Fall 2013

What does it take to build a For more than forty years, the Irish Arts Center has served as a place where people of all backgrounds can come together to create and celebrate Irish arts and culture in diverse, dynamic, demanding New York City, the cultural hub and melting pot of the world. Over the last several years, we have been hard at work on the development of a new and permanent home to match the significance of that mission: to project a dynamic image of Ireland for the 21st century, and provide a foundation for an enduring Irish America that honors the past while looking affirmatively to the future. So how do you do that, exactly? With a lot of help.

Stakeholders Long before she became Speaker, Councilmember Christine Quinn saw the leaky roof in our three-story tenement on 51st Street and said, “this is the Irish Arts Center?” Like all of us, she understood that the Irish deserved a cultural home in New York that was commensurate with the extraordinary accomplishments the Irish have made to our city and country. A place that could stand proudly alongside other cultural homes like Asia Society, Alliance Francaise, Scandinavia House, and so many others.

help construct it. Following her commitment—and the inspirational leadership of our honorary chairmen Gabriel Byrne and Liam Neeson—the Irish government signed on as well, recognizing how valuable a first-rate platform for Irish culture in New York City could be—as did James Houlihan and members of our board—and Loretta Brennan Glucksman and the American Ireland Fund—and so many other generous donors.

Wexford Opera House, designed by the Office of Public Works

The Team Christine Quinn at our annual Spring Cocktails fundraiser

With support from her colleagues, she helped arrange for Irish Arts Center to acquire a site of city-owned land just around the corner where a new facility could be built— and along with Mayor Bloomberg and Borough President Scott Stringer expressed the commitment of the city to 1

Then what? We needed to build a team with the experience and talent to match the ambition of our goals. The Irish government stepped in and offered the in-kind services of the Office of Public Works, which has designed some of the most acclaimed cultural centers in Europe, including the Wexford Opera House. OPW was joined by our architects of record Davis Brody Bond, whose incredible portfolio includes the soon to open National September 11 Museum, and our theatre consultants at Fisher Dachs, who have developed some of the most functionally successful performance spaces in the world. new Irish Arts Center? Our project managers, Jonathan Rose Companies, helped us develop a thorough programming exercise to ensure the project had a clear mission that reconciled our programmatic goals with a sustainable operating plan. Because we didn’t simply want to upgrade the Irish Arts Center as we know it. We wanted to completely rethink what aspirations made sense for a New Irish Arts Center. And ensure that it would run successfully for future generations.

and support of our city’s visionary and ambitious Department of Cultural Affairs. We have iterated, and iterated, and iterated. And drafted and drawn and redrafted and redrawn. And budgeted and budgeted and modeled and remodeled.

And we are almost home. In just a few short months, the design of the New Irish Arts Center will be complete. And we will announce a major new fundraising campaign to ensure that this historic project will meet its potential.

You So how you can you help us lay the foundation? Our project managers, Jonathan Rose Companies, recently worked with Brooklyn Academy of Music in the development of the new BAM Fisher building

Process We interviewed hundreds of artists and practitioners, across a range of disciplines in Ireland and New York— actors and singers, authors and musicians, dancers and designers and directors, visual artists and teachers and technicians and stage managers and acousticians, as well as countless more audience members, funders, technology experts, accountants, and, yes, even elevator experts. (New York is a great town). Working with our partners at the Clinton Housing Development Corporation, we engaged with our community and neighbors to better understand how this new Irish Arts Center could make our neighborhood even more vibrant and harmonious. We have learned from colleagues at institutions like Brooklyn Academy of Music, Baryshnikov Arts Center, Jazz at Lincoln Center and Signature Theatre—each of which has recently completed capital projects—and now know the pitfalls to avoid. Throughout we have been overwhelmed by the incredible collegiality of New York’s cultural community, and the mentorship

You can help us spread the word by reaching out to your friends and family members who care about Irish culture and Ireland. Organize your network to attend a performance or event or take a class. Become a member. We need you! By becoming a member you or a friend will be among the first to hear about events, enjoy discounted rates for performances and classes, get invitations to exclusive artists’ talks and receptions. Make a donation to the campaign and leave an indelible footprint for all to see and follow, and see if your company has a matching program. The New Irish Arts Center represents more than a mere building. It will be a beacon that illuminates who we are, where we have been and where we are going. It will be a hub of activity, dialogue and action; a source of creation and generation; and a bridge that connects the global Irish—in all its emerging diversity—to the homeland. We look forward to sharing this journey with all of you in the days to come.

Fall 2013

Recent Events Spring 2013 Arts and Economics Irish financial journalist and author David McWilliams brought his sharp wit and incisive commentary to New York for our first Irish Arts Center Political Cabaret. This entertaining take on current events featured special guests including former Obama’s “Car Czar” and MSNBC’s Morning Joe economic analyst Steven Rattner and comedian Colin Quinn.

Springing into Fundraising Season Longtime friend of the Center Aidan Quinn turned out to honor his Michael Collins co-star for our annual Spring Cocktails with Liam Neeson, which raised more than $200,000 for our upcoming season.

“Big Love” for Declan O’Rourke One of Ireland’s most exciting singer-songwriter-guitarists, Declan O’Rourke, took to the intimate Donaghy Stage for seven nights with a string quartet in a residency that captured the imagination of hundreds of new fans—including The New York Times’ chief pop music critic Jon Pareles, who praised Declan’s “virtuosity” and proclaimed “his calling is as a balladeer.”

Halcyon Days for Ireland’s Prolific Playwright Kinahan Following her IAC debut with BogBoy in 2011, Deirdre Kinahan returned to the Donaghy Theatre with her latest comedy, These Halcyon Days, featuring “excellent performances” (The New York Times) by leading Irish actors Stephen Brennan and Anita Reeves.

Martin Hayes (fiddle) and Dennis Cahill (guitar) are two of the world’s leading artists in traditional Irish music. Their adventurous, soulful interpretations of traditional tunes are recognized the world over for their exquisite musicality and irresistible rhythm. In concert, they hold listeners spellbound with their slow-building, fiery performances, releasing the pure, distilled beauty and great emotional depths of Irish music. They have toured the world as a duet for the past twenty years with performances in venues ranging from vast to intimate, including the Sydney Opera House, Buddhist temples in Japan and at the White House where they met and played for President Obama and the first lady. Previous residencies at the IAC have featured sold-out performances by Julie Feeney and Declan O’Rourke. Book now for this rare chance to experience Martin and Dennis in residence for eight performances. As an Australian reviewer put it: “Martin Hayes plays fiddle. Dennis Cahill plays acoustic guitar. Singly, each is remarkable. As a duo they are sublime.” Each night a different special guest will drop in, including uilleann piper Ivan Goff (last seen at Masters in Collaboration), fiddler Cleek Schrey, fiddler Dana Lyn (last seen at Celtic Appalachia), epiphone guitarist Kyle Sanna, Norwegian Hardanger fiddler Dan Trueman, Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Paul Muldoon and more.

Direct from its world premiere at the Abbey Theatre, Maeve’s House is a beautiful, poignant play about shared experiences and brief encounters. From the modest brick houses and small gardens of Dublin’s Ranelagh village to the towering glory of Manhattan, Maeve Brennan was a pioneering Irish writer, admired as much for her intelligence and wit as her beauty and style. Her “bittersweet chronicle of New York in transition in the 1950s and 60s” (NYT) graced The New Yorker’s famed “Talk of the Town” section while her tender, memoryfilled fiction reflected her own fragmented upbringing in Ireland. Brennan set most of her short stories in Ranelagh, a leafy suburb in Dublin, in the same house Irish actor Eamon Morrissey would grow up in 20 years later. In 1966, while performing on Broadway in Brian Friel’s Philadelphia, Here I Come!, Eamon picked up The New Yorker and was surprised to discover his family home brought vividly to life in Brennan’s story “Twelfth Wedding Anniversary.” Thus began his journey to meet this mysterious woman. “It was as if the magazine in my hands had become a mirror.” – Eamon Morrissey Bringing to life Brennan’s extraordinary character and remarkable stories in the context of his own remarkable life, acclaimed stage actor and Fair City star Eamon Morrissey creates a moving portrait of one of Ireland and America’s most enigmatic figures.

Every night a surprise guest joins Mick and the musicians for a “fireside” chat. Past visitors have included Gabriel Byrne, Dan Barry, Colum McCann, Michael Patrick MacDonald, Belinda McKeon, Malachy McCourt, Sebastian Junger and Christine Quinn.

A multi-talented musician, songwriter and singer, Eleanor McEvoy is one of Ireland’s most accomplished artists. She composed the song “Only A Woman’s Heart,” title track of the hit album A Woman’s Heart, which remains the one of the best-selling albums in Irish history. Eleanor delivers an intimate and powerful live performance and she has appeared all over the world on numerous TV shows, films, festivals, and concerts.

Two-time Meteor award-winner and Cork native, John Spillane is one of the most accomplished songwriters in Ireland today. Whether performing solo with guitar, with gentle accompaniment or with a full band before 100,000 audience members, John entertains, charms, and mesmerizes with his unique vocals—effortlessly flirting between beautiful poetry and roguish, irreverent Cork humor.

Winner of the Nashville Songwriting Competition in two categories, Blarney native Mick Flannery earns his listing in The Irish Times “50 Best Irish Acts” with his gravelly powerful voice that carries well after his unforgettable performances are over.

“McEvoy…is a timely reminder of what sets a musician apart: A hunger for exploration and a deep-seated talent for exploring the darker corners of both music and life.” - The Irish Times

“ … some of the most skillfully crafted, vividly realized songs anyone has written in Ireland over the past dozen years.”

“Mick Flannery is a singing and songwriting force to be reckoned with.” - The Irish Times

- Earle Hitchner, writer/reviewer for Irish Echo and The Wall Street Journal on John Spillane

Whether it is his observations of the vibrant city of New York where he has spent the last six years, or of the lives, personalities and circumstances of his fleeting encounters with strangers, Connolly writes intelligently and with extraordinary clarity and curiosity. His songs have been covered by more than 20 acts worldwide, and he has spent several years touring the U.S. and Europe. This concert will see Niall perform songs from his newest album Sound with his 5-piece band, featuring Manchester-born songwriter Warren Malone on guitar and harmonies, Brandon Wilde on bass and harmonies, Len Monachello on drums and harmonies, Dennis Cronin on trumpet and vibraphonette, and Chris Foley on guitar.

Anthony Mulcahy

“Niall Connolly is a folk icon… Among the most vibrant, poignant, and authentic indie folk artists in New York City.”

A founding member of the Gealach Gorm Singer/Songwriter Festival, County Waterford’s Anthony Mulcahy relocated to New York in 2006. Having played at some of the most popular music venues in New York City, Mulcahy has created his own unique style and brings a new dimension to simple acoustic melodies. His lyrics show an appreciation for humanity in all its joy and pain, romance and tragedy and he will perform songs from his debut album Lazy Days (2010) and For My Sins (2012).

2013, 88 minutes / Directed by Conor Masterson Accomplished photographer Conor Masterson has photographed The Frames since 1998, enjoying a front-row seat to the remarkable lives of one of Ireland’s most enduring bands. Masterson’s extensive background with the band results in fascinatingly candid interviews, with discussions on the nature of music and collaboration. With a photographer’s eye, poetic sensibility and painterly aesthetic, Masterson also captures The Frames’ intangible electricity in a featurelength documentary shot entirely in black and white. The end result is a compelling exploration of the band’s dynamic creative process including Glen Hansard’s passionate driving role, and a celebration of music and friendship.

The Secret of Kells saturday, September 14 | 11 am $5 2009, 75 minutes / Directed by Tomm Moore Suitable for all ages, under 12 accompanied by an adult Revisit this gorgeous Oscar-nominated full-length feature animation film from Kilkenny’s Cartoon Saloon studio. Meet One of Our Teachers James Cleveland Born and raised in California, James moved east to attend graduate school and pursue an acting career. Though proficient on piano and guitar, he had not yet discovered Irish fiddle music. When a friend taught him “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” on the fiddle he got hooked and wanted to learn more but had no idea where to begin. A friend suggested contacting Juilliard (where many of their students teach) and so he began classical violin lessons. He finally found what he was looking for while attending a fiddle workshop led by Brian Conway at the Irish Arts Center. Fiddle classes at last! Besides classes (with teacher Mardi Tuminaro) and workshops with many well known players at the IAC, he was a regular patron of the Blarney Star concerts which allowed him to experience the pantheon of Irish musicians, including fiddler Athena Tergis (one of the stars of An Irish Christmas) with whom he studied. He continues to play with the Irish Arts Center Céilí Band. James spent several summers at the Valley of the Moon fiddling school, run by Alasdair Fraser, where he continued honing his skills with great players of diverse styles including Martin Hayes and Bruce Molsky. In 1999, he was asked to teach a fiddle class at the IAC, which he’s been doing ever since for beginners and advanced players alike. He’s played the fiddle in a number of stage plays including the Irish Repertory Theatre’s The Colleen Bawn and can be heard regularly during Tuesday night sessions at Dempsey’s Pub in the East Village.
