Adam Harvey on ‘Fami

After starting his national tour back in January, Adam Harvey is returning to Ipswich this week for a special n Adam was last in town for the ‘CMC Rocks’ event earlier this year, and is looking forward to performing in Ipswich again, after what has been a hectic year for the country music singer, including several gigs supporting country legend Kenny Rogers. “I’ve been on the road for quite a while, nearly twelve months now, and there’s one thing I’ve learnt from touring over the years, and that’s to surround yourself with good people,” Adam told Ipswich Life. “Touring can be one of two things…a lot of fun or bloody hard work. It just takes one personality clash in the group and its like sorting out a kindergarten every day, so I’m glad it’s all going so well. I like to spread tours out and schedule breaks along the way, as it allows me to have a bit of a normal life between shows. I have a family at home, and kids at school so I need to still be a dad. “If you go on tour for too long you can often get down and depressed, as you miss the wife and kids, and I honestly think that affects your mindset and ultimately your performance on stage. Touring this way keeps me fresh, and it allows me to be at home often through

the week making lunches and taking the kids to school…just like everyone else. “To be honest I think my wife likes it more when I’m out on tour so she can get rid of me for a few days!” It’s that love of family, his sense of humour and the fact his audience can relates so well to him that has resulted in Adam’s long list of awards, including Song of the Year awards, Heritage Track of the Year and no less than eight Golden Guitar awards. One of the highlights of the last year was getting to support a legend of the industry, Kenny Rogers. “Supporting Kenny was wonderful,” Adam said. “He’s a lovely, lovely man. I’ve always been a fan of his. Every day on the tour he’d come into the dressing room and have a chat with me. By coincidence I’d just read his autobiography, and we talked a lot about that. That’s the sign of a superstar in my book… someone who takes the time for others. “I was brainwashed as a kid with country music, including Kenny Rogers, and let’s be honest, you only have to put ‘The Gambler’ on anywhere, anytime and people start to sing along. My dad had a huge collection of vinyl records and he was an encyclopaedia of the genre. Kenny is just one of so many good people I’ve met in the industry, too many to

mention. I guess the reason is that country artists tend not to be so competitive, we’re all pretty good mates. “It could be due to the fact many of us have ‘paid our dues’, all doing talent quests at Tamworth, or busking…and that gives us all a feeling of family. Many of us did that at the same time, but at the end of the day we are competitive. We all want to win awards and make a living, but it’s a friendly kind of competition.” Adam’s current album ‘Family Life’ is the theme of the tour, taking songs from the topselling album about the thing he loves the most. “My record company said it was time for a new album and I thought ‘what can I write songs about?’ I was home at the time and my two kids were getting ready for school and it dawned on me…why not write about what means the most to me? That’s ‘family’. “It came pretty easy. Rather than making a story up for a song, I just wrote from the heart. I have got such good feedback from it, people can really relate to it. I love my family, and I realise I’m very fortunate…even though my kids are in the teen phase, its like living with Justin Beiber and Miley Cyrus at my place at the moment, plus my kids don’t like country music. My daughter is doing piano and

They roll their eyes at me, but they don’t mind when we’re off on a cruise ship or travelling overseas for a show! “Country music fans are very loyal, and we are lucky in that sense. My kids see music as fashion, something’s hot one week and gone the next. But you don’t get that with country music fans. They stick by you through thick and thin. “There’s so much doom and gloom in the music industry thanks to illegal downloads, but the one thing they can’t take away is the live experience. People are under pressure financially these days, they need to escape. If they can come to a show and forget about everything for a few hours, have a laugh, then I’ve done my job! “I guarantee people will come to this show and be able to forget their worries, have a good laugh and enjoy some fantastic music. I’ve got special guests with me: The Sunny Cowgirls and Luke O’Shea, so it’s going to be something special! I can’t wait to get back to Ipswich!” Adam Harvey: Family Life Tour is on at Ipswich Civic Centre Thursday October 22 at 7.30pm. Walk for Daniel returns to Ipswich

Enviroplan Photo Competition winners announced An amazing picture of sunrise over Redbank by Murray Fox and a close up of a bush turkey by student Blake Lee frog have taken out top prizes at the 2015 Ipswich Enviroplan Photographic Competition. Congratulations to all the winners over the eight categories. Now Ipswich people can vote for their favourites in the People’s Choice category. From over 1,200 entries, 63 received an award or honourable mention, and all will be up for the People’s Choice award, decided by the public with the exhibition of the best photos at Riverlink from now until November 2. Photographers of all ages and skill levels have taken part in this challenging and exciting photographic experience. Whether it’s natural landscapes, flora, fauna, or the Bremer River, entrants have captured the natural beauty of Ipswich in surprising and creative ways. Winners were announced following lengthy deliberations by Ipswich Life’s John Armstrong and renowned photographer Michael Snedic. “I’d like to thank all the entrants who make this competition bigger and better each year,” said Cr Heather Morrow. “They have taken both time and care

to capture some remarkable photos of parts of the city we see every day but perhaps don’t take the time to appreciate often enough. “Through their lenses we have learnt more about our city and more about the animals and flora we share it with.” Winning entries can be viewed at enviroplanphotocomp.com.au or visit the display in the East Mall at Riverlink.

Ipswich locals will be able to take a walk and support child safety as part of the annual Walk for Daniel on October 30th. The walk will start in the Ipswich Mall at 10am on Friday, 30 October, travelling along Limestone, Waghorn and Brisbane streets before returning to the mall about 10.30am. Food and Day for Daniel merchandise will be available in the mall from 10.30am-12pm. Health and Community Safety Committee Chairperson Councillor Andrew Antoniolli said the walk would continue the great work of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. The event is part of a National Day of Action to raise awareness of child protection, safety and harm prevention. “Denise and Bruce Morcombe have channelled their energy and emotion into an incredible foundation that is dedicated to building safer communities for our children,” Cr Antoniolli said. “Day for Daniel aims to help empower our children to recognise, react and report if they feel something is not right.” Cr Antoniolli said Ipswich City Council was once again a proud partner of the event. “We’re very happy to support the Morcombes and in particular the walk organised by the Ipswich Community Youth Service, the Queensland Police Service and River 94.9,” he said. “The Ipswich community has rallied behind the foundation, and we’d love to see everyone out and about in the mall wearing red on the day.” All proceeds from the walk will support the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. 2015 IPSWICH ENVIROPLAN

IPSWICH

Ever wondered how the people at Baskin Robbins come up with all those flavours? Well at the opening of the new store at Riverlink recently, Ipswich Life spoke to the company’s General Manager David Jordan and picked his brains about what we all wanted to know….who thinks up these flavours? Now open at Riverlink just near Limelight Cinemas, the store had a grand opening where the first ten people through the door received free ice cream for a year. The queue began at 7pm the night before and by opening time a large crowd was ready to sample the free ice creams on offer, including Mayor Pisasale who knocked off several flavours. So while Ipswich is now ready to enjoy a premium ice cream store, David spilt the beans on the companies secret creation centre. “The flavour of the month is something special to the Baskin Robbins brand,” he said. “Truth is that we have a culinary team in the US that has 3000 square meters of space! All they do, all day, is invent ice cream flavours. I’ve never been there, but I would love to see it, I’d feel like Willy Wonka. “We pick flavours that we think will work here. Some flavours of the month are so popular in Australia that we keep them in our range. It’s hard to get a true ‘aussie’ flavour ice cream, as we are such a small part of the world market. But we get smarter and make up our own Aussie-themed sundaes instead. “This summer we have cookie sandwiches coming which are an Aussie favourite, and maybe a lamington sundae…who knows. If we can influence we will, and if we can’t we just have to be innovative!” FUN FACT: Australia is the 3rd largest consumer of Ice Cream in the world, after the USA and New Zealand! That’s 18 litres of ice cream for every person each year!

St. Mary’s expands for the future There aren’t too many schools that can proudly proclaim a State Premier as a former student but St. Mary’s College can, Queensland Premier Annastasia Palaszczuk having been a previous student at the college

It’s just one claim that St. Mary’s College can make as it prepares for a big future not just for the school, but for the students too. New facilities at the school are now open, and the school recently invited former student and Queensland Premier Annastasia Palaszczuk to see the new dance, music, graphics and science rooms at a recent Gala Dinner to celebrate the completion of the building. St. Mary’s College has a long history of teaching in the Mercy tradition, and the links with the Sisters of Mercy remain strong. In 1996 the last of the Sisters left the Convent, which is at the heart of the school grounds, but the ethos and values of the Sisters of Mercy continue to be a vital part of the college, parish

and community in Ipswich. “Emotionally and socially our students are supported, and when you have former students like Annastasia Palaszczuk, it is proof that we can help to create that leadership,” said Acting Principal Judith Finan. “We find about 65% of our students currently go onto university with about another 30% going onto other forms of vocational training. We are finding science and health have been very popular career choices in the last couple of years and St. Mary’s has a strong academic program.” The new facilities which took 18 months to complete at a cost of $9m means the school now has dedicated space to studies of

music, dance, art, graphics, science and home economics, almost doubling the amount of learning space at the school. While the school is intimately associated with the parish and St. Mary’s Primary School, students are drawn from throughout Ipswich, outer Brisbane metropolitan and rural areas, with a big transport network for easy transport. But don’t think of St.Mary’s as Ipswich based. This year the school took 32 students to New Zealand in a combined cultural and sporting tour, giving the students experiences and camaraderie that only overseas travel can deliver. The tour was organised by the school’s hard working Sports Leader, Mr Glenn Carpenter and Cultural Leader, Mr Simon Paxton.

“The aim was to enhance our relationship with other schools internationally and provide our students with an opportunity to align with other cultures,” Ms Finan said. “During our tour we played Netball against many New Zealand schools, our choir sang in various Churches and locations, plus we visited many sights and took part in all New Zealand had to offer. “St Mary’s College also have a trip to Cambodia planned for this year. This tour is a Social Justice trip where the students assist in remote, poverty stricken areas, assisting with building structures, teaching children and helping where needed,” Ms Finan said. “When your daughter walks out that door on Graduation Day, she will have had an opportunity with endless possibilities to find her gifts, and her talents in a supportive and safe environment to become the woman she wants to be,” Ms Finan said. “That’s what St. Mary’s stands for, and our reputation is built on those young women who walk out that door after their years here at St.Mary’s College.” Enrolments are now being taken for 2016 and beyond. For more information, to organise a tour of the school, or to get on the invitation list for the next open day, phone 3432 5444, email admincentre@ stmarys.qld.edu.au or visit St. Mary’s online at stmarys.qld.edu.au

Ipswich Jets fly high with key to the city The sound of Super Hornets overhead the city was drowned out by thousands of cheering fans in the Ipswich Mall as the mighty Ipswich Jets received the Key to the City from Mayor Paul Pisasale. As the all-conquering Ipswich Jets took a victory march down the Mall, the crowd screamed their congratulations, as cannons fired ticket tape overhead in a show of joy, recognising the once in a lifetime achievements of this great football team and their service as wonderful ambassadors for our city. Keiron Landers, known as “Captain Courageous” within the club said, “This is amazing, we are just blown away with what’s happening; this will go in the memory bank for anniversaries years from now when we will remember we were the first Ipswich side to take out both the Intrust Super Cup Final and the Interstate Championship. The community means a lot to us, and this event tonight shows how valued we are to the community.” Winning through the Queensland finals, then travelling to Sydney to win against the Newcastle Knights, took a lot of grit and determination. “The finals were really tough, ask anyone who plays in them,” Keiron said. “We got a great result in the Super Cup Grand Final, and we wanted to go to Sydney and represent Queensland. When we got the win there we had achieved it all.” Keiron has announced his retirement and

won’t be tempted to play another season with the Jets. “We have plenty of time to get ready for next year, there are plenty of guys in the BRL who can step up and do the job,” he said. “I definitely won’t be coming back to play but I will be there to support and mentor the new team.” Ipswich Jets CEO, Wayne Wendt, was justifiably proud of both his teams and appreciated the

great reception from the people of Ipswich. “It’s a great, great honour for the Ipswich Jets to be here on an occasion such as this, with so many people here,” he said. “It took 25 years to win another trophy, and in 25 days we won four. How good is that!” Mayor Paul Pisasale and Councillors presented the all-conquering Ipswich Jets Rugby League Club with the city’s highest honour.

“These guys did Ipswich proud on local, state and national stages, they knocked down doors to win three competitions,” Cr Pisasale said. “The Jets were the talk of the rugby league world after winning in Sydney. ‘Ipswich Jets’ was trending on Facebook and Twitter and some of the game’s greats couldn’t say enough about how entertaining and gutsy they were. It’s a great honour and privilege to recognise the club’s success with the Key to the City.” For more pictures, check out the IpswichLife Magazine facebook page facebook.com/ipswichlifemag Left: Confetti rains down onIpswich Jets players.

IGN appoints new headmaster Ipswich Grammar School is set to welcome the school’s 16th headmaster just days after celebrating 152 years educating boys in Ipswich, making IGS the oldest secondary school in the state. Richard Morrison brings 30 years of teaching experience to the role when he moves in January. Mr Morrison, 54, is currently the principal at Bremer State High School and is looking forward to getting stuck into his new job at IGS, which is part of the Great Public Schools Association of Queensland (GPS). “I have a lot of family connections with Ipswich and the school,” Mr Morrison said. “My stepson and nephews both go to IGS. I think there’s a camaraderie you get with students at boys schools, which is all from a shared set of values.” Mr Morrison has a Master of Education (Leadership and Management) from Queensland University of Technology and is currently the Principal of Bremer State High School. He has held multiple senior positions both locally and internationally, including Executive Principal of Brisbane State High School and Executive Director Student Services with Education Queensland. “I think boys need engagement, they need to be challenged, they need to have fun, and to have healthy competition…those are the kind of things they respond to. “Sport can be incredibly important to some boys but not to all of them. It’s all about finding something that gives them a challenge. All that stuff about playing as a team, doing your best…that’s the fantastic life

lesson you get from sport and education. “I hope that IGS over its history will continue to find that unique thing that each boy has, and continue to bring out their best...be it debating, chemistry or rugby. All boys have a talent which is ready to be fulfilled.” Mr Morrison began as a PE teacher at age 24, and will replace current headmaster Robert Henderson who has accepted a role as a principal at John XXIII College in Perth. “For many students university is a great pathway, but there are many people who are wealthy and famous without that education. Again, it’s our job as educators to bring out their potential.”

Hospital at Springfield to open late-2015 The final stage of construction at Mater Private Hospital Springfield is on track to enable the $85 million facility to welcome its first patients later this year. On opening, a range of surgical and medical services will be offered, ranging from general medicine to oncology and surgical procedures. Stage one includes accommodation for 64 inpatients in two wards and 15 oncology ‘pods’, four operating theatres, a day surgery unit with 16 beds, an outdoor balcony garden, medical imaging services and a cancer care centre. A unique construction feature is a wall which can be removed for future expansion effectively doubling the hospital’s size and capacity, as demand for medical services increases locally. Hospital Director Fritha Mackay said the hospital will grow to meet the needs of the region with future consideration for an Intensive Care Unit, Emergency and, importantly, Maternity, given the demographic of the Springfield region. Ms Mackay is particularly proud of the Cancer Care Centre that provides a linear accelerator for radiation treatment and 15 medical oncology bays for chemotherapy and other treatments. The centre was partially funded through a $21.4 million grant from the Australian Government. Previously, patients had to travel to Brisbane for their treatment sessions but now this can be offered locally. “One of the great things is that people don’t have to battle the traffic and find a park; our parking is right here so patients can park beside the entrance and walk right in,” Ms Mackay said. Located on the ground floor, the treatment ‘pods’ allow a measure of privacy but also enables a degree of normality in an abnormal situation. “The Centre was designed by our team who designed our Mater Cancer Care Centre at South Brisbane so they’ve taken the opportunity to improve things such as private entry, lots of natural light, the ability for patients to have their own devices, and hiding away things such as bins, so that it’s less like a hospital environment,” Ms Mackay said.

The $2 million Linear Accelerator is for patients who need to undergo radiation oncology treatment. Oncology team member, Alicia Moo, said the machine uses high X-Rays to penetrate through, to treat breast cancers, prostate cancers and lung cancers. “The patient rises up into the middle of the machine so that the radiation is delivered on the critical areas,” she said. Patients will be able to be treated with both radiation and chemotherapy through a partnership with Radiation Oncology Queensland. Medical and other staff are undergoing practical training in the lead up to the opening, organised by Mater Education, who stage ‘emergencies’ ranging from sports injuries to cardiac arrest and cancer treatment, even delivering a baby. Most in-patient accommodation comprises single rooms, each with what’s known as ‘integrated room control’, which allows the patient to control room temperature, bed controls, blinds – even phoning through a meal order from the menu, which is then cooked fresh on-site and delivered quickly, and hot. Each private room also features a fold-out bed, and family and friends can visit at any time, without restricted visiting hours. The hospital also provides significant opportunity for local employment with, close to 70 per cent of employees living in the Greater Springfield region. Next on the training agenda is a 24-hour simulation involving all aspects of hospital and medical services, which will act as a shakedown for the staff prior to opening for business. Planning is underway for future expansion of the hospital, and indications are that this will need to happen sooner rather than later, given the level of interest even now. For further information on Mater Private Hospital please visit mater.org.au/mphs.

WHAT’S NEW

WITH TIM AT THE PRINCE ALFRED HOTEL

Spoilt for Choice at Tap’d The Prince Alfred Hotel’s newest bar, Tap’d, has a whopping 72 different products on tap! Among those 72 taps a four beers that they call their ‘Feature Four’. These feature four showcase four beers from one particular brewery, and will change each month. This month’s ‘Feature Four’ come from Thunder Road Brewing Co from Brunswick, in Melbourne. Their approach brings together traditional brewing expertise with challenging new brewing methods. Unique and bold on one hand, classical and restrained on the other. Full Steam is a pale helles German style lager with a clean, pure, crisp malty profile, a subtle hint of wheatiness, a surprisingly rich texture and zippy German hops. Thunder Road have taken the finest ingredients in the world and made something that tastes like a lager you dream to drink, only better. Next is Thunder Road’s Collingwood Draught. A bronze coloured amber lager with a malty aroma and a subtle toasty palate. A dash of the finest hops gives this

refreshing beer a superb, clean finish. When you’re seeking a sense of balance and its time to shout your mates. This beer was recently awarded a gold medal at the recent Australian International Beer Awards and in this writer’s personal opinion perfection in a glass. Pacific Ale is a relatively new beer style which has increased in popularity since 2001. Thunder Road’s Pacific Ale is characterised by distinct hop aroma with pineapple, passionfruit and citrus notes. Light bodied, refreshing with a tropical hop character it is the perfect beer to get you through a long, hot summer. Finally, we have Thunder Road’s Hop Star Extra Pale Ale. Delightfully aromatic with complex yet refreshing flavours. It’s refreshing bold aroma shouts hop field freshness. The flavours deliver a mildly spice and citrus/passion-fruit hint. A proudly full flavoured beer that expertly balances strong hop aroma and drinkability. Thirsty yet? These four beers are pouring right now at Tap’d. Cheers, Tim

With the third annual Kitsch in the Swich, Vintage and Rockabilly Fashion Fiesta marking the event’s most successful year yet, Ipswich City Square delves into our ongoing love of all things retro, Rockabilly and kitsch to find out why this trend just keeps on keeping on. Check out these beautiful retro inspired pieces available from Ipswich City Square retailers.

Why we love vintage and retro... Let’s face it, the vintage and Rockabilly fashion and lifestyle trend is soaring in popularity all over the globe, and this growing love of all things mid-century doesn’t look like it’s going to slow down any time soon. And it’s not just the pretty petticoats and feminine frocks that are grabbing our attention; the number of people worldwide who are adding a retro fair to their renovations is skyrocketing. Go into any homewares store or fashion retailer this season and prepare for a serious blast from the past, as everything from radios to rugs seems to have had a kitsch makeover. So what’s the appeal? Why are we all so enamoured of the past and what is it about the world of yesterday that makes us feel so good? 1. It’s a well-known fact that nostalgia can make us feel good. This is particularly true when the world around us seems less than stable, thanks to a tough economy, growing environmental concerns and social upheaval, (and a world where we are bombarded with insta-celebs like the Kardashians. It’s bewildering, it’s exhausting and frankly, we’d prefer flamingos to famous-for-no-good-reason-families). 2. There’s an innate part of us that looks back to the past with rose-coloured glasses, and the bright, pretty colours, idealised lifestyle and feminine fashions of the 50s can feel extremely comforting. It reminds us of our childhoods, of hearing happy stories from our grandparents’ hey-day, and of feeling safe and nurtured in an often confronting modern world. 3. There is something incredibly satisfying about finding unique and beautiful pieces in the most unlikely places like garage sales, flea markets and op-shops. (You will need to be prepared to sort a LOT of trash from the few hidden treasures, but a great find makes it all worthwhile.) 4. It’s fun to create your own individual look with upcycled fashions, especially when you know that no one else will be wearing it! 5. There’s something really special about wearing clothes that have their own stories. The vintage prom dress you picked up for a few dollars was probably at an actual prom in the 50s! Imagine the tales it could tell??

Spring has sprung at Limestone Dental At Limestone Dental Group, one of our most talked about features would be our lovely gardens. The current practice was built in the 1970’s and was architecturally designed to have courtyards outside each of the surgeries. Each courtyard is unique and some courtyards will also house plants or ornaments that some of our patients kindly contribute. Dr Ian Lupton and his wife, Jenny, began nurturing our gardens in 1988 aiming to bring nature into our dental practice. Now, many of the surgeries at our practice boast a calming outlook into a private courtyard. Dr Julia Tran and Dr Aaron McMurtrie regularly purchase new plants and flowers for our garden while

many of Dr Chris Raymont’s patients as well as other generous patients have kindly provided plants to the surgery. Our maintenance staff, Grant and Helen, continue the daily love and care of these ever blooming gardens and if you are here early enough you can even hear Grant

Iconic Kitsch: 1. Nothing screams “kitsch” like bright red appliances, vivid yellow kitchens, shocking pink bathrooms and the bright, unearthly green of AstroTurf. Give your home a 1950s feel with some out there paint schemes and retro pieces. 2. In the 1950s, space was considered the next great frontier, with everyone from architects to furniture designers to graphic artists embracing the atomic starburst, space-age shapes and futuristic lines. 3. Kitsch style fans loves a motif, and some of our favourites include pink flamingos, pineapples, cherries, cupcakes, Hawaiian and Tiki.

Retro vs Rockabilly what’s the difference? Retro, vintage and kitsch tend more toward the authentic 1940s/50s/60s pieces and a true vintage aficionado will look as though they’ve actually travelled through time straight from a mid-century photo. Rockabilly on the other hand is an edgier version of retro that grew from the classic car and hot-rod culture (often referred to as kustom kulture) as well as the emergence of bluegrass and Rockabilly music. The trend is also a great advocate of body art, with many Rockabilly babes sporting inked versions of pinups, cupcakes, burlesque and cars.

Dangerous curves ahead... One of the key reasons for a growing love of retro fashion is its ability to look fabulously sexy on every body shape and size. No matter what your body type, there’s a gorgeous retro or Rockabilly piece to flatter every curve. At a time when an average model is a size 6, and women worldwide are becoming more fed up with unattainable body goals or the ugly new trend of ‘fat-shaming’, it’s incredibly liberating to be able to channel your inner Marilyn Monroe or Betty Grable - two of the world’s most famously beautiful women - with full-skirts, sexy wiggle dresses and beautifully scooped necklines that celebrate the female shape.

Standing the test of time... Fabulous style isn’t the only reason to buy vintage. In the 1940s and 50s, without the existence of 21st century mass-production, clothes and homewares were built to stand the test of time. Products were made using the best materials available and whether you were buying a dress or a washing machine, you knew that it was made to last. Many of the authentic vintage pieces available today are just as beautiful as they were over half a century ago, plus it’s far more eco-friendly to upcycle than to produce. It was also far more expensive to buy clothes, so people took extra care to maintain their wardrobes – a major bonus for the vintage shoppers of today. Music from this era has also remained hugely popular. In the case of swing music, there’s been a major resurgence in swing dancing clubs and events. Similarly, 1950s rock’n’roll continues to appeal to a diverse audience of all ages.

singing to the plants! Spring has certainly sprung this year, with a myriad of interesting plants in full bloom. As a result of the suggestions from some patients, we have increased our hanging baskets plant varieties to include more flowering plants. Our lovely gardens are one of the most talked about features of our practice with comments from our patients every day. Some have even mentioned “Ipswich has it’s very own carnival of flowers”. Here at Limestone Dental Group, we are very proud of our unique and beautiful gardens. Nothing pleases us more than to see that our hard work and nurturing helps to make our patients feel calm and comfortable during their visit to us. Ipswich Life 13

Catholic schools a firm favourite for families With places quickly filling in Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) schools, now is the time for parents to think about enrolling for 2016. Significant growth in enrolments over the past 10 years indicated the value families placed upon a faith-based, high quality education for their children. More than 72,000 students filled classrooms at the beginning of 2015, in 137 Brisbane Catholic Education (BCE) schools across Brisbane archdiocese, which covers metropolitan Brisbane, the Gold and Sunshine coasts, west to the South Burnett and north to Childers. Catholic schools now educate almost one in five Queensland children across Queensland and working closely with local Catholic parishes, are an important face of the Church to young families seeking support in their challenging work of parenting and educating their children. Founded on Christ and firmly focused on the challenges of the 21st century, our committed staff ensured all Catholic families, regardless of their financial situation, are welcome. Those of different cultural backgrounds

and faith traditions are made to feel at home and every student is given the opportunity to experience success by reaching their full potential in all aspects of school life. Working closely with parishes and communities, Catholic schools are the face of the Church to young families seeking support for their challenging work of parenting and educating in faith and values. BCE Executive Director Pam Betts said the significant growth in enrolments over the past 10 years indicated the value families placed upon a faith-based, high quality, affordable education for their children. “Parents are attracted to the faith-based ethos of our schools and the feeling of being a part of this experience is a major motivator in parental selection of education for their sons and daughters,” she said. For more information about a Catholic school near you or an enrolment pack visit www.brisbanecatholicschools.com.au or call (07) 3033 7000. A True Story of The Great Escape

By Louise Williams The first book to tell the story of an Australian POW in the famous Great Escape from Stalag Luft III in World War II. Shot down in 1942, young Australian fighter pilot John Williams DFC became a POW in the notorious camp in Germany. John and his best mate Rusty Kierath were among the 76 POWs who tunnelled their way out of the supposedly escape-proof camp under the noses of their German guards in what later became the Hollywood blockbuster, The Great Escape. John’s niece Louise Williams has pieced together his life, from his upbringing in a tight-knit family hit hard by the Depression, to his exploits in the air, and the many missing details of the tragic escape. It is a powerful and intimate story of one of the most dramatic episodes of World War II. (Allen & Unwin) CODE WORD: ‘ESCAPE’

The Man Who Saved Smithy

By Rick Searle Patrick Gordon ‘Bill’ Taylor was a pioneer of aviation. As a fighter pilot during the First World War, he was awarded the Military Cross and discovered a life-long passion for flight and air navigation. Returning to Australia after the war, he became a close friend of Charles Kingsford Smith; they went on to form an incredible flying partnership, setting records around the globe. It was on a flight across the Tasman in Smithy’s famous Southern Cross that Taylor earned the Empire’s highest award for civilian bravery, the George Cross. With one engine out of action and another fast running out of oil, Taylor repeatedly climbed out of the cockpit to transfer oil to the stricken engine and keep the Southern Cross flying - all this while suspended over the sea in a howling slipstream. Cunnamulla students visit RAAF Amberley Indigenous high school students from the western Queensland town of Cunnamulla recently paid a visit to RAAF Amberley as part of a project to inspire and create pathways for a career choice. Project Imba was founded by 4th year QUT Law and Justice students Allison Boland and Corey Curran, and works over two phases for the students. Phase one delivers a series of academic, cultural and social workshops in Cunnamulla. It was held over the July school holidays and 40 students engaged in the sessions. Phase two delivered a travel excursion to QUT for the Cunnamulla students to experience and learn about university life. Seventeen students participated in the program. This is the second year Project Imba has been running. The visit to RAAF Amberley was organized by QUT’s Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and the students spent a full day on base, introducing the concept that working on base can create a host of job opportunities. The day’s activities included: • Visiting the Air Traffic Control Operations • Session with the fire fighters • Visit to the Military working dogs • Visiting the Amberley Health Centre • A tour of a C-17 Globemaster aircraft (for many, the highlight of the day)

HISTORY SNIPPETS The Coal King and his Castle

Feels like home at Honeywood Fernvale! More than 300 families now call the Honeywood Estate home and it is easy to see why. The Honeywood estate features large traditional sized blocks with peaceful views of the mountain ranges and surrounding rural landscapes. Set in the beautiful Brisbane Valley township of Fernvale you will never want to leave with number of shopping outlets and a vibrant café scene with Brisbane and Ipswich only a short distance away.
Honeywood is one of the rare modern estates that offers traditional sized (600m2 plus) building blocks enabling families to grow and accommodate other things on the property such as sheds, pools and the like. Most blocks also have beautiful scenic views of the mountain ranges and surrounding countryside.
“Buyers at Honeywood do not want to settle for a small block and they don’t need to. Honeywood has large traditional blocks with big back yards on offer while being close to all the benefits of an established community. Honeywood is on the doorstep of a new shopping precinct and centre of town. With its picturesque surroundings and views you almost can’t believe you are only 20 minutes from Ipswich CBD and the Amberley Air Base. Why settle for a small block,” said Honeywood Estate Manager

20 Ipswich Life

Jarod Herden. Honeywood’s latest release features only 28 elevated homesites with stunning mountain views and rural vistas that are now ready to build on. This boutique stage is already over 50 per cent sold with the remaining blocks ranging in size from 600 to 829sqm. “One of the most popular attributes of the estate are its elevated natural contours providing most blocks with unique views without the maintenance requirements of acreage lots,” said Mr Herden. The Honeywood estate has always been affordable and continues to be with homesites from a low $139,000, and with help from some of Queensland’s leading builders, there are a number of house and land packages available to suit all buyers starting from only $295,000.
“I’m unaware of any other residential estates in South East Queensland that can offer a new 4 bedroom, 2 bathrooms and 2 car garage home on a 600sqm block for that kind of value,” said Mr Herden. You can find out more about Honeywood at Fernvale by visiting the sales and information centre in the heart of Fernvale located along the Brisbane Valley Highway, or contact the sales office on 5427 0511.

Welsh-born Lewis Thomas made his way to Ipswich in 1866 and became an industrious coal miner known as The Coal King. Lewis was the owner of Aberdare Colliery at Blackstone and also worked a mine at Dinmore and outcrop deposits at Tivoli. He was also the Minister for Bundamba from 1893 to 1899 and part of the Queensland Legislative Council from 1902 until his death in 1913. In 1886 Lewis decided to build a home on land near his Blackstone mines - a grand castle which he named Brynhyfryd (Welsh for ‘pleasant view’). Built of handmade local bricks with a cedar timber interior Brynhyfryd was three stories high with a basement, tower, library and billiard room and magnificent gardens featuring exotic flowers, palms and fruit trees. Brynhyfryd also had the very latest conveniences installed including a hydraulic lift believed to be used for moving food and small items up and down between floors as well as its own generator to run electric lights. On a clear day it was said that sailing ships on Moreton Bay could be seen from the castle tower.

Brynhyfryd was completely finished in 1890. Lewis Thomas passed away in 1913. In 1936 Brynhyfryd was sold as well as the coal rights for the land under and around it. The castle was soon demolished as the structure and land became unstable due to undermining, explosions and subsidence. By 1973 Brynhyfryd was completely gone and the hill was bulldozed by private developers. In late 2014 the Ipswich community became the proud owner of the historical castle site after council had purchased the site on Blackstone Hill for inclusion in Ipswich’s open space network. Members of the community with photographs of Ipswich and its suburbs, whether sporting photos, leisure, families, businesses or houses can contact the Ipswich Libraries’ Digital Archivist on 3810 7272 or email pictureipswich@library.ipswich.qld.gov.au. The photographs are scanned and returned. To view the almost 12,000 photographs on the Picture Ipswich website go to picture.ipswich.qld.gov.au

Queensland house prices unlikely to fall suddenly The property market in southeast Queensland is steadily improving and all the latest data supports ongoing, consistent capital growth, the REIQ said last week. REIQ CEO Antonia Mercorella said sudden slumps were unlikely and any predictions of dramatic house price drops were nothing more than “crystal ball gazing”. “The Brisbane median house price reached a new high of $610,000 in the June quarter following a trend of positive growth of around two percent since the June quarter of 2013,” Ms Mercorella said. “Our data suggests that this trend will continue for the September quarter,” she said. In Queensland, the average home loan is $319,328 compared with New South Wales’ average of $422,179 and Victoria’s average of $365,265, according to ABS data. “In Queensland, the average proportion of family income used to repay a mortgage is 27.3 percent, compared with 35.5 percent in New South Wales and 32.1 percent in Victoria, according to REIA data. “Household debt levels are just not comparable between Queensland and

the southern states,” Ms Mercorella said. “Our housing conditions are vastly different and our housing is far more affordable,” she said. Predictions of house prices dropping are arguably based on conditions in Sydney where the average house price is around $1 million. In metropolitan Brisbane the median house price is $610,000 and in Greater Brisbane, the median house price is $479,000, according to the REIQ Queensland Market Monitor, June quarter report. Future rate rises do need to be taken into account however it is clear from the data that Queensland homeowners, on average, are well placed to keep pace with this. “The reality is that the Queensland property market is increasing in value, in small, steady increments. “We are not seeing a boom and bust cycle here and it is clear that some observers are mistaking the Sydney and Melbourne markets as indicative of the rest of the country. “The fact is, those two markets are outliers and in no way do they match the conditions in the rest of the country,” she said. HiLux gets even tougher Australia’s favourite ute Toyota HiLux is set to take its “unbreakable” DNA to new heights with the world premiere of an even tougher next-generation model.

VW Amarok up to the task No matter what you need from your ute, the VW Amarok has you covered, and it’s no surprise to people in the industry that the Amarok was named best ute of 2014 by Delivery Magazine. The Amarok can climb almost every mountain and carry your load at the same time: a trailer load of 3 tonnes is not a problem even at a 12% incline. Even when loaded with 1t, the Amarok can conquer hills of a 100% (45degree) incline. However tough your work may be, nothing will shake you in the Amarok. The comfortable interior has equipment and attention to detail that you would expect in any Volkswagen passenger vehicle. The Amarok features comfortable seating, highquality workmanship and materials, plenty of head and leg room, with low interior noise levels, multifuntional steering wheel and ergonomical features. The Amarok doesn’t just have a lot of character on the outside, there’s plenty of personality under the bonnet too: either the economical TDI340 with 103kW and 340Nm or the TDI400/ TDI420 BiTurbo with up to 132kW and 420Nm of torque - each

equipped with innovative common rail technology. With the widest load tray in its class, the new Amarok can pretty much swallow anything. The whopping 1,222mm between the wheel arches makes it the only dual-cab ute in Australia that can accommodate a full-size pallet. The Amarok will take the brunt of the most extreme workloads. The Volkswagen Amarok has added another trophy to its collection of local and international awards with the announcement of the Delivery magazine Best Ute of 2014. This highly-coveted Australian award specifically recognised the Amarok range equipped with an eight-speed automatic transmission, which was first introduced into the Australian market in 2012; making the Amarok the first ute in Australia with an eight-speed automatic transmission. To organize a test drive, or to see the Amarok in action for yourself, contact Boettcher Volkswagon on 3282 2722 or visit online at www.vwianboettcher. com.au

The global unveiling, staged simultaneously in Australia and Thailand, has taken the wraps off the eighth generation of a nameplate with a famed 47-year pedigree. While the new HiLux is even tougher than its predecessor, the latest workhorse also features advanced comfort, safety and convenience – and is easier to drive than ever. New HiLux expands the model’s legendary prowess with an even stronger frame, four powerplants including two new high-torque turbo-diesel engines, increased towing capacity up to 3.5 tonnes~ and payloads of up to 1240kg. Toyota Australia’s executive director sales and marketing Tony Cramb said the first all-new HiLux since 2005 redefines the “unbreakable” tag. “The introduction of an even stronger frame, new engines, greater off-road ability and car-like features ensures the nextgeneration HiLux combines the best features of a workhorse ute and a SUV.” For more information on the new Toyota HiLux, contact Llewellyn Toyota on 3282 2922.
