Almost Ho Dear Friends of Irish Arts Center, They say that one of the most important things about any campaign is capturing that wave of momentum—and riding it to success. For all of us gathered last April 22nd at our epic Ireland Rising concert celebration commemorating Ireland’s Centenary, we could feel it happening right there and then. It was there in the immensity of the talent and the warmth of the human spirit bringing so many of us together. Those special, magical moments are what this work is all about. Just weeks after that incredible event, we are overwhelmed by the generosity and leadership it inspired. In that very short time we have secured a number of new private and public pledges of support to bring our campaign to over $50 million. It is staggering what we have all achieved together, thanks to the enduring commitment of our supporters to building a global flagship and permanent home for Irish arts and culture in New York City. The New Irish Arts Center is coming into view! With less than $10 million left to raise, we are approaching the homestretch—or shall we say the Almost Homestretch—and we need everyone’s help to get us over the line. If we all come together we can bring this campaign to fruition this year. Whether you join our Founders Circle with a pledge of $250,000—or contribute $250—or $2.50— your pledge to the campaign can bring us to “fully funded” status and allow us to get the building started. Irish America has never had a project like this or an opportunity like this—and the stars may never align quite this way again. To be successful, we all need to take a leap and do something most of us have never done before. That’s what makes it hard. That’s what makes it exciting. That’s what makes it worth doing. That’s what it takes to make history. Please visit almosthome2016.org to learn more about how you can make history with us. Remember, your pledge can be spread out over a number of years. And yes, there are many more magical moments in store for you this fall. Turn the pages that follow and be sure to book your seats early for some of the most exciting, emotionally transporting cultural experiences New York has to offer. Thank you for all you have done and all you will do.

Recent N IRELAND RISING

At one of the most magical evenings in Irish Arts Center history, dozens of artists and hundreds of audience members drawn from the breadth of our growing community came together to usher in Ireland’s next 100 years with Ireland Rising: Words and Music for a New Century. Presented by Bill Whelan and Paul Muldoon, this groundbreaking concert honored the spirit of inclusion, collaboration, and “unexpected marriages” that all define the Irish Arts Center ethos, featuring (L to R) Liam Ó Maonlaí, Annette Philip, Ayumi Ueda, Deborah Pierre, Giorgia Renosto, Paul Brady, Bill Whelan, Henry Hey, Joanie Madden, Lisa Dwan, Mick Moloney, Colm Tóibín, Anne Enright, Billy McComiskey, Peter Quinn, Christine Tobin, Nicole Maguire, and Sallay-Matu and Emma Garnett also known as Loah and Feather.

SAOIRSE RONAN AND GABRIEL BYRNE AT SPRING COCKTAILS 2016

On June 6th, our Claddagh Circle, a special group of our most dedicated supporters, came together at the New York Athletic Club to celebrate Irish talent on Broadway and another fantastic year of Irish Arts Center programming. Joined by Gabriel Byrne, Saoirse Ronan, Ciarán Hinds, Terry George, Jim Norton, and Sophie Okonedo, the event raised more than $300,000 for our Annual Fund.

CITY COUNCIL IN DUBLIN

More than one hundred Irish artists and companies joined with IAC Executive Director Aidan Connolly, Vice Chair Pauline Turley, Brian O’Dwyer, and a host of Irish dignitaries, to welcome New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito to Dublin during the Easter Rising celebrations. Joined by Council Members Daniel Dromm, Corey Johnson, Elizabeth Crowley, Jimmy Van Bramer, and Julissa Ferreras, the Speaker enjoyed a 21st-century Irish welcome, with a special greeting from “The Queen of Ireland,” Panti Bliss, and a stirring performance by singer-songwriter Declan O’Rourke to thank the Council for their great support of Irish artists and the Irish community in New York.

ews “ASTONISHING” GIRL

In one of the most unforgettable highlights of this or any season, Aoife Duffin brought her beautiful, heart-wrenching, tour-de-force performance in A Girl is a Half-formed Thing to New York, in our third copresentation with Baryshnikov Arts Center. Based on the modern masterpiece by novelist Eimear McBride and adapted by Annie Ryan, this Corn Exchange production earned rave reviews and a Critics’ Pick from The New York Times chief theatre critic Ben Brantley for Duffin’s “astonishing” portrayal.

MCCOURT MEMORIES

On June 26th, New York’s Irish cultural community came together for a truly special tribute marking the 20th anniversary of the publication of Frank McCourt’s masterpiece memoir, Angela’s Ashes. The event was hosted by novelist Joseph O’Connor in support of his inaugural University of Limerick/Frank McCourt Creative Writing Summer School at Glucksman Ireland House NYU. This celebratory tribute featured a range of readings and tributes from Frank’s family, friends, and colleagues, as well as what would become a historic performance of a McCourt family anthem, “Barefoot Days,” by brothers Malachy and Alphie McCourt, joined by Malachy’s granddaughter Gillian McCourt. Alphie McCourt, the youngest of the legendary McCourt siblings, a talented writer and a pillar of warmth and wit in his family and our community, passed away unexpectedly on July 2nd.

IAC AT THE KENNEDY CENTER

Building on our commitment to expose national audiences to the excellence and dynamism of contemporary Irish arts and culture, we were proud to support Ambassador Anne Anderson and The John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts for IRELAND 100: Celebrating a Century of Irish Arts & Culture in our nation’s capital. This feast of Irish culture featured a diverse selection of some of the most innovative Irish and Irish American artists working today, including a number of projects with Irish Arts Center roots, such as our beloved series Muldoon’s Picnic, Colin Dunne’s Out of Time, Jean Butler and Neil Martin’s this is an Irish dance, Camille O’Sullivan, and Fishamble’s Tiny Plays for Ireland and America.

How to Keep an Alien is a story about falling in love and having to prove it to the government. Tearfully funny and tender, this autobiographical tale follows Irish Sonya and Australian Kate as they try to persuade the Department of Immigration that they have the right to live together in Ireland. Join Sonya and Kate on a madcap odyssey from the stony townlands of Ireland to the leafy depths of the Queensland bush. It’s a tricky business coming from opposite ends of the earth. It takes an Olympian will and the heart of a whale, but above all else, paperwork. It takes a hell of a lot of paperwork!

$55 premium ($44 members) $44 general ($35 members) AT IRISH ARTS CENTER “The Irish Arts Center creates unexpected marriages” proclaimed Bill Whelan in introducing Ireland Rising, our Centenary concert celebration this past spring. Indeed one of the most magical elements of that night was the palpable chemistry between Irish folk singer Liam Ó Maonlaí and American jazz vocalist Cassandra Wilson as they performed a moving duet of Van Morrison’s “Tupelo Honey.” From that heart-stopping moment on April 22nd, the first meeting of these two iconic artists, it was clear there was destined to be more to the story. And so we are thrilled to bring Liam and Cassandra together for a week of more musical magic in the eleventh installment of our Masters in Collaboration Series. Join us to discover what beautiful musical rewards this very special collaboration will bring. Launched in 2008 with Paul Brady and Sarah Siskind, Masters in Collaboration brings artists together in those “unexpected marriages” to stimulate creativity, reward risk, and awaken a dynamic musical conversation between Ireland and the United States.

Tickets from $20 AT BAM HOWARD GILMAN OPERA HOUSE Peter Jay Sharp Building 30 Lafayette Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11217 “One of the most vital and original ensembles on the American music scene.” - THE NEW YORK TIMES

Underdog history comes to life through new music and old Irish songs in composer Donnacha Dennehy’s opera about the Great Famine of 1845-52, rooted in Asenath Nicholson’s harrowing first-person account in Annals of the Famine in Ireland. Featuring acclaimed ensemble Alarm Will Sound and celebrated Irish folk singer Iarla Ó Lionáird, The Hunger imagines soprano Katherine Manley as Nicholson and Ó Lionáird as the voice of the voiceless, with instrumentalists integrated into the staging. Old recordings of traditional sean-nós songs dovetail seamlessly with Dennehy’s score, while video clips of interviews with Noam Chomsky, Paul Krugman, and others underscore the political roots of this tragedy that brought a nation to its knees. All tickets $25 AT BAM FISHER Fishman Space, 321 Ashland Place, Brooklyn, NY 11217 The Dublin Guitar Quartet goes electric for the third installment of Bang on a Can founding composer Michael Gordon’s series exploring the untapped possibilities of select instruments. In Timber (BAM’s 2012 Next Wave), layered polyrhythms rippled from amplified two-by-fours situated in the round. In 2012’s Rushes, seven bassoonists used circular breathing to sustain clouds of mercurial sound. For Amplified, Gordon’s experiment takes a six-stringed turn. With the audience seated on four sides, the musicians send reverb-saturated pulsations across the aural field while redefining what the guitar as an ensemble instrument can be. Running Time: 60 minutes

Room

FILM WAS NOMINATED FOR

106 AWARDS , INCLUDING

FOUR ACADEMY AWARD NOMINATIONS, INCLUDING

BEST PICTURE NOVEL SHORTLISTED FOR

THE MAN BOOKER AND ORANGE PRIZE The Oscar-nominated writer of the worldwide bestseller Room returns to Irish Arts Center to read from her riveting new masterpiece The Wonder. After Donoghue’s reading, she will be joined in conversation with American novelist and screenwriter Sheri Holman.

“Her informed

imaginings combined with her sheer cleverness and elegance as a writer breathe vivid life into real characters

who heretofore resided in the footnotes of history.” – THE IRISH TIMES

Emma Donoghue again delves into the emotional life of a child with an intimate and mysterious tale of two strangers and how they change each other’s lives forever. Set in 1850s rural Ireland and written with all the propulsive tension that made Room a huge bestseller, The Wonder tells the story of Anna, a girl who has stopped eating but mysteriously remains alive, and Lib, the English nurse charged with observing Anna. This powerful psychological thriller is a searing examination of faith, doubt, forgiveness, and love pitted against evil.

“Reading an Emma Donoghue book is like falling into a deep friendship with an unlikely stranger: a lady of the evening, a cross-dressing frogcatcher, an imprisoned child.

The author’s empathy for outsiders makes for captivating characters; she illustrates the complex inner lives of her creations with a candor that shows humanity at its best and worst.” – THE WASHINGTON POST

LITERATURE & HUMANITIES Roger Rosenblatt Thomas Murphy: A Novel in conversation with Alice McDermott WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 30 | 7:30 PM $12 general / $10 members Free for Friend / Young Patron ($125) members and higher AT IRISH ARTS CENTER

Roger Rosenblatt—the acclaimed, award-winning essayist, memoirist, and New York Times bestselling author of Making Toast, Kayak Morning, and Lapham Rising—joins Irish Arts Center to read from and discuss his new novel Thomas Murphy, the reflective, bittersweet tale of an aging poet ruminating on his colorful life. After Rosenblatt’s reading, he will be joined in conversation with Alice McDermott. An Irishman, a dreamer, a poet, Thomas Murphy, or “Murph,” takes us through his childhood on Inishmaan, a small island off the west coast of Ireland, and his life in New York, where he has lived since his twenties. We come to know his daughter, his grandson, his late wife, and his first love. Murph’s mind jumps from fact to memory to fancy and though his mind is deteriorating, we see in him both the man he used to be and the man he is in his most lucid moments. And it’s these moments of lucidity that make this novel all the more heartbreaking.

1. How did you learn the Irish language? I started learning Irish in school when I was seven but never showed much of an interest until I was entering my last year of high school. After deciding I wanted to study journalism through the medium of Irish at university level, I carted myself off to the Gaeltacht to get a better grasp of the language, realized what I had been missing out on until then, and came on leaps and bounds with the help of my lecturers in Fiontar in Dublin City University.

3. What is your favorite thing about living in NYC? The sense of accomplishment that came from arriving with no friends, no job, and no place to live and thinking back on all I’ve managed to achieve in a relatively short space of time. It hits every time I think of the stress of arriving with just a suitcase and compared to how comfortable I feel now. 4. What is your least favorite thing about living in NYC? Waiting in line for absolutely everything and having to get up early at the weekend to watch my football clubs lose.

8:30-9:30 PM Hard Shoe Irish Step Dancing

Thursday 6:30-7:30 PM Bagpipes: Traditional Irish Music for Kids 7-9 PM

2. What is your favorite word in Irish and why? Probably “Deora Dé,” which is the Irish for a fuchsia flower, and would translate more directly as “tears of God.” I like it simply because I like to think of the feelings of the person who first decided that it was to be the name of this particular flower and how beautiful they must have thought it looked to name it as such.

Innovative Playwriting

7:30-9:30 PM Bagpipes: Traditional Irish Music on the Piob Mhor for Adults

5. What advice do you have for new Irish language learners? Be patient and be brave. A language is a skill that takes years to perfect and it’s easy to get disheartened early on but it’s more than worth it once you get there. You also have to throw yourself in the deep end sometimes and put yourself in situations where you’re not sure exactly what’s being said or not sure you can make yourself understood. People generally understand, however, so there’s no need to feel nervous or worried about what others will think.
