Topping Out Friends, What an incredible moment in history we are sharing together. At this writing, we are more than eight months into construction of Phase One of the New Irish Arts Center—on time and on budget— with the final beam of steel, raised on June 5th, standing proudly atop what is now the highest point on our block. To commemorate this occasion—the Topping Out—we mounted five flags atop the beam: one each for Ireland, the U.S., New York State, New York City, and the United Nations, together reflecting the standards of excellence and hard work that make our city and state the envy of the country, the values of inclusion that are at the heart of the American identity and our mission, and the new home we are building as an international hub for the Global Irish diaspora.

Still, our work continues. We are programming for the landmark Opening Season beginning next autumn—a season that will serve not only as a wonderful introduction to our new home, but as a statement of promise and possibility.

Phase Two: Our Historic Home on 51st Street “...The next stage of our development— the renovation of our existing theatre”
Having “topped out steel,” we are developing our inaugural Opening Season with a dynamic range of projects and programs that will bring our new spaces to life. At the same time, we are planning for the next stage of our development—the renovation of our existing theatre on 51st Street, which we aim to reopen in time for our 50th anniversary in 2022.
This fall, we are launching Phase Two of our campaign—to support the exciting new programming that is now possible in our new building, as well as the renovation of our beloved historic home, and a nest egg to support our future. We welcome support at all levels. Gifts to both phases of the campaign will be recognized in the new building when we open in the autumn of 2020. Steel is up and we are long past the point of inevitability. All that remains to be determined is just how fully we will meet our potential. As our New York City roots grow ever deeper, our role as a national hub continues to expand. In partnership with Culture Ireland, we were thrilled to present an eight-city tour of Declan O’Rourke: Chronicles of the Great Irish Famine in New York City; Chicago, IL; Kansas City, MO; Asheville and Elkin, NC; Lancaster, PA and Hamden, CT; and regional community performances of Margaret McAuliffe’s The Humours of Bandon at New York Irish Center in Queens, the Irish American Center of Nassau, Suffolk, and Queens in Mineola, and the Irish Cultural & Sports Association of Southern Connecticut.

Highlighting our close partnership with the Irish government, we were honored to welcome Josepha Madigan, T.D., Ireland’s Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, in January for a briefing on both phases of the capital project, with a special performance of Muldoon’s Picnic featuring Liev Schreiber, Amy Ryan, Erika Sánchez, Iarla Ó Lionáird and Dan Trueman, where she made a presentation to newly appointed Cultural Ambassador Paul Muldoon. The Minister joined us again on Bloomsday weekend for a special dedication to commemorate the completion of steel on site.

Celtic Appalachian Little Nora Brown and Jerron “Blindboy” Paxton joined the lineup of our annual Celtic Appalachian Celebration, a rousing evening of music and dance celebrating the shared lineage of Irish, West African, and Appalachian traditions. The soldout concert was presented as part of Carnegie Hall’s Migrations: The Making of America Festival, hosted by Mick Moloney and featuring Athena Tergis and the Green Fields of America, the New Ballards Branch Bogtrotters with 2018 NEA National Heritage fellow Eddie Bond, Stephanie Coleman, and Megan Downes.

Michelle Rogers grew up in Dundalk, on the border of Northern Ireland and the Republic, during the height of the Troubles. She has exhibited her work in Ireland, New York, Guadalajara, Rome, Los Angeles, and Venice at the Venice Biennale 52.

Seamus Heaney: Manuscripts
Irish Arts Center partners with the National Library of Ireland to celebrate the poetry of Seamus Heaney with a selection of materials from the Library’s landmark exhibition in Dublin.

Established in 1887, we share the story of Ireland through our unique collections, made up of over 10 million items. Our strategic priorities are to collect, protect, connect, innovate and collaborate. Heaney donated his remarkable literary collection to the Library in 2011, and the drafts on display are drawn from the Library’s Seamus Heaney: Listen Now Again exhibition currently on show in the Bank of Ireland Cultural and Heritage Centre in Dublin. Selections include 14 manuscripts documenting the artist at work: a collection of beloved poems typed on lined paper, handwritten on the backs of envelopes, edited with pencil and blue and black ink. Our exhibition opens alongside a celebration of the U.S. publication of 100 Poems, a retrospective begun by Heaney and completed by his family, as part of our 11th annual PoetryFest (page 22).

Muldoon’s A mixum-gatherum of words and music Hosted by Paul Muldoon with house band Rogue Oliphant The beloved monthly variety show returns with another season of music and madness, prose and poetry, high commentary and low comedy. Based on a late 19th century New York show of the same name, Muldoon’s Picnic includes songs written by Pulitzer Prize-winner Paul Muldoon and performed by house band Rogue Oliphant, and an ever-eclectic roster of special guests.

The “stylistically omnivorous and physically versatile” (The Log Journal) Alarm Will Sound celebrates the release of their recording of Donnacha Dennehy’s The Hunger on Nonesuch Records with a special performance at one of New York’s most esteemed concert halls. Rooted in the emotional, political and socioeconomic devastation of Ireland’s Great Famine (1845-52), The Hunger is punctuated by profound early recordings of traditional Irish folk ballads. The program also includes Eartheater’s “When Fire is Allowed to Finish,” six movements that distill foley-filled digital production and classical composition into works suspended between reckless romanticism and precisely detailed sonic tapestries. This evening is part of Merkin Hall’s Ecstatic Music Festival, curated by Judd Greenstein, which exclusively presents new work resulting from collaborations.

Meet Our Teachers MIA THEODOARATUS is a harpist, composer, and improviser. She has enjoyed working with Roscoe Mitchell, Susan Allen, Charlie Hayden, Antony and the Johnsons, Baikida Caroll, Gelatin, JG Thirlwell, Lary 7 and Cormac De Barra. Her goal is to take classical sensibility and infuse it with the dynamics of free jazz, Celtic melody, and the rhythm of rock. Her performance highlights include playing in concert for President Barak Obama, a duet with Cormac De Barra at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Shakespeare’s production of Oedipus with Avery Brooks at the Acropolis of Athens, Greece, and performing at every closed dive bar in NYC. Her current collaborations include Optipus visual/sound improv group performing at the Whitney, Mana Contemporary and the Parrish Museums, the Ensemble of Seven, Adam Rudolf’s Go Organic Orchestra, and her own solo explorations. She has recorded on Sony, Sahko, Plasticville Records, Verve as well as composed for Rubicon (AMC), Million Dollar Listing (Lifetime), Flight of the Conchords (HBO). Name something about yourself others would find surprising. Can a New Yorker be surprised? Once I was flown to Vienna on a private jet to play two songs for a disco party called LifeBall. How did you discover the harp? I just decided I was going to be a harpist when I was 15. I wish there was a rhyme or reason but there isn’t...although I was very fond of Cacofonix from the Asterix book series and he played the harp. Maybe that had something to do with it. A day in your life—go. I usually spend the morning drinking coffee and playing with my dog. Then I practice anything that needs long term work. Right now I am teaching myself how to play the ancient Greek lyre, so I usually start by exploring on that. Then I do some yoga with an app. After that, anything is game. I play with anyone who asks, so there is no typical day. Who has been the most influential figure in your music life, and how? I really love playing as many female composers as possible, especially the work of Sophia Dussek from the late 18th century. She was married to the composer Jan Ladislav Dussek, who ended up taking a lot of her compositions and publishing them under his own name. I mean, it was tough-going in the 18th century for a woman, but she was amazing—she left him and started her own music conservatory in London and even took a lover while she and Jan were still married. And even if her husband stole her music, at least we still have it to appreciate today. What advice would you give to new harp players? Say yes more than no. It’s so easy to fall into a tribe mentality in New York, but that can lead to stymying your growth as an artist. The more you say yes, the more opportunities open up and I’ve found that pretty much every new experience has been something I’ve really enjoyed.
