Grace in Uncer Friends, What a time. Among the many lessons of this most difficult year is that our path forward isn’t always a straight line. The pandemic has forced us into an involuntary state of uncertainty that is lasting longer than any of us would wish. At Irish Arts Center, and in the arts sector more broadly, this uncertainty is tied to when we will recover a more normal public health environment. For us, the good news is that our new building is coming together beautifully—so beautifully—and we can’t wait to share it with you. We don’t yet know when it will be safe for us all to gather there, but we are planning for that day with diligence and hope, and we will be ready. We’re also learning that this moment—for all its heartbreak and anxiety—has redemptive possibility. We are challenged to find a new comfort level with uncertainty, even to see it as an opportunity. It’s a chance to lean into sadness and fears as well as longed-for joys and enduring hopes. An invitation to discover what hitherto unseen grace and strength resides within us. That’s how we are thinking about our fall season. In addition to the digital programming we’re so thrilled you have already come to love—which has reached more than 150,000 people (in 23 states and 47 countries)—this fall we are also announcing a series of new commissions from twenty-six artists across a range of artistic disciplines and styles, all prompted by the idea of finding grace in uncertainty. Working with these artists, we aim to create a kind of chronicle, or artistic scrapbook, that will allow us to look back at this time and how we thought and felt. It’s an inspiring and eclectic assembly of artists—and we’re grateful to them all for accepting our invitation to share their stories. We are exploring new and interesting ways to share these works with you—some will 2

emerge this autumn and others will incubate longer—and all of them will help us endure, engage, and perhaps even embrace this period of uncertainty. We’re also continuing our popular Live From Irish Arts Center and At Home With Irish Arts Center series, our Poems and Words of the Week, our online classes, a digital PoetryFest, a new weekly series from Mick Moloney, and a selection of “Picnic Picks,” featuring favorite moments from Muldoon’s Picnic over the years. To make all of this possible, we need your help. Our digital programming will remain free of charge, with opportunities to offer a donation in any amount during the booking process. You can also become a member or make a one-time contribution by visiting irishartscenter.org. And while we won’t be able to gather for our Gala this fall, we are developing a special and inviting alternative—Together Until We Gather: A Virtual Spirit of Ireland Gala, featuring a range of artists and special guests, and some surprises—in December. Our hope is that everyone in our community will come together in this moment and celebrate with us, and give as generously as you can. Shortly after the onset of COVID-19, we shared the following poem by Derek Mahon—one of Ireland’s most beloved writers. Its message sustains us as we lean into this autumn of uncertainty—one which will surely be followed by winter, and spring, and new life. Stay safe, stay well, and see you soon, Aidan Connolly Executive Director

rtainty EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALL RIGHT How should I not be glad to contemplate the clouds clearing beyond the dormer window and a high tide reflected on the ceiling? There will be dying, there will be dying, but there is no need to go into that. The lines flow from the hand unbidden and the hidden source is the watchful heart; the sun rises in spite of everything and the far cities are beautiful and bright. I lie here in a riot of sunlight watching the day break and the clouds flying. Everything is going to be all right. —DEREK MAHON

Recent News The New Irish Arts Center: On The Horizon For years now, we have enjoyed our architect’s rendering of the future façade of the New Irish Arts Center. We are now delighted to share this glimpse of the real thing! With just a few months left in our twoyear construction—despite the COVID shutdown—our new home is on the horizon.

Summer School This year we offered our first-ever summer term of classes, with some teaching artists Zoom-ing in from the far-flung locales in which they spent the season— including language teacher Siobhán Ní Chiobháin from her native County Kerry, and fiddle teacher and Broadway musician Caitlin Warbelow from her home state of Alaska. We thank all our teachers and students for their participation this year!

IAC Online When we pivoted to digital this spring, we couldn’t have known how robust and popular our online programming would become. We’re thrilled to know that you like it, you really like it! Of course, we are longing to see you in person again—and in our new building, no less—but until then, we’ll continue to bring you virtual engagements over email, on our website, and through our social media platforms. Thank you for tuning in and keep sending us your feedback at info@irishartscenter.org.

TA EOIN COLFER WITH LIAM BATES

Not ones to be contained by the boundaries of genre, Artemis Fowl author Eoin Colfer and Circle of Friends movie soundtrack composer Liam Bates have collaborated on a big band swing show, an uplifting Christmas musical, Dustin the Turkey’s comeback vehicle, and a disco diva’s singing stand up. On this occasion, with the help of singer Aileen Mythen, they turn their attention to Irish country music.

We are entering a new phase of grappling with all of this. We still don’t know when it will be safe or allowable to all gather together for shared experiences. We develop scenarios and contingency plans. We look out for each other.

IRISH ARTS CENTER COMMISSIONS And we challenge ourselves to lean into the moment. For this, as ever, we rely on the artists. To that end, we have commissioned twenty-six artists reflecting a range of perspectives across our artistic community, to create short works that respond to the idea of finding grace in uncertainty, finding meaning in the chaos, and perhaps also some redemption.

In his work On the Transmigration of Souls, commissioned by the New York Philharmonic just weeks after 9/11, John Adams sought to create a “memory space” for those who suffered loss of life, of loved ones, of innocence, and to evoke the feeling “that we are all united by a common bond of humanity.” The common bond of humanity unites these artists—and will carry us all through this moment.

The Story of the Magnificent Flanagan Brothers

The Famous McNultys: The First Family of Irish Music

7PM

7PM

The Flanagan Brothers were among the most brilliant and colorful Irish performers in America in the 20th century. Mick Moloney, who met Mike Flanagan in the late 1970s and helped make the brothers’ music accessible to a new generation of Irish musicians, gives a presentation on the family’s most memorable story, complete with video clips of Mike talking about their performances in New York in the 1920s, as well as many audio recordings from their huge repertoire of songs, tunes, and vaudevillestyle skits.

Annie Burke-McNulty and her children, Pete and Eileen, played, sang, and danced their way to becoming America’s most famous musical family for more than three decades. This talk, richly illustrated with pieces from the vast family archive of recordings, photographs, and other memorabilia to which Mick was given unfettered access, tells the McNulty’s extraordinary story.

An Immersion in Donegal Gaelic Song with Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh

1PM

1PM

Mairéad shares tunes and tales from County Donegal, home to one of the richest traditions of fiddle playing in Ireland and the world over. Budding fiddlers will take in tunes by ear in small phrases and learn history, context, technique, and style through practice of bowing, ornamentation, and tone. Intermediate to advanced students welcome.

Altan frontwoman and the 2017 Traditional Musician of the Year (Gradam Ceoil TG4) Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh explores the history of the sean-nós tradition and shares songs from her native Donegal Gaeltacht, Gaoth Dobhair. All are welcome— familiarity with the Irish language is not required to learn highlights from Mairéad’s repertoire.

Almost Home After a decade-long journey, we are now just weeks away from substantial completion of our landmark new Irish Arts Center on Manhattan’s West Side. Our journey has involved many twists and turns—and now a pandemic. But thanks to our extraordinary people—our artists and audiences and supporters, our board and staff, our teachers and students, our government partners, our institutional peers and supporters, and our amazing design, management, and construction team—not even that can stop us. Soon enough—when it’s safe for us all to come together—we will enjoy soft openings and grand openings and our wonderful inaugural season. In the meantime, we hope you will consider making a donation of any amount to Irish Arts Center, to help us prepare for those moments. Now, more than ever, we need to connect in deep and meaningful ways to feed our souls, and nurture our collective artistic heartbeat, across states and oceans. Thank you for being part of the journey. We are well and truly Almost Home.

IN MEMORIAM

This summer, the Irish Arts Center community lost four beloved members of our family.

Jim Cagney was an ardent supporter of IAC and all the Irish cultural organizations in our NYC community, and one of the most spirited souls we’ve had the honor to know. He and his wife Bridget are perhaps best described by Paul Keating in the Irish Voice as “Irish ambassadors at large.” Pete Hamill was a world-renowned newsman and cherished voice of Irish America. Thank you, Pete, for telling our New York stories. Josephine McNamara was an actor and IAC dance instructor who taught into her late 80s and reached thousands of IAC students in her many decades with us. She loved the Center as much as we loved her, and we know that she is watching over us, calling out her “hop-1-2-3”s from her new abode. Elsa Regan was our dedicated céili band leader and longtime member whose passion for music inspired us all. We honor Elsa, Jo Mac, Pete and Jim, and all our friends and neighbors lost in 2020.
