Chrissie Swan’s CV gets adde

Fresh from her appearance on ‘I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here’, Chrissie is back on our screens with ‘The Great Australian Spelling Bee’, co-hosting with Grant Denyer. Chrissie first came to our attention on season two of Big Brother, way back in 2003 where she finished runner up. Unlike many who get their fifteen minutes of fame, Chrissie has continued to make a career for herself in media, with her CV in TV and radio getting longer each year. Hosting duties on ‘Can of Worms’ and ‘The Circle’ along with many stints in radio has her comfortable in front of camera, but when we spoke to her she was feeling anything but comfortable, as she was stranded in Bali due to the recent volcanic ash disruptions. “I’m stuck in Bali…can you believe it? I was supposed to do this interview back home, and it’s been a bit of a panic to get hotels. We had one night with all five of us (partner Chris and three children Leo, Kit and Peggy) all jammed into one room. It was bizarre,” Chrissie said. “But after living in the jungle it’s still luxury!”

We asked Chrissie what she puts her success down to as she is in a very select list of people who have made long term careers from the launchpad of a reality TV show, way back in 2003. “That’s a really good question. I don’t think anyone’s ever asked me that. Well, a bit of luck I guess. Probably just saying ‘yes’ to things, giving it a go, and taking risks. I reckon I’m the same person I always was, and I’d like to think I haven’t changed from the old Chrissie.” Fresh from spending several weeks in the African jungle on ‘I’m A Celebrity’, she knew that it would go gangbusters from the get-go. “I hoped that ‘I’m a Celebrity’ would work. I go with my instincts, and when I heard about it, I thought of it as a viewer. I thought ‘I’m going to love this, and I can’t wait to watch it’. If I’m excited as a viewer, then that’s good, so when the opportunity came to be in it…I thought keep that logic. “You never know when you take an opportunity whether its going to work or not, no matter who you are or what it is. But for me, I sort of knew it would be embraced by the

ed to each year, and she shows no signs of slowing down. public, and I knew the people behind it were going to put together a great show. “Would I do it again? Honestly, the further away from it I get the more inclined I am to do it again, but if you’d have asked me on the last day I’d instantly say no,” Chrissie said. “It was truly hard, but in a way it’s good to do something difficult. Every day we have a roof over our heads, and everything’s sorted out, so it was nice to be uncomfortable for a change. “The hardest part was not being ‘mum’, and for that reason I probably wouldn’t do it again because every day it broke my heart being away from my kids.” Chrissie has said that this year she is dedicating herself to “just doing fun stuff”, so when the chance came up to be involved in The Great Australian Spelling Bee, she jumped at it, despite hearing second hand she was in the running. “The show’s announcement came out and I read an article saying that I was being considered, which was news to me, then a week later I got a phone call from Ten and I

said ‘yes please’ immediately. “The beauty of ‘Spelling Bee’ is that you can sit with the entire family and get involved. Kids will love this show because its inspiring and amazing, plus parents will relax as there’s nothing bad in it, just great family TV and its so funny. Put 52 kids on a show and you’re going to get a laugh.” Chrissie has fond memories of her school years in Melbourne but admits she didn’t have the dedication or determination of the spellers on this show. “I was pretty good academically at school, especially at English, but my report cards would often contain comments like ‘easily distracted’ and ‘seems more interested in having fun’. “I love this show because it celebrates smart kids. It makes heroes of these little people who aren’t always the super popular in school. Plus it shows children it’s cool to be clever.” As a parent Chrissie is aware of language, grammar and spelling…something that is often overlooked by a generation that relies

on spellcheck and mobile phone shortcuts for words. Is the battle being lost of retaining our language? “There is that ‘battle’ of protecting our language, especially the rise of auto correct, and the writing of words. That’s really being lost, people don’t write any more. I’ve only got the one child at school so far, and he’s learning the importance of spelling now. In my experience I have to have faith in the system to teach my kids that, and yes, spelling and grammar is important in life.” Alongside Chrissie will be Grant Denyer, someone Chrissie last saw in Africa. “This was the first time I’ve worked with Grant,” Chrissie said. “I only met him for one night in the jungle and he smelt soooo good. So clean. He was like an angel in a clean suit. “Working with him you see he’s a class act, so professional, so clever, and hard working. He’s hilarious and so good with the kids. It’s been a ball working with him.” The Great Australian Spelling Bee begins Monday August 3rd on TEN.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks in the Ipswich Life office putting together this latest issue, including talking with Chrissie Swan on the line from Bali where she was stuck thanks to the volcano drama. Also in this issue we have mega giveaways including some AMAZING Mission Impossible prize packs, movie tickets, books, live theatre tickets PLUS we have 65 double passes to be won to see Meryl Streep like you’ve never seen her before in the movie ‘Ricki And The Flash’. We catch up with some students who are set to work at the V8’s this weekend, plus we check out the Spring/Summer program at the Ipswich Civic Centre which also just hosted the Mayor’s 40th Anniversary Command Performance, and Ipswich Life was there to capture all the glamour. TIME TO START SHOOTING The Enviroplan Photography Competition is on again! Each issue until closing date Ipswich Life will feature some of the best pics from previous years and find out the story behind the photo. This issue we speak with Yamanto’s Linda Oliver, a woman who has held a camera for as long as she can remember. Linda’s photo ‘About To Fly’ was the 2014 Adult Native Bird winner, and also took out the ‘People’s Choice’ award. During her day job as the Environment Officer at RAAF Amberley, you could say that she is keen on all things environmental, so she’s the perfect fit for the competition. With photos pouring in of landscapes, rivers, animals, birds and flora already to the judges, Linda is also passionate about taking photos of the world around her, which is ironic considering the winning photo she took was in her backyard! “Photography has always been a hobby of mine,” Linda said. “I’ve always been attracted to ‘arty’ things, but I’m a terrible artist. So photography interested me as an artform. I like nature photography, particularly natural landscapes, birds and plants. “I probably work in the environmental field because that’s what I’m interested in, but I have taken photos as long as I can remember, whether it was an instamatic camera, and then using my parent’s camera. “I have several cameras, and I love my digital SLR. I’m passionate about it, fair call to say it is my main hobby. I love to travel places where I can do photography, especially on holidays,” Linda said. “I live on a small suburban block, and I’m in the Ipswich City Council ‘Habitat Gardens’ initiative so I try to have as much native flora in my garden as I can. I’m often there taking pics of birds, flowers and such. “On the day I took ‘About To Fly’ I was taking photos of some other birds when suddenly this wren landed nearby.

“So I turned and took as many shots as I could before it flew off. “I love that pic because I adore photos that capture things the human eye can’t see, especially with the wren’s wings moving… the naked eye could never see that. “I’ll be entering again this year, it’s a fantastic competition. I take photos all year and I want to support it in as many categories as I can.” Linda’s advice to anyone thinking about entering Enviroplan: “You don’t need an expensive camera. You can do a nice animal portrait shot, or just a simple flower shot...it really doesn’t matter what camera you have. Just go for it!”

Students fulfil a V8 dream A group of automotive students from TAFE Queensland South West have been chosen to get up close and personal with the world of V8 Supercars, when they head to Queensland Raceway at Willowbank this weekend to get three days of practical mechanical experience from the best in the business. The students don’t know exactly what they will be doing on the race weekend yet, but all are buzzing with excitement at the thought of working on the fastest cars in the nation. V8 Supercar drivers James Courtney and Tim Slade dropped into the Bundamba campus recently to meet some of the students, sign autographs and give a talk on road safety to over a hundred eager students. For 19 year old Ty-Zachary Smith (pictured left with James & Tim) who makes the drive from Laidley every day for his studies in Certificate III in Light Vehicle Mechanical Operations, the chance to work with the V8’s is a dream come true, as he plans to make a career working on high performance vehicles, preferably on V8’s. “My dream is to be a full time mechanic in the performance sector, and my best way to do that is through V8 Supercars, as it has been a long term passion of mine,” Ty said. “When the teacher announced this, I said straight away ‘I’ll take a form’, I was

so excited to get the opportunity to do this. Just to get a chance to look at them, or change a tyre would make my day. I probably won’t sleep much the night before” Ty admitted. “I’m hoping we get to work on the engines, see how they work and it will be good to see the differences between those and a normal vehicle. I’m starting to see there is a slight gap in my training that I need to fill in, so I’m keen to learn more about the cars when I go out there.” Ipswich Mayor Paul Pisasale took on Tim Slade in a V8 Supercar simulator race, and it’s not just automotive students making their mark this weekend. Three beauty therapy students form the same campus have been chosen to be ‘Grid Girls’ on the weekend, including Courtney Wiles and Callan Meiring (pictured left) who were up close with the famous Peter Brock Torana A9X from the Ipswich Motor Memorabilia Museum. TAFE Queensland South West also provides volunteers to the V8 Supercars event.

Winter Maintenance Tips There are many simple things you can do yourself to prepare your car for winter. Here’s a few suggestions from MAS Automotive Service Centres. Look after your battery: Batteries are under a lot more strain in the cold winter months. Check your battery terminals for corrosion. Only fill with distilled water - not tap water. We test your battery FREE with every service. Tyre pressures: All tyres, including the spare, should be inflated to the correct pressure. Incorrectly inflated tyres limit your car’s braking efficiency and its overall handling. Under inflated tyres are dangerous. If you’re not sure of correct tyre pressure, call us today for a FREE tyre check. Tyre wear: On wet, slippery roads, your tyres are especially important for keeping you safe – after all, they are all that’s between you and the road. You must have a minimum of 2mm of tread over the entire tread area (which is roughly equal to the depth on a match head – use this to check if your tread is adequate). Make sure you examine all the tyres, including the spare, for adequate tread and, if any are worn to the limit, don’t hesitate to replace them.

IPSWICH CIVIC CENTRE ANNOUNCES SPRING/ Ipswich Civic Centre is not resting on its laurels, after another record breaking season the programme for September-December has just been released and tickets are now on sale! This year is the 40th Anniversary of the Ipswich Civic Centre and Arts, Community and Cultural Services Committee Chairperson Councillor Charlie Pisasale said that the final line up for 2015 is up there with the best we’ve seen. “They say life begins at 40, which must be why this year’s program has been extremely popular amongst our valued patrons and first time visitors,” Cr Pisasale said. “Over the next four months, the performing arts program will see many brilliant live performers take to the stage to astonish and delight our local audiences.” Highlights of the September-December program include: Reserved Seating Only A hilarious, action packed play about life, love...and the AFL. Starring real-life couple; David Ross Paterson as a loud, burly football fan, and Cecelia Specht as a recently divorced football widow, who is claiming her exhusband’s tickets as part of a messy divorce settlement. This great play brings the colour and controversy of football to the stage on September 1. All My Love Henry Lawson was one of the nation’s favourite writers and poets. His contemporary, Mary Gilmore, was a literary icon and radical socialist. Both were heroes of Australian literature and both were the victims of a deception that thwarted their future as a couple. Taken from excerpts from the couple’s surviving letters, this is the first time their forbidden relationship has been brought to the professional stage on October 29. Things That Go Bump in the Night A celebration of some of the darkest music ever written, this is a spooky special event in the tradition of American Halloween concerts.

IN BRIEF The Diggers’ Rest A major refurbishment of The Diggers’ Rest at Queen and Church Streets in Goodna has delivered a rejuvenated town square for the local community. As part of these works 80 metres of kerbing and channelling have been installed adjoining The Diggers’ Rest near the existing taxi rank as well as repainting of the school crossing. The improvements include new raised sandstone planters and an attractive new uniform paving replacing the uneven brickwork of mixed design and colours. This is an historic site in Goodna with the adjoining war memorial of a white marble obelisk on a stepped base commemorating 124 soldiers from Goodna, Redbank Plains, Darra and Redbank who lost their lives in World Wars 1 and 2. The memorial was unveiled on 24 September 1921 by the Governor of Queensland, Sir Matthew Nathan and crafted by P J Lowther and Sons of Brisbane under the supervision of Mr E Greenway of Ipswich.

Evolution of Ipswich as a Digital City The future of employment, and indeed prosperity, for cities such as Ipswich lies increasingly in the world of information technology, with most advanced communities evolving into this digital environment – and Ipswich is heading, if not leading, in that direction. Computers and the internet pervade almost every aspect our lives, leaving the analogue world in its wake. Who could do without Google to answer our questions or lead us to something we want. Our kids spend more time on their computers than they spend watching television or, much to parents’ ire, doing their school homework. Mayor Paul Pisasale says the future of Ipswich lies in the digital world, where the jobs of today and tomorrow will keep future generations in employment close to where they live. He says there needs to be a balance of retaining the city’s heritage and its caring community persona but staking a digital world claim on the city’s future in business, education, finance, engineering, etc. To provide a test platform for this future, the old fire station at the Top of Town will be used as a Business Startups Incubator, which for the uninitiated means a place set up with computers, ultra-fast broadband connections, mentoring staff and other resources – to assist people with an idea, taking that idea forward through a developmental process to product stage and, ultimately, the market. “We need to take control of our future, we want to give our entrepreneurs in Ipswich, individuals and businesses, the opportunity to develop their ideas, helped along with mentors and introductions to financiers, and others, who can help them take their idea forward,” Cr Pisasale said.

“Business owners will have the opportunity to grow their businesses, with support that’s aimed at making a profit, enabling those businesses to employ more Ipswich people. “And the final thing is to train a wide crossection of businesses in information technology... you can’t run your business and keep up with the pace of advancing digital technology. “We are going to take our community to be the smartest businesses, the smartest community leaders, the smartest entrepreneurs... all that is going to happen in Ipswich. “People like Steve Baxter from the ‘Shark Tank’ will start coming here, and it will create an environment where people worldwide will be saying ‘we’ve got to have a look at what’s happening at that fire station in Ipswich’.” While a name for the Incubator Hub in the fire station hasn’t been decided as yet, it could be named ‘1860’, the year Ipswich was founded as a city, along the lines of ‘1871’, Chicago’s entreprenaurial hub for startup businesses, which has proved a highly successful enterprise and one that has made a real difference in helping entrepreneurs realise their dream. In coming editions of IpswichLife we will keep our readers up to date with progress on the ‘1860’ project and what it means to our city and its digital future.

TRAVELTALK

SURAJ H ARACHCHIGE, MANAGER, HELLOWORLD IPSWICH CITY MALL

THINGS I LOVE ABOUT NEW ZEALAND From time to time, I get asked, “So why New Zealand?” People are curious as to why I’m so passionate about this little South Pacific country. They want to know what it is about this place that I love so much. I LOVE New Zealand’s breathtaking scenery. For such a small country, it really does pack a punch. Nearly every type of landscape is represented here, from beaches to rolling hills to volcanic deserts to mountains to temperate rainforests. I LOVE New Zealand’s great towns and cities. This country has great scenery, but it also has surprisingly great towns. There’s big, cosmopolitan Auckland, character-filled Wellington, resilient Christchurch, and beautiful Queenstown, just to name a few. And that’s not taking into account the great small towns like Taupo, Rotorua, Dunedin, Nelson… I LOVE how eco-conscious New Zealand is. Electric trolley buses. Half-flush options on toilets. And more scenic preserves than you can shake a stick at. New Zealand is clearly aware of what is has to offer. I LOVE New Zealand’s cool native fauna. Despite being close in proximity to Australia,

the Land of Things That Can Nastily Kill You, New Zealand lucked out with its native animal life. Devoid of poisonous bugs, venomous snakes, or deadly jellyfish, New Zealand was gifted with mostly adorable flightless birds. I LOVE New Zealand’s Maori heritage. The South Pacific is full of interesting native cultures, and NZ is no different. The country largely embraces its Maori heritage, with cultural offerings all over the country, “Maori language week” once a year on TV, and an officially bicultural existence. I LOVE the “no worries” attitude in New Zealand. Overall, Kiwis have a pretty good attitude. Kiwis work enough so that they can enjoy their beautiful country and their families on the weekends. Life moves at a slower pace in this part of the world, and the “no worries” attitude that is so engrained in NZ society is one of my favourite things about this country. If you like to know more about NZ and place to go, visit Helloworld Ipswich City Mall on the 13th for their free information guest desk day or speak to Suraj. Mayor says shop local and save online

The Sharemarket experts The new financial year has opened with several issues continuing to create headaches for investors. The Greek debt drama is playing out against a backdrop of sluggish global growth, flat corporate earnings and markets that are still trading at historical premiums thanks only to abnormally low interest rates. So this is not an environment for investors to be heroic and Morgans maintain a cautious investing stance heading into the new financial year. Morgans Financial Limited offer a portfolio of Australian Stock Exchange Listed Companies that target attractive dividend yields for personal investment or for your self-managed superannuation fund. Tony Russell and Grainne Noble are available to explain with clarity, the Sharemarket as an alternative to dealing with the unknowns of the current economic market. DENTAL

HEALTHWEEK 3 - 10 AUGUST 2015 Every year the Australian Dental Association (ADA) promotes Dental Health Week to get Australians thinking about their teeth and oral care. Everything you eat can have an effect on your teeth, and it is important to not only keep them clean, but to have a check up regularly at your preferred dentist. In this feature we’ve compiled some of the area’s specialists in teeth and oral care, plus dentures for those who might need them. When was the last time you got your teeth checked? If you have to think hard about the answer, chances are you may be overdue, and if problems are left unchecked for a long time, it could lead to bigger issues. Prevention is better than cure, so why not give one of these local businesses a call to arrange an appointment? Plus with government assistance for many Aussie families, your children can be checked with no out of pocket expenses thanks to the Child Dental Benefit Scheme which allows up to $1,000 in dental benefits over a two year period.

Eligible families can be bulk billed for their children between 2-17 years of age, leaving you with no out of pocket expenses! Not only do we offer a wonderful service for the kids, but they also offer different options for nervous patients, an affordable whitening menu, general dental and much more. What causes oral health problems? Dental plaque on your teeth is mostly made up of bacteria, which feed on sugar from food and drink, producing acids as a waste product. The acids then erode the teeth by dissolving the minerals on the tooth surface. Most people think that sweets and lollies are the main foods to blame for tooth decay but bacteria not only use the sugar in sweets to create acid but can also use any food that contains sugars and other carbohydrates. This includes fruits, peanut butter, biscuits, crackers, potato chips, dried fruit, snack bars, muesli bars and popcorn to name a few. Especially harmful can be foods like raisins and peanut butter that stick to teeth where they provide a constant source of energy for bacteria. Acidic drinks include all fizzy drinks (including ‘diet’ drinks and carbonated mineral water), cordials and fruit juices. It’s not practical to cut out these foods completely but it’s good to know the basic facts about tooth-friendly eating and have a plan to control any potential damage they might do.

Healthy beautiful smiles for your entire family! The importance of practising healthy and habitual oral hygiene is a solid and strong beginning for your child’s dental future.

MYTOP5 MUSIC FOR A MISSION TO MARS With all the excitement about the photos of Pluto recently, we put our thinking caps on and went on Facebook to ask our Ipswich Lifers a simple question. “You have been selected to be the first person to travel to Mars. Due to space restrictions, you are only allowed to take five albums for the journey. What are they?” Aaron M from Eastern Heights (pictured with daughter Tanaya) sent us some classic tunes to travel through space to. Congrats Aaron, a family movie pass is on its way.

1 The Star Wars Original Soundtrack

If I am floating through my ship in space I must do it with the Imperial March playing. It seems appropriate!

2 Vs by Pearl Jam

Eddie Vedder is awesome, and I’m sure martians need to be taught good music.

3 Nevermind by Nirvana

No space related theme, I just love Kurt Cobain’s voice and this is my favourite album ever.

4 Awesome Mix 2

The Guardians of the Galaxy soundtrack. Starlord flies with it, so should I.

5 Space Oddity by David Bowie

Seems like the perfect soundtrack to travel to Mars. Send us YOUR Top 5 and win a movie pass if we print it. Email your details and your Top 5 of anything at all to darren@ strikepublications.com.au

One act plays at ILT This year’s festival of one act plays at Ipswich Little Theatre promises to continue the exciting tradition that has lasted 61 years. Adjudicator, Lesly Stevenson, from Newcastle, has never adjudicated a drama festival in Queensland and is excited by the variety and standard of plays on offer at the Incinerator Theatre on August 8 and 9. At 1pm on Saturday 8 August the youth section will commence the festival with 3 very different plays; a fairy tale with a twist, a comedy about a school concert gone wrong and the comic antics of young people in an art gallery. Four adult plays will showcase the talents on many local performers. There is an absurd “Pinteresque” black comedy; a drama about the failure of a relationship; a chilling exploration of death and; the comic social views of a worldly plumber in ‘Love and Other Flushes’ (pictured right).

Mayor’s Command Performance celebrates Civic Centre 40 years Australian singer songwriter Kate Ceberano absolutely thrilled a packed house at the Ipswich Civic Centre last Friday night, headlining the Mayor’s Command Performance, a celebration of the Civic Centre’s 40th Anniversary. With her band, the quintessential Aussie soul, jazz and pop performer took the audience on a musical journey over the past 30 years, from New York style art pop with her funk band ‘I’m Talking’ through to present-day own compositions, and fantastic cover versions of Fleetwood Mac classics. Mayor Paul Pisasale said the the Command Performance brought together the best of local choirs, musical theatre and soloists – and to have Kate Ceberano there was “just fantastic.” “Everyone just loves Kate, and to have her here to join our 40th birthday celebrations for the Civic Centre was really memorable.” Kate Ceberano may have been the headline star of the show but that took nothing away from the lineup of talent that preceded her performance, including the Ipswich Musical Theatre Company and the Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir and the Ipswich Orpheus Chorale. Other guest artists included Sahara Beck, Those Tap Guys and Best of Brass, introduced by Master of Ceremonies, Rupert McCall. After the show, Kate said that she really enjoys performing in regional cities such as Ipswich. “There’s a greater sense of community here

16 Ipswich Life

than in the bigger cities. When I’m performing in regionals – such as on a recent tour with Joe Cammalleri, Glenn Shorrock and Brian Cadd – there are people who have been following me for years finally get the opportunity to come along to a show, and I can give something back for their loyalty to me. It’s also so important to me to be part of the music, art and culture scene in those regional areas.”

After more than 30 years as a busy performing artist Kate could be forgiven for taking it easy, but no way. “You know, I’ve never felt more inspired, as a writer and as a performer, as I do now. It’s wonderful, I can perform with operas, symphony orchestras, I can do trios, jazz, pop; it’s something you earn over 30 years, and it’s incredible to me that I have so much musical range on offer. I love that.” Also in 2014, Kate wrote her autobiography, even though her grandmother said she was “way too young” to do that. It covered the highs and the lows of an outstanding life and career. “It wasn’t so much a musical autobiography, I wanted to describe the women I had come from and what defined me as the person I am today. Yes, it was tough to write, but artists use a lot of that confronting material to write from. Also, a lot of people who read that book know that you’re not really any different because you are a star on stage, and that is a very levelling and reassuring thing.” In 2014, Kate became the first female singer to be inducted into the Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame, a hightlight of her career. “That was amazing. It was the first time I had ever rated myself as a musician, I had always

thought of myself as a singer even though I’ve always written music, since the age of sixteen. My first single was penned by my brother and I. “I love singing, but there’s something special about just sitting down and playing, performing your own songs you’ve written, and it’s a wonderful privilege to be part of a band playing live. I want to be part of the whole performance, not just being out the front ‘on stilts’.” Kate is always looking to try new things. “I’ve just been in Melbourne recording with about ten other artists, and they’ve all done covers of my material, my calalogue written work. They will share the ‘spoils’ of all that. In turn, I get to market and promote original music. I just love doing that.” Main: Mayor Paul Pisasale and the whole cast of the Mayor’s Command Performance on stage for the finale. Middle: Kate Ceberano in a spectacular performance and with Mayor Paul Pisasale. Below from left: Sahara Beck plays her own compositions. Lauren Lee Innis-Youren and Robert Shearer perform a scene from Phantom of the Opera. Kate Ceberano entertains the crowd. Best of Brass. The Blackstone-Ipswich Cambrian Choir.

The ‘Swich’ Symphony A local woman is set to enjoy an amazing opportunity as she is in the running to perform with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra (QSO) as part of their ‘Day With The Orchestra’ program. The event includes a weekend of workshops and a performance for community instrumentalists from across Queensland resulting in the creation of the QSO Community Orchestra. “It’s the chance for Queenslanders to rehearse and play with the state orchestra, something very few people ever get to experience; truly a unique opportunity,” said QSO Chief Executive Officer, Ms Sophie Galaise. “Not only will they work with the QSO, it will be under the baton of the internationally acclaimed conductor, Jessica Cottis.” Participants in ‘A Day with the Orchestra’ will take part in a weekend experience of musical preparation and performance; work with conductor Jessica Cottis; play in an orchestra of 85 musicians including players from QSO and perform classical repertoire in a final concert at the QSO Studio, South Bank. Emma Kreis, 26, from Flinders View, has been playing the Cello since she was in year nine at West Moreton Anglican College. “I started out on piano and was always envious of the kids in the school orchestra, so I took up the Cello as I love the deep tones the cello produces,” Emma said. Her full time job is as a radiographer for Exact Radiology, and Emma heard about the program through the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra. “I got an email advising of the opportunity, I was excited by the chance to play with the

Queensland Symphony Orchestra. “It all takes place in October. On the Friday night we get together for the first rehearsal, Saturday is then concentrating on tutorials and practice for the concert on that night at QPAC. It’s really exciting. “I’ve been in the Brisbane Symphony Orchestra for about three years and before that the Queensland Youth Symphony, so I have some experience playing as part of of an orchestra. “The highlight for me is the feeling of exhilaration that comes from playing in a large ensemble. I adore Orchestral music and it can be quite moving at times.” Playing the cello you’d think one of Emma’s favourites would be Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony (which we all know) but she feels that one’s been a bit overdone, and instead chose a different favourite. “If I had to choose a favourite piece of music to play I’d say Tchaikovsky’s Fourth Symphony because the cello part is a lot of fun and challenging in places.” The opportunity is open to all adult community musicians (18 years and older) who are current residents of Queensland and play an orchestral instrument. It is most suited to applicants who play regularly in a symphony or wind orchestra or currently play at AMEB grade seven or higher. Registrations are still open, but close on August 11. Visit www.qso.com.au for more information on how to join Emma and represent ‘The Swich’ on stage. Big things are happening at the Prince Alfred Hotel. Word is starting to spread about a new bar opening soon. What will this new bar be like? I’m here today to fill you in and give you all the juicy details because yes I’m very excited! First of all the new bar at the Prince Alfred Hotel will be called Tap’d - bringing it into line with previous naming pattern with Char’d and Chill’d. Tap’d’s namesake comes from the fact that it has - wait for it - 72 different beers and ciders on tap. Now that is impressive. Tap’d will have the most number of beer taps in any bar in the whole of Australia. Imagine that, a record holding bar right here in Ipswich. Tap’d will have everything from your favorite everyday beers to your packed-with-flavour craft beers as well as ciders, ginger beer and even a sneaky hard lemonade. Tap’d will also feature over 10 different sports channels playing all the time, TVs everywhere throughout the bar, with a giant projector screen playing the major sporting events. These channels include Fox Sports, ESPN and Sky Racing. This is just getting better and better! To accompany all the beer drinking and sports watching Tap’d will feature a menu showcasing a wide variety of slowcooked meats, mouth-watering steaks and specialty bites that are designed to

match with beer perfectly. The kitchen is working incredibly hard to bring you loads of flavour in every meal. If you’re not excited about this bar now then you’re a hard person to please! Tap’d is on schedule to open late August so keep an eye out. In the meantime you can keep up-to-date with all Tap’d news by liking it on Facebook. Also keep an eye out at the Prince Alfred Hotel as they will be giving away Tap’d Tokens during upcoming promotions, these tokens will work as vouchers to use in the first month that Tap’d is open. Until next time! Cheers, Tim

From kids to dogs 23 year old Rhiannon was working in Townsville in Childcare when she decided to follow her dream of a career in the Air Force Security mustering working with Military Working Dogs (MWD). After completing her initial training at RAAF Security & Fire School recently, ACW Stewart is off to Darwin with her MWD ‘Lync’. The two main breeds of military working dogs used by RAAF are the German Shepherd and the Belgian Shepherd Malinois. The dogs are often from Air Force’s own breeding program based at RAAF Amberley. This program allows members of the public to volunteer to foster Air Force pups. “I was an assistant in all age groups in childcare in Townsville,” Rhiannon said. “Working in the military was something I’d always wanted to do, especially with dogs. I had friends in the military so for me it was a perfect fit, so I enlisted back in July last year. “When I went to my interview I mentioned that I had volunteered for the RSPCA, and after stepping up as a group leader in childcare I guess they are some qualities they were looking for. I wouldn’t say dogs are easier to handle than kids, they are both unique in their own way and offer challenges.” MWDs are matched with their handlers to ensure they can work well together. Both handlers and their dogs are tested regularly to ensure they are able to conduct their operational and non-operational duties at any time. Handlers are responsible for the care and welfare of their dog on a daily basis, including feeding their dog, even cleaning their kennels, and over time they form a strong bond. “During training you get assigned your dog, and that dog then becomes my partner,” Rhiannon said. “When on shift, we will always be together to conduct our different roles. “My ‘partner’ is Lync, a Belgian Malinois. When matching dogs to handlers it comes down to your temperament and personality. The instructors get to know you, who you are, and they work out who would make a good

team so dog and handler complement one another. “Now we’ve graduated Lync and I are off to Darwin, I’m so excited,” Rhiannon said. “An average shift for me will consist of kennel hygiene, making sure the dogs are fit, healthy and fed, also grooming, and everything to make sure they are in a healthy condition.” “On shift we conduct security patrols of the Air Base, this is to deter potential threats. We also conduct guarding of Defence’s different assets. “I’m so excited to go to Darwin. I’m from Townsville so I can’t wait to get back in the warmth after a year in Ipswich.” Left: ACW Rhiannon Stewart with MWD ‘Lync’. The Talisman Saber series is a major Australian and United States military training exercise focused on the planning and conduct of midintensity high end warfighting. This was the sixth in the Talisman Saber series, involving up to 30,000 Australian and US Defence personnel participating as a coalition force, primarily to test that allied forces can work together in battle to defeat a common enemy. This year marks the first time Talisman Saber ran simultaneously within the Shoalwater Bay Training Area and at Fog Bay, south west of Darwin. The Australian Army staged Exercise Hamel in conjunction with TS15 at Shoalwater Bay using Talisman Saber themes and scenarios. The Exercise took place over 20 days, with force preparation and demobilisation activities carried out in the weeks leading up to and following the exercise. Tucson is back! On 1st August, Hyundai launches its new mid-size SUV, the Allnew Tucson. Bigger, better equipped and more sophisticated than its successful ix35 predecessor, the All-new Tucson is priced and equipped to become one of Australia’s favourite SUV’s.

Consumers drive change in home furnishings Consumer demand for a design solution for their home, rather than just buying items of furniture, is driving change in the industry, according to David Holdorf of Furniture Court & Beds R Us - just returned from the Australian International Furniture Fair in Melbourne. “Customers are now customising their rooms; it’s plain fabrics, but then it’s scatter cushions and the accent chair, with lamps and prints – bringing colour and something more adventurous into the story,” David said. “In the fabrics, suade is pretty much gone; it’s getting into the linens, textures and the leather-look fabrics.” There’s also an increasing demand for design assistance. “More and more, our customers are asking for room design advice, not just with choice of fabrics but also with accessories and design elements, rather than just buying a lounge, dining or bedroom suite.” With smaller and more open-plan spaces in homes these days, the bulkier suites are being replaced with Scandinavian style furniture that doesn’t overpower the room, and individual items can be easily replaced within the overall design without starting from scratch. David said that low-back sofas and space-saving designs are becoming the norm for manufacturers such as La-Z-Boy, with new fabrics coming through including leather-look alternatives that are more durable, easy-clean and lower price than leather. A new innovation with chairs and sofas is memory foam, a comfort layer common in beds but new to other furniture pieces. “Many of the stands at the show had memory foam

in the seating instead of the traditional pocket springs,” David said. “There’s hard foam core in the seat, that lasts forever, covered with a comfort layer of memory foam on top, which is having a huge influence.” Asian manufacturers are also showing interest in the Australian market, which is good news for consumers. David said that groups such as Furniture Court can now access the world market and have the buying power without having to buy large quantities. “We buy on a six-month cycle, and we’ve ordered stock now that will be in-store before Christmas – ahead of many of the other retailers,” he said. Ipswich customers can expect to see furniture with a more modern Scandinavianstyle in-store, and with more recliner options in sofas and chairs. David said that more of his customers are updating and upgrading their home furnishings, choosing to be at home more entertaining friends and family. There are also shorter delivery times for customer orders, with retailers able to access huge warehouse stock overseas. “Gone are the days of three month delivery times, most times we can deliver in about six weeks,” David said. As far as the local market is concerned, David said that these days buyers are more cautious on price, they want a broader design service from retailers, and they want to customise their purchases, which suits his business. “We have the buying power to meet the market with price, we have our own in-house design service, and customers know that they will get the after-sales service they need,” he said.

In a first for Hyundai, the multimedia systems in the Tucson Active and new ActiveX model support Apple CarPlay (from September), with Android Auto support to follow from early 2016. ActiveX is a new model addition compared to the ix35 lineup, with enhanced equipment including 18” alloy wheels and leather-appointed interior. All-new Tucson has a stronger and safer body structure than before, with a sleeker, more athletic new look - Tucson is slightly longer and wider than the vehicle it replaces. All-new Tucson’s Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design brings dynamic character lines, a bold new take on Hyundai’s ‘brand signature’ hexagonal grille, dramatically-styled projector headlights topped with LED Daytime Running Lights and 0.33Cd aerodynamics. Inside, All-new Tucson also offers progressive new design themes and substantially more cabin space. Exceptional new convenience features and intuitive controls utilise soft-touch surfaces and higher quality materials. Visit www.hyundai.com.au for more information.

Subaru WRX STIs In response to demand from enthusiasts and professional teams, Subaru Australia is importing a limited number of WRX STI motorsport cars, but don’t get too excited as these are for motorsport use only. The four-door 2.0-litre turbocharged cars come from a winning pedigree in rally and tarmac events worldwide. Dubbed WRX STI NR4 Spec, the cars are FIA-homologated and are eligible for FIA WRC2, ERC2 regional and progressive national championships, as they meet the FIA’s new NR4 regulations, which replace the previous N4 and R4 classes. Additionally long-term motorsport partner Possum Bourne Motor Sport is developing a range of packages for these vehicles which will suit everyone from club amateur to the professional. Subaru Australia Managing Director, Nick Senior, said: “Current production WRX and WRX STI have taken interest in these turbocharged legends back to the peak levels we saw in the late 1990s, and with that has come a whole new wave of interest in using them for motorsport activities.

“These cars represent fantastic value for motorsport enthusiasts that want the amazing AllWheel Drive advantage that has made WRX such a legend over the past 20 plus years.” The WRX STI NR4 Specs are available for motorsport use-only and cannot be road registered – buyers need to fit an FIA-approved roll cage, which can be ordered at the time of purchase for fitting pre-delivery. Two colours – white and WR Blue are available. For expressions of interest, contact: motorsport@subaru.com.au
