PUMPED TO BE IN IP

For a bloke who has been doing stand up comedy gigs around the country since he firs 22 years ago in Perth, Dave Hughes is pumped. Really pumped. He can’t wait to get to Ipswich for the very first time and bring his unique brand of humour to the Ipswich Civic Centre on September 3. Best known for his work on Rove Live, Before the Game, The Project and numerous other shows, Hughesy is keen

to get to ‘The Swich’ as he simply loves being on stage. “Its my first time in Ipswich to be honest,” Hughesy said. “I’ve been all over Queensland but never to Ipswich, and I’m really looking forward to it. “It’s definitely worth playing regional areas, because per capita you get a big percentage of the town come to the shows. If I had that kind of attendance in the capital cities I’d be able to fly to these places in my own jet.” Hughesy spent over a decade doing breakfast radio and only in the last couple of years was convinced to do it again (‘Hughesy & Kate’ is on afternoons around the nation) on the grounds that his employers understood that his stand up came first. “When I agreed to come back and do some radio I told them I loved stand up, that was the priority for me. Luckily we have networks and stations all over the place so I can do the radio show from anywhere basically. “It’s not weird being there on my own, sometimes I have a Skype screen so I can see

everyone, and often it’s better as there are less distractions…but of course I don’t want to do a national radio show that way all the time. “I did breakfast radio for over 12 years, but I love stand up. I didn’t want to get to the point where I’d do a show and think ‘Oh boy I’m gonna pay for this tomorrow’, so the afternoon shift is really suiting me. “The good thing about regional areas is I love using local references, like when you’re in Ipswich for example, walking around, seeing what you can see, talking to people and then thinking ‘I can make that work’. “Then you get on stage that night and when you get a big laugh off a crowd for that, it shows they appreciate the effort. I get annoyed when I see comics come to Australia and they haven’t taken one second to look around where they are.” For all his TV and radio commitments, Dave’s greatest love is performing and will gladly do it anytime, anywhere. “I never stopped doing stand up to be honest, but to go back and concentrate on it

fully has been great. I just love it. I can spend a couple of weeks at home and I just want to get back on stage. “I could be talking to forty people in a pub and I’ll still love it. When a new bit of material works it’s such a thrill and that never changes. “Most of my stuff is on the smartphone…I make notes all the time, but to be honest performing is the best place to work on stuff. It gives you focus. I might do some old things now and again, and may have never expanded yet on those ideas. The way I see it, you have to strive to be better all the time. “I get a wide range of ages to my gigs, these days I get seven year olds upwards…it’s good to appeal to such a varied range of fans.” ‘Dave Hughes is Pumped’ is on at Ipswich Civic Centre for one show only on September 3rd. Tickets are still available at www.ipswichciviccentre.com.au

TIME TO START SHOOTING IpswichLife is proud to sponsor the Ipswich Enviroplan Photographic Competition. Each issue until closing date Ipswich Life will feature some of the best pics from previous years and find out the story behind the photo. This issue we speak with Josh Aberdeen who loves to take his camera out and about with him. Josh’s photo ‘Waiting’ won the 2014 Secondary Student Native Bird category and also took out the Student People’s Choice award. Josh, a student at St. Peter’s Lutheran College heard about the contest through a teacher who runs the school’s photography club, and the 13 year old has been a keen photographer for quite a while. “At the club at school the teachers show us photography techniques,” Josh said. “Sometimes we go out on field excursions to take photos which is great. “I haven’t always been into photography, but I did get into it after I won a competition at school with a photo I took of a clump of Cactii. “For ‘Waiting’ I was out at Springfield Lakes one day with my family riding my bike

around the lake and saw this pipe sticking out of the water. I just thought it looked really cool, as it had a kind of industrial look to it. “I took a photo but I came back later and there were some ducks on it,so I just thought it would make a really good shot. “I went along to the Enviroplan presentation night, which was heaps of fun. When my name got called out it was awesome” Josh said. “I’m going away for a few weeks to go to Ironbark for school. Lots of hiking and farm work, so that will be be good, but sadly I can’t enter the Enviroplan contest this year, but I plan to next year. “I use a Canon 7D SLR…you can do so much with it. I love taking pics of wildlife and landscapes. I live in Kenmore so there’s lots of good spots to take photos around my suburb. “There’s still time to enter the competition so get your camera out and start shooting.”

There aren’t too many businesses who can p celebrat The business has grown quite a lot in size since it was started back in 1955. Vic Vermeer started sharpening tools, handsaws and hand mowers after work, and then left his job at Scott’s Engineering to start his own business. He rented a shop on the Terrace, North Ipswich (next to the Strand Hotel) for two pounds a week - operating under the name ‘Vermeer’s Sharpening Service’. Vic’s son Jon began his apprenticeship in 1979 before taking over the family business with wife Karen in 1991, and

they’ve been running the business ever since. Ipswich Mower & Saw Service has undergone a number of moves over the years, enjoying stints at West Ipswich, Cooney Street, and Turley Street before moving to the current and biggest premises on Warwick Road. “With all the development out here in Yamanto we felt the time was right to get ready for the next generation of customers,” said owner Jon Vermeer. “We’re doing the renovations later this year to give our loyal customers an even bigger range of mowers, chainsaws, trimmers, rideons, washers, vacuums, parts and of course our big workshop where we fix all brands of machinery here on site. “We sell all the best brands including Stihl, Rover, Cox, Toro, Victa and Atom to name a few. Plus our customers can be safe in the knowledge that we are authorized service agents for all those brands, so we can offer back up service for everything we sell,” Jon said. “All our service work is guaranteed for a month after it leaves the workshop, and if you have a mower that needs servicing, now is a good time to get it done before the predicted long hot summer gets here.

Invitation to opening of Congregational Church in Brisbane Street, 1855 On 11 March 1855, this first Congregational Church building was opened in Brisbane Street (opposite Wharf Street). When a new chapel was built on the site in 1871, the first church became the Sunday school. FDG Stanley was the architect of the building and the church land went through to Limestone St. The flood of 1893 submerged the chapel and caused the Sunday school building to collapse completely, so the Sunday school moved to higher ground in East St. The foundation stone was laid for what is said to be the “largest, best and best-adapted Sunday School building in the southern hemisphere.” The new Sunday school cost £4000 and was

proudly say they’ve been around for sixty years, but one that can is Ipswich Mower and Saw Service in Yamanto, and they are ting by getting ready for the next sixty years as they undergo renovations later this year.

“You can get a mower from a hardware store or supermarket, but when you get one from Ipswich Mower and Saw Service, we will put it together, check the oil, give it a test and make sure everything is running so when you get it home you know it has met our high standards.

“We also sharpen saw chains, either on or off the saw, along with sharpening of blades, cutters, knives, and circular saw blades although not as much of the later now that dad has retired, that was his job. “If you need a service done, simply bring your equipment into our store, and we will book it

in on the spot and let you know approximately how long it will take. “We need to move with the times in Yamanto, there are so many businesses opening up here on Warwick Road, and we’ve grown along with the area. We used to be a small mower shop and now we’ve become a one stop shop for the whole region,” Jon said. “We are getting customers from every corner of Ipswich and beyond now, plus if you need your ride-on serviced don’t worry, we can organize pickup and delivery for you if you need it for a small fee.” Ipswich Mower & Saw Service specialises in the sales and servicing of the Stihl brand of power equipment as well as sharpening of tools and repairing most brands of mowers, chainsaws and brush cutters. “We are Ipswich’s official dealership for Stihl Chainsaws and Outdoor Equipment, as well as selling a wide range of outdoor equipment including such brands as Atom, Big Dog, Briggs & Stratton, Bush Hog, Cox, Craftsman, Dunlite, Hansa, Masport, MTD, Rover, Toro, Victa, Westinghouse, and many other brands. “We have customers who used to deal with dad, and now the next generation comes to

us for their mower and cutter needs,” Jon said. “Now we are looking forward to welcoming third generation customers who appreciate our no-nonsense approach to business. What you see is what you get with us and we’re all about getting your machinery working first time, every time!” You can’t miss Ipswich Mower and Saw Service, they are on Warwick Road, Yamanto. It’s fun to be a Spartan The Ivory Rock Conference Centre at Peak Crossing was once again the location for 14km of tough and muddy fun for people from all over SEQ for the annual ‘Spartan Race’.

Ipswich Jets player Carlin Anderson is set for big things in the NRL, and plans to continue Ipswich’s tradition of churning out great Rugby League players. The 19 year old has signed up to play with the Brisbane Broncos next year, and is looking forward to the pre-season later this year which will take his training to a new level. The backliner scored 11 tries in 18 games in his debut year, making a name for himself with his footwork and his scoring abilities. Sitting in the shadow of a portrait of Alfie Langer, Carlin spoke to Ipswich Life about his plans for the future, and what it feels like to have five NRL clubs chasing your signature. “I grew up in Gympie and until I was about 12 I was focused on soccer and cricket,” Carlin said. “I moved to Ipswich and as a student at Ipswich Grammar I started to play Rugby Union, plus was selected in the Australia A team but due to a shoulder injury I didn’t get to play. “Once I finished high school I really wanted to give Rugby League a good crack, so I signed up with the Under 20’s at Jets, played pretty good and I’ve been here for over 18 months now. “I had been talking to some Union clubs, but I was drawn to League, and before I knew it I had several clubs after my signature. But all along I’ve been a Broncos fan, and I wanted to learn under Wayne Bennett…he’s the best in the business. “So later this year I’ll be doing the preseason with the Broncos and start my one year contract. I did the pre-season with them last year and it’s such a great setup. All your food is planned, you are measured constantly…it’s your job to be a professional sportsman, so I stripped off a

few kilos and added some muscle, simply just tried to train as hard as I possibly could.” A proud Queenslander, Carlin wanted to put his signature to a team he’d watched on his whole life. “It was a bit daunting having all those clubs after my signature, and I was over the moon…but truth was I’d always wanted to be a Bronco. I believe in loyalty. Here I am sitting in the shadow of Alfie Langer and if I could be half as good as him that would be awesome. “I think training in the sheds at Jets in North Ipswich has set me up. It’s tough training, especially in summer,” Carlin said. “You have to get up and do things for yourself, and that’s taught me a good work ethic. At the Broncos you have so many people there helping you out, it’s a big club. “So many people have helped me out in Ipswich, especially Ben and Shane Walker, they’ve given me so much confidence not only in my footy, but in life too. “I’ve learnt from them so many life skills. I’m told every day to keep going, to go hard and this is what you have to do to make it. People like that in the team I look up to, which keeps me grounded.” By day, Carlin is an Indigenous Sport Recreation Office for Ipswich City Council, and is in the process of setting up a training program for local youth. “My sporting hero is probably Greg Inglis. I like his story, same with Johnathon Thurston. To have the chance to play against those guys would be awesome,” Carlin said. “I’d love to just shake their hands....after the game of course!”

When you’re in the business of ‘business’, Ipswich Corporate Offices (ICO) know that being a member of the Ipswich Chamber of Commerce and Industry is vital. They are in the business of offering office space for a day, a week, a month or more to businesses who don’t have the need or finances to rent their own location. Joining the Chamber of Commerce this year, and after sprucing up the building at 16 East Street both inside and out, ICO is a family owned business that uses Chamber meetings to reach small businesses, who they want to help succeed, which then becomes a win/win for everyone. “We also offer additional packages which include secretarial services, bookkeeping and the use of our onsite boardroom or private meeting rooms,” said ICO’s Jenny Sayle. “We are always trying to build the profile our building, which is one of the most recognised in Ipswich. Mary Poppins is on her way!

Kickstarting the Ipswich Digital Community

The Supercalifragilistic Broadway Musical arrives for strictly limited season. Ipswich Musical Theatre Company (IMTC), which last year brought us the spectacular ‘Phantom of the Opera’, is getting ready for its biggest production yet! Mary Poppins, the Supercalifragilistic Broadway Musical, based on the stories of P.L.Travers and the Walt Disney film, flies into Ipswich for a strictly limited season. With exhilarating dance numbers, astonishing stagecraft, a little bit of magic and the unforgettable songs, this musical soars high above the rest, literally taking community theatre to new heights, as the high-flying nanny transports audiences on magical adventures. Set in London in 1910, this iconic musical tells the irresistible story of the dysfunctional upper middle-class Banks family. Mary flies in after the children write their own advertisement, ‘Perfect Nanny’. Mary is ‘Practically Perfect’. She takes the children, Jane and Michael, on magical journeys. Mary and the cast sprinkle happiness with unforgettable songs we love to sing: ‘Jolly Holiday’, ‘Spoonful of Sugar’, ‘Feed the Birds’, ‘Chim Chim Cher-ee’, ‘Let’s Go Fly a Kite’, ‘Step in Time’ and ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious’! Ipswich’s Lauren Roche plays the lead role of Mary Poppins

and Simon Drew, also from Ipswich, plays the charming song and dance man, Bert. Director/choreographer is Ruth Gabriel, who has directed three shows for IMTC. “There is nothing like the experience of a live performance”, said Musical Director, Brenda Ryan. “The magic unfolds before your eyes. The statues in the park come alive. Angry toys stake their revenge on Jane and Michael. The fabulous ‘Step in Time’ tap-number, boggles your senses, as does the manic ‘Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious!” Mary Poppins, the Broadway Musical, is on for 5 performances only: Sat. Sept 12 at 7:30pm; Sun 13 Sept at 1:30pm; Fri Sept 18 at 7:30pm; Sat 19 at 7:30pm and Sun Sept 20 at 1:30pm. For bookings phone 3810 6100 or online at www.ipswichciviccentre.com.au

BY TIM BUTLER, CONETIX, IPSWICH

With the digital economy in Australia now worth nearly $80 billion already and set to double by 2020, its impact on business and community life cannot be ignored. As technology booms, even non-technical job environments are going to change rapidly through the use of technology. Just one example, driverless cars started trials here in Australia only a month ago, and the companies developing components and software for these technologies are being rapidly acquired or licensed by companies such as GM, Apple and Google. Already the driverless vehicle industry is worth billions of dollars per year. Recently, the Ipswich City Council started a long term program to convert the Ipswich region into a digital hub for startups and technologists. This region could be a great location for digital startups and technology-focused companies. With a lower cost of living compared with Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, along with readily available NBN access and a council committed to the task, Ipswich has the required precursors for the region to become a major tech hub in Australia. However, this requires strong support from technology-based universities, so Ipswich needs to push even harder in order to kickstart a digital economy sector locally. It’s a classic chicken and egg story: to bring digital innovators to the region there needs to be a baseline digital system there for them; that “system” needs to include other like-minded companies and innovators to engage in consolidation, communication, cooperation and consultation. These stakeholders need this one-team approach to succeed, so the big question is how to kickstart the digital economy locally, to attract these initial ‘techo-seeders’. This is by no means a trivial task. In my very first full-time job in 1999 I worked for a venture capital backed company in Toowoomba. It was exciting work knowing that we were pioneers, setting the standards and changing the way things worked for online education. Being first to market provided great growth but unfortunately as the ‘dot-com’ bubble burst, the company folded, once the venture capital was pulled out. Now working for Conetix, an Ipswich based cloud hosting company, I’m again seeing the excitement of being first to market with a number of emerging technologies. Unlike other industries, we need to remain at the forefront of technology. In fact as the whole marketplace booms, we need to be two steps in front of the latest trends, which isn’t easy when you need to maintain the legacy systems as well. It’s going to be hard to measure any success in the short term for Ipswich. This is a project that needs at least five years planning and hard work to come to fruition. Even with highly skilled staff and leadership, there’s still no guarantee of success. As someone who is technology driven and enjoys a challenge, I’m looking forward to providing input and mentorship to help guide Ipswich well into the digital economy. In the end though the proof will be in the pudding. The investments of time and money by all involved need to produce tangible results. He’s bringing his considerable reputation and boundless knowledge as a judge to the Ipswich Fashion Festival Gala on September 25th at the Ipswich Civic Centre. Dmitri this year won the award for ‘Australian Hairdresser of the Year’, and his hair salon ‘Papas+Pace’ in Ann Street in the Brisbane CBD has a reputation for excellence that has seen Dmitri and his business partner Justin Pace often featured in style magazines and newspapers across the state. But funnily enough, it was an industry that Dmitri fell into. He studied marketing after leaving school still not really sure what he wanted to do. Sometimes you can simply come across an industry that you fall in love with purely by accident, as Dmitri told Ipswich Life. “I was studying at QUT and I was over it within about 7 months,” Dmitri said. “You know when you finish school and find everyone else is studying? I thought ‘what am I doing’ and I ended doing work experience in a hair salon on Saturdays in a place where my mum got her haircut. They asked me to come in to help out, then asked to do more hours, and then eventually asked me if I was keen on an apprenticeship. “I took two weeks off studying to see if I’d like it, and I’ve never looked back.” While crediting his parents with helping him,

(his mother Sophie spent over 35 years in the industry), Dmitri loves the fact that he can make people feel different about themselves in a short space of time. “I think I just love the clients, I love the fashion, and just making people feel good. I love the fact that in a couple of hours I can transform someone’s life.

“When someone comes to me, I try to asses who they are, what their lifestyle is, and what they can do at home with their hair. I make sure I understand them first, and what suits them. “I once said that I see the client as the conductor of an orchestra, and I’m the lead violinist. People want individuality and they have me there to bring out their best. Many

people think that a hairdresser will say ‘you’re having this done’ and that’s that, but it isn’t and shouldn’t be the case. That’s where we win and get better results for clients. It’s all about that understanding.” While Dmitri and Justin spend most of their time working in and on their business, they are also passionate about sharing knowledge. “We are always educating. We spend out time on the floor, training staff, and we have to find that balance from being on the floor, along with working on the business. If you get sick of doing hair, you need to make sure you have a strong business there, and you don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket. “We have a massive loyal client base, and it covers all ages. People can’t believe we do everything from 80 year olds, down to young kids. “I hear all the time how tough it is out there in the industry, but I think what makes us stand out is that we have always stayed focussed on quality work, and delivering our clients results. “I think what got me over the line this year was giving the judges a good photographic collection. The photos showed real people, with real hair, and that’s what we’re about.” Dmitri Papas is one of the guest judges at the Ipswich Fashion Festival Gala on September 25 at the Ipswich Civic Centre. 700 jobs on offer Orion Springfield Central has come up with a unique way to fill an estimated 700 vacancies due to the Stage 2 expansion of the popular shopping centre. The new stage is set to open later this year and will include Coles, Target, Event Cinemas, JB Hi-Fi, Orion Hotel and an additional 60 specialty retailers. Orion has set up a ‘Jobs Hub’ in the Community Room, where job seekers can view the positions on offer and apply on the spot, plus best of all it is a free service. Located on Level 1, of the Woolworths Mall, at Orion Springfield Central. Job seekers are welcome to visit the facility to seek advice and information from the friendly Jobs Hub team which is provided in conjunction with All Trades Queensland. The Jobs Hub is open Monday to Friday 10am-2pm, and Thursday nights to 7pm. Susan MacDonald, Head of Retail for Mirvac said that the company has invested a lot into the area, and the jobs growth is a natural part of the continued expansion. “All up we’ve invested around half a billion

dollars in the area, and this latest development is around $155 million, plus that includes residential investments. “The combination of Ipswich’s location to the Greater Brisbane area, along with the infrastructure that’s involved such as the roads, the train line…it’s brilliant. It’s one of the main reasons Mirvac has invested here, we have such confidence in the area,” Ms MacDonald said. “It’s good to have a central point for jobseekers. When they are keen to work for a company most people think ‘where do I go’ or ‘who do I go to’, and we have everything here from hotels to supermarkets, from cinemas to large retailers. “The larger companies are happy for us to work on this, we haven’t got everyone signed up yet but it’s coming together. There is a huge pool of talent out there.” For more information on the positions available, visit the Jobs Hub or go online to www.orionjobshub.com.au Above: All Trades Queensland CEO Mr John Manning with Susan MacDonald from Mirvac and Mayor Pisasale open the Orion Jobs Hub.

! N I W WIN! Waterwise Tips for Outside the Home

Select the Right Plants

Be Waterwise With Your Watering

Choosing the right plants for your garden can save water and time. A wide variety of native and exotic plants thrive in the Queensland climate. Talk to your local nursery for advice on which plants suit your environment and how to take care of them.

Water deeply but less often, particularly over the cooler months. Try using an old plastic bottle with a small hole in the lid. Place the bottle upside down at the roots of a plant for a slow but deep drip-soak.

Maintain Your Lawn Correctly

Make Your Pool Waterwise

Find Alternative Ways to Clean

Use fertiliser sparingly and adjust the cutting height of your mower. This will protect the soil surface and reduce evaporation.

While it is still a bit cool to swim keep it covered to reduce water loss through evaporation and conserve energy. Make sure you repair any leaks in pool or spa equipment and structures and manually clean filters.

Avoid using water where possible. Use a broom to clean your driveway and brush down external areas to remove things like cobwebs. Where needed, use a bucket of soapy water, but use it sparingly.

To win, email your details (inc. daytime phone number) to win@strikepublications.com.au with the code word in the subject line. Or post entries to PO Box 124, Ipswich, Qld 4305. Entries close September 7th unless stated. Only one entry per household per contest accepted. Prizes can be picked up from our office in Ipswich CBD and cannot be posted.

Robert Oatley Wines The Margaret River region in Western Australia may be small (producing just 3% of Australia’s total grape production) but it is mighty (accounting for 20% of the country’s premium wine market). Cabernet Sauvignon is the clear leader in the area and is followed by several other Bordeaux varieties thanks a similar climate to the famed Bordeaux region. First planted less than 50 years ago, the area has quickly become popular with boutique producers. The Robert Oatley Winery, and in particular the Robert Oatley Signature Series, draws on a remarkable portfolio of vineyards nurtured by the winemaking talent of Larry Cherubino showcasing Australia’s most successful wine styles and regions. Bob Oatley’s mantra is that all wines should be a “darned good drink”, and the high quality Signature Series delivers immediate appeal, with satisfying flavours over an elegant frame. Each wine embodies the grape varietal and region in which it was grown. The 2012 Robert Oatley Signature Series Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon begins with a whiff of green on top of black cherry, black currant, dried herbs, a little mint and even a little tobacco. It’s a really nice, complex aroma. I’d give this wine a couple hours to breathe before tasting as it really develops nicely. It features similar flavours to the nose with dry, grippy tannins and

a bit of minerality leading into the long lasting dark berry infused finish. One classy Cabernet! The 2014 Robert Oatley Signature Series Chardonnay is a wine of great elegance and poise. The aromas of this wine include stone fruits while the flavours include white peaches and soft oak. It enjoy a great structure, finesse and length, all mandatory to make a premium Chardonnay. A truly cracking drop! Both of these stunning wines are now available on the newly refreshed wine list at Char’d Restaurant at the Prince Alfred Hotel in Booval. Oh, and mustn’t forget to mention to keep an eye out for their new beer and sports bar opening very soon – Tap’d. Cheers, Tim

THAT’S SHOWBIZ *Former Charmed star Shannen Doherty has revealed she has breast cancer. In a lawsuit Shannen has accused her former business manager of being responsible for the severity of her case. According to TMZ, the 44-year-old claims Tanner, Mainstain, Glynn & Johnson failed to pay her health insurance which, as a result, was cancelled. Unable to re-enrol until the following year, Shannen says she stopped her regular doctor’s visits. In March this year she learned that she had an “invasive breast cancer metastatic to at least one lymph node”.Now Shannen is taking the case to court claiming the cancer spread while she was uninsured – and she’s laying the blame on her former manager who says they’ll “aggressively defend” the charges. The star, who first won notoriety for her role as Brenda in Beverly Hills 90210, says it’s likely she’ll now have to have a mastectomy and chemotherapy.

*Bosses at a Madame Tussauds attraction in Las Vegas have stepped up security around a Nicki Minaj waxwork after visitors took some rather suggestive photos with the figure. The wax figure shows Minaj on all fours and was inspired by the rapper’s hit single ‘Anaconda’. Since its unveiling earlier this month some visitors have been taking photos of themselves pretending to get hot and heavy with the figure. Madame Tussauds executives have now decided to install extra security guards to protect the model after one particularly disturbing image came to light (which we can’t show here in a family magazine!). “We are taking immediate steps to ensure

more staff are present in this area and that the set around this particular figure so that a picture like this cannot be taken again,” the Museum said in a statement. *Looks like Alien 5 is still a G.O. but fans will have to wait a while for those nasty Xenomorphs to grace our cinemas again. For a while we’ve heard nothing of Neill Blomkamp’s (District 13, Chappie) development of the Alien sequel. Some have decided that the project is already quietly disappearing, but Michael Biehn (Sgt Hicks from ‘Aliens’) and a source in Fox’s orbit have now both come out to insist it’s still very much a priority. The delay is simply about it being handled with care, is the official line. But there is another issue holding it up: Ridley Scott wants it to happen after Prometheus 2. In this far-from-officially-confirmed timeline, Scott will direct Prometheus 2 early next year for a release in 2017 (which would be news in itself ). Blomkamp would then shoot Alien 5 sometime in 2017 for release in 2018. That gives Blomkamp ample time to sink his teeth into developing his Alien movie thoroughly. Scott’s ‘The Martian’, meanwhile, is out on September 30. *Megadeth are returning to our shorts with a date set for Brisbane. It will be the band’s first concerts here since they controversially pulled out of 2014’s Soundwave festival and cancelled their Australian tour. The 2015 tour, to coincide with the release of the band’s new album in October, will be supported by Finnish melodic metal band Children of Bodom. The new record is Megadeth’s 15th studio album and the band’s first with drummer Chris Adler, formerly of Lamb of God. There were reports that Megadeth refused to play on the bill of Soundwave 2014 because fellow band Newsted were performing, but theydenied this was the case. The metal legends will play the Eatons Hill Hotel on October 21. *There is a lot we still don’t know about Star Trek: Beyond. Its plot, for one thing, which is sort of refreshing. But casting news is harder to keep quiet and therefore word has arrived that Lydia Wilson has joined the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise. Actually, scratch that. While Variety reports that she’s aboard the film, there’s no actual news on what she’ll be doing on the set. Could she be a Starfleet officer helping Kirk and co. out on their mission? Or will she be

WITH 97.3 FM’s LOUISE

a thorn in their side, much as it appears Idris Elba will be. Simon Pegg (who returns as Scotty) and Doug Jung have written the script and Fast & Furious veteran Justin Lin is busy wrangling a cast that will include previous stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Zoe Saldana, Karl Urban, John Cho and Anton Yelchin. Wilson, probably best known on TV for shows such as Ripper Street and Misfits, and as Kit Kat in About Time, has also worked in indie romance Love Is Thicker Than Water. *Looks like it’s moving day at the home of Megan Fox and Brian Austin Green. On the same day news broke that the couple was splitting up after 11 years, multiple moving trucks and security personnel were spotted at their Toluca Lake house on Wednesday. Boxes were piled up on the couple’s circular driveway. Us Weekly broke the news that Fox and Green were ending their relationship. The seemingly inseparable duo married five years ago in Hawaii and have two sons — Noah, 2, and Bodhi Ransom, 1. The couple has so far not filed papers to divorce.

*Finally, in news to warm the hearts of the vast majority of moviegoers, Pixar has announced some animated movies for the next few years. To a trilogy, and beyond: Toy Story is getting yet another sequel. That was the biggest news on the first day of Disney’s bi-annual D23 Expo in California, along with announcements of The Incredibles 2, Cars 3, as well as new footage for the sequel to Finding Nemo titled ‘Finding Dory’. Disney Animation Studios – riding high off the success of Frozen and this year’s Big Hero 6 – also announced its new films including Zootopia, Gigantic, and Moana. Disney is also very busy with several Star Wars projects including a Han Solo stand alone move, and a new trilogy which is already in production ‘Star Wars: Rogue One’.

Seventh C-17 Globemaster arrives at RAAF Amberley Australia’s love affair with the C-17A global airlift aircraft continues, with the delivery of the seventh aircraft A41-213 to Amberley recently, and in record acquistion time. Defence says that a team approach between Capability, Acquisition and Sustainment Group (CASG) and Air Force contributed to the success of the purchase and delivery of the seventh C-17A, to be followed later this year with an eighth aircraft. Australia’s acquisition of these additional C-17s, confirmed just months ago, doubles the original order of four C-17s envisaged seven years ago. Australia wanted the C-17 in its inventory for basically one important operational combination: range and payload. Australia is a vast country, with coast to coast distances roughly equivalent across continental United States. But it’s the C-17’s increased use in recent years on overseas deployments that requires a global airlifter that can travel long distances at jet aircraft speeds and carry a lot of cargo, which could include many combat troops and armoured vehicles such as the large Abrams M1-A1 Main Battle Tank. The C-17 also has self protection systems onboard, enabling safer approaches into and departure from airfields where threat

from ground fire exists. Defence Minister Kevin Andrews also points to the suitability of the C-17 to become part of the networked defence force of the future. “Under Plan Jericho, the Air Force is dedicated to developing a networked, future joint force that can respond across the spectrum – from combat to humanitarian support, the Minister said. “An additional two C-17A aircraft will help us achieve that.” An additional factor in acquiring additional aircraft now is that Boeing is in the process of shutting down its Long Beach, California C-17 final assembly line, with work on the 279th and last C-17 now largely complete. The seventh and eighth Australian C-17s were acquired from a final batch of 10 Boeing built as ‘white tails’ (aircraft funded by Boeing in antipation of future orders). Only one of these aircraft remains unsold. The relocation of the Army’s 17th Construction Squadron to RAAF Base Amberley is now assured with parliamentary approval of a $71.8 million facilities project, which includes new working accommodation, vehicle shelters, quartermaster stores and workshops, as well as a new Fire Training Area for the RAAF Fire Services. Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Defence, Darren Chester, said “The new facilities will provide a consolidated Engineer Support Regiment with modern and fit-for-purpose facilities to work, operate, maintain and support the Army’s efforts, both in war time and peace. “Relocating the 17th Construction Squadron to RAAF Base Amberley will provide enhanced operational and training effectiveness, increase deployment readiness, and reduce travel and transportation times. It will also enhance command and control arrangements.” The investment will bring economic benefits for local industry in Ipswich, Queensland, over the next two years. Construction is expected to begin in late 2015 and be completed by late 2016. About 140 Australian Army personnel and their families will relocate from their present home at Holsworthy Barracks west of Sydney. The move enables the construction squadron to be colocated with its parent unit, the 6th Engineer Support Regiment, as is the case with its sister squadron, the 21st Construction Squadron. The increased presence of Australian Army units at RAAF Amberley adds to its value as one of the largest and most influential bases in Australia. With Amberley already home to the C-17A Globemaster III fleet and the KC-30A Multi Role Tanker Transport Fleet – to be joined next year by

the C-27 Spartan tactical airlifter – the relocation of Australian Army units to the base is part of Defence’s long term plan to move air support capability north. The 17th Construction Squadron is an Australian Army unit consisting of personnel drawn mainly from the Royal Australian Engineers. Originally formed in 1949, personnel from the squadron have deployed on operations during the Vietnam War and the ongoing War in Afghanistan; they have also participated in peacekeeping operations in Namibia and East Timor. The squadron is regularly involved in the Army Aboriginal Community Assistance Program and has also been called upon to provide assistance to the wider Australian community following natural disasters, including most recently in the wake of the 2010–2011 Queensland floods. Tower Central building sold
Set in the heart of the Ipswich CBD, the Tower Central building, home to Bendigo Bank and the Post Office has been sold for just over $22 millions and local investors have the chance to get a share in it. The office building was developed in 2009 and is positioned it in the commercial heart of the CBD. Trilogy Funds’ Managing Director Philip Ryan said they particularly liked the strategic location of the asset and its calibre of tenants. “The office has a number of tenants including Australia Post and Bendigo Bank, which holds 70% of the net lettable area,” Mr Ryan said. “The location of the asset is also advantageous, with Ipswich being Queensland’s fastest growing city. “Ipswich is also an SEQ employment hub and the commitment of businesses like Bendigo Bank to the area are serving to underpin this growth and attract investment,” he said. Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale welcomed the announcement and recognition of the region’s strong economic growth and strategic location within SEQ.

“The city is positioned as the major centre serving the western corridor. Our population of 190,000 is predicted to more than double to 435,000 in just 16 years. “I want to thank Trilogy Funds for backing the future of the Ipswich CBD.” Mr Ryan said this trust is targeting an 8%pa* yield, which they think is a strong offering. “This is in stark contrast to other asset classes delivering lower returns, which we know from our investors has them searching for yield,” he said. The minimum investment for the Tower Central Trust is $20,000 to give a broad range of investors access to a commercial property investment. Trilogy Funds has offered two property trusts in the past two years, both in the suburban Melbourne office market. Mr Ryan said Trilogy Funds is seeing a lot of interest in its property trusts, particularly from local investors seeking diversification and higher income returns derived from conservatively structured, well leased commercial property assets.
