Ipswich Life is published fortnightly, reaching in excess of 40,000 households across the Ipswich region - and online through our website ipswichlife.com.au. Our focus is on promoting Ipswich, it’s lifestyle, its events, local stories of interest, and the Defence Forces on RAAF Base Amberley. IpswichLife is the only full colour lifestyle magazine wholly produced in Ipswich. We welcome story leads and feedback.
The City of Ipswich has strong ties with the defence force and last week’s announcement by the Prime Minister that our Air Force personnel and troops will be sent to the Middle East to fight IS, will see loved ones separated. As a community we will do what we can to support their families and partners while they are away because they will need our support. With over 400 Air Force personnel committed to the cause, I personally know of a number of council staff who also have family members joining the fight in the Middle East. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you, and with all of our defence community. Council hosted a staff tree planning day. In recognition of Defence personnel, I have planted a special tree in their honour. Our city is known for its care and compassion and as we face these challenges as a community and a country, let us be united in showing our support. God bless our troops for their service and sacrifice. Mayor Paul Pisasale City of Ipswich

Text ‘Kostroma’ is on at the Ipswich Civic Centre for one night only on October 15. Tickets from www.ipswichciviccentre.com.au
From Russia with love Ipswich has scored a coup with the performance of ‘Kostroma’, coming to the Ipswich Civic Centre on October 15. It’s a celebration of all things Russian, played to audiences for more than a decade. As all venues in Brisbane are booked, Ipswich will host this internationally acclaimed show, which has just finished its tenth season in Russia, and is touring Australia over the next two months. Playing for more than ten years by members of the Russian National Dance to almost a million people, ‘Kostroma’ is a celebration of the many native dances of Russia, featuring 45 elite dancers on stage, 600 unique costumes and eight set changes. It is without doubt one of the biggest productions ever to come to Ipswich. In interview with Maria Veshkina who is currently in Moscow, the Producer and Tour Manager for the show, Maria said the entire cast is excited to bring traditional Russian dancing to Australia for the first time. Recovering from a long night, Maria said, “We have just finished the tenth season of ‘Kostroma’ in Moscow, so we are now dismantling everything and loading it out. It was quite an exhausting night. “This is the first time we’ve taken the show to Australia. It’s a huge production, all up about fifty people including dancers, crew and managers.” Russia and Australia have a lot in common. They are of course, geographically expansive, and are both proudly multicultural, which is reflected in the show. “Russia is a very multicultural nation, a huge
nation, and it’s that mix that we try to bring through in the show. The Russian language is what unites us all but there are so many different dialects, religions, and ways of life. “The second half of the show is like a geographical journey across Russia, and you soon realise how many different people live in just one nation. “The show is a family affair. My brother is one of the leading dancers, my mother is a producer and my father is artistic director.” Maria started with the company at age 16 as an interpreter, and her role has grown over the years. In fact she does just about everything you can think of. “It’s the mystery of the show I think that people like,” Maria said. “There is a stereotype of Russian people that they are gloomy, reclusive and not happy with their lives. But we are in fact a very welcoming nation, rich in culture and tradition. We can smile, we love to laugh and are very energetic. It’s good to break the stereotypes that we all follow.” With the end of Communism, things have changed in Russia, which is reflected in the interest around the world of a nation that previously was cut off from the Western World. “That change was especially noticeable in the 1990s after Perestroika (the beginning of democracy in the USSR). People were open to looking at Russia… but our culture is still preserved the way it was, and the way we
perform this culture is what appeals to people of all nationalities and ages. “We get a lot of children with their parents to the show, they love the costumes, the colours and the tales of Russia. There are stories that all children are fascinated by in our culture. We want to show this in a new way, in an interesting way that tells you about Russia without reading anything. Everything is there in one show. “Russian dance is preserved in folk dancing, especially in the rural areas. If you are interested in the culture, the show is performed in a way that you don’t have to be culturally orientated, it can be simply about beautiful dancing and costumes.”

Needs Assessment report launched

West Moreton - Oxley Medicare Local WMMOL recently launched its ‘Comprehensive Needs Assessment 201415’ (CNA) report. I firstly wish to commend Sue Scheinplug, CEO of WMMOL and her excellent team on the report, which is the most comprehensive assessment of the health needs of this community ever undertaken. The report highlights the challenges we face now and into the future. Across Australia, there are 61 Medicare Locals. The CNA report shows that we rank 12th nationally for the number of families with children who are welfare dependent, 14th for unemployment and 6th when it comes to physical inactivity. The report showed that a staggering 71per cent of people living in this region are overweight or obese. I have named just a few of the results of the CNA report but suffice to say, it makes for pretty grim reading. But without this information, our community would find it far harder to address the challenges we face if we are to have healthier futures. Nine of the high priority areas identified
in the report are: mental health, child development, chronic diseases, obesity, health of indigenous people, health services for people living with disability, health services for refugees, service coordination and population growth. The CNA report leaves us in no doubt that there is much work to be done in our area. Despite Tony Abbott’s promise during a televised debate in the lead up to the 2013 Federal Election that “We are not shutting any Medicare Locals”, we now that he is indeed shutting all 61 of them by July 2015. In light of this, combined with the findings from the WMMOL’s CNA report, I hold grave concerns for the future health of people in Ipswich and the Somerset Region under the Abbott Government. Kind regards Shayne Neumann, MP

WHAT’S NEW IN
THEATRE
“Politics is funny. It’s a nightly soap opera. There have always been characters, but most of them are just bland. The great flair of the leaders we used to have like Hawke or Keating and how they handled themselves in question time, it just makes you feel like there are too many media advisors who are taking the personality out of them. There’s a distinct lack of personalities. People want to see politicians that they can connect with.
Politics with Personality The last time audiences saw Rodger Corser on our TV screens he was revelling in his role as the nasty piece of work ‘Ferris’ on Puberty Blues, but he is back in a new role in the mini-series ‘Party Tricks’. With a long career on television that includes the original ‘Underbelly’, along with ‘Sprited’, ‘McCleod’s Daughters’, ‘Water Rats’, and four years in the Aussie cop drama ‘Rush’, Corser is back in the much-hyped and long awaited mini series ‘Party Tricks’. Also starring is Gold Logie winner and possibly Australia’s most popular woman, Asher Keddie from ‘Offspring’. ‘Party Tricks’ is the story of Kate Ballard (Asher Keddie), facing her first election for State Premier. Her victory seems assured until the opposition announces a shock new candidate: David McLeod (Rodger Corser), a popular media identity and a man Kate had a secret, tumultuous affair with several years ago. Awkward much? Corser said that he enjoyed making ‘Party Tricks’, especially as it reunited him with producer John Edwards who has had more than a hand in Rodger’s career, and with Asher Keddie starring, there is already an audience to tap into for the mini series. “I don’t think it’s a bad thing having that the Offspring audience attach themselves to this, as it happens in American TV a lot. That’s a huge fan base, not just for Asher but also for John Edwards. It’s obviously not the same show, she wouldn’t be in it if was the same. “For the few moments we were with one other it was great, but it was rare that we were in the same room during filming, which is part of the relationship. “For example, you never see the Premier in the same room as the Leader of the Opposition. I’m sort of like Queensland’s Campbell Newman in the respect of running the future of the party from outside politics when he was the Lord Mayor of Brisbane. My character is a journalist who is brought in to run for the first time, and if he wins he becomes Premier. “That’s the difficult thing, with the premise of the show, but there are a few flashbacks, and when I’m announced as Opposition Leader it’s quite a shock for Asher’s character. “I only work with John Edwards. If you took
him out of the picture I’ve only done three shows!” Corser said. “We have a great relationship when we can say ‘what do you reckon?” “John’s really good at mixing new people and others he’s used before. I remember on ‘Rush’ he was always bringing in new writers or directors. He’s so passionate about supporting the industry and ‘blooding’ people.” While most of us find politics interesting, it’s the characters that we love in Australia. The recent revelation that Bob Hawke used to sunbake nude at Kirrabilli House just sums out the fact that there is a bit of larrikin in all of us. “While we aren’t flag waving patriots like the Americans we do have the ‘Tall Poppy Syndrome’, and we like that larrikin that’s in us all. Look at the PM… how many politicians around the world do you know that would give a press conference in a pair of ‘budgie smugglers’? It’s so uniquely Australian.” Research of the character came in an unusual form for Rodger, and it’s not what viewers would expect. “I did some research, and because my character is a journalist/media personality, I actually met with Eddie McGuire. He’s a man who makes things happen, but not in a political sense. “I thought he was a kind of model, or a reference point. He’s close to the character, and I looked at other people who had made the jump from media to politics. “Eddie was great with his time, he gave me half an hour… and two hours later we were still talking, even though he’s doing three things at once. I also met with the Deputy Premier who showed me around Parliament in Victoria, which was interesting, and of course the writers did a lot of research including going into campaign rooms and party rooms. It’s interesting how they run, especially during elections. “But at the end of the day, the heart of the show is of course this scandal, and I think people are going to enjoy it.”
Book drive to buy books for the Pyjama Foundation
Records were smashed in Ipswich last week, thanks to the generosity of Ipswich residents, as the call went out for books to help children in foster care. The Pyjama Foundation has volunteers who read to children, who through no fault of their own, are looked after in foster care. When Bronwyn Sheehan, Founder of the Pyjama Foundation, realised that children in care were not being given the same opportunities in life as other children she decided to do something about it. “I founded The Pyjama Foundation eight years ago now, to contribute to the lives of kids in care. I wanted to do something that would be positive and that would have the benefit of changing the direction of their precious little lives. Education equates to quality of life. The call out for books aimed to get 1300 books, and a total of 1732 were donated. The official handover was held at the West Moreton Health Service in the Ipswich CBD recently. Donations can still be made, by dropping off books at the Humanities Building, 56 South Street. has continued strongly since the reality show was aired. “What I love about fashion is it lets people express themselves and show their real personalities,” he said. “It’s great to see Ipswich gaining its own fashion identity.” Mr Buchanan said although the festival will host big labels, he enjoyed talking with students and up-and-coming designers the most. “When judging I try to talk to students before or after they show their entries,” he said. “I like to give them some advice, I’m really looking forward to seeing what they come up with this year.” The 2014 Ipswich Fashion Festival begins on October 25 and continues until November 1 with a number of fashion events being hosted in the local area. CITY VIBE Minister celebrates with ‘Mylestones’ Mylestones Employment, part of Cerebral Palsy League’s Booval centre, is a community service organisation that specialises in providing employment for people with disabilities - and recently they celebrated their 1st Anniversary. Minister for Communities, Child Safety and Disability Services Ms Tracy Davis was there with the Local Member for Ipswich, Ian Berry to inspect the offices and join clients for lunch. Ms Davis visited Ipswich 60 & Better Program in Raceview, The Lion & The Lamb Community Centre in Woodend and finished her visit at Mylestones Booval. “Ian and I announced $2.6 million for the local domestic violence services, but we didn’t have much time to go around and see some of the community groups, so we’re doing that today,” Ms Davis said. “There hadn’t been any mapping done of where services sat, and that took some time, as it was a big body of work. We started with the youth program, had conversations with the
sector, plus with those who were accessing the services. It was all about tweaking the program, and that’s started here in the South East.” “The one that was touching for me was the Food Barn,” Mr Berry said. “They deliver more than just food to people. While we want to think all children have the same start in life that’s clearly not the case.” “I hear stories of disadvantage and vulnerability, but also fantastic stories,” Ms Davis added. “Like these sixteen clients that came to Mylestones and are now gainfully employed in the community. Its also about the local businesses opening the doors, and their social conscience to providing opportunities for people. That makes for a stronger community.” L-R: Quita Brown Regional Manager Mylestones Employment, Paul Nutley Cafe 121, Eleanor Jones from Tower Central Café, Minister Tracy Davis, Ian Berry MP, Mylestones Ipswich Manager Michael Heit, Job Development Officer Cameron Williams.
Challenges for our ageing population Everyone wants to live longer, yet there’s only one way to achieve longevity, and that is ageing. Shayne Neumann, Federal Member for Blair and Shadow Minister for Ageing, says “Ageing has become a dirty word. It smacks of wrinkles, grey, thinning hair, and it reminds us how frail we are. Ageing is a natural part of life but it does have its challenges. For the first time in Australia’s history more people are reaching retirement age than working age. As the Baby-Boomer generation retires, growth in the working age population will slow. Meantime, advances in health and technology allow people to live longer. By 2031, it is expected that 25 per cent of the population will be aged over 65 years — up from 14 per cent in 2012. While more people will require care and support, there will be fewer people working and paying taxes. Mr Neumann said that one of the most complex challenges for an ageing population is Dementia. “Not every person will have Dementia, but the chances increase the longer we live. Currently about 320,000 Australians have Dementia, and by 2050 it will be almost one million,” he said. “While lifestyle changes may help slow the impact of Dementia, to date there is no cure. “Challenges the nation needs to address as a matter of priority include: more research and investigation into the causes and potential cures; Dementiafriendly communities; investment in an

adequately paid, trained and supported workforce; and the Dementia and Severe Behaviours Supplement reintated. “I applaud the great advances Australian heroes of science, health and technology are making to assist us live longer and live better. Mr Neumann said that challenges facing the ageing population also relate to certain changes brought in by the Abbott Government, particularly indexation of the age pension that will reduce pensioners’ income and impact on the revenue streams of aged care providers; and axing the Dementia and Severe Behaviours Supplement. “These cuts are unnecessary in a sector going through significant changes as part of Labor’s reforms that address the sustainability of aged care,” Mr Neumann said. “It is time for the Government to address the significant challenges facing the nation, and the aged care sector in particular.”

Up in the air, then grounded - Rochelle Vaisanen’s story
THIS IS
MY STORY
The hardest part of telling a story is writing the opening line, but me it’s easy. It always starts the same way: August 4, 2013… the day I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I was living and working in London, working as Cabin Crew for Qantas. When I wasn’t travelling for work, or exploring Europe, I was training. At the beginning of 2013 I had discovered the sport of Triathlon. I loved the competitive aspect of racing and the variety of training. It only took one race and I was hooked. I did what every wannabe triathlete does: I bought a bike and threw myself into training. Life in London was busy, and it was about to change. I was to start a new job as crew for a private jet company — a flight attendant’s dream job! My private health insurance was about to cease, which promoted me to have a lump in my breast re-checked. Yes, re-checked! I had discovered the lump a year prior, but the doctor couldn’t feel it. She disregarded it as hormone changes and told me to ‘keep an eye on it’. It shouldn’t have taken me a year to go back, because every day confirmed it was still there. I let my hectic life get in the way (don’t do the same! If in doubt get a second opinion, immediately!)

Luckily for me, the second doctor didn’t disregard it and sent me for immediate testing. I went to the appointment alone. I was jet lagged and tired. Not long after I was given the news. I was now one of those people in the waiting room. I had cancer. The next 12 months were a whirlwind. Family members flew to London to be there while I had further testing and we awaited my final diagnosis. We learnt there would be no escaping chemotherapy, so the decision was made to return home, to Ipswich. There were no tears. My practical side kicked in. Within four weeks I had packed up my life in London and moved back to my parents’ home. A house I had left 13 years prior. A week after landing back home I was in the hospital operating theatre. Another four days later I was back having a second surgery. This is when I first learnt how quickly things can change. It’s when I learnt to ‘roll with the punches’. Being in my thirties, and yet to have children, there was something else to consider: IVF. As chemotherapy puts you into early menopause, freezing eggs is highly recommended and I only had a six-week window before chemo was to start. Going through IVF was a humbling experience. It was a tough process and I didn’t have the additional emotional pressure. I was doing it as a safeguard. Treatment forces you to hand over your body to science; to the doctors and experts. It’s very easy to feel you’ve lost control but some things were in my control. A defining moment was when I shaved my head. No way I was sitting around waiting for my long, blonde locks to fall out. Then it was time to face the big one… chemotherapy. Looking back, I often say I had an easy run; I wasn’t overly sick; I didn’t lose my appetite; and I still managed to remain active. But in truth, it wasn’t an easy road. I had a life-threatening allergic reaction to the chemotherapy drugs, and after two more attempts, and two more reactions, the doctors changed my treatment. Rolling with the punches again. To keep active I joined CrossFit. It allowed me to keep moving.
I was tested for the BRCA 1 and BRCA 2 gene — the gene that puts you at higher risk of a recurrence. It was negative so my risk of recurrence is lower, yet after much research and discussion with doctors I decided to have a double mastectomy instead of radiation. Some women are petrified with the thought of losing their breasts but I don’t regret it for a second. I feel more body confident than ever. I took control of myself and my future. I had the idea to establish a local park run, and along with support from the Ipswich Hospital Foundation and Ipswich City Council it was achieved. We launched the event just 10 days after my last round of chemo. I also started a blog (www.cancertriathlon.com) to keep friends and family informed but it became my therapy; expressing how I was feeling. Through cancer I have learnt to be still; to appreciate quiet times. I once was in my PJ’s all day and completed a 1000-piece jigsaw…nothing wrong with that! For someone who was so independent I also learnt to accept help from others. I’m excited for the future! Moreover, I have a greater appreciation for the things I am able to do. A key part in my journey was the support from friends, family and groups within the Ipswich community (CrossFit Western Front, Ipswich Triathlon Club, Parkrun, City Hope Church and recently Ipswich Civic Centre). Without their continuous encouragement, my story could have a very different ending. I’m Rochelle, and that’s my story.

CWA seeks new members The Ipswich branch of the Country Women’s Association wants new members, in an attempt to boost numbers of an association that has been in existence for 92 years, and operating in Ipswich for the past 88 years. President Lyn Kelly said membership has dropped to an all time low, and with people being so ‘time poor’ these days, the CWA isn’t the only charity struggling for members. The CWA is the largest women’s organisation in the country, with a membership of over 25,500 in 1,500 branches around the country. But sadly the membership at the Ipswich Branch has dropped to just six members. If this situation continues, and the CWA can’t attract more people, that history will come to an end. Lyn Kelly said that she understands it’s hard for people these days to commit to groups, but that the CWA has something for everyone. “These days, both parents work, children play sports and everyone has such a busy life here in Ipswich,” Lyn said. “I guess that’s why numbers have dropped, but people don’t realise what CWA is all about. “People don’t realise how involved the CWA is within the community, as we don’t seek publicity for what we do. We have a rural crisis fund, which is state-wide, and 100 per cent of the money goes to people in the need. “We do other things like providing birthing kits for underprivileged countries, and so much for the wider community in Ipswich. People just don’t know what we are all about.” The group meets once a month in the CWA Hall next to the Ipswich Civic Centre. There is also a craft group which meets every Wednesday morning.
“We have nine branches in our division, and all of them donated money during the floods. CWA is going great guns out West, where it originated, especially with the young mums, as it’s a chance for women and their children to get together. There are people out there who don’t have much social interaction, and often out bush it can be the only outing they have.” Treasurer and member for 24 years Gail Neville said that she if it wasn’t for CWA she would never do the things she does. “Most people think we just make scones, but they forget that during the floods CWA members were out there in force. I’ve been a member for 24 years and I’ve been involved in public speaking, which I could never have done without CWA. “We don’t want to close down, we just want some new members,” Gail said. Ipswich will be flooded with members in October, as 350 women from all over the state will descend on our town for the CWA State Conference.
Anyone interested in joining CWA or finding out more about what they do are welcome to call Lyn on 3281 8370.

WHAT OUR READERS
THINK
What would you like to see open in Ipswich? We asked our readers and Facebookers what they would like to see happen in Ipswich. Most people went for shopping alternatives, more choice for dining out and, of course, a major department store in the city. Hopefully, our Council and business entrepreneurs get some ideas from these replies: Therese Ford Somewhere to eat on special occasions, also maybe an op-shop alley where all op-shops are all in the one street. Vicky Mills IKEA & Australian Geographic Lynette Duffy Clothing shops to fit ALL sizes (not just petite) and a place for great bridal/formal outfits. Danielle Gergely More specialty food stores such as butcher, fruit shop etc rather than just the options of Woolworths and Coles.
Clifford Rix A nice authentic Chinese restaurant that is cheap and tasty like at Sunnybank. Make it rent free so that they can become established and it will entice them to come. Have markets in the mall to attract people at night. Paul Rix Ribs & Rumps. Leigh-Anne Townsley Krispy Kreme… if that came to Ipswich I would have shares in it and wouldn’t fit through the door cause I love them so much! Barbara Kaspers Stephenson A Bread Top shop. A Centro shopping centre, and more coffee shops that use the ecoffeecard app Teneille Wode Harris Scarfe Jenny Doran Ipswich is lacking a really good homewares store like House or Howard’s Storage World for their large ranges of quality items and definitely a Myer for just about everything, but particularly their extensive clothing range, including after 5 wear. Emma Neller Hanaichi Sushi bar and dining...like in the Winter Garden in the city Tracy Barron City Chic Kate MummaJugs A real mexican restaurant

FIVE Dinner Guests

We asked our readers if they could have any five guests to their house for dinner, alive or dead, who would you invite and why? We loved the answers from Angel C. in Raceview, who sent us a very interesting list. Not sure if Kurt Cobain and Michael Jackson would get along, but it would be fun to find out! Congrats Angel, a double movie pass is on its way to you! Music equals life and life equals music. That’s why I would have dinner with: 1. Kurt Cobain A music legend and absolute icon. 2. Dave Grohl Music royalty and inspirational and master of so many instruments. 3. Michael Jackson A musical genius from past that has helped shape the music evolution and everything it is. And what’s life without laughter? That’s why I choose: 4. Jim Carrey For his humorous body language and rubber face expressions. 5. Adam Sandler For always being there when I needed a good laugh. Even if it is the 100th time I’ve seen a movie and can quote it word from word! Not to mention, my husband and I went in our first date to a Adam Sandler movie. Now his laughter moves on to the next generation as our children enjoy watching his movies now too.

EDUCATION AND
ENROLMENTS Student outcomes key to teacher performance reviews The aim of a new teacher performance review process, becoming compulsory at state schools from the start of the 2015 year, is a central part of the Government’s Great teachers = Great results five-year $537 million action plan to improve student results. Minister for Education, Training and Employment John-Paul Langbroek said the process aimed to make sure every school teacher is performing at their best. “This new performance process will make a real difference to our children by focusing on the most important person in their classroom – the teacher,” Mr Langbroek said. “The Government and the Queensland Teachers Union recognise that great teachers play a critical role in giving young Queenslanders the educational experience they deserve, preparing them for the future. Mr Langbroek said the annual review would involve the development of a performance plan for every teacher with ongoing feedback and support from principals and school leaders during a 12-month period. “The process will have three distinct phases: reflection and goal setting, professional practice and learning, feedback and review.”
“It will draw from a wide range of evidence including student outcomes, classroom observation, parent, peer and student feedback and self-assessment. “It is about improving our teachers so that the learning and outcomes of our students can also improve. “Alignment with the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers will provide benchmarks for the career stages to which teachers can aspire.” Mr Langbroek said the Government was setting out to improve the academic standing of Queensland schools compared with other states and territories and internationally. The Education Department and the QTU are working together to provide information sessions and professional development opportunities throughout the state before the end of the 2014 school year. Teachers professional development could now be linked to school and system priorities. “This will mean a whole-of-school approach to improved teacher performance and tailoring teachers’ professional development to the needs of the teacher, the school and the students,” Mr Langbroek said.
Fiona Palmer shares her ‘Paper Tales’ A popular Western Australian will be guest of honour as part of the Ipswich Libraries’ Paper Tales series next week. Accomplished author Fiona Palmer will share her story and the details of her latest novel The Sunnyvale Girls. Ms Palmer’s author talk will be held from 10.30am on October 17 in the Barry Jones Auditorium in the Ipswich Central Library building. Paper Tales is a way for book lovers to be able to meet some of Australia’s leading writers in a wide range of fields, learn more about what makes them tick and the inspiration behind their works. In her latest heart-warming novel, Ms Palmer, gives readers what they have grown to love and expect in her stories: strong women, a sense of home, the Australian landscape and of good old romance. The Sunnyvale Girls is a moving story of three generations of Stewart women who share a deep connection to their family farm, but a secret from the past threatens to tear them apart. Ms Palmer lives in the tiny rural town of Pingaring in Western Australia, three and a half hours south-east of Perth. She discovered writer Danielle Steel at the age of 11 and has now written her own brand of rural romance. Ms Palmer has attended romance writers’ groups and received an Australian Society of Authors mentorship for her first novel The Family Farm. She also has extensive farming experience, helps out with the local mail run
and was a speedway-racing driver for seven years. She is also the bestselling author of Heart of Gold, The Road Home, Sunburnt Country, The Outback Heart and The Empty Nest. Book sales and signings will be available following Ms Palmer’s talk. Bookings are essential and can be made by contacting the Ipswich Central Library on 3810 6815 or visiting http://www.library. ipswich.qld.gov.au/ (Photo courtesy Lata Photography)

2015 shaping as significant year for education in Queensland 2015 will be a significant year for education with the formal move of Year 7 from primary to secondary schooling, according to David Robertson. Executive Director of Independent Schools Queensland. In an online opinion piece, Mr Robertson said that this initiative will bring Queensland into line with every other State/Territory in Australia except Western Australia and South Australia. “If we look back over the past decade, virtually every major aspect of our school education system has been reviewed and the subject of reform,” he said. “There has been a significant and deliberate transformation of Queensland schooling structures, including the introduction of the Prep year (in 2007), a change to the school starting age (also 2007), and the provision of kindergarten (with participation in kindergarten in the year before Prep increasing from around 29% of students in 2008 to 97% in 2013). “Even the senior assessment and tertiary entrance system, which has been in place since the early 1990s, is under review. Mr Robertson points to good reasons for the substantial changes, as students have lagged well behind their interstate counterparts in educational outcomes. “The impact of the significant structural changes to Queensland schooling is already starting to show improvements
to educational outcomes as measured by the annual NAPLAN, in the early years in particular. “The transition of Year 7 to secondary education is a sensible follow-on from the introduction of the Prep year in 2007. Without the change, primary students would be completing eight years of primary schooling. “Given the more rigorous Australian Curriculum now implemented in primary schools, the Year 7 cohort of students will be better suited to the educational challenges presented by the secondary curriculum. Mr Robertson said that Independent Schools Queensland has always supported the transfer of Year 7 to secondary, whilst recognising the issues raised by parents such as the need for excellent pastoral care. “I can confidently say that independent schools are ready for Year 7 in secondary and are looking forward to welcoming more than 11,000 students into Year 7 in 2015,” he said “Our newest Year 7s will be part of the nearly 58,000 students across Queensland entering Year 7 in secondary. “Our political leaders are to be applauded for the recent changes to Queensland school education, but a lot more work is needed, particularly to meet the needs of an increasing student population.”

Consistently achieving the area’s top NAPLAN results in Years 3, 5, 7 & 9
Girls’ Grammar and Junior Grammar record top NAPLAN results Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School (IGGS) and Ipswich Junior Grammar School (IJGS) have recorded some of the top NAPLAN results in Ipswich and surrounding areas. Junior Grammar’s Year 3 students have continued to make substantial gains over the past three years in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation, moving from an average of 42 per cent of students to 73 per cent of Year 3 Junior Grammar students, placing in the top two NAPLAN bands across all five tests in 2014. The improvement trends are also prominent across all tests in Year 5 with Junior Grammar’s Year 5 students achieving their best scores in numeracy, reading, writing, spelling, grammar and punctuation over the past seven years. Girls’ Grammar students have also made pleasing gains this year with Year 7 students’ results continuing the year-on-year upward trends in writing, grammar, punctuation and, in particular, numeracy. Year 9 students also achieved the highest scores over the past seven years in all five tests with an average of 43% of Year 9 Girls’ Grammar students placing in the top two
NAPLAN bands across all five tests in 2014, as opposed to an average of 26% back in 2008. According to IGGS and IJGS Principal, Dr Peter Britton, these results are a credit to the hardworking, disciplined students, professional staff and supportive parents of Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School and Ipswich Junior Grammar School. “The School recognises that there is always room for improvement, however, this year’s NAPLAN results indicate that our persistent focus on striving for excellence in learning and teaching is working,” Dr Britton said. Ipswich Junior Grammar School will be fully co-educational from its Early Education Centre (Kindy, Pre-Prep and long daycare) through to Year 6 from 2015. Ipswich Girls’ Grammar School is a girls only school from Years 7 to 12 with boarding currently from Years 7 to 12 and from Years 5 to 12 in 2015.

Many of us have a Bucket List of the perfect jobs. I was lucky enough to fulfill one such dream working in the wine industry for just on 10 years. During that time I saw some of Australia’s best wine regions and sampled many a fine drop from some of the countries best winemakers. A few weeks ago I felt a smile ignite when Winemaker Mark Messenger from Juniper Estate decide to pay us a visit and share some of his best wines. (It’s a tough job but someone has to do it) Juniper is a family owned Vineyard in Margaret River WA in the heart of one of the countries best wine growing area’s. Having sold these wines to many a restaurant in my day, the wines did not let me down. The stand out was an amazing 2008 Juniper Crossing Shiraz. WOW! 100% Margaret River fruit, and this wine spent 14 months in Oak with 10%
being in new French Barriques. The wine is drinking perfectly now and a great example of Margaret River Shiraz. Bursting still with big berry fruit, soft white pepper tones subtle tannins this wine punches above its weight. It’s a perfect partner with a juicy steak, with natural food tannins in balance with the full flavor of a well aged Shiraz. With the wine industry still in over supply this wine is a bargain and an opportunity to try at it’s best. A small amount was secured for Char’d Steak Restaurant available by glass and Bottle until we run out. Tasting available on request and take home option available. Our New Wine List at Char’d will be released soon with many of our tops wines being made available in the Restaurant at Retail Price “Happy Days Ahead” Cheers Pete

Explore some of Russia’s previously hidden treasures, including the Kremlin, Red Square and Peterhof Palace; and experience the magic of the Russian Ballet. C-17 pilot wins Business Award Squadron Leader Samantha Freebairn, a C-17 pilot with No 36 Squadron at RAAF Amberley, has won a top award in the Telstra Business Women of the Year Awards. In 2011, SQNLDR Freebairn began to develop the Graduate Pilot Scheme (GPS) in response to an Australian Defence Forces’ action plan to recruit and retain more women in the ADF. “My scheme has expanded the pilot recruiting pool by incentivising the option of a military flying career to those who had not previously considered it,” she said. “Since 2011, the Air Force has recruited just two female direct-entry pilots, compared with 70 males, despite the fact that about half of the aviation students are women.” As a trailblazing RAAF pilot herself, Samantha was determined to address this imbalance. The GP Scheme encourages higher numbers of women to apply for pilot training, by grouping candidates together for mutual support, providing mentors and paying university fees. The GPS recruiting pipeline already has a number of high calibre female candidates leading to a doubling of the number of women pilots within two years, and will also potentially produce more female fast-jet fighter pilots in the RAAF. Telstra Awards judges said the scheme has substantially increased recruitment rate, profiled female pilots, and it is now part of Griffith University Aviation course. The judges described Samantha as “persistent with an
engaging personality and an ability to see a problem clearly and use ‘hard’ analytical skills and ‘soft’ personal skills to work with others to put a solution in place.” Having flown many humanitarian and other C-17 tasks, including missions into Iraq and Afghanistan, SQNLDR Freebairn is now one of the most experienced C-17 pilots in the RAAF. Her exploits are now featured in the latest book Air Force by Defence author Ian McPhedran. SQNLDR Freebairn also established the Flying Females networking brunch at the Australian Defence Force Academy, and produced ‘Flying Solo’, a magazine-style guide to better equip female trainees to deal with the maledominated environment. As a mother, Samantha has no problem with her daughter following in her footsteps. “If my daughter ever wants to be an Air Force pilot, I want to feel secure in the knowledge that she’ll be judged on her skills and given a fair and even opportunity to achieve her full potential.” Above: SQNLDR Samantha Freebairn in front of a C-17 at No 36 Squadron. Health Services personnel new to the Air Force now have a taste of what it’s like operating remotely from the relative ‘luxury’ of a permanent medical centre, as they carried out simulated medical procedures from a small tented hospital. For training purposes, the hospital-in-tents was set up on RAAF Base Amberley, but it simulated a deployed unit on the ficticious island of Netana, anywhere overseas. Commanding Officer, Health Operational Conversion Unit, Wing Commander Mike Penman, said the five-day course was the first health related course the six medical personnel do before going on to do aeromedical evacuation and other courses. “This course teaches them deployable health support, operating from a strategically located tented hospital,” he said. “We set up an evacuation handling centre where people come for treatment before being evacuated by C-17 aircraft back to Australia. Today, the students dealt with a simulated heart attack victim and a child with a broken leg. After treatment, the patients were loaded onto an ambulance and taken to the airfield for evacuation.” The course, which comprised doctors, nurses, medics and other health personnel worked side-by-side to establish the
hospital and continue operations. “For the new doctors and the nurses it is the first time they have had to operate outside a hospital,” WGCDR Penman said. “We are proud of the fact that we are the only unit to conduct this type of course, involving all ranks and allied health professionals working together. These people know that they could be the next ones to go to deal with a humanitarian disaster, so they take their training seriously. “They come away feeling good about the close interaction, not just doing their own thing. Over the five days the students lived in the tents, with power supplied by generators, meals from ration packs, so it’s reasonably realistic without being too hard on them.” On completion of the course the students returned to their home squadrons/units to undergo unit-level training, some of whom will return to Amberley to undergo aeromedical evacuation training. RAAF forces in Middle East are “no kidding” ready to go After work-up training flights last week, Australian forces in the Middle East are ready for operations as part of an international coalition against Islamic State insurgents in Iraq, says the RAAF Component Commander Air Commodore Steve Roberton. The practice runs ensure that we are nokidding ready to go should the government make that decision to commence operations in the Middle East”, AIRCDRE Roberton said. The flying operations last week confirmed that the Super Hornet, KC-30A air refueller and Wedgetail AEW&C crews could integrate into the coalition structure. The air commodore said that the aircraft and crews needed to fit into the command & control structure within the area of operations. At the time this edition goes to print, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has authorised surveillance flights by E-7A ‘Wedgetail’ and air refuelling flights by RAAF KC-30A aircraft.. In a video statement earlier, AIRCDRE Roberton said, “These missions will take us right through the Middle East area of operations … We’re practising the way that we that we co-ordinate and communicate with all our host nations in the area. “It’s a key part of our training and our force preparation, awaiting a decision from government.” That the RAAF combat and support elements were able to deploy at short notice and fit in almost seamlessly with Australia’s coalition partners is due in large part to training that is aligned to coalition type operations, which has included participation in mulitnational exercises such as Pitch Black and Red Flag. “What we can see over here is testament to that training,” AIRCDRE Roberton said. “We have managed to deploy the largest air task group since Vietnam. We’ve gotten over here within days and we’re ready for combat operations.” About 600 ADF personnel are involved in the
task group. Deploying Australia’s newest aircraft types – in the Super Hornet, Wedgetail and KC30A – shows a high level of confidence in the operational capability of aircraft, crews and support personnel. While the Super Hornets achieved full operational capability in December 2012, the KC-30A and E7A aircraft have not yet been confirmed as fully operational. However, this relates to mainly technical issues that will not affect their capability in the missions envisaged. The actual role of the RAAF aircraft is not yet confirmed. Defence Minister Julie Bishop says that any involvement by Australian forces will be “measured” and “prudent.” She said that Australian troops would react to the formal invitation of the Iraqi government. RAAF’s first F-35 takes to the skies Australia’s first F-35A Lightning II made its inaugural flight last week, marking a significant milestone for the F-35 program. Lockheed Martin F-35 Chief Test Pilot Alan Norman piloted the aircraft through functional checks during the two-hour sortie. The aircraft designated as AU-1 while undergoing initial flight testing is scheduled for delivery later this year. The first two RAAF F-35s will be assigned to the training aircraft pool at Luke Air Force Base, Arizona where pilots from Australia and partner countries will undego conversion to type training. The F-35, with a transformational 5th generation fighter capability, replaces the F/A-18A/B ‘Classic’ Hornets.
From 2018 the first tranche of 72 F-35s will be delivered to 3 Squadron at RAAF Base Williamtown near Newcastle. Over the next five years further deliveries will replace Hornet aircraft in squadrons at Williamtown and at Tindal near Katherine in the Northern Territory. Australia and partner countries are depending on the F-35 to maintain an aur combat edge over potential adversaries. The F-35A’s combination of stealth, advanced sensors, networking and data fusion capabilities, when integrated with other defence systems, are regarded as what makes the difference between current and future air combat capability.

MONEY & PROPERTY
MATTERS Understanding mortgage costs BY MARK BOURIS
The difference between a mortgage and other financial products is that the mortgage is designed to be long-term. With repayment schedules set at 30 years, borrowers repay very large sums on a monthly or fortnightly basis. Because of this large, regular repayment, Australians follow the value of their home and are hawkish about interest rates, which leads to mortgage refinancing as borrowers seek lower interest rates and try to use the equity in their home. But an aspect of mortgages that doesn’t get much attention is fees and costs. Yet this is an area where with a bit of homework and a willingness to bargain, people can save money and get ahead. The first type of mortgage cost to look at is application fees. With a standard variable rate mortgage, lenders charge anywhere from $300 to $600. If you’re paying in the upper reaches of this range, you should absolutely be asking your lender to waive or reduce the fee. Big banks and well-known lenders have an application fee that covers valuation fees and document preparation charges. But when you get down to small lenders — especially those specialising in non-conforming loans — you often see three or four separate charges that could tally to between $700 and $900. Some of these charges might be able to be challenged.
B E AT YO U R BANK
LMI, or lenders mortgage insurance, is typically charged at a rate set by a financial insurer for loans in which the borrower has less than 20 per cent equity. But many mortgage companies attempt to add a solicitor’s preparation fee on top of the LMI, and this should also be queried. Why are you paying for your own solicitor and for their solicitor? If you want to take some of the fees and costs out of your mortgage you should look at what lenders call ‘packages’. With a package, the lender will incentivise you to use their other financial products (usually at least one credit card and one transaction account) by charging a flat annual fee for the mortgage, credit card and transaction account. The best packages may charge you $350 a year for all your fees, but they won’t charge you for using another bank’s ATM and they won’t penalize you for the number of transactions per month. When you add up monthly charges, ATM fees, credit card annual fees and mortgage fees, these packages generally save you money. Just watch out for the packages where the variable interest rate is higher than the standard product. Don’t get lured into a package if you have no use for the other products. Lastly, look closely at the costs of refinancing: if a lender wants your business, you shouldn’t have to pay an application fee. Remember, not all mortgage lenders are flexible on their fees, but many are. If you present as a quality client, lenders want you to take their mortgage. So when it comes to mortgage fees, be informed, be prepared to bargain and if you’re in doubt, ask a mortgage broker. Toyota’s executive director sales and marketing Matthew Callachor said the 750,000 milestone was achieved, as surging demand in 2012 lifted HiLux beyond 40,000 deliveries for the year. “HiLux is an incredible Australian success story - the nation’s best-selling commercial vehicle for the past 22 years in a row and the top-selling 4WD vehicle for the past eight. “It has been Australia’s best-selling vehicle outright on many occasions, including six times last year. It is the only ute to have achieved that landmark. “In fact, if every Australian who has bought a HiLux decided to meet in one place, they would create our sixth-largest city - and, if they brought a friend, the city would be substantially bigger than Adelaide.” Mr Callachor said HiLux had carved an enviable reputation for toughness and reliability in mines, on the land and in fields such as telecommunications, government and rental markets. “It is renowned and respected for being a rugged workhorse and also for being equally at home as a spacious vehicle for families,” he said. The first HiLux arrived in Australia in 1971 (as a 4x2) through then national distributor, Thiess Toyota. HiLux 4x4 variants have been even more popular since arriving in 1980.
Cumulative 4x4 sales have topped 400,000 compared with almost 350,000 of the 4x2 variants. The popularity of HiLux among Australian buyers has gained pace over the years. Annual sales passed 20,000 for the first time in 1998, surpassed 30,000 in 2005 and cracked 40,000 in 2007. Sales have averaged more than 23,000 a year over the past three decades, rising to 36,000 a year during the past 10 years and almost 40,000 a year in the five years to the end of 2012 - even in the face of extreme shortages due to production disruptions caused by natural disasters in 2011. Last year, HiLux achieved its third best sales on record - 40,646. Mr Callachor said HiLux has the highest awareness and desirability among its competitors and is the leader for attributes such as off-road ability, excitement, styling, distinctive, quality, performance, lifestyle and for value. “More than half of all HiLux owners say they are likely to choose another Toyota for their next vehicle, which reflects the strength and quality of HiLux as well as the Toyota brand,” he said.
