SPRING 2020
IRISHARTSCENTER.ORG 1
The Next Chapter Dear Friends, 2020. How fitting that this should be the year in which our vision comes fully into focus. Our new building—an endeavor as complex as the New York construction industry and as simple as Peter Brook’s The Empty Space—becomes a reality this autumn. No stopping us now. It has been a journey of discovery. Of flaring out and honing in. Of seeing and finding our position. Of clarifying our values and ethos. Of trying new things. Of failing. Of succeeding. Of failing better! Of succeeding better! (Apologies to Mr. Beckett.) As of this writing, the building is now fully enclosed, its magical balance of intimacy and scale already evident. Its promise so clear, just waiting to be fulfilled. Just waiting for us. Just waiting for you. The New Irish Arts Center will reflect Ireland’s emerging position as a modern European country, and build on its legacy as a land of poets. It will provide a home for innovation, collaboration, and development in the world’s cultural capital, a place for people of all backgrounds to come together to celebrate our common humanity in the environment of Irish hospitality for which Ireland—and Irish Arts Center—is renowned. Our Opening Season—to be announced in the coming months—will be both a culmination and a new beginning. A statement of promise and possibility as a new cultural institution is reborn in New York.
ON THE COVER: New Irish Arts Center Flexible Space in construction 9/28/2019

We are developing and considering a bounty of offerings that establish deep emotional connections, create excitement, and provide a canvas for innovation and collaboration—while promoting values of inclusion, providing a unique experience for audiences, and projecting the dynamism of today’s Ireland and Irish America. We will bring the new physical properties of the facility to life in an exciting way and engage new audiences. Between now and then, we are proud to share with you our final few months in our 51st Street home, before it closes temporarily to make way for the new building and prepare for its own Phase Two renovation and restoration planned for 2021. We invite you to join us at this transformative time. If you have not yet become a member, please become a member (see pages 41-42). If you have not yet made a commitment to the capital campaign, please lay your claim to this incredible moment (see pages 3-4). Support at all levels is eagerly welcomed. We have much work left to ensure the success of the New Irish Arts Center for generations to come. That future is bright because of the thousands of brilliant, courageous artists whose imagination fills every empty space, and the audiences who must be there for magic to happen. To the next chapter of it all,
Aidan Connolly Executive Director
Pauline Turley Vice Chair

What’s Next?
Opening Season and Phase Two After a decade of visioning, planning, and lots and lots of fundraising, together we have raised more than $60 million to make the new building on 11th Avenue a reality, all while more than quintupling our Annual Fund to grow our programming and capacity. Together we dreamed big, looked ahead, aimed high, planned carefully, and achieved one of the largest Irish cultural philanthropic accomplishments in history. Now comes the really fun part! With the opening of our landmark 11th Avenue building just around the corner, we invite everyone to make history with us by supporting our campaign at any level that is meaningful for you. Here are three ways you can join us at this exciting and important moment.
Support or Sponsor an Opening Season Program In a few short months, we will announce the programming for our Opening Season—our first expression of what is now groundbreakingly possible in our new home. Please help us continue to take risks by supporting or sponsoring one of these projects! We have already raised more than $1 million into the Opening Season programming fund, and are aiming to more than double that by summer 2020. We will be providing rewarding recognition opportunities and special experiences for programming sponsors.
Support our 51st Street Renovation As we open our new building on 11th Avenue in fall 2020, we will temporarily take our beloved historic home on 51st Street offline as we prepare for its own renovation to ensure its sustainability as part of the New Irish Arts Center for generations to come. We have already raised more than $5 million for this $8 million project. The sooner we complete that fundraising, the sooner we can complete that renovation and bring the fullness of our programmatic potential to life!

Support our Growth and Sustainability Fund As we come to the finish line on the Phase One 11th Avenue construction, we are looking ahead to all our future needs—a nest egg for building reserves, capacity building, and programming ambitions. Our Growth and Sustainability Fund will help establish the trajectory of that future—gifts to this fund will have a huge multiplier effect.

“Irish culture is not something that is sealed. It is something that is open. It is something that is continually interacting with other cultures. It’s something that takes on a particular character in relation to a city like New York, a New York that is being remade, and its Irishness being redefined in an entirely new way. The Irish in New York, they will in fact be able to intermingle their stories here.” —PRESIDENT OF IRELAND MICHAEL D. HIGGINS

ARTIST TALK AND RECEPTION TUESDAY, MARCH 24 | 6 PM FREE | Reservations encouraged AT IRISH ARTS CENTER
A remarkably candid exhibition of eight 24” x 20” hand-printed photographs that captures the geographical divide between Northern Ireland and the Republic. Stephen McGinn, son of a retired customs officer who patrolled the unapproved roads, returned to Northern Ireland in 2019 to document the Armagh borderland of his childhood. He did so without agenda of persuasion or nostalgia, but simply as he found it: empty and dormant, enduringly ordinary in spite of its extraordinary history and precarious position in the fractured Brexit landscape. Stephen McGinn was born and raised in Ireland and moved to London at age 19 to pursue a career in photography. Now based in Brooklyn, McGinn works primarily in still life and beauty.

“Through magnificent inventiveness with space, sound and dress, Doherty evokes a stereotypical young man from the rough neighbourhoods of Northern Ireland…and attempts to find beauty and hope in an oft-ignored group on the periphery.” —TIME OUT BARCELONA
Fearless Belfast choreographer Oona Doherty performs a distillation of the male Oona Doherty mixes physical and sociological theatricality, the urban dance alphabet, neoclassical ballet memories and the contemporary with an aspiration to the sacred in a riveting solo that barely holds violence at bay. In this incarnation of the intuitive, Doherty emerges from the trunk of a 1999 Volvo and dances to house music in the street. She then leads the audience through the passageways of 92Y into Buttenwieser Hall, where she dances the acclaimed work that has made waves in festivals across Europe. A DJ set with performer Ross Carter follows the performance. Doherty returns to New York following an April 2019 appearance in New Dance Ireland: Choreographers of Nowness, a festival of new Irish choreography co-presented by Irish Arts Center and 92Y Harkness Dance Center.

most exciting talents to emerge in contemporary dance.... Her choreography is utterly honest and viscerally intense, [revealing] embedded behaviour borne of prejudice and neglect in Northern Irish society.”

“High energy meeting of the East and West...finding areas of commonality and overlap where previously it seemed that none existed.” —TERRY BLAIN
Reels In a collaboration both cultural homage and discovery, Utsav Lal, Sam Comerford, and Nitin Mitta mine the repertoires of Indian classical and Irish traditional music to create a brilliant metamorphosis of form. Reels and jigs whirl into jhala patterns, slow airs swell into alap phrases, and the roots of the genres are woven to intoxicating crescendos inspired by the polyphonic heart of modern-day Ireland. Ragas to Reels debuted to acclaim at Ireland’s National Concert Hall in 2009 and later toured to the UK and India, where it was the centerpiece for the 50th anniversary celebrations of the Embassy of Ireland in 2014. APRIL 29 – MAY 17 $40 general / $32 members AT IRISH ARTS CENTER
Written by Marie Jones Directed by Matthew McElhinney Starring Matthew Forsythe
“I am a free man, I am a Protestant man, I am an Irish man.” Kenneth is a workaday welfare clerk with steadfast loyalties: family, faith, and golf. His life in 1990s Belfast putts along on the easy pleasures and prejudices of the era, until an incident at a local football match shatters his beliefs and sends him hurtling down a path of reckoning and resistance. Marie Jones’s raucous and iconic one-man show about nation and identity is both time capsule and timeless. First performed in Belfast in 1994, A Night in November has toured internationally, bringing its triumphal story to London, Dublin, Los Angeles, and New York City. It now returns 25 years later to examine anew one man’s imperfect but exuberant awakening.

Meet Our Teachers Growing up in Milwaukee, Anne Johnson was surrounded by opportunities to hear and play Irish music. In her teens, she began listening voraciously to historical recordings of Irish trad artists. She performed solo singing shows at six consecutive Milwaukee Irish Fests, in addition to appearing at the Pike Lake Folk Festival, various Irish pubs in Milwaukee and Madison, and on Wisconsin Public Radio. Since moving to New York, Anne has earned a Master’s in music history and theory at Queens College. She has worked primarily as a music teacher at universities including Mannes College of Music, Hunter College, and Hofstra University. She is also a music journalist, contributing regularly to PS Audio’s Copper magazine and Classical Voice North America. She can be heard singing at area sessions and at the Rough and Ready performance series held monthly at Alchemical Theatre Studios in Manhattan. Name something about yourself others would find surprising. People who know me as an Irish singer and instrumentalist might be very surprised to know that I have published a lot of fiction—seven novels and over a hundred short stories! (If you’re curious, my website is AnneEJohnson.com, or you can look up Anne E. Johnson on Amazon. I even have a novella set in Ireland!) How did you come to the guitar? When I was growing up in Milwaukee, I took piano and violin lessons from a very young age. My dad played classical guitar as a hobby, so there was a guitar around the house. He also had a bunch of Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem LPs that I listened to obsessively. Around age 11, I decided I needed to be able to sing and play those songs for myself. I can’t remember exactly how I learned chords (this was before the internet, so they were probably in a book from the library!), but I soon got my hands on a little book of Clancy Bros. songs. As well as I could, I mimicked the guitar strums and fingerpicking patterns that Liam Clancy used on those records. It seemed to come naturally to me, and I quickly expanded into other repertoire such as Joan Baez’s recordings of some of the Francis Child Ballads and the gorgeous songs performed by Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill with the Bothy Band. When I was 14, I played my first solo show at Milwaukee’s Irish Fest, where I got the thrill of meeting Liam Clancy and Tommy Makem, who were very kind to me! A day in your life—go. Ha! You may be sorry you asked. Because my working life has so many moving parts, my weekdays tend to be an amalgam of countless unrelated tasks. In the morning, after a post-breakfast walk, I usually do work related to my freelance editing assignments. Before lunch, I take an hour or so to practice a couple of songs (with guitar or a cappella/sean-nós) and a few tunes on tin whistle or fiddle. The afternoon is reserved for writing, both fiction and music journalism, primarily the weekly column I write for Copper magazine about recording artists in various genres. I’m the household cook, so after dinner prep and eating (my husband, bless him, does the dinner dishes), I take care of remaining tasks such as class prep, and then settle in for a couple hours of Netflix. Of course, some nights I attend Irish music sessions or teach at IAC! Photo credit: Ken Munch
