The

New Irish Being forced to relocate during construction has provided us a golden opportunity to innovate and expand our reach. A chance to experiment with new programming. A pathway to develop new audiences, engage more artists, and build a wider profile. So in addition to moving our most intimate programming into our temporary space, we have challenged ourselves to develop new programming in partnership with like-minded institutions, taking the Irish Arts Center experience across the City. We’ve become so excited by this challenge that we decided to ramp up those partnerships now—while we continue to enjoy our final seasons in the Donaghy Theatre at Irish Arts Center.

Building a New Irish Arts Center

has never been about simply upgrading to a new building—though given the state of our crumbling three-story tenement that would surely be reason enough! It’s about so much more than that. It is about reimagining what any Irish Arts Center can do in a city as diverse and dynamic as New York. It is about engaging today’s global culture by bringing you closer to the excellence and originality of contemporary Irish work. It is about building a platform for creation, collaboration and cross-cultural conversation. Whether it is moving and groundbreaking live theatre, thrilling and transporting music and dance, or thought-provoking film, literature and talks, it is about building a seedbed of ideas and inspiration that transcends bricks and mortar. And it is about doing all of this together in the spirit of Irish warmth and hospitality, sharing our talents and our passion with an everexpanding universe of artists, audiences, supporters, and institutions, tapping into the amazing assortment of people that make New York the greatest cultural melting pot in the world.

In September, we launch our first-ever collaboration with Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), one of the country’s foremost multidisciplinary cultural institutions for the contemporary performing arts. As part of the 2014 Next Wave Festival, we are thrilled to join BAM in presenting four exciting contemporary Irish theatre works: Olwen Fouéré’s astonishing riverrun, inspired by Joyce’s Finnegans Wake; Samuel Beckett’s Embers, by Ireland’s great experimenters Pan Pan Theatre; the Royal Court production of Beckett’s Not I, Footfalls, Rockaby; and Landmark Productions returns with Mark O’Rowe’s dazzling Howie the Rookie, starring Tom Vaughan-Lawlor (Love/Hate). See pages 9-10 for more details.

We now begin an exciting period of transition and growth. The upcoming 2014-2015 seasons will be the last in our current facility. Soon we will break ground on the New Irish Arts Center and during that period of construction, we will move some of our programming and all of our classes to a temporary facility on 52nd Street. But that’s not all.

FALL 2014

Arts Center

...

our Transition Continues... In October, our journey continues downtown when we join forces with Abrons Arts Center on the Lower East Side to present this year’s Irish Times Theatre Award-winner for Best Production: Lippy, directed by Ben Kidd and Bush Moukarzel, and created by Dead Centre, whose stunning Souvenir dazzled New York audiences last fall.

This fall we also launch Muldoon’s Picnic, a monthly residency with Pulitzer Prize-winning Northern Irish poet Paul Muldoon. Once a month, anchored by his band Wayside Shrines, Paul will take Irish Arts Center audiences on a journey of words and music, with special guests from the world of literature including Robert Pinsky, Joyce Carol Oates, Zadie Smith, Nick Laird, Tracy K. Smith, and more.

And we are back at Symphony Space, our home away from home, as we move our popular, sold-out holiday celebration An Irish Christmas to the Peter Jay Sharp Theatre on 95th Street and Broadway.

Meanwhile, back at the Donaghy Theatre, you won’t want to miss artist-inresidence Camille O’Sullivan, Ireland’s great contemporary chanteuse who has packed houses from Melbourne and Sydney to Edinburgh. If you like great singing—brimming with energy and emotion in the style of “Sally Bowles, Patti Smith and PJ Harvey” (The Scotsman)—you are going to love Camille.

And in this season of transition, we’re also reinventing our annual Spirit of Ireland Gala, hosted every year by our honorary co-chairs Liam Neeson and Gabriel Byrne. This year we are thrilled to announce an exciting new venue, Cipriani 42nd Street, as we honor the astonishingly talented Martin Hayes for his extraordinary contribution to Irish music. Save the date of Friday, October 10th for the party of the year with the incredible community of supporters who help make all this great programming possible. That’s only a taste of what’s in store. Turn the pages that follow and curate your own Irish Arts Center season in New York City. Looking forward to seeing you!

Recent Events Spring Cocktails 2014: Celebrating the Irish on Broadway Four great champions of Irish culture—Council Members Daniel Dromm, Corey Johnson, Jimmy Van Bramer, and Congressman Joseph Crowley—joined more than 100 IAC supporters in toasting the phenomenal Irish talent that has taken Broadway by storm this year. With appearances from Chris O’Dowd and Jim Norton from Of Mice and Men, IAC veteran Pat Shortt and his fellow actors from The Cripple of Inishmaan, and a surprise performance from five-time Tony Award-nominee Kelli O’Hara, it was another great IAC night to remember.

(le) poisson rouge may need a new roof after Irish supergroup The Gloaming rocked the Greenwich Village hotspot on Saturday, June 21st. New York pianist Thomas Bartlett (aka Doveman), Chicago guitarist Dennis Cahill, Irish fiddle master Martin Hayes, hardanger innovator Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and Irish singer Iarla Ó Lionáird gave one of the most exciting and emotional performances of the Irish Arts Center season, “yielding two standing ovations” (Paul Keating, Irish Voice).

An Taoiseach Celebrates Book Day and the New IAC “I’m impressed by what I’ve seen” and “I’m impressed by its potential” began the remarks of An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Ireland’s Prime Minister, in his visit to Irish Arts Center on St. Patrick’s Day 2014. He expressed his commitment to work with the City of New York and private donors to see the development of the New Irish Arts Center to completion. He is photographed with IAC Executive Director Aidan Connolly, IAC Vice Chair Pauline Turley, Manhattan Borough President Gale A. Brewer and Council Member Corey Johnson. The visit coincided with the exclusive announcement of the designs for the new Center on the cover of The New York Times Arts section, and our fourth annual Book Day, in collaboration with New York City Council, where dozens of volunteers fanned out across the five boroughs to distribute thousands of free books by Irish authors to New Yorkers of all backgrounds.

100 Years and Two Great Nights of Dubliners with Symphony Space and WNYC Dublin Fringe Double Bill The U.S. Premieres of Swing with Fishamble: The New Play Company & Beowulf: The Blockbuster with Pat Moylan Productions delighted and moved Donaghy Theatre audiences throughout the Spring. A double bill of plays launched by the Dublin Fringe Festival—one of the largest festivals of its kind in Europe—Swing & Beowulf earned a Critic’s Pick from The New York Times, who praised the paired one-acts as “dazzling... poignant...epic...”

The annual Bloomsday on Broadway tradition, created 32 years ago by the late, great Symphony Space founder Isaiah Sheffer, continued at the historic Upper West Side music hall with readings in honor of Dubliners’ 100th anniversary by Cynthia Nixon, Malachy McCourt, Kelli O’Hara, and others. Two weeks later we were delighted to launch our first partnership with The Greene Space and New York Public Radio (WNYC/ WQXR) for a live radio play, DUBLINERS: A QUARTET, adapted by playwright Arthur Yorinks and performed by a wonderful chamber ensemble of actors and musicians. This immersive theatrical experience is available as a podcast and on-demand video on thegreenespace.org.

In and out goes the sound of the sea and beside it sits Henry, remembering. The troubled protagonist of Beckett’s 1959 radio play, Embers, cannot stop talking—to his dead father, drowned in the waves; to his dead wife, Ada; and to himself, a failed writer—leaving a twisted thicket of regrets and hallucinations for the audience to navigate. In this ghostly production from Ireland’s Pan Pan Theatre (All That Fall, BAM’s 2012 Next Wave Festival), two actors set up behind the eyes of a massive skull and, with the help of a sound artist, enliven the fevered mind of a man struggling to speak his world back into meaningful existence. “Fouéré’s bold, funny and eloquent drama might just be life-changing.” —THE TELEGRAPH

“riverrun, past Eve and Adam’s, from swerve of shore to bend of bay...” Adherents of James Joyce’s 1939 tome Finnegans Wake espouse the idea that its language comes to life only when read aloud. Singlehandedly validating that claim, formidable Irish actress Olwen Fouéré, assuming the role of the river Liffey, offers this incandescent interpretation of the final section of Joyce’s “book of the night.” A force of nature possessed of every crackling phrase, Fouéré (who also adapted and directs the piece) turns Joyce’s prose into an undulating soundscape, inhabiting the voice of Anna Livia Plurabelle, the river’s personification, as she swells and surges her way through the Wake’s end and out to sea. In this staging of three one-woman plays by Samuel Beckett, directed by the playwright’s longtime friend Walter Asmus, the obsessive rhythms of abject existence—rambling, pacing, and rocking—are laid bare. Irish actor Lisa Dwan, who drew ecstatic reviews for her performances at the Royal Court Theatre and in the West End, masterfully triangulates the existential void. In Not I, a woman—reduced to a mere mouth, suspended in total darkness— seeks solace in a blisteringly paced stream of her own broken speech. In Footfalls, a tattered soul, drained of life, paces relentlessly outside her dying mother’s bedroom. And in Rockaby, a woman slowly withdraws from the world, rocked to eternal sleep in her mother’s chair. Running Time: 55 min

A tale of two halves, narrated first by the Howie, then picked up by the Rookie, unfolds within a landscape of feverish drinking, casual sex and visceral violence. Meet unforgettable characters along the way from Ladyboy, the psychotic thug hell-bent on avenging the deaths of his fighting fish, to monstrous Avalanche, clad in ski pants, looking for love from her bar stool. Mark O’Rowe’s critically acclaimed twohander was first produced in 1999 and took the theatrical world by storm. Originally staged in New York in 2001 at PS122, this brutal but funny script is transformed into a one-man show brimming with ferocious lyricism and coruscating wit. Tom VaughanLawlor (RTÉ’s Love/Hate) prowls, dances and dives to give an electrifying full-throated performance, for which he was named Best Actor at The Irish Times Theatre Awards.

One of Ireland’s leading theatre producers Landmark Productions returns to New York City following Enda Walsh’s dark solo comedy Misterman. The play, a co-production with Galway International Arts Festival, starred Cillian Murphy and played at St. Ann’s Warehouse in 2011. Landmark was last seen at Irish Arts Center in spring 2013 with Deirdre Kinahan’s These Halcyon Days. For ages 16 and up. Please note the play contains sexual content and strong language. Fourteen years ago in Leixlip, Co. Kildare, an aunt and three nieces made an extraordinary decision which seemed to defy explanation. They boarded themselves into their home and entered a suicide pact that lasted 40 days. The mysterious hunger strike is the starting point for a theatrical investigation which is both social and metaphysical. We didn’t know these women. We weren’t there. We have no idea what they said. This is not their story. Playing with narrative form and discarding the whys and wherefores, Lippy was widely regarded as one of the most extraordinary works to come out of Ireland last year, from one of the country’s most exciting new companies, Dead Centre (Souvenir, (S)quark! ).

MUSIC

Song Lives Emmett Tinley and Lisa O’Neill SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 1 | 8 PM Singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Emmett Tinley is best known as frontman for the folk/indie band The Prayer Boat and later for his solo work, where he was nominated for the Choice Music Prize (the Irish Mercury Prize) for Best Irish Album. Born in Chicago, Illinois but raised in Co. Wicklow, Tinley has travelled extensively and lived in many different places, inspiring his music. His voice has been likened to that of Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke, Chris Martin of Coldplay and Fran Healy of Travis, and the Irish Independent says he “possesses a range that would make opera singers weep.” Don’t miss his appearance in SongLives in advance of the release of his third solo album.

“Up there with…Rufus Wainwright or Jeff Buckley. Truly sublime.”

“Gorgeous…meticulously crafted pop.” – BILLBOARD MAGAZINE

– THE IRISH TIMES

Hailing from Co. Cavan, Lisa O’Neill’s haunting voice and witty observations on modern Irish life have gained her worldwide popularity. From Body & Soul to Electric Picnic to an impromptu seisiún, Lisa’s live performances are beguiling affairs of banter and old-style folk intimacy. Over the last couple of years she has toured North America, Canada, Europe, Scotland & the UK, opening for David Gray, Mick Flannery, Angel Olsen, and Glen Hansard. Subtle enough for tender reminiscence and powerful enough to bring the house down, Lisa’s voice is an instrument unto itself.

“O’Neill is one of the most captivating singer-songwriters around.” – THE IRISH TIMES

Mick Hanly and Ryan Morgan WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12 | 8 PM

“Ireland has produced a fair share of accomplished songwriters but only a handful can match Mick Hanly when it comes to pure songwriting craft.” – THE EXAMINER Queens-based songwriter Ryan Morgan has been playing with the Big City Folk collective in and around New York since 2010. In that time, he’s released one full-length album and two acoustic EPs and played hundreds of gigs. Morgan’s songs are “like a Gonzo version of the news...combining extremely literate lyrics with contagiously catchy musical ideas. Well formed and thoroughly unpretentious” (Chris Michael, music blogger).

A mighty performer from Limerick whose internationally acclaimed songs have been recorded by artists such as Hal Ketchum, Delbert McClinton, Christy Moore, Dolores Keane, Mary Black and Ronnie Drew. Mick Hanly’s recording career began with the seminal album Celtic Folkweave with Micheál Ó Dómhnaill (The Bothy Band) for Polydor. Subsequent albums for Mulligan, Warner and Round Tower followed, the latter featuring songs such as “Without the Fanfare,” “All I Remember,” and “Past the Point of Rescue” which established Hanly as one of Ireland’s foremost singersongwriters. He was chosen to replace the legendary Christy Moore in the Irish folk-rock band Moving Hearts. Hal Ketchum’s recording of “Past the Point of Rescue” won Hanly two BMI awards for “most played country song” and “one million radio plays.”

“Ryan Morgan is an excellent storyteller...inventive and original.” – NIALL CONNOLLY, IRISH SINGER-SONGWRITER

Mary Coughlan FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5 | 8 PM Throughout her 25 year extraordinary recording career—which includes hits “Invisible To You,” and “The Double Cross”—singer Mary Coughlan from County Galway has drawn heavily from her legendary heroes—Billie Holiday, Peggy Lee, Van Morrison, and Edith Piaf. She crosses seamlessly from jazz to blues to folk and back again with a smoky, bluesy drawl that surprises and seduces.

“Coughlan is musical royalty in Ireland, a position she has occupied for the last 25 years… she is Ireland’s Billie Holiday.” – THE GUARDIAN

“A powerful and moving account of the Chernobyl disaster.” – THE GUARDIAN All That Is Solid Melts Into Air is a gripping end-of-empire novel, charting the collapse of the Soviet Union through the focal point of the Chernobyl disaster. Part historical epic, part love story, the novel loosely weaves the stories of a handful of characters whose lives are altered, both directly and indirectly, by effects of the 1986 catastrophe. From Ireland, Darragh has worked as a theatre director throughout Europe and the USA. He lives in New York.

Eimear McBride

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 30 | 7:30 PM

Moderated by Rivka Galchen (author of Atmospheric Disturbances and American Innovations) “A Girl is a Half-formed Thing is uncompromising in style and subject matter... it will stay with every reader.” – THE GUARDIAN A Girl Is A Half-formed Thing tells the story of a young woman’s complex relationship with her family and her struggle to stay intact in the face of trauma. Capturing the space between thought and language, McBride creates an extraordinary intimacy with the reader, offering a plunge into the thoughts, feelings, and chaotic sexuality of a vulnerable and isolated protagonist. Eimear recently won the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year award, the Desmond Elliot Prize, and has also won Goldsmiths Prize and Baileys Prize for Women’s Fiction (formerly the Orange Prize), and has been shortlisted for the Folio Prize. The novel languished unpublished for a decade and now is the subject of advertisements on buses and in shopping centers across UK and Ireland.

Emma Donoghue’s latest novel, a murder mystery set in nineteenth-century San Francisco, is Frog Music. “Like and unlike her stunning Room, this novel lifts into view a strange crime, a remarkable woman, and is a Ringling Brothers-grade feat of narrative strength,” says Darin Strauss, author of Half a Life. Ruth Rendell’s new novel, a thriller sparked by the discovery of bones in a tin box, is The Girl Next Door. She is “the most brilliant mystery novelist of our time,” wrote Patricia Cornwell. “Her stories are a lesson in a human nature as capable of the most exotic love as it is of the cruelest murder. She does not avert her gaze and magnificently triumphs in a style that is uniquely hers and mesmerizing.”

Gallery viewings by appointment Monday-Friday | 10 AM – 6 PM Please call 212-757-3318

Working with a radical attitude towards tradition, Helen O’Leary is influenced by memories of growing up on a County Wexford farm, and uses simple materials and unglamorous gestures to reapply her own story to her art form. By dissembling the wooden structures of previous paintings—stretchers, panels, and frames—O’Leary transforms and reinterprets the original painting’s rules to offer a fresh perspective on the artistic experience. With both serenity and abandon, these sculptures imagine the possibility that painting might take root and find a place to press forward into fertile new terrain.

Bill will teach a completely different set of tunes from those taught at his previous Ornamentation Boot Camps, so students who attended those sessions are encouraged to also attend this one.

Ornamentation Boot Camp is designed for musicians who feel comfortable playing Irish dance tunes at a moderate pace, but who are novices at ornamentation or would like to review the techniques. The day will start with instruction in simple ornaments (cuts and strikes) and then move on to compound ornaments (rolls and crans). Each ornament is presented within a tune. You’ll not only learn new techniques, but also come away with a series of great new pieces to add to your repertoire. Bring a tin whistle, low whistle, uilleann pipe chanter, or flute pitched in D. Players of Boehm system flutes are welcome to participate. The use of recording devices is strongly encouraged. Transcriptions will provided for all tunes. There is limited seating for pipers at this event, so please reserve early. For questions about the workshop, please contact Bill Ochs at 212-247-3231 or bill@pennywhistle.com.

APRIL 23-25, 2015 “This is what the future sounds like.” – THE IRISH TIMES A collaboration between fiddler Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh and jazz clarinettist Seán Mac Erlaine already sounds an intriguing proposition, but throw in American hard shoe dancer Nic Gareiss and Swedish percussionist Petter Berndalen and the results are something quite special. The search for common ground between this eclectic quartet has yielded a rich crop of ideas and a debut album that sounds like nothing else. This Is How We Fly play everything from Irish fiddle tunes to Appalachian folk and polskas from Berndalen’s native Sweden. Shot through with the exuberant, anarchic spirits of folk and jazz, this is traditional music as you’ve never heard it before.

In our third collaboration with 92Y Unterberg Poetry Center, we are thrilled to present:

Meet Our Teachers DAN HUNT, SET DANCE INSTRUCTOR Dan Hunt has been a member of the Irish Arts Center since 1986. A former merchant seaman, Dan came to the Irish Arts Center because he was looking for a club and a community where he could pursue his love of Irish music and culture. Smitten with Irish folk dancing, he attended dance classes taught by most of the well known New Yorkarea teachers. Later he attended set dance workshops given in the U.S. and Ireland by such legendary dance masters as Joe and Siobhan O’Donavan, Connie Ryan, Pat Murphy, Timmy McCarthy, Larry Lynch, and Padraic McEneneny. He started teaching Céilí and country Set Dances at the Irish Arts Center in 1988. Dan’s approach to teaching Irish folk dance is more than mere choreography. In his class he insists that only when you’ve begun to move to the phrasing of the music and above all, learn the footwork and movements unique to each dance, will you experience the true pleasure of the sets.

“Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, you will what you imagine and at last you create what you will.” - GEORGE BERNARD SHAW

Designed by Ireland’s award-winning Office of Public Works, the New Irish Arts Center will be a global platform for the best of Irish arts, an incubator for exciting new work, a seedbed of ideas and inspiration.

HOME An intimate 199-seat state-of-the-art performance center featuring world-class theatre, music and dance, literature and conversation, film and media. The design preserves the intimacy that is central to the Irish Arts Center experience with excellent sightlines from every seat; greater height, width, depth, and backof-house to enhance our production capability in all disciplines; and technology to project our dynamic culture far and wide.

An upper-floor 1,200 square foot studio built expressly for dance classes, rehearsals, and residencies. There will be an adjacent outdoor terrace.

The ground floor of the new Center features an intimate cafĂŠ venue for music and literature, films, classes, conversations, and special events, allowing for informal programming in a social context that can include food and beverage.
