Letter from the publisher With all of us being inundated by a constant flow of news and information about products through the multitude of mediums at our disposal, it is often hard for the A&D community to keep on top of the ever-growing selection, and this reality is what prompted us five years ago to launch the Design Source Guide. The printed and online editions of the Design Source Guide offer a one-stop look at a variety of products and services available to architects and designers. Think of this publication as a breather: sit back, relax, flip through the pages and you will find not only plenty of exciting new materials and products but also the contact information you will need should you wish to specify them. The popularity of the guide has steadily increased since its debut, with circulation more than doubling. Looking at the current issue — a joint publication of Canadian Interiors and Canadian Architect, both the official national association magazines in Canada — it is hard to comprehend that it is already the sixth publication, which again features the popular THINK:Material preview, in collaboration with IIDEX Canada. The THINK:Material exhibit showcases a curated exhibition of the most inventive and sustainable materials from manufacturers around the world, which will be on display during the 2013 IIDEX Canada trade show in Toronto. A sneak preview of some of the most exciting new materials is featured in our editorial section starting on page 16. With many of the unique materials boasting very special tactile or visual components (sometimes hard to grasp just by looking at these printed pages), I therefore recommend a visit to the exhibit on September 26 and 27 at the Direct Energy Centre to see and feel the material yourself. Additionally, keep in mind that our extensive in-depth benchmarking studies into the size, practices, growth, compensation, billings and commissions of interior designers and architects are still available. With very little information previously available about the Canadian A&D industry, these joint research studies by IDC and Canadian Interiors for the interior design industry, and Architecture Canada/RAIC and Canadian Architect for the architecture industry, offer the most comprehensive industry research currently available in Canada. For those of us who look forward to IIDEX Canada coming around again each September, our anticipation in 2013 is quickened. Building on the success of last year’s collaboration, the IDC (Interior Designers of Canada) and Architecture Canada | RAIC will again co-present IIDEX Canada. Canada’s National Design + Architecture Exposition & Conference, IIDEX will be bigger and better than ever in 2013. For the past 29 years, IIDEX Canada has been the country’s most comprehensive expo and conference for the design, construction and management of the built environment – offering trade professionals (working in all areas of design, from office, hospitality and healthcare to institutional, residential and retail) the latest products, education and networking opportunities. The show’s

multidisciplinary focus continues to expand with the addition of the co-located International Union of Architects Public Health Group Forum to IIDEX. This is the first time this prestigious international forum has been held in Canada, with an expected attendance of 200 leading architects and designers – leaders who shape healthcare facilities globally. To complement this influx of healthcare design professionals, IIDEX has enlarged the Healthcare Design Expo for 2013. Other expos-within-the-expo abound, covering a multitude of subjects: Lighting Hospitality Canada, Architecture Canada, Landscape Architecture, Textile Design, Retail Design and Workplace Design. Which brings me to my personal favourite: the Material World Expo, an exposition for material suppliers of all products, including glass, wood, metal,
plastics, laminates, stone and textile. It includes THINK:Material, one of IIDEX Canada’s most popular exhibits, featuring innovative materials from around the world. These materials are collected by the IIDEX team, working with university undergraduates from the architectural science and interior design programs – namely Jamie Kwan, Helena Skonieczna and Bahar Zaeem (all from Ryerson University); Vivien Lin (OCAD University); Jasmine Parmar (Sheridan College); and Andrea Schwebel (University of Western) – along with guest curator Jim Salazar and a CEU education program featuring material expert Marie O’Mahony, professor of Advanced Fashion + Textiles from OCAD University. In the following pages, we present 47 fantastic materials, more than half of which are new to IIDEX Canada this fall
(the rest were highlights of last year’s show). They come from companies here, there and everywhere – from Canada and the United States to Italy, Spain and Germany to Australia, Chile, China and the Philippines. Intriguing items include newsprint recycled into a unique interior wallcovering; concrete that allows for the transfer of photography and graphics; and synthetic skin recognizable by its wrinkled surface and organic appearance. The OctoTerra handmade decorative panel program is comprised of two design groups. Pictured above is OctoTerra Madura, which are thinly sliced tree branches bonded to a plywood substrate. Every panel is unique. Several other designs, made from palmwood ,are also offered. Seven designs, made from coconut shell, in a mosaic format, comprise the OTM series. The shell is cut, finished, and glued to a mesh backing, so all designs can be radiused to clad columns and curved substrates.
