Beards of Ipswich What began as a simple idea has turned into something getting national attention, as the very first ‘Beards of Ipswich Calendar’ goes on sale. The brainchild of local photographer and relative newbie to the ‘Beard Club’ Jason McNamara has already given interviews to media all over the place, including ABC612, ABC Hobart, and appeared on Network Ten’s ‘Studio 10’ talking about the calendar, which has captured people’s imagination Australia-wide. Available online, the calendar is already into a second print run, and with all profits going to beyondblue, the calendar features a collection of some of the best beards of Ipswich in amusing and creative situations. “It all started with my commitment to laziness,” Jason told Ipswich Life. “I had the chance to let my facial hair go for a while, and once my beard got past the ‘goatee’ stage it turned into something that had its own personality. “The truth is you don’t choose a beard, it chooses you and I ended up with a grey ‘Bushranger’ style beard. All of a sudden I found myself in a situation similar to when you buy a new car. You see the same model as yours, but in different colours, with added extras. I found I was in some kind of ‘Beard Club’ and I got the idea of showcasing some of

the beards of Ipswich in a calendar for a good cause.” The result has been a big hit, with local men sporting their beards in a number of humorous poses such as Jesus with a surfboard, Ned Kelly singing Karaoke, Santa checking his production results, a garden adventurer, a ‘Hangover’ tribute and many more. “Many of these guys have had beards for years, they haven’t jumped on the beard bandwagon. One guy has had it for 37 years, another for 7 years…these are big chunks of their lives. Some feel if they shave it off they lose a bit of themselves, it’s who they are.

“I guess It’s a manly thing, and there are so many styles to choose from which is reflected in the calendar.” Jason searched Ipswich for his ‘Beard Models’, and was surprised by how everyone got on board the project. “Many of them were just customers at the coffee shop I visit daily, and I started handing out my card. Others were just people I met on the street, and I got such a positive reaction. Once I mentioned to them that I was doing this to raise money for beyondblue they loved the idea. “I chose beyondblue as it’s something close

to my heart. I have friends and family close to me who have suffered depression, and I admire their marketing. They always put a bit of humour into what they do, and this ties in well with the charity, but at the end of the day it’s a great cause. “I appeared on Studio 10 promoting the calendar. It was pretty nerve-wracking, but since then I’ve been getting orders from all over Australia. Perth, Darwin, Adelaide… everywhere! “The rule for the models was always simple, you have to either be from Ipswich, live in Ipswich or work in Ipswich. I’ve had lots of people send me photos once the call went out but they weren’t from Ipswich, and I had to stick to my guns. I had one guy in Melbourne who has suffered depression for many years, had a beard and was willing to fly up on his own accord to be in the calendar. “I hope it becomes an annual thing. I will keep mine at least for a while, and then I plan to shave it off and then grow it back…but I plan to take a photo of myself every day as it grows back!” Look on Facebook and search for ‘Beards of Ipswich’ or visit jasonmcnamara.com.au

Longer Loans for Christmas Extended loan periods and increased loan limits are being offered by Ipswich Libraries due to the annual closure over the Christmas/New Year break. With all libraries closing from Christmas Eve to January 4th avid Ipswich readers keen to capitalise on reading time under the air conditioner or by the pool are able to take advantage of longer loan times and the ability to borrow more items. The standard loan period had been increased from four weeks to six weeks throughout December. Loan limits would also be doubled in the week prior to the closedown period. “These initiatives have proven to be very successful in previous years,” said Cr David Pahlke. “Additional loans and extended loan periods ensure there is minimal impact in library customers.” THE FESTIVE SEASON OPENING HOURS ARE: Ipswich Central Branch Closes at 3pm on Thursday, 24 December. Reopens at 9am on Monday, 4 January Redbank Plaza Branch Closes at 3pm on Thursday, 24 December Reopens at 10am on Monday, 4 January Redbank Plains Branch Closes at 3pm on Thursday, 24 December Reopens at 10am on Monday, 4 January Mobile Library Service Closes at 12pm on Thursday, 24 December (Booval stop) Reopens at 9am on Tuesday, 5 January (Brassall stop)

Chamber set for 2016 The Ipswich Chamber of Commerce is ready and raring to go in 2016 after members elected a new board made up of local business people who simply want the best for business in our city. The new nine member team will be headed by a new President, Phillip Bell, who has been a member of the Chamber for almost 3 years and has taken over the role from Anita Dwyer. THE NEW LINE UP CONSISTS OF President: Phillip Bell Senior Vice President: Marie Kavanagh Junior Vice President: Cameron McKenzie Treasurer/Secretary: Rebecca O’Connell Immediate Past President: Anita Dwyer Board Members: Roger Gorrel, Rachel Vickary, Steve Harling, Pushpa Bakshi and Cathryn Warburton By day, Phillip is the Executive Director of Finance and Corporate Services at TAFE Queensland South West, based at the iconic Bundamba campus. “To be honest if business is going well in the region, TAFE does too and vice versa,” Phillip told Ipswich Life after the board announcement. “We are close to industry here, as we train people to support business, to make them more efficient, and that in turn drives productivity. “I got involved in the chamber through TAFE which has a great relationship with the Chamber. I initially started finding my way as a board member, and like any new position,

I had to sit and listen for a while, take in the direction, the culture and get the strategy. When I did, I loved the Chamber work. I don’t consider it work, it’s more like engagement with business for me. Especially in the last twelve months when we’ve introduced new strategies and initiatives, including Shop Ipswich, mentoring and so on.” One of the best things about the Chamber is

that all board members do it on a voluntary basis, and see it as doing something to help make a difference to the Ipswich business community. “All of us on the board are volunteers, we are all involved in business and we have a clear belief that to get the growth we need, we needed structure. “The RAAF superbase, the Inland rail New Generation Rolling Stock Project at Wulkuraka, the growth in Ripley, plus the expected growth in the Ipswich population…that’s an incredible opportunity for businesses to get ready. It’s immense. All of those projects will bring value to Ipswich, and don’t forget the CBD redevelopment” Phillip said. “None of us can do it by ourselves. Council can’t do it on their own, these challenges are best served with a co-ordinated approach. One thing I’ve identified about Ipswich is that levels of government work well together and that’s what sets up apart, as it is rare to see that. We need to enhance those relationships, and so we’re starting from a good place. “My goal is to enhance the value for our members, growing a business is not something they have to do alone. There are some fantastic good news stories out there, so let’s get behind local business!”

Finding Inspiration A new art gallery has opened in the Ipswich Mall, near the entrance to BCC Ipswich City Cinemas. With the support of the Activate Ipswich program, the venue will showcase local artists’ work, and aim to reinvigorate vanishing art forms and traditional skills through workshops. With limited space in Ipswich for artists to display their work, this non-profit gallery will be a chance for local work to get seen, and hopefully…sold! Run by artists as part of a committee, the space is opposite what will soon be the temporary home for the Ipswich Art Gallery, which is moving into the old Timezone for the summer due to urgent renovations. The idea came up when Chairperson Julie Maddocks and Secretary/Treasurer Sandra Evens were working on the Bottle Alley

mural project earlier this year as part of the ‘Animating Spaces’ project. “Everything you see is for sale” Ms Maddocks said. “We like to have artwork that says something about Ipswich, and we have the feature gallery area up for local artists to share their works. “We are on the lookout for local artists to display works and get involved,” she said. “We are especially looking for artists who are skilled in the older, traditional arts. These include woodwork, bronze sculpting, and art in bark. “There is also a feature gallery available for hire by local artists to showcase their works.” Ms Maddocks said. Anyone keen in getting involved can contact Julie at julesart@optusnet.com.au Below: Richard McLaren and Julie Maddocks from Inspirations Art Gallery

MYTOP5 BEST ALBUMS EVER Kath Wilson from Ipswich sent us her top 5 albums of all time. Thanks Kath. A double movie pass is on its way. Follow Ipswich Life on Facebook for more exclusive giveaways and prizes like these!

1 REVOLVER – The Beatles

This is number one because out of all the early albums of the Beatles stands out as such a remove from their usual style. All the songs are like a coming of age and incredibly likeable. From the opening number ‘Taxman’ to the haunting ‘Eleanor Rigby’, & the funny ‘Yellow Submarine’

2 PEARL – Janice Joplin

This was Janice Joplin’s second and last album, which makes it all the more poignant. It has a more polished performance compared to her other efforts, probably due to the inclusion of her new band Full Tilt Boogie Band. Her unique brand of singing swoops you up and dumps you at the end in a satisfying heap.

3 HORSES – Patti Smith

I remember when I bought this album and I listened to it for the first time, it sent chills up my spine and the hair on the back of my neck to rise. To say it has a frisson of sexual tension running through it, is an understatement. Patti Smith’s version of

‘Gloria’, which is phenomenal. A must listen with a glass of wine, candles and your favourite human being beside you.

4 GRACELAND – Paul Simon Paul Simon really outdid himself with this stunningly crafted album full of amazing songs. His interest in Sth African street music was the key driving force behind this effort. In my mind it is the best album he has produced to date, and probably the most successful. The moment ‘The Boy In The Bubble’ starts, you’re hooked. Just a pleasure to listen to, over and over again.

5. IN SEARCH OF THE LOST – Moody Blues

Growing up, the Moody Blues were my addiction and this album being no exception. It’s a wonderful mixture of gorgeous lyrics, soaring vocals, and a plethora of instruments, played by the Moodies themselves. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea but if you take the time to have a listen, you will find an eclectic Album, whose songs wander and weave around each other to create a magical, mysterious blend of genius. Send us YOUR Top 5 and win a movie pass if we print it. Email your details and your Top 5 of anything at all to darren@strikepublications.com.au

Shannon is Spotless She’s known as the ‘Queen of Clean’, and there is (so far), no question on stain removal that Shannon Lush has been unable to answer. Shannon has been on radio and TV for many years all over the world, and has written six books on cleaning and stain removal. Her first book ‘Spotless’ was first released in 2006, and was the highest selling Australian book of that year. Now, Shannon has revisited her original best seller and updated it for a whole new generation. On the line from her home, Shannon said it wasn’t a case of having a good memory when she responds so quickly to a question, its just knowing her stuff. “When you know your subject no matter what it is, that’s easy. If I asked you about stuff you did every day you could do the same, just like anyone,” Shannon said. “When I was four I spilled a bottle of ink on my mum’s couch. She was furious. She said ‘get it out’, and I had no idea what to do, and she told me to use rotten milk. “I didn’t believe her so I asked my grandmother, and she agreed. There are certain enzymes in milk that reacts with the ink, and I found that just fascinating. On my mum’s side of the family, they all passed their handy hints down, and with my interest in chemistry I wanted to know what which of these hints were old wives tales, and what ones really worked.” Shannon believes that all stains can be cleaned up, it is just a simple case of collecting information then finding the solution. “All stains come in certain categories, and

you need a three vital pieces of information to solve each one. First is ‘what is the surface’, as reactions from chemicals depend on what the surface is made up of. Second is what is the stain made of, and if you don’t know there are ways of telling. Third is ‘what have you already done to it?’ as that changes the chemical structure of the stain. Once I know that I can do anything from there. Be it protein, carbs, pigments…they can all be in different combinations and how they work together is what determines the make up.” Walking around the supermarket, there are

Surprise park naming in Goodna Surprises don’t come often to Robert Dow, the man who heads the Queensland consumer transport group Rail Back on Track. The online commuter advocacy forum attracts up to 60,000 visitors a day, all coordinated by Robert Dow from his quiet suburban Goodna home. Recently he and his wife Isabel took a short stroll to the launch of the new half-basketball court at Storr Cct Goodna by Cr Paul Tully prior to the official park naming. Surrounded by almost a hundred kids and parents, Cr Tully proceeded to say the park would be named in honour of a great local identity who had contributed a lot to the community. At that stage Robert Dow had no idea the

park was to be named after him and he walked to the back of the crowd to get a photo of the unveiling of new park sign. When Cr Tully unveiled the sign, there was stunned silence from Robert and his wife Isabel and a roar of approval from the gathering. Cr Tully described Robert as an outstanding community-minded person who excelled at helping others. “I will never forget the look on his face when the sign was unveiled. “It’s hard to keep a secret in Goodna but this time we succeeded by giving Robert the surprise of his life,” Cr Tully said. ENROL NOW FOR 2016 It’s all about Family Allys Kindy is a family-owned Childcare Centre in Ipswich that strongly believes in providing a warm and nurturing environment where children can learn and develop in an atmosphere of trust. We believe one of the many things that sets us apart from other centres is the commitment of our educators. Located just 3 minutes from RAAF Amberley, Allys Kindy in One Mile has a Queensland Government Kindergarten Approved Program. It is delivered by our qualified, 4 year trained early childhood teacher for children in the years prior to Prep, for 40 weeks a year. We can cater for children from 6 weeks up to 5 years old, we have a staffed kitchen on the premises, lots of grassed areas for playtime, plus an ‘Open Door’ policy. This means as parents, we value your opinion and feedback. Director Donna Hayes has over 20 years experience in childcare, and represents the commitment that Allys Kindy shows to Ipswich families. WITH SHARON JONES

Where has 2015 gone? As one of the first agencies to adopt the new branding, we have just celebrated 2 years as helloworld.

AUSS CHRIS IE CLASS TMAS IC REC IPE

PAVLOVA LAYER CAKE • 4 large Sunny Queen egg whites • 1 cup caster sugar • 1 tbsp cornflour • 2 tsp white vinegar • 1 kiwi fruit, peeled and sliced thinly and halved • 1 x 250g punnet strawberries, hulled and quartered • 2 x 120g punnet raspberries • 350ml cream • Small mint leaves to garnish 1. Preheat oven 150°C and line 2 baking trays with baking tray. Draw two 25 cm diameter circle on each piece of baking paper. 2. Place egg whites into the bowl of an electric mixer and beat on medium high speed until stiff peaks form. 3. Gradually add sugar, 1 tbsp at a time, until sugar dissolves and the mixture is thick and glossy. Add the cornflour and white vinegar. 4. Divide mixture evenly between trays and spread with the back of a spoon until an even thickness. 5. Bake 40 minutes, swapping trays half way, until crisp and dry. 6. Turn heat off and leave meringue in oven with door ajar for 1 hour or until completely cooled. 7. Beat cream with electric beaters to firm peaks. Place one of the meringue discs onto serving plate and spread with a third of the cream. Scatter over a third of the berries and place remaining meringue on top. Spoon remaining cream and pile on berries and kiwi fruit. 8. Garnish with mint leaves and serve immediately.

RECIPE CORNER

Ross Dobson’s new book ‘Food + Beer’ is chockers with great heart warming meals that go perfectly with a good beer, ale or stout, and Ross has generously shared some recipes with Ipswich Life

GOULASH

The national dish of Hungary, goulash lies somewhere between a soup and a stew, and reminds me of the Moroccan lamb dish, harira. But don’t get me wrong. Goulash has no identity crisis. It knows exactly what it is: a hearty, comforting staple with more than a hint of warming, spicy paprika and caraway, the latter being a flavour that goes hand in hand with cold climates — and a dark ale!

The Ipswich Nature Centre at Queens Park is the perfect place to discover Australian wildlife. It is open daily from 9.30am-4pm during school holidays but will be closed on Christmas Day. Admission is free, however gold coin donations help us care for the animals and maintain the centre.

Stir the tomatoes through and add about 250 ml (9 fl oz/1 cup) water, stirring to remove any bits stuck to the bottom of the dish. Bring to the boil over high heat, then reduce the heat to low. By Walter Kempowski Swansong 1945 brings together hundreds of letters, diary extracts and autobiographical accounts to chronicle four days in 1945: 20th April, Hitler’s last birthday, 25th April, when American and Soviet troops first met at the Elbe, 30th April, the day Hitler committed suicide, and 8th May, the day of the German surrender. Side by side in these pages, we encounter civilians fleeing on foot to the west, British and American POWs dreaming of home, concentration camp survivors, loyal soldiers from both sides of the conflict as well as national leaders including Churchill. These first-hand accounts, which Walter Kempowski painstakingly collected, organised and shaped for publication over twenty years, provide the raw material of history. Voices from the Front

By Peter Hart Every man who served in the Great War is now deceased, but they have left behind them an enormous collection of oral history, which captures the authentic voices of the front line soldiers. Oral historian Peter Hart brings together accounts from across the conflict, from soldiers, sailors and airmen, from officers and privates alike. In the course of his research, he talked to men who saw their friends die in front of them, who were seriously wounded themselves, men who refused to fight on principle and those whose indomitable spirit carried them through thick and thin. Sometimes they were there at crucial turning points in the war - going over the top in the slaughter of the Somme in 1916 or punching through the German lines to victory in 1918. World War One: A History in 100 Stories

By Bruce Scates, Rebecca Wheatley & Laura Jones World War One: a history in 100 stories remembers not just the men and women who lost their lives during the battles of WWI, but those who returned home as well: the gassed, the crippled, the insane – all those irreparably damaged by war. Drawn from a unique collection of sources, including repatriation files, these heartbreaking and deeply personal stories reveal a broken and suffering generation – gentle men driven to violence, mothers sent insane with grief, the hopelessness of rehabilitation and the quiet, pervasive sadness of loss. They also retrieve a fragile kind of courage from the pain and devastation of a conflict that changed the world. (Penguin) CODE WORD: ‘100’

More than 300 families now call the Honeywood Estate home and it is easy to see why. The Honeywood estate features large traditional sized blocks with peaceful views of the mountain ranges and surrounding rural landscapes. Set in the beautiful Brisbane Valley township of Fernvale you will never want to leave with number of shopping outlets and a vibrant café scene with Brisbane and Ipswich only a short distance away.
Honeywood is one of the rare modern estates that offers traditional sized (600m2 plus) building blocks enabling families to grow and accommodate other things on the property such as sheds, pools and the like. Most blocks also have beautiful scenic views of the mountain ranges and surrounding countryside.
“Buyers at Honeywood do not want to settle for a small block and they don’t need to. Honeywood has large traditional blocks with big back yards on offer while being close to all the benefits of an established community. Honeywood is on the doorstep of a new shopping precinct and centre of town. With its picturesque surroundings and views you almost can’t believe you are only 20 minutes from Ipswich CBD and the Amberley Air Base. Why settle for a small block,” said Honeywood Estate Manager Jarod Herden.

Honeywood’s latest release features only 28 elevated homesites with stunning mountain views and rural vistas that are now ready to build on. This boutique stage is already over 50 per cent sold with the remaining blocks ranging in size from 600 to 829sqm. “One of the most popular attributes of the estate are its elevated natural contours providing most blocks with unique views without the maintenance requirements of acreage lots,” said Mr Herden. The Honeywood estate has always been affordable and continues to be with homesites from a low $139,000, and with help from some of Queensland’s leading builders, there are a number of house and land packages available to suit all buyers starting from only $295,000.
“I’m unaware of any other residential estates in South East Queensland that can offer a new 4 bedroom, 2 bathrooms and 2 car garage home on a 600sqm block for that kind of value,” said Mr Herden. You can find out more about Honeywood at Fernvale by visiting the sales and information centre in the heart of Fernvale located along the Brisbane Valley Highway, or contact the sales office on 5427 0511.

Honda Launches CR-V Series II Honda’s popular SUV the CR-V is now available in a new Limited Edition four-wheel drive variant. “The Honda CR-V pioneered the SUV category in Australia and has continued to be a strong contender in one of the most crowded segments in the market,” Honda Australia Director, Mr. Stephen Collins said. “After the success we’ve had with the two-wheel drive Limited Edition, it was an easy decision to add a four-wheel drive Limited Edition to the range.” Based on the four-wheel drive VTi and only $1,700 more, this Limited Edition is equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, fog lights, side steps, front and rear parking sensors to help navigate tight spaces, dusk-sensing automatic headlights, rain-sensing wipers and is finished off with an exclusive red Limited Edition badge. It also features Honda’s LaneWatch™ blind spot monitoring system, which provides the driver with a view of traffic in the blind spot of the passenger side through a camera in the passenger door mirror. This is shown in realtime on the seven-inch Display Audio touch screen. This variant is on sale now in limited numbers.

Sorento kicks winning goal Kia’s multi-award winning all-new Sorento has added another major award to its resume with outright victory in the highly-competitive Carsguide Car Of The Year. The Sorento SLi diesel left a stellar field of 10 other finalists in its wake, scoring the only unanimous decision in the 19-year history the Carsguide COTY awards. “Kia has come on in leaps and bounds in recent years,” Carsguide Editor Richard Blackburn said. “They have lifted their interior design, they have used Australian engineers to tune their suspension for local conditions and their diesel engines are on par with some of the best for refinement.” Already voted as International SUV of the Year by US publication Road & Travel Magazine and Best New SUV/CUV in the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada awards, the Carsguide COTY award put Sorento into elite company. “This is an outstanding endorsement of Sorento as a model and of Kia as a brand,” Kia Motors Australia Chief Operating Officer, Damien Meredith said. “It is difficult to overstate just how much this award means to Kia. “The Sorento can hold its own in any company. If you are still put off by the badge on the nose, it’s your loss,” Blackburn said.

Ford Mustangs

Nissan NP300 Navara has arrived!

After huge pre-order requests, ‘The Pony’ is poised to accelerate out of the starting gate and take on Australian roads as Ford’s iconic Mustang arrives in Australia. The first customer cars landed in the country at Melbourne’s Appleton Dock. Three more ships carrying customer cars are on their way. The all-new Mustang has become a worldwide sensation, including Australia, where demand has exceeded all expectations. Ford and its dealers across Australia have been inundated with inquiries and demand for the all-new Mustang Fastback and Convertible, with the order bank for one of the world’s most recognisable cars now sitting around 4,000 vehicles with more than 80 per cent paid deposits. These orders account for the first full year of vehicles to be sold in Australia through 2016. “We are simply overwhelmed and humbled by the reception to Mustang thus far, which is probably our closest equivalent to the Beatles first trip to Australia,” Ford President and CEO, Graeme Whickman said. After Mustang pricing was confirmed early this year, Ford saw a spike in interest and deposits, with more than 20,000 people putting their hands up to be kept informed about the new car. “Our Mustang story has been one of the core vehicles in all our activities this year as a halo for the brand. We put a Mustang Convertible on top of one of the key buildings in Circular Quay in Sydney next to the Sydney Opera House for New Year’s eve celebrations and the images of that car went around the world,” Whickman said.
