The Material Connection Showcasing innovative materials at the 34th annual IIDEXCanada Now in its eighth year, THINK:Material is a popularspecial feature exhibition that draws massive crowds of accomplished designers and architects to explore a rich collection of materials on the floor of IIDEXCanada, showcasing the latest, most innovative and sustainable materials collected from across the globe. Design processes associated with the conceptualization and manufacture of materials is constantly evolving. An idea for a new material that may have been prohibitively expensive just a few years ago can now be successfully brought to market. Paired with an online library—thinkmaterial.ca— THINK:Material is a year round resource for designers with access to an online database of unique materials and collections. The website showcases a wide array of materials for commercial and residential applications including: glass, metal, wood, plastics, laminates, stone and textiles. The 2017 collection was curated largely through the efforts of students from the Ryerson School of Interior Design: Lucy Zhang, Jenny Lang, Yiqing Li and Marnie Dumouchelle who were guided by the assistance of Monica Polo, Design Centre Resource Specialist, Ryerson School of Interior Design. The Formica Group design team was inspired by young designers at the London Design Festival, who explored the concept of how to reuse waste. The terrazzo visual is reborn as a sustainable and intriguing interior design concept. These two patterns are new industry inventions, utilizing small fragments of post-production solid color paper from Formica® Laminate that would otherwise have gone to waste. Each sheet is unique, with a texture that enhances the real paper effect of this design.

The design team discovered the delightful creation of ink bubbles through research. Blending art and science, printing inks were mixed with soap and bubbles, and then blown on industrial grade paper to create three original bubble designs. Layer after layer of bubbles were blown and popped to create the final look of the Bubble patterns. These patterns are a fun and spontaneous manipulation of the traditional printing process used for making laminate.
