MEET THE ‘SNAKE B
FROM THE
EDITOR
Julia Baker used to dream of having her own TV show, like many of us. But she made her and her story has captured the imagination of fans in no less than 167 countries…wi
So it begins... Christmas is just five weeks away...can you believe it? It creeps up on us all pretty quick and before you know it you’re humming along to Jingle Bells while going through the specials at the supermarket. So let’s all get in the spirit with Ipswich Life! Ho. Ho. Ho. In this issue we have our second ‘Christmas Gift’ features packed with some great gift ideas from local businesses all over Ipswich. I also had the chance to catch up with Julia Baker aka ‘The Snake Boss’ who was in Ipswich recently and allowed me to get up close and personal with her pet snake ‘Jezabel’. It was only when I got back to the office it hit me....eeek! We’ve got Defence News, giveaways, all the news on the big development at the Tivoli Drive in, pics from the start of construction of Fire Station 101, and lots more including your last chance to get tickets to our preview of Hotel Transylvania 2 on November 22! Remember IpswichLife is FREE for you thanks to our advertisers, so please show them your support and shop local! darren@strikepublications.com.au
The married mum of two teenage girls is still on a ride that began several years ago when she hit rock bottom. Divorced, broke, and low on self-esteem, Julia decided to make changes in her life, and it’s been an incredible turnaround. “I was 39 years old. I was divorced, with two girls, and no job. I came to the realisation that I just wasn’t happy and I thought ‘to hell with it’, and decided I was going to do whatever I wanted to do,” Julia told Ipswich Life. “I thought about all the things I wanted to do, and started reading motivational books. I’d always wanted to be an actress. So I studied acting. Then I thought, I’d love to get a motorbike too. It doesn’t matter what people think…as long as I’m not hurting anyone it’s okay. So I got a motorbike! In my head I could visualise doing a TV show, but I just needed a way to make it happen.” A qualified pastry chef, Julia works full time as a snake catcher in her business 1300 CatchIt, and can be seen with a film crew in tow as she relocates snakes all over South East Queensland. “I saw my first snake about 11 years ago. I was at Australia Zoo with the kids and they
had this massive python. It was first time I’d seen a snake and I loved it. I’m in the queue to get my photo with this snake, and everyone is just horrified and going ‘Ewww yuk!’ “I’m standing there thinking why? It was then I realised how most people feel about snakes. I looked at this poor snake and I welled up with tears when they put it on me. “Now catching snakes is normal for me now. I’d go to barbecues and people say ‘tell us stories about your adventures’ and I have so many. I’m very visual, so I could always see in my head how it would look on camera, and I just felt it would make a great TV show. Initially I put it on my ‘goal list’ and I wanted to call it “Heels, Nails and Scales” but I had no idea how to get it made. “I was online and saw that a TV station was asking for inspirational stories. I sent in my story and within half an hour ‘Woman’s Day’ called me. “So for the next few months I sent my idea to commercial networks but got no response. They said I needed a trailer! ‘With what?’ I had no money for a trailer. Then I was online again and found ‘FlickChicks’ who were keen to do a doco about a snake catcher and they remembered
me from the Woman’s Day article.” One thing led to another and today Julia is marred to her Scottish beau John (and yes, she put ‘meet a Scot’ on her bucket list…as she loves the accent). Her show is screening worldwide, and she has appeared in dozens of articles, appeared on The Project, A Current Affair, Sunrise and many more shows on a regular basis. “I’ve just never had a fear of snakes, but I am scared of spiders and cockroaches, so I understand the feeling of that fear that people have. I don’t think snakes are interested in us, as they are just passing through. “September is the busiest time of year, the start of breeding season. Snakes will come into your house if it’s hot outside, as they just want to cool down. If you see a snake outside up a tree, just leave it alone, but often on hot days I can get ten to fifteen calls in a day…it can be manic! “My advice if you come across a snake in the yard is to firstly take a pic of it…then it can be identified. Then if you’re concerned call a snake catcher. “Some of the strange calls I get have been for a rubber snake in a yard that someone has left

there to keep the birds away! I’ve had a few of those… “I’ve had one guy ring me and told me he was having a shower, looked up and there was a snake wrapped around the showerhead. I also had one lady come home from the Ekka and there was a snake in her bed, all curled up. “I had one lady ring me up. She got home and all these things have been knocked over in her kitchen. She thought she’d been burgled and then in the kitchen on the bench was this huge carpet python!” Julia said. “Today I get emails from people all over the world asking ‘Are you the real Snake Boss?’, and I’m like….yes? I can’t come to terms with the fact people think I’m famous. I don’t FEEL famous. I think when we’ve done more seasons of the show it might start to sink in. “I’m not Steve Irwin…I never proclaim to be an expert on wildlife. I have a passion for wildlife, but I’m not an expert. “Next year I’d like to get a couple of crocodiles, and I want to really catch more snakes around the world, especially a King Cobra in India. Sharing a love of Spending 55 days in space over five missions for NASA, Marsha Ivins retired in 2010 but hasn’t stopped spreading the word about reaching for the stars. Talking at Ipswich Girls Grammar School recently where she addressed a full house of eager students, Marsha shared some fascinating stories from her 37 years at NASA. Ms Ivins also gave a presentation at USQ Springfield for the Space and Sustainability Conference which enthralled over 500 primary students from around the region. Her time in space has shaped the way she sees things back on Earth, and spends much of her time travelling the world with stories of her experiences. “One of the most commonly asked questions I get, no matter where I am in the world is ‘have you seen anything unusual’,” Marsha said. “I haven’t by the way…nobody believes me, but I keep getting asked! “I saw The Martian recently, and there are some technical flaws that even the author admits weren’t right…however it’s Hollywood, but we accept the premise. Almost all of that
technology you see in the movie is stuff we talked about building before our current president cancelled the funding for ironically. “When you’re up in space, you get a different appreciation of earth. You go round every 90 minutes and what you don’t see is the borders that separate other countries or states. “You get that appreciation that is just one planet. I’ve had the chance to go around the world and talk to kids of every country, every religion, and everyone has the same questions, they laugh at the same things…it’s taught me that we are all the same in the end. That’s the wonderful thing.” When asked what the best thing is about being in space Marsha had no hesitation in coming up with an answer. “That’s easy. Floating. Having no gravity and floating around is just the coolest thing ever.” Right: Marsha Ivins with Ipswich Girls Grammar’s Grade 5 student Harriet Viney.

As if you didn’t have enough incentive to join the 19th Annual Ipswich Toy Run on December 13, you could be taking home a holiday voucher thanks to helloworld Ipswich City Mall. Suraj Arachchige has donated $25,000 in travel vouchers that can used towards a holiday for 50 participants in the Toy Run, which raises funds for the Ulysses Club Arthritis Research Fund and the Salvation Army. The event finishes at the Showgrounds. “Last year we got about 750 riders, so we are hoping to top that this year,” said Alan ‘Mousey’ Grey from the Ulysses Club. “Everyone brings a toy and they go to underprivileged families, we filled a truck with toys last year and this year we hope to do even more. It’s great to see Ipswich come together and show their support for a great cause.” For more information call ‘Mousey’ on 0427 033 592 or Ian Winter on 0409 277 087.

Big things to come at drive-in site The Tivoli Drive-in has big plans for the future, and they include having an outdoor stage and function centre which is set to put on shows, festivals and concerts for Ipswich residents. The once troubled drive-in faced extinction two years ago when the call went out to help raise funds for a digital projector due to the lack of movies on film being available. But the community rallied together and today it is one of the most affordable nights out in town, and it regularly draws people from all over South East Queensland to experience what is one of just two drive-ins left in the area. Not one to rest on his laurels, Paster Fred Muys has put in action plans to build a community centre on the site, along with a stage in front of the screen which opens the possibility of outdoor concerts along with festivals and more room for people to enjoy movies outdoors. Thanks to a $538,000 grant from the State Government through the Skilling Queensland for Work initiative, there are now 36 ‘tradies’ who will work on building a new community and function centre which is set to be completed by this time next year. The tradies will leave with qualifications in construction and practical experience. “Over the ten years the drive in has been operating we’ve had over 200 unemployed people work with us, and 73% of those have
found full time employment,” Fred said. “The goal this time next year is to have an operating stage in place, terraced gardens and a fully functional function centre. “We have concept drawings which are subject to town approval plus we’ve got Jeremy Sparks on board from Event Engineering who has worked on many projects around the world including the closing ceremony at the Sydney Olympics. The concept also includes providing increased car parking capacity and improved access to reduce congestion on local streets,” Fred said. “The concept Jeremy has is that people can come to the drive in and either stay in their car or walk down to a grassed area that increases capacity, we can fit in a lot more people that way, and that’s just for the drive in nights. “It depends on the performers we get, but there’s no reason in the future we can’t have Opera, concerts and festivals with food trucks to the side…the possibilities will be endless,” Fred said. “We don’t have anything like this in Ipswich, so it’s very exciting. To be able to watch a live show under the stars will be a unique experience, and it’s a boost to the whole of the Ipswich economy.”

Our respectful acknowledgement to the Traditional Owners and Custodians ,the Yuggera , Juggera and Ugarapul peoples on who’s traditional lands we now stand and create. This Exhibition has been produced by both male and female students of Hymba Yumba and AEP Campuses. The students are the decedents of many nations and peoples from across Ancient Australia. These future leaders and ambassadors have been guided in protocol, art, story and spirituality. These lifelong learnings will help set them apart in all they do, now and into their futures. “Reawakening” is the culmination of these early skills and teachings in both paint and story and we would love for you to visit and share in this Unique Cultural Experience which is Australia. The exhibition runs for two weeks from 15th November due to the proud support of sponsor Steve Rainbow at Articulate Framing Ipswich at 54 Limestone Street, Ipswich (opposite Coles). Phone Steve on 3496 1110 for more information.

Work begins at ‘101’ Work is under way at the old Ipswich Fire Station which is set to be completed in record time as the site is transformed into a digital hub for business. Hutchinson Builders will construct the site, and after completing other projects in Ipswich such as the new classrooms at St Edmunds College, the new Coles complex and the Trade Training Centre at Ipswich State High School, the company has a history of building work in the city over recent years. Renovations will transform the former fire station headquarters at 101 Limestone Street, Ipswich, into the region’s new digital innovation and startup hub. Speaking at the CBD facility, Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale said Fire Station 101 was about providing a community with the tools to tackle digital technology industries and jobs of the future. “Fire Station 101 and the digital economy are all about the future of our kids,” he said. “Ipswich was named in the world’s Top 7 Most Intelligent Communities for 2015 by the Intelligent Community Forum, and last month we got the news that Ipswich has once again been named in the forum’s Smart21 for 2016. Innovations like this will only enhance that global reputation. “We’re going to diversify the Ipswich economy and embrace knowledgeintensive industries that generate export income and boost employment.” Fire Station 101 is a place where people
and businesses can meet, share, learn and grow as part of the South-East Queensland start-up ecosystem. It will be the venue for new digital technology business mentoring, development, co-working, and potential investment. Fire Station 101 will feature: • A central, highly visible location that is close to public transport, cafes and food outlets. • 516sqm of floor space. • 55 desk facility. • High speed internet connectivity over fibre. • High capacity WiFi. • Event and training space for up to 100 people. • An Internet of Things (IoT) demonstrator: The Internet of Things is a network of physical objects or ‘things’ embedded with electronics, software, sensors and network connectivity which enables them to collect and exchange data. In 2015 we are no longer strangers to the online shopping experience. Shop Ipswich is making a huge difference by boosting the online presence of local businesses. Every dollar spent within Ipswich helps our local economy. Every dollar helps create job opportunities for locals and makes Ipswich an attractive place to do business. The Shop Ipswich initiative by Ipswich Chamber of Commerce is actively assisting local businesses large and small to improve their online presence to make it easy to connect with customers. These same customers now expect retailers to offer the convenience of secure online shopping. The chamber is working hard for their members and showcasing our city’s innovative approach to business. Let’s continue to encourage this community spirit and support Ipswich businesses. I urge all residents to shop locally and prove we’re a city that means business. Mayor Paul Pisasale City of Ipswich

Stock up an emergency kit

You don’t have to live in the bush to be threatened by bushfire, which is why families should create a bushfire survival plan to detail how you will prepare and what action to take if threatened by a bushfire. It is important to write down and practice how to evacuate and where to go depending on the fire rating, including leaving your property early if you have children or elderly family with you. For tips visit ruralfire.qld.gov.au

Have you arranged the correct car and household insurance? Do you know what you will take with you if you need to leave early? Have you considered how to deal with pets and livestock? As important as it is to create an evacuation and survival plan, thinking about these other things now will help you be prepared.
Make sure you are listening to the radio or television for emergency announcements if there is a bushfire in your area. If you live in a rural area, make sure you look up the number for your local rural fire service so you can be updated on the fire danger rating and get advice on where the fire is in proximity your property. The Ipswich Rural Fire Service office number is 3381 7122.

In the event of a bushfire it is important to have essential items ready to go. According to the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service, you should have protective full length (cotton and wool) clothing prepared, a first aid kit, torch, gloves and water bottles or containers to carry drinking water.
The Queensland Ambulance Service offers a range of first aid courses including online E-learning. Having the skills to know what to do when someone is injured, including how to treat burns, could one day save a life. Call QAS on 13 QGOV (13 74 68) to book a course or find out more. A Little Ray of Sunshine
Enviroplan People’s Choice Award Winner 2015 Robert (Bobby) Skidmore has taken out the People’s Choice award in this year’s Enviroplan Photography Competition, with his photo ‘A Little Ray of Sunshine’. Bobby never planned the photo, and as he told Ipswich Life it was purely a moment captured in time that he came across purely by accident. “I took the photo about 20 minutes after sunrise at the tail end of winter in South Ripley,” Bobby said. “It was very cold and
there was a fog just breaking up around me. I find that sometimes you can get really lucky and get sunbeams shining through fog which makes a great shot. “I just went out there in the hope of getting a frosty sunrise, or hoping to get some frost covered grass and a barbed wire fence. I saw the fog over a hill and drove over towards a cow that had a pure white calf with it which would make a great shot, but as I hopped out of the car to get a photo I then saw this tree with sunbeams shining through. So I ran over to capture it. “Photography for me is a combination of hobby, while trying to go professional. I took it up as a form of therapy, as I’ve suffered depression. Looking at the world through a lens was very therapeutic, and each day I became more confident, getting out and about.” Bobby said. “It quickly went from the odd photo around the house to the point where now my main focus is storm photography and I have become a sponsored photographer for Higgins Storm Chasing. “I think some people see a spiritual side to the photo while others just love the nature of it all. I donated in collaboration with Jeff Higgins a large framed copy to the family of Jayde Kendall. You can find more of Robert’s work on his Facebook page ‘Mr S Photography’.
TALKING WINE
KC-30A home after trials with Joint Strike Fighter Australia’s KC-30A Multi-Role Tanker Transport based at RAAF Amberley is back home after completing refuelling trials in the United States with the RAAF’s fighter of the future, the F-35A ‘Lightning II’. Operating from Edwards Air Force Base in the California desert, the RAAF KC-30A flew 12 sorties with a US Air Force F-35A. Australia’s first two F-35s are now flying with a US Air Force squadron at Luke Air Force Base in Arizona. During the flight test series, using the 18-metre-long Advanced Refuelling Boom System (ARBS) mounted on the tail of the KC-30A, the RAAF crew made a total of 479 ‘dry’ and 24 ‘wet’ contacts with the refuelling receptacle on the F-35A, and transferred more than 95 tonnes of fuel. KC-30A Transition and Receiver Clearance Manager Wing Commander Grant Kelly said the trials would allow RAAF and foreign F-35As alike to be refuelled. “Air-to-air refuelling will be an important ‘force multiplier’ for the F-35A fleet, considerably boosting their range and endurance, or allowing them to carry bigger payloads,” WGCDR Kelly said.
As well as the ARBS, the KC-30A is also equipped with hose-and-drogue refuelling pods that are compatible with Air Force’s Hornets, Super Hornets and Growlers. A single KC-30A can carry a fuel load of more than 100 tonnes and remain 1800 kilometres from its home base with 50 tonnes of fuel available for offload. “The impact of the KC-30A is being felt in the Middle East Region, where the ARBS and hose-and-drogue refuelling enable RAAF and Coalition aircraft to fly sorties of more than 10 hours,” WGCDR Kelly said. “After more than a year of deployed KC30A operations, it has built a reputation as the ‘Coalition tanker of choice’.” Along with personnel from 33 Squadron a flight test team from the RAAF’s Aircraft Research and Development Unit, supported by flight test instrumentation engineers, were integrated within the USAF Test Centre to work on a dynamic test program. The KC-30A capability will continue growing, with the next series of refuelling trials to include the C-17A Globemaster and P-8A Poseidon.
WITH TIM AT THE PRINCE ALFRED HOTEL
PISTOL PACKIN’ MOMMA Nose Cone Art was a popular art form in the 1930’s and 1940’s particularly as featured on the Liberator Planes. One of the main themes of Nose Cone Art was beautiful women as they were a reminder for the pilots missing their wives and girlfriends back home. Keith Johnston was a pilot in the Second World War and is the father of one of the founders of the Wallace Lane Wine Co and Liberator Wines. Liberator Wines restores the art of Pistol Packin’ Momma to share the joy she brought. Pistol Packin’ Momma Red is a blend of cabernet sauvignon and merlot grapes. The reason this blend works so well is that the two varieties compliment each other allowing a fuller flavoured wine with an all round mouth feel. This approachable, full-flavoured wine derives from fruit sourced from various dry and irrigated vineyards around
Orange in New South Wales. This wine has a tightly woven, complex and elegant nose with prominent notes of red berries, and blackcurrant intertwined with subtle hints of cinnamon and vanilla. The soft and velvety merlot combined with the more powerful cabernet sauvignon grapes produces a luscious red wine. The palate arrives savoury, yet fruit filled, with succulent and luscious blackcurrant and red berry and bright acidity. It builds with wonderful stony, but sinewy, fine tannins and finishes with intriguing earth notes of native dried twigs. Pistol Packin’ Momma Red is the perfect accompaniment to the Char’d Streakhouse’s Beef Brisket slow cooked with red wine, and Slow Roasted Lamb Shoulder. Cheers! Tim

Defence
Now there are eight C-17s at Amberley The flightline at RAAF Amberley is now a little more crowded, with the arrival of the eighth Boeing C-17A Globemaster III at the air base.
As this final aircraft in the fleet, tail number A41-212, touched down at Amberley it marked the end of a long-running and successful project that has avoided many of the pitfalls that have plagued other Defence projects. Each aircraft has been delivered on time and on budget, again demonstrating the value of Australia buying military platforms that have progessed through the operational development phase, with systems and aircraft capability at a mature operational level. Minister for Defence Materiel and Science, Mal Brough, praised the C-17’s “extraordinary lift, range and performance” and becoming an “integral part of the Australian Defence Force’s airlift capability.” “The C-17 allows Australia to rapidly deploy troops, combat equipment, tanks, helicopters and humanitarian resources worldwide,” he said. “The C-17A Globemaster has played a central role in the ADF’s activities, including supporting the international effort to combat Daesh in Iraq and Syria, recovering the victims of the MH17 tragedy in the Ukraine, and delivering disaster relief to victims of the
Vanuatu cyclone and Queensland floods.” Australia’s acquisition of the seventh and eighth C-17 was announced in May. The $1 billion project included $700 million for two aircraft and a further $300 million to build dedicated C-17 maintenance facilities at No 36 Squadron along with upgrades to hardstand and taxiway upgrades. Chief of Air Force Air Marshal, Leo Davies said that the impressive global airlift capability of the C-17 “allows us to provide an air bridge from Australia with supplies to the men and women deployed around the world, support Army operations, and assist at home with disaster relief.” The Boeing Company has shut down its C-17 final assembly plant at Long Beach, California bringing to a close one of the longest running Defence aerospace contracts in history. Over a period spanning more than 25 years Boeing assembled 279 C-17s at the plant. Australia initially ordered four C-17s in 2006, delivered between December that year and January 2008. The fifth and sixth aircraft were delivered in 2011 and 2012.

More than 300 families now call the Honeywood Estate home and it is easy to see why. The Honeywood estate features large traditional sized blocks with peaceful views of the mountain ranges and surrounding rural landscapes. Set in the beautiful Brisbane Valley township of Fernvale you will never want to leave with number of shopping outlets and a vibrant café scene with Brisbane and Ipswich only a short distance away. Honeywood is one of the rare modern estates that offers traditional sized (600m2 plus) building blocks enabling families to grow and accommodate other things on the property such as sheds, pools and the like. Most blocks also have beautiful scenic views of the mountain ranges and surrounding countryside. “Buyers at Honeywood do not want to settle for a small block and they don’t need to. Honeywood has large traditional blocks with big back yards on offer while being close to all the benefits of an established community. Honeywood is on the doorstep of a new shopping precinct and centre of town. With its picturesque surroundings and views you almost can’t believe you are only 20 minutes from Ipswich CBD and the Amberley Air Base. Why settle for a small block,” said Honeywood Estate Manager Jarod Herden.
Honeywood’s latest release features only 28 elevated homesites with stunning mountain views and rural vistas that are now ready to build on. This boutique stage is already over 50 per cent sold with the remaining blocks ranging in size from 600 to 829sqm. “One of the most popular attributes of the estate are its elevated natural contours providing most blocks with unique views without the maintenance requirements of acreage lots,” said Mr Herden. The Honeywood estate has always been affordable and continues to be with homesites from a low $139,000, and with help from some of Queensland’s leading builders, there are a number of house and land packages available to suit all buyers starting from only $295,000. “I’m unaware of any other residential estates in South East Queensland that can offer a new 4 bedroom, 2 bathrooms and 2 car garage home on a 600sqm block for that kind of value,” said Mr Herden. You can find out more about Honeywood at Fernvale by visiting the sales and information centre in the heart of Fernvale located along the Brisbane Valley Highway, or contact the sales office on 5427 0511.

Lancer Evolution Final Edition The Lancer Evolution Final Edition has arrived in Australia, with only 150 iconic models on sale across the nation. In its tenth and final generation, the Lancer Evolution Final Edition delivers the highest engine performance in the legendary Evo series. Already known for its extraordinary performance, the Lancer Evolution Final Edition increases power to 226kW of power @6500 rpm and 414Nm of torque @3500 rpm. This has been achieved in part through the application of sodium filled exhaust valves which increases cooling efficiency, allowing the engine to generate an even higher output and improving engine performance across both middle and high rev and torque ranges. Based on a design that powered Finnish racing legend Tommi Mäkinen to four straight titles in the gruelling World Rally Championship (WRC), the turbo-charged and inter-cooled 2.0-litre
DOHC four-cylinder engine delivers instantaneous power and torque. Lancer Evolution Final Edition comes standard with a short-throw, 5-speed manual transmission. Helping protect the vehicle’s occupants in the event of an accident are Mitsubishi Motors’ patented next-generation Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) technology to help disperse energy from the cabin section as well as the fuel system and a supplemental restraint system (SRS) with occupant sensors and a total of seven airbags: a driver’s side knee airbag, two front airbags, two front seat-mounted side-impact airbags and two side curtain airbags. The Lancer Evolution Final Edition also comes with a rear view camera. With only 150 available, it is expected to sell out fast.
