Recent News New Jean Butler Cross-Disciplinary Commission

In a three-way partnership with New York’s Danspace Project and Dublin’s Project Arts Centre, we co-commissioned the iconic dancer/ choreographer Jean Butler in a new piece with Northern Irish composer/cellist Neil Martin, this is an Irish dance, at Danspace in November. The New York Times called this world premiere “beautiful,” “powerful,” and “absorbing.”

Commission of Dead Centre’s Chekov’s First Play

Building on the success of the Obie-winning triumph Lippy, we were proud to co-commission the innovative Dublin theatremaker Dead Centre’s latest work, Chekhov’s First Play, which premiered in the Dublin Theatre Festival in October. The Irish Times called it “a brilliant endeavour...riveting to watch.”

Muldoon’s Picnic

Little Feat pianist Bill Payne was among the many special guests who dropped by Muldoon’s Picnic, our monthly gathering of some of New York’s most notable artists curated by the legendary, inimitable poet, and songwriter Paul Muldoon. Visit pages 21 – 22 to see the lineup of artists Paul has in store for us all this spring.

U.S. Premiere of Underneath

Award-winning writer and performer Pat Kinevane and Fishamble: The New Play Company returned to Irish Arts Center with Underneath, following the runaway international success of Forgotten (spring 2010) and Silent (fall 2012). Underneath was listed on Forbes’ “Best Theater Of 2015: Broadway And Beyond,” and The New York Times called it “[a] great rushing river of Irish tale-telling.”

Season Launch Honoring New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito We kicked off our season by honoring New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito at the home of Consul General of Ireland Barbara Jones with Council Members Daniel Dromm, Jimmy Van Bramer, and Elizabeth Crowley. On a beautiful late summer evening, children from our Hell’s Kitchen community and local Police Athletic League presented the Speaker with a piece of artwork from their exhibition Book of Me devised at IAC. Thanks, in part, to our Consulate supporters and our wonderful Irish caucus of Council Members including our own Council Member Corey Johnson, we were proud to launch our most ambitious fall season yet.

“There is a new

Ireland and a new America dawning. We need a place where the new voices of Irish America can be nourished… and celebrated…and born. Irish Arts Center is that place.”

- GABRIEL BYRNE

2016 marks the dawn of a new century for Ireland, for Irish America, and for your Irish Arts Center. This commemorative year, which includes the 100th Anniversary of the 1916 Rising, offers us the chance to reflect on a moment in history, while continuing to push our story forward and outward. Indeed IAC16 celebrates the beginning of a new cultural century as much as the end of another. Through great art, we proclaim a new Ireland and a new Irish America. We empower the inheritors and interrogators of Ireland’s great legacy of innovation. We open our doors to today’s includers and independence-seekers, ready to tell our evolving story for a new generation. This year also marks a turning point in our campaign to build a permanent home. With $47 million raised, we truly are “Almost Home.” But we can’t do it without you. To commemorate this new Irish and Irish American century, we hope you will consider making a legacy gift in whatever amount is meaningful for you. Recognition opportunities are available at all levels. Please visit irishartscenter.org or contact us at 212-757-3318 x205 for more information. In the meantime, we invite you to peruse the pages that follow and curate your own IAC16 experience. Remember, the new Irish Arts Center isn’t just a building. It’s now! Thank you—and we look forward to seeing you throughout 2016!

It’s October 1978, Pope John Paul the First is not long dead, autumn is closing in and cobbler Pat Farnon has “some business” to do in town. The Man In The Woman’s Shoes follows Pat as he walks the five miles from his white cottage to town and back again. He meets unforgettable characters along the way—water diviner Huby Patterson, GAA enthusiast extraordinaire Kitsy Rainey, big voiced Casimir Marshall, and an array of farmers all named Gilmartin and Kemp. “It’s half time, there’s a pipe band on the field and the smell of oranges all of a sudden— ah, this is the life!” The Man In The Woman’s Shoes was originally commissioned by the Hawk’s Well Theatre in Sligo with Sligo County Council Arts Service for the Bealtaine Festival in 2012 and last year toured to venues around Ireland. The Corn Exchange, one of Ireland’s leading independent theater companies, makes its New York debut with Annie Ryan’s adaptation of the award-winning novel by Eimear McBride. The sold-out hit of the 2014 Dublin Theatre Festival and 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, A Girl is a Halfformed Thing follows, with vivid intensity and originality, the inner narrative of a girl from womb to age twenty.

ACTING EXCELLENCE EDINBURGH FESTIVAL FRINGE 2015

In a career-defining performance, Aoife Duffin portrays a character of astonishing resilience and intelligence, determined to rise above her deprived childhood in Ireland. Rebellious and unrelenting, with biting wit and brilliant spark, McBride writes with an urgency and honesty that “transposes effortlessly to the stage, as if this is where it belongs” (The Guardian UK).

DANCE New York Live Arts and Irish Arts Center present Arcane Collective

Return to Absence

APRIL 14 – 16 | 7:30 PM Tickets from $15 AT NEW YORK LIVE ARTS 219 W 19th Street, New York, NY 10011 With mesmerizing concentration and an urgent kinetic dexterity, the work of Arcane Collective pushes the boundaries of conventional contemporary dance, by altering perceptions of the body, space, and time. Founded by dance artists Morleigh Steinberg and Oguri, this season Arcane Collective delves into the Samuel Beckett trilogy Molloy, Malone Dies, and The Unnamable. In reverence to Beckett, Return to Absence embodies the resonant images and wrought emotions characteristic to these remarkable stories. Constructing a fluent language of movement and environments as abstract and absurd as Beckett’s unparalleled composition of words, the dance weaves a non-linear tale of decrepit persistence and playful futility of life at the end of its tether.

“Return to Absence is a bold and beautiful production, one which is extraordinarily moving, meticulously articulated and perfectly executed. This is a show that demands and deserves to be seen.” – THE IRISH EXAMINER

DANCE

Masters in Collaboration X Colin Dunne Meets Nic Gareiss CONVERSATION Audiences will be welcomed into the experience for an exclusive midweek conversation. WEDNESDAY, MAY 11 | 7:30 PM FREE PERFORMANCES MAY 14-15 | 8 PM $24 general / $20 members

Our first artists’ residency began in 2008, and the acclaimed Masters in Collaboration series returns for its tenth iteration breaking more new ground, pairing two IAC favorites: the iconic and innovative Irish dance legend Colin Dunne (Riverdance, Dancing on Dangerous Ground, Out of Time) and the thrilling, expressive percussive dancer Nic Gareiss (This is How we Fly). Over a week-long residency, Colin and Nic will collaborate as dancers and choreographers, developing new work, inviting audiences into some of their most intimate and surprising moments in the creative process.

AT IRISH ARTS CENTER 553 West 51st Street, New York, NY 10019

Colin Dunne is a leading figure in the world of traditional Irish dance. Perhaps best

known internationally for his performances and choreography in Riverdance and Dancing on Dangerous Ground, he has been forging a new creative path since his time as artist in residence at University of Limerick where he completed an MA in contemporary dance in 2002. Since then he has worked as an independent performer, choreographer, and teacher.

“For Colin Dunne—one-time Riverdance performer— tradition is something to be carefully maintained…But that doesn’t mean he can’t deconstruct step dancing and put it together again in his own inimitable fashion.” –THE IRISH TIMES

Nic Gareiss is a Michigan-born dancer, musician, and dance researcher. His choreographic

work re-imagines movement as a musical activity, recasting dance as medium that appeals to both eyes and ears. Gareiss draws from many percussive dance traditions to weave together a dance technique facilitating his love of improvisation, traditional dance footwork vocabulary, and musical collaboration. Nic holds a degree in Anthropology from Central Michigan University and a MA in Ethnochoreology from the University of Limerick.

“The human epitome of the unbearable lightness of being...the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene.” –THE IRISH TIMES

Launched by Irish Arts Center in 2008, the Masters in Collaboration series fosters artistic partnerships outside the pressures of the marketplace in an effort to stimulate creativity, reward risk, and awaken a dynamic conversation across genres, generations, and geographies. Past series have included Paul Brady with Sarah Siskind, Andy Irvine with John Doyle, Bill Whelan with Athena Tergis, Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill with Gregory Harrington, Iarla Ó Lionáird with Ivan Goff, Seamus Begley with Joanie Madden, Karan Casey with Aoife O’Donovan, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh with Cleek Schrey, and Dana Lyn with Louis de Paor. Colin Gee and Angie Smalis appear in two distinct works as part of Abrons’ Travelogues dance series curated by Laurie Uprichard. Chaplet of Roses (2014) is drawn from a 15th century fragmentary tapestry from the Netherlands, “Honor Making a Chaplet of Roses,” featuring an allegory of courtly love told through the simultaneous action of four characters. Created in Ireland, the work explores a contemporary interpretation of the allegory as a notion of individual and community morality, by framing shifts between public and private life. They Go Out in Joy (2016), is a series of performance portraits drawn from photographs of Irish emigrants taken just prior to their departure from Cobh, Ireland in the 1920’s, when Cobh was the major port of emigration. Set against the background of present day Cobh, Gee and Smalis portray all the roles, shifting between the public and private lives of each persona at a single moment of pause—imagining what has just happened or is about to happen.

Recovering 1916 in Images and Stories TUESDAY, MARCH 22 | 7:30 PM $20 general / $16 members

AT IRISH ARTS CENTER 553 West 51st Street, New York, NY 10019

Performed by Richard Kearney and Sheila Gallagher With original music composed and performed by Dana Lyn Through an interplay of storytelling, animation, music, and poetry, Twinsome Minds—which takes its title from a phrase in the novel Finnegans Wake—re-imagines a series of micronarratives surrounding 1916 in Dublin and the WWI battlefields of Belgium. The stories and images of eclipsed history concentrate on twinned pairs—family members, neighbors, school friends, lovers—who ended up on opposite sides during this time of great upheaval in BritishIrish relations. The various scenes explore crossings of memory and imagination, anecdote and legend, history and myth—as well as loyalty and love. Performed and created by philosopher Richard Kearney and moving images multi-media artist Sheila Gallagher, Twinsome Minds: Recovering 1916 mines what is often lost behind official historical accounts and acts of commemoration, and proposes a transformative work of interpreting the Rising for a new generation. Baume

AT IRISH ARTS CENTER 553 West 51st Street, New York, NY 10019

Our third season of Debut Voices kicks off with a reading from one of the most intriguing new voices in Irish literature, Sara Baume. Poignant, perceptive, and powerfully lyrical, Baume’s award-winning debut novel Spill Simmer Falter Wither opens in the springtime as two misfits—one an eccentric loner and the other a one-eyed dog—forge an unlikely relationship. In a tired seaside town, these outcasts find solace in each other. Part Kjersti Skomsvold, part Patrick McCabe, Spill Simmer Falter Wither is a wholly different kind of love story, one that spans the four seasons echoed in the novel’s title. Written with tremendous empathy and insight, Baume’s debut captures the incremental destructive essence of loneliness, and confirms the talent so emphatically acknowledged by the astounding hat trick of prizes. Previous Debut Voices authors include Johanna Lane, author of Black Lake; Darragh McKeon, author of All That Is Solid Melts Into Air; Eimear McBride, author of A Girl Is A Half-formed Thing; and Colin Barrett, author of Young Skins

Years later, these five extraordinary newsreaders reunited to bring together their voices and stories on stage for a most unusual and inspiring event that has entertained and moved audiences across Ireland—and now comes to our Donaghy Theatre for a special engagement. Assuming the characters in Murphy’s books, At Five in the Afternoon: My Battle with Male Cancer, The House of Pure Being, and his best-selling collections of poetry The Republic of Love and Chaplet of Roses, the quartet share deeply insightful reflections on love and sex, friendship and family, and celebrate the happy though fragile human spirit triumphing against the odds.

Fortune’s Wheel

Presented by Irish Arts Center and Irish Film Institute TUESDAY, MAY 17 | 7 PM DIRECTED BY JOE LEE $12 general / $10 members / Free for Young Patrons ($125) members and higher Fortune’s Wheel brings to life the remarkable, implausible story of Bill Stephens, an ordinary young Dubliner in the 1950s with an extraordinary ambition: to become an international circus star as a lion tamer. The documentary tells the love story about Bill and his young, beautiful wife Mai, from East Wall. Their double act, “Jungle Capers, Bill Stephens and Lovely Partner,” was a series of deathdefying feats with a troupe of lions and dogs designed to thrill audiences in the circus tent and on the theatre stage. With this act they hoped to move to the United States, but things went terribly wrong when, in November 1951, one of their animals escaped. The story gained national and international attention and also set in train a series of events that would lead to tragedy. It is only now—after 60 years of both myth making and silence—that two families and a community have come together to tell the story in full. 76 minutes, Ireland, 2015 Film Fleadh Foundation (Craic Fest) and Cuala 2016 present

Come celebrate the Irish language with the Irish Arts Center! Voices of the Gaeltacht are inherently unique. Voice is a medium through which we express ourselves and our personality. It is this use of a language which is preserved to this day in the Gaeltachts of Ireland (districts in Ireland where Gaelic is spoken as a daily language) that we celebrate during Féile na Gaeilge, IAC’s annual Irish Language Day. Meet other fellow language enthusiasts and explore the voices of the Gaeltacht through education, literature, and storytelling, with an awareness of the traditional Gaelic speaker at its heart. Visit irishartscenter.org for a detailed schedule.

The Architecture and Playability of Theatre with Mikel Murfi

As in Th seen The e Man In Wom Sho an’s es

Back by Popular Demand in an Extended Version! No previous directing or acting experience necessary; interest in theatre and in directing required. Participants will be expected to take part as actors in the workshop.

In this lecture/demonstration writer, actor, and director Mikel Murfi talks about his work and influences with particular reference to his recent works with writer/director Enda Walsh and designer Sabine Dargent. He also examines the nature of creativity and talks about his practice as a director—the techniques he uses to help actors create more freely, to prepare them for the rehearsal room. It’s a fluid, wide-ranging discussion followed by a question and answer session and maybe even some participation. Mikel Murfi is an actor, writer, director based in Ireland. He trained in Ecole Jacques Lecoq, Paris and is a certified teacher of the Lecoq pedagogy. His work with Enda Walsh on The Walworth Farce, The New Electric Ballroom, Penelope, Misterman and most recently Ballyturk has been a particularly fruitful. The works all been presented by St Ann’s Warehouse, Brooklyn. The New York Times said of his direction of The Walworth Farce that you “feel that you’ve walked in on a Hibernian Three Stooges routine, directed by a drunken Dadaist.”

EDUCATION

If you could only watch two movies for the rest of your life, what would they be? True Romance. I just love that film. I love the performances in that film. And Taxi Driver. Is there a difference in the way you approach an Englishspeaking acting role versus an Irish-speaking role? Psychologically, it’s always the same: we’re all humans. It would always come from the human point of view. At the end of the day, you’re kind of portraying humanity. What is the best part of living in New York? Opportunity is the best part of living in New York. Opportunity to experience such a wide range of cultures, food, music, people, literature, film… the world at your doorstep. I look at festivals and so much work comes from New York. The grind that it is to live here, to exist here, creates some kind of a well that you can draw on creatively. What is the worst part of living in New York? Rats. What would you say the best movie for an Irish language beginner would be? There’s a great short movie, about ten or twelve minutes long: Yu Ming Is Ainm Dom (Yu Ming Is My Name). It’s about a Chinese man who decides to learn Irish, and wants to come and visit Ireland, and speak the Irish that he’s learned and he gets to Dublin and no one can understand him and some people even think he’s speaking Chinese. And the reason I feel it’s really good for beginners is, firstly, it’s a really clever story, secondly, it’s really funny and endearing and thirdly, it kind of depicts or portrays where the Irish language is today in Ireland.

ANNUAL MEMBERS PARTY

“We must look ahead to the next 100 years and ask ourselves how we will sustain Ireland and Irish America’s evolving story and incredible cultural legacy. How are we ensuring that we give voice to the next Wilde, Synge, Joyce, or Heaney; provide a stage for the next Beckett, O’Neill, or O’Rowe to emerge; offer a platform for artistic innovators like Hayes, Cahill, and Ó Raghallaigh; and create the home for future generations to come together and celebrate their heritage?” –GABRIEL BYRNE
