The client, a prestigious Calgary law firm, engaged the design team to develop its new offices on 5 ½ floors of a high-rise tower. The design objective was to create a suitable image for a successful law firm that would leave a lasting impression with their clients. The designer chose refined materials in a palette of contrasting black and white, such as white and charcoal lacquer trimmed in dark bronze, white Veneto marble and black basalt flooring. The outstanding feature of the space is a 100-foot millwork screen that angles across the floor plate. The intricate detailing on the screen contrasts against the simplicity of the marble floors and painted glass walls, and creates silhouettes as people walk by. By combining traditional and contemporary pieces, the lighting and furnishings create an impression of a collection carefully curated over time. The new aesthetic conveys a progressive, professional image befitting a successful law firm while avoiding the design clichés associated with their industry.

Gillian Gregory, Intern ARIDO “Intricately detailed millwork in bold colours adds new life to this condo.” Sending their children to university prompted a sophisticated couple to renovate their seven-year-old, 1,600 square foot condo in downtown Toronto. Having settled for “builder standard” while raising their children, the couple now wanted the interiors to reflect their personal tastes and display their modern art collection. The designers used colour blocking, precision-detailed millwork components and strategic lighting to achieve the bold aesthetic their clients desired. The excitement of the ultra-contemporary interior is balanced with stunning views from the floor to ceiling windows. The overall impact is daring, dramatic and fun, yet eminently livable. 12

UNION31 “Sophisticated, elegant and fresh.” When the clients downsized from a large traditional house to a 4,600 square foot condo in Toronto’s Yorkville neighbourhood, they wanted a space that was conducive to entertaining, yet that still felt like a home. The designer gave the areas for entertaining, such as the entry hall and the formal dining room, a sense of drama with rich colours, mahogany panels and a stunning midcentury modern chandelier. The private areas are more intimate yet maintain a sense of continuity with the rest of the home. The couple’s new home is sophisticated and comfortable, and beautifully displays their extensive art collection.

Gillian Gregory, Intern ARIDO “The interplay of solid and empty space is engaging.” For the gut and rebuild of Entro’s new office, the designers didn’t let a tight budget and even tighter timeline restrain their creativity. Working closely with the client, a brand communications and graphics firm, they created an inspiring environment that reflects and enhances the firm’s personality and creativity. Neutral paint and concrete provides a backdrop to display the client’s graphic products. Access to daylight and views of the lake make the space bright, airy and welcoming.

jessica swift, ArIDo “The designers intelligently addressed each demographic and their shopping experience. La maison simons has been an iconic Quebec department store for over 170 years. When the company made plans to expand into other canadian markets, it wanted to differentiate itself from local competitors and new U.s. retailers by creating a unique and memorable shopping experience. For this 100,000 square foot store in the West edmonton mall, the designers devised a shopping environment that allows for unique experiences appealing to six consumer typologies. The design concept focuses on touch points for consumer engagement, including an interactive Photostar booth, digital tablets that display the store catalogues and a video game wall.

Lindsey Wilson, ARIDO Winnie Leung, Intern ARIDO “A creative approach to graphics and materials. For this client, a world leader in marketing communications that amalgamates four different operating companies, the design team created four offices in one building. The designers wanted to embrace the unique brand of each business while maintaining a consistent feel. To respond to rapid growth, the objective was to maximize the efficiency and flexibility of the space. Floor plans are similar in each office for easy wayfinding, while a distinct look captures the persona of each brand. The result is a fresh, open office space that buzzes with creative energy.

When the company moved from four separate suites into a new space in Oakville, they wanted an inspired, cohesive workplace that would increase productivity, streamline workflow and unite their workforce. The open, light-filled space supported the client’s vision of a collaborative work environment where teams could communicate easily. At the centre is an open lounge that breaks up the expanse of space and adds a focal point visible from most corners of the office. Oiled oak hardwood flooring material is featured throughout, adding warmth to contrast the crisp contemporary finishes.

Erin Armstrong, ARIDO Sabrina Ash, ARIDO “Using strong colours to define distinct areas is very effective.” For the renovation of Mediabrands’ office, the design team needed a design solution that would reflect the brand, showcase its corporate culture and attract a younger demographic of employees. It was important that the design elicit excitement from staff, given the change from 50 to 100 per cent open offices and a reduced footprint per employee. The design team used glass screens and pops of colour to create a work environment that feels open, yet intimate. The result is a clean, crisp design that is modern without being trendy, and informal while still looking polished.

Lisa Fulford-Roy, ARIDO Clarissa Lam, ARIDO “Fun and eclectic.” Based on the client’s tagline “elegant garage,” the design for the Toronto office of a multinational technology corporation delivered playfulness on a budget by using inexpensive materials in creative ways. Nods to the office’s Canadian location include log cabin booths in the servery, a divider made from hockey sticks and maple leaf graphics. The resulting space is an environment that sparks the imagination and secures the client’s position as a leading edge employer.

The designers took inspiration from boutique hotels and hospitality environments to create a richly detailed, client-centred space. The glass partitions in the conference area play with the image of a jewel box that opens in stages. High contrasting elements of light/dark, transparent/opaque, glossy/matte contribute to the look of timeless luxury.

The in-house designers were guided by Quadrangle’s new brand, “Inspiration Realized.” Continuous windows on the perimeter and a column-free floor plate allow access to light, and meeting rooms are glazed to enhance sweeping views while providing sound separation. Wide corridors, a fully accessible washroom and branded vision strips all demonstrate the firm’s belief that universal design can enhance design excellence. Quadrangle’s new home demonstrates the firm’s commitment to sustainability and its expertise in universal design.

The design objective was to create an upscale setting with a retail feel to support sales of the developer’s high-end residential units. Andrea Pierre, Intern ARIDO “An open, airy space that stands out from its surroundings. At the heart of a midtown Toronto neighbourhood, the presentation centre for 101 Erskine appeals to young professionals and move-up purchasers looking for a cosmopolitan lifestyle. Confronted with a long, narrow space, the design team transformed it into an open and airy marketing centre that successfully communicates the brand. The strong architectural lines of the final building are repeated throughout the space, such as the copper fins that form a canopy over the second floor closing office. Primarily finished in contrasting black and white, copper accents soften the drama and add a modernist sensibility.

Kasian Architecture Interior Design and Planning Ltd. “The design adds visual interest but still allows visitors to focus on the art.” For the home of Calgary’s largest privately funded, non-commercial gallery, the designer was challenged to create a space that referenced the foundation’s name, esker, meaning a winding ridge of gravel formed by a glacier. The facility also needed to accommodate the gallery’s mandate to deliver innovative art exhibitions and educational events. A custom fiberglass portal reminiscent of a glacier provides a dramatic entrance into the space, and undulating ceilings reinforce the esker theme. A hovering “nest” is visible from the street below, inviting visitors into the gallery.

Refined wood and stone slabs form a clean, contemporary backdrop for modern and Chinese-styled furniture. A rich colour palette of gold, plum and ruby feels lush and inviting. A water motif makes the spa feel serene, while decorative screens and drapery heighten the sense of indulgence. In the guestrooms, technology such as lighting and drapery control systems is seamlessly integrated into the design, allowing guests the utmost comfort and flexibility. Copper draught pipes add sparkle to the simple palette of wood floors and ceilings, concrete walls and black metal. Large wooden tables nod to the traditional beer hall, and abstract images of Mill Street products commissioned from local artists reinforces the theme. The designers sought to emphasize the heritage architecture without sacrificing any modern conveniences. Working around the protected features, such as the slate roof and vaulted ceiling, meant coming up with creative solutions for necessary items such as the kitchen exhaust and the plumbing overhaul. The team created millwork, graphics and lighting elements that support the firm’s design process and inspire the staff. The specialized millwork demonstrates the firm’s commitment to sustainable design by repurposing items from the office’s former location. For the lighting, the team collaborated with industrial designers to create design features from paper, metal and fabric.
