FALL 2018
Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and Mayor Bill de Blasio: New IAC Phase One is “Ready to Go”
Mikel Murfi
PERFORMANCE | EXHIBITION | EDUCATION IRISHARTSCENTER.ORG
Capital Project Phase One “Ready To Go” Friends, On the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, we were honored to be joined by Ireland’s Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and Council Speaker Corey Johnson to celebrate a $2.5 million grant from the Irish government, completing our $60 million funding goal for the first phase of our capital project. Our new building on 11th Avenue breaks ground this fall, and the New Irish Arts Center will open in the fall of 2020. In the meantime, we are preparing the second phase of the project—the restoration of our existing building, the “historic” Irish Arts Center, and a nest egg to support our long-term programming and operations. This is such an important and exciting time to join the campaign. We have crossed the threshold of inevitability. All that remains to be determined is just how fully we will reach our potential. See pages 5-6 for more information on how to get involved. We need you!

And what great artists we have to inspire us in this work. This fall, Mikel Murfi, one of Ireland’s most celebrated and virtuosic actors, returns to Irish Arts Center with the U.S. premiere of I Hear You and Rejoice and—back by popular demand—The Man in the Woman’s Shoes (pages 9-10). Hilarious and poignant, these companion plays bring to life the sweet and colorful characters of a bustling Irish village and its two most disparate residents: bashful, solitary cobbler Pat Farnon, and the indomitable football manager and woman-about-town Kitsy Rainey. We also celebrate PoetryFest’s 10th anniversary (pages 19-20); a world premiere co-presentation with La MaMa featuring Maureen Fleming, Colm Mac Con Iomaire, and James Mahon (page 14); three new IAC Book Club selections (page 13); dynamic humanities events including a conversation with His Eminence Timothy Cardinal Dolan and National Book Awardwinner Alice McDermott (page 17), a discussion of the complex legacy of Stephen Foster (page 12), and a primer on Brexit (page 32); the return of Muldoon’s Picnic (pages 7-8); Tobin’s Run on 51 (page 23); Darrah Carr Dance (page 15); Winter Solstice Celebration (pages 25-26); and so much more. And don’t forget our 19th Annual Spirit of Ireland Gala, the party of the year, on Friday, October 19 (page 28).

A Preside
“It’s going to be wonderful... the new Center will encourage a great empathy for the world and celebrate its humanity. As President of Ireland, I am
privileged to be in the company of these artists who are here at the invitation of a generous community.” On April 25, Ireland’s President Michael D. Higgins and his wife Sabina honored us with a visit to the site of our future home and for a commemorative concert featuring Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill, Camille O’Sullivan, Declan O’Rourke, and special guests, as part of our 2018 Groundbreaking year. What an honor to be joined at this transformative moment by the President, a poet and writer, academic and statesman, human rights advocate, and promoter of inclusive citizenship and champion of creativity within Irish society.

There are many wonderful recognition opportunities available to commemorate your support. Gifts may be pledged over multiple years. Please consider a donation at any level—we invite everyone to make history with us. For more information please visit irishartscenter.org or contact Pauline Turley at 212-757-3318 x205. I Hear You and Rejoice
The Man in The Woman’s Shoes
In I Hear You and Rejoice (US premiere) and The Man in the Woman’s Shoes (back by popular demand), one of Ireland’s most beloved performers creates the characters of a bustling Irish town and its hinterland, capturing their vibrancy through snapshots of its two most disparate residents: the bashful, solitary cobbler, Pat Farnon, and the indomitable football manager, Kitsy Rainey.
“Once in a lifetime, a woman the like of Kitsy comes along and when she does, the universe has to expand to accommodate her.”
Each production stands perfectly on its own—together the two plays reveal a tender portrait of community.
“100 percent theatrical magic.”
I Hear You and Rejoice and The Man in the Woman’s Shoes are presented with support from The Georganne Aldrich Heller Foundation and Penny Jackson and Thomas Campbell Jackson.
From the football field to the chapel floor, Kitsy always has the final word. By turns moving and hilarious, her friends and neighbors celebrate the impact Kitsy has made on her community.
Just outside of town, cobbler Pat Farnon lives on his own, contentedly aging in the cottage in which he was reared. Join him as he walks the five miles into his “metropolis” populated with no-necked water diviners, sporting savants, loudmouths, and preachers.

Can We Talk About Stephen Foster? THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27 | 7:30 PM
AT IRISH ARTS CENTER
$10 general / $8 members FREE for Friend / Young Patron members and higher Described as the “father of American music,” Stephen Foster penned an oeuvre that includes “Beautiful Dreamer” and “Hard Times Come Again No More,” songs that helped weave the fabric of this country’s musical heritage. But for all his artistic impact, Foster’s legacy is complex: he also wrote for minstrel shows, which were founded on the comic enactments of racial stereotypes. In April of this year, the city of Pittsburgh removed a public statue of Stephen Foster with an African American man playing banjo at his feet. For many years, ethnomusicologist Mick Moloney has explored connections between Foster’s songwriting, traditional Irish music, and black banjo music, and together with Irish Arts Center has sought an appropriate platform to present this history. As part of this exploration, we will bring together a number of cultural practitioners impacted by Foster for a conversation about his legacy. How do we appreciate Foster’s musical influence while addressing its controversial origin? Join Mick Moloney, musician Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton, artist and curator Leni Sloan, author and historian Emily Bingham, music journalist and Stephen Foster biographer Ken Emerson, and IAC director of programming and education Rachael Gilkey for a conversation that asks where we go from here. WORLD PREMIERE
AT LA MAMA Ellen Stewart Theatre, 66 East 4th Street New York, NY 10003 Inspired by the lush symbolism of Irish poet William Butler Yeats, internationally acclaimed dance artist Maureen Fleming invents surreal movement poetry, curving into shapes of shattering beauty. Her new interdisciplinary celebration of femininity combines dance and mesmerizing visual theater in a series of “vision poems.” Fleming juxtaposes her singular movement with geometric moving sculptures and brilliant lighting by longtime collaborator Christopher Odo. Featuring live music by renowned Irish composer and violinist Colm Mac Con Iomaire (founding member of the Frames) and uilleann piper James Mahon, with pianist Bruce Brubaker performing the music of Philip Glass. Exploring the “immortal waters” of the mystical feminine, Wildflowers asks: “Is immortality an elusive paradigm or present in the here and now?” Wildflowers is supported by Culture Ireland, the agency for the promotion of Irish arts worldwide, Kaatsbaan International Dance Center, Fulbright Ireland, The Irish Arts Council, Traditional Music Commission, Irish Arts Center, La MaMa, Áras Éanna Arts Centre, Ealaín na Gaeltachta, Galway County Council, Irish World Academy, and NUI Galway.

The award-winning Irish vocalist, songwriter, and composer Christine Tobin and acclaimed jazz guitarist Phil Robson return with a fourth season of Tobin’s Run on 51, bringing together some of New York’s best Irish and international musicians to play sets and share stories about jazz music’s greatest artists and treasures.

Rebecca Hart: The Magician’s Daughter FRIDAY, DECEMBER 7 | 8 PM $18 general / $14 members AT IRISH ARTS CENTER
Singer-songwriter Rebecca Hart returns to Irish Arts Center with her unique style of rock ‘n’ roll comprised of modern alt-folk music, with Irish influence. Hart and her band will perform songs from her newest album, The Magician’s Daughter, inspired by and dedicated to the memory of her late father, playwright/director Joseph Hart—another artist whose work found a home on Irish Arts Center’s stage. This hauntingly atmospheric album charts Rebecca and her father’s relationship to each other and to Ireland. Performed in concert, we will see her storytelling brought to life in the kind of spellbinding live show that’s earned her the longtime success she’s enjoyed in New York—where she regularly sells out venues like Joe’s Pub and Rockwood Music Hall.

Christina Dolphin was born in County Dublin, Ireland. She took up the tin whistle at age 7 and went on to learn the flute a few years later. She holds a master’s degree in ethnomusicology from University College Dublin, where she lectures occasionally on Irish traditional music. Over the past decade, she has toured extensively; performing and teaching in Ireland, the UK, America, Canada, Europe, China, Southeast Asia, and New Zealand. She is a twotime All-Ireland champion, and also holds several other medals from various All-Ireland Fleadh Cheoil competitions. Christina currently lives in New York where she teaches with Irish Arts Center and performs as a designated substitute musician with the Tony award-winning Broadway musical, Come from Away. What made you become a musician? Probably my dad, haha! He loves Irish traditional music, so he brought me to tin whistle lessons when I was seven years old. He got me a flute when I was 10. And I guess it stuck! Music has always been part of my life so I can’t imagine not being a musician. What do you like most about playing music? How it connects people. You make so many great friends and meet tons of interesting people as a musician. You can travel to the other side of the world and make musical connections with people who don’t even speak the same language as you, which is really amazing. You end up having friends everywhere! What is your favorite thing about living in NYC? The energy of the city. There’s this really great buzz you feel when you’re surrounded by so many people trying to do great, interesting and creative things. There’s always something new and exciting happening, new food to try, and a wealth of opportunity, no matter what line of work you are in. I recently moved to New Paltz in the Hudson Valley. My loft is a 5-minute walk from a farm and a rail trail. It’s the total opposite of NYC, but I still come in to the city a lot for work, so now I have the best of both worlds! What is it like being backstage at Come from Away? It’s a lot of fun. It never gets old. There are always musicians, actors and production people sitting around or walking through the green room before a show chatting, laughing and getting ready. If there’s a birthday, there will be cake and singing. If there’s a new substitute on, everyone is so friendly, welcoming and encouraging. I am so grateful to Ben Power for asking me to sub for him. It’s been an amazing experience getting to be part of such a successful show! What advice do you have for new music students? To listen to as much music as you can. With Irish traditional music, there are so many tiny nuances in the way the music is expressed, which can’t really be captured in notation. The more you listen to the music, the more you’ll begin to understand it.
