SPRING 2017
PERFORMANCE | EXHIBITION | EDUCATION IRISHARTSCENTER.ORG
A World of Ideas In his groundbreaking essay “A Defense of Poetry,” the Romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley offered this bold declaration: “Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of the world.” Artists offer us a created world of shared imagination, a world that includes and inspires and touches our lives. A world of ideas and hope, no matter what the challenge, inspiring us to bring our best selves to the world we inhabit, so the world we inhabit might become more like the world we imagine. We begin 2017 with excitement and anticipation for the start of construction of our new building, and with an enduring commitment to what the New Irish Arts Center is all about: fostering and creating moments of beauty, transcendence and inspiration, celebrating and sustaining the excellence and dynamism of Irish culture, bringing people of all backgrounds together to share in their common humanity. Our current season abundantly celebrates these values. We begin with the debut of a new conversation series, Movements, which will bring important global voices to the Irish Arts Center stage to add a current-affairs dimension to our cultural conversation. We couldn’t be prouder to launch this series with the legendary statesman and peacemaker Senator George Mitchell, on January 25th. This season we are doubling down on our commitment to fostering exciting and unusual artistic collaborations. You won’t want to miss The Auction Project, a thrilling, cross-cultural sextet featuring the legendary pianist Arturo O’Farrill of the Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, alto saxophonist David Bixler, and Irish violinist Heather Bixler. And four wonderful artists who have appeared with us on separate occasions—dancer Colin Dunne, harpist Maeve Gilchrist, fiddler Tóla Custy, and piper David Power—combine forces in Edges of Light, a uniquely moving and entertaining music and dance performance making its U.S. debut. We will also enjoy a return visit from Loah, the Irish-Sierra-Leonean singer from Dublin who debuted last spring at our epic Ireland Rising concert at Symphony Space. Continuing our mission to provide our artists a platform to showcase their favorite artists, we also announce a new jazz series, Tobin’s Run on 51, curated and hosted by the singer Christine Tobin. Once a month in our Donaghy Theatre, Tobin’s Run will bring together top Irish and U.S.-based jazz artists to entertain and inform through this indigenous American art form.

To help celebrate Valentine’s Day, the beloved Irish balladeer Declan O’Rourke returns to our intimate Donaghy Theatre with a ten-piece orchestra conducted by Henry Hey, musical director of David Bowie’s Lazarus, who led the Ireland Rising House Orchestra for us at Symphony Space last April. Later this spring, just months ahead of its demolition to make way for the New Irish Arts Center, we will inhabit the Cybert Tire site around the corner on 11th Avenue with the New York premiere of Rooms, an immersive theatrical and visual arts installation by the incomparable Irish theatre artist Enda Walsh. We will be presenting Rooms in partnership with St. Ann’s Warehouse, who will simultaneously bring Walsh’s latest play, Arlington, to their new home in the Tobacco Warehouse in DUMBO, Brooklyn. All of that, plus the return of so many of your favorite Irish Arts Center traditions, including Celtic Appalachian Celebration, Muldoon’s Picnic, Open Day, Book Day, and our 16th annual Dance Festival to kick off the City’s Summer-on-the-Hudson series on Pier I. As you can see, the New Irish Arts Center is about so much more than a new building. It’s about a new idea of who we are and how we engage with the world. Your support is essential to fulfilling that mission, so we hope you will consider becoming a member or supporting one of our amazing fundraising events throughout the spring. Our capital campaign is hitting the Almost Home-stretch, with over 90% of our goal raised—but we still need your help to get over the line this year. Please call Nick Rolf at 212-757-3318 x223 for more information about our recognition opportunities and other ways you can help. A final note: we are pleased to dedicate our 2017 theatre programming to the memory of Nancy Malone, an Emmy-winning producer, director and actor, the first woman to serve as vice president of television at 20th Century Fox, and a dear friend and colleague of Irish Arts Center. Thank you for being part of the Irish Arts Center family!

Recent MARTIN HAYES RESIDENCY
“What I’m actually good at is playing Irish music on the fiddle. But I flex it, I bend it, I twist it. I make space for other things to happen in it, and around it and beside it.” Martin Hayes’ twoweek residency with guitarist Dennis Cahill seeded countless collaborations with a diverse lineup of guest performers ranging from influential figures in Irish American traditional music like Brian Conway and Rose Flanagan, to the Indian Raga pianist Utsav Lal and contemporary string quartet Brooklyn Rider.
ALMOST HOME-STRETCH
Our capital campaign entered the “Almost Home-stretch” with a €1 million grant announced by Ireland’s Taoiseach Enda Kenny and Minister Heather Humphreys T.D. The news coincided with the beginning of work on the façade of Cybert Tire, which will ultimately be incorporated into the new building. We are currently on track for demolition and construction to begin at the end of 2017.

At this year’s Halloween celebration, revelers tall and small wondered at the mystical creatures of Gregory Corbino’s puppet show, sang spooky songs with renowned vocalist and fiddle player Liz Hanley, learned fun steps with Irish dancer Laura Neese, bobbed for apples, and went on a trick-or-treating adventure in our historic Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood.

Participants and special guests included Pulitzer Prize-winners Yusef Komunyakaa and Sharon Olds, Rooney Prize-winner Doireann Ní Ghríofa, Man Booker International and National Book Award finalist Fanny Howe and more.
MULDOON’S PICNIC WITH ROSANNE CASH
Our fifth season of Muldoon’s Picnic featured a historic performance from Rosanne Cash performing “Forty Shades of Green” on the 13th anniversary of the death of her father, the iconic American musician-songwriter Johnny Cash. Paul Muldoon and his Picnic are back for their sixth run this spring.
ALIEN MAGIC
5
Writer-performer Sonya Kelly brought audiences on an emotional, laugh-filled journey through the absurdities and challenges of falling in love with someone from another country and having to prove it to the government. Rough Magic’s How to Keep an Alien earned raves from the Village Voice and Financial Times, and the top spot in The New York Times fall theater preview as “a strong entry in the new season at Irish Arts Center.”

MUSIC “The Stunning were the biggest band in the country; tracks such as ‘Brewing up a Storm,’ ‘Heads are Gonna Roll’ and ‘Half Past Two’ are alternative anthems.” – THE IRISH TIMES
Join us for two inspiring evenings of great music from the legendary songwriters from The Stunning, Steve and Joe Wall. Since they exploded onto the Irish music scene in 1990 with their number one album Paradise in the Picturehouse, the brothers Wall have produced a string of hit singles and albums for both The Stunning and their other incarnation as The Walls. Strong melodies, lyrics, and hooks have always been their trademark and this captivating and dynamic show will dip into their back catalogue, airing subtle ballads such as “Half Past Two” and “Empty Feeling” and stirring show-stoppers such as “To the Bright and Shining Sun” and “Heads Are Gonna Roll,” while also showcasing some newer material. This is a rare opportunity to hear these songs strippeddown in an intimate setting.

Both Sides Now — The Melting Pot
Rip, Rig, and Panic
The evening will showcase what good things can happen when diverse artists join forces. In the late 70s legendary jazz bassist and composer Charles Mingus invited Joni Mitchell to collaborate with him. The result was the critically acclaimed Mingus album— a sound that was contemporary, lyrical, and complex. This show will explore “the song” in jazz and we’ll hear artists who excel when crossing genres.
This evening’s show takes its title from an album by the virtuosic jazz musician Rahsaan Roland Kirk. He was an American jazz multiinstrumentalist who played tenor saxophone, flute, and many other instruments. His unique boundary-pushing style, onstage vitality, comic banter, and political rantings epitomise the zeitgeist of the 1960s and the reshaping of the world as it was known. A range of very special guests capture that spirit with more music, stories and fun on Tobin’s Run.

AT IRISH ARTS CENTER Exhibition runs January 25 – April 3
As Above, So Below re-considers the folklore and customs from the west coast of Ireland. Artist Marie Connole focuses on the mythical Cill Stíopháin, a drowned village in Liscannor Bay said to become visible for one day every seven years, which shares striking parallels with the fabled islands of Atlantis and Hy-Brasil. Connole distills the essence of this tale, and others from her home place in County Clare, through the lens of memory, personal narrative, and history. Working with sacred iconography and archetypal symbols, she re-imagines a personal legacy through delicate drawings and watercolors. Marie Connole is a visual artist and teacher from Co. Clare whose work has featured in eva International, Aughty Public Art Projects, the National Gallery of Ireland, Tulca, and with Ground Up Artists Collective (GUAC). She has received a number of residency and bursary awards including support by Clare County Arts Office, the Arts Council of Ireland and Culture Ireland, and features in public and private collections.

– MARTIN HAYES The musical interaction between fiddlers Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Dan Trueman stretch and abstract the DNA of Norwegian and Irish fiddling into something new, sparse, and stunning. Their sound ranges from the near-silent to the nigh-on orchestral, at times exploding joyously from their two beautiful hybrid 10-string fiddles. Utterly unique, their collaborative album Laghdú is music of an exceptional and unusual beauty.
“A seamless and unfettered soundscape … there’s enough space and light here for influences as diverse as baroque to minimalism to breathe free … the work of musicians reveling in the moment:

Meet Our Teachers Brad Lawrence is a storyteller, solo show performer and teacher who has performed to sold-out crowds around the United States and in the UK. He got his start as a storytelling teacher conducting workshops at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He then went on to become a story coach for the RISK podcast and live shows and an instructor for The Story Studio. As a storyteller, Brad was the first person to win back-to-back Moth GrandSLAMs, which led to him becoming an occasional host of the Moth and a regular on Moth Mainstages around the country. He has co-produced and performed in storytelling, solo, and variety shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, South By Southwest Interactive, and in conjunction with WBUR, USA Network, and Grant’s Whiskey. For more, listen to his podcast— The Brad Lawrence Cast—or catch his critically acclaimed oneman show, The Gospel of Sherilyn Fenn. 1. How did you become a storyteller? I have a background as a writer and performer and I had always been the storyteller of my group of friends, the keeper of our adventures, as it were. Then, one day, my future wife took me to The Moth and I put my name in the hat on a whim. I got called up in the last slot and blasted through a story on pure adrenaline, but, it killed the room and I won. From there I was hooked. 2. What is one of your favorite stories and why? OR what do you like most about storytelling? My wife has a story about a childhood friend that she was separated from because they were both bullied kids and the friend’s parents thought she would have a better chance if she made more popular friends. Decades later they found each other and the affection was still as alive as ever. It’s a beautiful story about loss, the cruelty of good intentions, and healing. I think the thing that storytelling does is it gives you control over your own narrative, it lets you choose and craft the meaning behind the significant moments in your life and what you want to take from them. 3. What is your favorite thing about living in NYC? The hodge podge of experiences, lifestyles, cultures, religions, races, and identities that are around you all day, everyday. 4. What is your least favorite thing about living in NYC? Sometimes the pace of it can wear me out and all I want to do is sit in my apartment, watch Netflix and eat tacos until I’m recharged enough to get back out there. 5. What advice do you have for new storytellers? Don’t try to tell your whole life story in one shot, especially in the first story you set out to create. You are trying to pick a moment out of your life, an experience you think the listener will relate to and take something from. You’re not trying to communicate the entire arc of your time on Earth in 5 to 15 minutes. Don’t put that kind of pressure on yourself. It’s discouraging for you, confusing for the listener, and impossible to pull off unless your life has encompassed no more than one experience. There is more in you than one story.
