Silver Linings Dear Friends, As we continue to adapt to transformative challenges — both enduring and unforeseen — there have been so many moments of beauty and grace we can’t help but look forward with hope. This spring, amid the intensification of COVID-19, we turned first to our teachers and students, working with them to re-platform our education program online for the first time. And what a response: 26 of our 40 classes found a home in the digital sphere, with booming enrollment from 15 states across the country. In fact, it has gone so well that we have decided to launch our first ever summer term — online — which we are proud to share with you in the pages that follow. If you’ve ever wandered through a session and wondered what it would be like to try an instrument or dance; wondered what it would be like to learn a new language, or a new craft, let this be the summer you take those first new steps. Our special six-week summer semester begins the week of July 6 and features courses in music, step dance, Irish language, playwriting and storytelling. In the meantime, we continue to offer moments of hope and inspiration through our many streams of digital programming — including At Home With Irish Arts Center, a series of new, commissioned work by our local and international artistic community; Live From Irish Arts Center, a curated selection of performances from our intimate theatre, captured through the years and introduced by the artists; our Irish Arts Center Poem of the Week, featuring special moments from eleven years of PoetryFest; and our popular Irish Word of the Week series, curated by Darach Ó Séaghdha of @theirishfor Twitter account and illustrated with visual responses from Irish artists. Finally, we are thrilled to share the news that after a delay of nearly three months, construction of our landmark permanent home has resumed. In this uncertain public health environment, with so little to be sure of, there is one thing we can all count on — the New Irish Arts Center beckons on the horizon. Hope on the Horizon With the resumption of construction after a nearly three month delay, we look forward with hope to a brighter horizon, and are working hard to prepare for the day when we can all gather again to enjoy transformative cultural experiences with great artists in an environment of Irish hospitality. In the meantime, we continue to deliver on our mission with free digital programming across a range of disciplines and online classes. However, with increased costs of construction and lost revenues from suspended in-person programming, we need your help more than ever to sustain the organization through this disruption, and make sure we are ready when it’s safe for us all to come together again.

ONLINE CLASSES WITH IRISH ARTS CENTER This spring, thanks to our wonderful roster of teaching artists, we adapted quickly to move classes online, opening our doors to anyone from anywhere who wanted to join our robust student community. A course for learners with no prior experience, covering how to properly hold the fiddle and bow, tune your instrument, and produce a good tone. By term’s end, students will be able to play one or two Irish tunes.
For students who have completed Fiddle I but have no prior music experience otherwise, and/or those who have fewer than six months’ experience and want to continue to build basic skills and confidence.
The beginning student—those who have taken Fiddle II or have less than one year’s experience— will continue to learn the technical aspects of fiddle playing while working on common melodies, polkas, and jigs.

What’s the difference between a violin and a fiddle? A violin sings, and a fiddle dances.
Students focus on building their repertoire of common session tunes and begin to explore elements of musicality and theory, including how to participate in a session and create sets. Ideal for those who have taken Fiddle III or have more than one year’s experience with the instrument.
Increase your repertoire while playing with others. You’ll learn five or six tunes, mostly jigs and reels, while exploring ornamentation and phrasing.
Students attending this class should feel comfortable playing common tunes up to speed with other musicians. You will learn new reels, jigs, hornpipes, and an air, all while developing ornamentation, style, and musicianship. Improvisation and harmony will be touched upon.

Learn the basics of the Irish drum, with a focus on the reel and jig rhythms. You’ll listen to various styles of traditional music and learn bodhrán etiquette for sessions. Enthusiasm and a love for music are the only requirements for enrollment.
Level II introduces the techniques needed to produce the variety of sounds that accompany and enhance melody instruments. Students should feel confident with the reel and jig rhythms in order to fully benefit.

This class is for you if you’ve taken Tin Whistle II or have otherwise mastered basic technique and are able to pick up tunes by ear without difficulty. You will begin to learn ornamentation and expand your repertoire.

A boot-camp introduction to Irish step dancing— absolutely no previous experience is necessary. Students will learn the foundation, form, and technique of Irish dance, starting with basic movements and progressing to light-shoe reels and jigs. We’ll learn a few solo steps and round out the term with a group dance that pieces together all the elements learned over the term!

Whether you’re interested in full-length plays, musicals, short plays, or other forms, all dramatic writing employs essential ideas and techniques to bring out the drama in any narrative. Explore theatricality and the craft of dramatic writing, and walk away with a self-identified set of skills you can use to craft dynamic stories for the world to experience.

Students will go from writing a short play or scene to attempting to write a full-length script. CULTURAL IMMIGRANT INITIATIVE Thank you to Council Member Daniel Dromm for awarding Irish Arts Center a Cultural Immigrant Initiative grant to return to P.S. 69Q in Jackson Heights, Queens, this past spring for an Irish dance residency! After being in residence in the school from January to March, we continued to provide weekly dance classes online for 180 students in the second, third, and fourth grades through June. Special thanks to our P.S. 69Q school liaison, Deborah Strack Cregan, and to teaching artists Jonathan Matthews and Michelle Esch of Darrah Carr Dance, for adapting our program for the new digital sphere and ensuring NYC kids can keep on dancing.
