A. Organized along with T_A_I Research Group, the international Questionable Traditions Wokshop. West Kowloon Lyric Theatre Complex, 2014 to present “A centre of excellence showcasing the best of Hong Kong and international dance and theatre, the Lyric Theatre Complex will comprise a 1,450-seat lyric theatre, a 600-seat medium theatre and a 270-seat studio theatre. The complex will also house extensive rehearsal facilities and a Resident Company Centre that will serve as an exploration, development and collaboration hub for dance companies and artists in Hong Kong. Located with the waterfront to the south and facing Artist Square to the north, the Lyric Theatre Complex design takes full advantage of its location, providing sweeping views in both directions from its large glass windows. Above all the Lyric Theatre Complex will be a venue that is active at all times; with eight dance and rehearsal studios plus one large rehearsal hall, resident company offices, an information and ticketing centre, restaurants, a roof garden and an internal walkway that takes visitors from the waterfront to Artist Square, the Lyric Theatre Complex will be an inviting vibrant creative space for performers and public alike. The Lyric Theatre Complex is scheduled to be completed in 2021.�

“The Financial Street (Hailun) Center is located at the crossroads of two metro lines, providing excellent connection to public transport and therefor a desirable location for office and retail. The general massing of the project consists of a 33-storey tower and a series of smaller mixed-use pavilions. Placed as objects in the flow of commuters, the buildings organise outdoor spaces of different scales and provides a platform for a variety of urban activities. The facade design emphasises the buildings as singular objects. The curved geometry of the buildings, with strong vertical lines, anchors the building within the city. The faceted and coloured texture of the facades provides a changing appearance when approached from different directions, adding to the dynamics of the location in Shanghai.�

“UNStusio’s design for the World Horticultural Expo 2014 There Pavilion consists of the Main Expo Hall, a Performance Hall, Conference Center and a Media center. The design focuses on the relationship between Science and Nature. Whilst scientific achievement serves as an inspiration, the design communicates the essential generative and structural principle of nature through architectural gesture. The buildings become gently absorbed in the landscape, whilst maintaining their individual identities. The architecture of the Theme Pavilion further responds to the dominant skyline of the mountain surrounding the Masterplan by means of carefully composed roofscapes on the individual buildings. These roofs are envisioned as elevated landscape plateaus, each addressing a different portion of the Masterplan with its inclination and terracing, providing panoramic views which extend far into the surrounding landscape.“

i01 CC Cloud Cities // Exhibition Design and Installations Studio Tomas Saraceno, Berlin During my collaboration with Studio Tomas Saraceno, I have dived in the previously uncharted waters of art, exhibition design and public installations. It has been an exciting and a fascinating experience that introduced me to a fast paced environment of endless creativity. It has broken the time boundaries of tectonics in architecture and spatial design. It has given shape to lighter than air structures that later on shaped my perception of the not so distant future of the anthropocene and the postanthropocene. It has raised questions about our evolution as a species and it has brought attention to the vastness of our atmosphere and our relationship with it as human beings. It combined a sense of pragmatism with effervescent creativity and it has also tough me patience and the beauty of permanent change.

SLOW DOOR [Methexis Studio] Milan Design Week - Lexus Design Award Milan, Italy 2016 The slow door is conceived to investigate the ‘inbetween space’ - the space of anticipation. The idea is to design an object that could possibly influence the way we experience threshold as a space in itself. In particular, the slow door addresses the designed event of ‘delaying the transition’ through the threshold and prolonging the moment of haptic interface.
The challenge throughout the design process has been to ascertain the degree of intervention required to manifest or amplify the experience of the ‘inbetween space’ whilst still preserving the functionality of the object. The slow door consists of 252 cubic blocks of which 251 are typical blocks with dimensions of 100 mm X 100mm X 100mm and one atypical block which has an integrated door handle. The units are organized over a grid of 21 rows and 12 columns. [Project done in collaboration with Deepak Jawahar]

T
he Play Mincu Pavilion is a semiotic, interactive installation producing architectural stamps, which speak about the two modes of the architectural profession: the artistic aspect - esthetic and conceptual, and the bureaucratic, judicial aspect, which generates social norms and values. The concept of the pavilion revolves around the personality of Ion Mincu, creator of modern Romanian architecture who was also active in the political and the bureaucratic side of this field. The exhibition itself has two designs: as cultural device for mediating contemporary Romanian architecture, and ironic decentering of the respect given to the architect’s profession in some parts of the world. The postage stamp and the notary seal embosser are the symbolic vectors of the exhibition. Visitors can play with these, producing for example notary dry stamps that in real life invest papers with official authority, but in the context of the Play-Mincu Pavilion reframe bureaucracy and its normative forces within a cultural act mediating architecture. Concept: Applying nodal surfaces of degenerate states in optimizing circulation flows Ambition: Optimizing the passenger’s and visitor’s circulation flows in a multifunctional cruise-ship terminal Context and statement WHY CHOOSE FAMAGUSTA TO BUILD AN INTERNATIONAL CRUISE SHIP TERMINAL?

In 1932, Famagusta was the only deep sea water port in Cyprus and soon it became the only international port on the island. In 1974, after the Turkish invasion that led to the massive abandonment of Varosha (a flourishing neighborhood of Famagusta), the UN put Varosha under military restriction and closed the whole area down. All the commercial routes between the Turkish administration of the island and the rest of the world were cut. Today, the only boats anchoring in the port are local fisherman boats or other small scale local commercial boats. The political isolation turned the city into a no man’s land. Q: What should there to be done after a future political understanding among the Greek and the Turkish administrations? A: From my point of view, a leap into a hybrid world of reality and utopia; bringing back to life the international port by proposing a touristic and a small local commercial node in the vicinity of the old city center - an international cruise ship terminal. Q: What would that lead to? A: An economical growth that would be able to enhance and to partly support the revitalization of the abandoned neighborhood of Varosha.

Project insight The site is part of the commercial port, it is placed in the vicinity of the old center of the city and it is benefiting from having access to the main roads and to an already existing port infrastructure.

To satisfy all the needs of a passenger terminal, I focused on developing a concept that would bunch together the solution for three of the main issues: the continuous flux of arriving and departing tourists plus the optimum structural solution that would also correspond to the spatial and functional needs of the program. I began doing my research on minimal surfaces. After a series of trial and error tests, I ended up focusing on one certain family of minimal surfaces that would answer to most of the key problems: Nodal Surfaces of Degenerate States.
FINAL CONFIGURATION OF THE CIRCULATION NODE
The next step in the designing process was to fit all the parameters into one coherent organism. This determined the relationship of the building with the site, the optimization of the interior spaces and the calculation of the structural needs and dimensions.
In order to facilitate and to encourage the people to walk through the terminal and experience the continuity of the space, the concrete structural skin was doubled by a second layer of wood. This transformed the whole structure into an open walkable “terrain�.

FUNCTIONS From a functional point of view, the complex gathers together all the features of an international cruise ship terminal, with two decks suited for both, arrivals and departures, luggage rooms, cafeterias, a landscaped roof terrace that is accessible for both passengers and visitors, with panoramic views oriented towards the old city, the neighborhood of Varosha and towards the sea. There is also an area dedicated to offices and conference halls. The underground level is divided in two main areas, one dedicated to commercial use and the other being used as a parking lot. From the commercial area there is a direct access to the lower deck of the terminal, where a boat exhibition hall can be found.

E01 minimal surface study The aim of this exercise was to translate the physical properties of a hand-made model, into a digital 3D model. We made several experiments out of which we extracted the general law and translated the information into an algorithm. In this particular case we used Mathematica 7.0 to reproduce the Riemann minimal surface.

W01 IoA. ASC Architecture Spring Challenge 2012 Die Angewandte, Wien
The Architecture Spring Challenge 2012 is an international design workshop for architecture students interested in exploring integrated digital design and fabrication tools at IoA - die Angewandte Wien.
Integrated Digital Design and Fabrication In this workshop, architectural design was taught as an integrated, multidisciplinary process. Following this tradition, the design process was enriched with structural testing of parametric models in Karamba, a structural analysis plug-in for Grasshopper. The handling of virtual simulation methods in the fields of parametric and digital production was the primary focus of the workshop. This weeklong intensive workshop resulted in a full-scale built structure. Format and Output The Architecture Spring Challenge was organized as a weeklong program with 22 international students and 6 tutors. Introduction to Rhino, Grasshopper, and Karamba was followed by project design development and daily reviews of student group projects, which were assessed in competition style. The selected project was fabricated and assembled as a group effort. The event closed with an exhibition and presentation with guests. The output was a parametrically designed and digitally produced human-scale structure fabricated out of corrugated cardboard.

Day1:
Workshop started out with an incredible amount of people. Both students and architects seemed very interested of this event, which of course made the whole pre-event time worth its while. The day started off with the three of us (Tudor Cosmatu, Andrei Raducanu and Irina Bogdan) and our dear friend Alexander Kalachev giving a short introductory lecture on parametric design and fabrication methodes and talking about our thesis projects approaches. A short introduction into Rhino followed, allowing (most of the people) to get a glance on what this software is able to do. Grasshopper introduction and tutored examples followed. This proved to be the hardest part, but we definitely believe everyone got the point and can start discovering the potential of it further. Workshop
Day2:
More tutored examples followed during the whole day, increasing the number of bedazzled people. Things started to get messy towards noon, but in the end everyone got the point, which was a great deed. We went through a series of examples ranging from object to potential urban plan scenario.

Day3:
Following our previous presentations we decided to let the people start to discover the software on their own. They had to work in teams of 5 and they were given the task to develop a system (knowing that they will have to deal with – flat sheets of 6mm cardboard) which had to have a chosen function (although this was not our biggest interest, given the workshop scope). Alex Cristal from our new best friends SPOT DESIGN came to join us and brought with him one of his babies (a 600x450mm laser cutter). Our intent for this day was that people were supposed to see how such a machine works and how the process of sending files to factory has to be dealt with. People started regaining interest and enthusiasm and worked hard on getting things done. Later that night we met Bence Pap and Andrei Gheorghe and went out for a beer in order to discuss details regarding the following days.

Day4:
Bence and Andrei delighted the participants and us with a presentation about previous workshops and projects of their own. Madalina Dumitru marketing director of RUUKKI for Romania and Bulgaria (our platinum sponsor – which believed in the success of the workshop and gave us the chance to make it happen) gave a short presentation about some of their latest works and softwares and explained why RUUKKI is interested in the participants work. The whole day past pretty fast and towards the evening we had the participants present their 2 days developed proposals. We were very excited about the results. Unfortunately (given the remaining time) we asked them to vote for one project each, so that in the end we can build at least one. After a long discussion between ourselves (tutors) we decided we might have time to built 3 projects fitting in 3 different types of approaches – emergence, sculptural endeavor and component based pavilion. The finalists were named: VIRULENCE, WISHBONE and hex[igloo. Immediately teams merged and prepared for the final run.

Day5:
People started working early in the morning, merging concepts, ideas and methods in order to make everything work correctly. The team of tutors went through all the projects trying to make each and every one of them work. Late that night the VIRULENCE project got sent to the laser cutter, while the Wishbone and hex[igloo were still struggling to prepare the files for laser cutting.

Day6:
While the VIRULENCE people were waiting for final pieces and starting the assembly on site the other teams were struggling to make the files for production as intelligent as possible.
Thanks to
our good friend (dj/vj) Cristi aka CRID we had the chance to stay up because of his nice speakers and amplifier. Soon the university square was covered in the furious beats of cristi’s playlist.

Day7:
After a long night for the laser cutter and for Alex (SPOT DESIGN), most of the WISHBONE pieces were done and more than half of the hex[igloo components arrived. Soon a very interesting configuration emerged: some of the people were involved in putting the pieces together on site, while the so called FACTORY was working hard on putting the components together. Half of our tutoring staff had to leave, so a quick ceremony took place where participants received their participation certificate. Days and nights started to merge and to become one (a thing we really enjoyed). The Wishbone got finished towards the end of the night.

Day8:
To our surprise a lot of people (all of them) showed up for the final run in assembling the final pieces of the hex[igloo. Although our estimation was to finish towards 6 pm it proved to be rather wrong. Towards the end of the night the hex[igloo started to force itself into place waiting for the final rows to come into place . The work and fun continued until late in the morning. Glue guns started running out of bullets, jamming and giving up on the tough job they had to perform, tapes were being reused and people were tired. 6pm (our previous deadline) quickly became 6 am, but with the enthusiasm and interest of the whole group, the hex[igloo got finished as the sun was rising, allowing our final guest (Alex) to get to his flight on time. As a final conclusion we have to say that we (as tutors/organizers of this event) are extremely proud of the results and the way people worked together. Although we placed the mockups without any permission in the main universities hallway, we are happy that everyone was glad to see the results.
Between the 10th and the 12th of June, HEXigloo spent the night under the blue sky, as part of the Street Delivery festival.

ADVANCED DIGITAL DESIGN AND FABRICATION METHODS WORKSHOP

LOCATION: UAUIM terrace_Academiei Street, Bucharest AMBITION_Build a temporary wooden structure that relates to an existing concrete spiral wall built on the “Ion Mincu” Universitie’s terrace. MEANS_CNC milling machine . Wood pannels . Rhinoceros + Grasshopper AVAILABLE TIME_1 week
CONCEPT The way we chose to relate to the spiral like structure was to continue the curve path of the existing geometry and introduce the Fibonaci sequence in the design work flow. ORGANIZATION One of the most challenging issues of the workshop was to condense the design and fabrication processes in one week. In order to be able to do so, we divided the assignment in three and worked in teams. Each team was given a certain task: the first dealt with designing the beams, the second dealt with the enclosure and the third team designed the floor. FABRICATION In order to be able to fabricate the pavilion, we had to deal with the components separately. We prepared the beam files for the cnc milling machine, the skin pannels for the laser cutter and the floor’s wooden beams for the electric chainsaw.
