Breaking Boundaries, B A Creative Ireland and a New Irish Arts Center In times of global shifts, when foundations of larger institutions shake, new voices are empowered to express a new identity. In Ireland, we have a new Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar, whose background and identity is a manifestation of a New Ireland. A new initiative, Creative Ireland, has been launched to place culture and the arts at the center of public policy. What a time to come together to build a new Irish Arts Center—not just a new building, but a new way of engaging with the world, bringing people of all backgrounds together through the excellence and dynamism of 21st century Irish culture. What a time to express our identity as defined not only by our traditions, but how we share those traditions with others—other cultures, other ethnicities, and other immigrant communities. Our artistic home is an international Irish cultural embassy where boundaries are blurred, erased, reshaped, turned on their head. Boundaries are of course nothing new for great artists to navigate—boundaries of genre, of style, of experience, of identity. The New Irish Arts Center—our ethos, our community, and our platform—is unbounded. Unbounded by an old building, a new building, our Hell’s Kitchen neighborhood, the island of Manhattan, and even the great State of New York. We are a gateway from Ireland to America, a throughway in a feedback loop toward a shared imagination, one that opens doors, transcends limits, and brings people together to celebrate their common humanity. We are a beating heart in a global diaspora that is dynamic and diverse, connected and engaged.

Our fall season brings this all to life. We begin with the second installment of Movements, our new public affairs series, featuring former U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power in conversation with The Hill’s Niall Stanage (page 10). We animate the urban landscape with Beckett in the City: The Women Speak, an astonishing, moving site specific work from Company SJ, directed by Sarah Jane Scaife and starring Bríd Ní Neachtáin, Michèle Forbes, and Joan Davis (pages 13 – 14). We hit the road with Liam Ó Maonlaí and Cassandra Wilson, bringing the fruits of last year’s extraordinary Masters in Collaboration Series to audiences in Chicago and Los Angeles (pages 25 – 26). We welcome back the beloved Camille O’Sullivan with a brand new show celebrating the music of Jacques Brel (page 18), and composer Trevor Knight with his wild Weimar riff on the words of Dorothy Parker, The Whistling Girl (page 24). We embark on our first festival partnership with National Sawdust, one of the most exciting new generative music spaces in the City (page 20). We continue wonderful IAC traditions like Muldoon’s Picnic (page 9), PoetryFest (page 22), our annual Winter Solstice Celebration (page 28), and a full roster of classes in music, dance, language, and literature (pages 29 – 31). And we unveil a brand new website at irishartscenter.org, a big step in the redevelopment of our digital platform. All of this is only possible with the support of wonderful people who believe in this work. IAC Rece Book Day 2017: Culture Without Borders
St. Patrick’s Day 2017 brought wonderful news with the announcement of a $2 million economic development grant for our new home from Governor Andrew Cuomo. We also proudly joined with Consulate General of Mexico in New York, Ambassador Diego Gómez Pickering, and many Irish and Mexican community groups for our 7th annual Book Day, in partnership with New York City Council, distributing thousands of free books by Irish and Mexican authors to New Yorkers in all five boroughs.

IAC Recent News Site Dedication & Season Opening
The New Irish Arts Center began a new phase of development with the commencement of work on the Cybert Tire façade, which will be incorporated into the new building. Minister for Arts and Culture Heather Humphreys joined board members to announce an additional $1 million in support from the Irish government. In May, John Fitzpatrick, Chairman of The Ireland Funds, celebrated the Funds pledge of $1 million to the new building at a special site dedication kicking off the Enda Walsh/Galway International Arts Festival installation Rooms in our future home.

IAC Commissions As part of our mission to serve as a creative home for the development of new work, we are delighted to announce four new commissions across a range of disciplines supporting some of Ireland and Irish America’s most dynamic and innovative artists.
Deirdre Kinahan, Michael Brunnock, and Gerry Leonard Project: Ettie Playwright Deirdre Kinahan (Wild Sky, Halcyon Days, BOGBOY) will collaborate with New York City-based musicians Michael Brunnock and Gerry Leonard on Ettie, an ambitious new theatre production reimagining the life of Ettie Steinberg, Ireland’s only known Irish-Jewish citizen to have been murdered in the Holocaust.
David Bolger/CoisCeim Dance Theatre Project: Uncle Ray Uncle Ray is a new duet by David Bolger that reimagines the life and work of Ray Bolger, who was best known for his role as The Scarecrow in the MGM film The Wizard of Oz, and one of the greatest dancers of his generation. Uncle Ray is co-commissioned by Irish Arts Center and Project Arts Centre, and is scheduled to premiere in 2019 in Dublin.
Ettie is supported by The Arts Council of Ireland, Irish Arts Center, Meath County Council Arts Office, Pentabus UK, and Vibe Communications.

Project: Girl Song
Project: Olagón
Emma Martin, the creator of Dancehall, Tundra, and Dogs, and most recently the acclaimed choreographic sequence in Enda Walsh’s Arlington, conceives a new work, Girl Song, a visceral and sometimes absurdist ode to the extraordinary details of an ordinary existence, in a fierce and multi-layered dance-theatre creation.
Four-time Grammy-winning music ensemble Eighth Blackbird collaborates with longtime IAC artists composer/fiddler Dan Trueman, vocalist Iarla Ó Lionáird (The Gloaming, Ghost Trio, The Hunger), and Pulitzer-Prize winning poet Paul Muldoon, on Olagón. This 90-minute song cycle brings the centuries-old legend of the Táin Bó Cúailnge into the 21st century, exposing a martini-guzzling, pill-popping Queen Medhbh set against her lovelorn King Ailill, among other lovers.
Girl Song is a production of Dublin Theatre Festival and Noorderzon Festival (Groningen), and co-produced by NXTSTP, with the support of the Culture Programme of the European Union, Irish Arts Center, and Dance Ireland. Funded through an Arts Council Dance Project Award.
Co-commissioned by Poetry Foundation, The National Endowment for the Arts, The University of Richmond, Irish Arts Center, and Princeton University.

Walter Asmus directed Waiting for Godot and worked with Samuel Beckett in Berlin in the 1970s, author Edna O’Brien and publisher John Calder made up his circle in London, and actor Lisa Dwan gave life to Not I as never before. These are some of the luminaries who made up a world of Beckett, both during his life, and after his passing. John Minihan captures their essence in black and white portraiture, including his iconic images of Beckett himself.
In his artist talk Beckett and the Wake, John remembers spending time with a playwright who was often a reluctant subject and rarely posed.

Meet Our Teachers Stuart Jackson Teaches Family and Advanced Tin Whistle and The Music of Seamus Ennis (Uillean Pipes) Stuart is originally from Williamsburg, Virginia, and is now based in Brooklyn. He has played traditional Irish music on the uilleann pipes and the tin whistle for over a decade. After studying the pipes with Eliot Grasso and Mikie Smyth, further erudition came primarily from listening, absorbing, and interpreting old recordings from pipers such as Seamus Ennis, Tommy Reck, and Leo Rowsome. In addition to traditional music, he also holds a Master’s degree in contemporary percussion performance, which has influenced his approach to the uilleann pipes in traditional music, and led to experiments with it as a sound source in the interpretation of avant-garde scores. 1. How did you become an Uilleann Piper? I heard some recordings of Leo Rowsome, Willie Clancy, and Sean Og Potts, which set me on fire when I was around 13. Soon after that I started teaching myself on a cheap plastic practice set I had ordered online. Eventually, I obtained a decent set of pipes and started making regular trips to Baltimore to take lessons from Eliot Grasso. Eliot taught me pretty much everything I know. 2. What do you like most about playing music? Playing music can sometimes bring very ephemeral moments of what I can only describe as a sort of religious ecstasy. Sometimes I won’t experience a moment like this for months or years. I don’t understand how it works exactly, but it definitely catalyzes some kind of chemical change in my body. 3. What is your favorite thing about living in NYC? I can go anywhere on my bike, even leave NYC. 4. What is your least favorite thing about living in NYC? I often feel very claustrophobic. 5. What advice do you have for new music students? Don’t give up because of frustration. Frustration is a positive sign. If you are feeling frustrated it means you are in the middle of learning something that you currently don’t know how to do. Remain in the space of frustration, slow things down, and practice the source of frustration every day. Eventually, the frustration will melt away.

WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 | 6:30 PM – 9:30 PM $50 general / $40 members, students, and seniors Beckett’s concentration on the body and its experience in space is paramount to the understanding of all Beckett’s prose and drama. The stage becomes a canvas and the performer’s bodies become the paint and clay. The first part of the workshop will involve exercises to help students experience their body physically, both outwardly and from within, including exercises inspired by Butoh and Polish mime. The second part of the workshop will look at Beckett’s shorter plays, and will illustrate his use of the body as sculpture within the canvas of the stage. These plays will be read with the intention of creating a new perspective, one that calls attention to the importance not just of words spoken, but also of stage direction, gesture, costume, lighting, and movement. Reserve your tickets early for this master class with the director of Beckett in the City, taking place at IAC in October. No prior experience of performance is necessary for this workshop, but a familiarity with Beckett might help, whether through studying his writing, performing it, or even as an audience member of one of his works.
Award-winning Celtic harpist and scholar, Helen Lawlor, will lead a master class in Celtic harp that explores technique, history, and culture. Lawlor is a lecturer in Irish music, ethnomusicology, and music education at Dundalk Institute of Technology. Her research on harping in Ireland focuses on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, encompassing issues of transmission, gender, identity, and musical styles.
