how to care for your purchase and get the most out of your lounge for many years to come. I hope you enjoy the following tips… Leather is a strong and durable material with an average lifespan up to four times longer than that of textiles. This is what makes leather furniture such a sensible investment, but to get the most out of your investment you must care for your leather. The Seven Golden Rules of Leather Care 1. Use protection Protect your leather furniture with Leather Protection Cream before you use it. Reprotect every time you use a leather cleaning product.
2. Clean your furniture regularly, but not excessively. Keeping it clean is one of the best ways to extend the life of your leather furniture. However, to ensure your leather has the longest life possible you need to treat it gently.

 3. Select care products carefully. Only use products specifically designed for leather. Never use strong detergents, chemicals, saddle soaps or hide food. Always test leather care products before use.

 4. Keep your furniture away from heat. Heat causes leather to dry out, making the leather stiff and brittle. Position your furniture at least 30cm away from any sources of heat.

 5. Avoid sunlight! Never place your furniture in direct sunlight. Sunlight has a drying effect on leather, and UV radiation

it all

starts With over 150 years of experience in teaching boys at Ipswich Grammar School, we understand what makes them tick. Over this time we have developed and implemented innovative approaches to address the specific needs of boys as students. Boys learn by doing. They are active learners. They need to be heard. They are strongly influenced by peers and adult mentors. Their learning drops off if classroom discipline is not maintained. Yet they respond to the right incentives and teachers have a strong impact. They learn at their own pace and they are bursting with energy, funny, creative and risk-taking. We inspire, engage and challenge our students, giving them a solid educational foundation so they leave here ready for the challenges of the world ahead of them. We focus entirely on the unique needs of boys and celebrate their strengths and abilities. Knowing boys means we teach them the way they learn best. We set high expectations and they respond with high achievement. We value every boy’s individuality and they learn to value each other. We see their leadership potential and they

step up to become leaders. We enjoy boys’ humour and enthusiasm. We have a balance of female and male teachers who relate well to the boys as well as being mentors and role models. We keep boys active with learning, sports and the arts. We nurture their minds, challenge their bodies and motivate their spirits. We watch them grow with pride. We are committed to helping all our boys develop into men who are competent, confident and compassionate. We see their moral and values development as important as their grades. The boys at Ipswich Grammar learn to be independent yet interconnected. Their intellectual pursuits are encouraged alongside a dedication to their all-round development. We support their striving for excellence as we nourish their understanding of wider social responsibilities and community engagement. We are committed to boys’ education because we know it offers many advantages for boys. That is why we are here. We foster an encouraging environment that

delivers more than exceptional academic results. Whether it is sport, debating, the arts, literacy or the sciences, our students are given the opportunity to excel and network in any field. They are supported by staff from various backgrounds that bring world-class knowledge and experience to the classroom, playing field, and laboratories. Every day is stimulating, unique and exciting. We tap into boys’ sense of wonder and curiosity about the world around them. We encourage the boys to be self-motivated, to strive to do their best in everything they do and to have the confidence to take risks. We provide them with the tools to be able to express themselves clearly and to share their ideas. To be creative, innovative and enterprising thinkers. To know how to gather and analyse information and make informed decisions. These are the tools they will need for tomorrow’s world. After all, our students today are among those who will be thinkers and leaders of the 21st Century. Our focus is to recognise each boy as an individual and offer him the opportunities to

discover and explore his dreams, regardless of how big they are. To give every boy the opportunity to reach his dreams, he needs to have best start to his school life. We believe that start is here. Ipswich Grammar School has recognised changing markets and have realigned the fees in our Early Learning year levels to better reflect this. Starting from 2016 for Prep to Year 3 year levels, the annual tuition is just $5000 per annum, per child. PLUS if you apply on Open Day, we will waive the $110 application fee. To find out more about Ipswich Grammar, to see the school in action and judge for yourself whether your son could reach his full potential here, please come along to our Open Day on Thursday August 20th from 9am – 12pm where you will be taken on a personal tour of the campus by our students and have the opportunity to meet with the Ipswich Grammar leadership team. For more information on Ipswich Grammar School’s Open Day, visit www. ipswichgrammar.com or call our dedicated enrolments team on 3813 9600.

Time to stop the rot

IN BRIEF Spotlight on Bilbies Ipswich is the first city in Australia to support National Bilby Day coming this September. National Bilby and Threatened Species Day would be held at Ipswich’s Queens Park September 13. This year the Save the Bilby Fund is joining forces with the Ipswich Koala Protection Society for this special day, which will a chance to showcase Ipswich’s commitment to wildlife and habitat conservation and especially our support for Australia’s rare marsupial, the bilby. The bilby is a bandicoot with large ears and a long tail that lives in burrows which can be two-metres deep. Ipswich is lucky enough to be home to a bilby exhibit in the Ipswich Nature Centre which is inhabited by two adult and two baby bilbies. The Frank Manthey bilby enclosure home was established in 2009 and features a special bilby burrow. It is named after Ipswich’s Bilby Man, co-founder of the Save the Bilby Fund and former National Parks and Wildlife Service ranger Frank Manthey. The National Bilby and Threatened Species Day in September would include wildlife displays, education and family oriented activities and a family fun run/ walk. The main goal of the event is to create public awareness of the efforts of Save the Bilby Fund and conservation of local wildlife, as well as fundraising. For more information about National Bilby and Threatened Species Day and info on a great competition for schools visit www.savethebilbyfund.org/

Donation welcomed Thanks to a local donation, the Ipswich Nature Centre has welcomed two new residents: a breeding pair of Lace Monitors (Goannas). “Gill” the male and “Bonnie” the female are getting to know each other and are hoped to breed in two years time. They have settled in happily to their new suite and have been soaking up the winter sun. When local GP, Dr Michael Shera from the Flinders Peak Medical Centre heard the Nature Centre was looking for a pair of Lace Monitors, he donated the breeding pair. “I used to breed water dragons as a boy so I’ve always been interested in lizards in general. My brothers and I as kids did a lot of bushwalking,” Dr Shera said. “We were always nervous that if we stood still for too long a goanna might mistake us for a tree to climb. I still bushwalk and I’m still on the lookout for wild goannas. “What’s changed is that I’m lucky enough to now come and see a whole range of lizards and other animals co-habiting at Ipswich Nature Centre. I’m always amazed at how diverse our Australian animals are and how special our South East Queensland region is. “I’m looking forward to showing Gill and Bonnie to my grandchildren. We’ll be

keen to see what colours and patterns the Lace Monitors produce in their offspring,” Dr Shera said. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale welcomed the arrival of the Lace Monitors to the nature centre family and thanked Dr Shera his kind gesture. “Visitors will see Gill’s colouring is the natural grey with blotches and spots and is found locally in bushland. “Bonnie sports colouring of light and dark bands and occurs more in inland and northern Queensland. “Lace Monitors can grow to two and a half metres long and can live to just over twenty years of age in the wild. “They will make a tremendous addition to Ipswich Nature Centre,” Cr Pisasale said. Admission is free with the option of giving a gold coin donation. All donations are used for the care of the animals and future improvements to the Nature Centre. (From left: Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale, Dr Michael Shera from the Flinders Peak Medical Centre and Nicole Richards the Senior Keeper at the Ipswich Nature Centre and Queens Park get up close with new arrival “Bonnie”.)

A staggering eighty per cent of Queensland’s kids aren’t visiting a dentist by the recommended two years of age. Chief Dental Officer Dr Mark Brown said the recent Dental Health Week was an ideal time to highlight the startling figure. “A staggering 32 per cent of children aged 5–6 years have never had a dental visit,” Dr Brown said. “Now is a good time to remind parents to get their child to a dental checkup by the recommended age to detect any problems before they become major issues.” A report was released last year that included figures on childhood tooth decay levels. “Given that half of Queensland children aged 5–10 surveyed had decay in their primary teeth, it’s clear that we need to get our kids’ teeth examined as soon as it’s recommended,” he said. “Parents can give their children a great start by organising a dental check-up for them before their second birthday. “A check-up can pick up problems early and provides a great opportunity to discuss healthy eating and tooth brushing.” Dr Brown reminded parents of the extensive free public dental service in Queensland. “In most communities across Queensland, accessing dental care for children is as simple as attending the dental clinic or van at your child’s school, or travelling a short distance to a local clinic.” Dr Brown encouraged Queensland parents to attend dental visits with their children and lead by example to prevent tooth decay. Children need help with brushing until they are about eight years old. “Tooth decay is preventable and the steps to avoid it are simple – a healthy diet, brushing twice a day, and regular dental check-ups.”

IN BRIEF

WHAT’S ON

Boody’s Store preserved

USQ Springfield Open Day

The future of Boody’s Store at Brassall has now been secured by Ipswich City Council with the site to be formally included in the city’s planning scheme as a ‘Character Place’. The store was owned and operated by the Boody family for 60 years and prior to closing was a major meeting place and popular with local school students. The shop was constructed prior to 1922 with extensions added in 1946 and the early 1970s. Boody’s store played a vital role in the development of the surrounding area as it was the only general store in the district for many years. Its popularity increased in the 1930s and 1940s with the installation of a post box and public telephone. Locals also met at the store to discuss local issues. In its early days Boody’s supplied and delivered produce to local farmers by horse and cart. Mrs Boody sold a share in the business in 1974 after the flood. In 1982 she retired and sold the remaining half share to Ashley Heck and his wife. The Boody’s name was retained up until its recent closure and with it Ipswich said goodbye to the famous 10 metre ‘Wall of Lollies’.

Bottle Alley gets a makeover Over the last few weeks you may have noticed things going on in Bottle Alley, with a huge 26 metre long mural going up celebrating, ironically, the history of Ipswich through bottles. Thanks to funding through Artslink Queensland and Ipswich City Council and other government bodies, the Bottle Alley Mural project is on track. Animating Spaces Ipswich River Live 2015 project is culminating on Saturday August 22nd together with two other locally focused initiatives. SPROUT Ipswich is focusing on a vertical garden installation while using native and edible plants and educating public on seeds propagation while #projectipswich is highlighting local textile heritage. Artist Julie Maddocks from Booval is a driving forces behind the project and is excited about the response she’s got from the public while the project has taken shape. “When Ipswich was looking for spaces to animate, they were specifically looking for projects to invigorate different areas and this was one area that was ignored” Julie said. “It was hoped this would bring a bit of life to Bottle Alley and brighten up that part of the Mall. “This is a history of bottles that have been used or produced in Ipswich over time, dating back to as far as 1850 and finishing

with the Jacaranda Dairy bottle from McMahons soft drinks. “The mural when finished will be 26 metres long and 3 metres high. When I started it was just the history of bottles in Ipswich, but its really getting a life of its own. We’re trying to incorporate McMahons factory, and the signal box which was recently removed, so it’s a work in progress. The Ipswich Historical Society has been on board with us as well. Plus volunteers help us paint and work on the mural.” Several members of the public have also helped with the mural, including police on the Mall ‘beat’, and a couple of Defence Force members who were visiting town from Alaska, plus students from (so far) Ipswich Grammar, St. Mary’s, Cerebal Palsy League, ALARA and more. “We are in the final stages of the mural now. The detailing and final finishes need to go on the mural so our artists will finish it now. The public is welcome to view the progress for the next few weeks.” Below: Volunteer Ashleigh Rumney from Toowoomba and Michelle Andrews from Darra add to the 26 metre mural

Dingley Dell on the way back One of most famous and recognised buildings in Ipswich is coming back, with news the Dingley Dell Gallery at North Ipswich is undergoing renovations. But it is going to take a long time, and a lot of money. Everyone in Ipswich knows Dingley Dell, but you might be surprised to learn that the building dates back over 100 years. Dingley Dell was gifted to the ALARA disability support service by the Ipswich Painters, Potters and Craft Society in 2012. Dingley Dell Gallery was built in the early 1900’s as a Haberdashery shop for two spinster sisters who lived, with their family, in the house on the same grounds. The sisters ran it until 1921 when the land was subdivided and the shop purchased by John Morgan, and wife Bertha Louisa Morgan. John worked at the Morris Woollen Mills and would bring home the “end rolls” of cloth for Bertha to sell through the shop. In 1924 the shop became Powell’s Haberdashery.

In 1951 it was purchased by Ernest and Edith Rossiter, and renamed Rossiter’s Butcher shop. In 1973 Antonius Davina used the shop as an upholstery workshop until it was purchased by Sally Stevenson and operated as a Florist shop from 1977 to 1979. She called the shop “Dingley Dell” after the woods in Surrey where she played as a child, and the name has stuck ever since. In 1981, The Ipswich Painters Potters and Crafts Society took over the running of the Gallery from the Gould’s. After three years they finally raised enough money and paid off the Gallery in May 1984. By then the name “Dingley Dell” was too well known to think of changing it. “It’s a very old building and such an iconic one in Ipswich,” said Executive Manager of ALARA, Judy Dickson. “Everybody in Ipswich knows it. “We said that we wanted to preserve the history of this building and we wanted it to be accessible to everyone, especially artists and community members with disabilities. So we are renovating it but keeping the character of ‘Dingley Dell’. “We’ll be looking at doing ramps, concreting and so on. We are breaking it down because we rely on community donations. We need to raise $200,000 to finish the building. Over the next two years we’d like to see it finished,” Judy said. “There’ll be classes for various arts mediums, especially for those with disabilities. It will be an art space with provisions to display works. We are all about promoting art by people with disabilities.” Check www.facebook. com/DingleyDellGallery to find out more.

IN BRIEF Art Gallery records strong quarter Ipswich Art Gallery continues to pack in the crowds. Councillor Charlie Pisasale said 28,357 people had visited the gallery in the April to June quarter. “This is the extraordinary result of the hard work and creative zeal of the gallery’s team,”Cr Pisasale said. “While the gallery provides entertaining and challenging shows, it also has a wide ranging educational role in the community, regularly hosting exhibitions and education sessions for local schools and community groups. “This spirit of service to the community and excellent customer service make the gallery a much loved local institution.” Figures show that 66% of visitors to the gallery from April to June were Ipswich residents, while 28% had travelled from Brisbane and 5% from elsewhere. Satisfaction with the gallery remains high with 58% of surveyed visitors rating the gallery as excellent and 42% as very good or fairly good. “That’s 100% of visitors walking away from the gallery having really enjoyed the experience,” Cr Pisasale said. “This is a phenomenal achievement.”

Hospital invests in staff With $500,000 up for grabs to invest in projects, staff at the Ipswich Hospital have been encouraged to think outside the box and were given a vote of confidence with 11 projects receiving funding for the next year. For the third year in a row, the West Moreton Hospital and Health Board has committed this money for staff initiated projects that improve the experience of patients across the region’s health services. The Excellence in Care Fund encourages staff to submit new proposals for funding. West Moreton Hospital and Health Board Chair Dr Mary Corbett said the Fund would support 11 start-up projects to be delivered this financial year. “In the past three years we have seen staff innovations revitalise the way we provide care to our patients and this year will be no different,” Dr Corbett said. “Staff across a range of disciplines, from mental health to maternity services, have utilised their frontline experience to advocate for service improvements that enhance the experience of our patients and families. As a result of previous years’ funding Ipswich Hospital now has 13 smartTV devices displaying family movies and photographs installed in Palliative Care, an initiative which has generated overwhelmingly positive feedback from patients and their families. Winners of the Excellence in Care Fund 2015-16 were: My Safety Plan cards Money to create child and youth specific safety plan cards to assist young people and their carers to safely manage suicidal thoughts, deliberate self-harm and related distress. Music resources for patients with dementia A project to reduce stress and anxiety and promote relaxation among dementia patients by providing them with equipment which will allow them to enjoy their own choice of music without disturbing other patients. Implementation of the ‘Safewards’ program Cash to implement the ‘Safewards’ Program at the Integrated Mental Health Unit, which addresses aggressive behaviour and other containment issues in the inpatient psychiatric care environment. The Nunyara Initiative To establish an area where staff and consumers of the Secure Mental Health

Rehabilitation Unit can gather together for organised recreational, culinary and social interaction and education, which is outside of the normal daily routine. Prostate cancer education program Project to provide trained registered nurses with the ability to support prostate cancer patients and their families, similar to the existing support model for breast cancer patients and families. Stroke unit data tracking initiative Technology is needed to import patient demographic information to one central database which can then be used by multiple users and areas to generate real time reports, which are not available in the current system. Supportive intervention for overweight or obese pregnant women A program to support pregnant women who are at high risk of gestational diabetes, hypertension and other adverse pregnancy and delivery issues due to their body weight. Improving performance using data links To integrate separate data sources used to monitor and measure mental health performance which are currently analysed independently. This will enhance decision making and lead to more adaptable and responsive mental health service delivery. Prevention of Catheter Associated Urinary Tract Infection (CAUTI) Almost $70,000 allocated to implement an innovative model of care to reduce the incidence of CAUTI and associated costs. Memorial garden and Level 5 terrace improvement $40,000 to contribute to improving the Level 5 terrace area with shade and gardens, providing patients and their families with a pleasant place to wait, relax or refocus. Health Passport App for disabled patients with communication difficulties Over $100K towards the development of a smartphone App to help improve communication between disabled patients with communication difficulties and their treating team. Below: All the winners of the program were present for the announcements along with Ipswich Hospital Management and board members.

EDUCATION What is the best way to choose a school? Without doubt, the best way to start the search is to give some thought to your child’s potential to succeed at different things and in different environments. Get a clear picture of your child’s interests, abilities and weak spots. Consider their academic strong points as well as their aptitudes in sport, art and other extracurricular areas. Ask your child to think about what they like and don’t like about school, their own strengths and needs, and the things they would like to get out of secondary school. A reasonably complete picture of your child makes it easier to know what you are looking for in a school, and to recognise it when you find it. Primary school teachers who know your child may be useful sources of information. The most systematic way to select a school is to compare the options against a checklist of school types and characteristics. The headings throughout this section can be used to form the basis of these checklists. Start by deciding where you’re prepared to travel to, which sectors are most appropriate, and, if applicable, the religion or ethos you prefer.

The Springfield Anglican College

Discover WestMAC at the Open for Business Day West Moreton Anglican College (WestMAC) will be opening its doors to prospective parents and students at an Open for Business Day on Friday 21 August. WestMAC Principal Geoff McLay said the Open for Business Days had proven very popular with families in previous years as the events provide a unique opportunity to see a normal school day at the College. “The Open for Business Day is best described as a mini Open Day,” Mr McLay said. “The event provides a glimpse of a typical day at the College in a shortened format from 9am to 10.30am,” he said. “Our students and teaching staff will be working in their usual classes during the event so parents can see firsthand the day-to-day life at WestMAC, just as their child would experience it as a student.” The event commences at 9am with a brief welcome and information session by Principal Geoff McLay. Staff members will then conduct personalised tours of the College to see the classrooms in action and various facilities, including three new buildings that opened this year: the Middle School Precinct, West Moreton Region Trade Skills Centre and the Year 1 building extension and refurbishment. The event is open to families considering enrolment in 2016 and beyond, however only limited places remain for the 2016 school year. To find out more about WestMAC’s Open for Business Day, visit www.wmac.com.au.

One of the on-going challenges for schools relates to how best to prepare students for the future, in particular their desired career pathway. While this may seem quite straight forward, the reality is quite complex. Career pathways for students are changing rapidly, requiring attention as students plan out their future. At the Committee for Economic Development of Australia Seminar at the Convention Centre in June, each attendee was provided with a 250 page book with a series of articles written by a number of Australia’s leading authorities on emerging trends. The theme for the seminar being Australia’s future workforce; what will be the jobs available and skills required in the next decade and onwards. Professor Hugh Durrant-Whyte, in his article titled, ‘The impact of computerisation and automation on future employment’, suggests the consequences of changes in technology will result in 40 percent of the jobs in Australia now having a high probability of being substituted with computing in the next decade or two, with another 18 percent having a medium probability of being replaced. Digital disruption, as it is referred to, is only likely to increase. In the travel and tourism industry, people have, for some time, been moving away from using travel agents to businesses such as Airbnb, Couchserfing and Homestay; found on-line, cutting out the middle man and saving significantly on costs. While this trend of replacing people with computerisation and automation does change the landscape before students, and we know this is happening more and more, there is another dimension to the complexity of the future - this being the creation of new information and where this may lead to. Add in the fact that many of the jobs our young people will be employed in have not yet been created and it is not difficult to understand the challenge at hand. Mr Steve Croft - Head of College

Why use a taxation specialist?

TAXTIME It’s that time of year! To maximise your return, consider using someone who lives and breathes the industry who will help you get every single dollar you’re entitled to.

Many people choose to use apps or software provided by the Australian Tax Office (ATO) and lodge their own tax returns each year, but in doing so utilise only a limited source of tax knowledge, by word of mouth and what they find on the Internet. If you use an accountant or qualified tax agent for your return you will pay a fee but more than likely receive a higher return. Tax accountants are in business to maximise your tax return, getting every item that you are legally entitled to claim. By understanding how the ATO operates and the taxes and deductions that exist, a tax professional can help you potentially saving you $1000s. Here are some reasons you should use a tax accountant include: • They may find deductions you never knew you were entitled to claim. • They will help you learn how to organise your files for next year. • The cost of seeing one is tax deductable for the following year. • A good tax accountant will help you understand how to maximise your finances and always be safe and legal in operating under the rules the ATO provide.

• Finally, and best of all, its convenient. Having someone take away the headache of doing your tax for you means you are done and dusted in most cases under an hour, plus the cost of your consultation is tax deductible from next year’s tax return.

THAT’S SHOWBIZ

WITH 97.3 FM’s LOUISE

The 80’s are back! Or at least ‘we’re out of ideas’….the next 80’s movie to be revamped for the new millennium is Fatal Attraction. The original starred Michael Douglas and Glenn Close and coined the phrase ‘bunny boiler’. The remake is set to be a Fatal Attraction television series. It’s official! Jurassic World is the fastest movie EVER to make a billion dollars. It smashed the record in just 13 days, surpassing the previous record holder Fast & Furious 7 which took 17 days. In third spot sits Avatar which took 19 days. What’s the bet a little movie called ‘Star Wars’ has a good crack at breaking the record for the 3rd time in just one year?

The 80’s mania continues… Tom Cruise has signed on to reprise his role as Maverick for a upcoming Top Gun sequel. The original film was released in 1986. Producer David Ellision hinted that the sequel may be about fighter pilots vs drones. “There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick, and it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick,” Ellision said. “When you look at the world of dogfighting, what’s interesting about it is that it’s not a world that exists to the same degree when the original movie came out. This world has not been explored. It is very much a world we live in today; where it’s drone technology and fifth generation fighters are really what the United States Navy is calling the last man-made fighter that we’re actually going to produce.”

Aaaaand the 80’s movie sequels keep coming! Arnold Schwarzenegger has confirmed in an interview that he would be starring in upcoming sequels to Conan the Barbarian and Twins. In even MORE movie sequel news, brace yourself for Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Road Chip, Ash vs The Evil Dead (with Bruce Campbell), plus Disney has announced that Darth Vader will appear in Star Wars: Rogue

16 Ipswich Life

One, and ….(you might want to sit down for this one)….Disney has announced a Han Solo stand alone movie, with a younger actor playing the sci-fi icon in a movie set between Episodes III and IV. Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller have signed up to direct the movie which is set for a Summer 2018 release. It’s been over 10 years since he released his last musical project but Will Smith could be making a return to rap music. Smith revealed in an interview that his son Jaden was inspiring him to write new music: “I’m not sure what I’m going to do yet but I’m exploring. I’m in a creative ceiling. (Jaden) tells me I have to write out the things I don’t like. I can’t write and stop, I have to keep going and going and write them out.” Drake is the name being floated around for a possible collaboration. The new Ghostbusters reboot cast is filling in nicely. Cecily Strong (Saturday Night Live), Michael Kenneth Williams (Boardwalk Empire) and Andy Garcia (The Godfather) have signed on to join the cast – which also features leading ladies Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate Mckinnen.

Mila Kunis and Aston Kutcher has finally tied the knot in a secret ceremony. Reports suggest they got married over the ‘4th of July weekend’ at a Secret Garden at Parrish Ranch in Oak Glen, California and decorated the grounds with lots of tents and outdoor activities. Their daughter Wyatt Isabelle was born in October last year. Michael Buble and his wife Luisana Lopilato announced via a very cute video on Instagram that they are expecting baby number 2! Their first son Noah is approaching his 2nd birthday. After the success of the past few Disney live-action films (Cinderella, Maleficent) it’s no surprise that one of their most famous leading men, Prince Charming, would be heading for his own live-action feature as well. Rumour is that a script has been purchased. Why stop at Prince Charming for characters making a big screen comeback? Hello Kitty is also getting her shot at a feature film. Sanrio (owners of the Hello Kitty trademark) are looking at developing a film for a 2019 release. And don’t forget (after the bombshell dropped last year by the company) technically Hello Kitty isn’t a cat. It’s a little girl dressed as a cat. Maybe the new movie will clear that one up for us?

Movie stars com

Actors John Jarratt and Kaarin Fairfax are coming to Ips plus will conduct a Q&A session with locals Best known for his role as Mick Taylor in the ‘Wolf Creek’ movies, Jarratt is a veteran of Aussie TV and screen, and this is your chance to meet Jarratt and see his latest movie which he also produced and directed. ‘StalkHer’ is the story of Jack who is pushed past the brink of his stalking obsession when he finally decides to break into the home of Emily (played by Kaarin Fairfax) to take what he wants by force. However his plans for her pain and his pleasure come unhinged when he wakes up to find himself bleeding and bound to a chair in her kitchen. Jarratt knows Ipswich well, producing and starring in ‘Savages Crossing’ four years ago, and is keen to come back on August 21. “We love Ipswich, I have a lot of good friends there, I’m really looking forward to coming back,” Jarratt said. “We were very well treated when we were filming in Ipswich, do you still have that mad Mayor there running around everywhere?” Jarratt loves getting out to regional areas and promoting the movie in a very tough climate for filmmakers.

“It’s been a tough few years with illegal downloads but the only place they can’t steal is the box office. You get as many people going to the cinema in Ipswich or Toowoomba as you do in Indooroopilly, and often people in regional areas aren’t catered for, so I’m looking forward to getting out there. It should be a heap of fun.” “I first met Kaarin on The Last Outlaw back in 1980 and her performances have always been amazing. She had a couple of daughters and decided she wouldn’t do acting for a while other than on stage,” John said.

swich for a special premiere of the new movie ‘StalkHer’, s along with heaps of photo opportunities.

“Now they’ve grown up, left the nest and Kaarin is back in the film industry, and she is credited as co-director, which was out of necessity. I spend 90 per cent of the film tied to a chair, and the movie all takes place in one night. When you’re tied to a chair it’s hard to check camera angles and such. I directed the film in as much as all the pre-production, and rehearsals were done like a play as most of it takes place in the one location. “Once we got to the set I’d direct, but when the camera was on me, she would take over. She’s directed a lot of theatre so I trust her

implicitly. Good actors don’t need lots of directing anyway, it’s more of a guidance thing. I’ve worked with so many directors over the years I think I know what I’m doing, I’m not flummoxed by it. As an actor I’ve worked with a director every single time, so I wasn’t overawed by it at all. “We still have so many Aussie stories to tell. Everywhere you go that will never change. Stories don’t run out, good ideas are the thing, to find something unique” John said. “There’s plenty of movies coming out of England and Ireland or remember ‘Life is Beautiful’ from Italy…gems come from everywhere, you never know when the next one is going to appear. “I’m looking forward to getting to Ipswich with ‘StalkHer’ and hope everyone will join us for a great night!” John Jarratt & Kaarin Fairfax will be at Limelight Cinemas from 6pm on Friday 21 August for a special meet & greet (and photo opportunities) before introducing their new film, STALKHER, at 7pm. C-17A shares White Ribbon message A pair of White Ribbons took to the skies over Gold Coast and Brisbane recently courtesy of an Air Force C-17A Globemaster. Measuring 4.3 metres in height, the White Ribbons were been applied to both sides of the C-17A’s fuselage, with the flypast being in support of Australia’s ‘White Ribbon Night’ on July 31. The C-17A departed from RAAF Base Amberley, flying at high level to the northern New South Wales coast, before turning north passing Byron Bay, Tweed Heads, and the Gold Coast, flying approximately three kilometres off the coast. The aircraft then came around the north of Stradbroke Island, heading west towards Brisbane and flew over The Gabba. The C-17A then flew along the Brisbane River, turning north over Toowong, returning home to RAAF Base Amberley. Captain of the flight was FLTLT Simon Marshall from 36 Squadron, who said that it

isn’t often that flights like this come up, and he was proud to be involved in showcasing an aircraft that has the capability to not only fly anywhere in the world, but has had a huge profile in the last year or so. “The C-17 is still a relatively new aircraft in the fleet, but because it’s done so much humanitarian work in Japan, Europe, Nepal and Vanuatu recently, it’s had so much media coverage that it’s becoming quite recognisable,” FLTLT Marshall said. White Ribbon Night is an annual initiative intended to raise money to support White Ribbon Australia’s work to deliver vital violence prevention programs across the country, in schools, workplaces and the wider community. Air Force is a proud supporter of White Ribbon Australia and its initiatives. Air Mobility Group, which is the arm of Air Force

that provides airlift and air-to-air refuelling capability, is currently seeking a White Ribbon Australia workplace accreditation. Accreditation recognises organisation’s taking active steps to prevent and respond to violence against women whether it occurs inside or outside the workplace. “It came about as I know the Air Force and Air Mobility have been looking at getting White Ribbon Workplace accreditation, and as part of that we had these big white ribbons painted on the aircraft. So we thought it would be a good idea to show them off, and being so big on the C-17 it’s a great billboard for the cause.“ Often you will see the C-17s flying around Ipswich, but its not often that flights like this over the Brisbane CBD take place. “For training flights we can go anywhere, and we tend not to do a lot of local flying, but we

don’t often do many flights like this. With all the users in civilian airspace in Brisbane and the Gold Coast it can be hard to get access, but they were happy to accommodate this flight. “We disrupt a lot of civilian traffic and as an Air Force we don’t like to affect anybody, we want to be user friendly. For a great photo opportunity like this it’s nice to do, it just takes a bit of extra planning, and the civilian air traffic guys accommodated us well. “These planes can fly absolutely anywhere on the planet, with a couple of fuel stops,” FLTLT Marshall said, “but hopefully with the advent of air-to-air fuelling in the next 12 months it could soon be reduced to just one fuel stop. “Days like the White Ribbon flight are one of the best parts of my job. It’s not every day you get a chance like that to see Brisbane and the Gold Coast from such a vantage point.”

‘Growler’ to join Super Hornet at RAAF Amberley The first of Australia’s newest combat aircraft, the Boeing EA-18G ‘Growler’, has been handed over to the RAAF. Australia is the first nation to operate the Growler outside the United States. Only the US Navy, with 153 of the jets on order, and the RAAF will operate the advanced fighter, billed as the world’s most powerful electronic attack fighter. No 6 Squadon at RAAF Amberley will operate the 12 EA-18G aircraft, joining the fleet of 24 F/A-18F Super Hornets at the air base. A derivative of the F/A-18F Super Hornet, the EA-18G Growler is the only aircraft in production providing tactical jamming and electronic protection, and it shares a high degree of commonality with the Super Hornet. In its combat role the Growler would lead the strike aircraft formation into the target area, which could be defended by an air defence system comprising ground-based missiles and artillery. The job of the Growler crew is to jam the electronic systems, thereby degrading the threat and allowing the following strike aircraft to deliver weapons on target under reduced threat conditions. The Growler is a real ‘game changer’ in the battlespace, as it has an inherent high level of self-protection capability and is able to project that protective shield for other attacking aircraft. As an advanced fighter itself, Growler is able to fight its way into the target area, provide electronic jamming selfprotection and protective support for other fighters, deliver weapons on the target if needed, then fight its way out. Former Chief of Air Force, Air Marshal Geoff Brown, who was a prime mover in the $3.4 billion Growler purchase, said that Australia’s future air combat capability will be a much more lethal force, with Growler’s advanced EW systems and firepower. “In many respects, it’s the final piece of the air power jigsaw puzzle for the RAAF, and my prediction is it will have one of the biggest strategic effects for the Australian Defence Force since the introduction of the F-111 in the 1970s,” Air Marshal Brown said. AIRMSHL Brown said that Australia needed to “pay the price today for a unique capability that would be around for 30 years 20 Ipswich Life

or more.” He said that Growler’s internal and external electronic systems can neutralise air defence systems across the electromagnetic spectrum ranging from missile radars through to computer and phone networks. That guarantees air superiority – with superior combat aircraft such as Growler, Super Hornet and Lightning II – which allows the whole of Defence to function effectively. Growler fits very well with Air Force’s future with the F-35A Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter, to be delivered in the coming decade, by providing electronic warfare support for F-35 fighter squadrons along with the Super Hornet squadrons. Support aircraft such as tactical and strategic airlift types along with maritime patrol aircraft will also benefit from Growler’s presence in areas of operation. The EW capability presented by the EA-!8G also advances ‘Plan Jericho’, the initiative to transform the Air Force into an integrated, networked force able to deliver air power in all operating environments, and Growler will also be a key enabler for both maritime and land forces. The first Growler delivered, A46-301, made its first flight mid-July 13 and is now at Naval Air Station China Lake, California for flight testing. It will then go to Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington State, where RAAF operators will continue training with US Navy aircrew to gain expertise in the highly technical electronic warfare mission. The second RAAF Growler has also made its first flight, while the following 10 aircraft are in various stages of assembly at Boeing’s St Louis plant. On current plans, all 12 aircraft will arrive in Australia by the end of 2017. With the Growler purchase joining the Super Hornet along with the future P-8 Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft purchase and the MQ-4 Triton unmanned aircraft, the RAAF is aligning itself closely with the US Navy, which includes a number of RAAF officers embedded with US Navy operational squadrons Defence plans to achieve Initial Operational Capability (IOC) with Growler in 2018.

Australians at The Great War 1914-1918

by Peter Burness This is the autoritative and concise survey, in words and over 120 images, of Australia’s involvement in the 1914-1918 war. This highly illustrated book features works of art, weapons and vehicles, plus contemporary photographs from the Memorial’s National Collection, as well as maps locating the main battles. Peter Burness provides an explanation of Australia’s role in the Great War, from the Gallipoli campaign to the fighing in France and Belgium, and the actions of the light horse in the Middle East. He also looks at the war years on the home front, and the end of the war, plus the rememberance. (Murdoch Books) CODE WORD: ‘DIGGERS’

by Peter Fitzsimons The Gallipoli Campaign, to say the least, did not go to plan. Of course, the story has been told before, but in this book Peter FitzSimons, with his trademark vibrancy and expert melding of writing and research, not only recreates the disaster as experienced by those who endured it or perished in the attempt, he takes us everywhere. From the secret deliberations of the British War Council, to the Ottoman leadership, to the trenches on both sides of no-man’s-land. True as ever to his mantra of ‘Make it live and breathe’, FitzSimons conveys us to the centre of the story each step of the way, and is able to shine new light on the whole campaign. by Christopher Lee From one of the country’s most accomplished screenwriters comes the a moving, haunting account of one youthful soldier’s journey through the Gallipoli trenches, from the landing in the Spring to the final withdrawal in mid Winter. As screenwriter for the mini-series ‘Gallipoli’, Lee became immersed in the Gallipoli tragedy, its legend and stories of the young men who formed it. After completing the screenplay he realised there was more to be told about the Gallipoli experience, a story left untold. (Penguin) CODE WORD: ‘SEASONS’

by Sergeant Craig Harrison It takes a tough mindset to be a successful sniper, to be able to dig in for days on your own as you wait for your target, and to stay calm on a battlefield when you yourself have become the target. In this actionpacked memoir, Craig takes us from a tough childhood to joining the army at 16, from serving in Bosnia through to two tours of Iraq and Afghanistan. He describes the numerous campaigns he’s taken part in and his special ops missions, and how injury forced him to leave the army. Then, when his identity was revealed, how he was threatened by Al Qaeda. For Craig, the price of heroism has been very high, but to this day, he still holds the world record for teh longest recorded sniper kill. (Pan MacMillan) CODE WORD: ‘SNIPER’

Regional Queensland vacancy rates patchy New vacancy rate data from the REIQ reveals the regional centres throughout the state are moving slowly towards a recovery. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said regional Queensland continued to struggle to find its feet following the resources downturn but some of the hardest hit were clearly entering a stabilisation phase. “We can see those towns, where employment rates are stronger and opportunities are greater, that the rental market is recovering more quickly. “The State Government has announced a range of regional infrastructure projects in its recent budget and these will doubtless impact on the vacancy rates in the coming quarters,” she said. The REIQ classifies vacancy rates of 2.5 per cent or below as tight and rates of 2.5 per cent to 3.5 per cent as healthy. Vacancy rates of 3.6 per cent or above is classed as a weak market. Mackay has recorded its third consecutive drop in its vacancy rate, down 0.3 percentage points since the end of March to 9.1 per cent. “Local agents tell us that Mackay is still absorbing an oversupply in the rental market, however with easing rental prices tenant demand is slowly recovering,” Ms Mercorella said. “We understand that landlords and agents are offering rental incentives such as a week’s

free rent, and this is helping to secure tenants.” After a spike in vacancies at the end of March, Townsville’s vacancy rate dropped 0.6 percentage points to 5.3 per cent at the end of June. “Unemployment still a major issue for the region, however, with a new school being announced in the budget and the continued stabilising presence of government employers such as the Defence Force, Townsville seems to be headed in the right direction,” Ms Mercorella said. Bundaberg recorded the highest vacancy rate in 21 quarters, since March 2009, with a vacancy rate at the end of June 2015 up 0.5 percentage points to 4.6 per cent. Gladstone’s vacancy rate saw a sharp increase since the end of March – something many local agents had been anticipating with the slow release of ex-mining owned properties being brought back into the rental pool. Rockhampton’s rental market also remains in continued oversupply, with its vacancy rate increasing to 6 per cent at the end of June. Local agents say interstate marketeering has severely damaged the region’s rental market and it will take some time for it to recover. Toowoomba’s rental market remained relatively unchanged over the three months to June, with the vacancy rate marginally down 0.1 percentage points to 3.1 per cent.

Mazda Motor Corporation has announced that production of the refreshed Mazda BT-50 utility has commenced at the company’s manufacturing plant in Thailand. Mazda plans to start introducing the updated model from the second half of 2015, starting with Thailand and Australia. The BT-50 defied the conventional image of the pickup truck when the current model was introduced in 2011 as an “active lifestyle vehicle” with modern and refined styling. Since then it has gained great popularity thanks to its excellent driving performance and highly functional interior and cargo space which make it ideal for both personal and business use. Customers with active lifestyles have found that the BT-50 suits their needs for a wide variety of purposes, from transporting the family to facilitating leisure activities. The new BT-50 maintains the versatile practicality and exhilarating driving performance of the current model but the design has been updated to give it a sportier and more powerful presence than ever before. The new styling incorporates a newly designed front face, rear combination lamps and aluminium wheels.
