The Path From Ground Well, we made it. On October 11, 2018, we broke ground on Phase One of the New Irish Arts Center on 11th Avenue. At this writing, the demolition of the former Cybert Tire (now relocated around the corner) is complete and excavation of our foundation is underway. The new building will open in autumn 2020. It’s an astounding, historic accomplishment, made possible only through the dedication of our community of artists, donors, audiences, students, teachers, government partners, and opinion leaders. In a word: you. But it’s only the beginning. Our eyes are on the horizon and our foot is on the gas. Our campaign continues for Phase Two of the project, which includes the restoration of our existing 51st Street home which will combine with the new facility in a wonderful architectural manifestation of “the old and the new”—so the ghosts from our history will nourish the spirit of innovation in the New Irish Arts Center for evermore. We are also building a nest egg to support the landmark programming we are preparing for our inaugural seasons. See pages 5-6 to learn more about how to get involved in the campaign.

In the meantime, our Spring 2019 season has some of the most exhilarating, intimate performances you’ll experience anywhere. Three artists we’ve presented in different settings—Utsav Lal, Loah, and Colm Mac Con Iomaire—come together for a weeklong residency (pages 33-34), and three more—David Keenan (page 18), Inni-K (page 12), and Lisa Lambe (page 31)—take the stage in special solo engagements; Fishamble returns with Margaret McAuliffe’s The Humours of Bandon, a hilarious take on the Irish step dancing world (page 26); and our Movements series continues with MSNBC’s Steve Kornacki and The Hill’s Niall Stanage (page 19). Celtic Appalachian Celebration returns as part of Carnegie Hall’s Migrations festival (pages 21-22), and Declan O’Rourke presents Chronicles of the Great Irish Famine, the RTÉ Folk Award-winning song cycle, performed in New York and around the U.S. with an eight piece, all-star ensemble (pages 13-14). Plus a new work from Paul Muldoon and Jim Lockhart, “The Lament for Art O’Leary” (page 17); a special evening with author Colm Tóibín (page 24); a contemporary Irish dance showcase with 92Y (pages 29-30); the beloved series Muldoon’s Picnic (pages 15-16), Tobin’s Run on 51 (page 27), and Sundays at Seven (page 23); Book Day (page 20) and book nights; festivals, films and family fare; classes and community events; and more. Be a part of it all! Come to shows. Take a class. Become a member and support the Annual Fund or the capital campaign. A native of Peekskill, NY, Brooklyn-based artist Dannielle Tegeder received a BFA from the State University of New York at Purchase and an MFA in painting and drawing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Tegeder works in the intersection of visual art and literature. For the past 15 years, her work—paintings and drawings, plus large-scale wall drawings, sculptural objects, and animation—has explored abstraction and the legacy of modernism, and has been exhibited in more than 100 national and international gallery exhibitions. She has held teaching positions at Cornell University and SUNY Purchase, and is currently an associate professor of art at the City University of New York at Lehman College. Through a grandmother who immigrated to New York from Country Kerry, Tegeder recently became an Irish citizen.

Artist Talk & Reception THURSDAY, APRIL 18 | 6 PM FREE | Reservations encouraged AT IRISH ARTS CENTER
Artist Mairead McCormack’s work on Irish linen—born from a fascination with her native Northern Ireland’s legacy of textile manufacturing—examines the interplay between the machine-made and the handmade, and the archival and the contemporary. Using embroidery, darning, collaging, printing, drawn-threading and digital design, McCormack manipulates her linen canvases with materials like colored fibers, dyes, and found documents—including paperwork from the storied Old Bleach Linen Company in Randalstown, Co. Antrim. Mairead McCormack was a featured artist at Northern Ireland’s first-ever Linen Biennale in 2018. She has been awarded a 2019 residency in India by the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, where she will study the traditions of natural dying and printing. Formidable Parallels is the second of three exhibitions at Irish Arts Center with a focus on textile art. The first, Dublin-based Bernie Leahy’s Why Are We, was exhibited in fall of 2018.

FILM
Lomax in Éirinn
Film screening presented in association with Irish Film Institute, followed by conversation with Iarla Ó Lionáird FRIDAY, APRIL 5 | 7:30 PM $15 general / $12 members AT IRISH ARTS CENTER
In 1951, the legendary musicologist Alan Lomax came to Ireland as the first stop on a mission to preserve the traditional music of the world. His travels up and down the west coast recording the songs of its people produced Ireland, the seminal album that helped ignite the trad revival of the 1970s and whose influence carries to this day. Through breathtaking archival footage and interviews with contemporary artists, and featuring exclusive performances by Steve Earle, Clannad, Nell Ní Chróinín and Slow Moving Clouds, Lomax in Éirinn uncovers the story of how an American song-collector made an indelible mark on Irish cultural history and forever changed the way Ireland was perceived across the globe. A conversation with Iarla Ó Lionáird, sean-nós singer and member of the Gloaming, and Pegi Vail, co-director of NYU’s Center for Media, Culture, and History, will follow the screening. Directed by Declan McGrath Narrated by Pól Brennan (Clannad) 2018, Documentary, 52 minutes In English and Irish with subtitles

Tobin’s Run on 51: Night Dreamer MUSIC
A jazz series curated by Christine Tobin and Phil Robson THURSDAY, APRIL 18 | 7:30 PM $24 general / $20 members AT IRISH ARTS CENTER
Featuring Christine Tobin, vocals Phil Robson, guitar Dayna Stephens, saxophone Dezron Douglas, upright bass and more
Our next installment of the wonderful Tobin’s Run on 51 pays homage to the music of living legend Wayne Shorter, one of the most influential composers and saxophonists of the 20th and 21st centuries. Shorter’s seminal body of work—from the Miles Davis Quintet, early recordings with Art Blakey, and Weather Report’s groundbreaking fusion, to collaborations with Herbie Hancock, Joni Mitchell, and prominent Brazilian musicians like Milton Nascimento—has earned him 10 Grammy Awards and a formidable position in the annals of jazz history. He remains a pioneer to this day, generating new music with his own groups and the likes of Esperanza Spalding, Nora Jones, and some of the brightest names in contemporary jazz. Tobin’s Run on 51 is presented by award-winning Irish vocalist, songwriter, and composer Christine Tobin and acclaimed jazz guitarist Phil Robson, bringing together some of New York’s best Irish and international musicians to play sets and share film clips and stories about jazz music’s greatest artists and treasures.

Debut Voices: Helen Cullen The Lost Letters of William Woolf TUESDAY, JUNE 4 | 7:30 PM
AT IRISH ARTS CENTER
FREE Inside the Dead Letters Depot in East London, William Woolf is a letter detective who spends his days solving mysteries: missing postcodes, illegible handwriting, rain-smudged ink, lost address labels, forgotten street names. But when William discovers letters addressed simply to “My Great Love,” his work takes on new meaning as he must solve his most important mystery yet. Might he be the intended recipient? Could he be her great love? Irish writer Helen Cullen reads from her debut novel, The Lost Letters of William Woolf, a rumination on the lost art and power of letterwriting, and the colliding realities of magic and pragmatism in love. Conversation with the author and reception to follow.

Michelle Esch (IAC dance instructor) received a BFA in dance from Rutgers University Mason Gross School of the Arts and has studied jazz and musical theater at the Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival. A current member of Darrah Carr Dance Company, she’s worked with Syncopated City Dance Company/Swing FX, Flexicurve, Meagan Woods & Company, and EDP Dance Project. Additional dance credits include A Jazz Happening with Chet Walker, Flightless Birds at the Joyce Soho, Cirque du Soleil’s Poetic Social Mission, Jazz at Lincoln Center’s spring gala, Monday Night Entertainment at the Rainbow Room, Midsummer Night Swing at Lincoln Center, Dance Legends at the Hammerstein Ballroom, and more. Michelle has also taught and choreographed for the Discover Opera graduate program at Manhattan School of Music, the Buck Hill Skytop Music Festival, Arts Horizons, the Laurie Berkner Band Greatest Hits tour, and several music videos. What led you to dance? I have loved music and movement since I was a child. Dance for me was a perfect combination of the two. My parents started me in classes when I was two years old and I’ve never stopped. Throughout my training I always took as many lessons and styles of dance as I could, and as I grew older I realized dance was the career path I wanted to take. The discipline required to make it in this field has helped me develop skills that have served me in many aspects of life. What advice would you give to new Irish dance students? We all start as beginners! I love meeting students who are open to trying new things. I have found they’re often surprised by how much they can accomplish over a couple of weeks. What does a day in your life look like? It really depends on the day of the week or sometimes even what time of year it is. Constants in my life include rehearsing and performing with Darrah Carr Dance Company, teaching classes and workshops throughout the tri-state area, and working for the Laurie Berkner Band! I often start the day in either a dance or hot yoga class and then travel to the Laurie Berkner Band offices where I am a social media/marketing director, tour manager/stage manager, and choreographer/casting director for music videos and concerts across the country. I have always kept a fairly flexible work schedule in order to perform, teach, and choreograph when those opportunities arise. I currently teach Irish, contemporary, ballet, swing and tap dance. Name something about yourself others would find surprising. Whenever I need something different to wear, I can often shop in my closet and put together a unique look with clothes I already own. What’s your biggest vice? My biggest vice is coffee! I love what I do so much that it’s hard for me to say no to new opportunities. Coffee helps to get me through some pretty long days!

A limited number of scholarships are available. For more information, please contact classes@irishartscenter.org. To learn more about contributing to the Bill Ochs Scholarship Fund, please contact Olivia Ford at 212-757-3318 x226 or olivia@irishartscenter.org.

Cúpla Focal: Irish for Public Speaking With Bláthnaid O'Donoghue SATURDAY, MARCH 2 | 1 PM – 3 PM AT IRISH ARTS CENTER $26 general / $21 members Add cúpla focal (a “couple words” as Gaeilge) to your vocabulary! Intercultural Connections Series with Mick Moloney: If it Wasn’t for the Irish and the Jews WEDNESDAY, MARCH 27 | 7 PM – 9 PM AT IRISH ARTS CENTER $20 general / $16 members Taking its title and inspiration from a 1912 song composed by William Jerome (real name: William Flannery) and Jean Schwartz, “If It Wasn’t for the Irish and the Jews” is an entertaining and insightful examination of cross-pollination in a bygone era of U.S. cultural history: when vaudeville and Tin Pan Alley flourished with the fertile contributions of Irish and Jewish songwriters, theatrical producers, and music publishers. The stories of former Broadway luminaries and a trove of archival film footage populate Dr. Moloney’s richly illustrated talk about the nimble wit, socioeconomic observation, exuberant rhythms, melodic charm, and sentimental appeal that defined this under-appreciated chapter of our musical heritage. This is the second edition of Intercultural Connections, Dr. Moloney’s lecture series exploring the contributions of Irish artists in a global context.
Traditional Irish Singing with Clár Ní Argáin SATURDAY, JUNE 15 | 2 PM – 4 PM AT IRISH ARTS CENTER $40 general / $32 members Award-winning sean-nós vocalist and educator Clár Ní Argáin takes you on a journey of songs from her native south Kerry and Ireland’s other Gaeltacht regions. Witness a love that is lost or denied, celebrate a past glory at football, hunting, or rowing, feel the fire of political outcry, and know the heart-breaking hunger for one last glimpse of home. Two songs will be chosen to learn, one in English and one in Irish. All levels welcome. Fluency in Irish is not necessary.
